OF ORANGE

While we will never knock back a long weekend here at OC Life, losing a day certainly does add a little pressure to our weekly deadline schedule. I did find myself working for parts of the weekend and was very pleased to be in Cook Park for the announcement of the Australia Day Awards, with our own Helen McAnulty, of ‘History Talking’ named Citizen of the Year along with the tireless Huntington’s Disease advocate Rachael Brooking. Both are very deserving winners of the honour. It must be a tough job for the award committee to choose as there were many other deserving nominees including our former recipe and ‘Home Cooking’ column contributor, Ruben Lopez Mesa. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees.

I found myself working again on Saturday, as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese decided to drop by for the sod-turning ceremony for the new $33.5 million conservatorium and planetarium. It looks like it’s going to be an impressive facility and it’s the result of a lot of hard work by a lot of different people over many years. It’s sure to become a real asset for the community.

“Dreams can come true”

Work begins on new $33.5 million Conservatorium and Planetarium

W

ork on the new $33.5 million Orange Regional Conservatorium and Planetarium is now officially underway, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese flying into Orange on Saturday, January 27, for the official sod-turning ceremony. Mr Albanese was joined at the ceremony by Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister, Catherine King, along with Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee, State Member for Orange Phil Donato and NSW MLC Stephen Lawrence. A new built-for-purpose facility has long been a dream for Orange Conservatorium staff and Mr Albaneses said the project “will deliver a world-class cultural hub for the region.” “This conservatorium and planetarium will transform this extraordinary centre that you have built here, this cultural precinct, that is vital for ensuring that people in this great

regional city have the same access to culture and arts and music and learning that people in the city of Sydney or Canberra have,” Mr Albanese said, adding that it will play a vital role in the future economic growth of the region. “It will bring people to this region. We need to ensure that our regional cities grow both as an economic policy in itself, but also to take pressure off the big east coast capitals,” he said. “It makes sense to have regional economic development and in order to do that you need to ensure, not just jobs and economic activity, you need to ensure as well that the cultural life of a city such as this… and other communities in the central west can continue to grow into the future.” Construction fences had been erected and preliminary earthworks begun at the site in the North Court, on the corner of March and Peisley streets, in the week before the Prime Minister’s visit. The project includes the construction of a

275-seat auditorium, a 65-seat planetarium auditorium, 40 practice studios and rehearsal spaces, along with front and back-of-house facilities, office space and amenities.

needs of our growing city,” he said, going on to acknowledge the many previous mayors, councillors and council staff that helped make the project a reality.

The $33.5 million project is funded by $10 million from the Australian Government, $5 million from the NSW Government’s Creative Capital Funding program and up to $18.5 million from Orange City Council.

Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee said the Prime Minister’s presence at the sod-turning reflects the “significance and importance” of the project.

At its peak, there will be 50-60 people working on the site and between 500 to 700 individuals will be working on the project at different times over the 18-month construction period.

...Mr Albaneses said the project “will deliver a world-class cultural hub for the region.”...

Orange Mayor, Jason Hamling said he was delighted to see the work get underway. “Orange is a growing city. Orange City is building new sporting infrastructure fields out on the road to the airport worth over 60 million dollars, for generations to stay fit and active, but we also must be providing the cultural, growing cultural and education

4 ORANGE CITY LIFE | FEBRUARY 1 — 7, 2024

“The $10 million came about as an election commitment that I made in the lead-up to the 2019 federal election,” Mr Gee said “There were many sceptics at the time and many people said that this dream would never become a reality. That money would never be delivered. but I think the naysayers and the sceptics… their doubts have been put to rest.

“This new conservatory and planetarium will be a true gem of regional Australia and it will showcase the can-do power of country communities. I congratulate all community members who’ve worked so hard to bring us to this day. And can I thank you all for proving that dreams can come true!”

“They have no role in Australia” PM condemns neo-Nazis at post-Australia Day door stop in Orange Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressing the media on his post-Australia Day visit to Orange

A

ustralian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has condemned the actions of balaclava-clad neo-Nazis who were stopped by police on a Sydney train on Australia Day.

