A MESSAGE FROM OUR CYA PRESIDENT In scriptures, Jesus explained to his disciples the importance of loving one another through this statement:

"By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

“I was welcomed!” Christ’s Youth in Action has been doing evangelization since 1980. Things have developed rapidly since then. From a time when staffers would call students using the landline to a time when we can use Facebook, Instagram, Twitter to connect with students, we have not stopped bringing people to encounter Jesus in their lives. And yet, you still get this response from students, when you asked them why they kept coming to CYA events, “I came back because I felt welcomed.”

Jesus exhorted His disciples to love one another, through which people will be able to immediately spot those who are followers of Christ. "Love for one another” was a clear seal or mark of the Christian.

We have always made it a priority in CYA to make everyone feel welcome. It flows from the commitment to be truly brothers and sisters to one another. We have also extended this same love to anyone who is new. Up to now those who are new in CYA find themselves welcomed.

God has not stopped calling us in CYA to proclaim the good news to young people.

The youth of today long to be loved and respected. The best way for us in CYA to proclaim the good news is by the way we love and welcome one another and those whom the Lord will send our way.

We will continue to have retreats, Christian Life Series, sports events, informal parties but all these events will not help bring people to the Lord if we do not love those God will send our way.

If we then ask people today what they like the most in CYA, I do hope and pray, they will still say: “I was welcomed in CYA!”

PREPARING TO GO FURTHER OUT!

I truly believe that CYA is entering into a new phase in which God is preparing us and calling us to go Further Out! “Short-sighted are you and little [is] your vision if your only concern is to raise leaders for your own; if your only concern is to raise disciples for your own city. Do you not know that I am a God who will accomplish greater things - even greater things in this generation than it ever was in the past? Do you not know that I can send out harvest for you? Do you not know that I desire to do more and bring more people to My kingdom? And the Lord needs us to move tents. The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few, so ask the Master of the harvest to send out laborers for His harvest.”

This was a key prophetic sense from one of our CYA leaders during the June 2019 National Leaders’ Training. We believe that this is a confirmation of God’s call for CYA to go further out: to widen our vision, to think about expansion in and outside of the Philippines, and to make a greater impact in the church.

The Lord is sending more laborers for the harvest.

Beacons of Hope

The year 2019 was declared by Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) as “The Year of the Youth”.

Especially in this year, the Filipino youth are encouraged to open their hearts to the Lord and be on mission. We are grateful to see that the Lord is making this a reality even just in CYA. He has been calling gifted young men and women to join our ranks and make an impact in the lives of our young people in the church.

One of our staffers, Jamela Dabuet, was chosen as one of the two representatives of the Philippines in the recent International Youth Forum in Rome. Since then, she has spoken on several occasions to bishops, priests and other church leaders concerning today's youth. God is calling more young people to serve full time in the mission in order “to man the necessary post on the battlefield.”

As we go further out, we envision CYA welcoming more youth and expanding its reach.

We are already doing this now in places such as Ormoc, Lucena, Malaysia, and Singapore. We are also helping CYA graduates live out the Kay Kristo Buong Buhay Habambuhay (KKBBH) as they transition from being students to young professionals by setting up CYA After 6.

We are excited to build CYA groups in strategic places and to obey the Lord’s call to go where He wants us to go and to do what He wants us to do.

We also recognize the need to set up for growth.

We are stabilizing how we do things so that we are able to help more people encounter the Lord in their lives. This year, we are establishing and strengthening CYA as a movement to enable us to provide effective support and train more leaders as we carry on our mission on a greater scale.

We want to go all out in evangelizing and training.

As we conclude the Year of the Youth, we envision more young people to be of service to the Church and to make a stand for the Lord in our society. We hope that our preparation for our 40th Anniversary in November 2020 will also remind us of how the Lord has been moving us to go further out... Kay Kristo Buong Buhay Habambuhay!

KNOWING GOD

The Crossroads Retreat is one of CYA’s annual efforts to bring young people to an initial personal commitment to Christ and help them make the right choices that would shape their lives.

