Someone sent me an article last weekend which told of the changing habits of people following the Covid crisis, particularly in the way they do business. It was very interesting for a number of reasons but for me personally, it confirmed that what we’re doing with our Hearts for Orange initiative is good and timely right now. Keeping our local businesses profitable is crucial if we don’t want to see increasing unemployment numbers across our City. All of us need to spend as much money as we can here locally, not buying things online that are available here in Orange, not giving local work to tradespeople of firms who are not based in Orange, donating where ever possible to local charities and causes before other ones and so on. Please let me be clear; I’m not suggesting there is one size that fits all in this, but I am suggesting that you think before you spend your money on anything, and if there’s no valid reason not to spend your money here in Orange, that you choose an Orange shop or business for what you need. If enough people do this, the difference it will make to our economy, to job creation, to the mood of people and so on will be significant, promise!

Codey’s Palettes and Paintbrushes — MELISE COLEMAN —

23-year-old Codey Mchatton is one of the most humble and incredibly talented individuals I’ve met. So humble, at one stage throughout our interview Codey stopped to say, “I feel so bad taLking about myself, I want to hear about you and your work!” I’m telling you, she’s a complete delight.

In her second story bedroom you’ll find Codey sitting with a palette and paintbrush most afternoons.

Her most recent work is an incredible plant mural creatively splashed across a wall at Groundstone Café. Each stroke feeling like a lovely postcard from where you’d rather be.

But it’s thanks to Codey’s Mum that an initial creative spark was born. “Mum did signwriting before she had me,” Codey explained, “When I was younger I was sat in front of David Attenborough, yellow encyclopedia books and she used to give me colouring in and also her old signwriting stuff, which I’ve still got. There was always something to keep me busy. I also used to collage pages from National Geographic. It was my way of processing the world.”

In high school and still to this day, Art became a real outlet for Codey. “I used to get my rubber taken off me at school because I kept rubbing everything out and totally erasing any sense of failure,” Codey laughed, “Sometimes I still have to hide the rubber on myself today.”

My favourite medium to work with is water colour, and it’s for that reason, I can’t rub it out. It’s just magic on the paper, you lay the water down and add some colours and wait for it to dry.

I’m also leaning in to more abstract stuff now, I used to be an absolute perfectionist,

like I would only draw real stuff and real pictures, to get me in the zone I have to be listening to music and sometimes I will listen to the same song like eight times on repeat to stay in that zone.”

Codey described her art as an experience or a moment in time throughout her life,“It will start with something that I’m feeling or thinking about, or someone who has inspired me - which could be in the form of another artist.

I love the collaboration side of creativity too. I remember I was so hurt when I asked someone a question, they made fun of me because it was a question that I could have ‘googled’, that hurt me so much,” Codey smiled, “I thought no you know about this and I want you to teach me! I think making a conscious effort is important - I’ll never hide my processes and I love seeing others too.”

A solo image of a magpie stands out in Codey’s studio, “This is one of the first things I painted after not being well for a long time,” Codey explained, “It was the first thing I was really happy with and helped me in coming back into feeling human again. I painted it for my ‘farm Nan’. My Nan had this magpie called Maggie that she would feed every day.

That painting really brought me back in to myself again and I was really scared that was something I was going to lose.”

There’s no stopping her now, recently

Codey has sought creative inspiration from bodyscapes, having some friends pose for her as she sketches. “I never used to draw guys, it was always women but I’m trying to challenge myself and I’ve been loving it. I thought to myself - so this is what it’s like to be inspired by someone. Drawing is kind of meditative for me, because you have to be able to control your breathing so you control your strokes.

Now, working as a School Learning Support Officer at a local Primary School, Codey can pass on her own experience and passion, “For me Art was always a way of pulling everything together. I think the hardest thing is trying to help or teach someone else enough of what they need to know, to do what they want to do and to go their own creative way.”

The future holds so much in the way of plans for Codey. “In the next three years I want to open my own business or share a space with someone, I want to have a tutorial space where people can come and make art, or learn about music or even drama.

Something that brought me out of my shell was drama and art classes. I want to facilitate that here. Having a permanent space for those things is my goal.

I’m just so grateful for the inspiration, the outlet- everything. The businesses I work with are people I adore and aspire to be like as well. It’s good to see an insight to that as well, them saying ‘we love you and we want you to do this too.’”