Following the official groundbreaking ceremony for the $33.5 million Orange Regional Conservatorium and Planetarium on Saturday morning, January 27, the Prime Minister told journalists that he was horrified by images he saw of the group on the previous day. “They have no role in Australia,” Mr Albanese said. “I don’t want to see people in balaclavas, dressed in black from head to toe, who are engaging neo-Nazi activity

...There is nothing to be got in this country through hatred...

in this country. It has no place and it is rightly being condemned by all decent people.” Mr Albanese congratulated NSW on their quick response to dispel what could have been a “very dangerous activity indeed”. He said promoting hatred and promoting division is not the Australian way, urging people to look at what unites us rather than what divides us. “There is nothing to be got in this country through hatred,” Mr Albanese said. “What we need is to embrace the wonderful multicultural community that we have here in Australia. That starts with the great privilege that we have of sharing this continent with the oldest, continuous

culture on Earth and continues through those people who come to Australia, whether it be past generations or current migrants who’ve come here to enrich us with the diversity that makes us the greatest country on Earth. “We need to look always for unity, for hope. for optimism, not hatred and fear. And that is something that will drive my political activity.”

Community LiFE Community Group of the Year: Ragamuffins Playgroup was named Community Group of the Year, for providing a place for friendship and support for new parents and children, at minimal cost, at what can be a challenging time in their lives.

Young Citizen of the Year: Eight-yearold Henley Morris was awarded Young Citizen of the Year for his efforts in raising almost $5000 for the Cancer Council through the Longest Day of Golf Challenge in December last year.

Environmental Citizen of the Year: Passionate environmental advocate Nick King received the Environmental Citizen of the Year Award for his years of dedication to preserving and caring for the environment, including his contribution to numerous local environmental groups.

T

wo Orange women have been recognised for their dedication to two very different causes at this year’s Orange Australia Day Awards.

Rachael Brooking and Helen McAnulty were named cowinners of the Citizen of the Year honours at the community celebrations in Cook Park on Australia Day. Rachael has spent years working tirelessly to raise money for research and awareness of Huntington’s Disease, a genetic neurodegenerative disorder that progressively turns off a person’s ability to think, plan, speak, swallow, and walk.

Local Legend: The Local Legend award was given to Tony Cardwell, who has been a valued and well-loved member of the community for many years through his support of numerous local sporting clubs and his unwavering encouragement of sportsmanship and love for the game.

“The fact that I walked away without inheriting Huntington’s disease is a pretty amazing gift. My mum and my brother just had to ride this really, really long, hard journey for most of their lives and so I had to do something,” Rachel said. “We’re not going to get anywhere if we don’t raise the profile of Huntington’s disease. I want it to be talked about like motor neurons, Like Parkinson’s, like Alzheimer’s, it’s actually the head of all those three degenerative motor diseases, and there’s still no advocacy and still no specialist support and still no funding.”

Rachael lost her own mother to the disease, which is highly inheritable and has no cure. Rachael said she was humbled to have been nominated for the award and happy to have any chance to raise awareness of Huntington’s Disease and advocate for better support.

In the decades since, in towns across NSW, Helen has diligently continued recording stories of the past with her Oral History group and writing them up for publication.

the committee members were split on the decision of who to award the top gong, so they decided to honour both women. “I’m so pleased that we are able to give this award to two very deserving recipients and recognise their commitment to the community this Australia Day, and give our congratulations to all the winners,” Mr Chisholm said.

Helen McAnulty is a name that should be well known to Orange City Life readers as she has been a regular contributor to these pages for many years. HISTORYTALKING

with HELEN MCANULTY

Aspirations

T

“We create our tomorrows by what we dream today.” his philosophical thought was displayed in a coffee shop I visited recently, and the idea was pursued further by the original Oral History Group some time ago when we discussed the ambitions we had when young and whether our dreams had materialised.

