Gracing the cover of our ‘Your Wheels’ section this week is a beautiful 1937 Cadillac Sedan. It has an interesting story to tell The vehicle was assembled at the General Motors plant at Pagewood NSW under an agreement with General Motors USA to assemble the vehicles in Australia.

Twelve cars arrived in Australia in crates and were assembled. This car bears the body plate no:7.

World War II stopped this agreement as the motors were now required to power the Sherman Tanks which had one motor on each wheel.

Owner Owen Magill explains, “My

father purchased the car in 1956 for 400 pounds from Mr Keith Newland of 497 Parramatta Road Leichardt NSW. I still have a copy of the original receipt and first registration certificate that confirms these details.” (shown in image) “The car sat in the garage at the family home at Daceyville NSW for over 25 years. Dad wasn’t one to spend money to keep the car in the condition it deserved, so there it sat looking very sad.

“In 1991, after my Father passed, I purchased the car from his estate.

“I remember the day we took the Caddy out of the garage. After removing all types of rubbish that had been stored around it for years, we found it had four flat tyres that had distorted from sitting on a dirt floor. A lot of the upholstery had been eaten out by vermin, but the car was complete with all jewellery, everything was still there and in good condition. My eldest son Glenn is a motor mechanic and worked on it to get it going. He finally got a spark and it sprung into action, it then broke an oil ring!

“We had a tilt tray tow truck come from Narrabeen to Daceyville to pick up the Caddy and bring it to Bayview where we lived at the time.

It was a strange feeling, seeing this beautiful vehicle on the road for the first time in 25 years, coming over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and up the expressway it was really a sight to see, she got lots of looks, waves and toots along the way. “Over the next five years we dismantled the whole car, we were determined to get it back to its previous glory and get rid of the hideous red paint and back to the cream colour it started life with.

For those readers old enough, I thought a bit of personal nostalgia might give you a chuckle or two. For those much younger, what I’m about to share will probably sound very foreign and may even go straight over your heads! It’s a few recollections about the experiences I had with my very first car, over 50 years ago.

irst laugh would have to be the photo. That’s me, circa 1965/66, outside our home in Paddington, Sydney, with my pride and joy, a second-hand Morris 1000 complete with side flipper turning indicators. We called it Sexy Sue, it was a light blue colour and I bought it second hand from a dealer called C.V. Holland (no relation) at Rockdale in Sydney. That’s me with a lot more hair, a lot more debt, a lot less weight, a lot less experience and way before I became the far more knowledgeable and mature driver I am today.

Memories of my time with Sexy Sue came flooding back when my wife and I saw some of Sue’s rellies at the Gnoo Blas Car Show a week or so back. We had some great times and we had some interesting experiences and I’m sure other readers of our vintage will relate to some of the things we did back then, things you just couldn’t do in this day and age. For example, back then our family tradition was to buy a real tree for Christmas and living in an old terrace house with 10 ft ceilings, it was always a BIG tree. One year I recall buying a huge tree and bringing it home aboard Sue. There was no way we could fit it in the car so it’s sticking out the window and a friend is hanging out one window hanging onto the tree all the way home. Please don’t try this today!

Another time, my wife Jackie and I agreed to drive a friend from Sydney to Tamworth to attend a funeral. What a trip that was! We still regard it as the trip from hell! Around Taree on the way up, the

muffler fell off, so we’re driving through town early in the morning, and you can imagine the noise, looking for a repairer. We got that sorted but that was only the start. On the way back, I somehow missed a turn to Sydney at Singleton and wound up 40ks off course at Jerry’s Plains. When we finally turned back, I just had to see how I missed the turn, it mustn’t have been very clear. Turns out the sign to Sydney was a monster about 50 ft x 50 ft and right there in front of me. I’ve never lived that one down and Jerry’s Plains is etched in my family’s memories for ever, and they draw it as a weapon every time I say I know where we’re going. That along with another experience when I decided to take a short cut from Parramatta to Sydney and ended up at Hornsby. To this day, I still don’t know how that happened.

Meanwhile, back to the trip from hell. The muffler falling off, the Jerry Plains adventure was not all that happened. Somewhere down the Putty Road, the radiator boiled, and I needed some water, to at least try and keep us going. We found some water in a dam, but I had to negotiate some cattle, bulls included, and being a greenhorn from the city I did the only think I could think of, I mooed at them, a bit like Dory talking to the whales in the Finding Nemo movie. Don’t laugh, I think they liked me. Anyway, I got the water and that got us another few miles but that’s all. The problem was the fan belt had broken. Now this WILL make you laugh. Somehow, I was able to use the terry towelling cord off Jackie’s dress and tie it around the fan belt wheel. It worked!

Whatever I did, it kept it turning enough to get us to a property we found with a whole lot of old cars and vehicles laying around. The bloke on the property was super helpful and miraculously able to find a fan belt off a tractor or something that fitted Sexy Sue. It was ‘almost’ enough to get us the rest of the way home safely. ‘Almost’ meaning there was still one last setback to overcome, a flat tyre at Windsor.

Deflated somewhat, but eventually we made it.

What a trip it was!

Can you imagine trying to do that with the cars of today? I can’t. We had many great adventures in Sexy Sue and I still cherish the memories, far more than those in any other car we’ve owned. I hope my story gave you a chuckle and reminded you of some happy memories from your driving past.