WHO DO YOU BELIEVE? I watched a movie based on a true story last weekend where a young black American was accused of rape, he spent 6 years in goal followed by 5 years on parole, all before a caring lawyer who ran a firm called The Centre for Innocence was able to have the charges dismissed after proving he was innocent. This same lawyer is credited with helping over 20 people prove their innocence and he did it all for free. This proves without a shadow of a doubt that sometimes we get it wrong.

Right now, I personally am fighting a battle to convince certain people that what they are claiming is totally wrong.

No matter what I say, they don’t seem to want to believe me. I won’t elaborate on that issue here because it’s not relevant.

Last weekend in our Newswatch newspaper, we ran a column by a lady who claims that not just one Doctor, but hundreds globally claim there are simple and readily available cures for Covid-19. The article was quite long and comprehensive and I’d encourage you to read it. That said, and despite how convincing the article and the Doctor’s arguments may appear, those who make the decisions appear to reject this Doctor and co.’s evidence. How often do we hear such stories? For average Joe’s like you and me, it really does come down to a case of who do you believe, especially when many of the world’s great discoveries have been made by people who dare to think differently or who were vilified for their work at the time.

That column in Newswatch will very likely divide people, it’s very controversial and already at least one person close to me thinks I have been irresponsible in publishing it. Such viewpoints more often than not, conjure up thoughts of conspiracy theories. People seem to

prefer to trust the authorities rather than listen to smaller voices, even if they have unbelievable experience and credibility in the matter being discussed. A very topical example of what I’m saying is climate change. We have eminent experts on one side saying one thing, and eminent sceptics on the other side who won’t have a bar of what they’re saying. Of course, climate change is a bit different, there’s a lot of theorising and speculation because we’re talking about things involving the universe and it’s reasonable to think that might be a bit outside man’s understanding. In the case of a cure for a disease where there is clear evidence and proven results to make a judgement on, you would think it would be easier to prove a case one way or the other. For some reason however, in the same way innocent people can be convicted, people with viewpoints like mine on a particular subject can be dismissed without any testing of theories, even outstanding Doctors can be shut down simply because they are not swimming with the tide. I find this type of thinking beyond belief, and especially when we see what Covid-19 is doing to the world at large.

Imagine, just for a minute, imagine if this Doctor and his colleagues are right and the solution is there right now, imagine if the problem could be addressed that simply? Wouldn’t you think the authorities would put all other notions or pre-conceived ideas aside and thoroughly prove what the Doctor is saying one way or the other, once and for all?

This is not just a case of an innocent conviction, it’s not just an insignificant businessman trying to do something good for his community, this is something that is tearing our world apart!

track lives on!

Motor sport lovers have the opportunity to drive at speed around the historic Gnoo Blas track, just as it was in the 1950s… Well, digitally at least.

G

noo Blas hosted races for just eight years (1953 to 1961) but it cemented its place in Australian motor sport history as the birth place of the Australian Touring Car Championship (1960) and where Sir Jack Brabham began his road racing career.

Today, car racing simulator enthusiast and former Orange local Mike Cantwell is helping keep Gnoo Blas alive, recreating a playable track for the PC racing game rFactor2.

“I got into driving games back in the mid-90s with Indy Car racing and Nascar racing and stuff like that but I never got into the track building until 2008,” said Mike.

“Some guys built a really, really bad version of Lakeside Raceway here in Brisbane and I thought, I can do better than that! And that is where the journey started with track building.”

The Gnoo Blas project Mike has been working on these past few months is not all his own work,

OCLife but rather a conversion of a build by Neil Faichney for a previous version of the game.

“It was a project organised by Rod Monk with NSW Tourism to promote Orange, but it was sort of bad timing because it was at the end of the life of rFactor1 and rFactor2 came along about a year after,” said Mike “It was a really good job that Neil had done and it just seemed a shame that no one saw it any more. So that’s what I asked permission to bring it over to the modern game and give it better textures and just fine tune things.”

Since converting the track for the new game, Neil has also been adding details, like trees and buildings to try and get it looking closer to how it actually was.

“It is really hard to find enough photos from the 1950s to get it accurate. It can’t be 100 percent accurate, but it will be a good representation of what the track was like,” he said.

“The Old Orange Crew group on Facebook have helped out a lot, but there is still a few photos I’d like to see, some of the old houses and even some earlier photos of the hospital and of the street from

Windsock Corner that runs up to the railway and there is a whole heap of houses there that weren’t in the original game, so it would be nice to get some photos of that area. I’m sort of fussy and I want things to be as accurate as I can get.”

