We’re only a few days into the season, but there has certainly been an autumn feel to the mornings of late.

And there has been plenty going on around the city as you will see inside on our social pages and there is another big week ahead with golf tournaments, running festivals, music festivals, art gallery openings and more.

Organisers of the Orange Running Festival are expecting more than 2,300 runners out at the Gosling Creek Reserve this weekend, which is the largest number of participants in the festival’s 18-year history. And more than half of those attending are visitors to our city, which is no small financial contribution to the local economy.

The Orange Chamber Music Festival is another event that’s drawing people from all over to the Colour City this week. The four-day festival program begins today and will conclude on Sunday, March 10. Make sure you swing by the South Court this Saturday where you can get a free taste of the festival at Cultured – a full day of music, art and history with events in the museum, gallery, library and forecourt area itself. You will find more on Cultured and all the Orange Chamber Music Festival inside.

Until next week!

Beat to quarters!

Ceremonial Sunset celebrates 123 years of the Royal Australian Navy

Asmall crowd of locals gathered in Robertson Park on Friday evening to witness the rare sight of an ancient maritime tradition being performed on the site of Orange’s now-hidden watercourse Blackmans Swamp Creek.

Touring the region as a part of Navy Week celebrations, the Commanding Officer of HMAS Harman, Commander Glyn Hunter oversaw a “Beat to Quarters” and “Ceremonial Sunset” at the Cenotaph in Robertson Park.

With the sun low in the west, sailors from HMAS Harmon, each bearing rifles, marched into position at the front of the Cenotaph. While the traditional evening hymn played, the sailors fired a volley before lowering the white ensign of the Royal Australian Navy from the flagpoles at the Cenotaph.

The “Beat to Quarters” and “Ceremonial Sunset” are old naval ceremonies that

date back centuries, when the ship’s drums would be beaten as a call for the ship’s company to man the quarters, or action stations.

“It dates back to the days of sail where they would do a beat to quarters and then they would clear their weapons of a night time to be prepared for an evening attack,” explained Commander Hunter.

“And then the white ensign would come down for the evening. So it’s quite a traditional ceremony from the navy of days of sail.”

The crew of HMAS Harmon’s visit to Orange was the final stop on a regional tour as part of Navy Week celebrations. Friday being the anniversary of the Royal Australian Navy’s creation in 1901.

“Today is the Navy’s birthday and we are 123 years old,” Commander Hunter said ahead of Friday’s ceremony.

“When the leadership asked me how I’d like to celebrate this week I decided that it probably be more prudent to get out into the rural areas that don’t get to see navy

very often and just talk about navy, what it is to be in the navy, and why everyone in Australia should know about our navy and their navy.”

During Navy Week, Commander Hunter and the team from HMAS Harmon had visited Cowra, Parkes, Dubbo, and Bathurst before arriving in Orange, stopping to talk to high school students and conducting similar ceremonies to those witnessed in Robertson Park.

...When the leadership asked me how I’d like to celebrate this week I decided that it probably be more prudent to get out into the rural areas that don’t get to see navy very often...

HMAS Harmon, based in Canberra, provided essential communication services for Allied forces deployed in the Pacific region during World War II. Harman also witnessed the establishment of the Women’s Royal Australian Naval Service (WRANS) which was formed in 1941. Today, HMAS Harmon contributes to Joint Force capability through its primary roles of providing administrative support services for personnel in the ACT, southern NSW, and posted overseas. Harman also enables Defence-wide communications, cyber, intelligence, and information warfare capabilities.

Record numbers for 2024 Orange Running Festival

More than 2,300 runners are expected to take part in this weekend’s Orange Running Festival at Gosling Creek Reserve, the largest number of participants in the festival’s 18-year history.

Founded in 2007, the volunteer-run Orange Running Festival has continued to grow year-on-year, drawing runners from all over Australia to compete in events ranging from a two-kilometre fun run to a full marathon.

Speaking with festival coordinator Anthony Daintith earlier this week, he said they had already passed 2,000 entries by midday on Monday and he expected between 2,300–2,400 people

to have signed up by the time the festival gets underway on Saturday, March 9.

“This is the most we’ve ever had,” Anthony said. “Last year was a record — we had 2,100 last year — and we’re going to surpass that again.”

The festival has seen particular growth in the last three years, Anthony said, putting it down to a desire to get outside and keep active after the Covid lockdowns of 2020 and 2021.

“I think there’s an appetite from people to get out and about again. The last three years, coming out of COVID, we’ve increased each year,” he said, adding that their volunteer committee has worked hard to get the word out about the festival.

“We’ve marketed well and I think there’s a lot of word of mouth that we put on a good festival,” Anthony said.

“That gets around and people want to come out to Orange and hopefully spend the weekend out here and just enjoy the region.”

Anthony said more than half of those participating in the Orange Running Festival are visitors to the region.

“It normally works out that 50 to 55 per cent of entrants come from outside the 2800 postcode,” he said.

“So there’s a couple from overseas and, I think we got people from every state and territory in Australia.”

