News frome around th Hospice A fresh new look for the inpatient unit

A

s Matron of the inpatient unit at Cynthia Spencer I’d like to say a huge thank you to our supporters and give you all a little update into some of the improvements you have helped us to make for our patients and their families.

We have been undertaking a significant redecoration project throughout the inpatient unit over the past year.

With support from many local businesses including Nationwide, Travis Perkins and dbfb giving up their time to paint the wards, bedrooms and bays we have been able to give the entire unit a fresh new look which has made a huge difference. Many beautiful, calming murals have gone up throughout the Hospice too including in our patient lounge, chapel, therapy room and Wellbeing Centre and we give many thanks to Source Graphics for their support with this project.

Through your generosity we have also been able to renew much of the furniture and soft furnishings throughout the unit, helping us give family members and visitors an even more welcoming setting while they visit their loved ones.

Many patients describe our woodland walk as ‘a breath of fresh air’ and when families come to visit with small children, being able to see them run around and be ‘normal’ in this outdoor space has put a smile on lots of patient’s faces. However, the path was in desperate need of improvement in order to make it more accessible for people in wheelchairs or with mobility difficulties.

Working with local arboriculture company, Wilby Tree and with your support, the work has now been carried out and as you’ll see from the photos the improvement has been dramatic and with the bluebells soon to bloom we are expecting the woodland walk to be even more popular with patients, their families, staff and volunteers!

Your support has also enabled us to introduce the world of virtual reality to our patients. Through the use of a VR headset, patients can see the world from the comfort of their chair or bed and with a 360 degree view, for many patients who have not been able to get out for a long time it’s almost the same as being there. We look forward to being able to Sarah Knaggs bring you further updates Matron, Inpatient Unit on this new initiative soon.

osting a Big Quiz night in aid of Cynthia Spencer couldn’t be easier as we give you everything you need from questions and answers to posters and certificates. You can hold your quiz anywhere! In a pub, social club or workplace – it is sure to bring people together and you’ll have a great time whilst making a difference for your local Hospice.

Family prepares to

he Cynthia Spencer Hospice Colour Run is back for 2019 and hundreds of fun-runners are again expected to take part, get messy and raise money for the Hospice. The event takes place on Saturday 11th May at Overstone Park, which has been the home of the 5k cross-country course for the past three years.

One family who will be returning once again to take part in the event is that of Claire Moulds-Roberts.

Claire and her daughter Adelaide decided to take part in last year’s Colour Run while looking for a charity fun run to do together as a distraction to Claire’s Mum Diane’s admission to hospital. Claire said: “The Colour Run popped up and we just loved the sound of it. We had the best time ever and from start to finish we laughed mainly because of how unfit I am! We went straight to the hospital afterwards to tell

Mum and show her the pictures. Later that day I got told the news that nothing more could be done for Mum and in June she was admitted to Cynthia Spencer Hospice. She went back in about four times throughout 2018 and was finally admitted again in December. She then passed away in January this year.

“My squad are all involved in this year’s Colour Run, there will be loads of us and we have already raised over £1,000 with a bank matching what we’ve raised. I’ve joined the choir, I play the Hospice lottery, I’m doing a skydive and an abseil. All these things I’m doing, that my friends and family are backing me on 100%, is because of how much I think of the Hospice. I already feel like I’ve won the lottery because you gave me the greatest gift of all, the time with my Mum, the goodbyes, the memories and most of all, the love”.

Our s r e t r o p Sup Tracy and Lynn held a fair at the Obelisk Centre and raised £1,540.

East Haddon Golf Society raised £704 through fines, donations and their Beat the Captain competition.

Old Northamptonians Rugby Club raised £442 from their annual Boxing Day rugby match in memory of Len Locke.

The family and friends of Joanne Griffith organised a ball in her memory raising almost £40,000 for the Hospice and the Second Hope Charity.

Skears Photographic ran a competition for local photographers then produced a calendar to raise funds for the Hospice.

Our inaugural Hospice Golf Day, won by DR Roofing raised over £8,500.

Albion Sales & Lettings held a retro 80s Ball, raising over £8,000.

Our Corporate Dodgeball nights in the autumn attracted 42 teams from 28 different companies and raised almost £2,000.

Maisie (aged 8) and Poppy (aged 6) cycled 50 miles in January 2019 in memory of their Granny and raised £285.

Staff & customers from the Old Five Bells have raised over £2,500 so far with the recording of their Country Roads charity single.

Teams from Online Direct held a Halloween Dress Down day and had a volunteer day painting the Hospice.

Charlotte Lapsa-Brown took on the Santa Skydive in memory of her ‘Daddy’ Martyn and raised £2,520.

Liz Denston took on the 25km London Winter Walk and raised £500.

Staff at Greencore held afternoon tea, a quiz and Christmas lunch parties for patients in our Wellbeing Centre.