The Gnoo Blas track conversion has been about 200 hours of work so far for Mike, although that’s nothing compared to the Lakeside Raceway build.

“Lakeside I did from scratch and there is probably 1000 hours in that! It is just a passion to try and see these old tracks preserved — Oran park is another one I got permission to convert over.

“A lot of these tracks just don’t exist anymore and I’m trying to preserve them —even if it is just digitally —preserve these tracks so people can race on them and enjoy them in a simulation environment.”

Golf day to remember Al Gordon — JOHNATHAN ROE —

Registrations are filling up fast for the Al Gordon Memorial Golf Day at Wentworth Golf Club in October.

Al Gordon was a keen local golfer and respected family man, who sadly passed away in 2016 after a long battle with cancer.

“Al was a massive golfer, he was very well respected in the golfing community, so we wanted to honour his name, get a couple of his mates and anyone else who wants to get involved in it and get out there and play,” said organiser Michael Paddison, who is hoping this memorial golf day will become a much-anticipated fixture on the local golfing calendar.

“We really wanted to make it a very highly anticipated golf day for people for a couple of reasons,” he said.

“Obviously, to mark the memory of Al Gordon, also to raise awareness and bring the focus back to raising money for the Cancer Council, and to have a marquee day on the calendar.

“The Cancer Council are pretty excited by this,

obviously they have had no events or chances to raise any money lately and it would be nice to give them a big fat check at the end of the day.”

The 18-hole, 2 Person Ambrose Handicapped competition kicks off on October 9th with a Shotgun start at 12pm. Cost is $50 per person.

“We’ve got some really amazing sponsors onboard and we’ve got over $5000 worth of prizes,” said Michael.

“The major prize is Titleist Golf Bags for the winning team, but we want to keep it fun and light-hearted, so we’ve got some cool novelty things there like on the 10th hole we’re hiring a port-a-loo and it will sit halfway down the fairway and if anyone hits it there’ll be a pretty good prize.”

“We want to make it so people enjoy the day and just have as much fun as we can so straight away they book in for next year knowing it is going to be a good day out.”

“It will be a great day,” said Wentworth golf pro Todd Brakenridge. “And anyone can play you don’t have to be a member of any golf club, we’ll give you a handicap on the day if you are not a member and it’s completely open to men and ladies.”

But numbers are strictly limited and there are only about 30 spots remaining, he said.

“It is filling up fast, so give us a call at the pro shop or pop in as soon as possible. Once the sheet it full we’ll create a reserve list, but with all the COVID restrictions around we can only set the number to a certain amount,” said Todd “This will be the first charity corporate golf day we’ve done this year, so it will be great to get this one under the belt and it’ll be the start of daylight savings too, so it is a nice busy time for golf and a good way to kick it off.”

Lifeline Central West is actively seeking more volunteers and Deanna is hoping to encourage more people to take plunge and do something that really does make a difference.

“I’d been thinking about it for a while because I have taught in a high school and so I was aware of the need for mental health support for young people and of course for all ages,” she said.

“I was a loose end, because I haven’t been working, and thought it was something I could do to give back to the community, but in doing so the rewards have been so great!”

After observing other volunteers on their shifts and then taking part in supervised calls, Deanna now volunteers twice a week.

“I just enjoy it so much. You are helping people with a mixed bag of different issues — COVID particularly is one of the big issues, but then there are relationship issues, money issues, housing. But at the end of the session, you feel like you are helping and you are giving back,” said Deanna.

“They like you to do roughly three hours a week, but I just enjoy it so much and I get a lot get a lot out of it, that I try to do two shifts a week and sometimes I might do a longer shift.

Because of COVID-19 restrictions, Deanna and other volunteers now have to undertake the training remotely via ZOOM.

“And you have a break now and then and chat with the other volunteers. I made a lot of great friends when we were doing the e-learning and now we are on the phones volunteering together, so it has been really good.”

“The training was fabulous. You don’t even have to leave your home; you just log onto your computer and they give you heaps of support if you are struggling with technology,” she said.

Beer flows again at Club Millthorpe It has been a long time between drinks for Millthorpe’s bowlers, but the beer taps are flowing again at last.

T

he club, which is the location of Blayney Shire’s only bowling greens, closed its doors in March as coronavirus measures shutdown the country. Like others in the industry they tried to make do as they could, selling takeaway stock and waiting for permission to reopen once more.

The club chose to delay the reopening, given that winter is a quieter time on the bowling greens, but last Thursday Orange City Life was there to see the first beer poured for thirsty patrons.