With strong early registrations for the half marathon, festival organisers expanded the event, but it has reached capacity along with the 10k race.

The Orange Running Festival will get underway at Gosling Creek Reserve on Saturday afternoon with 2K Dash events

for women, men, school children and the community.

“We have live music with Megan Woods on Saturday,” Anthony said. “And we’ve got food and drink vendors… So we’re trying to make it a real carnival-type atmosphere across the weekend.”

The marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 5K events will take place on Sunday morning, during which Forest Road will be closed and some other local roads a ected. All roads will be progressively opened throughout the morning and all open by 1pm.

For those wanting to take part in the 2K Dash events the deadline for entry is Friday, March 8 at 4pm. Registrations for the marathon close on Saturday, March 9 at 4pm.

They say a little knowledge goes a long way, but how much do you really know about even the most basic functions of your own body?

Celebrating International Women’s Day, the Nashdale Country Women’s Association (CWA) are hosting a fun and informative event this Friday, March 8, to shine a spotlight on two critical health and wellbeing topics: Bladder and Bones.

As adults, we trust our bladders to just perform without much thought, Nashdale CWA branch president and local urologist, Dr Clair Whelan said.

But how exactly does that happen and how can it go wrong along the way?

“Education is everything when it comes to empowering women and knowledge of this fundamental part of our bodies can be pretty lacking,” Clair explained.

Claire said her presentation will explore everything from why babies are always wet, how toilet training happens and why some kids need longer to train at night, right through to the impacts of every stage of life on our continence and how to ensure “right place, right time” continues for years to come.

“When you think about something

Nashdale CWA is hosting a fun and informative event this Friday, March 8, to shine a spotlight on two critical health and wellbeing topics: Bladder and Bones. Presented by branch president and local urologist, Dr Clair Whelan, the night kicks o at Nashdale Hall from 6.30pm.

like toilet training, we’re all trained by someone who is only as good as the person who trained them. So, we end up inheriting great grandma’s habit of going “just in case” or hovering over the public toilet seat,” Clair said.

Incorrect bladder training and poor habits can lead to a loss of continence in adult life, which is the leading cause of nursing home placements. It also carries a significant societal cost such as limiting opportunities for full-time employment and participation in community activities.

“Bedwetting is another example. I’ve known of people going to chiropractors, naturopaths, trying various punishment techniques… none of which start with the fundamentals of what’s normal bladder function,” Claire said.

“When you consider how important it is to be a continent adult, and how frequently it can go wrong for a range of reasons at any age, you can see why starting with a baseline of what’s ‘normal’ will help.”

Our bones, too, play a key role in

our overall health, from movement to protection of vital organs, Clair said.

But bone health is something else most women give little thought to — until something goes wrong.

“Osteoporosis and fractures carry a significant burden as women age but the time to intervene to prevent that is from our 40s.. actually earlier is even better!” she said.

In her presentation, Claire will cover how our bones develop, things that can go wrong and ways to improve your bone health at any age.

The event, she said, was inspired by an informal chat over wine when many of their members realised how limited their knowledge actually was.

While informative, Bladder and Bones will also be a lot of fun, Claire said, with plenty of good food, good company and drinks available at the bar for cash or card. There will also be ra e tickets available to purchase with prizes provided by Argyle Sa ron, Diesel and Blue Doggy Daycare, Hillside Harvest and local wineries.

The night kicks o at Nashdale Hall from 6.30pm, Friday March 8, with Dr Clair Whelan’s talk beginning at 7pm. Light refreshments will be provided, but bring cash or card for the bar.

Ashlyn’s Galaxy Quest

Orange-born Ashlyn Narayan is looking to achieve two big milestones in 2024: graduating from university and claiming the crown of Miss Galaxy Australia!

A 21-year-old medical science student at the University of Canberra, Ashlyn took her first steps onto the stage of pageantry in 2023 and is now back as a national finalist in this year’s Miss Galaxy Australia quest, which will be held in Sydney, May 1–4.

“It’s always been something I’d been interested in,” Ashlyn said. “Last year was my first time ever doing a pageant — or anything of that sort — but this year, I’m

coming back with a bit more knowledge, a bit more at ease, more confident and excited to give it another go!”

Australia Galaxy Pageants was founded in 2011 with the aim of helping women to become the best version of themselves.

“A lot of people think pageants are… like certain heights and weights, but Australia Galaxy Pageants, they’re really open to who they’re taking. One of the only main requirements is to be an Australian citizenAshlyn explained.

“Any young girls that are interested, I’d definitely recommend looking into it, because it’s so much fun!”

But it’s not all about dressing up and strutting the stage, she said.

“Behind the scenes, we actually have to

do a lot of community work,” Ashlyn said. “Going out into the community, getting donations or volunteering, just helping out wherever you can.

“As well as that, we’re also helping a youth mental health organisation called batyr, they’re really trying to push the idea of breaking the stigma around mental health and actually being able to talk with people to help get through tough times.”

