A Tribute to Geoff Napier.

Things change and develop but still they stay the same.

I am writing my notes for this article while at the wonderful Tree of Life Festival in Birmingham. So many kind and friendly people and such a welcoming atmosphere! I am also here with Geoff. Technically he has taken a back seat from Cygnus, but here he is as ever reaching out to people and spreading the word to everyone passing the stand. We are so different: I like to sit in the background, while he expends all his energy communicating, always with his characteristic good humour.

He is no longer part of the dayto-day running of Cygnus (please check out his letter later on), but from my point of view nothing has really changed. I will still seek his advice and he will still point authors and books our way. He will review books for us and I hope still spread the word, wherever he is and whatever he is doing. Actually I KNOW he will do that because he can’t help it. He really cares with every cell of his being about making this world a better place.

Personally I don’t think anything is ever lost from Cygnus. We all only add to it and add our own unique energy.

Ann passed away a few years ago but her example still guides everything I do. Every new person who is involved in this project will take us in new directions, and we will follow as long as what we find causes no harm and increases a sense of positivity.

You can see those principles in action at events like this. People reaching out to each other, regardless of what they look like or how they might identify themselves; sharing advice together that will make this road a little easier to walk; and coming into every encounter with an uncompromising self-honesty and an energy for self-inquiry. Many of us might be in pain, but we hold a hand out to them and offer whatever we can in support. And if we have an awareness of a higher power, we seek to put that first in everything we do, to the best of our abilities.

And on top of everything, it’s all about the members. That’s not a platitude: you won’t believe how much inspiration we derive from what you say, and from your example, with all the recommendations you make, events you tell us about, the materials

you send us, and just generally your kind and generous words.

Sandy Newbigging made this point in a talk he gave at the weekend and you can read more in his book Calm Cure. We can see out there a rise in hatred, deliberate misunderstanding, misleading information and unkindness. On the other hand, we also witness the proliferation in spiritual events, holistic therapies, healthy lifestyles and MBS publishing.

There are more high profile spiritual teachers, and mindfulness therapies are dominating healthcare. There are lots of us and there are more every day. Turn your attention towards that, towards the good, towards the ducklings swimming in the canal, the blossom on the trees, the warm sun on your back and the meal in front of you. Read books that lift your heart, walk away when someone starts mouthing the latest conspiracy and switch off the news or your Twitter feed. If you feed your soul in a healthy manner, you will make yourself an agent for positive change in the world.

So even though Geoff is moving away slightly, he is still involved and we still want to thank him now for all he has done. He has made an huge difference and we are truly grateful.

editation comes from a cosmic word that means medication. Like all premium medications that you can buy at any respectable drum circle on the beach, the medication of meditation should make you more meditative. With the proper dose, you should be like a horse on tranquilizers — extremely meditative. In fact, according to forthcoming scholarly research, that’s why the word meditative is derived from the word sedative.

When you’re properly meditative, you’ll also enjoy the results of having your presence-crushing enthusiasm, ambition, and interesting personality traits heavily sedated. In this way, you will find it much easier to conserve energy, be meditatively present, come across as calm and gentle, and not inconvenience yourself with things you don’t want to do... ...Why do you need meditation and its meditative effects in your life? Because you’re not living your life simply to live life — you’re living your life to live the spiritual life.

Meditation is the most spiritual thing to do since the Dalai Lama discovered Buddha. Made fashionable by the shaved heads of sexy monks posing for photographers in serene temples all over the world, lotusing their postures in the most meditatively enticing way possible, meditation has become synonymous with spiritual evolvement.

And for those monks who nailed their photo shoots while simultaneously crushing a meditation session, I’m personally grateful... ...What if I told you there’s a way that you could turn anything into a meditation? Would you believe me if I told you that right now I’m doing a question-asking meditation?

Because I am. And now I’ve switched into a statement-writing meditation.

How can you achieve such high-level Everything I Do Is a Meditation spirituality? I’m glad you’re doing the question-asking meditation now.

Let me respond with a responsegiving meditation. There’s an ancient technique called labeling. Unlike my

grandfather’s colorful labels regarding ethnicity and gender, labeling can be a healing art. Here’s how it’s done: take a look at whatever you’re doing.

Once you’ve identified that, simply place the word meditation after it.

Right now you’re reading, which means you’re practising reading meditation. This methodology gives you all the benefits of meditation with none of the meditation. You don’t have time for actual meditation when

you’re engaged in television-watching meditation, for example.

This afternoon I’ve done nothing but meditate in various forms. I began with a walk my dog meditation. Then a clean my dog’s vomit off the floor meditation. Then came a wish my dog hadn’t eaten all that grass meditation.

Next I found inner peace with a heated conflict with my girlfriend meditation.

I followed that with a my girlfriend is wrong meditation. I then engaged in Facebook scrolling meditation. From there I did a drive to yoga meditation, quickly followed with an I’m not going to yoga because I’m still mad at my girlfriend meditation. Then I did an eat a gallon of soy ice cream so I don’t feel my anger meditation. Then there was a go home and give my girlfriend the cold shoulder so she knows who’s in control meditation. Finally, there was a nap meditation.

