WHERE DID YOU LEARN ABOUT MONEY? Sadly, there’s not much of a focus on financial education when we’re growing up. Most of us get our money ‘skills’ from a combination of what we learned from our parents and a lifetime of trial and error.

here are a couple of issues here… with no disrespect to my parents or anyone else’s, the reality is that most of them had little idea of what they were doing because no one ever taught them how to manage money. So, watching our parents work their own way through trial and error isn’t a great start and then we’re left to do the same. That’s the second issue, trial and error is not a great recipe for success when you only have a limited time that you’ll be earning an income… we don’t have time to make mistakes! Growing up, like everyone, I didn’t know anything about money. I grew up in a household where we wanted for nothing and Mum and Dad were financially secure in their retirement, more so from hard work than anything else (and a strong commitment to paying off their mortgage). It’s only since gaining my own knowledge and experience when it comes to wealth creation that I can see that with just a few simple tweaks, Mum and Dad could have had double, triple, maybe quadruple what they have now… but they didn’t know as no one taught them. Today we have a situation in which people are living longer and there is a growing realisation that

then when the realisation comes that we need to do something, we don’t really know where to turn which leads many people into the hands of a financial planner. I’m sure you’ve seen enough financial planning scandals in the news to see how much ‘help’ the financial planning has been in guiding people when it comes to money. So, this is an intervention. Money shouldn’t be a taboo topic, it should be something we are all clued up about, something we all have a reasonably strong concept of and an understanding of what our options are. It is your life and it is your income. It’s certainly not my job to tell you how you should spend either of these. What I do want to do, however, is help you do it with your eyes open so that you can be making informed decisions about your money, not guessing which way to go and hoping for the best via trial and error. Financial education is your path to understanding money and understanding money is your key to making the most of what you earn. Make this the moment you decide to get the right information in your hands and start driving your money forward with purpose.

The exhibition also presents significant objects d’art from African, South-East Asian and Oceanic cultures. Wildflowers THE

T

he Wildflowers, a duo featuring Andy Baylor and Lucy Lehmann, will present new country songs and fiddle tunes which have a strong local flavour, drawing on traditions of country storytelling and parlourroom entertaining. Lucy Lehmann (guitars, vocals) is an award winning songwriter and yodeler while Andy Baylor (guitar, fiddle, vocals) is a wellknown instrumentalist, singer and songwriter. Songs performed by The Wildflowers include: “Cowra Girl”, a story of jealousy and murder down by the old railway tracks set in the Central West; “The Sweet Wildflowers of Home”, a tale of ambition blinding us to the dear things in life; “The New Kettle”, one of Andy’s many traditional fiddle tunes and “Little Illusions”, modern life gone mad. The Wildflowers will be performing at 3pm June 4 at Club Millthorpe, tickets $10 at the door, with all proceeds going to the musicians.