My relationship with God wasn’t out of the ordinary. I was just another college student trying to pass all my subjects and balance everything in my life. I only saw God as a higher being, but religion wasn’t really was a big part of my daily life. I would go to church with my family every Sunday but I have a tendency of zoning out, and think of other things at Mass. I deeply felt though, that something was missing. But after joining CYA, something changed

I saw the importance of having God in my life.

I began to be more patient, prayed more often, and listened at Mass to thank God for all the things He gave me. I became happier. I also began to be more curious about God and how I can be closer to Him. Ghale Reyes is a 2nd year nursing student from the Ateneo De Davao University. She attended the Davao Crossroads Retreat.

Then I attended the Crossroads Retreat.

During the prayer ministry, when everyone was singing, worshipping and being prayed over, I experienced something

different. I experienced the presence of God through the peace that I was feeling.

I felt happy and content. I couldn’t fully express in words what was running through my mind at that time.

I only realized then that I wanted to seek God, to be even closer to Him, and to know Him further.

This desire changed the way I saw my life.

After the Crossroads Retreat, I wanted to have more of God in my life. I wanted God to guide me and help me make the right choices. I also experienced God calling me to go out and get to know Him more through CYA. He showed me that CYA is more than just an organization, but a family that will help me become better through Him. I find that journeying together with CYA to know God is more enjoyable to me than the pleasures of this world. As I seek God, it gave me comfort and peace in knowing that I am not alone.

Townhall Meeting, the first ever CYA After 6 event.

Admittedly, practicing our faith is easier when we are in college. Once we start working, however, it’s common to get lost in the daily grind and end up waiting for the clock to hit 5 PM. Sometimes, life after college can get overwhelming, uncertain, and stressful.

Just last June, however, what was initially just a simple discussion among graduating CYAers about the needs of students after graduating college ended up being the starting point of CYA After 6 (CA6) –

If anything, the success of CYA After 6’s initiatives is but an affirmation and assurance that the Lord is at work.

a new group that aims to support the youth as they transition into their mission fields after college and begin stepping into adulthood.

CA6 wants to give much-needed support for fresh and recent graduates by providing avenues to openly share about their experiences or struggles at work, and also talk about their faith. There are events ranging from quiz night fellowships to prayer meetings and town halls, as well as dinner meet-ups called Cluster Huddles. Every event is planned with the intention not just to build each other up, but to discover how everyone can find God where they are and strive to live more like Him. One such person who has actively attended CA6’s events is Theresa Endaya, a Batch 2019 graduate. When asked about what CA6 can offer for her and her peers, she says, “It’s a way for people to reconnect or rekindle their relationship with the Lord, especially in a new chapter in their lives.”

Bea Morales, one of the leaders of CYA After 6, remembers what it was like starting the new initiative. They had to begin from the ground up, so they needed great amounts of patience and faith as they laid the foundations for CA6. Despite all these challenges, Bea recalls, “This is not our initiative – it is the Lord’s work, and it is but a privilege to be used by Him and to see miracles unfold before our eyes in the context of CA6.”

Truly, in just four months, CA6 has already brought together people from different backgrounds and contexts.

Former CYA members, fresh graduates, and other young professionals have been attending the events. Slowly but surely, people are coming together in community as they continuously pursue the Lord in their lives.

“As a young professional, I’m grateful I see Him in this context – by listening to stories of people living out their faith in the workplace, fighting for time with the Lord despite their busy schedules, dealing with difficult bosses and colleagues, and in many other ways...” Bea shares.

If anything, the success of CYA After 6’s initiatives is but an affirmation and assurance that the Lord is at work, that He provides for the needs of His children, and that He will always be with us. With the help CYA After 6, truly, Kay Kristo Buong Buhay Habambuhay is something that can still be lived out as we transition from being college students to being young professionals.

Further out On mission

"A year set apart for a life set apart."

The Kairos GAP Mission Team is made up of young men and women ages 18-26 from around the world who have decided to give a year to serve God and His people, and to grow as His disciples in different countries where Kairos is present.

MOTOR CITY MISSION Detroit was never the first option for me.

