backyard. Hopefully, the warm weather holds on a little longer as I’m not ready to dig out the jackets and beanies just yet! The family and I have been making the most of these last days of the season enjoying a very pleasurable day of fishing and swimming on Sunday. My 8-year-old even managed to hook himself a three-kilogram Murray Cod for his efforts!

Music lovers are looking forward to a packed and varied four days of music next week with the Orange Chamber Music Festival returning for a fourth year. It’s a small, but growing festival that’s putting Orange on the cultural map and there’s something there for all tastes. You can read more about it inside.

This week we also caught up with Cosmedic Collective business owner Kylie Duncan, who is taking part in the Cancer Council’s Stars of Orange fundraiser. When first asked to do it, Kylie said the thought of dancing in front of a crowd made her feel ill. However, Kylie decided to use this as an opportunity to conquer her fears and is hoping to encourage others to get out and try something new.

And for those of you wondering about the construction work at the old PCYC in Byng Street, we also had a chat with Jane Crowley, or Dirty Jane’s Orange, who gave Orange City Life a sneak peek at the new vintage market taking shape behind the green doors.

Until next week!

“Very humbled”: Paula Townsend named 2024 Local Woman of the Year

Bowen Community Technology Centre’s (CTC) founder and hardworking champion Paula Townsend has been named Orange’s 2024 Local Woman of the Year.

For 17 years, Paula has quietly filled a seemingly small, but vitally important, need in the community; making sure those who need it have free access to computers, internet, and printing and being there to provide a helping hand to local kids and adults.

“It’s one of the best parts of my job as a local member; acknowledging people like Paula who’s done an amazing job here for many, many years,” said Member for Orange Phil Donato, as he presented Paula with her award last week.

“There are lots of people who have opinions about how to tackle big issues in our community, but there are only a few people who are willing to roll up their sleeves and put plans into action – and even fewer still who are willing to sacrifice their time and effort for the betterment of

the community,” he said.

At the CTC, Paula provides a safe and welcoming space for kids and adults, he said, helping with everything from school homework to job applications and more, Mr Donato said.

“The improvement and the difference they have made in so many people’s lives, you know you can’t measure that,” he said.

“Providing this safe-space for kids to come after school. To be able to have a snack, sit at a computer, do some homework, be supervised by Paula and her team… a lot of these kids may not have that at home.

“Helping someone who doesn’t have access to the computer or can’t type to be able to apply for a job and to see that person then get a job — that’s a game changer. That changes lives. I mean, you can’t quantify that but that’s the reality of the situation,” Mr Donato continued.

“She’s left a big mark on this local community and I’m so honoured to be able to present Paula with this award.”

Overwhelmed by the attention, Paula said she felt very humbled to have been given the award considering all the other women

...There are lots of people who have opinions about how to tackle big issues in our community, but there are only a few people who are willing to roll up their sleeves...

who do amazing things in Orange.

“I’m really actually honoured,” said Paula. “There’s so many wonderful women in the community that to be nominated and receive this award… It’s a fantastic feeling to know that people think I do OK work.”

More than a job, the CTC is a real passion for Paula, who has seen many times just how much of a difference it can make for the people who seek her help.

“It feels wonderful to help a person get a job. It feels wonderful to help a person sort out their financial things and we do all of that sort of stuff. It’s the best feeling in the world and I’ve got the greatest position in the world!” said Paula.

I don’t think people realise that not everybody has a computer, not everybody reads, not everybody can write, not everybody can type, some people need that help and that’s what we’re here for.

“I hope it continues in the future long, long after I’ve gone.”

Paula will join Member for Orange Phil Donato at the NSW Women of the Year Awards held on March 4 at the International Convention Centre, Sydney.

IThe festival that’s making Orange a ‘must-visit’ for music lovers

2024 Orange Chamber Music Festival, March 7–10

n the five years since it first launched, the Orange Chamber Music Festival (OCMF) has grown to become one of the premier art music events in regional NSW.

Founded and

curated by local musicians, the notfor-profit OCMF has built a reputation for delivering a diverse world-class program featuring local and international ensembles and artists.

The 2024 festival, March 7–10, will bring together over 60 artists and ensembles from all over Australia, performing at

more than a dozen di erent venues in and around Orange.

It’s an opportunity for music lovers to experience a wide range of performances, from intimate chamber recitals to lively cafe concerts.

“So the goal of this Festival is to showcase Orange as a cultural

destination and show that arts and culture is also very important in this community,” Festival Director Carmen Nieves said.

“In four years, it’s grown a fair amount,” she continued. “We’re getting probably about 80 per cent of our audience come from outside of Orange, from as far as

“There were a few factors that got it across the line,” explains local cosmetic nurse and owner of the Cosmedic Collective Kylie Duncan as to how she came to be one of this year’s ‘Stars of Orange’.

The annual Cancer Council fundraiser Stars of Orange sees a group of business and community leaders spend ten weeks preparing a dance, with the help of local dance instructors, which they then perform at a gala function in May. This year’s goal is to raise $200,000 to support the work of the Cancer Council.

“So one of the previous contestants and my friends must have nominated me,” continues Kylie. “Usually people think that because I can talk under six feet of wet cement that means that it would be natural for me to get up and perform, but the thought of dancing makes me feel ill!”

