Thank you to our Sponsors:

Orange City Life is grateful to the following sponsors for their ongoing support over many years. These sponsorships, among others things, have enabled us to bring our readers a lot more enjoyment to our publications than would otherwise be possible. In return, we ask you to please support them as often as you’re able.

The year continues to speed along with school holidays almost upon us and there has even been talk of Christmas in the OC Life office! And of actually taking holidays!

On Friday evening, I got to take a peek at the newly reopened Turners Function Centre, now known as Banksia Orange. It’s an amazing space and a function centre/venue of its kind has been something Orange has been missing. Good luck to the team from the Union Bank who have taken it on.

With the weather warming up, it won’t be long before bushfire season is upon us. Our local Rural Fire Service brigade is holding a “Get Ready Weekend” event at Bunnings from 10am to 3pm this Saturday, so head along and chat to local brigade members about how you can get prepared for the season ahead. Bring the kids as there’ll be a gold coin donation merry-go-round, toy truck races, a duck pond, a firetruck display and walk-through, an information tent, a barbecue and more.

Until next week!

Manny’s magical wish comes true!

anny the fairy received a magical wish come true, when she was taken on her very own fairy adventure to Far North Queensland.

Six-year-old Savannah, who likes to be referred to as Manny, had her wish granted by Make-A-Wish Australia.

Manny and her family travelled from Orange to The Magical Lane near Cairns, where all the fairies and butterflies live, for a big fairy adventure.

Manny is currently in recovery from Wilms tumour, a rare kidney cancer. When she was undergoing treatments, Manny would let her imagination run wild, fantasising about going on fairy

Madventures and hoping that one day she would be able to go on one of her own.

Manny’s wish began with a series of Wish Anticipation moments where she was sent letters and videos by fairies to complete various tasks to grow her heart wings through kindness, care for nature and dancing and music in preparation for her visit to the secret fairy hideaway at Kuranda.

On the day of her wish, Manny met a real-life fairy who told her enchanting stories of the fairy world and gifted Manny her own fairy wings. Immersed in the magical atmosphere, Manny drank a special fairy tea while she learnt all about fairy secrets before heading o on her own quest to find fairy dust.

...Manny is still talking about her wish and showing her school friends all the trinkets and fairy dust she brought home...

Manny’s mother Marie was overwhelmed by how special Manny’s fairy adventure wish was, and said it was the perfect way to celebrate Manny’s resilience and health journey.

“The wish was an emotional time for me. Kids are more resilient, but I was so nostalgic about the whole thing,” Marie said.

“Manny is still talking about her wish and showing her school friends all the trinkets and fairy dust she brought home.

“This magical wish experience was for every time she endured an operation or had chemotherapy. This is to say, ‘You did such an amazing job Manny, you deserve this time of complete happiness.’”

LANEWAY LIGHTING GETS NOD OF APPROVAL

GERALD POWER RE-ELECTED DEPUTY MAYOR

Councillor Gerald Power will continue to serve as Orange’s deputy mayor following his re-election at last week’s council meeting.

Cr Power was elected from a field that originally included Crs Je Whitton, Tony Mileto and Mel McDonell.

The rundown corridor between Kathmandu and Bed Bath and Table on Summer Street is set to have a revamp, after Orange City Council’s decision to install a new lighting art project.

The laneway links Summer Street to the Orange Central Square Shopping Centre car park, and is currently overrun with gra ti on the walls, and dim lighting throughout.

The project is set to improve lighting and safety, and transform what is now an area people avoid.

At last week’s meeting, Council chose a design by artist Daniel Templeman for the new look laneway, which will include a lighting installation attached to the ceiling of the 60-metre pedestrian walkway.

Business owners surrounding the laneway are thrilled that something is finally being done about it, stating it has “definitely seen better days”.

“People use it often, and especially with the dance studio back there, it’s just not nice to walk through with the smell of urination and other things people have left there. It’ll be great once it’s done, as long as its upkept and maintained. Because inevitably people will still vandalise and do other things in it, so as long as it’s looked after I think it’ll be great,” a Bed Bath and Table employee said.

“We’re looking forward to having it completed, anything will be better than what it looks like now,” a Katmandu employee said.

The cost of the $200,000 project will be shared

equally by a grant from the NSW Government’s Infrastructure Grant for Arts and Culture program and Orange City Council.

Opponents of the laneway project have vented their frustrations on social media, stating their concerns over the cost and belief that it will quickly be vandalised again.

“Why? They will only destroy it again,” one commenter stated.

“If they’re going to waste that much money, at least use a local artist,” read another comment.

Despite concerns, the project is going ahead and is set to start in the new year.