On Saturday, March 16, Ashlyn is holding a fundraising evening for the charity at the CWA Hall in Robertson Park. The night will be a multicultural fashion show with locals showcasing various traditional outfits from around the world.

The $50 ticket price includes dinner and dessert and you are invited to wear your best cultural outfit. Prizes will be given for

the best dressed.

Ashlyn said the night should be fun for all involved.

“Speaking to people from di erent backgrounds, they don’t really get the opportunity to show o their own culture or wear their own traditional clothes often,” she said.

“Sp to put on something small like this, they actually feel really excited. To wear their traditional clothes, be able to mingle with people from their background and make new friends as well. So I think that’s quite important for the community.”

Ashlyn’s Multicultural Fashion Show will be held at the CWA Hall, 135 Byng Street, 6–9pm on Saturday, March 16. Tickets can be purchased from Anita Grocery Store, 97 Glenroi Ave.

Thumbs Up to a small act of kindness…

With a barrage of news headlines showcasing the worst of human behaviour it’s easy to become disillusioned with the state of the world.

But this week, Orange City Life was privileged to play a minor role in facilitating a small act of kindness from some of our readers to another.

On Friday, a reader who wished to remain anonymous, stopped by our o ce with a letter to say how appalled they were to read of a recent incident in the “Thumbs” section of our magazine.

The “Thumbs Down” from an 81-year-old reader (Orange City Life, February 29) reported an incident in which he was harassed by a group of school children while walking down the ramp of the Orange City Centre.

First, one of the boys had hit the man on the head, then one proceeded to spit on him from above before

running o laughing.

“I read with dismay the cowardly attack by spitting on the elderly man,” the note from our anonymous reader read.

“It is a sad indictment on parenting that children are brought up thinking that low-life acts can be tolerated and accepted. Spitting on anybody, especially elderly people, is beyond the pale.”

The anonymous reader then asked Orange City Life to pass on a small gift of a box of chocolates from his family to the man who endured the unpleasant incident “as a sign that there are decent people living in Orange that do not accept this vile behaviour.”

Orange City Life was able to contact the author of the “Thumbs Down” and deliver the gift. Our 81-year-old reader wished to pass on his sincere thanks to those behind the kind gesture.

Will you su er from FORO?

The Fear Of Running Out, that is, running out of money, is a fear many Australians will face in retirement.

It doesn’t have to be this way!

For most Australians, decades of their working lives are focused on buying a home, career and family. And, of course, that is completely understandable. But a little… just a little… focus on superannuation during our working lives can make all the di erence later in life!

Low fees and the right mix of investments

can do a lot of the heavy lifting for you.

However, new research released by the Super Members Council has found around 80 per cent of men and 90 per cent of women have no super left at all when they reach life expectancy age.

Get your super right early on, and time will do a lot of the work in building up your wealth for retirement. Your 50s and 60s is then the perfect time to play a bit of ‘catch up’ and be boosting your retirement savings more when the opportunity arrives to be able to do so.

Yes, we do have a complex retirement savings system. By the same token, it’s also simpler than most people realise. And with some advice, education and guidance along the way, you can utilise our retirement savings system to tax-e ectively build wealth to fund the retirement you deserve.

Debt is also a big factor.

The same research has found more than 40 per cent of workers retire with a mortgage, up from just 16 per cent 20 years ago.

Scarily, around 40 per cent of single retirees, and 33 per cent of couples, will use their entire superannuation balance to pay o debts.

How much you borrow and how long it’s takes to pay o that debt will play a large part in how and when you will be able to retire, and more importantly, whether you will be able to retire with the lifestyle you would hope to be able to live. After all, once you retire, that is when you get to

start ‘full time living’!

In reality, many people miss out on the retirement they deserve due to a lack of planning and a lack of advice. Combine those two things and you can take steps to maximise your lifestyle when it comes time to retire. Use the system we have to your advantage!

In my opinion, the ultimate reward for a lifetime of working is to be able to retire on your own terms.

Are you worried about being able to retire comfortably? Do you know what kind of retirement you are on track for? Are you worried about running out of money in retirement?

Don’t sit back and do nothing! There is so much you can do to get on top of the situation. And if you’re not sure what to do, then why not book a free initial meeting with a local independent financial adviser? It just might be the best financial decision you ever make!

Join us for Open Day at Kinross Wolaroi School on Friday 22 March 2024. Learn all about our Junior School, Senior School and Boarding. We have organised an array of opportunities for you to engage with staff, students and parents. We look forward to showing you around!

Orange Seniors Festival March 11–24

The NSW Seniors Festival gets underway on Monday, March 11, with a range of free activities for seniors taking place all across the state.

The NSW Seniors Festival celebrates the contributions of older people in our community and is the largest of its kind

in the southern hemisphere, with over 500,000 people attending events each year.

This year’s theme is ‘Reach Beyond’ and Orange City Council has put together a program of free events to encourage people to reach beyond their own comfort zones.

“I am glad that our seniors will be able to

enjoy so many activities this year, on top of the events already available in Orange for our seniors each week, and that all the activities are free,” Orange City Council Services Policy Committee Chair, Councillor Mel McDonell said.

