Alumni Event in Boston!

Over 100 Alumni came to The Wintergarden at the Boston Seaport on May 4th for a fun filled evening of appetizers, cocktails, music, old friends, and lots of schmoozing.

We had representation of alumni from the 1960’s 2000’s with a few notable groups: D’79 with 6 alum; D’92 with 7 alum; D’80 with 8 alum; & D’02 with 12 alum!

Our music was provided by David Blaustein (D’77)’s jazz band, Melodious Funk.

Daled ’93, 20 Year Reunion Friday, August 2nd, we started what we hope to be a new tradition at CYJ celebrating the 20 year reunion of a Daled Group.

Daled 1993 came up to camp on a beautiful Friday afternoon while camp was in

session, and participated in a tour of camp; Line-Up with the campers; Services in the Grove; Shabbat Dinner followed by a ruach filled Song Session; and finished the night off with Israeli Dancing. Lots of nostalgia!

Sunday afternoon, April 28th, 40 alumni and some of their family members attended a

D’93 women experiencing Services in the Grove on a beautiful Shabbat evening

luncheon on the Rooftop Deck of Yankee Stadium along with a Yankees Game. Daled 2000 and Daled 2002 came out strong in numbers but we were still represented by many generations. We even had Ina Botvin Rosenthal (1949-1953). She wrote to me afterwards: “It was so good to be with other YJ’ers, no matter what their ages or years at camp. I never

What is it? A movement dedicated to encouraging and inspiring kindness wherever & whenever possible.

How did you get the idea? The idea came to me in 2011 while thinking about the risks to teens associated with Facebook and other social media platforms and the ever prevalent news stories about bullying.

Why now? An unexpected tragedy, The Boston Marathon bombings, compelled me to finally move forward.

I learned about the girls living in tents on the far side of current boys area; campers taking hebrew classes in the morning; and how CYJ friendships are timeless!

RE: Josh Zeid via Andy Murachver '96. I'm really excited to tell you that former CYJ camper Josh Zeid has been called up to the Majors to pitch for the Houston Astros. Yes you read that correctly, there is a major leaguer among the ranks of YJ alumni!

Josh was a camper and star of the "junior junior" softball team in the summer of 1998. He went on to pitch for Tulane in college and has spent the last several seasons with minor league afWiliates of the Phillies and Astros, but now he gets his chance at the big show. Jason Paul D’93 got engaged to Gail Tabak Brooke Ellison D’95 got engaged in December to Jesse Berman. He went to Greylock in the Berkshires for overnight camp. They live in Sharon, MA and are having an immediate family wedding on Sunday, December 1st.

Hannah Wurtzel D’98 and Jon Arkin D’97 got engaged in NYC in February. They thank CYJ for allowing them to meet!

Jen Gorden D’03 (above in white tank top) got married to Scott Marchione on July 28th in Westborough Massachusetts. Four of her seven bridesmaids were her CYJ friends: Jennifer Kracoff, Danielle Marissa Loria D’99 got engaged to Anthony Tellier, Hayley Levine and Julie Tabroff.

Julie Kahan Simone I Love reading everyone's updates and seeing how everyone is doing! The summers spent at YJ were the best summers growing up. I am married with 2 boys - Zachary is 11 and in 6th grade (yes he is in Jr. High) and Tyler is 10 and in 4th. My boys are 14months apart, but not planned that way - should have been 16 months, but my younger one couldn't wait to meet the family. I am living in Hampton, NH. We spend our summers following my oldest around to baseball games (his team has done fantastic) and going to the beach. Haven't sent my kids to camp. They love spending their summer at home and going to the beach.

Alumni News Justin Hoffman Congratulations to everyone on their families. I've never been married and absolutely love what I do for a living. I play records for the sweet, god fearing, mitzvah loving people of Las Vegas. I work for some of the hotels and get to travel the world. I’m incredibly lucky and grateful. I am in love with a muslim girl and couldn’t be happier. Love and miss everyone and so happy that you were all a part of one of the best if not the best time of my life.

Laurie Aaronson I am married, have 2 kids (I started on them on the later end of the spectrum....daughter Talia is 4 and son Rex is 2) and live in San Francisco. Have a restaurant consulting company and also own a few restaurants here in SF. I think its early to dream about summer camp for my kiddos but when I got my s*** together enough to take them to temple yesterday (First time ever), several tunes really took me back. Best summers of my life. Would be fun to reconnect so please let me know if you find yourself in SF! Hedy Schwartz Dion I currently live in Framingham with my 10 year old daughter Nicole. My daughter really wants to go to YJ, so we're thinking about it for next year.