Kylie’s first reaction was to make excuses and say no, but the mother-of-two says she knew that was taking the easy way out.

“I was turning 40. I wanted to push myself outside my comfort zone. I was literally that day

having a conversation with my kids about the importance of trying something you’re not good at — and I had to put my money where my mouth was,” says Kylie.

Also inspiring her to accept the challenge were thoughts of a close friend who had been undergoing treatment for Cancer.

“I’ve got a really close friend, Danica Bunch, who’s going through a cancer journey,” explains Kylie, unaware that Danica had also agreed to become a ‘Star’ for the Cancer Council.

“I rang her and said, ‘I’m doing this for you, lady!’ And she said, ‘I’m doing it too!’”

The Stars of Orange sees participants paired o with local dance teachers, each learning a di erent style of dance to perform at the gala event.

“They called me and said, ‘You’re fit, right?’ recalls Kylie, who answered in the a rmative without thinking much about it at the time.

“This is the point where I should have realised something was up and they said, ‘Good, you can do the pole dancing!’”

Learning to pole dance was certainly not what Kylie had expected when she agreed to take part in the fundraiser. But after her first class at Revolution Aerial, Kylie says she was hooked and more excited than ever to step up to the challenge.

“It’s gone from being this is a good cause and I’ll do it, to something that is turning into a bit of a passion project,” says Kylie.

“People have lots of judgements about people who take care of their appearance or do pole dancing. So we wanted to create a performance that was first and foremost, empowering and inspiring for other people to ‘have a go’ at something. To not worry about what other people think— that’s probably the biggest message.”

On Saturday, March 9, Kylie is looking for other locals willing to ‘have a go’ at pole dancing to join her at Revolution Aerial for a special fundraising beginners class.

“I know a lot of people have said to me they’ve always wanted to do it, but are too frightened to go and have a try, so this is the perfect opportunity to get some friends and come together and do it!” she says.

...People have lots of judgements about people who take care of their appearance or do pole dancing. So we wanted to create a performance that was first and foremost, empowering and inspiring for other people to ‘have a go’ at something...

“It’s a lot harder than the girls make it look! It’s probably one of the best forms of fitness I’ve done — and I’ve always been active,” says Kylie, who thinks she will continue doing it after Stars has finished.

Pole dancing unfairly carries with it a stigma, says Kylie, with many people simply equating it with stripping. It is something that has resonated with Kylie as there are negative stereotypes she faces about her own industry.

But both pole dancing and the cosmetic industry are focused on helping people feel confident and empowered, she says, and it has given her new motivation for the May performance.

“You get drinks, refreshments, and a lesson with your mates and all the money goes to the Cancer Council.”

Kylie and fellow participant Danica Bunch will also be having a combined Palm Springs-style fundraiser on April 7 at a location to be confirmed.

But more than just raising money for a cause or putting on a good show, Kylie believes being part of the Stars of Orange will change how she approaches challenges and di cult situations in the future.

It’s a lesson she hopes will leave a lasting impact on her and one she hopes will inspire others including her own children.

“I think it’s going to completely shift the way I approach challenges or look at things that might be too hard or too scary,” says Kylie.

“If I’m ever asked to do something challenging I can think to myself I’ve pole danced in front of 600 people!

“It’s a message to the general public, my family, to myself and to the kids that you can do it! Give it a go. Try your best. What’s the worst that can happen? Don’t worry what other people think about you.”

New Zealand and Canberra, which is an emerging market there, and people from Brisbane.

“Nationally, it is very well seen now. We get a lot of reviews from Limelight and ArtsHub came to the festival last year. We had two [government] ministers attending last year. So it’s very well placed for festivals of this style of classical music.”

The footprint of the festival itself has also grown too, from just a handful of venues, the program now includes performances in more than a dozen locations from church halls and wineries to our local library and the Orange Civic Theatre.

But it is not only outside audiences that Carmen hopes to grow. Over the last few years, the OCMF has made a particular e ort to make chamber music and classical music generally more accessible to the public through the free community event, Cultured

Cultured — Saturday, March 9 — is an event that combines music, visual arts, heritage and literature. Held in the city’s Cultural Precinct, Cultured invites people to experience classical music, while interacting with art in the Orange Regional Gallery and the exhibitions of the Orange Regional Museum. It also includes interactive performances in the Orange City Library and the open spaces of the Civic Square.

“Cultured is an o shoot of the festival for the community,” Carmen said. “Basically dedicated to the community and to educate people about music and performing arts as a whole.”

This year’s event will see musicians creating and performing new compositions to reflect on some of the highlights of the

gallery collection.

The NSW Police Brass Ensemble will also be performing a roaming performance through Orange Regional Museum’s Orange 412: A history of our local brigade exhibition.

And in the library, violinist and illustrator Lisa Stewart will be presenting an hour of storytelling, music and imagination.

OCMF treasurer Jay Byrne, who is also performing in the festival with the Nexus Quartet, said Cultured is an opportunity to experience classical music in a less formal setting.

“The idea is that, yes, you can stand and watch the performance, but you can also wander through the gallery while the music is going and enjoy that combination of art and music together,” Jay said.

