CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Thank you to all who attended Presentation Night recently. Our entertainment, booked months before, was a bit of a secret and a definite treat for those who had been following “The Voice” on television. Accomplished Adelaide singer Sarah Lloyd fronted her burlesque show and I think it’s safe to say that all eyes were front when the girls were strutting their stuff! Many agreed that Sarah’s amazing voice incredible voice deserved to take her further on “The Voice” but nevertheless we were happy that she was available to perform on our night. Thank you to Mario, Bridgit, Aaron and staff for the great service and delicious meals. If you haven’t eaten in Mariner’s Restaurant since Aaron took the helm, I do suggest you taste some of the great dishes on his Winter Menu.

Sun 17: Winter R3 (Plympton Cup) Sat 23: Short-handed R4

Congratulations to Les De Wit on winning Crew Person of the Year and Two True as Yacht of the Year. Thank you again to our wonderful Volunteer Duty Crews from CYC1 and CYC2 and of course our Racing Association Sponsors Phil Hoffman Travel, Yalumba, Penfolds, MUSTO, Port River Marine, Canegrass Saltbush Lamb, Doyles Sailmakers and The Stag.

I hope that most of you have responded to our Skipper Survey, we are about to sit down to plan our next season and we look forward to tabling your replies. It would be foolish to presume we can accommodate all requests but by collating numbers and giving all suggestions due consideration we hope to arrive at a program which offers something for everyone. As always, fleet numbers and available volunteer resources will also determine what we can and cannot offer in the coming program. On the topic of Volunteers, please contact Jess if you have any spare time or know of anyone who may be interested to help out our dedicated volunteer crew. Many people may think that volunteering is a week by week commitment but that’s not the case. Our aim at this point is to identify and train a pool of people from amongst our members who will be able assist and support our existing crews. I also encourage you all to consider nominating for REX this year (more on that at a later date).

As an adjunct to our Short Handed Series, a destination race has been planned to Port Vincent on the weekend of the 7th – 8th July. We will offer a Sat 4: Short-handed R7 & Series separate start for “stand alone” race for any compliant yachts who wish to participate, please contact Jess for details. Presentation Sun 5:

NEWS FROM THE RACE OFFICE

Presentation Night 2012: The Racing Association has put on yet another successful Presentation Night, with 182 guests in attendance. Everyone enjoyed a night full of prizes, good food and of course, our fabulous Burlesque entertainment! Thank you to all who attended the evening and continue to support the CYCSA Racing Association - it’s a great way to end the season! Winter Series: The Combined RSAYS & CYCSA Winter Series / CYCSA Port River Marine Winter Series kicked off on Sunday the 20 May with a combined fleet of 27 on the water for Race 1. Short-handed Series: The Short-handed Short Course Series ran its first race on Saturday 12 May and had decent fleet of 7 boats nominate in total. A good course was set and everyone came back to land to enjoy a Canegrass Saltbush Lamb BBQ and a couple of jugs of beer courtesy of the Patten Family and Doyles Sailmakers. Handicap Committee: The Racing Executive is putting a shout out forward for anyone interested in joining the Racing Association's Handicap team. If you are interested in getting involved with this Committee, please contact Rob Sellick (Handicap Committee Chair). Racing Executive: The Racing Association's AGM will be held on Friday 27 July 2012. As always the Racing Executive for the coming season is elected at the AGM. If you have something to say or are interested in joining this committee, please contact me. Don’t forget, without our Racing Executive, we would not have any racing at the Club - this is an invaluable committee who works hard to provide you with your racing calendar and ‘Racing Excellence’.... Don’t be put off, we also have some fun! Sponsorship: As the summer series draws to a close, the Racing Executive starts the process of renegotiating contracts with our existing (and amazing) sponsors, and we also start the process of trying to obtain new sponsorship - which can be a hard task. Are you interested in sponsoring the Racing Association? We have many options and packages to suit lots of different requirements. Please contact me if you can be of assistance. Till next month, happy sailing!

OFFSHORE DOCUMENTATION ATTENTION OFFSHORE SKIPPERS! This past season, the standard of the documentation submitted for Offshore Races has been substandard.

TIME LIMITS There are time limits outlined in the Sailing Instructions which MUST be adhered to. Please refer to SI 19.1: Each boat shall submit a completed “Offshore Race Crew List” at the Nomination Desk listing crew details and radio(s) to be used at least two hours prior to the warning signal. Please note—this list must be legible and a typed list is preferred. These time limits are put in place by the Volunteer Coast Guard, who monitor your races. Please show them respect by getting your documentation in on time .

DOCUMENTATION: CREW LISTS These forms must be LEGIBLE. It is unacceptable to submit a form covered in crossing out and scribble. If something were to happen on water, I need to be able to refer to these lists in an efficient manner. Please type these lists and email to me the day before if possible.

EMERGENCY CONTACTS MUST be given, no exceptions. Please abide to these guidelines - they are in place for the safety of you and your crew.

