Talking POINTS
with BOB HOLLAND
Water and weather have dominated a lot of talking points over the last week or so. Weâve had snow, wind and rain lately not to mention freezing temperatures, but on the upside our water storage is around 50% bringing us down to Level 4 water restrictions. Level 3 is now even being talked about.
Opening-up vacant main street shopfronts to local artists, he believes, would revitalise our central business district, provide our coronavirusimpacted arts scene with fresh opportunities, and create a vibrant and colourful industry that would attract thousands of visitors to Orange. But as a relative newcomer (he moved here two yearâs ago and has spent most of that time in his studio) he simply doesnât know where to start. âIt would be a great idea for both the community and the artist,â the expatriate American said. I moved here basically because I was told that had a good arts scene⌠but thereâs not that many venues for artists to show their works,â he said. âI just need a name; to know who to talk to,â he pleaded.

POLICE, CHILDREN CHECKS UNDER âMUNRO DOCTRINEâ Background police and working-with-children checks on all local government candidates before next yearâs council elections could be mandatory if a proposal from Councilor Scott Munro becomes reality. âWeâre so stringent with everything else, but not with this. We all hold ourselves as leaders of the community and people have a right to have faith in that,â Cr Munro said. Cr Munro is seeking to have a resolution passed at Novemberâs Local Government Association conference to be forwarded to the Local Government Minister for consideration. However, Orange Council must first approve this seemingly-common-sense proposal with a number of councilors reportedly balking at the added cost of the check to candidates.

HE RTS FOR ORANGE
Our Hearts for Orange initiative has started to strike a chord with people and thatâs very encouraging. There are a lot of challenges for places like Orange during the pandemic and I have big hopes that what weâre doing will have a huge impact on our fortunes as a City over the next few months, especially among our retail sector. A big TV campaign on Prime TV will really kick things off from the weekend of Sept 5/6 so keep an eye out for that. A lot of events continue to be cancelled which is a shame but necessary. With fewer things for people to do, there may be a bit of a silver lining in there for business owners as one pastime that can still be enjoyed freely is shopping. If you do, make sure you spend as much as you can here at local Orange shops and businesses, or as Hearts for Orange is asking âif you love Orange, spend your money where your heart is!â Over the last week Iâve heard some rumblings from a couple of people that Iâve become very negative and that many of my comments in Newswatch are not helping. Itâs only one or two people, but they are people who I care about. I must say that I am a man on a mission, and I do have an agenda but hopefully in the fullness of time, a lot of good will be seen to come out of it. Despite what people may think, I always try to maintain my claim that what we do is done with integrity, wisdom and balance and sometimes that can mean one has to swim against the tide, or go against popular thinking. On that, keep in mind our Back Page is for anyone who wants to share a viewpoint, challenge something they read in Newswatch or anything else of value. I also donât mind if you want to take a potshot at me too.

To create more jobs by helping businesses prosper by fostering community pride and involvement
