more inviting and engaging space. I felt it just needed love when I arrived, and I feel like when you drive past you can see that now,” said Sarah. The Cumnock Pre-School has a few events coming up that are worth keeping an eye out for and Sarah also wanted to say a big thank you. “We are doing a Dancing with the Stars night in October for adults, just a night to raise some money. Then in August we are having a Movie Night over in the Hall for the children. “Thank you to Jill and Dave Brodie for the design and construction of the Hungry Caterpillar. We all love it!” Sarah said.
a lot nicer now. The kids love it and they all know the story. It is nice that they can relate to it and see it when they come to the Pre-School,” said Director Sarah Evans. The school has been hard at work and a lot of that has to do with the Director Sarah. “I have been teaching here for 3 and a half years now. We have 38 kids enrolled. We have a lot of children who travel from Molong and Manildra to come here so it is really good. “We have done a lot. We have put in a new garden at the front and lots of little things like that. My goal has been to sort of put Cumnock on the map and make it a
on his family, friends, and the first responders who helped save him. He’s also working to shine light on inspirational individuals, families, and organizations who are using personal pain to help others find the hope they need to heal. A truly inspiring and eyeopening story that is worth seeing. For the event to go ahead in Cudal enough tickets must be sold in order to fund the event. WHAT’S HAPPENING AROUND THE CENTRAL WEST | WITH TANEIL THORNBERRY | taneil@oclife.com.au
Peter & Shirley just like living here Cumnock is a small village 15 minutes from Molong and it has sure seen some changes over the years.
P
eter and Shirley Downey have lived in Cumnock for most of their life and they tell us what life was like in Cumnock back when they were growing up. “I have lived in Cumnock all my life, 71 years, except for 3 years away at boarding school and 3 years working on a farm near Yeoval. “It was a bit quiet growing up here, but we always made our own fun. There was no TV’s and our parents were very poor and couldn’t afford toys, so we used to go digging out rabbits and swimming in creeks,” said Peter. Peter says he had some pretty memorable and scary moments growing up in Cumnock. “One thing I have never forgotten is that we shot a bloke through the leg when I was about 11 years old. We were at the rubbish tip firing this 22 rifle and we thought we would try to hit this shed up in the paddock that was used to wash all the sanitary pans out. We never thought that anybody would be in there. We let about 20 bullets off and this old guy came out hollering as we shot him in the leg. That was the scariest thing
and we were worried as hell. “In 1955 I was in a head on train crash near Yeoval. I was lucky as some kids went through the window,” said Peter. Peter and Shirley say they always knew one another growing up but they didn’t go together until later in life. “We have been together for 33 years. We knew each other as kids. I then went through a divorce and about 7 years later I got with Peter at a Prawn and Chicken Night at the Club. “We had 7 children between us. I had three kids and Peter had four,” said Shirley. Going on holidays was always a great adventure as you can imagine with nine of them. “When we went on holidays we had a combi van that fitted 9 and we would go up to Queensland and we never lost one of them. “We used to book into this big high rise in Queensland, but we couldn’t have seven kids there, so we would sneak them in one by one,” Shirley laughed. Peter and Shirley are both heavily
involved in the community and they both have received Citizen of the Year. “I do everything in the town. I used to be treasurer of the football club when it was going. I was involved in the Golf Club, Squash Club, Show Society and the Bowling Club. We tried to do as much as we could to keep them going. We are both life members of the show society now,” said Peter. Peter is the local builder in town and you could say that he has built most of town now. “When I was away at school there was a handyman there and I used to help him every chance I got. My
father was also a builder, but he passed away when I was young. I have worked for myself since 1978 as a builder. I do bricklaying, concreting and anything really,” said Peter. Cumnock used to be quite a big farming community but Peter and Shirley say there are just no jobs here anymore. They still love Cumnock though as it’s home. “It has died over the years. We used to have a grocer, a butcher, a bank and two pubs. We only have the corner store and the Ag and Vet in town now. “There are around 230 people in town now and there is 450 on the
mail run. When something is on everyone comes together to help. “I just like being here, it’s home. I would rather live out in the country than live in Sydney. I hate going to Sydney. There’s too many people there,” said Peter. Peter and Shirley say their greatest achievement was getting their kids to 21 alive, they laughed. Here are some wise words to leave you with. “Just be nice to people, be kind and I don’t believe in this bullying. If you are nice to someone they should be nice back to you and just try your hardest at whatever you do,” said Shirley. JULY 5–11, 2018

surprising to me to see how much of that is happening and I am always delighted to see that. “This year we have quite a strong show of paintings, but all different styles of painting. We have some moving sculptures, weaving using traditional techniques, steel sculpture and ceramics. Each person is so different to the next and that’s what I love about this,” said Brad.