While I was in college, I always thought that the logical next step for me was to work. But the Lord had other plans.

While discerning about what I was to do after college, I had 3 options in front of me: (1) to work in the corporate world; (2) to do staff work for CYA; and (3) to conduct a mission year in Detroit. I knew that wherever I was to go after college, I still needed a venue to mature, and at the same time, have God’s presence in my life. I knew that all of my options could

give me those, so it was really down to what the Lord wanted from me. During my prayer time, the Lord told me 2 things:

(1) “Do the illogical and difficult for Me.” I never intended to join something religious during my stay in UP. All I wanted was to finish college with high grades then work. It didn't make sense for me to join an organization, much less a religious one. Nevertheless, I made that "illogical" and "difficult" decision and the Lord blessed me for that. anymore, but because I wanted to respond to the Lord’s faithfulness in his promises to me when I was still in the university.

EL BRECHISTA FILIPINO “THE FILIPINO GAPPER” Just before graduating, there were many things my heart desired: to become rich, to learn skills outside a school setting, to travel, and to find my purpose in life.

However, deep down in my core, I knew I wanted to be on mission. I sought to give more of myself to the Lord, not only because school was not in the way

As I was discerning it, the Lord led me to 2 Corinthians 12:1-10. Paul here was talking about having a thorn in his side.

Yet he also boasted about it because he saw the Lord’s grace made up for that weakness. Therefore, when the choice of doing a mission year in Latin America, specifically Costa Rica, was presented, it made sense for me to do so. I barely spoke any Spanish (never took a class). I don’t play (or even like) football, which is a major sport in this part of the world. I’ll be living far away from home, and no one else from the CYA in the Philippines has gone here before. The Lord called me to glorify Him more by doing something that will allow me to rely on His grace more than my personal skills, talents, and strengths.

(2) “Give back to Me." All my life the Lord has blessed me with a loving family, good education, caring friends, and so much more. And with all that generosity and love the Lord has shown me, it seemed like the appropriate response is to give back a year of my youth to Him. I'm here in Detroit not just because not only is this the most illogical and difficult decision but also it's the one where I know I'll give back the most. I don't regret that decision one bit.

INTERNATIONAL YOUTH FORUM

“I am your recompense,” the Lord spoke to me in a time of prayer, “and you shall delight only in Me.” At the time, I had just received the invitation from my CYA director, Peter Legaspi, to apply to become a delegate to the International Youth Forum (IYF) in Rome. The forum aimed to discuss the dissemination of the apostolic letter Christus Vivit and the fruits of the 2018 Synod of Bishops at the diocesan level.

Having to write six exposition papers and submit legal requirements I did not yet have—in a span of several days—I was beginning to lose hope that I would make it in time. In my head, I should probably let it go since this was never part of the plan anyway.

Or at least it wasn’t part of mine.

Come June, I found myself in the Eternal City as one of the two Filipino delegates to the forum. Still in awe, I kept asking the Lord, “What do you want me to do, Lord? Why did you bring me here?”

In my two years as a missionary for Christ’s Youth in Action, I never did imagine I would ever step out of the country on mission.

Looking back, I knew I was ready to let the opportunity go especially after the

Lord told me He was to be my only recompense. But I guess the Lord rewards us in our surrender.

After all, what reason is there to be troubled when I know the path he has prepared leads only to him?

The forum went by like a breeze.

We shared our experiences of being on mission, listened to the victories and challenges of the Catholic church in every country, and even met other Filipinos representing different countries.

Expanded vision for evangelization in the Philippines

Each day was marked with encounter: of one another as brothers and sisters on mission, and of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. I realize now that it was not so much the forum itself that the Lord used in order to speak to me, but the men and women he allowed me to encounter and see His face in. At the beginning of the forum I asked the Lord what he wanted me to do. But at the end of it I realized he didn’t bring me there because he wanted me to do something, but because he wanted to give me something.