Orange Deputy Mayor Gerald Power says that ultimately safety will be improved for residents.

“This laneway is pretty much at the centre of the city and is well overdue for improvements. The fact that we can improve safety and lighting and beautify the laneway is a win-win,” Cr Power said.

Benefiting directly, The United Dance Project owner Leesa Chaseling is excited by the project and what it will mean for her business.

“We’ve been in this location just o the laneway for nine years and now knowing the area will shortly be upgraded is so exciting,” Ms Chaseling said.

“It’s going to make the entrance to the dance studio so much more inviting for the families with small children who come to our classes every week.”

Cr Power will serve as deputy mayor until September 2024, when the next round of local council elections in NSW is due to be held.

COUNCIL TO NEGOTIATE WITH TENDERERS OVER CONSERVATORIUM COST

Orange City Council has not accepted any of the tenders for the construction of the new Orange Conservatorium and Planetarium as all exceeded the available budget.

The budget for the new conservatorium and planetarium has previously been stated as being $25 million.

Council says sta will now negotiate with all tenderers to achieve a “cost-e ective solution which aligns with Council’s objectives for the project.”

history

The 138-year-old heritage-listed shearing shed at Old Eurowabang is one of the largest ever built in the region and arguably the most unique wool shed in all of Australia.

Built on the side of a hill, the shed consists of four long wings linked in the centre by the main shearing floor of 40 stands. It has the capacity to hold 4,000 sheep on the grating and in its busiest season, 90,000 sheep went through its doors.

“The shed is totally unique,” Old Errowanbang owner Jann Harries said. “It’s built over four levels. Got 40 shearing stands. Has an indoor plunge dip, the only wool shed in Australia with an indoor plunge dip.

“They built this wool shed to use the fall of the land to get those four levels in. The intention was for the wool to start on the board where it was shorn and then it went down, was bailed up and then was rolled onto a dray at the woolroom door and taken through to Carcoar to the railhead to go to Sydney to the wool sales… but the idea was

that the bulk wool all went down downhill.”

Errowanbang was among the earliest of the pastoral settlements beyond the Blue Mountains, with the original homestead built using convict labour by William Lawson the Younger, the son of the British soldier and explorer, William Lawson credited with the first successful crossing of the Blue Mountains in 1813.

In 1885, the then sprawling property of 100,000 acres was sold to Francis Hopkins and Alexander Wilson. Alexander was the brother of the prominent pastoralist and politician, Sir Samuel Wilson.

It was Wilson and Hopkins who oversaw the building of the Errowanbang Shed.

“It’s the most unique shed,” Jann said. “I named it, the best-kept secret in the district.”

But making sure the old heritage-listed shed is around for future generations is no easy task, nor cheap.

Despite many approaches to heritage funding bodies, Jann has had no luck in getting financial assistance to keep up with the needed repairs and maintenance. It’s only been thanks to volunteer labour and, more recently, fundraising through public open days that the old shearing shed’s condition

hasn’t deteriorated further.

“I think it’s five times that we’ve had it totally open to the public,” Jann said. “My fatherin-law never had it open to the public at all, ever… so a lot of Carcoreans have never been out to have a look at it let alone the rest of the country.

“But I just decided years ago that enough is enough; if it’s going to be repaired, it’s got to pay for itself… the farming income sometimes is not there and that’s why I keep doing these days, trying to get the money back in to keep it maintained.”

It has been almost a decade since the last large-scale open day at Old Errowanbang, but next weekend Jann is once again opening the farm gates to the public.

Between 10am and 3pm on Saturday and Sunday, September 23-24, volunteers will run guided tours through the remarkable shearing shed.

All Jann is asking for is a $10 entry fee (kids are free) to go towards preserving and maintaining this remarkable piece of local history.

“At this point, it needs a lot of TLC again because the stumps all sink underneath and once they start sinking, they fall out and then

that’s not holding up the floor structure, which in turn holds up the roof,” she said.

“So any money raised goes straight back into keeping the maintenance going. There’s never enough. It’s like a bottomless pit when you start talking about finances and maintenance, but everything every dollar earned goes straight back into it and helps purchase the materials that we need.”

The Old Errowanbang Woolshed 2023 will be open to the public on Saturday, September 23 and Sunday, September 24. Gates open 10am–3pm. Cost is $10 (kids under 12 years free). There will be a barbecue and co ee van available along with ra es and a chocolate wheel. People are advised to bring cash as mobile reception is limited.

Meet your local Bosch Car Service workshop

Orange’s Hi-Tec Vehicle Management already has a great reputation for quality mechanical work and unbeatable customer service, now as an accredited Bosch Car Service workshop they are part of one of the world’s largest independent workshop networks.

