LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Patron of Lightning Drama, Welcome to the 2022 season of Cypress Bay’s American Musical Theatre program. We begin with Frozen, Jr., presented by the ninth grade. The story centers on the relationship between two sisters who are princesses, Elsa and Anna. Elsa has magical powers to freeze objects and people, which she does not know how to control. After inheriting the throne, Elsa flees, inadvertently causes the kingdom to become frozen in an eternal winter, and nearly kills her sister. She must sacrifice and show true love to save the day. It premiered in March 2018, and due to COVID pandemic closed in March 2020. The dates are Wednesday through Friday, February 23-25, 2022, at 7:00 pm.

Next is our production of West Side Story, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, which will be presented March 9 – March 12, 2022, Wednesday through Saturday, at 7:00 pm. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the story is set in the mid-1950’s in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, then a multiracial blue-collar neighborhood. The musical explores the rivalry between the Jets, a white gang, and the Sharks, from Puerto Rico. Tony, a former member of the Jets and best friend of the gang’s leader, Riff, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks. The dark theme, sophisticated music, extended dance scenes, and focus on social problems marked a turning point in musical theatre. The original 1957 Broadway production ran for 732 performances before going on tour.

Finally, our production of School of Rock is Wednesday – Friday, April 20 – 22, 2022, at 7:00 pm. It is a rock musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and it made its Broadway debut premiere at the Winter Garden Theatre on December 6, 2015. The story follows Dewey Finn, an out-of-work rock singer and guitarist who pretends to be a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. After identifying the musical talent in his students, Dewey forms a band of fifth graders, in an attempt to win the upcoming Battle of the Bands contest.