“It is important that seniors keep active and stay connected to one another. There are so many ways to ‘Reach Beyond’ this NSW Seniors Festival and there’s something for everyone.”

All the activities o ered during the Seniors Festival are free and fully funded by Orange City Council.

Activities are open to people aged 60 and over, people aged over 50 living with a disability and Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people over 50.

On Monday, March 11, there will be an Indonesian Cooking Demonstration at 2pm at the Seniors Village Hub, 77 Kite Street, where participants will learn new tasty recipes and sample delicious Indonesian cuisine. Phone 6393 8600 to book.

Then on Wednesday, March 13, meet at the main Summer Street entrance of Cook Park at 10am and join in a guided tour to learn more about the history of Orange’s

stunning park and its gardens. Phone 6393 8600 to book.

At 2pm, Wednesday, March 13, the NSW Trustee and Guardian is delivering an Estate Planning for Seniors information session at the Community Services Centre, Giyalang Ganya, 286 Lords Place. Phone 6393 8600 to book.

Head down to the Orange City Library on Thursday, March 14 for a chance to hear from Anne Ring, author of Engaging with Ageing. Ageing is a topic that is often ignored altogether or treated as something wholly negative, but Anne challenges this view with a fresh, new and holistic perspective on growing older. Her research empowers people to actively engage with how they will be old, rather than how old they are. Ann will be speaking at the library from 2–3.30pm. Phone 6393 8132 to book.

From 9am–12 noon on Friday, March 15, the Seniors Village Hub is hosting a Seniors Expo, where you can discover the broad range of local services available to seniors. To see all the Seniors Festival events, visit: www.orange.nsw.gov.au/olderpeople/events

RURAL HEALTH MATTERS

Five Cheap Activities to Get Your Kids Moving

With the rise of digital entertainment, ensuring our kids lead active lifestyles is more important than ever. Engaging in regular physical activity from a young age offers social, emotional, intellectual, and health benefits. It’s recommended that children get at least an hour of physical activity each day, but this doesn’t have to happen all at once. Breaking it down into smaller, manageable chunks throughout the day can make it more achievable and less daunting for both you and your children.

1.

Walk or Ride to School

One of the simplest ways to build physical activity into your children’s daily routine is by encouraging them to walk or ride their bike to school. This not only helps them get their daily exercise but also teaches them valuable lessons about responsibility and independence. If you live too far from the school for a full walk or ride, consider parking a bit further away and walking the rest of the distance.

2. Involve Kids in Activities Around the Home

Household jobs might not sound like fun, but they’re a great way to get kids moving. Activities like gardening, cleaning, and washing the car can be both productive and physically engaging. Turning these chores

into fun, family activities can help kids learn the value of hard work while keeping them active.

3. Ride or Walk Around Your Neighbourhood

Taking a family walk or bike ride around the neighbourhood is another excellent way to stay active. This not only benefits physical health but also strengthens family bonds and creates lasting memories.

4. Playground Adventures

Exploring local playgrounds is another way to increase physical activity and improves strength, fitness, and co-ordination. Bringing along a ball or frisbee can add variety to their play and keep them engaged for longer periods.

5. Explore Your Region

Take advantage of the many available walking and bike tracks in the Central West and Western NSW. These often offer a variety of routes that are perfect for family hikes, providing both exercise and education about the natural world.

TIPS TO REMEMBER

Getting kids moving doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. With a little creativity and planning, you can ensure your children reap the benefits of an active lifestyle without breaking the bank. Additionally, always remember to be sun-safe and traffic-aware when encouraging your kids to do more outside.

Local production team films dancing bees

Recently I had the opportunity to observe the team from local production company Little Image Co working alongside awardwinning artist Zanny Begg, choreographer Larissa McGowan and costume designer Alexi Freeman on the filming of the Dancing with Bees public art project.

Filmed in our Civic Theatre, it was inspiring to see this dynamic creative team in action as they captured the extraordinary footage of local and visiting dancers that will appear on the screens installed on the Civic Centre building on Byng Street. The project is set to launch on the evening of Wednesday, March 27.

Kyle Manning, videographer and photographer at Little Image Co, has a passion for projects that celebrate and elevate the arts in Orange as well as contribute to cultural tourism.

“Zanny Begg is a wonderful artist with great ideas and the result is going to be a beautiful artwork,” he said of the project.

“It was fun and collaborative,” he continued. “Working with the dancers was really special, from our young local dancers through to some of the big names in Australia. They were all so

easy to work with, were really prepared with their choreography, and took direction really well.

“It was brilliant to see the local inclusion, which was a big focus for Zanny. Right from the outset she was determined to work with people from the region as much as possible and we were delighted to be o ered the opportunity to work on the project. It’s great to see local businesses like ours being supported through these arts projects.”

Zanny is looking forward to seeing the images that she created with Kyle and his team come to life later this month.

“They are an incredible team to work with,” she said. “They captured such beautiful footage and were indefatigable in working with me to craft new ways of filming all the dancers.”