When Geoff and his wife Donna began HiTec Vehicle Management five years ago, their vision was to create a business that took the stress and hassle out of getting your vehicle serviced — to do things better.

Now, as a Bosch Car Service workshop they have the backing of the world’s largest automotive supplier which means you can rest easy knowing your vehicle is in the hands of the industry’s best.

“Bosch is a massive company. They do everything from dishwashers to electronics for

aerospace, but they probably do the majority of electronics in cars worldwide, of all makes and models,” Geoff said.

“As a Bosch Car Service workshop, the training and the support from Bosch that we can get is brilliant! Bosch provides training so we stay up to date with the latest electric cars and latest internal combustion cars too.”

It also means Hi-Tec Vehicle Management now has the latest state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and direct assistance to technical expertise from Bosch Australia.

“Before we were out there on our own, but now we can get more information and technical backup for cars that have really complex problems,” Geoff said.

We have also added a Bosch air conditioning service unit, so we can do all your airconditioning service, as well as brakes, suspension, LPG servicing… there’s few things we can’t do here.”

It’s where the “management” in Hi-Tec

Vehicle Management comes in, Donna explained.

“We’ve been building our business and equipping ourselves so that we don’t have to outsource anything,” she said.

Our mission is to be able to provide our customers with a one-stop experience for their vehicle needs and for us to manage their car for without our customers needing to visit multiple businesses for different repairs. We manage your vehicle for you.”

Being a member of the Bosch Car Service network means all vehicle servicing, maintenance and repairs undertaken at Hi-Tec Vehicle Management come under the Bosch Car Service Nationwide Warranty. Today, don’t forget to ask R U OK?

Today, September 14, is R U OK? Day, when Australians are promptedto let the people we care about know that we are here to really hear them.

Asking R U OK? is the first step, but you also need to genuinely listen to what comes next. We may ask how they’re doing, or what’s going on often. But asking how someone is, really, is a simple question that can help the people in our world feel supported and connected.

SUICIDE SURVIVORS SUPPORT GROUP: to be there in time of need

“I know how important that is: being there,” says Steve Seymour, founder of a new support group for adult suicideattempt survivors.

A survivor himself, when Steve found himself in crisis years ago, he struggled to get the help and support he needed.

“When my mental health first hit me, I was unaware of what was happening to me and you’re at the mercy of the mental health system helping you because you have no idea… and I never really got anywhere,” recalls Steve.

“And I came to a point where I took that option, being fortunate that I woke up the next morning. And I realised I had a kind of a second chance at it. It kind of woke me up a bit and it made me more determined to get right.”

A passionate advocate for raising awareness around mental health and suicide, Steve has been involved with the Orange Suicide Prevention Network and the national lived-experience of suicide organisation Roses in the Ocean.

He’s seen how support groups that connect survivors of suicide, like the one he has founded, can play an important role.

“I actually did lived-experience suicide prevention for groups and we found pretty amazing feedback because you can be more vulnerable and speak of yourself and people tend to relate and connect better,” says Steve.

“There’s a higher risk rate of suicide for people who have

already made an attempt on their life, so they’re in a higher bracket of more danger. That was what gave me the idea of this.”

The Orange Suicide Survivors Support Group is being run under the auspices of local mental health awareness group Blue Moto, which also holds regular men’s get-togethers in Orange and organises the annual Ride Blue suicide awareness ride (taking place this year on October 14).

The first meeting of the group will take place at 6pm Wednesday, September 20 at Giyalong Ganya Community Service Centre at 286 Lords Place. The group will then meet face-to-face on the third Wednesday of each month at the centre. But people are also encouraged to join the private Facebook group, Suicide Survivors Support Group, where they can reach out at any time.

“I’m trying to make a junction where people have got access and are able to communicate,” says Steve.

“And the thing I like about the Facebook group is some people are reluctant to front a crowd, so you’ve got the opportunity to be a bit incognito there… It’s a closed group, the only people that see it are members, so you get an opportunity to say what you feel and there’s no judgement.

“Hopefully they’ll be able to use both and it just keeps the conversation going on the Facebook group in between the monthly meetings.”

For more information you can contact Steve Seymour on 0444525475.

R U OK? Conducted research to understand what a meaningful R U OK? Conversation looks like for Australians in 2023, and there were three key things that stood out.

Trust: they need to know the person they speak to is someone they trust, and for many, someone they are close to.

Authenticity: they want to know the person asking them genuinely wants to hear an answer.

Environment: people prefer to have these conversations in a private space with enough time to share what they want to say.

Sometimes we just have a feeling that someone we know or care about is just not themselves. They might be behaving di erently, or maybe a bit more agitated or withdrawn. R U OK? encourages everyone to trust that gut instinct, and act on it.