Finding the meditative flow in any activity isn’t easy. It involves two steps: first, remember to add the word meditation after whatever you’re doing; second, don’t forget to remember that you’ve added the word meditation to whatever you’ve done. And, of course, the third of the two steps: make sure there are others around with functioning ears so that they can hear all about it. ❖ Adapted from How to Be Ultra

HOW TO HARMONISE THE SHADOW WITH THE LIGHT

T’S CALLED HEALING, JAY, NOT FEEL BETTERING. – That’s what my teacher told me, with what seemed to be zero concern for how I was feeling.

I was in the middle of another healing course as part of my training, and it was bringing the most uncomfortable, challenging feelings to the surface. Have you ever felt such intense emotion, that you can feel it in your physical body? It’s an unusual sensation. Raw, unprocessed emotion that hits you like a sledgehammer.

We’ve all been there, at least once in our lives.

You see, there are two types of healing. The first type covers the things you do that feel comforting.

That doesn’t require any real resilience.

The second type is the juicy stuff I’m discussing now. This kind of healing experience is not fluffy. You are not gently caressed by the hand of an angel, and there are rarely unicorns.

It does however change you on a deep, profound level, and seeks to reveal the core of why you’re having a problem, not just give you short-term relief from it.

It could look like depression, losing your job, a feeling that nothing makes sense anymore, anxiety, a rocky marriage, or admitting you’re gay at 45. It could be a child on drugs, or sudden loss of a friendship.

It looks like trouble, yet deep healing is calling your soul to a higher ground.

The problem? We hate change, and transformation of the soul is often a destructive business. When you start your healing journey, it’s a brave step into the unknown. You may think you know what that journey will look like, but your soul has a divine will that can override your personality and call you towards spiritual evolution, and it usually doesn’t care so much that you’re comfortable where you are. Instead, it wants growth and expansion and divine glory.

I love a pink light meditation, but I think it’s important to talk about the challenges on the spiritual path. I come across so many people in my healing work who feel they are the only one

having such intense challenges; what a relief it is to know you are not alone!

When things seem to be falling apart, it feels hard to describe it to anyone who hasn’t experienced it. It’s easy then to become isolated, but you don’t have to be.

As you evolve and heal, to get to higher ground, you have to be a different version of yourself. Your healing journey will twist you like a wet rag to squeeze out of you all that needs to go to get you there.

You see, the reason you feel so lost in the gut of the valley, is the old you has started to fall away - your identity of who you think you are - but the new you hasn’t fully emerged yet.

So there’s this gap. Then, as a new version of you emerges, you become more aligned with your soul. As you heal and evolve, your ego loosens its grip, and that means that the things in your life that were driven by fear, ego, societal pressure and conditioning start to fall away to put you back in touch with your true core desires and divine expression. The intense pressure is often the only way we truly surrender to a higher power, and we are often

softened by our suffering.

Here are some tips on navigating the gut of the valley: ❖ Ask yourself each day, what do I need to feel better, just for today. Don’t base this on the future or the past, just stay true to the present moment. ❖ Reach out for help. Find friends who are open and understanding. You may have to connect with new, likeminded people via spiritual and meditation groups who understand what you are going through. Find a healer, mentor or guide that your trust. SYNCHRONICITY AND TRANSFORMATIVE CHANGE

E

arly in my clinical psychology career, strikingly meaningful coincidences played a key role in helping me to appreciate a spiritual dimension in life. I’d graduated from university as a committed sceptic about the existence of any phenomenon that seemed vaguely mystical. Ironically, the term “psychology” could be literally interpreted to relate to the study of the soul. Psychologists are generally taught to ignore, or at least de-emphasise, anything that cannot be rationally or empirically explained.

From my personal and clinical experience, synchronicity can play a powerful role in helping people progress through stages of transformative change. There are four well-recognised stages. In the first, one’s equilibrium is unsettled by an event that tips the balance – usual ways of responding are challenged.

The second stage is often associated with a period of difficulty and stuckness, referred to in literature as “the dark night of the soul”. The third stage involves a breakthrough, often in the form of an epiphany. The fourth stage is characterised by consolidating changes in perspective and behaviour, based on a newfound understanding.

People typically experienced little synchronicity in stage two.

Synchronicity is often felt to be affirming of one’s life direction. I commonly refer to it as a “tick from the universe” that you’re on the right track. I certainly experienced little synchronicity whilst going

through months of a severe depressive episode 25 years ago for which I was hospitalised. But something auspicious arose from it. Only in retrospect, I realised that I’d been admitted at 6 PM on 6 June, the exact time and date of my engagement six years earlier.

Many of my early experiences of synchronicity had uncannily featured the number six. I had since come to interpret the synchronistic appearance of repeated sixes to signify something fortuitous, and that things were unfolding as they were “meant to be”. I then became convinced

something worthwhile could come from the depressive experience. It did.

It ultimately proved to be one of my richest learning experiences informing my work.