Zanny Begg professionally engaged all of the dancers as well as the videography team. She majority-funded the project through grants that she secured from Creative Australia and Create NSW. Additional funding from a NSW Government Arts and Culture Infrastructure Grant awarded to Council for Public Art projects also ensured that the project could be realised.

OFF THE TRACKS PAYS SURPRISE TRIBUTE TO JC AND 4 ON THE 4LOOR

There had been mystery surrounding the O the Tracks line-up at the Victoria Hotel on Saturday, but all was revealed when organisers sprung a surprise tribute night on 4 on the 4loor mainstay John Carter.

For 25 years John had been the driving force behind Orange’s long-running live music institution 4 on the 4loor. After calling it a day in December 2023, the gig was revived by Ben Lander, of Lander’s Music and Esther-rose Parton under a new name: O the Tracks.

In a last-minute surprise, the second O the Tracks show held on Saturday, March 2 was revealed to be a special tribute show for John Carter and his many years of supporting local musicians through 4 on the 4loor.

MORE COMMUNITY CONSULTATION NEEDED ON NEW VEHICLE EFFICIENCY STANDARD

I’m calling for the Federal Government to conduct further consultation, particularly with country communities, on its proposed New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES).

I’m concerned that the views of country drivers and country car dealers, like Ben Davis and Anthony Simmons from John Davis Motors (whom I held a press conference with last week), have not been given enough consideration. Ben runs dealerships in Bathurst and Orange.

WHAT IS THE NVES?

The NVES would enforce a CO2 target on car manufacturers for new vehicles they produce.

To be clear, dealers like Ben Davis are not opposing vehicle efficiency standards. They believe that Australia needs to look at putting a standard in place. The only two developed countries without them are Australia and Russia They’re also not opposing electric vehicles.

LSome of them are great to drive and handle like rocket sleds on rails. Our car dealers want to sell more of them.

WHAT ARE LOCAL CAR DEALERS SAYING?

• Country car dealers would like to see the new vehicle efficiency standard aligned with the availability of models that suit the needs of country drivers in Australia.

•Pricing. Our local car dealers are pointing out that country people could well pay more for larger vehicles because there is no electric vehicle equivalent for them to swap in to.

•To get more country people into electric vehicles, there needs to be a range of models that can drive long distances and that have a strong towing capacity. The technology that would enable vehicles like that to enter the Aussie market just doesn’t exist yet.

• If you’re a farmer, a tradie, or a recreational road user that needs to tow over long distances, unfortunately the technology to

ast week in Parliament MPs Bob Katter and Andrew Wilkie famously dressed as pigs to draw attention to the huge profits Coles and Woolies are making and the need to crack down on supermarket power and price gouging.

As Independents they are putting legislation into Parliament that can cut back the dominance of the major supermarkets and halt their price gouging.

I will be backing the Bill to the hilt when it hits Parliament.

When I used to be in the National Party it frustrated me that on issues like this the Coalition would always talk a big game yet never did anything about it when they were in power. They had nine years!

The time for talk is over.

The National Party and all the major parties need to back our Bill.

produce a fit-for-purpose vehicle that would suit your needs is still a ways down the road. It will come, and when it does that’ll be positive, but it’s just not there at the moment. There also aren’t enough charging stations in country Australia yet.

•Another issue is that the standard that is being proposed matches the one implemented by the US, but without any of the financial incentives that the Americans are offering, like substantial tax credits worth thousands of dollars.

COUNTRY CAR DEALERS AND DRIVERS DESERVE TO BE HEARD

I’m very concerned about the lack of consultation on this proposed change, and the potential impact this new policy may have on country drivers and country car dealers.

Many car manufacturers are still reviewing their positions on the proposal, and the government hasn’t tabled the legislation yet. However, we need to make sure that the rollout of these vehicle efficiency standards, which are needed, happens in a sensible way.

This is what country drivers and country car dealers want, and they deserve to be heard.

WHY IS MY BILL NEEDED?

The decision of the Nationals, the Liberals and Labor to vote against my bill is all the more shocking when recent data reveals that the activities of foreign property speculators have been ramping up big time.

The National Australia Bank Residential Property survey for fourth quarter 2023 found that the market share of foreign buyers in new Australian housing markets grew for the fifth straight quarter to a six and a half year high of 11%.

In New South Wales foreign buyers had a 15% market share.

penalties of up to $250,000 for individuals, and $1.25 million for foreign companies.

With thousands of residential properties bought every year by foreign property speculators, my Bill would immediately help to take some heat out of the property market and make a positive contribution towards easing the housing affordability crisis.

MAJOR PARTIES VOTE AGAINST MY BILL

Last week, I moved to suspend the business of the Parliament so that debate on my Private Members’ Bill would begin and that it would be voted on.

It’s disgraceful that none of the major parties supported it and actively voted against it. Only the Independents backed my Bill.