Post-war Australia in the late 1940s and 1950s was a time of resettlement and a desire for a continuation of a calmer, safer life after the turmoil of World War 2. The men returning from war had to be absorbed into the workforce and most women who had held down jobs returned to domestic duties. There was also a different attitude to education emerging. The horizons of many returned men had broadened and the Commonwealth Reconstruction Training Scheme gave many an opportunity to further their education. Many, who had never considered tertiary education, now were able to attend university and gain degrees in areas which, before the war, would have been quite out of their reach. As one of our group said: “Just to get a job was all you wanted in and just after the Depression.” This didn’t stop us dreaming though, and Rosemary thought she would like to become a ballet dancer… which didn’t happen. Some of our group did achieve what they had always really wanted. “I knew quite early that I wanted to become a nurse,” said Joan. “No one influenced me although my sister, who was five years older, was not allowed by our parents because at that time nursing wasn’t considered socially acceptable.” Rosemary agreed: “When my early ambition of ballet dancing came to nothing I began nursing in a country hospital in South Australia although nurses did have a reputation of having loose morals. Matrons became very strict later and standards were very high.” Before university fees were abolished by the Whitlam government in 1974, higher education was generally restricted to people who could afford it. As well, the attitude to the education of women in those

days was quite different. It was expected that when a woman married and had children she would automatically leave the work force and stay home. It is not surprising that the dreams of girls to go into professions were very likely to come to nothing as it was considered by many parents that higher education for a girl was a waste of time and the money could much better be spent on her brothers who would spend their lives in the workforce. As a consequence, almost the only occupations girls were encouraged to follow were those where scholarships were offered, like teaching. Nursing was also a popular choice because trainees were given full board and lodging. “I had always wanted to be a teacher,” said Elma, “probably because I had so much respect for the teacher I had as a child, and I enjoyed every minute of it.” Leslye, who grew up in Moree, told us feelingly, “My only ambition was to get out of the place so I went nursing and lasted six weeks before coming back home. I had a series of jobs — legal secretary, police force and finally became an enrolled nurse.” Obviously it was different for the men in our group but, as John pointed out, we were taught the work ethic and if we trained for a certain job we were expected to remain in it for the rest of our lives. “I had no idea of what I wanted to do but when I was about 14 I developed an interest in wildlife and realised that the responsibility of the land rested on the landholders so I went to agriculture college and later worked for the Department of Primary Industries which I thoroughly enjoyed.” Tim’s future was more or less assured by his childhood growing up on a property and the only thing he ever wanted to do was to be on the land. “I joined a stock agent and worked in the back-country managing properties. You only went to town every three months and had to become proficient in all sorts of things because you were so far from help.

Congratulations Helen McAnulty! Orange City Life would like to extend a special congratulations to 2024 Citizen of the Year Helen McAnulty whose ‘History Talking’ column is a much-loved feature of our publication. For nearly 50 years, in towns across NSW, Helen has diligently recorded stories of the past, with a particular focus on the everyday, rather than politics or national incidents. Adding colour and vibrancy to the dry facts of history is how she puts it, and we are grateful for all her colourful additions to our little magazine. We are delighted to see Helen recognised for all her work, which we believe is an important contribution to not only our readers, but historians of the future. Congratulations again! was no possibility of that. Still I learned a lot on the job doing the work I wanted to do.” “My father had a garage and I was in a workshop surrounded by motors from a very early age so I really wanted only to work with anything that had a motor,” Dick told us. “In our day you did what was available and you did it for the rest of your life. I was also interested in flying and became an instructor.” Stuart, like all of us, went into a career that was available at the time and he was in the public service with the Dept. of Public Works and, “I ended up in industrial relations. I have no regrets as you did what was offered at the time and stuck with it.” Pat’s early dream was to be a hairdresser but settled for retailing as did Bronwyn, while Monica – who had Italian and French parents – was very interested in food preparation. Always in our discussions is the realisation that although we compare the way we used to live with the way the world is today, we understand that the needs of the community have changed enormously with the advent of the microchip and the advance of technology.