Jodie Markell Titus I am married living in Marblehead, MA. I have two children - a Daughter Rachel who is 19 who went to YJ and is currently a Junior in college (did I really just say that, I am old) I also have a 13 year old son Zach in 8th grade, and to my disappointment no YJ for him. I just found our Gadna yearbook in the attic last week.

Resa Tolin Sherr I am living inWestborough Mass with my husband and 2 daughters (Rachel who is 13 and Rebecca who is 10). Both girls go to YJ and absolutely love it! I was a special education teacher for many years, but have enjoyed being home with my girls for the last few years. I am very involved with the parent groups in town as well as the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Todd Brenner D’86 is the Daled 1986 Alumni Ambassador. He is married to Lauren (she never went to CYJ), and has a 10 year old son Jared. And Jared just had a great time at CYJ this past summer in Bunk 4. Todd works at EMD Millipore in Billerica, MA. And he enjoys coaching Jared’s Little League baseball team.

Daniel C Jaffee M.D. and his wife have four children. His girls are eight, seven, and twin boys that are 3 1/2. This summer they moved from Providence Rhode Island where they have been for the past nine years to Scottsdale, Arizona. Dan is a urologist.

Elisa Finer Levenbaum moved to Scottsdale AZ in 2004. She is married to a great guy Michael and they have 2 kids, Ethan is 7 ½ and Alexandra is 6. They also have 2 Great Danes names Clifford and T Bone. Elisa has been working in corporate sales for the past 18 years and has enjoyed it for the most part.

She is now spending more time with her children and has been venturing on a new career and her own business as a dog trainer.

Eric Drotch wrote to us from Jerusalem, where he has spent the past 4 months on a Fulbright grant, looking into art education in Israel. After college and working in the nonprofit world for a bunch of years, Eric went back to school and got an MFA in painting.

Eric teaches at a school in central NJ. He got married in 2009. His wife - a poet and teacher - and Eric have two young boys who are now 2 years old and 8 months old.

Alumni News Eric has two nieces and a nephew going to CYJ this summer, and he’s looking forward to the day when he can drop off his own kids in Amherst.

Tamara Kessler now lives in Southeast Virginia, Hampton Roads area. Tamara works in nursing education as the Director of Nursing Development and Recruitment for ECPI University, which has 12 campuses across 3 states: NC, SC, and Virginia. Tamara is married to a great man (Ryan) who helps keep it all together with a busy work and home life. Tamara has 3 kids, Carlee (21), Brandon (18), and Morgan (8). Carlee and Brandon both went to YJ as campers for a few years, and Carlee also went back as a counselor, making them the 3rd generation of Kesslers at YJ.

Alumni News Michael Katz has a partner Bill and a Bernese Mountain Dog, Isabel. He’s living in Boston's South End and works in Cambridge for a software company doing digital marketing. Michael loves traveling. He’s also been a Jewish Big Brother for the past 11 years and it's strange now that his "little" brother just graduated from high school.

Ilana Marcus Drimmer lives in DC with her husband and 2 kids, working at NBC news for "Meet the Press." She has a boy who is almost 8 and a girl, almost 6. Ilana has been in tv news for her entire career-and is now working part time.

Jennifer (Epstein) Callahan is married to Kevin and they have a 9 year old, Emma, 6.5 year old, Sara and 5 year old, Ryan. They moved to Houston 4 years ago from NYC for her husband’s job. Jen has been a stay at home mom for the past 6 years. Before that, she traded Asian equities on the institutional side. She they have lived in sunny FL for They’ll be married 16 years has not updated her website in 14 yrs. She does not miss the this summer and they have a few years...but feel free to cold at all! Joy is married to a two boys, Michael (12) and check it out, it's a work in non Jew, so he does not "get" Andrew (10). They moved to progress. the whole YJ thing, but at Holliston, MA 4 years ago and www.karenlynnephotography. some point she would love to live in a great family com She is currently single, get her daughter there. Her neighborhood that feels a lot still searching and without son plays baseball all summer like camp, which probably has children. She has been to so so for him it is out. She works something to do with living on many fabulous countries and for a telecommunications the same street as her brother has done so many great things, company and has been in that Craig Cohen D’88 and his wife but “it would be nice to finally industry since getting out of Rachel (their kids are at YJ for college. It's stressful but she settle down soon.” the first time this summer) as really enjoy it. We Remember the fun times...