It exposes the hypocrisy of the major parties who say we need to solve the housing affordability crisis, but then vote against measures that would immediately help hardworking Aussies achieve the Great Australian Dream of home ownership.

It also shows the importance of having Independent Members in Parliament, because none of the major parties had the ticker to back up their words on the housing affordability crisis by supporting my new policy.

I WON’T BE LETTING THIS GO!

I believe that all Aussies should be able to get a shot at the Great Australian Dream.

In these difficult economic times, we need to be putting the interests of Australians ahead of the interests of wealthy foreign property speculators.

“So the paintings I’m going to be showing — the colours really are bright, a lot of the paint is right out of the tube.

“This time, I decided to do birds in as bright colours as I can manage… I’m going to try to take the birds a little bit further than I’ve done before, maybe a little bit more surrealistic,” Hank said.

This approach is somewhat driven by necessity. Hank has been losing sight in his right eye and recently learned he has the same condition left.

Hank will be exhibiting over 20 paintings, oil on canvas, along with soft pastels – a medium has been experimenting with more recently.

PLANT OF THE WEEK

Beautiful show-offs

Naked Lady or Amaryllis belladonna is part of a small genus of plants from the family Amaryllidaceae. They are native to South Africa. They are herbaceous, perennial bulbs and are starting to appear throughout Orange now and will be with us for much of autumn.

They are known as Naked Ladies (or Belladonna lily) because the long lilylike flower stem appears well before the strappy leaves that follow a few weeks later. They make a striking addition to any garden but are probably best-suited to a cottage garden. They also look stunning planted en masse.

Preferring free-draining soil, they are one of the hardiest plants in the garden, being drought, wind and frost tolerant. They will flower in full sun or shade and are a perfect choice for a hot, neglected part of your garden; but do mulch well.

The flowers are long-lasting and come in a range of colours from white through to a deep pink. They make a beautiful cut flower and will also grow well in a pot, not needing too much attention. The flowers have a light, sweet fragrance.

If planting into your garden, the bulb (pointy tip up) should sit a bit proud of the soil. Water well and then let it do its thing. Every two years or so, you can divide the bulb once the plant has died back completely. Replant as soon as possible, giving the new plants a good water and a light application of fertiliser. Keep mulched.

Every part of the plant is toxic to humans, pets and stock so wear gloves when planting or dividing.

Interestingly, whilst the plant is poisonous there is a cocktail called the Belladonna.

You will need:

Belladonna cocktail

1 part dark rum

1 part light rum

1 part orange juice

1 part cranberry juice

1 part pineapple

Shake all together well and serve with ice and a sprig of mint. Perfect on a hot summer’s afternoon!

THE GOOD ENOUGH Parent

Date Night

As all parents will know, date night is the act of squeezing yourself into last year’s special occasion outfit that you bought on sale, venturing out for an Insta-worthy dinner and one of Orange’s cheaper reds, then heading home to try sneak in a little ‘quality time’ as your nine-year-old bangs on your locked bedroom door demanding to be let in to talk to you about Minecraft. Afterwards you both fall asleep in front of the Netflix show you’re rewatching. We call this ‘romance’.

Well, stu it. Raise your glass of cheap wine and say it with me: it’s time to take date night back! I’d just like to pause here and state that my marriage is great. We’ve been together for almost 20 years and the only real low point was when both nectar and French onion soup were on sale so I made apricot chicken three times in one fortnight. Honestly, if we can get through that we can survive anything. We launched our foray into dating on Valentine’s Day, with dinner at the Union Bank. This was a shaky start because we chose their ‘feed me’ option, where you get a set menu of their highlights. It’s a lot of food and I’ve barely eaten since leaving hospital so it was up to hubby to pick up the slack. I was full after the appetiser and, bless him, he managed to fit an extravagant dinner for two into his 72kg frame. Unfortunately, the error of his ways hit him on the drive home and he ended the night moaning in bed while clutching his very full stomach in regretful pain.

get to see her enough so this was an opportunity I wasn’t going to miss. I headed to Tangled to get my hair cut, ignoring Miss Nine’s lovely advice to get a colour done as well because I’m apparently ‘incredibly grey these days’.

I book us in at Union Bank again but vow to make more realistic menu choices this time. I send my best friend a barrage of messages starting with inviting her out and ending with a demand that she stops being busy with work and makes booze plans with me. My last hour at work is spent planning a month of girl’s nights with her. A lovely productive day.

...Well, stu it. Raise your glass of cheap wine and say it with me: it’s time to take date night back! ...

Now, the thing is that I haven’t had a drink for about three years because I was unwell. I’ve recently been cleared to have ‘the occasional drink if you can tolerate it’, so this week I’ve returned to the first love of my life: single malt Scotch whisky. So my sister and bestie each had a classy glass of white wine and I ordered the first of many 12-year-old Glenlivets.

