D
riving through the rich, green countryside surrounding Mudgee, it is easy to see its attraction to the early pastoralists who brought their herds west over the Great Dividing Range in the 1820s. From a single bark general store on the banks of the Cudgegong River, Mudgee grew slowly but steadily over the next few decades. It was in the 1850s that gold was discovered in nearby towns such as

Hargraves and Gulgong, that Mudgee boomed, becoming a prosperous regional centre. At the peak of the gold rush, Mudgee was servicing a population of 20,000 people and many grand buildings from this period remain giving the town a unique charm. While visiting it is well worth taking a stroll through the Mudgee town centre, which is home to a number of beautiful heritage-listed buildings.
Mining still plays a large role in the local economy today, although it is coal, not gold, that draws miners to the region. But it is the many excellent wineries surrounding Mudgee that has sparked the tourist boom of recent years. With over 40 cellar doors to choose from in the area, including well-known premium labels such as Logan Wines, Robert Oatley Vineyards and Robert Stein, there’s
more than enough to fill a weekend, or several weekends, for the most ardent oenophile. There are several local tour companies eager to show you around the vineyards. Mudgee Wine and Country Tours, Mudgee Explorer Tours and the Mudgee Tourist Bus can cater to couples as well as small and large groups. For something a bit different there’s Mudgee Trike Tours, who can show you all the local sites
from the back of a custom trike or in an open Saab convertible. Or, if you are feeling a little more adventurous, Mudgee Helicopters can fly you from cellar door to cellar door -- they even offer a pub crawl package to iconic country hotels. When it comes to dining in Mudgee, you really are spolit for choice these days. If you want to treat yourself to an unforgettable dining experience,

look no further than the Pipeclay Pumphouse, located around 8 kilometres from Mudgee at Robert Stein Wines. The restaurant has rustic charm and a great outlook. Try the degustation menu with matching local wines; you won’t be disappointed! The Zin House is another exceptional restaurant worth a visit. Run by award-winning chef Kim Currie, The Zin House has earned a Chefs Hat in
the Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Food Guide for the past three years running.
