1935 Chevrolet Standard Restored by the grandson and grandfather team of Mitch and Sel King, Sel brought this baby 21 years ago. It took the two of them 12 years to restore the vehicle before it was back on the road in 2010. It has an original engine 181 cu in (cubic inch) engine with a three-speed crash box all fully rebuilt. Mitch said, “Parts came from as far away as the USA as we wanted it fully original. The interior metal work is hand painted for
wood grain effect with interior trim which was done in Molong. “We had a full bare-metal respray, there was not a bolt left untouched. You need to look at the specifications for that vehicle and make sure you get the right oil, you shouldn’t mix oils. Our computers are set up for the customer to use, put in your make and model and it will tell you the right oil for the right brand. Similar to coolant; you shouldn’t mix coolant either. What are some of your most popular products? Roof racks. We sell and fit quite a few of the Rhino roof racks. And stereos as well, that is one of our main lines. e Siobhan just loves th
ADRENALINE RUSH Young local mechanic Siobhan O’Brien loves what she does, and she is just as at home working on V8 supercars as your family sedan. The 22-year-old from Parkes made the move to Orange in February after taking a job at Peter Ball Mechanical on Peisley Street. On weekends, when most of us put our feet up and seek a bit of a break from our day-to-day work lives, you’ll find Siobhan hard at work fine-tuning an old BF Falcon in preparation for the next round of the Kumho Tyre V8 Touring Car Series. “It’s the Dial Before You Dig car, number 69,” said Siobhan. “My team
are in Young, that’s where they are based, and I go there multiple weekends to help get the car ready and set up to go racing. We do five rounds a year and they are all over. We go to South Australia later in the year and in two weeks I’m going to Phillip Island.” This is Siobhan’s second year as a mechanic with the team, but she has spent the last three years working in the motor racing world. “The opportunity came up when I was at TAFE for my trade to go to Bathurst, that’s where I got involved,” said Siobhan, who even got to spend time in the pits with
the Red Bull Holden Racing Team at the 2017 Bathurst 1000. “I did that for a couple of years and I met the guys I’m working for now through that. He was racing in the Toyota 86 series and we fixed his 86 up in Sydney.” Siobhan has long had an interest in all things mechanical. Her grandfather, a fitter and machinist, ran a business out the back of her family home and Siobhan said her love of cars came from spending time in his workshop while growing up. But just how much she enjoys being involved in motor racing came as a surprise to her.
“No, it didn’t really interest me. I’d watched the Supercars on TV, but I never had really wanted to go, but then as soon as I started getting involved, I was hooked,” she said. “It’s full on, from the second you get there to the second you leave it is go, go, go, go, go the whole time. The car will come in off the track and you’ve got to check it over, set it up and get ready for the next race in two hours’ time, if that. “The adrenaline is definitely one thing that grabs me. And the hard work. I love the hard work and the environment – it’s all friendly, but it is still competitive. I love it, I do.”
Both the auto repair industry and world of motor racing are known for being male-dominated, but it is not something Siobhan thinks about. “It feels normal to me. I don’t come to work and feel like ‘the girl’, I just feel like a person which is good and the same with racing as well. It doesn’t worry me,” she said. So, after spending so much time trackside has Siobhan ever been tempted to get behind the wheel herself? “No, too much for me,” said Siobhan. “I’d rather be under them, than in them.”