Barbara Platt D’66 (after receiving an e-mail this summer from the Alumni Association, writes me the following e-mail)

The timing of this email is so ironic! I was in my car with my husband yesterday, on a long drive and Ira Glass, from This American Life, was doing a radio show on NPR about camp people v non-camp people and how non-camp people will NEVER get the kind of experience camp people have. There do not seem to be words, in our vernacular, that can actually replicate the true nature of the experience. The understatement of this century and the last.

Exciting? (Ha! During Macabiah, I would venture to say, I experienced more of a pure adrenalin rush then with any other experience in my life with the POSSIBLE exception of childbirth. Note, I said POSSIBLE!)

Emotional? (Ha! Waiting for Barbie Bass' bus to arrive the first day of camp, from Long Island, and suddenly hearing somebody in Hadar Ohel yell - with the first sighting - IT'S HERE! - well, my wedding was pretty emotional but....in the same category as Barbie Bass' bus? I'm not goin' there.)

Life-changing? (Ha! Some counselor who had gone to the same camp for 12 years was asked how camp was life-changing - in what way he a different person then he would have been had he not gone to camp. Now this was a very well-educated, articulate man, who had no trouble answering previous questions with great expression and enthusiasm. But, try as he might, words utterly failed him. He stammered. He stuttered. He cleared his throat. And finally, he said, with as much feeling as he could muster: I dunno. It just did.)

At the end of the program, at a girl's camp somewhere, they just let the recording instrument run and record a ceremony that took place during this camps' color wars . It was some ceremony letting the girls know who was selected team captains.

I was driving our car at the time and my husband was in the passenger seat. Every time he opened up his mouth to say a word.....I screamed SHHHHHHH!!! During the ceremony at this camp, you could hear the voices of the head counselors making the announcements but then all you heard was HYSTERICAL CRYING. Happy crying from the girls who were selected. Miserable, gut-wrenching, suicidal crying from the girls who weren't. This sobbing must have gone on for - fully - five, six, seven minutes of air time, and I kept thinking...anybody who is a NON-camper must have turned their dial a LONG time ago. For them, it would have been absolutely revoltingly obnoxious.

For me? I was delirious. Screaming with laughter, tears rolling down my cheeks. Pointing, hysterically, at the radio. Holding my sides. It was probably not a good idea that I was behind the steering wheel. That hysterical, out-of-control, blindingly painful, happy, miserable, overthe-top crying, brought back the best memories of my life.

Jeffrey Worob D’84

Just a quick note to say thank you for organizing the event last night (Boston Alumni Event at the WinterGarden). There were some really nice touches (cake, M&Ms, etc), the space was beautiful, food delicious and I was Daled '91. I recall our most of all it was so, so good to slogan was 'we are awesome, see everyone after so many we are fun, Daled Daled 91!'. All years. Reconnected with one of the girls got t-­‐shirts with the good friend of the past in slogan at one of the kiosks in the particular after 20 years which old Natick Mall before we went is pretty amazing…. It was much to camp that summer. My good appreciated by all. friend, Jamie Koplan, told me Lara King Friedman D’92 about the reunion. We are still friends after all these years!

Deborah Goodman D’91

It was a really fun night (Daled ’93 Alumni Shabbat) and a great way to build up alumni spirit. I think that holding during the the Friday night activities was a fantastic idea as we were able to sample all the things we remembered -­‐ services, dinner, songs, dancing, etc. The tour of camp was really fun too because even though it is mostly the same, it certainly looks different from an adult perspective. Thanks for organizing this fun event and I hope it continues for future Daleds to enjoy!

Laura Glazer Gebhardt D’93

Richard Shakter D’79 (bottom left #22 in pic) went to Jerusalem this summer to participate in the Maccabiah 2013 games! He was selected to play MidWield for the USA Masters 45+ soccer team. Richard had not been to Israel since his Gadna trip in 1980. He writes, “touring Israel with my teammates brought back memories (distant at this point) of being in Israel with my camp friends 33 years prior. As we did back in 1980, my teammates and I did a sunrise climb of Masada. It was wonderful to have the memories of CYJ and add this new memory of climbing with my teammates in our team uniforms and carrying the Maccabiah 2013 Wlag.” Richard lives in Acton, MA and has a Winancial consulting Wirm in Wellesley.