“So it’s in a much less formal setting which I think is really enticing for the general public…it’s something where they can come get a taste and leave, or stay for the whole day and see a whole bunch of di erent things and experience classical music in a way that it’s not very often done.”

The climax of the OCMF is the Festival Gala on March 9, which brings together a showcase of the best of the festival’s ensembles and soloists at the Orange Civic Theatre.

“We try to showcase as many artists from the festival as possible,” Jay said. “It’s a little taste of all di erent things from soloists to ensembles of 13 people… and there’s nothing in the program that really goes for more than six or seven minutes. So it will be a real showcase and very, very approachable.”

PLANT OF THE WEEK

Add some silver to your life: Teucrium fruticans

Teucrium is in the family of plants known as Lamiaceae. There are about 300 species, of which around 10 or so are native to Australia. Teucrium is not edible.

The most common native Teucrium used in our area is Teucrium fruticans. It is a perennial evergreen shrub that can grow to around 1.4m if left unpruned, with a wide spreading habit. It is often referred to as germander or silver bush due to its beautiful silvery/grey foliage and dainty mauve flowers. From a distance it is often mistaken for lavender.

It prefers full sun and a free-draining alkaline soil. It is fully drought hardy once established but should be occasionally watered deeply during hot summer weather. It is moderately frost tolerant. It is one of the hardiest plants I know of for our region.

It is a perfect hedging plant. If you intend to use it in this way, a hard prune after

flowering will encourage a compact, dense habit. If you want a looser planting, lighter and less frequent pruning is best, and the bonus is that you won’t lose as many flowers. If you’re looking for a formal look, teucrium can be topiarised. It is easy to prune into ball or conical shapes, holding its form down to the ground without becoming leggy. Pruning should be undertaken after flowering. It is also a fantastic plant to create contrast in your garden. Planting it with deep green or lime green plants can look very e ective.

Plant approximately one metre apart, fertilize and water well. Keep an eye on them for the first few weeks until you see signs of growth.

Pittosporum ‘Silver Sheen’, Lavender dentata and Westringia fruticosa ‘Smokey’ are other great silver planting options. Until next week…

Veteran golfers ready for a week on the links

Almost 200 veteran golfers will be descending on the Colour City this Sunday for a full week of golf on Orange and Bathurst courses from March 4–8.

The Central West Week of Golf, formerly known as the City of Orange Veterans Golf Classic, consists of a 54-hole Stableford Handicap played on Orange’s Duntryleague and Wentworth courses, plus a round at the historic Bathurst Golf Club.

The annual tournament celebrates its 27th event this year and the program continues to attract golfers from across NSW, Victoria and Queensland.

“It was one of the first ‘weeks of golf’,” said

organising committee secretary Brian Kellet.

“It was started o by Harold Percival, in conjunction with a really good committee… it’s had a reputation built up by them as the best run, best organised tournaments — people come year after year after year,” Brian continued.

“We’ve got some people who’ve been coming for 20-odd years!”

Even with so many more golf events being put on all across NSW, the 2024 tournament will see more than 190 golfers tee o at Wentworth on Monday, with play continuing at Bathurst on Tuesday and concluding at Duntryleague on Thursday.

The Central West Veterans Golf Classic Champions for 2024 will then be named

at an Award Presentation Dinner Dance at the Orange Ex-Services Club on Thursday evening.

Wednesday is allocated as a rest day, but Friday will see golfers return to Wentworth for a 4BBB Medley Stableford.

It will be a big week for Orange on and o the course, added organising committee treasurer Stan Streatfeild.

“You’ve probably got over 200 people coming into town for a full week,” Stan said. “And it could be a lot more than that really, because you’ve got golfers, you’ve got all their partners and all the rest of it. They all have to stay here for a week and eat for a week and drink for a week. So that’s really great.”

A sneak peek behind the green doors of Dirty Janes Orange

The former PCYC building in Byng Street has been abuzz with activity these past few weeks as renovations ramp up in preparation for the opening of Orange’s new indoor vintage market, Dirty Janes.

Once open, Dirty Janes Orange will house stalls from more than 75 individual sellers, who each

lease a space that they then make their own. Inside will also be a cafe with seating that looks into the main market space

Orange will be the third Dirty Janes location opened by founder Jane Crowley, who originally launched her curated multi-stall market in Bowral 15 years ago, expanding to Canberra in 2020.

The ground level of the Orange market is due to

open this autumn, with the upstairs section to open in about 12 months’ time after the installation of a lift and new stairwell.

“We’ve got about probably six weeks left in the build,” said Jane Crowley as she walked Orange City Life through the renovations in progress.

“The main infrastructure’s up. We’ve got all

of the stand walls up, and all of the electrics have gone in.

“There’s a little bit of finishing o to do there and then in the next couple of weeks, we’ll be putting in all of the fire elements and all of the plumbing is going into the cafe.

“So there’s still quite a lot that needs doing, but it’s great to walk in and actually see the

stands up and ready to go!”

Along with interior renovations, the outside of the building has been transformed with enlarged windows on the street frontage and distinctive green double doors installed in the entryway to the market and cafe.