“We had a bit to sort out and winter time is a quieter

“We are the only bowling club left in the Blayney shire, otherwise if you want to play bowls you have to travel to Orange or Bathurst... So we have to start looking after the bowlers and keep them here.”

At the moment the club is only opening just two days a week, with social bowls at 12.30pm Thursdays and 1pm Fridays, but the club expects to open further as the weather warms and the coronavirus restrictions

(hopefully) ease.

Bowlers from Blayney were due to have a roll last Thursday, but the damp weather kept them off the greens.

“We’ll just gradually build and build until we are fully open again, and hopefully down the track COVID will lift a bit and we can squeeze a few more in, because we are limited on numbers we can have in the club,” said Darrell, which limits the club’s ability hold functions.

“But with COVID it is just wait and see and hopefully it will get a bit better and we can bring more people in.”

Doctors are one of the most trusted professions in the world. It is an exciting and rewarding career with many benefits, but it certainly isn’t for everyone. A lot has been written about the qualities that make a good doctor, and while we expect our doctors to have integrity, be truthful, dependable and compassionate, not many of us think that medicine is a viable career choice for ourselves.

How long does it take to become a doctor?

That depends on whether you decide on an undergraduate or graduate entry course, and on the type of doctor you want to become. You should reasonably expect that becoming a qualified doctor in any field will take around ten to 12 years, which includes your medical school education. While this may sound like a long time, you’ll start getting paid as soon as you commence your Internship in a hospital, which is a compulsory first year of clinical training once you graduate from medical school.

When you’ve completed your Internship, you can apply to training programs to become a specialist in a certain field, such as General Practice, or Psychiatry.

The length of training depends on the specialty, and at the end of this training you will be eligible to apply for a Fellowship in your chosen field. Many doctors continue studying to pursue their medical interests in

a sub-specialty or may choose to undertake research.

There are various choices and decisions to make, and often these are made along the way. Many students finish medical school and are still undecided on their final career path.

Do I have to move to a capital city?

Studying medicine is a bit boring… isn’t it?

There are around 20 medical schools in Australia, and most are in capital cities such as Sydney, Canberra, or large regional cities such as Newcastle and Wollongong. Fortunately, from 2022 the University of Sydney will commence offering its complete Doctor of Medicine program at its rural clinical school in Dubbo. This is a graduate entry four-year program.

Western Sydney University and CSU will also be offering a five-year undergraduate Joint Program in Medicine in Orange from 2021.

Will it be as good as studying in Sydney?

We all know the benefits of living and working in a rural area, the short commute to work and lifestyle to name a few. But there are other advantages to studying medicine in a rural centre such as Dubbo.

You’ll be working in small clinical teams within a close-knit medical community and the added benefit of access to world class academics at the University of Sydney. Smaller class sizes mean more specialised and personal tuition in our new facilities

Advances in medical science are enabling doctors to work in ways not imagined 10 years ago. The mysteries of DNA are being unlocked using nanoscale technologies. Smartphones are being used to check for heart arrhythmias and monitor sleep patterns, and the explosion of tech-driven innovations will reshape the way medicine and healthcare is delivered in the future. You could be pioneering ways of delivering health care using robots in rural and remote areas or assisting surgeons ‘virtually’ in the operating theatres.

How do I apply?

To apply for the University of Sydney’s Doctor of Medicine program in Dubbo, you will need to have some prior qualifications and are required to sit the GAMSAT exam, which is held twice per year.

The GAMSAT is the Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test and is designed to assess the applicant’s capacity to undertake high-level intellectual studies. The test is divided into three

parts, the first is based on humanities and social sciences, the second is written communication, and the third (and largest section) is reasoning in biological and physical sciences. An interview is also part of the application process. The next GAMSAT is being held in September 2020. There is no limit to the number of times you may sit the test, however the University of Sydney requires the test to be no more than two years old at the date of application into medical school. Country Education Foundation of Australia (CEF) have announced the launch of their ‘Make it Possible Rural and Regional Inspiration Hub.’

The Make it Possible Hub aims to inspire rural and regional youth to pursue post school education and training. The hub will connect them to key information, resources, and advice during what can be an overwhelming process to inspire, inform decision making and action.

The ‘Make it Possible Hub’ covers a range of important topics identified by rural and regional youth including money matters, various worries, overcoming obstacles, achievement and success. This unique opportunity also ensures the advice will come from other CEF supported students and graduates who have been in their shoes; because who better to learn from than someone who’s been where you are now?

