Collectors Clearing Sale to the Max Well-known local collector Max Jones, will be putting the hammer down this week on his valued collectors’ items, so we thought we would go and check it out to see what all the fuss was about.

Max has been collecting for over 40 years with an eye for detail as he watched his father become a collector.

We caught up with Max’s daughter Mel Jones who now has that eye for detail too and who has been helping her dad put the auction together.

“His dad was a collector, so he just followed in his dads footsteps really. A lot of this stuff would have ended up as scrap if dad didn’t pick it up.”

“He is pretty well known in the auction world. Most people when they collect they collect cars, Furphy’s, spoons, well dad just collects anything.”

“Dads dream was to set it up as a Museum but there are too many things to set it up, it’s a big job.”

“It has been five months trying to sort it all out for the auction, you couldn’t get into the shed. It was a massive job to get it to where we are now.”

The clearing sale for this valued collection will be held this weekend and you can expect to find anything and everything old.

“There will be cars, horse drawn, tractors, trucks, garden art, tools, collectable tins, car parts, too many collectables to mention.”

“He mostly went to auctions in NSW, I can remember going off to auctions with him when I was about eight. I’ve done it all my life, so I know what a lot of the stuff is.”

“He calls it rusty gold, he has been doing it pretty much his whole life. It is starting to get a bit hard, it is pretty emotional getting rid of all this stuff,” Mel said.

Like everything old there is a story that goes with it.

Here are a few that Mel shared with us; “There is a story behind these two utes, they were brothers and they lived in Cudal. They never got married or had kids and they grew veggies. They both got quite sick and apparently died within a couple of weeks of each other. They left it in their will that the utes were to be sold at auction and the money was to go to the Cudal Hospital, two months later the Hospital closed. These are both in original condition.”

“This is a Furphy tank, the boys in the war would come get their water out of these. You might have heard of the old saying, ‘you are telling a Furphy’, well I found out the history behind it. The boys would stand around these things getting a drink and they’d be telling tales, this was later than called ‘Furphy’s’.

“This is unique, it is an old whirly bird that you put on the roof. Oh, and I would love that car, it was a Diplomat’s car from the US Embassy so it is rather opulent.

“The green Mercedes is dad’s favourite, he bought it in 79 and has only had one owner,” she said.

The weekend is set to be massive with collectors coming from near and far to see what Max has been hiding all of these years. It is an amazing collection and if you want to see it for yourself head out to the Clifton Grove property, TODAY, Thursday between 105pm for the inspection then things will go under the hammer on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

YOU NAME IT, WE HAVE IT! Come enjoy a family day out at the Southern Cross Street Cruiser Car and Bike Show, along with the Orange Swap Meet on the 25th of March at the Orange Showground.

The day starts at 9am and goes through to midday and is set to be

a great event.

President of the Southern Cross Street Cruisers George Georgiou said, “it is a massive market, you name it, we have it! It is a family day out that happens once a year to raise money for Beyond Blue,

Daffodil Cottage, Street Swags and the Lions Club.”

This is the 13th year for the annual Car Show and the 12th year for the Swap Meet which aims to raise money to support local charities.

There will be food and drinks at the venue, but strictly no alcohol is allowed on the grounds. Be sure to stick around for the trophies for charity car and bike show entrants.

The Southern Cross Street Cruisers is a family orientated community

group that you can join, even if you don’t have a collector’s car. It is all about coming together and raising some money for charity.
