Chairman’s Report…….

Following our recent AGM and ballot, I wish to formally welcome Roger Nicolson and Peter Hall to our Racing Executive. I also thank Mal Hutton for nominating and Peter Hendy for his time, energy and enthusiasm this past year. He’s certainly not off the hook as we have asked him to represent the J24 Fleet ex-officio. Roger and Peter join myself, William Strangways (vice chair) Nicole Burtt and Brenton Pegler to form the Racing Association Executive for this coming year and we thank all members who took the time to attend the meeting and cast their vote.

On the topic of AGM’s, I recently attended our Club AGM. A far-from–dull affair which was well attended by a good cross-section of members, this meeting also comprised an information session about our Club’s upgrade plans and developments in the future. The Racing Executive congratulates Andrew Saies on his appointment as President and we also thank outgoing President John Gerard, on a job well done during his tenure.

Congratulations to Andrew Corletto and his crew on Shining Sea for an excellent first place result in Division 1 of the Winter Series. Winter Racing conditions are notoriously unpredictable and thankfully we were able to conduct enough races to complete the series this year. That wonderful little trailer-sailer Oh Really! took on the bigger boats in Division two and achieved a well-deserved first place, so a hearty “well done” to Mike O’Reilly. Congratulations also to Trevor Conyers and the crew aboard No Eye Deer for achieving first place in the J24 fleet. Well done to Julian Newton’s Game Over for a First Place result in the Combined Winter Series.

It was wonderful to see 50+ nominations for the Port Line Cup on August 8. Well done to the crew of Bullistic for first place in Division One, ahead of RSAYS 3 Cool Cats (2nd) and G-Wizz (3rd).

With our Port River Marine Winter Series behind us we now focus our attention on the coming Summer Series program.

Our season officially begins on October 2 and as we look toward Open Day I hope that our racing members will gather their friends and family for what promises to be a very enjoyable day. I recently joined Flag Officers and other CYCSA Association representatives for a productive Open Day planning meeting. Details are still being finalised but I’m confident that (weather permitting!) our Club members and friends will be able to watch, enjoy and even participate in some unique activities during the day. If the weather gods do happen to smile upon us on Open Day, be warned, each boat may be called upon to nominate representatives who are willing to get wet (so that’s a heads-up to perhaps pack some bathers and a towel along with those drinks and nibbles!) but more on that later when details have been finalised.

CHART 345 SUPERSEDED – NEW CHARTS ISSUED We have been advised that chart #345, a fundamental navigational aid for South Australian boats, will soon be superseded. We urge all skippers and navigators to contact The Map Shop in Adelaide or alternative sources to obtain a copy of the updated charts (AUS 780 ad AUS 781) as soon as possible. We believe that the updated chart may show navigational hazards which are not represented on the older charts and therefore should be carried by all CYCSA racing yachts. The RAN Hydrographic Office also advises that a new chart for the Althorpe Island sector, AUS 126, has also been issued.

RACING MANAGER’S REPORT

DOWNWIND Hello Racing Members!

Well, we’ve come to the end of another season, with both the Short-handed Short Course and the Winter Series finishing up in recent weeks. You can find race reports and results in this edition of Downwind.

Since last month’s newsletter, we have held the Racing Association AGM (30th July). The minutes from this meeting and the annual Racing Association Financial Report are included over the page. The new REX was elected at the AGM, and I would like to congratulate the reinstated members Traci Ayris, William Strangways, Nicole Burtt and Brenton Pegler, and welcome our newest members, Roger Nicolson and Peter Hall. I look forward to a productive year with you all.

In the most recent REX Meeting, the following motion was passed: MOTION: For the Twilight Series 1, the racing division will follow the set course for that night, and will continue to be open to all boats. This decision will be reviewed at the end of series one based on participation.

We are still keeping our eyes and ears peeled for more Sponsors, so if you know anyone who might be interested in helping out, please let me know.