They now have the wisdom, tips and encouragement to share.

The free resource will complement CEF’s annual Scholarships Guide and University Survival Guide and is designed to broaden country students’ aspirations by providing tailored information and tools they might need in one place in an upbeat and relatable way.

Cody Logan is a current student in Orange who provides advice in the resource. “Sometimes taking on further study can be daunting,” said Cody. “It can be big, it can be scary, and forming friendships can take a while. It is all new experiences, so having support through that journey is just awesome.”

CEF worked with Macquarie University’s (MQU) Widening Participation Unit to develop and launch the resource.

CEF CEO, Juliet Petersen, said she was proud of the collaboration and the work her team has

done to make it a reality, particularly at a time of so much uncertainty. “CEF consulted with our local foundations, stakeholders and supported students throughout six states and territories for this project.

With overwhelming feedback, the stories and studentfocused approach will make this a sustainable project moving forward. This is a highly valuable resource that encourages well informed decision-making surrounding further education for rural and regional 16 to 25-year old’s,” Mrs Petersen said.

Dr Stuart Upton, MQU Widening Participation Unit Interim Head, said “The Make it Possible Inspiration Hub will make for more informed students and break down misconceptions around further education. These resources are a central means of encouragement and we look forward to the hub’s long-term success in inspiring future students.”

A BIG WIN FOR OUR COUNTRY UNIVERSITIES & COMMUNITIES! I’m very happy to report that the changes to the Jobs-Ready Graduates package that I have been pushing for have been endorsed by the Coalition party room. An amended version of the package will now proceed through Parliament with the backing of both the National and Liberal parties.

This is a big win for country universities, students, and our communities.

The amendments have been adopted following my consultations with our regional universities to address three areas of concern: 1. social work and psychology - there’s a shortage of these key health professionals in the bush. Many are women reentering the work force and there is also a higher proportion of Indigenous students. Students on a professional pathway to these professions will now pay a lower course fee than originally planned; 2. grandfathering - so that for students enrolled in a course this year the new course fees will not apply to you, regardless of when you finish your degree; 3. the Tertiary Acccess Payment – this $5,000 payment can now be made by country universities to students, allowing them to compete on a more level recruitment playing field with city universities who have big cheque books.

It’s now up to all MPs to back this critical package, which delivers an additional $400 million for our country universities and students.

I’m also now the custodian of the Housing Plus Teddy Bear, which is currently enjoying a trip to Canberra!

RAMPING UP THE GOVERNMENT'S DECENTRALISATION AGENDA Last week we received a visit from the Federal Minister for Resources, Water and Northern Australia, The Hon Keith Pitt MP. The Minister was on his way to Wyangala Dam, where preparatory works are soon to begin for the expansion of the dam. The expansion will deliver improved water security, drought resilience, and flood mitigation benefits for thousands of residents in the Lachlan Valley. It will also provide local job opportunities during construction.

While Minister Pitt was in Orange, we took the opportunity to meet with local leaders, the Mayor of Orange City Council, Reg Kidd, and the General Manager of Cadia Valley Operations, Aaron Brannigan. We discussed issues surrounding my portfolio of decentralisation, including access to water and other resources, as well as a number of issues specific to the Calare electorate.

They were very useful meetings and a great example of cooperation between different levels of government and private industry.

I am very focused on ensuring that the Government’s new decentralisation agenda takes a holistic approach and proactively deals with any barriers or impediments to regional growth and prosperity.

First Choice Credit Union is celebrating 50 years of community banking in Orange and surrounds

t was on the 27th of August 1970 that the Calare Local Government Employees’ Credit Union came into being to supply a much needed locally-based financial institution to meet the needs of the Boree, Molong, Canobolas and Orange Council employees.

Membership was opened to the wider community in 1995 and renamed First Choice Credit Union in 2008, a move to better illustrate what we stand for, says current General Manager Paul Dawson.

From a first year membership of 204, today First Choice has around 4000 members and branches operating in Molong, Manildra, Cudal, Canowindra and Orange.

“Other financial institutions throw around the title of ‘Community Bank’ but as a local Credit Union that has its foundations in the Orange and Cabonne region, we are the true definition of banking dedicated to serving the local

community,” said Paul.

Star War: A New Hope was actually my very first cinema experience. It was back in the early 80s around the time of the release of The Return of the Jedi. I can clearly remember the opening title crawl, the fanfare of John William’s iconic musical theme and our introduction to the protagonist Luke Skywalker… but that is about all from the first time, as I think I was asleep before Han Solo made it on screen!