O

ur Franklins £50 Challenge 2019 has now finished, and what a great 2 months it has been! Starting on 24 January, teams had 8 weeks to use their investment of £50 from Franklins Solicitors to fundraise for the Hospice.

This year we had 13 motivated teams take part with the aim to raise £30,000 for Cynthia Spencer.

Teams taking part included; Albion Sales and Lettings, dbfb, DFA Law, GPW Consulting, Greencore, Kilby Fox, Nationwide, Onefoursix, The Pension House, Tollemache Arms, Travis Perkins, The White Horse Tilbrook and The Red Lion Yardley Hastings. dbfb kickstarted the Challenge by selling ‘leaves’ to brighten up the tree outside the Hospice reception. Costing £500 a leaf, local businesses could pay to pledge their support of the Hospice, which proved to be very popular!

DFA Law used a football scratch card and hamper to start their challenge, culminating in a race night while Kilby Fox sold raffle tickets to win a free tax return next year.

One of Nationwide’s most quirky ideas was to fill 300 red envelopes with fortune cookies for Chinese New Year and sell them to employees. Some envelopes had £5 and £10 notes in or a token for a prize.

The Pension House, Travis Perkins and The White Horse all held a quiz night to raise funds for the Challenge.

Care at the End of Life training Student nurses celebrate new skills to help patients have ‘a good death’

A

group of registered nurses working within hospitals or throughout the community in Northamptonshire have graduated recently from ‘Care Towards the End of Life’, a course run by the Practice Development Team at Cynthia Spencer Hospice.

The course covered the identification of patients coming towards the end of their life, the principles of Advance Care Planning, symptom management, Kat – “Before the training I felt that my communication skills were not good enough, particularly when going in to see a patient and their families and having to deliver bad news. The communication skills element of our course has really boosted my confidence in talking about difficult subjects. My patients then feel comforted by the fact that I speak with confidence and hopefully that reduces their anxiety and builds trust between us. I also feel more able to care for my patients holistically because I’m fully aware of other services that might help them and can make sure they are put in place. It’s this training that has equipped me with the confidence and knowledge to do this.”

Part of their learning was also focussed on the communication skills vital when talking to patients and their families about end of life care. Three nurses, Kat, Becky and Carlie, who collaborated together on a project during their studies, found these particular skills extremely useful in their roles as community nurses.

Becky – “A key learning for me is the skills to recognise the dying patient for example the agitation that a patient can show when they are reaching that stage. I don’t think I was really able to recognise this before but now I can I am able to implement the services the patient needs sooner rather than later. This helps the patient quickly reach a more comfortable stage and this in turn impacts the family in a very positive way as they feel confident that their loved one is receiving all the services they need. The training also taught us that sometimes families who are facing bereavement, or who have been bereaved, just need someone to listen to them. Previously I would have felt the need to talk but I’ve now learned that sometimes someone to listen to them is all they need and want.”

Carlie – “The important thing for me is that ultimately there’s a patient and a family that need our support. In our roles we can go in to some difficult situations at times and now we have the skills and the knowledge to be confident to help where we can but also the confidence to know how to implement additional support and services when they are required. The training has helped us be able to facilitate a good death. If we can help a patient achieve this with all their wishes and preferences in place and everything has gone the way they and their family wanted then we can be happy we’ve done the best we possibly could.”

ellbeing at Cynthia Spencer is a service which aims to try and help people to live their life as fully as possible, maintain their physical function and maintain independence for as long as possible. Our service is available to anyone over the age of 18 currently facing a life limiting illness, this can include advanced cancer and neurological conditions such as Motor Neurone Disease and Parkinson’s.

Programmes we offer

Wellbeing at Cynthia Spencer runs specific symptom management programmes focusing on symptoms that are commonly reported by people with a variety of life limiting conditions. The sessions focus on education and self-management techniques that could help you to reduce the impact of these symptoms on your day to day life. Each week there will be an education section, an exercise section and a relaxation section. Wellbeing at Cynthia Spencer is open 5 days a week between 10am and 4pm.

“I just think the atmosphere and the way everybody treats you is marvellous.

It’s been so helpful. You’re not expected to take everything in, it’s what suits you and helps you and there’s no pressure on you. Coming here has been such a benefit to me. Initially I came to attend the breathlessness course and they’ve given me techniques to help me with that. When I came for the fatigue management I didn’t think that would be very helpful as I thought ‘how can you manage that?’ but in actual fact it was really helpful. They’re not at all scary, they’re absolutely lovely. They’re so patient with us. It’s super.” – Janet

s e g n e l l a h C Our fundraising manager, John Helm, is following in the cycle tracks of our amazing Doctor Reema Pal who took on our London to Paris Cycle challenge last year and raised a whopping £6,378. Together with cycling buddies Steve and Craig who are joining him on his quest, John hopes the ride will raise £10,000 in total for the Hospice. John said: “I have organised Cycle4Cynthia for the last nine years and I see the camaraderie engendered by the cyclists.