A greater desire for holiness

It did not end there. Today the Lord, through my experience of the IYF, continues to open doors for me to encounter his young people and those who minister to them. Since then I have found myself in places I knew only the Lord could have brought me to, allowing me to share with others the Lord’s work in my life and in the young people in CYA. Little by little, He is also allowing me to see different Catholic youth ministries in the country, different settings, different walks of life, different charisms—but in all of which, He is proclaimed and loved and served. Slowly, He is teaching me to dream for the Catholic Church—and to dream big at that. He is not only my recompense, but that of all people He has come to call to Himself.

The forum ended with a special audience with the Pope. Wide-eyed and filled with hope from our encounters in the forum, we held on to his words: “You are the today of God…who urges you to arise and follow the paths he has prepared for you.”

I knew then that it was the Lord reminding me that He is my sole recompense, inviting me to be “like Mary… always ready, but not anxious or troubled.”

BEACONS OF HOPE

The Malaysian delegates of the Beacons of Hope, Kairos Camp 2019.

CYA Penang in Malaysia is supported by the Covenanted for Christ Community (CFCC) which is part of the Sword of the Spirit. CYA Penang was founded in 2016, during a youth camp entitled Kairos Malaysia Camp: Beacons of Light, and most of its pioneering members are the youth of CFCC. CYA Penang also accommodates teenagers and young professionals and also receives support from CYA Manila.

The Holy Spirit is moving in Malaysia!

Although CYA Penang is not big in number, it is growing gradually through the people who get connected to their events (e.g. sports day, action groups, prayer meetings, Kairos Camp, etc.) The Core Group of CYA Penang is creating more opportunities for their friends from school and from their parish to know the Lord and deepen their relationship with Him.

Many CYA members from Manila and Singapore experience the Lord greatly during their visits to Penang;

some even make radical decisions to follow the Lord after their visit.

Needless to say, the relationship of CYA Penang with the CYA units of neighboring countries (like the countries mentioned above) has been growing steadily through the years.

We can expect the Lord to work more wonders in CYA Penang in the coming years because of the continuous work of evangelization and discipleship among CYA Penang members through the support of CFCC and CYA Manila. We can also expect more interactions between CYA Penang and other CYA units in Asia such as Summer Households, retreats, and youth camps (the next Kairos Malaysia youth camp is in 2022).

SHARING HOPE

I went to experience God in a foreign land with people from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds.

There, we gathered not as parts of different groups, but as one people of God. We all shared the same love and longing for God. I was surprised at how much I could relate with their struggles.

The highlight of my experience was during the last night when we all focused on what God wanted to tell us.

I felt an overwhelming and incomparable joy as I raised up all my worries and anxieties to God.

I heard God telling me to cast aside all my doubts and to put all my trust in him, for in Him there is true hope.

I went home with a renewed purpose. I strongly felt God calling me to share the joy and hope that I was experiencing with others even if it would lead me outside my comfort zone. God called me to Malaysia, a place far away from home.

He still calls me to go even further in being His beacon of hope wherever He calls me next.

BEING A LIGHT The entire Kairos Camp has been one of the best experiences of my life so far, and I’d like to believe that my desire to go further out was because of everything that had happened during the camp - talks, meditation time, group discussion, and worship.

Getting to attend the three breakout sessions was my favorite part of the camp:

1. Jesus Among Other Gods I understood that in order for us to be able to be radical disciples who can be beacons of hope to others, we have to fully know God and understand the truths of our Christian faith.

2. Hope in Social Media I was reminded that we can make use of social media to be a source of hope to other people by being more aware of what we post and share, and by using it to spread God's word more.

3. Homosexuality

I realized that even in the most controversial of issues in today's world, we can always be beacons of hope by being full of compassion, respect, and sensitivity towards others.

Through these breakout sessions, I realized that we all can be beacons of hope in a lot of different situations and circumstances and that we should not have to separate our personas as Christ's disciples from the personas we present to the rest of the world. Deepening in our knowledge about our faith and experiencing God's greatness has motivated me to go further out and become a beacon of hope to more people.

Now, I want to be more of a radical disciple for Him. Seeing the other delegates passionately professing their faith made me realize that I should be more of a witness of God's faithfulness and goodness.