Finally, I’d like to thank the group of past and present Racing Members (led by Jim Hallion and Linda Hart from Alliance, and including Mark Williams, Mario Minuzzo and Hayden Jones) who have kindly donated 2 trophies for the Winter Series in memory of Hans Neumann, who sailed with a number of CYCSA boats and sadly passed away at the end of the Winter Series two years ago. Thanks to the generosity of this group we now have the ‘Hans Neumann Perpetual Winter Series Trophy’ for the winner of the CYCSA Port River Marine Winter Series (Div 1); and the ‘Hans Neumann Memorial Cup’ for the series winner (all divisions) of the Combined CYCSA / RSAYS Winter Series. It was lovely for Sonja Neumann to attend the presentation of the Winter Series and present the awards to the inaugural winners.

I hope you all take advantage of the next month to rest up before the start of the Summer Series, and I look forward to seeing you all at the Skippers and Crews Briefing on Wednesday the 6th October.

PROCESS OF HANDICAP REVIEW

All handicaps will be available at the REX office on request.

Any adjustments and reasons made by the Handicap Committee will be available at the REX office on request.

New Vessels A starting PHS and Division Allocation will be made on submission of the vessel’s details.

As per Boat registration form.

This Starting PHS will be reviewed to confirm that the first PHS is appropriate to allow the Top Yacht Handicapping Program (TYHP) to make automatic adjustment within its mathematical constraints; if this PHS fails to be adjusted by TYHP the Handicap committee will make a manual adjustment until the TYHP makes the automatic adjustments.

Existing Vessels At the Start of a new series (Year) all PHS will be reviewed based on the performance during the past similar series. If the fleet changes due to addition or loss of a significant vessel or vessels then a new baseline may need to be set, this review will occur prior to the start of the new series and the new PHS and reasons for the change will be available at the REX office on request.

If an existing vessel continues to perform outside the mathematical constraints of the TYHP then the Handicap committee will make a manual adjustment, the PHS and the reasons for change will be available at the REX office on request.

Conditions for all Vessels A: PHS may change if the vessel is modified, any modifications needs to be provided in writing to the REX office.

(48 hours prior to racing). If such modifications are deemed to be significant then any previous results will be discarded and the vessel will be assessed as a new vessel.

B: Notification of change of Helmsperson from that on the Nomination form for a Series or Regatta Failure to comply with A or B will result in HC adjustment.

The Handicapping committee will review all results during the following week, if on review the committee finds that the PHS falls outside of the mathematical constraints of the TYHP then the committee may make a manual adjustment. If such adjustment occurs then the value and the reasons will be available at the REX office on request.

The Chairperson or the nominated person from the committee shall confirm all manual adjustments and a brief reason for the adjustment.

Rob Sellick– Handicap Chairman SHORT-HANDED SHORT COURSE RACE 4—RACE REPORT Another light winter’s day for race 4 of the Short-handed series (raced on the 24th July 2010) – 8 starters with wind around 4/5 knots. The RO set the course from just north of Beacon 10 to Northern Silt (P) to Number 2 (P) to Wreck Buoy (P) to Finish South of Beacon 15. The Wind remained light so the RO decided to Shorten Course at No2. This enabled all yachts to complete the course.

SHORT-HANDED SHORT COURSE RESAIL The re-sail of the postponed Short-handed short race was scheduled for the 31st July 2010, but had to be abandoned. It was called off the Friday before due to the “BOM” site forecast of W/N/W 25/30 knots for Saturday afternoon.

SHORT-HANDED SHORT COURSE RACE 5 (FINAL RACE) Perfect weather for the last race of the series (raced on 7th August 2010) – with an interesting course start South of the Channel heading approx North to Northern Silt (P) then a run to the Wreck Buoy (S), hard on to Ent Beacon (S) and a broad reach to finish.

All competitors thought the course was great, even though they crossed the Channel twice (which is not a problem if there are no shipping movements).

The course was approx 18nm, and it was an excellent afternoon’s sailing with yachts on the water for about 3.5 hours.

It was an excellent mixture of place getters – a J24; 34’Cruiser/Racer; 50 Footer; and a 38’ Cruiser/Racer.