The next week we made vague plans to head out to the pub but I cancelled that immediately when my beautiful sister asked if I was free for a visit. She lives in Wollongong and I don’t

An hour and a half later I literally stumble out the door (restaurants should never have steps), and send hubby a provocative and teasing message about coming to get me. Well… I mean I try to. What he actually receives is an incoherent slurring of words in text form. Autocorrect, you failed me! And, I have to be honest, the scotch also failed me. I headed to bed and winked at him and told him to meet me there in a few minutes. Predictably, he arrived to find me passed out and drooling on his pillow. In conclusion, date night is awesome, my tolerance for alcohol turns out to be two standard drinks and I can’t wait to do it again.

It outlines the actions every bank will take to protect Australian consumers and small businesses and to harden the system against scams,” said Australian Banking Association CEO Anna Bligh.

“The initiatives we launch today are a significant step forward and demonstrate the banking industry’s commitment to fight scams. It doesn’t matter if someone banks with a regional mutual bank or the largest bank

in the country, customers can be confident their bank is working hard to protect their money,” said CustomerOwned Banking Association CEO Mike Lawrence. In addition to a commitment to upgrading the monitoring of specific payment methods, the Scam-Safe Accord includes a major expansion of intelligence sharing across the sector with all banks acting on scams intelligence from the Australian Financial Crimes Exchange by mid2024, and joining the Fraud Reporting Exchange. This means critical information is shared across the banking sector at speed about scam transactions, improving the chances of preventing scams and recovering stolen funds.

“Preventing scammers from taking the hard-earned money of everyday Australians is a shared responsibility. As scammers work hard to devise new ways to steal money, it’s critical that governments, industry and consumers remain vigilant to make Australia a hard target for scammers,” said Mike Lawrence.

“Recent data from banks shows that $600 million in stolen funds has been returned to customers over the last year. To keep up this e ort it is critical that government, banks, telcos, social media and crypto platforms work together as part of an eco-system to stay one step ahead of sophisticated criminal gangs,” Anna Bligh said.

The Scam-Safe Accord initiatives are based on the principles of disrupt, detect and respond. They include the following commitments from banks. The initiatives define a banking sector industry standard following the authorisation, from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission in August for ABA banks to work collectively to develop initiatives to help reduce scams.

DISRUPT

• Banks will deliver an industry-wide confirmation of payee solutions to customers

• Banks will take action to prevent misuse of bank accounts via identity fraud

• Banks will introduce warnings and payment delays to protect customers

DETECT

• Banks will invest in a major expansion of intelligence sharing across the sector

RESPOND

• Banks will limit payments to high-risk channels to protect customers

• Banks will implement an Anti-Scams Strategy

As a leading customer-owned bank, Orange Credit Union is proud to already be working towards these strategies and goals, and provides regular updates across our website and Social Media on the latest scams and fraud, as well as hosting our annual Stay Safe Forum.

The monthly event is about enabling men to connect around some fun, fellowship and sharing of life and faith over a very tasty breakfast, in a wonderful setting.

TO THE EDITOR,

I would like to make a statement about Orange City Council staff.

I phoned their office the other day to ask how I could vote on “The Future Development” of Orange. The survey will take in the next five years.

I phoned the office and informed the woman that I was a ratepayer and had been for over 20 years. I don’t have a car. I have not got a computer, nor a mobile phone so I can’t go onto their survey and vote. Her answer was: “To then walk to the library and they will help me vote.”

I live out on the Forbes Road, not far from Ploughman’s Creek. There must be many older ratepayers in this city, that have paid their rates for years, who are not able to put their ideas forward.

So a big thumbs down to Orange City Council for not thinking of the older ratepayers in our city. Some of us do not own a computer or mobile phone, and transport to the library could be difficult.

Local Public Speaking Contest

The Orange Toastmasters Club will host fellow Area 14 clubs, Bathurst and Dubbo at the OESC on March 10. Local historian and former Toastmaster, Elizabeth Griffin will attend to lend her considerable experience to the event. During her time at Toastmasters, Elizabeth achieved the highest educational award from the international organisation, the Distinguished Toastmaster.

The public are welcome to attend the free event on Sunday from 10am on Level 1 and enjoy listening to club-winning local speakers as they vie to represent the Central West region in Sydney for the next phase of Toastmaster speech competitions. The annual speech contests culminate at the District (national) level, where the best Australian speaker wins an expense paid trip to the USA to represent their country!

No colloquial or foreign words. No capitalised nouns, apostrophes or plural words ending in “s”. Each number corresponds to a letter of the alphabet. Two have been filled in for you, can you work out the rest? Can you find all the words listed? The leftover letters will spell out a secret message. As you read this you are likely witnessing the first leaf-change of autumn in Orange. After a warm summer, I find myself lifted at this time of year, with shorter days, cooler nights and the anticipation of the first fires to warm us. Indeed, the changing leaves signal an imminent change, and we can do nothing to stop it. Unlike us Orangedwellers, there was a man in history who wasn’t ordered around by the changing seasons… he ordered the seasons around!

