Introducing Your Wheels!.....but why?

Simple answer, it seemed a really good idea at the time.

Seriously though, let’s face it, most of us couldn’t live without our set or sets of wheels. Be it a car, truck, bike, mobile scooter, golf buggy or something else, wheels are a big part of life. You could even extend that to prams, skateboards, roller skates and so on.

In our case, Your Wheels is a new segment to bring our readers further information and enjoyment involving anything wheels, and typical of Orange City Life, no two weeks are likely to be the same. You could find anything in amongst the pages, but hopefully, always something to spark your interest or that you’ll benefit from.

To kick things off, we have a bit on car finance, a bit on trouble shooting, a pretty snazzy car on our cover page and we introduce our own new, or old, depending on your viewpoint, OC Life car that has been all dressed up!

We hope you enjoy our first Your Wheels and as the weeks and months unfold, you’ll come to look forward to each week’s issue. We’ll certainly try hard to keep it interesting and relevant.

3 WAYS TO PAY FOR YOUR NEXT CAR

Buying a car is a big decision. After all, there are few things we buy in our lives that cost as much to own and run as a car. Therefore, when buying your next car it’s important to give serious thought to how much you can really afford, the long term implications of how much you’re spending and how you’ll pay for it. When it comes to paying for your next car, there are essentially 3 options: pay cash, borrow or get dealer finance.

Pay cash This is by far and away the best way to buy a car! If you haven’t started putting a plan in place to make this happen, it will most likely mean having to put off buying a car for a little while, but if you already have a car that’s getting you from A to B, that may be not bad thing.

That’s because paying cash for a car has some big advantages: • You won’t be indebted to anyone • You own the car outright straight away • You won’t be charged interest, and • You won’t have expensive repayments to make each month

(meaning that money can be put towards better things).

Borrowing for a car Banks, credit unions and building societies all offer personal loans or car loans which you can potentially take out to buy your car now and pay it off over time.

Some will offer the option of a secured loan (if the car is less than 5 years old). This means the car can be used as security for the loan, with that security allowing money to be borrowed at a lower interest rate.

If you’re going to borrow money to buy your next car, getting the

best credit deal is just as important as getting the best deal on the price of the car. It’s worth the time and effort to shop around for the best borrowing options and don’t forget that many lenders will give you ‘in principle approval’ for a loan, giving you the certainty of knowing how much you can borrow.

Dealer finance Car dealers usually have someone working within their business who can help you organise finance on a car. Sometimes there can be good deals on offer, it’s just important to make sure you do

some research to compare what’s on offer with your borrowing options available elsewhere.

One thing to be aware of with dealer finance is that the loan may be set up with a balloon payment at the end. This is a lump sum payment due at the end of the finance period, which makes the regular payments seem low but can cause a headache when it comes time to find the balloon payment at the end of the loan term.

A word of warning, especially for younger cars buyers—don’t forget how lenders make their money! They want to lend you as much as they

can, so it’s always wise to borrow less than you can afford.

And don’t forget the power of cash —If you don’t have enough savings to buy the car outright, you could use them to give you the biggest deposit possible so you borrow less and then spend less on loan interest.

Watch for the signs!

Bob Holland with Motor Mechanic Peter Ball (pictured) We are constantly being reminded about the road toll and our Governments are forever running campaigns urging us to be responsible when driving on our roads. Interestingly, most campaigns focus on the driver and their behaviour, but there’s another side to road safety; making sure your vehicle is, and stays, road-worthy. After all, a car can be a lethal weapon given the right, or rather wrong, circumstances.

For that reason, I thought a few trouble-shooting tips from one of Orange’s highly respected motor mechanics might prove helpful, especially for those of us who wouldn’t know a water pump from an oil pump.

I sat down with Peter Ball for a general chat about a few common things to keep an eye and ear out for when driving our pride and joys. Here’s what he said to watch for –

Wheel alignment/ wheel balance check The signs to look for are abnormal steering, steering wheel vibration or uneven tyre wear.

Action: See a tyre specialist.

Tyre check Check your tyre pressure each month.

Some signs of trouble can be brakes locking up, slipping on wet or greasy surfaces, and of course tyre wear.

Action: See a tyre specialist.

Battery check Batteries often don’t give any warning that they’re going, they just stop. Lazy starting, motor cranking are signs that attention is needed or soon will be.

Action: See a battery specialist.

Alternator check Indicator on dash lights up, flat battery, headlights not as bright as they should be.

Action: See an auto electrician.

Shock absorbers check Abnormalities in handling,

suspension noises, experience a floating or uneven feel.

Action: See a mechanic or suspension specialist.

Exhaust system check Rattling sounds, a different noise or sound from your muffler.

Action: See a muffler or exhaust specialist.

Radiator check Overheating, temperature gauge shows abnormally high reading, coolant is leaking.

Action: See a radiator specialist.

Oil leaks check Oil or unusual fluid appears on driveway or where vehicle has been parked.

Action: See a mechanic.

Drive belts check Air conditioning, power steering, alternator or water pump can be affected by faulty drive belts. Listen for unusual noises in your engine, watch for cracked belts.

Action: See a mechanic.

Brakes check Indicators are abnormal noises, grinding or squealing noises, a vibrating steering wheel when braking.

Action: See a mechanic or brake specialist.

Unusual smells Unusual smells could mean a brake issue, a clutch issue or leaking oil is burning on your exhaust.

Action: See a mechanic.