“When we did go to town we would get in touch with the local hospital matron and enquire if any of the nurses would like to go out. It was all above-board and very respectable, but was a great source of company for lonely young men.”

While our choice of career did not always follow our dreams and our lives would seem incredibly boring to the younger generation, in many ways we were fortunate that we didn’t have to make the difficult decisions faced by people today.

Reg was also a bushman who grew up in the war years and worked with horses. “My ambition was to be a vet but there

We knew the path we had to tread and we didn’t seem to have deviated much along the way.

ART REVIEW

By Bradley Hammond, Orange Regional Gallery Director

Vale Jim Cobb The City of Orange lost one of its great benefactors with the recent passing of Jim Cobb.

Cummings, Emily Kame Kngwarreye, John R Walker, Euan Macleod, Idris Murphy, John Peart and others. Jim’s gift added a significant new chapter to Orange Regional Gallery’s collection of Australian modern and contemporary paintings.

Jim’s vision and generosity will always be integral to the story of Orange Regional Gallery and to Orange. In keeping with his wish that the public should have access to high-quality original artworks, Jim donated 35 remarkable paintings, known as the Chroma Collection, to the gallery in February, 2013. As with the Mary Turner Collection, the cultural significance and value of these artworks grows steadily with each passing year. Highlights of the Chroma Collection include major paintings by Elisabeth

This was just one example of Jim’s philanthropic way of participating in the art world – a quality which endeared him to artists, teachers and gallery owners. He supported the careers of many artists over the years by actively collecting their work and providing them with bespoke art materials. He established one of the world’s leading brands of acrylic artists’ paints, Chromacryl, and regularly worked in the paint factory in Mt. Kuring-Gai until well into his eighties with

with EMILY THOMPSON

I

Wine pairings for back-to-school week

f, like me, you are excited to send the kids back to school while also dreading the daily struggle of lunch/homework/after-school activities/brushing their teeth and hair every morning, I have the guide for you.

Presenting: How to match local wines with common “first week back” events. Situation: In a desperate bid to do something as a family, and not have your nine-year-old write, “What I did in the holidays was play iPad and eat pizza shapes”, you take the family on a fun walk around the lake. About 1/3 of the way around your 15-year-old points out that they’re in much better shape than you, your nine-year-old commences 23 minutes of non-stop complaining and you realise you need to pee because of middle aged bladder weakness. Wine pairing: Never fear! Nashdale Lane Wines is right around the corner! Pick up a 2022 Tempranillo and let the fruity notes of plum and sour cherries soothe your soul, while also reminding you to pick up fruit on the way home. Situation: At breakfast, the day before

school starts, your 15-year-old announces that she needs new school shoes. You stare at her incredulously before reminding her you had a conversation last week where you specifically asked if they needed anything for school. She shrugs, indifferently, and lets you know she’d prefer Adidas. Wine pairing: While experience has taught me it’s never too early to pull a cork out of a bottle, in this situation I’d actually recommend skipping wine and simply boozing up your coffee! Not only is it more efficient for time-poor parents, but that creamy burst of Baileys will bring back fond memories of boozy cheesecakes and fancy dinner parties you no longer have the energy to attend. Situation: You accidentally scroll through Instagram and come across the dreaded #perfectparents and their #perfectlunchbox pics. In a moment of weakness, you search up “organic high protein muesli bar recipe”, followed by “normal healthy muesli bar recipe” before landing on “easy lunch box snacks for lazy parents”. As you add the ingredients required for bliss balls you notice that Uncle Tobys yoghurt coated strawberry muesli bars are half-price this

week and buy those instead.

Wine pairing: Look, I’m all for supporting local wineries. But while you’re on the Woollies website I recommend adding a couple of bottles of Jacob’s Creek $10 Sauvignon Blanc to have on hand for moments like this. Soak the labels off and replace with custom labels created in Microsoft Paint if serving to guests.