In one famous ‘Jesus moment’ Mark records a time when Jesus told a fruitless

tree its time was up. The next morning that same tree was as leafless as on a winter’s day. In their astonishment they asked Jesus what it meant and he replied that it should remind them to have faith in God. This all happened a week out from the first Easter. As you see the turning leaves, a few weeks from Easter, why not read Mark’s Gospel, or at least Chapter 11 where this event is recorded, and ask yourself: is it time you considered more seriously the one who is not subject to creation like you and I, but master over it?

A BIG THUMBS UP and thank you to Sandy at Woolies, North Orange, who really went out of her way recently to assist me in finding an item I needed to purchase. Your e cient, friendly and professional cooperation and service were so greatly appreciated and you are indeed a ‘valuable asset’ to Woolies! Thank you so very much and well done!

A BIG THUMBS UP to both Chris and Ali at Specsavers who were both so e cient, friendly, helpful and professional when I had my eyes tested and also when choosing my new glasses which can sometimes take ages! Ali was very informative and knowledgeable and made my selection a very pleasant and speedy process! Thank you both so very much!

THUMBS DOWN to the group trying to stop the Rainbow Festival. It is a free country where we all are allowed to have our own beliefs. The group should follow their Christian beliefs and accept everyone.

THUMBS UP and a great thank you to Andrew Gee and sta for their interest and diligence in fixing a major problem I had with Telstra. Our phone line, home security link, etc, had been cut o for over ten days and Telstra had not been very interested. Thanks again Andrew for achieving a rapid result.

A BIG THUMBS UP to Ursula at Pillow Talk who was very helpful and friendly when assisting me with my recent purchase.

A BIG THUMBS UP to Gary, Jack and the very professional crew from Country Tree Services for their rapid response and the e cient, safe manner in which they conduct themselves. Thanks from Blayney Tourist Park.

HUGE THUMBS DOWN to the mindless individual who threw a glass bottle from a small car in Edward Street. The bottle shattered and pieces of glass almost hit a lady standing at her front gate. I don’t know what you’ve got between your ears, but it’s not brains. This was a totally irresponsible, dangerous, and moronic act. The car was going too fast (as usual) to get a plate number. Grow up, whoever you are!

THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council for neglecting to seal Springbank Lane for over 30 years, resulting in recurring issues like stuck garbage trucks and unsafe road conditions when wet. Urgent attention to improve the road is essential!

GIANT THUMBS DOWN to the low-life poisoning family pets! I hope karma gets you big time in the worst possible way.

THUMBS UP to Matt at the Country Club. Always a welcoming smile and a beer on the bar.

THUMBS UP to the lovely couple observed walking near the old Kelly’s site in Peisley Street on Thursday. They were holding hands. Made me smile and warmed my heart. Thank you for showing your love.

THUMBS UP to Lime and Stone Molong. Great clothing brands, beautiful sta and tasty food.

THUMBS DOWN to junior rugby league that does not let children and families choose the club they wish to play for, and not release players.

THUMBS UP to Uniting Care for all their great service. They assist me and many others with shopping and other outings, all done with care and respect.

THUMBS DOWN to Orange petrol stations. When in Bathurst recently I had to get fuel and noticed that the price was at least 15 to 18 cents cheaper than Orange. They make a living at that price so why can’t Orange do the same?

THUMBS UP to the new bakery in town Hansel and Gretel. Thank you for the great service and so many choices of cake and pies. It was a lovely experience – I will be back.

THUMBS UP to Orange City Council for the Orange cemetery grounds maintenance.

THUMBS UP to Cassie at Highlands Healthcare for her consistent exemplary service. Dr Heinz’s patients are so lucky to have such a caring, responsive, and competent practice manager to support his wonderful obstetric care.

BIG THUMBS DOWN to the rubbish truck that dropped my empty bin on top of my four-year-old street tree and snapped it o .

THUMBS UP to Cooper at the top IGA who was busy filling shelves, but took the time to help me get an item that was too high up for me to reach. Thank you! IGA has the most pleasant sta .

BIG THUMBS DOWN to the dancing bee clock. It’s a waste of money that could be spent on roads and footpaths and within our community. Pull it down.

A HUGETHUMBS UP to Steve from Steve’s Upholstery Bathurst for the amazing way he reupholstered my two loungeroom chairs and made cushions for our kitchen stool which seats four people. I was so thrilled with the results. He is certainly a master of his craft.

THUMBS UP and welcome back to Deb in pathology at Millthorpe. Good to see you back from your accident. You were missed.

THUMBS UP to all the wonderful sta members at Molong Hospital from a very grateful patient that ‘scratched his leg’.

THUMBS DOWN to the four people blocking the path to a barbecue area with their camp chairs. A woman with a wheelchair had to wait for them to move out of the way so she could access the area. There was plenty of room in the covered area so why did they feel the need to sit on the pathway? It was a very busy day. Have more respect for people who need the paths, thank you.

THUMBS UP and a big thank you to Robyn at the Ex-Services’ Club bistro. You always go above and beyond with your customers and you made the night extra special for my wife and I, celebrating our wedding anniversary. Thank you!

THUMBS UP to whoever is responsible for trimming all the low-lying branches along the footpath near the velodrome.