By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you’ve noticed, you could help that family member, friend, or workmate open up. If they say they are not OK, you can follow our conversation steps to show them they’re supported and help them find strategies to better manage the load. If they are OK, that person will know you’re someone who cares enough to ask.

It might be a small thing, but it can have a mighty ripple e ect.

Ask R U OK? because a conversation could change a life.

PROSTATE CANCER Awareness Month

September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation reports that prostate cancer stands as the most prevalent form of cancer among men in Australia. Annually, around 17,000 men receive a diagnosis, and approximately 3,000 succumb to this illness. These statistics are indeed alarming!

The pivotal factor is early detection, and it's crucial for men to engage with their GP if they exhibit any symptoms, have a family history, or simply want to discuss their potential risks. Please, do not postpone or overlook any symptoms. As a community, we must collectively raise awareness about prostate cancer because, together, we can contribute to reducing these statistics. Early detection and treatment are the best ways to beat this disease.

MINISTER MORIARTY

It was an honour to have the Minister for Agriculture, Regional, and Western NSW, the Hon. Tara Moriarty MLC visit the electorate to assist in the release of several hundred rainbow trout into Lake Canobolas.

Recreational fishing appeals to individuals of all ages and abilities from children to adults, and both men and women. With the tease of warmer weather ahead, it is a popular pastime for locals and visitors alike. Recreational fishing is cherished by a significant number, if not millions, of Australians each year and serves as a major attraction for eco-tourism. The fees generated from fishing licenses are reinvested into restocking programs, contributing to a sustainable and thriving fish population. We were particularly pleased to have members of the Orange Trout Acclimatisation Society, one of the oldest such societies in NSW, present to witness the release.

I recently had the chance to revisit Cadia Valley and personally observe the progress and get the opportunity to chat to the local workforce. Descending to 650 meters below sea level, I experienced a truly distinctive working environment that can only be accurately appreciated through an onsite visit. During my time there, I even conducted a radio interview with Ray Hadley and had him give a shout-out to the dedicated individuals working at Cadia.

OCTEC is one of Orange’s success stories. Starting as a two person youth service way back in 1976 with support from Orange City Council, OCTEC now delivers employment and training services from 270 service locations across Australia’s eastern seaboard.

OCTEC’s o ce infrastructure extends north to Rockhampton in Central Queensland and south to Warrnambool in Western Victoria, as well as out to Wentworth in Far West NSW. As the largest not-for-profit specialist employment services provider in the country, OCTEC provides services in hundreds of communities to more than

30,000 job seekers and students.

Despite this broad scope of responsibility, OCTEC retains a strong ongoing connection to its roots. Many will know that OCTEC provides Disability Employment Services from its head o ce in Old Town Hall and Workforce Australia Transition to Work services from the former Lands O ce building, as well as Training Services from the Phillips Centre at Croagh Patrick College. But there are a range of other ways that OCTEC supports the Orange community.

OCTEC owns and operates Huntley Berry Farm near the Orange airport, 15 minutes south of Orange. The Farm is an

OCTEC retains strong connection to its roots

Australian Disability Enterprise providing supported employment for people with disability, as well as being a tourist destination for visitors to Central West NSW wanting to experience a working farm and pick their own fresh produce.

Last year OCTEC introduced a scholarship program for tertiary students experiencing financial hardship. The program is named after long-term OCTEC Board Member and Orange City Councillor, Glenn Taylor, who sadly passed away in early 2022. Thirteen Central West NSW students including 10 from Orange and Molong were recipients of the inaugural scholarship program.

OCTEC supports other community, not-for-profit organisations with donations and sponsorship. Two recent examples are the OCTEC’s donation of a fully-equipped command trailer to the Orange Rural Fire Service, and a significant cash donation to the Orange Regional Conservatorium to assist with the fit out of the soon to be built new conservatorium.

Along with OCTEC’s maintenance of a number of significant heritage buildings in Orange, OCTEC’s scope of support is broad, with no sign of an end to its growth.

Human Health Risk Assessment

A Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA) commissioned by Cadia in response to community concerns regarding air and water quality has concluded that there is no impact on human health, and that the associated risk is ‘low and within acceptable limits’ when measured against Australian health standards.

Conducted by a NSW EPA accredited auditor from SAGE Environmental Services, the study assessed the potential risks to human health within the community surrounding Cadia from operating emissions (modelled by January 2022 – February 2023) and environmental sample data collected from a residential drinking water sampling program. The risk assessment was then independently reviewed and verified by a Victorian EPA-accredited auditor from Senversa.