Wine pairing: Easily solved! Pop on down to Angullong and pick up two bottles of Angallong 2021 Merlot. Drink one yourself, and gift the other to the teacher the following morning combined with a decent coffee. The smoothness of the red, combined with the smoothness of your swift apology will ease the tension between you two. Situation: You bow to pressure and join the P&C due to low self-esteem and a misplaced desperate need to please people. Wine pairing: Aisles 3–17 of Dan Murphy’s.

...While experience has taught me it’s never too early to pull a cork out of a bottle, in this situation I’d actually recommend skipping wine... Situation: On the first day of school, you realise at 9.18am while watching the class allocations that your nine-year-old’s teacher for the year is the brunette in the Mazda CX9 who cut you off 23 minutes earlier, forcing you to yell out your window “where did you learn to drive, @*#&head”.

Situation: On the first day back you kick the last kid out of the car and experience glorious freedom for the first time in six weeks. Wine pairing: Resist the urge to simply keep driving until you reach the coast, never to return to the mundanity of your life, and head out to Printhie. Grab a bottle of Printhie Swift Cuvée and celebrate in style! *This is not a sponsored post, although I am incredibly open to sponsorship deals from wineries, chocolate factories and noise cancelling headphones manufacturers.

Having a straight forward, legally valid and up to date Will is the best way to help ensure that your assets are distributed to your loved ones according to your wishes. Despite promising certain family members particular assets such as your house or shares when you die, that doesn’t mean anything if you haven’t formalised it in a Will. If you die without a Will, that is known as dying intestate and your assets would be distributed to certain people according to a formula set out by the Succession Act 2006 (NSW). This distribution becomes complicated if you have a blended family, such as children from a previous marriage or a new partner whilst still being legally married to your ex-spouse.

George Blackwell

Therefore it is much better for all involved if you have a Will which clearly sets out your intentions taking into account your family structure, rather than unintentionally excluding someone because they are not an ‘eligible person’ according to the intestate formula. You may already have a Will in place, but keep in mind it is important to do a regular review to make sure it is still current and in line with your wishes. We know that the thought of preparing your estate planning documents can be overwhelming, but it is one of the best things you can do for your loved ones so they have one less thing to worry about during what will be a very difficult time.

ustralia Day is an opportunity to celebrate how lucky we are to be Australian. From our freedom and prosperity, to our mateship and Aussie spirit, as Australians we have so much to be grateful for. Australia Day celebrations include welcoming new citizens who make their pledge to the green and gold, and celebrating exceptional residents who go above and beyond to make their corner of Australia the very best it can be. They personify service above self, and help build the future of our villages, towns, cities and also our country. While I couldn’t get to every Australia Day event, this year I attended celebrations at Orange, Yeoval, Bathurst, Oberon, and Portland.

R

hubarb grows in profusion during summer and early autumn in Orange, although the first frost will knock it for six and it will then die back and become dormant.

From the plant family Polygonaceae, it is an herbaceous perennial that grows from short, fleshy rhizomes. It is easily propagated when the parent plant starts dying back by dividing the clump (keeping some rhizome and a crown bud) and replanting at least a metre apart. Keep well-watered and fertilised. Protect from frost. Better still, if you can, let them spend winter in pots in a greenhouse. Some varieties of rhubarb have beautiful ruby red stems. Others have green stems which are just as delicious as the red varieties. You’ll find enormous bunches in your local greengrocer now and, if you’re lucky enough to have some planted in your garden, harvest it to your heart’s content as regular harvesting encourages new growth. If you don’t like eating rhubarb, the plant still makes a good contrast plant in your garden.

PLANT OF THE WEEK

Ruby wonders

For the rhubarb lovers amongst you, here’s a recipe that will last for months in the fridge and makes a perfect gift.

SPICY RHUBARB AND DATE CHUTNEY RECIPE A gooey mass of goodness, this chutney is perfect with any meats, cheeses or terrines. The recipe was given to me by a friend who, in turn, had been given it by a wonderful woman who lived in the Crookwell district for many years. Sadly, she’s no longer with us but her recipe lives on. It probably dates from the 1930s. You will need: 700g rhubarb (leaves and base discarded*), chopped roughly

mustard seeds. You could add a teaspoon of chilli flakes for extra punch if you like.