“The response from stallholders has actually been really overwhelming,” said Jane, who has almost filled all of the 75 available spaces.

“You’ve got such talented people within Orange! We’ve signed up a milliner. I’ve got people who make furniture. I’ve got people who are dealing in textiles. Lots of artists! So we’re giving them a space where they can hang their art and just have that bricks-and-mortar space.

“Furniture dealers…. If you like mid-century, if you like French design, if you like Australian rustic… I’ve got some great dealers who are bringing in old enamel signs and country furniture. I’ve even got some makers who make furniture out of old timbers.

“There’s a second-hand book dealer, a second-hand record dealer. We’ve got vintage clothing and some beautiful vintage jewellery coming in. It’s the whole gamut. I challenge people to come in and not find something that

they’re going to like!”

While the market is somewhat curated by Jane, each stallholder is encouraged to really make their space their own.

“I don’t want to dictate and say, you must have white walls and you must have a rug on the floor, it’s encouraging their personalities just to really shine with what they do,” she said.

And what I’m trying to do is really mix them up so that it’s really curated. You know, I’m never going to put a jewellery dealer next to another jewellery dealer. We want customers to come and have this real sense of surprise and delight!

So when will the green door be open to the public? Jane says she will have a better idea in a few week’s time.

“I reckon by mid-March, I’ll have a really good idea and then we’ll actually announce when we’re opening,” Jane said.

“I don’t want to necessarily do a big party. We’re going to save the big party for later on in the year when we do our ‘Wine Meets Design’ nights. We have them in Bowral and we bring in vineyards and we bring in artists… we’ve had jugglers and trapeze artists and it’s a really fun night where we just bring the community and go, let’s enjoy it by lamplight rather than big overhead lights. It’s great!”

Orange-based fight team Littlefield’s Boxing now boasts three interstate title holders and ambitions are high for future success from locals in the sport.

Battle in the Bush 9, held in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Orange Showgrounds on February 17, saw Dave Littlefield, 18-year-old son Finn Littlefield, and experienced teammate Elodie Minhinick all triumph over the visiting champions.

“It was a pretty special night for us, said Dave, who now holds a Masters Junior Welterweight Interstate Title belt.

“I went down a weight division for this one, so that was a bit of a challenge in itself — just getting the weight down and staying healthy at that weight.

“But to take home three titles in one night — it’s very unusual and something that we’ll remember for a long time.”

For ambitious young fighter, Finn, the win in Orange was rewarding,

“I don’t really care about the wins or losses at this stage, I just want to get experience. My goal for this year was just to get as many fights as I can,” Finn said, before casually adding that he also wouldn’t mind a shot at an Australian title.

“Another goal would be the Australian title as well. To get that this year would be awesome,” he said.

And he might just get a chance if he keeps winning, Dave said, hinting that they might even be able to hold a championship fight here in Orange later in the year.

“He’s heading in that direction, definitely. He’s started o with a great win against a very experienced boxer from Tasmania,” Dave said.

For Elodie Minhinick, claiming a win in Orange and the Female Bantamweight Interstate Title was particularly poignant as Battle in the Bush 9 was her final fight in the ring.

“She’s o cially retired and she just beat the current Australian champion in an

Interstate Title fight, so it doesn’t get any better than that to finish o at the elite level,” Dave said.

Elodie took up boxing as a hobby in 2015 and quickly fell in love with the sport.

But now with a young child and 21 fights to her name, she decided it was time to step back from the ring.

“I wanted to leave on a high and that’s happened…so now I’m going to take a long break and see what’s next,” Elodie said.

“There’s plenty happening this year. The sport’s building pretty well around the area and we’ve got shows in Dubbo and Parkes, Nyngan, Cowra and then we’re gonna finish the year o with a really big show on the 21st of December in Orange,” he said.

“It’s been a good journey, I never thought I would l achieve all this, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity.”

Littlefiled’s Boxing may have lost a champion in Elodie, but Dave said their team only gets stronger, with boxing

Dave said it’s grassroots promotions like Battle in the Bush (which is promoted by his son Jack Littlefield) that is helping to draw more people to the sport.

After each local show, Jack gets more and more inquiries from people looking to learn the “Sweet Science.”

“The local shows obviously create interest and more people want to learn more about it,” Dave said.

“It just gives it the exposure that it deserves.”

Popular chamber music event

‘Cultured’ returns to cultural precinct in 2024

The sounds of chamber music will once again fill the cultural precinct on Saturday 9 March when the Orange Chamber Music Festival’s free community event Cultured returns to the Civic Square.

Cultured will combine music, arts, heritage and literature when musicians from across the country hold a series of performances at Orange Regional Gallery, Orange Regional Museum and Orange City Library, as well as outside in the South Court.

Orange City Council’s Services Policy Committee Chair, Cr Mel McDonell says the free, inclusive and interactive event increases in popularity every year.

YOUR LOCAL COUNCIL AT WORK

“To be able to enjoy classical music by some of the best musicians in the country, right here in our own cultural precinct and completely free of charge is a huge bonus for our community and is something not to be missed,” Cr McDonell said.