Luke Skywalker! He is a bit of a whinger really.

Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker was very underwhelming, but everything else was amazing,” said Maggie.

“The iconic storm troopers — I really am obsessed with the Stormtroopers now after seeing them — and Han Solo! Harrison Ford is just gorgeous, his was the best part by far.”

So for fans like myself, the Odeon 5’s recent screening of the original Star Wars movie was real treat.

But upon leaving my session, I was surprised to overhear a conversation in which I gathered I had shared the cinema with someone watching the film for the very first time! So, tracking down local pharmacist Maggie Steventon, I decided to hear her thoughts on the movie that started one of the biggest film franchises in history?

“I really, really liked the movie!” said Maggie. “I was a bit afraid that I might be a bit hyper critical about it, thinking it all looks a bit old hat, but it never occurred to me at all.”

(Indeed, my thoughts watching it again were how well the original model work and special effects look even today. To me, the real let down were the ‘Special edition’ digital additions from the 90s, which have aged badly.)

“I can see why it has stayed so popular,” said Maggie. “Because it is just put together in a fun way and I really like it.”

When Star Wars first hit the screen, Maggie was living in London and said the opportunity to see it just sort of passed her by.

“I remember the big billboards in and around London for this ‘Star Wars,’ but I was coming back to Australia for Christmas and then back to London and so I just never saw it. I was in the wrong place and the wrong time and then I

didn’t think it would be my thing to go hire it at the video shop, so that’s how I missed it,” she said.

But just a few months ago, Maggie’s daughter happened to mention her housemates had made her sit down to watch Star Wars also for the first time.

“The boys she lives with said you have to

watch it and she found it really enjoyable, so that’s pretty good from a 33-year-old about a movie that’s 43 years’ old! So when I saw it was on at the cinema I thought this is my chance — and I wasn’t disappointed!”

Well, not every part of the movie impressed Maggie.

Following the reopening of the 25m indoor pool, Learn to Swim (LTS) lessons and Social Squads training will resume at the Orange Aquatic Centre in a week’s time.

Orange City Council and staff at the Orange Aquatic Centre have put the following procedures in place that fall into line with Government regulations in a bid to reduce crowding and limit the risk of infection while the centre is in operation, to keep pool users safe.

Previous Learn to Swim class times have been cancelled. Parents must now call to book a place for their children. Cost: $13.20 per class, additional siblings enrolled in same term $11.90.

Operation Christmas Child NEED VOLUNTEERS — MELISE COLEMAN —

Whilst Operation Christmas Child (OCC) has had to adapt to COVID restrictions, it’s all hands-on deck for volunteers of the organisation, with fundraising put on the back burner for many of their scheduled events throughout the year.

With that being said, the volunteers need our assistance.

As COVID-19 restrictions have started lifting the volunteer team in Orange have begun packing the shoeboxes ready to be sent.

With a limit of 12 people in the workspace (usually over 20) the Orange OCC team need more volunteers to help the many materials be packed as well as donations to get the boxes where they need to be.

This year’s distribution from NSW destination is unknown at this stage, though no matter the arrival, it’s going to be well received.

Last year, due to the community’s generosity, Operation Christmas Child Australia and New Zealand was able to give 273,160 children a Shoebox gift.

Volunteer of over 20 years, Robyn Hicks mentioned at such unprecedented times like these, the shoeboxes are needed now more than ever.

“We are very grateful for all members in Orange and surrounding districts in helping us so far, we wouldn’t be able to do it if we didn’t have them and people donating items. We have also been collecting shoeboxes from various shoe stores in Orange, so a big thankyou to those shoe stores who have helped us.”

An appeal for assistance from local Share the Dignity volunteers published in Orange City Life two weeks ago has spurred local Rotarians into action.

Maxine Chapman from Blayney NSW is the next artist to exhibit at the gallery in our bi-monthly Rural Art Exhibition.

We’re so fortunate to have so many talented regional artists exhibit with us and Maxine is certainly no exception.

Maxine is a woman of many talents applying her hands not only to painting but to craft and textiles too. It’s no secret that Maxine has her own regular corner in our gallery and the introduction of her craftwork to that corner has been a great success.

“I just love using my hands,” Maxine says, “I can’t sit down without picking up a bit of crochet work or knitting, it just becomes automatic. I think I’m sitting down for a rest and all of a sudden I look at my hands and I’m crocheting without even realising I’m doing it!”
