TALKINGFINANCE

WITH DANIEL MCGREGOR

Introducing Daniel McGregor. Daniel operates a business called Wealthtrain, he’s a completely independent financial guru and because money is such an important part of life for all of us, we’ve asked him to share some of his wealth of knowledge and experience with our readers. This week he lays a platform for what’s to follow and that is a weekly column touching on a range of financial questions that many people have.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you would be aware of the banking royal commission, which has shone a spotlight on the toxic culture of the banking and financial services industries. Sadly, the financial advice industry has often attracted the equivalent of dodgy used car salesmen… those with the gift of the gab who could sell ice to eskimos. This has led to scandal after scandal, many people losing their life savings and a general distrust of financial advice in the community. However, there are many, many people in the financial advice industry, including myself, who are passionate about improving the financial lives of as many people as possible and who give advice the way it should be given. Most people I speak to say they don’t know enough to make confident financial decisions and the reality is that financial literacy is quite poor because money skills are not really taught at school or in the workplace. Almost everyone in Australia could benefit from expert financial advice, but a big part of the battle is finding someone you can trust. With that in mind,

How to find financial advice you can trust

here is what to look for to ensure you get great advice and value for money. QUALIFICATIONS Higher education standards are coming and many who’ve been giving advice for years will leave the industry rather than actually do the study required. Up to 8,000 advisers are predicted to leave the industry for that reason. Out of an industry of 25,000 advisers, you don’t need to be a mathematician to see that a significant number of advisers lack the qualifications you probably expect they should have. In fact, 48% of financial advisers do not have a degree! Until recently, it’s been possible to become authorised to give financial advice after completing a 4-day course with no exams. If you knew the person giving you advice had so little in terms of qualifications, would you take their advice? Ensure that your adviser at least has a diploma, advanced diploma or degree in an applicable field such as commerce, economics, finance, accounting or financial planning. Ideally, they should also be a Certified Financial Planner®, the highest financial planning designation worldwide.

HOW THEY GET PAID If your adviser accepts commissions or charges fees as a percentage of how much money you have, then it might be wise to run for the hills. Commissions have in many ways been the driver of dodgy behaviour within the financial advice industry. If someone is incentivised to sell a product instead of giving advice in the best interests of the client, then there’s a reasonable chance the advice isn’t going to be great. As for percentagebased fees, they are simply commissions by another name and the opposite of how professionals charge for their services. There is no other way anyone should be paying for advice other than fee-forservice. Once product commissions and percentage-based fees are out of the mix, a fee-for-service arrangement between adviser and clients leaves little reason to do anything other than simply recommend what is in the best interests of the client (see SMSF message below!).

INSURANCE SALES OR INSURANCE ADVICE? Here’s something worth knowing… many people in town will have sought advice for life insurance and income protection insurance, as they should because these are vitally important and most people are underinsured. These types of insurances are often ‘sold’ by financial advisers who collect huge commissions for selling the products of insurance companies. But those commissions they receive come at the expense of their clients, who will pay 30% more for their insurance EVERY year to fund the commissions payable to the person who sold them the insurance. 30%! IN HOUSE PRODUCTS And finally, be wary of advisers who want to get you into their own in-house products. For example, AMP or bank financial advisers who want to get you out of your highquality industry fund and into their in-house product… the reasoning for which may sound great but is almost certainly not in your best interest. While not an in-house product, it’s also worth noting that you should be highly sceptical of advice telling

you that you need a Self-Managed Super Fund so that you can have ‘control’. While appropriate for a few, most SMSFs have been recommended with a view to the adviser controlling the client, not for the client to have control of their superannuation. The Royal Commission will hopefully be the line in the sand where dodgy advice practices finally become public knowledge. It’s worth noting that only around 20% of people in Australia seek out financial advice, meaning most people never get advice that could make a huge difference. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that 80% of Australians end up relying on the Age Pension in retirement. If you would like advice from a local, highlyqualified, fee-for-service financial adviser or if you would like a review of advice you have previously received elsewhere, then please give me a call on 0411 484 464 to organise a complimentary appointment. Cheers,

Daniel

CALL ME FRANK is a collection of 20 autobiographical stories of men over 50 telling it like it is at this stage of their lives. The stories are honest, sometimes confronting and always inspirational. These heartfelt narratives are also a magnificent response to those sceptics who said that this book would never happen because men don’t reveal their feelings. From being brutally bullied from the age of four at a private school in the UK, to finding love and intimacy at 82, to being ‘menaced’ by the ‘black dog’, to filming with Sir Edmund Hillary, to working as an entertainer on cruise ships and then becoming an Anglo-Catholic priest, to dealing with cancer – the stories spring from the page with vitality, warmth, humour, at times pathos, but are always frank and compelling.

