Three climbs-in-one at special Mountain run this weekend

The unique Great Volcanic Mountain Challenge takes runners on not one, but three separate ascents of Mount Canobolas before the race finishes near the top of the range.

There’s no race quite like Orange’s Great Volcanic Mountain Challenge.

As its name implies, the race takes runners on not one, but three separate ascents of Mount Canobolas, before the race finishes near the top of the range.

This year the event is also part of the Statewide running championships with results tallied towards this annual competition, and it’s not too late to enter.

Runners, however, have to compete not just against each other, but the unique topography of our most famous landmark.

“It’s not run on roads, it’s run on a track, more of a cross-country event with none of the surfaces sealed,” organiser David Manning said to differentiate the event from more conventional long-distance running races.

“It’s also part of the mountain running competition as part of the NSW Running Championship... about 15–20 of our top runners will qualify to enter this championship,” he said.

With runners aged from eight(ish) to 80,

the 11km course heads off from the Towac Pinnacle Picnic Ground nearly to the summit of Mount Canobolas.

“It’s called ‘mountain running’ it’s about a 500-metre climb, but it’s not one climb, it’s three peaks you have to ascend,” David said.

“It’s on little-used roads and bush-tracks and ends on the summit of Mt Canobolas via Mt Towac.

“So you go up Towac, then down then up ‘young Mt Canobolas’ and back down and then up ‘old man Canobolas’, we then have a complimentary bus to take you back to the start,” he explained.

The race starts at 9am on Sunday, March 27 with runners expected to finish by about noon: “The record is 43 minutes, if they haven’t finished by about 12, we’ll go looking for them,” David laughed.

With about 300 runners expected for this very special foot-race, it’s not too late to get your nomination in with entries

Seniors’ safer, wiser event on this Friday Getting our seniors back out into the community in a secure way is the theme of the “Older, Wiser, Safer” Senior’s Festival being held at Orange Function Centre this Friday.

With Central West communities beginning to emerge from the isolation felt particularly by seniors after the COVID pandemic, the event — supported by Orange City Council — is encouraging

local residents and their carers to find out information that could keep them safe and secure, Orange Mayor, Councillor Jason Hamling said.

“Because there’s a lot of support available to the elderly, more and more people are able to stay in their homes living independent and healthy lives,” Cr Hamling said.

“But that also means, older residents

need to learn about safeguards to protect themselves from financial scams. All kinds of problems can be avoided if an elderly person has a Power of Attorney authority in place in case, they are unable to make decisions for themselves,” he added.

At each session, a panel of experts will be available over morning or afternoon tea to help local seniors and their family members or carers, understand all these issues with practical information and