The event will begin at the South Court steps at 10am with a performance by the popular NSW Police Brass Ensemble, followed by a roaming performance through Orange Regional Museum’s Orange 412: A history of our local brigade exhibition. This will be followed by an hour of storytelling, music and imagination at 1pm with violinist and illustrator Lisa

Stewart in Orange City Library.

A specially curated program of new compositions and masterpieces will be performed in Orange Regional Gallery from 2.30pm and the Cultured Youth Orchestra of the Central West will perform the grand finale in the South Court from 4pm, conducted by Dr Joanna Drimatis of the Australian Music Centre.

Orange Chamber Music Festival Director and Cultured Curator Carmen Nieves said she was thrilled to be able to present a program of diverse performances for people of all ages.

‘OCMF is delighted to contribute to the city’s diverse and vibrant cultural scene, and I am particularly thrilled to be able to extend this opportunity to regionally based young musicians to perform at Cultured,” Ms Nieves said.

Cultured is part of the fourth annual Orange Chamber Music Festival, which will be held from March 7 to 10, 2024, and is supported by Orange City Council, Create NSW, Orange Regional Arts Foundation and Orange Credit Union.

SENIORS FESTIVAL TO CELEBRATE OLDER PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY

The Seniors Festival in Orange features a range of events.

The Seniors Festival will be held next month to celebrate the contributions of older people in our community.

The festival is the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, with over 500,000 people attending around NSW each year.

In Orange, it will be held from 11 to 24 March with the theme Reach Beyond.

Activities are open to older people aged 60 and over, people aged over 50 living with a disability and Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people over 50.

Orange City Council Services Policy Committee Chair, Cr Mel McDonell said the Seniors Festival was a

highly anticipated event.

“I am glad that our seniors will be able to enjoy so many activities this year, on top of the events already available in Orange for our seniors each week, and that all the activities are free” Cr McDonell said.

“It is important that seniors keep active and stay connected to one another. There are so many ways to Reach Beyond this NSW Seniors Festival and there’s something for everyone.”

All the activities offered during the Seniors Festival are free and fully funded by Orange City Council. Discover the program of events at Orange City Council’s website https://www.orange.nsw.gov.au/

TBhis week in Parliament I continued my push for a two-year ban on the foreign buying of homes and units.

Australia has a housing affordability crisis. We all know it.

Many years ago, every single Australian could expect that at some point in their lives they would have the opportunity to own a home or unit and live the great Australian Dream. That dream is slipping away before our eyes.

TAKING ACTION

That’s why I introduced my first private members bill into Parliament which would ban foreign property speculators from buying homes and units in Australia for two years.

Many countries have already introduced this law, including Canada, New Zealand and Singapore.

In Australia it seems strange that we haven’t also already done this.

In 2021-2022 (during COVID) foreign buyers snapped up:

•4,228 Australian homes and units

•most of these purchases were in the under $1 million price bracket

Since those figures were published, the activities of foreign property speculators have been ramping up big time.

The National Australia Bank’s recent Residential Property Survey found that:

•the market share of foreign buyers in new Australian housing markets in Oct-Dec 2023 grew for the fifth straight quarter to a 6½ year high of 11.0%

• In NSW, foreign buyers had a 15% market share

This points to a near five-fold increase in market share from a

Her project was starting a Pickleball Comp for women aged over 55 in Orange. It’s all about, being active, having fun and trying something new.

Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the world.

On Saturday Belinda organised the first “come and try day” at Orange’s PCYC. I stopped by to say g’day and give my support.

Belinda wasn’t too sure how it would go, but the response was absolutely overwhelming!

90 to 100 women turned up to give it a go!

low of just over 2% during the COVID-pandemic in mid-2021. International agents are reporting an increase in enquires of over 400%.

WHAT IT DELIVERS

We could make thousands of new homes and units available to Australians immediately (without having to take years to build them) by putting a pause on foreign property speculators and giving more Australians their shot at the great Australian dream.

This is not about turning our backs on the world, but it is about putting the interests of Australians struggling to get into the housing market ahead of the interests of cashed up foreign property speculators.

My Bill needs to be passed into law.

So far, there have been seven public hearings in the ‘Parliamentary Inquiry into the Response of Insurers to the Storm and Flood event of November 2022.

I strongly campaigned to get the inquiry up and running, and asked the Prime Minister in Question Time in May 2023 whether he would support establishing the investigation.

PUBLIC HEARINGS –ALLIANZ AUSTRALIA

Earlier this month, I questioned the Managing Director of Allianz Australia, Richard Feledy, about the shocking way the company treated its storm and flood-hit customers in the Central West, and its refusal to publicly apologise to those customers for more than 14 months after the disaster.

Mr GEE: “I noted your apology in your opening remarks to your customers who are not satisfied with Allianz. When you said those words, it left me wondering: why has it taken you so long to make that apology? Why?”

Mr Feledy: “The apologies are made on the individual claims’ basis… in terms of the timing of apologies, we apologise to our customers in the instances where we have got it wrong.”

Later, I said: “The remorse that you

speak of is hardly exhibited in your submission. In your submission, you say, ‘We acknowledge that for some customers we do not meet their expectations of the high standards that we aspire to.’ For example, the events in Eugowra and the Cabonne shire were over a year ago, and it has taken you over a year to make a public apology to the people you’ve hurt during that extraordinary disaster. Why is that?”