700g brown onions, finely chopped

6 cups white sugar

Put all into a large pot and simmer for around an hour, or until completely softened and thickened. The resultant gooey goodness is quite spicy but utterly delicious.

1 tbsp salt

Let cool slightly and pour into sterilised jars.

830ml white vinegar

Yields approx. 6-8 medium-sized jars.

1 heaped tsp of cayenne, ground ginger, curry powder, ground cinnamon, mixed spice and

*Only the stems are edible. The leaves and roots are toxic to humans and your pets/stock.

450g pitted dates, roughly chopped

TWO RECIPIENTS NAMED CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AT ORANGE AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONS s

Citizens of the Year Helen McAnulty and Rachael Brooking. Two Orange women have been recognised for their dedication to two very different causes in this year’s Orange Australia Day Awards.

Orange Mayor Jason Hamling congratulated Rachael and Helen and all the winners and nominees for the 2024 Australia Day Awards.

Rachael Brooking and Helen McAnulty were both awarded Citizen of the Year at this morning’s Australia Day celebrations in Cook Park.

“These awards show that Orange is full of wonderfully giving people who make a positive difference to our community and I’m proud to acknowledge their contribution. I give my congratulations and thanks to all the winners here today, they are an inspiration to our community,” Cr Hamling said.

Rachael works tirelessly to raise money for research and awareness into Huntington’s Disease, as well as running a support group for Central West families affected by the disease. Helen has spent decades recording the memories and history of people in our community through the ‘History Talking’ group and publishing a newspaper column for many years.

this award to two very deserving recipients and recognise their commitment to the community this Australia Day, and give our congratulations to all the winners,” Mr Chisholm said.

King received the Environmental Citizen of the Year Award for his years of dedication to preserving and caring for the environment, including his contribution to numerous local environmental groups.

Eight-year-old Henley Morris was awarded Young Citizen of the Year for his efforts in raising almost $5000 for the Cancer Council through the Longest Day of Golf challenge in December last year.

Community Group of the Year was awarded to the Ragamuffins Playgroup, which provides friendship and support for new parents and children for minimal cost at what can be a challenging time in their lives.

Orange Australia Day Community Committee chairperson Matthew Chisholm said the committee members were split on the decision of who to award the top gong, so they decided to honour both women.

The Local Legend award was given to Tony Cardwell, who has been a valued and wellloved member of the community for many years through his support of numerous local sporting clubs and his unwavering encouragement of sportsmanship and love for the game.

Community Event of the Year was won by Kidzone, an annual four-day Easter holiday program attended by 160 children and manned by 50 volunteers who offer entertainment and activities for children during the school holidays.

LET’S TALK MONEY

with DANIEL MCGREGOR

How to Make REAL Financial Progress in 2024

I

t’s hard to believe January has already passed us by. One month down, eleven to go in 2024… Is this the year you get your money doing more?

Research by Finder found Aussies are planning to get on top of their finances this year. More than 4 in 5 Australians (83%) say they have set financial goals for 2024. Yet, 80% of us abandon our New Year’s resolutions within a month. So, one month into the year, have you explored and/or made changes to your finances that are going to improve your situation going forward? Or has the willpower to do so gradually slipped away as life gets back to the normal day-to-day stresses?