CALL ME FRANK is the companion book to Feisty, Fabulous & 50+, a collection of 21 ‘warts and all’ autobiographical stories of women navigating their way through their 50s and beyond.

Julie is an entrepreneur with a passion for promoting and developing people, which is why she started a speakers and trainers bureau 25 years ago as well as a company focusing on retaining mature age workers and building effective age-inclusive workforces. This kick-started her interest in the over 50s. It also led to her taking on leadership roles in organisations such as Women Chiefs of Enterprises International (WCEI), National Foundation for Australian Women (NFAW), Economic Security 4 Women (eS4W) and Zonta International. Five years ago Julie decided to make a tree change and currently lives in the Blue Mountains. She divides her time between presiding over a community radio station, producing a 2-hour radio program called ARTHouse, her various board/committee commitments and writing. Not forgetting her obsession with beautifully designed hand-crafted jewellery, her love of a good book with a glass of red, theatre, cinema and the exquisite beauty of the Blumos.

20 MEN OVER 50 TELL IT LIKE IT IS

JULIE ANKERS

Author of Feisty, Fabulous & 50+

STORIES OF AUSSIE MEN Author of Feisty, Fabulous and 50+, Julie Ankers will be giving a talk at the Orange City Library on June 21 at 5.30pm, to introduce her new book Call Me Frank, 20 Men over 50 tell it like it is. Julie says, “The book is a collection of 20 autobiographical stories written by men in the 50-85 age group. The stories are about their lives and how life is for them now”. Julie’s first book is about presumptions about retirement and she talks about why she decided to write one specifically

tailored to men. “I decided that men needed their own book because some of their issues may have been different to women’s. I was amazed at the response when I approached men to write their stories. They were amazingly frank, which is how and why I titled the book, so the title is absolutely appropriate!” said Julie. Call Me Frank is a whirlwind of emotions with some stories bound to make you weep and others make you laugh. “I love the humanity of each story. Wherever I speak I talk about these stories with the deference they deserve. “I hope they either see that the book is an affirmation of how well they are living their lives or a gentle nudge to make some changes. The best way to do this is through storytelling,” said Julie. The stories compiled in Call Me Frank are all from Australian men who all come from different backgrounds including engineers, writers, artists, farmers and more. Head along to the Orange City Library on June 21 for this interesting talk from Author Julie Ankers. TT

B O R E N O R E Olive Brown standing in front of the Borenore Corner Store in its hay day.

The End of an Era for Borenore If you happen to drive through the village of Borenore you would have noticed the Corner Store, which has been there for as long as most of us can remember. In March the community saw an end of an era as long-term owner of the store, Olive Brown passed away on March 18. Olive and her husband Warwick operated the store from the time of their marriage in 1947 up until Warwick’s death in 1991. After a few years Olive continued running the store up until 2004 when she retired. The Borenore Store was in the Brown family since 1911 when Warwick’s parents operated it. In the stores ‘Hay Day’ it not only sold fuel and groceries but

newspapers, agriculture chemicals, stock feed and alcohol in later years. “Their service to the district was tremendous! Olive would ring households for their food and grocery order on Tuesday and it would be delivered to the door step on Friday. Fuel could be purchased from the two bowsers just outside the shop doors or bulk orders would be delivered. “Such was customer loyalty that deliveries were even made to people who had moved into Orange. Woollies has only just cottoned onto this type of customer service, where the Browns of Borenore did this for at least 50 years,” said Bernard Duffy. The Borenore Corner Store was the place

Olive Isabel was the 3rd of 9 siblings born on the 17th June 1923 to James Ro bert and Emily McMahon of Boom ey. Allen, the youngest bro ther, is the only surviving me mber of the McMahon family. On the Brown side, Phyllis is the only surviving member of that generation. to be and at some stage even had the post office and the telephone exchange. Along with their many years of service, there were some wonderful long-term employees. “Some of the locals to work for the Browns family were; Reg Job, Keith Sharpe, Keith Parish, Bill Stockman, Greg and Scott Elliott and Lawrence and Malcolm Baker,” said Bernard. Close to 100 years of operation saw the store become the focal point for the community and surrounding villages. Bernard concluded, “Our sympathies and community thanks are extended to Olive’s daughters, Marilyn and Rosemary and families”.