Mr Feledy went on to give a long answer which did not answer my question, which I pointed out to him:

“That doesn’t answer the question as to why you’ve taken over 12 months in the case of Eugowra— and then longer with some of those other events—to actually say sorry. That was the question.”

I anticipate that the inquiry will visit the

so that our residents can tell their stories. If you have an

experience from the November 2022 floods that you would like to share, the submissions portal and the online survey remain open.

THE GOOD ENOUGH Parent

Second chances

Monday starts with a mini-vacation for me. Not really, but I had a brain MRI and any busy parent can tell you that 45 minutes of no responsibilities except lying still is pure bliss. I get regular MRIs due to a pesky little tumour in my otherwise incredible brain, but this check-up is due to some new symptoms. I brush any concerns aside and go visit the true heroes at the hospital, the co ee cart baristas. Love you guys.

Unfortunately, the early appointment meant the girls had to walk themselves to school. I coped fine with this… until my 2pm panic attack, when I called the school and checked that she’d made it there. The lovely admin sta reassured me that she’d arrived, and was safe.

a $19 make-up kit at the pharmacy, promising to pay me back with tooth fairy money because she needs it. When we get home, she hands me a $10 note and asks what will happen if she can’t cough up the remaining $9. I explain it’ll be my kit, and she can watch me apply glitter eyeshadow every day. She quickly produces the rest of the money, safe in the knowledge that soon enough it’ll be her canteen ice-block money.

...It’s another reminder that life isn’t fair when a person with a beautiful heart can have it break down, but also just how special life is when you get a second shot at it...

I reacted to this news in the most logical way, by bursting into tears and demanding hubby go to school and check if she was there because she might have been kidnapped and it would mean the kidnappers had a five-hour start and I’ve seen enough Liam Neeson movies to know that’s bad. Hubby did, Miss Nine was fine, and I was forced to admit that maybe I’m a little worried but that it’s OK to cry sometimes.

The rest of the week was a blur of work, after-school activities and Miss Nine cutting herself a fringe while I was at cricket with her sister. Because of course she did. WTF child? I tell her she gets a second chance of scissor ownership, but I’ll confiscate them next time.

Saturday begins with the biggest disappointment of Miss Nine’s life so far: she spotted a TNT courier van and mistakenly thought it was a courier service that delivers TNT. She expressed her bitter disappointment by muttering about false advertising and bugging me until I bought her

In the afternoon Hubby and I leave the kids home alone to see a friend who’s been unwell. It’s another reminder that life isn’t fair when a person with a beautiful heart can have it break down, but also just how special life is when you get a second shot at it. My newfound CWA confidence has me whipping up another perfect caramel slice for them. As I hand it over, I explain that I would have made them dinner, but they’ve been through enough lately.

As we leave, Hubby and I realise we’re alone and we can do anything! Hit the scotch bar, go for a romantic walk, or even see a movie. We go straight home, obviously, and argue about which is the quickest road to take (it’s March St, idiot).

On Sunday Miss 15 goes to a Taylor Swift concert. Not the real one, obviously, but I bought Red and play it in the car and sing while she’s trapped in the passenger seat. She’s so lucky. On the way home I pull up next to my best friend’s hubby and drag-race him home. And win. Suck it, Scott. The rest of the day is spent with a lovely visit with the in-laws ending in a crazily competitive backyard cricket match. Another beautiful week that I’m so grateful to be here for.

Want to learn Belly Dancing?

Have you ever wanted to learn the exotic art of Belly Dance but not known where to start? Here is your opportunity!

Shimmy Sistas Bellydance in partnership with Orange CultureHub and with the support of NSW Club Grants is o ering a free “Come and Try Belly Dance” day this Sunday, March 3.

Hosted by Min Rivers — a belly dance teacher, performer and choreographer with 30 years dance experience – the event aims to connect women of all ages through fun and fitness and by doing so improve physical and mental wellbeing.

“Belly dance is the perfect exercise for women as it was designed by women, for women,” explains Min.

“Belly dance requires no previous dance experience, fitness level or body type. In fact, Belly dance embraces the perfect female shape – ours!”

Belly dance improves posture and strengthens core muscles necessary for healthy alignment, says Min.

It is low impact, but high energy and a great way to reduce stress. It is also a great way to meet other women in a relaxed and safe space and it does not require you to show your belly, ever!

The free “Come and Try Belly Dance” day will be held at the Orange Senior Citizens Hall from 4–5.30pm this Sunday, March 3.

The afternoon will include a performance by Shimmy Sistas Bellydance, a cultural history of belly dance, a belly dance costume parade and a lesson in basic moves and combinations. Tea, co ee and light refreshments will be provided.

For more information, contact Min on 0412 829 377 or email shimmysistas@hotmail.com

An Invitation from the Orange Residents and Ratepayers Association

The Orange Residents and Ratepayers Association (ORRA) invites all residents and ratepayers to attend their monthly meetings.

It is vitally important that councils (being the sole providers of many important and essential services) are held accountable.

This is the purpose of the ORRA and the reason for the necessity of hundreds of similar ratepayer organisations throughout Australia.