Now is the time to grab your finances by the scruff of the neck and make the commitment to follow through with things in 2024. 2024 can be your year of change, if you CHOOSE it to be. By next December, you could be joining those few who have made the changes necessary to completely alter the course of their financial future. There will be some reading this who are thinking their finances aren’t in bad shape. On top of the mortgage, saving some money along the way, but it can be easy to be lulled into a false sense of security. How confident are you that what you are doing right now is putting you on the track to one day be able to say with confidence that you can afford to stop working? If you’re not sure, or you already know within yourself that you are not doing what

needs to be done, but you’re just not sure what to do about it, then here’s your chance go get some free information! On Monday 12th February, I’ll be running a Masterclass at the Ex-Services Club to highlight the steps you can take to maximise your retirement lifestyle. The key is to get started planning for it sooner rather than later! Some of the key takeaways will be: • Ways you can make your money work harder

• Where to get help with planning for retirement This is an education-only event. As an independent financial adviser, I do not have any ties to any product providers. I believe that sound financial planning is rooted in education and that’s why this free Masterclass is designed to empower people in our community about the importance of understanding all the puzzle pieces that need to be put together to have a secure retirement.

• Understanding the different tools you can use to invest for retirement • The key numbers you need to be aware of

Cheers, Daniel

• How to avoid overpriced and risky financial products, which can be a ticking time bomb and what you can do instead

If you’d like to find out more about how INDEPENDENT financial advice could help you manage cash flow, pay off the mortgage faster, get the most out of super and invest wisely, then get in touch on 0411 484 464 or head to wealthtrain.com.au. Phil DONATO MP State Member for Orange

out and about

G’day, I recently had the privilege of welcoming Premier Minns and Minister Dib to the Orange electorate. Their visit was especially meaningful as they engaged with those impacted by the tragic floods of November 2022 in Eugowra and Molong. This was a crucial opportunity for them to witness firsthand the challenges our community faces and the realities of the reconstruction process. We celebrated a significant milestone with the opening of the Eugowra Community Childcare Centre. The Centre, now serving 87 children with 18 employed staff, is a vital asset to our community. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to everyone involved in its reopening.

KERRS CREEK

Windfarm Recently, I've been deeply involved in the discussions regarding the proposed Kerrs Creek Wind Farm near Orange. This project, with its turbines that could reach heights of up to 280 meters, is generating considerable debate within the community.

Following this, we proudly announced the $100 million Central West Recovery and Resilience Package, marking a significant step in providing much-needed support to the residents of Cabonne, Parkes, Forbes, and Lachlan Local Government Areas. I am wholeheartedly committed to working closely with all levels of government to ensure our communities receive the necessary support for efficient rebuilding. Our goal is to make the recovery process as seamless and rapid as possible as we work towards building a stronger, more resilient Central West. Additionally, meeting with Orange City Council Mayor Jason Hamling and the Councillors at Lake Canobolas was a pleasure. Observing the progress of our $1.3 million upgrade project was exciting. This project, supported by the NSW Government, Orange City Council, and Cadia Valley Operations, is set to enhance accessibility for everyone. We look forward to the improved experience at Lake Canobolas and enjoying it with our community.

Cheers, Phil

National Corrections Day

I have met with local landholders to gain a better understanding of the project's impact. From a birds-eye view, it's clear these turbines, nearly as tall as Sydney's Centrepoint Tower, will significantly alter our landscape. Concerns raised include the turbines' effect on property values, agricultural land use, and challenges in logistics and emergency responses, like aerial firefighting during bushfires.

Industry Meetings

Shedworld Tilmac Orange

Importantly, there's a noted lack of satisfactory consultation with affected landholders, leading to unanswered questions and heightened community concerns. While acknowledging the divisiveness of such developments, it's crucial to hear all sides. This includes understanding the perspectives of those in favour of the turbines on their properties. Through respectful dialogue and an open-door policy, I remain committed to being an accessible local MP, ensuring all voices are heard in this significant community matter.

Long-running live music gig reborn as ‘Off the Tracks’

L

ike the phoenix rising from the ashes, Orange’s long-running live music institution 4 on the 4loor is being reborn this Saturday under a new name ‘Off the Tracks’.

After 25 years and an incredible 324 shows, 4 on the 4loor mainstay John Carter decided to call it a day last December after the final show at the Victoria Hotel for 2023.