The HHRA identified several pathways where there could be potentially elevated risks due to copper exposure from using tap water. In all instances where increased risks were found, the main factor was the tap water itself – a direct correlation with building materials. The di erence in the amount of copper between the tap and tank could be up to 1000 times greater than in the tank and aligns with results from the NSW EPA’s water sampling program. While cadmium was also identified as a potential concern at one property, it too was attributed to building materials. The level of all other contaminants measured was low and within relevant human health standards.

A copy of the Human Health Risk Assessment conducted by SAGE Environmental Services, along with all other environmental monitoring reports, is available on the Cadia website, www.cadiavalley.com.au.

For over 170 years the people of CentralWestern NSW have been fighting for a crossing over the Macquarie River between Mudgee and Orange at Dixons Long Point. For residents of our area it has become known as the Holy Grail of unfinished road projects.

A crossing at Dixons Long Point would dramatically cut travel time between Orange and Mudgee, improve connectivity between the Central West and Hunter Valley regions and drive economic growth and tourism.

With an impressive cost-benefit ratio, this project makes perfect sense. I have personally worked with local Indigenous communities to appropriately address cultural heritage concerns, geotech work had been carried out

and we had $27.8 million sitting in the kitty. Unfortunately, the government has now roadblocked it.

Sadly, all the government seems to do is try to point-score on the opposition about projects not being sufficiently funded. This is just a cop-out.

There isn’t a project in the country that didn’t experience a rise in costs during the pandemic and the subsequent inflation explosion. That shouldn’t be an excuse for snatching away infrastructure money that’s already in the bank and dudding the people west of the sandstone curtain.

I ask again: what happened to the money? Where is the $27.8 million now, and why can’t any of it be used to carry out upgrades to the existing road and crossing? We need answers, not political games.

You can see my question to the Prime Minister and the other speeches on my Facebook page.

Perfect weather saw a huge crowd gather for the 122nd Cudal Show last weekend! Our country shows play a vital role in bringing the community together and show support for the local agriculture sector.

Country shows are an outstanding country tradition, and after all that Cudal has been through with the natural disaster of November last year, it was terrific for the local community to come together as it recovers and rebuilds from that devastating event.

Thank you very much to Chris Solomon and all of the organisations and volunteers for their hard work. The 2023 Cudal Show certainly was a triumph!

Of course no Cudal Show is complete without catching up with Cudal legend Merle Parrish! Merle has been involved in the Cudal Show since she was 7 years old (that’s 84 years) and her enthusiasm and support of the Show has never wavered.

This year, Merle was again successful in the flower and cooking sections! I was however saddened to learn that Merle is soon to move away from Cudal to live with her family in Sydney.

She has however promised to make regular visits.

Merle shot to national fame after her MasterChef appearence as a judge when contestants were asked to cook her signature peach blossom cake!

When was the last time you got in the car to drive somewhere you hadn’t been before without looking up directions or having a map to follow?

Our financial futures are the same, yet most of us don’t have a financial roadmap to follow. Instead, most of us make regular financial decisions without really knowing where they are leading us.

For starters, where would you like your financial journey to take you? What is the financial future you would like to work towards? Once you know that, the steps can start to be put in place to work out how to get there.

When it comes to our finances, often we’ll need to take detours and sometimes use more fuel than at other times. Sometimes our financial ‘vehicles’ will need a few ‘repairs’ along the way. And sometimes we’ll need to make a few upgrades.

The key is to know the destination you are trying to reach.

That’s why financial planning is so important. The reality is that most Australians have put more e ort into planning their last holiday

Do you have a financial roadmap, or are you flying blind?

than they’ve put into planning their financial futures. And that is why when it comes time to retire – the ultimate destination for financial freedom — so many people end up regretting not having had a financial plan to get them to the retirement destination they were hoping to reach.

Most of us have hobbies and interests that we’d happily be doing rather than working. Unfortunately, the reality is that once most people reach retirement, they have to reduce their lifestyle because they don’t have the money to fund the lifestyle they had while they were working. In a lot of cases that

lifestyle reduction is dramatic.

Often, financial planning is new territory for most people. The first step is getting started. And just like the case with many activities people might do while on holidays, it is useful to have a guide to help you navigate the best way to get to the destination you would like to reach. When it comes to money, that guide is a financial adviser.

Money isn’t hard, it’s not actually complicated at all.

The di cult part is getting hold of the map and then getting started. Sadly, too many people don’t challenge the status quo and are

slowly but surely veering further and further o course as each year passes.

The airline industry has a rule of thumb known as the “1 in 60” rule: for every degree a plane veers o its course, it misses its target destination by one mile for every 60 miles you fly. This means that the further you travel, the further o course you are.