Many clients have reported striking synchronistic events that help them shift from stage two to stage three.

The following story was perhaps the most dramatic. A man in his early 30s, Eric, was kneeling in front of a window, about to pull the trigger of a pistol in his mouth. Suddenly he noticed a black bird staring at him from twenty metres away. It took off and flew straight at him, smashing into the window before falling down dead. Eric had an epiphany. He believed that the bird had sacrificed itself for him. He concluded that he was meant to live. He then booked himself into a rehabilitation unit and withdrew himself from all illicit drugs and alcohol.

Eric later got married, had a child, thrived at work and remained abstinent in the years since. He only told me about this incident after he learned I was writing a book on synchronicity. Despite him previously associating meaningful coincidences with his “higher power”, he mentioned none of this to me earlier lest I consider him to be “borderline psychotic” owing to his unconventional perspective.

Especially since learning of my interest in synchronicity, many of my clients report having frequent experiences of uncanny coincidences, especially during periods of positive change.

Many clients describe fortuitous coincidences as reaffirming the direction they are taking in life. They find it numinous and uplifting, something that we now understand to promote neuroplasticity, positive gene expression, favourable brain chemistry and the subjective experience of wellbeing. WHAT IF EVERYTHING WE THOUGHT WE KNEW ABOUT REALITY IS ABOUT TO BE TRANSFORMED?

A

21st century scientific revolution is underway whose revelations will radically affect not only our view of the Universe at its smallest and largest scales but every level in between.

This is crucial for our everyday lives.

Its rapidly growing scientifically based evidence across many fields of research, from physics to biology and social studies, is reconciling with spiritual experiences and the numerous reports of supernormal phenomena such as telepathy and remote viewing.

It will transform our notions of physical reality. Instead of the apparent duality of the manifest world, this emergent vision is disclosing a deeper understanding of reality as being innately unified. We are both creation and microcosmic co-creators of our Universe, existing and evolving as a finite and coherent entity within the infinity of the Cosmos.

Physicists know when drilling down to sub-atomic scales that matter is extremely ephemeral; its will of the wisp nature showing our Universe is 99.999999999999% nothingness.

They also know that, whilst within space and time no signal can go faster than the speed of light, quantum mechanics can only work if the whole Universe is interconnected as a single entity. As I mentioned, I had the pleasure of attending the talk that SAVE Sandy gave in April at the Tree of Life Festival. It was based on 50% this, his brand new book. My first impression of this deck is that it is half way between a Tarot and oracle deck. There are 78 cards, and the suits are divided in to Earth, Air, Fire and Water. T

he time has come for me and Cygnus to go our different ways. My sincere hope is that Cygnus will to continue to transmit something of the light that Ann was able to for 23 years.

However, I will be allowing the universe to transmit through me in a different way. The open gatherings held in the Cotswold Healing Retreat for the past 12 years have created a template that I wish to spread far and wide. During the past two years, I have demonstrated that amongst the Cygnus readership and beyond there is a hunger for honest and deep sharing between individuals and in groups without agendas. I hope the gatherings I will be involved in and the Cygnus cafés will continue to grow, and I hope to support as many of them as I can, in a personal capacity.

What are Cygnus Cafés for?

The intention behind the Cygnus Café meetings is to provide safe spaces for Cygnus members and their friends to have regular heart-to-heart gatherings. There is no agenda or structure, rather we trust the universal flow of life to teach us what we need to learn on the day. We all come together with the shared intention of allowing the highest good to manifest.

So what actually happens? We introduce ourselves around the circle and often before we’ve finished, the sharing begins. We are here to listen to each other with our hearts, and in turn allow our hearts to respond to each others’ needs.

These meetings can become spaces where we are safe to find our authentic selves instead of projecting a persona that we judge others will find OK. Each group finds its own organic path of development. Above all, we keep it simple and real.

Broad bean pod fritters with Sriracha mayonnaise Don’t be suspicious of these furry husks. These fritters make a delicious, moreish snack – perfect with a cold beer on a sunny day.

SERVES 4 ❖ 200g/7oz/scant 12/3 cups gram flour or plain/ all-purpose flour, sifted ❖ 1 tsp fine sea salt ❖ 1 tsp ground cumin ❖ ½ tsp cayenne pepper ❖ a good grinding of black pepper ❖ about 25 empty broad/fava bean pods and outer skins from 500g/1lb 2oz whole beans ❖ sunflower, vegetable or rapeseed/canola oil, for frying ❖ 1 tsp sea salt flakes ❖ 1–2 tbsp sriracha (or to taste) ❖ 75g/2½oz/1/3 cup Classic Mayonnaise

❖ Put the flour into a bowl and stir

in the salt, cumin, cayenne and black pepper, then gradually whisk in 250ml/9fl oz/generous 1 cup water, or enough water to make a batter the thickness of double/heavy cream. ❖ Discard any woody or stringy bits from the pods, usually found at the ends and along the joins of the pods.

Cut the pods in half lengthways along the join, then cut them at an angle into roughly 5cm/1¾in lengths. ❖ Pour enough oil into a heavy-based