Thank you - Jess DOWNWIND • CRUISING YACHT CLUB OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA RACING EXECUTIVE WWW.CYCSA.COM.AU

SHORT-HANDED RESULTS RACE 1 SATURDAY 12 MAY 2012 1: STOCKCAR - Dave Hughes 2: TAKE 5 - Steve Martin 3: CARIOCA - Beth Hutton

PORT VINCENT DESTINATION RACE! JOIN OUR SHORT-HANDED FLEET FOR A STANDALONE RACE TO PORT VINCENT IN JULY. MORE DETAILS ON PAGE 16!

SAIL NUMBERS Sailing Instruction 10: SAIL NUMBERS / ALTERATION TO BOATS 10.1: Mainsails, headsails and spinnakers shall carry the same sail numbers in accordance with rule 77. This Sailing Instruction is the warning and opportunity to correct in accordance with rule G4. 10.2: A boat shall notify the Race Office when a sail number does not match the registered sail number on the entry form. Failure to do so may result in being scored DNC.

The Racing Executive is giving notice to all skippers who have advised the Race Office of a change of sail number to their boat this season. We expect all boats to start the 2012/13 season with the correct sail numbers. This has been mentioned previously in ’DOWNWIND’ and email correspondence from the Race Office. It becomes confusing for our volunteers on the Committee Boats when recording finish times, as well as for the Race Office when processing results when this rule is not abided by. We thank you for your cooperation! DOWNWIND • CRUISING YACHT CLUB OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA RACING EXECUTIVE WWW.CYCSA.COM.AU

IRC REPORT

On Sunday 13 – Tuesday 15 May, I attended an extremely well run IRC measurers seminar based at the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club at Pittwater. The main items on the agenda were: 1.

Updates on the IRC Rule changes for 2012

2.

Matt Allen (CYCA) gave an interesting talk on the functions of the ‘Offshore Keelboat Policy Committee’ – they are having a meeting for all interested skippers the day prior to the Sydney – Gold Coast Race (27th July) at the CYCA to try and get some of the following items settled: a)

Proposed changes to special regulations (Safety) for the next blue book

b)

Racing rules – validity of yachts moving weight to windward on long legs etc

c)

Rating rules – IRC / ORCI?

d)

National rating championships – viability?

3.

A lot of time spent measuring 5 yachts – the original SMB, 2 x Beneteau 40.7, Hanse 400 and an XP44 Sport

4.

Also spent a lot of time measuring sails.

State IRC Champs Only SA has a season-long series covering all types of racing (which the others thought was a great idea). NSW had a 7 race W/L series held at Port Stephens at the end of the summer season. QLD, Tas, Vic and WA do not have a state champs at all.

By now, all current IRC certificate holders would have received the 2012 book and revalidation form. Prior to renewing, I suggest you consider having your sails remeasured (maybe shrunk), and anything else you may be thinking of changing – maybe you should have the boat weighed. If you put in your changes with the renewal there is no extra charge from YA. After a record number in the State Champs last season (Div 1: 13 & Div 2: 7) let’s hope we can lift the numbers even higher.

PRESENTATION NIGHT

Presentation Night for Season 2011-2012 was held at the CYCSA’s Horizon Function Room on Friday the 4th May 2012. The evening saw a great turnout of 182 Racing Members and their guests who came to celebrate the end of another stellar Racing Season. Keeping with the tradition of recent years, the entertainment for the evening didn’t disappoint and the stunning burlesque dancers had many of the red blooded blokes in the audience a bit hot under the collar! An added bonus was the celebrity of Sarah Lloyd, an Adelaide girl who recently appeared on the television program ‘The Voice’ – and she sure had a set of lungs on her!

Our valued major sponsors from Phil Hoffmann Travel, Port River Marine, Yalumba, Penfolds were all in attendance and, alongside special guests William Strangways, Dick Fidock, and Matthew Buchanan (on behalf of Malcolm Kinnaird), assisted with the presentations to the lucky winners.

As always, the Racing Association welcomes feedback and suggestions from those who attended to ensure that next year is and even bigger success! A big thank you to all boats who competed in the various series of Season 2011-2012, and we look forward to a great, action packed program next year.

CREW PERSON OF THE YEAR

LES DE WIT

Les was recognised for his dedicated and continuous commitment to the ‘True North / Two True’ team. With a “turn-up” rate of around 95% for all nominated races, Andrew Saies described Les as being “one of the few crew who has not had to attend his ‘grandmother’s funeral, wife’s birthday or best friend’s wedding’ on a Saturday afternoon”. Andrew also paid tribute to Les’ unfailing dedication to Two True for more than seven years and acknowledged his undeniable passion for the sport of sailing. Les competed in the last five Sydney to Hobart races and was among the winning crew of 2009 and while his primary role on the boat is as a headsail and spinnaker trimmer, he has also chosen to take on the responsibility for setting up and maintenance of all IT functions aboard ‘Two True’. For his long service, value as a team member and unfailing support to his boat and fellow crew members, REX congratulates Les De Wit on his award as 2011/2012 Crew Member Of The Year