The flight distance from Sydney to Melbourne is 713 kms. Veering o course by just one degree would see the plane miss the airport by more than almost 12 km!

In a plane, veering o course can be lifethreatening… a mountain might end up being in the way! When it comes to your finances, veering o course is unlikely to be lifethreatening, but it is almost certainly lifestylethreatening.

Don’t keep going through life on auto-pilot in potentially the wrong direction. If you are potentially veering o course, now is the time to start following the map to the destination you want to reach.

Do you have a roadmap for your finances, or are you flying blind?

THE GOOD ENOUGH Parent

The coward’s guide to life

Miss 14 jumps in the car after school and excitedly shows me an award slip —she’s getting an academic award this week!

“Congratulations! I’m so proud of how hard you’ve worked,” I say while hugging her.

“What’s it for?” asks Miss Nine from the back, who is reading the book club catalogue and wasn’t listening. “I’m getting suspended,” Miss 14 jokes. “I was caught vaping.”

“Was it strawberry? They’re my favourite,” jokes Miss Nine, who had a run-in with a classmate’s older brother’s vape a few months ago.

“No, blueberry. They’re the best,” jokes Miss 14. At least, I hope they’re both joking.

“I like, um, cherry,” I say, having never used, or even seen a vape in my life. “Anyway, well done on the award!”

While Miss 14 loads her violin into the back and fights with Miss Nine about space for it, I discreetly add “look around vape shop so I can bluff my way through conversations with the kids” to my calendar for tomorrow.

Unfortunately, I add it to the family calendar instead and Miss 14 proceeds to laugh at me for being out of touch. I make a mental note to allow her sister to sit in the front seat tomorrow afternoon as retribution.

Upon getting home I made the mistake of collecting the mail. Like most people my age, all our correspondence is set up to get emailed, so the only paper mail I receive is letters from my bank announcing my mortgage interest rate is going up and, inexplicably, letters from school addressed to Mrs “Husband’s name” like it’s 1950 and I lost my first name when I got married. Both are equally rage-inducing. Today’s lucky dip of poverty vs womenhave-no-rights winner is… poverty.

And so I opened the worst letter from my bank I’ve ever received.

“Dear Mrs Good-enough Parent, we are updating the terms of our direct debit payments. All is good, we would never try to screw you over so here in tiny print are our terms and conditions.”

I immediately read them and am particularly horrified by one sentence: “If the credit card attached to the direct debit expires we will just give the merchants your new credit card details. How handy! This includes gyms.” Yes, they SPECIFICALLY mention gyms. Here’s the thing. If you’re like me, and you signed up to a gym membership one hungover New Year’s day, and then realised midJanuary that you are too lazy and committed to pizza to be a gym member, you might have tried to pop in and quit. You would have then also discovered how they swap out friendly Matt from reception with Rachel, the bullying personal trainer, who says things like, “You’re fat. You need us!” And you leave in tears and just decide to pay the $60 a month until October 2025 WHEN YOUR CREDIT CARD EXPIRES AND THEY CAN’T TAKE YOUR MONEY ANYMORE.

Well, apparently the NAB is in Big Fitness’s pocket because you now have that direct debit until the day you fake your own death and move to Tasmania to start a goat farm under a new identity.

So beautiful people of Orange, I am now on the lookout for a new kind of personal trainer. I need someone to train me in the art of “the coward’s guide to personal finance and confrontation” i.e. How to stand up to the Rachels in my life. How to have the school use my name… and to explain to me what vaping is all about! I’m happy to pay by direct debit!

According to OzHarvest we waste 7.6 tonnes of food each year in Australia, 70 per cent of which is perfectly edible. The majority of this food waste comes from our own homes. And that, believe it or not, is costing us around $2,500 per family, per year.

Would you like to know the top five most-wasted foods in our country? Vegetables, bread, fruit, bag salads and leftovers.

I know that many of us, especially here in the countryside, are looking to reduce the amount of food waste, make better choices in the supermarkets, and save money. But it is true, too, that the lack of time, less cooking at home, and tight budgets are making people rely more and more on fast food options.

So how can we improve the current food waste situation, a reader asked me the other day? Well, my advice is to buy less, buy whole (if you can), store your food well, and use it all. If you need some inspiration, please watch the series War on Waste on ABC. I’m sure that will move you to the core as it did to me seeing the reality of our household habits.

I‘d like to share some tips to solve less waste with those five wasted foods at home. So today I’m going to be following the 3Rs we teach our kids at school (reduce, reuse and recycle).

I will start with a product we all have daily: bread. Whether sourdough, baguettes, French sticks, or simply sandwich bread, let me tell you a lesson I learned from my grandmother: “A piece of old bread is an opportunity to create another meal!”