COUNCIL MATTERS

In addition to the poorly planned changes to the Lords Place business area between Summer St and Kite St, council also made changes to Lord Place between Summer and Byng streets.

These changes were intended to discourage through tra c in this section of Lords Place, however the result of these changes has been serious tra c congestion along this section of Lords Place.

At peak times the tra c is sometimes banked

THE robus NOTES with Keith Rawsthorne

We’re o to a flying start with a good roll-up for the first meeting in 2024.

President Chuck welcomed all members, visitor John Rae, and guest speaker Elizabeth Gri n. It has been the season for birthdays: John Langford, Tony Reppen, Max Ball, John Southwood, Ted Connors, Knox O’Neal, Bob Willey, Rodney Tonkin and Brian Coyne all celebrated birthdays since our last meeting. Happy birthdays, Fellows!

FINANCE: Treasurer David Cuming presented a detailed report of our financial position, and it’s all good. With all bills for trips, dinners and

sundry expenses paid we finished the year with a small profit which will carry on to future events. Our term deposit is now returning reasonable interest. Our bank will no longer accept cheques so you can now use the EFTPOS machine. Due to rising costs of capitation fees and insurance, the annual membership fee must be raised to $55; still the cheapest club in town. A letter of appreciation will go to OSMC for the excellent dinners they served for combined Probus and the Christmas dinners.

CHANGE OF MEETING DATE: due to requirements at OSMC the May meeting has been brought forward

up right back to the Summer St and Lords Place intersection, with tra c held up on Summer Street unable to turn into Lords Place from either the eastern or western direction.

Vehicles attempting to exit the underground car park onto Lords Place into an unbroken line of tra c are also often backed up into the car parking area itself.

The ORRA have on three previous occasions brought up this tra c issue with council, together with the suggestion that the egress from Lords Place at the Byng Street intersection be restored to the two lanes as was the case prior to council adopting the unsuccessful plans for the Lords Place precinct. This matter will be further discussed at the next ORRA meeting where a motion will be proposed to request council to respond to the previous ORRA representations regarding this important tra c safety issue.

Any resident or ratepayer with suggestions regarding the Lords Place situation or any other issue involving our local government are welcome to attend.

one day to April 30, and November 4 also must move, so we’ll cross that bridge a little closer, but there are options. We will still have plenty of opportunities for the FUN, FELLOWSHIP AND FRIENDSHIP of Probus.

Tour Director John would like your response to three proposals for trips away. 1. A train trip to Stuart Town for lunch 2. One day trip to Temora Air Show. 3. A two- or threeday trip to southern Riverina visiting the towns of Albury, Mulwala and Leeton. These towns all have interesting museums as well as general tourist value.

Probus has signed an agreement with Trade Travel who claim to o er “tours tailor-made for mature travellers.” Give them a call if you feel like a restful tour.

Guest Speaker was the most interesting local historian Elizabeth Gri n who was born at Nyngan,

worked as a jillaroo, then trained as a nurse and midwife, with many years of service in Orange. Elizabeth is passionate about early Orange history, including Banjo Paterson and other notable characters. She is President of U3A (University of the Third Age) in Orange and teaches history there.

Elizabeth’s subject was Orange 1840-1940 supported by a slideshow of old and interesting buildings showing the progress of Orange. She sees people and their habits as being an important part of history, hence her interest in local identities such as Banjo, Dalton, etc.

The next meeting is March 6 with Roxanne Sciverras of Gosling Creek as guest speaker.

My wisdom: “The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of your act.”

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR DREAMS DO COME TRUE?

I’m at a point in my life where I have been ticking o my bucket list. Twenty years ago I wrote a bucket list instead of new year’s resolutions and I’ve spent the last 20 years working through them. Things like travel the world, marry a good man and build a dream house.

In society’s eyes, I guess you would say I’m successful. I’m university-educated, world-travelled and a homeowner. I did indeed marry a kind and loving man and have three wonderful kids.

So according to the formula, I should bounce out of bed every day with a spring in my step and never feel down

or inadequate – things I’ve chased should give me continual happiness, shouldn’t they?

I’m grateful for my blessings but still have down days, bouts of depressive thoughts, and still sometimes feel empty.

Nowhere in The Bible does it say that life experience, wealth and education, equal happiness. My human nature searches for worldly answers to my longing for fulfilment and God holds out his hand and says, “It was never about achieving, it is all about seeking...”

FROM FLOUR MILL TO POTATO BAGGING FACTORY

The historic flour mill at Millthorpe, which closed down in 1960, was given a new lease of life in January 1963 when it was reopened as a potato washing and bagging factory. At that time the potato was one of the Millthorpe district’s most important crops. The photo shows Masters Produce manager Mr A Masters, testing the machinery, which was made by Mid-Western Engineering in Blayney.

THUMBS UP and a big thanks to Will and his Border Collie “Bailey”. They helped me when my car broke down and he needed to push me off the road last Thursday. Such a lovely guy who was so helpful and kind.

THUMBS UP to the student baristas at Anson Street School. Wonderful coffee and the best service! Thank You!

