Well another Lincoln complete, and from all accounts it was a typical race with all the good and bad stories which make great conversation at the Marina Tavern or Yacht Club on Sunday. Congratulations to all who made the journey and especially those who posted a podium position this year. As we begin our windup to the Summer season, we are seeking feedback on this years’ program. Shortly, all Racing Association skippers will receive an email with specific questions and room for comment. I strongly urge all skippers in the coming weeks to talk with their crew and feedback their suggestions/comments so that REX can take the wishes of as many people as possible into account when planning for next year. We have received comments during the year about the Offshore Series and decisions may need to be made to change some elements of this series, again your comments in writing will ensure that your voice is heard and considered. When you receive this Feedback form, please complete it and send back to Jess as soon as you can. Unless we receive comments from all boats it is impossible for REX to make democratic decisions while planning for next season. On the topic of feedback, I attended a YSA meeting the other night where the ‘Gemba Report’ was tabled and explained by Ross Kilborn from Yachting Australia. The Gemba Report was funded by the Australian Sports Commission and directly relates to YA’s Sports Development Plan (available for perusal on Yachting Australia website under ‘member resources’). Essentially, the Gemba Report is a quantitative research study on the sport of Yachting in Australia. It would be exhaustive to list all the interesting points which came from the study but a few points which REX will consider in its future planning are some of these key insights: • Yachting rates 37th out of 46 sports when related to the word

‘Passion’. It also rates 34th out of 46 sports in participation numbers. • Yachting has an ‘exclusive’ image and is perceived as being an

‘inaccessible’ sport.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT (con’t)

FROM PAGE 1

Barriers include: •

The lack of a ‘go-to’ site for anyone who is curious about the sport. People who do learn to sail often contact commercial sailing companies rather than Yacht Clubs to find out information.

Perceived cost of yachting as a sport

Clubs not welcoming (closed gates and websites with no call to action re: learn to sail visible)

New participants are more interested in relaxation and social activity than competition

There is a strong need to provide shorter forms of sailing activity to stimulate interest

People are wary of long term annual membership commitments

Lack of communication from Yacht Clubs as to how people can participate in sailing .

Some of these points will come as no surprise to some (so perhaps much of the Gemba Report is an affirmation rather than a revelation), however it does provide clarification for clubs who are serious about looking to the future. Priorities identified by Yachting Australia include the obvious need to increase participation in the sports via a grass roots development plan, and a new program (Tackers - aimed at 7-11 year olds) will be rolled out to interested clubs around the country. YA has also committed funds toward a national marketing plan for our sport, more on that as details are released. At the CYCSA we are fortunate that we have the Marine Academy and excellent on-water assets which could be utilised in future to address some of the points identified in the report. I expect that local sailing clubs with a focus on junior development will look into possibly adopting the Tackers program, but REX and the CYCSA needs to consider how we can service our competitive racing fleet and also perhaps provide a conduit which can introduce people to keelboat racing in a fun and social way. Sometimes we have to step away from the sport we love and view it as the general public do. The report leaves no doubt that people are far more attracted to sailing if they participate in fun and social activities in the first instance. Learning HOW to sail comes later. There will be room for the comments on this topic in the feedback form.