You’ll be able to bring your bread alive by simply spraying some water on it and placing it in the oven at 180C. Yep, as easy as that! You’ll see how a sad piece of bread can become a delicious and crunchy piece of fresh bread in minutes. If your bread is much older, you can consider making croutons for a soup or a panzanella salad; you can blend it and make breadcrumbs for a chicken schnitzel or fish fingers; or you can use it to thicken sauces with a Picada Catalana. The options are endless! Of course, if you have a little bit of a sweet tooth, you’ll be able to make some Pain Perdu (what we call French toast here in Australia) or the Spanish torrijas

recipe that I showed you a few months ago.

The second idea I’d like to talk about is what to do with old fruit and veggies: I’m sure you know how to use them for smoothies, soups, fritters, stocks, etc. But, because it’s spring and we are going to spend more time eating cold recipes, I’d like to talk about the importance of preserving fruit and veggies by pickling them. You can chop any vegetables you are not going to use into bite-sized pieces (including the stems) and put them in a jar or container. Then in a saucepan add the same amounts of your desired vinegar and water. For example: half a cup each, add two tablespoons of sugar, a quarter tablespoon of salt and some spices you have (like black peppercorns, curry or turmeric, chilli flakes, sa ron, cumin, etc. Honestly, whatever combo you make will be OK!). Stir to dissolve on medium heat until it gets to the boiling point. Finally, add it on top of your veggies. Allow to sit in the fridge for a few days before eating. After a few days, it’s game on! Enjoy your homemade pickles. Remember, pickles can last up to three weeks easily. These pickled veggies will be fantastic for wraps, salads, flatbreads, cheese platters, sandwiches, dinner salads, etc. Another tip? Reuse your pickling liquid. See? There is no waste.

The third idea I’d like to tackle is to store our leftovers properly, so they can be a pleasant surprise another day. Kitchen fact: The correct use of the freezer will help us save a lot of money. One more tip? Use labels with what it is and the date. Like this, it will be easy to reuse.

Finally, I’d like to share with you about the weekend that Costa, the Gardening Australia host on ABC, came to Millthorpe and taught us all about how to compost properly in order to recycle the food scraps we had in the kitchen, and to make beautiful soil for our veggie gardens. Just by creating layers of green and brown material (garden clippings) plus kitchen scraps, leaves and wet paper. I never knew it was as easy as that, without having to spend a dollar! If you would like to know more you can search it on Google… he has heaps of videos about it.

I really hope you enjoy these food waste solutions with your family and friends. You’ll find that there are small changes in your daily life with a massive impact on your pocket.

Happy spring everyone!

“People like to read a good yarn, a good story, above all characters…”

Actor and author Judy Nunn talks about her new historical novel delving into an Australian sheep grazier dynasty

The charismatic and illustrious Judy Nunn is coming to Orange for one night of fun this September, just in time for the release of her new book ‘Black Sheep’.

Judy Nunn is an Australian author of both adult and children fiction, and is well known in her former years as a theatre and television actor. She is best known for her role as Dr Irene Fisher on the TV show Sons and Daughters, and as Ailsa Hogan on Home and Away.

Quite literally inspired by the popular children’s nursery rhyme, Black Sheep is a character strong historical novel about a prosperous sheep grazier dynasty, and the enigmatic young man they let into their lives. It’s a story of power, relationships, and the lengths people will go to in order to keep their secrets hidden.

“It’s written under the title, ‘there’s one in every family’”, said Ms Nunn.

“The book is based around a wealthy

sheep breeding station, and family who ran this station for several generations on the Goulburn Plains, just outside of Goulbourn which is of course a great pastoral area for sheep farming.

“It’s not ostensibly about sheep breaking, but really about the genetics of those who are breeding the sheep.”

Ms Nunn explained that the book is populated by very colourful characters, and her curiosity for ‘nature versus nurture’ shines through in this new title.

“It’s very much a treatment about what makes a bad seed or a good seed, is it genetically handed down through generations? Or is it the lives people lead and the influences they have arrived on?”

The story starts in the 1880s, and goes through to the end of world war I. While the characters are fictional, Ms Nunn bases her stories around real events. In Black Sheep’s instance, the story encounters the Australian Shearers strike, in Queensland 1891.

“Every book will have a different form

of inspiration which could be something massive or life changing, or it could be the tiniest, silliest little thing, which has happened to me,” explained Ms Nunn.

“In this case, weirdly, the original inspiration came from the Baa Baa Black Sheep nursery rhyme. When I come to Orange, I’ll do a reading from the book, which demonstrates very much my inspiration from Baa Baa Black Sheep.”

When asked why Orange residents would be interested in Black Sheep, Ms Nunn told Orange City Life that it’s “a bloody good yarn”.