John launched 4 on the 4loor back in 1998 after seeing the need for a venue that would allow local bands to play their own original music. For the next 25 years, he tirelessly continued to present what he describes a “smorgasbord of music”, a monthly band showcase with anywhere from three to seven acts playing short sets of original songs. The announcement of the gig’s demise was keenly felt by local musicians, but longtime supporters Ben Lander, of Lander’s Music and Esther-rose Parton have stepped up to keep the spirit of 4 on the 4loor alive. “We thought that we had to keep this gig alive,” said Ben Landers. “It’s become a really important part of the whole music scene in Orange. It has been going for so long and meant so much to so many people. “John decides he’d done enough and he’s done a great job. He’d done a great thing for a very long time so Esther and I thought we should keep it going.” 4 on the 4loor was unlike any other gig in the region, said Esther-rose, who was a regular attendee at the monthly live music event.

LEAVING JACKSON Experience Leaving Jackson at the Orange Civic Theatre, 7.30pm Thursday, February 15, 2024. Tickets at Ticketek or call 6393 8111.

“It’s about local musicians… it’s a space where they can play original music and they have complete creative freedom. All genres are welcome and it creates a space for

younger musicians who may be playing for the first time or some of the best musicians in Orange who may want to do something a bit experimental,” she explained. “It is also a free event. It is just about keeping original music and that creative space going.” While the music scene in Orange is quite strong with many talented musicians able to make a living in many different genres, Ben said 4 on the 4loor filled an important niche and that is what they want to see continue with ‘Off the Tracks’. “It gives a different creative avenue for a lot of musicians and I think that is very important to the general fabric of music here,” he said. “It’s important to have those different things happening as well as the mainstream.” While the name may be new, ‘Off the Tracks’ will continue to follow the same format as 4 on the 4loor, Esther-rose said. “Same format, same time, same place. The first Saturday of every month at the Victoria Hotel. We have an amazing licensee there, Craig, and he’s always supported 4 on the 4loor and live music generally, so that’s great,” Esther-rose said. “But the biggest thing we’d like to ask the public right now is to just keep turning up… A lot of fans of 4 on the 4loor have come out and asked how can we keep this tradition alive and it’s really just turning up. Come on down each month and keep this scene and this creative space going!” Come down to Off the Tracks at the Victoria Hotel from 8pm this Saturday, February 3. NOTES with Keith Rawsthorne

t’s the new year and best wishes to everyone for a good, happy, healthy 2024. Roll up and enjoy the FUN and FRIENDSHIP of Probus.

activities.

reception@oclife.com.au

There will be regular monthly meetings, starting on February 7 at the usual time and place. You can expect a flow of interesting guest speakers and

Looking back, 2023 was a good year with regular meetings with great guest speakers each month, ranging from healthy aerobics to historic spiritual Comina del Santiago, and inspiring personal stories such as quadriplegic Dr Steve Petersen. Probus Month was celebrated with a luncheon including the three Orange clubs. A significant move this year was the decision for three Orange clubs to set up a committee, not to amalgamate clubs, but to co-operate in activities. This will encourage FRIENDSHIP and FELLOWSHIP while having FUN and ensure we can organise outings and trips without the concern of filling a coach.

The average cost of a coach is $1600 per day so it needs to be full to spread the cost. This was demonstrated with the tour to the Zig Zag Railway at Lithgow when the coach was full and some came along by car, with a good day had by all, including a friendly lunch at the Workies Club and a quiet, sleepy drive home.

Induction of Gary Morgan

The year concluded with a very tasty Christmas luncheon with a happy crowd of Probians and partners who enjoyed the turkey, ham, etc. Also a singing lesson from a couple of vocally challenged members, but all good fun and friendship. (Christmas in Australia, on a scorching summer day, in a rusty Holden ute, etc). Rodney showed his musical talent by complaining about the “synchronisation” of the lead singers. Looking forward to the year, our guest speaker on February 7 will be local historian Elizabeth Griffin who will undoubtedly reveal some hitherto neglected facts and figures about Orange.

Thought for today: “When we are flat on our back, there is nowhere to look but up.” (Beason.)
