As I drove to Bathurst from Orange to BMEC Band Night for the first time, I had a feeling I was in for a treat. The images on Facebook of Senor Cabrales, five men playing assorted folk instruments, had caught my attention and they did not disappoint. I sat captivated and moved, as one of Australia’s most accomplished and respected traditional music ensembles, played their soul stirring tunes. As each set was introduced, they spoke of their origins from provinces and places I was completely unfamiliar with Asturias, Galicia, Basque Country - all in northern western Spain and more well-known Brittany, Scotland and Ireland. Their own members, hailed from northern Spain and Australia, had been deeply inspired by the Asturian band, Llan de Cubel, who they have formed strong musical bonds and friendship with to this day. Senor Cabrales unique sound combines the crisp, bright sound of the Gaita (Astorian
bagpipes), played masterfully by Juan Cordero, along with the hauntingly beautiful low D Irish whistle and tin whistles. Blue Mountains muso, Nick Rigby played bouzouki, with a passionate flamenco style. Roger Hargraves poured himself into his fiddle, with horsehairs flying after one exuberant set. Bruce Cameron added his mandolin and vocals while beside him, Jim McWhinnie hugged his hand crafted bodhran. I was quite mesmorised as Jim’s left hand moved up and down the bodhran skin, releasing and contracting the surface to create a melodic effect whilst his right hand danced rhythmically on the reverse side, adding the ‘heart beat’ to their tunes. Sets included traditional dance tunes, Irish jigs, wedding and funeral marches, Astorian xirandiyes, gaita fandangos, airs and waltzes, and pieces inspired by ‘walking through the wild mountains of Galicia and Asturias’.