Laughing, she explained that every book she writes is different.

“In this case, it is quite a generational book, but I have discovered what people across the country seem to find attractive in my novels is the combination of history and fiction.

“People like to read a good yarn, a good story, above all characters. All of my novels are very character driven, and while readers

THE VALLIES:

discover these characters, they also discover things and learn things. They think ‘gosh, I didn’t know that happened. I didn’t know that took place’. That is what interests me. Research interests me.”

While she may not have lived on a sheep farm, Ms Nunn’s extensive research has led to ample understanding of the ins and outs of the industry.

“I go and do field research, and I read a great deal. My books are pretty well researched… I try and get all my facts right, I really do. So I think that’s what interests the people of Orange. Orange, while it is a beautiful city with glorious architecture, you’re still a farming area.”

Ms Nunn hopes to see many wonderful people join at Orange City Library for her book talk on Tuesday, September 26. She hopes people come to be entertained, enlightened, and to learn.

“They’ll learn about the background of Baa Baa Black Sheep for instance!” Ms Nunn concluded.

BIG THUMBS UP to all the canola farmers in the Central West, moreso in the Parkes area. Driving along these fields of green and gold was such an uplifting and beautiful experience and an artist’s delight in both photography/ painting.

BIG THUMBS UP to the mother and her daughter (who was in a wheelchair) attending the Andre Rieu movie on Sunday. This lovely mother demonstrated to us all what unconditional love is all about, as together they danced in the aisle to the wonderful music that we all so enjoyed.

THUMBS UP Isn’t it glorious to walk along our streets in the sunshine and see the trees in blossom and so many bulbs flowering! I’ve added an extra bit of bend and stretch to my walks. I pick up bits of plastic and metal and when I have a handful, pop them into the appropriate bin. It gives me a bit more exercise and the streets get a little bit neater.

MASSIVE BIG THUMBS UP to the lovely ladies and young girls at Prouds the Jewellers. Your customer service is among the best in Orange and your lovely sta are wonderful.

THUMBS UP to the idea of developing the old Bloomfield golf course into picnic areas and game areas. Hands o , leave it alone! It’s lovely the way it is. Orange City Council has done enough damage to the other side of the old golf course.

THUMBS UP to the students and educators at Bowen Public School for your very entertaining production, “When I Grow Up”. Thoroughly enjoyed it! The best morning I’ve had in a long time. Great job.

THUMBS UP to the Orange Credit Union for the patience and care shown to Orange residents, particularly seniors. The friendly sta take time to help and explain things to those of us who are very confused, uncomfortable and lost with modern technology. So much stress is relieved knowing there is somewhere to go for personal help. The big banks are cutting all personal contact and do not have the patience or time to help the most disadvantaged.

THUMBS UP to whoever it was that found the earbuds that had fallen out of my pocket at Sir Jack Brabham soccer fields on Saturday morning and handed them in to the canteen. Very much appreciated!

BIG THUMBS DOWN to all the people who drive or walk behind a reversing car and expect that the driver has seen you. How hard is it to be courteous and stop for someone who may not have seen you? It could save your life. Take some responsibility for your safety.

BIG THUMBS UP to Anne who worked at Chemist Warehouse in Orange. You will be missed very much by myself, and many others, and by the chemist and your fellow workers. Keep well and enjoy your life.

BIG THUMBS UP to the wonderful lifesavers at the Aquatic Centre, especially Hugh and Liam, who showed such empathy and care recently when I was feeling unwell, very early on a weekday morning. Thank you from a very appreciative senior.

THUMBS UP to the wonderful chalk art installation of Superb Parrots on the steps near the Art Gallery in South Court. A very unique, colourful and creative way to showcase a local threatened bird. Hopefully, this can become a permanent feature to brighten up the steps.

Lost in Translation?

WITH LEE COOK

I have spent the last three weeks teaching English in Indonesia. Being in such a place makes you aware of how di cult communication can be when you don’t have the right words. The students struggled to understand my English, and I struggled to understand their Indonesian. Luckily, Google Translate was a life-saver in getting the message across.

For many Aussies the significance of Jesus and his death and resurrection is lost in translation. How can you believe there is a God you can’t see or

hear? Wasn’t Jesus just an old fairy tale, and his birth just a Christmas story?

Without the proper translation it just doesn’t make sense.

How can you get a good translation to really understand what is going on with Jesus and God?

The best thing to do is to ask a Christian you know.

Or you can get The Bible in a modern translation (no “thees” and “thous”) and read the stories of Jesus in the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). Your local church should be able to get you one.

How can you understand, or even reject, what you do not know? Don’t get lost because you don’t have the right translation!
