WE NEED A PROJECT TO GET EXCITED ABOUT Our Great Ideas for Orange Competition has come to a bit of a standstill, but we have sure enjoyed all the entries that came through.

ome of the ideas might not have gone anywhere but they got people talking, and who knows where that may lead. This week the boss has asked me to interview him for one last idea, so here it is. “One of the things that I know is a very big topic at the moment is homelessness. I just feel, especially in a place like Orange where it is so cold, the thought of people sleeping out in the weather is just terrible. “The idea is for an Orange Temporary Accommodation (OTA)

and I envisage a 60-room facility, just basic rooms with a shower which will be sufficient for people who would otherwise sleep under the stars, under a tree or on a park bench. Give them a room and a shower and I envisage that there would be a community cafeteria to provide basic meals,” said Bob. The facility would be a community project much like the Ronald McDonald House and the Playground near the Botanic Gardens which was supported by locals, for locals. “In my view we need a project to

get excited about. There is so much need and so much opportunity to do good, and most people are willing to do good, they just need to be organised. “This has the potential, with the right volunteers and help, to be a wonderful asset to the town and an example to other communities. “This is a project that the community can embrace, our community needs that,” said Bob. I think many of us would be surprised as to how many people are homeless in our community, remembering that the term

homelessness refers to those without a safe and secure home. “I want to change people’s circumstances. It is not necessarily for other people to judge how they are in that circumstance, but to extend a hand of friendship or help. “If a lot of people contribute a little, you can do a lot,” said Bob. The Orange Temporary Accomodation would act more as a respite for people and Bob says there is also more to the name. “I have deliberately avoided the term homelessness in the name of the facility as I don’t know that

people’s self esteem would be great if they where to say that they were staying at the homeless shelter, compared to the OTA or in Temporary Accommodation. “We need to be generous and share our wealth and blessings,” concluded Bob. Everyone needs a safe and secure place to call home, especially in the winter months where the thought of sleeping out in this weather would be unbearable. Bob hopes his idea will reach the right people, then at least start a conversation.

The July Acoustic Sunday session which was originally scheduled to include the duo of Steve Appel & Melanie Horsnell, will now only be featuring Melanie Horsnell. Melanie Horsnell has a distinct vocal delivery that can fit into either finely crafted pop tunes or sparser acoustic material, due to its smoothness and how she weaves it in and out of the lovely melodies she has a natural gift for creating. She has built up a very admirable cannon of recorded material since emerging in 2005 with her first album The Adventures of…., a piece of pop perfection that saw her signed overseas to Rounder records, leading to many shows playing the European circuit and a lot of international critical acclaim. Melanie’s song writing has developed

over the years with her arrangements becoming more organic on acclaimed albums The Cloud Appreciation Society & Quatre Chemins, providing a rustic home for her songs dealing with love, relationships, motherhood and other observations of the everyday, which is so perfectly captured on “I Learned How to Love From Songs”. Her styling also has touches of French chic here and there due to the amount of time she has spent performing there. This comes through on her album Dans la mer aussi il y a des étoiles a collection of songs written whilst on tour in France in 2013, with some standards she