Following the final race was the customary BBQ with Canegrass Saltbush Lamb supplied by the Patten Family, and the presentations were made to a very happy group of 2 handed competitors.

These BBQs always have a great atmosphere and it was fantastic to see the friendship within this group of sailors after each race of the series.

RESULTS Race 5 Fastest: G-Wizz (Greg Patten) 1st Poppy (Michael Phillips) 2nd Synergy (Mal Hutton) 3rd Carioca (Helen Wilmer) This was the 5th and last completed race in the series.

THE PORT LINE CUP - SUNDAY 8TH AUGUST 2010

This year there were 54 entries and 52 starters (10 Div 1 / 10 Div 2 / 9 Div 3 / 8 J24 / 15 Trailables) in the Port Line Cup. The weather forecast at 1100hrs was 13knots N/W – 7knots W/S/W at 1530.

Strong Incoming tide of approx 1metre during the race. Course – number 1 (2 laps) There was a small delay on the first start which went through the various divisions with Div 1 not starting until 1150. The wind at the start was generally 10/13knots northerly, which meant the first leg to corner was hard on the wind followed by a reach to the turning marks, reach and run back to southern turning marks – same again for the next lap.

Shortly after the start, “Touch and Go” and “Shining Sea” went hard aground and needed assistance to get off. Halfway up the first beat “The Business” also grounded. I believe a number of other yachts also spent time on the mud.

The breeze began to lighten on the first run and was down to 6/7knots for the second beat but was still in the north with no tendency to go to the west as predicted. On the second run to the finish the wind was just east of north and down to 3/4knots.

The strong incoming tide was a great help to get yachts over the line, gradually the breeze died to glassy conditions and many yachts unfortunately had to retire. Only 28 yachts finished the course – very disappointing for the competitors and the Port Adelaide Sailing Club who put in a huge effort to organise and run this major winter event.

Interesting stats – there is a lot of crew work involved in this classic river race - a GPS yacht tracker on “3 Cool Cats” revealed 53 tacks and 18 gybes.

The presentation for the Port Line cup was held on Friday 13th August in the PASC clubrooms. A change of format this year was the dress code – suits for men and cocktail dresses for the ladies, plus a buffet style roast dinner and dessert (a lot different to the casual clothes and sausage sizzle usually provided). Although the PASC members all seemed to be aware of this change, the message didn’t get out to the other clubs so about 25% of the attendees came casual. PORT RIVER MARINE & COMBINED WINTER SERIES - RACE 5

Raced on Sunday 15th August 2010. Forecast: W/S/W 20-25 knots 1200-1500hrs At 1000hrs, the decision was made to abandon the J24s and to delay the Div 1 & 2 start for one hour due to winds gusting up to 28-30 knots at the Black Pole. By 1130, the breeze began to moderate, so the new start time of 1300hrs was ok.

Course: Start – just South of Channel to Wreck Buoy (P) – Pin End Start Mark (P) – No 9 (P) - Wreck Buoy (P) – To Finish.

At 1300 the wind was down to 14-15 knots, with a bearing of 240 degrees, and 1.5m waves (some sloppy seas remained from the strong winds earlier in the morning).

Most yachts were conservative and went with full main and No3 as the dark sky on the horizon threatened stronger winds.

A good start for both divisions – hard on wind to wreck buoy – the wind was down to 13 knots and soft during this leg, then spinnaker run to pin end mark – very square as the breeze had moved to 250/260 degrees. However, most yachts only required 1 gybe. The next leg was hard on to No9 – just after rounding No9 the wind moved to 225-230 degrees, which made this leg to the wreck buoy hard on again. The wind speed was 11-13 knots just after rounding the wreck buoy for the last spinnaker run with stbd pole and bear away set - breeze picked up to 15-17 knots and moved back to 250 degrees – 1 gybe was enough on this leg. There was a bit of excitement as the breeze increased to 20 knots approaching the finishing line with most Div 1 yachts picking up waves and reaching speeds in excess of 10 knots.
