After the last two years, most of us are especially looking towards a solid stress-free Christmas break this year. December and January are still our main holiday seasons with us all tending to take time off somewhere between Christmas Eve and the return to school just after Australia Day. “Orange City Life” is no different, our last edition for 2021 will be on Thursday, December 16, with our first issue back on Thursday, January 13. But until then, we’ve got some great stories to celebrate the festive season. In that spirit, this week sees more of our highly-popular and much-missed social pages as locals start to really hit their social season straps.

“Getting Back” to normality? Next Wednesday will tell... Watching the recent three-part documentary “Get Back” in which Peter Jackson expertly revives footage of The Beatles writing, rehearsing, fighting, and recording their 1970 album, “Let It Be”, has been a revelation. For an old Beatles fan – the first pop album I ever heard was the emblematic “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” – seeing the lads from Liverpool laughing together as still-young men 50 years ago was an oddly time-warping experience. As well as highlighting their unaffected creativity – and love of toast, marmalade and tea while they were working – another striking feature was that their famous final concert on the Apple office roof-top never had any security, with people coming and going as they wished. Much different times from our own. In an odd parallel to 2021, Paul McCartney jokes at one point during rehearsals about a sniffle: “I think I’ve got the Hong Kong Flu,” to which the other three laugh innocently. Fifty years later, could Christmas 2021 finally signal the end of our own version of the Hong Kong Flu – our two-year battle to control the coronavirus – officially known as COVID-19?

With almost all restrictions in NSW lifting next Wednesday, December 15, or when we reach a 95 per cent fully-vaccinated rate (it is now about 93 per cent), some return to normality would be welcome. We’ve become so used to mandatory mask-wearing, social distancing, vax passports, quarantine periods, super-spreader events, QR Codes and booster shots, it will be
interesting to see what “normality” now actually looks like. It’s hard to recall now that it was only in late January last year, when reports of a new virus – supposedly escaped from a “wet market” in Wuhan, China – started filtering through into our news. Then came the international, interstate and regional travel bans; home quarantining; the six-week lockdown to “flatten the curve”; “Operation Warp-Speed” to fast-track development of the vaccines; and gradual lifting of restrictions, albeit mostly for the fully-vaxxed. Will our society next Wednesday, then, return to those seeminglyinnocent days of pre-December 2019, or are we entering a “new normal” of ever-evolving variants, continuing restrictions, safety plans and continued mask-wearing in public? With the recent discovery of the Omicron variant – highly-contagious but apparently only presenting with mild symptoms – we could again be entering a period of continued in-and-out travel restrictions, quarantines and lockdowns. But while the new variant may engender a “oh no, not again” sense in many of us, this new form of the disease may actually be good news. Viruses tend to become more infectious and less fatal as they evolve; killing your host is not a good long-term survival strategy for any disease, so this new variant could signal the moment when COVID becomes “just like the flu”. Hopefully then, 2022 could mark when we may finally all be able to “get back” to our lives.

Service offers solace during bitter-sweet time for many Christmas isn’t, for everyone, all cheer and presents, mistletoe, fine food, and good times. Memories of those we’ve lost also make the occasion a bitter-sweet time for many, with a unique “Service of Solace” (solace: comfort in a time of sorrow) being held in Orange next week. The one-off Service — at Orange Uniting Church in Anson St at 6pm next Wednesday, December 15 — is designed to console those for whom the festive season brings sad, as well as happy, memories. “It’s an annual service, this is the third year that we’ve done it… we think it’s important as we head into Christmas,” the Reverend Andrew Cunningham explained. “We’re very aware that, for individuals who have lost someone around this time, it can be a very difficult time of year.” The service encourages both private and personal ways to commemorate those we have lost, he added. “People can write the name down and we read the name out during our prayers… “We also have a bare Christmas tree, and they take little stars, and they write the name
of the loved one and, during the service, they are asked to hang the star on the Christmas tree… they can also light a candle for those they wish to remember,” he added. The pain and loss of losing a loved one, he said, doesn’t necessarily fade and disappear with time. “For some people, it doesn’t matter if it was last year or many years before, people have a sense of loss at a time when many are celebrating.” Co-organiser, the Reverend Alan Robinson, said that the current restrictions that have impacted public mourning, such as limits on funeral attendances, make the event more important than usual.

Having done that people feel much freer to move on and celebrate Christmas with family and friends, he added. “It’s a way of them acknowledging their loss. Before they get to enter into the spirit of Christmas, knowing they have remembered their loved one.”
Some churches and funeral homes have begun memorial services in recent years, he explained, and these have proved to be beneficial.
Those attending this service are invited to list, at the door, the name of the person or persons remembered. This name will be included in a time of prayer.
“I compile the service from other services that I have seen, people do find it helpful, especially helpful during COVID,” he said.
There is an opportunity to light a candle and those attending are also invited to bring a decoration or photograph which symbolises the person remembered. This

Rev Cunningham said that the special service is also one of joy, as well as mourning. “We also sing a few Christmas carols as well.” COVID 19 requirements will be in place, and all are welcome to attend. The occasion will be one of the first services that that the refurbished church has hosted, following extensive work which included replacing the copper metal plates on the spire. “We’re reopening again this (last) Sunday after being closed from about March 2020,” Rev Cunningham said. “Each maker and supplier was selected via a strict selection process, which takes into consideration the making process, quality, presentation, styling, aesthetics, function, originality of the range, materials used, what is needed in the mix and the maker’s personal passion for what they do and customer focus!”
“We’ve seen about 70 per cent of local outdoor markets cancelled due to weather... so often, on the day, they’ve had to cancel” she added.
With about 40 artists taking part in this first event, space will not be a problem, she said. The market is taking up almost the whole top floor of the Ex-Services Club.
“The added advantage of the markets being held inside the spacious function rooms of the Orange Ex-Services Club, is that weather will not affect the market weekend in any way.
“Being inside the Club, it will absolutely go ahead whatever the weather, and that’s the certainty that a lot of creatives need,” she said.