THUMBS DOWN to the group of four schoolboys who passed me walking down the ramp to the underground car park at the Orange City Centre on Monday, January 29. As we passed, one of the boys hit me on the head, and then they all ran further up the ramp, laughing. When they were in a position above me, one of them lent over and spat on my head. Whilst I am not fragile, I am 81 years old and not fit enough to chase and remonstrate with them. Although I wasn’t hurt in a significant way this was a very unpleasant experience and I think other elderly people should be wary of walking anywhere on their own in similar places. I reported the incident to the centre management and police.

BIG THUMBS UP and thank you to all the staff at the Orange Telstra Shop. I went to them with a problem with my laptop that, after phoning Telstra three times, got me no result. The Orange staff, though, kept at it until the problem was solved and I could access my computer again. I am very grateful and appreciate that they were so professional and did not make me feel useless. Thanks again, keep up the good work.

THUMBS DOWN to the impatient driver of a little white car coming from the Cadia Mine. That person sat on my bumper trying to make me go faster, when just up the road is an80km/h limit. Then, when I turned off at Gosling Creek they tooted the horn at me! As a local, I’m sick of this behaviour and should be able to exit my driveway safely after checking the all clear. I shouldn’t have someone powering up behind me, trying to bully me into going faster than is safe, just because they want to get home in a hurry.

THUMBS UP to Tim and his team at North Orange Discount Pharmacy for their professional service and helpful advice.

THUMBS DOWN to the school that every day for the past two weeks has been constantly playing “Tay Tay” as the school bell. Neighbours are over it!

BIG THUMBS UP to the Orange City Centre for finally getting the escalators fixed after all this time.

HUGE THUMBS UP to Griffo for returning all the forks to the staffroom! You’ve made my day. Absolute legend.

THUMBS UP to Orange City ( with a salute to Banjo and a heartfelt thank you to the people of Orange who create such a special place)

THUMBS UP to Orange City ... Where magpies walk, people smile and talk Where old growth trees and gardens grace; Streets and open space. The blessing and joy they bring; Simple and calming No small thing.

THUMBS UP to Mayor Jason Hamling, Orange City Council and all involved in the upgrades to Lake Canobolas. It’s looking beautiful!

THUMBS DOWN to people who speed down the main street, whether they can see the signs or not.

A BIG THUMBS UP to the parents, staff and kids of Manildra and Stuart Town Public Schools who hosted the Orange Canobolas Country Motorcycle Rally for morning tea and lunch on Saturday, February 17. It was obvious that everyone worked very hard to put on a great morning tea and very nice lunch!

THUMBS UP to Byrne Farm on the Cargo Road and the Caitlan for making our recent wine-tasting experience so enjoyable. The relaxed and pleasant atmosphere makes it the perfect place to spend time with family and friends.

THUMBS UP and a huge thanks to John deRooy from Washington & Co, who helped me when I had car issues. He took over an hour in the heat to rectify and support me while I was in distress.

THUMBS UP and thank you to JAX Tyres and Auto. My heroes again! You have made my day with your great customer service, kindness and help when I was in need — all with a great attitude. I will be recommending your business ongoing.

THUMBS UP and thank you to my beautiful friend May, for playing me lovely hymms. You brought back treasured memories of mine with my late husband, making my day.

As summertime draws to a close the various summer sports also begin to wrap up. It won’t be long until the bleak mid-winter mornings are filled with parents standing on the sidelines like icicles whilst kids chase a ball around a field. For us, this time of the year means it is getting to the pointy end of the softball season. Our C-grade team never had any real shot at making the finals, but we were in with a sni last week. Coming into the game, we realised that if we won this game, we would jump up into the top four. Throughout the season, we have tried our hardest to make sure that above all else, we want to have fun. It is amazing how a pressure situation can throw that out the window. Who would have thought that C-grade softball could be so competitive?

Although we started strong, we crashed out in spectacular fashion. We were soundly beaten by a better team. We still have one more game to play, but it certainly has an anticlimactic feel about it. Regardless of the results of the game and where we finish on the competition ladder, the thing that I am going to miss most about this season is the people. I have had such a fun time with each of the players on the team. It has been so much fun to share the laughs, dropped catches, spectacular fails, and the odd glimpses of brilliance with each of my teammates. This is what I will miss most. As this season draws to a close it has made me a little reminiscent.

Maybe it’s just me, or maybe you are the same. When seasons close, we take time to look back and remember the highs and lows of all we’ve faced. But is there a constant amid change? In these seasons of change I often reflect on a verse from Hebrews 13:8 in The Bible which says: ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.’ There is something so incredibly grounding in this statement. That no matter what happens or lies ahead, there remains a constant that I can keep coming back to. In fact, this constant is like a point of reference or a place of grounding when everything around me seems to be changing. But it is far more than a simple piece of information. It is a certain truth that, for me, gives hope and peace no matter what. For even though seasons change, God doesn’t. Even though situations may not go the way I had hoped, God remains in control. Perhaps you find yourself in a season of change and you are looking for something solid to hold onto? As you search, maybe you can look to the one who doesn’t change. Who is described in another part of The Bible as an anchor for your soul. So, even though one season draws to an end and the softball glove will be cast into the cupboard for another season, I am thankful that there is a certain hope that I can rely on.