Last week Orange Anglican Grammar School hosted an exciting guest to their grounds, Olympian Eloise Wellings. Eloise is a two time Olympian and nine times National Champion over 5000m and 10,000-metre track events.
Eloise explained to students after their session, “Motivation follows movement. Sometimes when we feel unmotivated, not feeling like we really want to run or train, it’s always important to go and do the first thing, just do something.
While visiting the school Eloise spent time with female Secondary Students in a Q&A session and ran a training session for students from Year 2 through to Year 12.
“Most people think they have to be motivated to actually do something, when that’s not the case.
In her training session, students were given the opportunity to participate in a high-performance session that focused on warmups, running drills, dynamic stretching and short anaerobic fitness sessions, while also looking at mental skills such as dealing with nerves, performing under pressure and thriving when it counts.

at the pre-school age impacts how well children will later learn when at school. She said that these factors also impact their long-term quality of life and can help set them up for success in the future.
This important work was highlighted recently as part of a series of “Speeches Talks” around Australia with an event hosted by Orange City Library.
Colleague Robyn Parker also read from the Speech Pathologists “Book of the Year” winner for children 3-5 years “Boo Loves Books” that was written by Kaye Baillie and illustrated by Tracie Grimwood.
This involved a special “Speeches Storytime” featuring two speech pathologists – Karen Trengove and Robyn Parker from the “Learn2Communicate” group.
“Boo Loves Books” is described as “a delightful story about a little girl named Phoebe who is a reluctant reader. The story discusses themes that are relatable to children of this age, namely the fear of making mistakes”.
As part of the Storytime, Karen detailed the role of speech pathologists and how they can support adults and children through issues including language and fluency. She also explained how strong speech and language skills
The language is also “age-appropriate and keeps the young reader engaged”. The book discusses the topic of anxiety in children and
animals and overcoming their fears with support, but in a light-hearted manner. The ending is sweet and allows the young reader to think of what may happen next to the main characters. Robyn models this behaviour for parents and carers who are interacting with children to help them talk about the story. She said they could do this by making comments and asking open-ended questions such as “I wonder...” and “I’m thinking...” or “ Why...” and “How...”. Robyn said it was also “helpful” to create awareness in this age group of the link between speech sounds, letters and words, by sounding out some of the words in books and pointing to words as you read.

“Come together“ and sing at choir open day, book launch — DAVID DIXON —
Showing the unique power of song, Orange’s “Come Together Choir” is celebrating its 11th anniversary.
Originally conceived as a six-month project to benefit older Colour City residents, the Choir next week is having a come-and-try day for those with a song in their still-youthful hearts. The group, that pre-coronavirus boasted more than 100 members, is now looking for a fresh start in 2022 to “get back” to their glory days. The open day on Tuesday, December 14, from 10-11am will also act as the launch of founding member Lorraine Ashbrooke’s history of the choir. “When we were formed in 2010, we were a ‘Música Viva’ project that was only going to last a couple of terms,” Lorraine said. “It was all designed to enhance the effect that
music has on senior citizens.” The project – part social activity and fun musical experience – was so successful that it has kept going through good years and bad for more than a decade. “Música Viva ran the program because of the benefits of singing for older people. It was organised through ‘the Con’ (Orange Conservatorium) and we all enjoyed it so much, we decided to keep on going.” The Choir’s name, Lorraine adds, has nothing to do with the Beatles song of the same name from the “Abbey Road” album. “What happened is, when we got to 20 or more members, we decided we needed a name and, because we ‘get together’ from
everywhere to sing, we called ourselves the ‘Come Together Choir’,” Lorraine explained. However, their burgeoning singing numbers for their weekly choral performances took a hit with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in February last year. “Come Together usually meets every week at the Con during school terms. We had 100 members on our books and nearly 80 came every time we got together. “But we stopped with the first lockdown and only came back in December 2020 when we were allowed to sing together at Cook Park because it is outside and were limited to 35 people each performance,” Lorraine said.

The Come Together Choir’s open day next Tuesday, December 14, will also see the launch of long-time member Lorraine Ashbrooke’s 10-year history of the choir.
Orange Conservatorium of Music on Hill Street with the event also a social occasion to welcome any new interested members. “It will be a normal rehearsal morning where our friends and relatives can attend and see what we are about and what we do. Morning tea will be served afterwards. “We will also be celebrating Christmas and the fact that we are back singing again, albeit for another two weeks. But we expect to be back ‘in force’ next year,” Lorraine said. “I will also be presenting the history of the choir, which I compiled about 12 months ago. ‘The 10-Year History – 2010-2020’ was made so much more interesting because I was able to use news clippings from ‘Orange City Life’,” she said.
Almost exclusively older citizens, the continuing shadow of COVID-19 still hangs over the group. “We only came back from lockdown four or five weeks ago with limited numbers, and everyone had to be socially-distanced and
double-vaxxed,” Lorraine said. “While we used to average 70-80 people each week, for the last few weeks we’ve had only about 45,” she said. Understanding the enduring health, social and well-being benefits of music and song
for older citizens, the group is now looking towards a bright new start in 2022. “We’re asking all our friends and family, anyone is invited to come along and have a go,” Lorraine said. The performance is on from 10am at the

FLOOD AFFECTED PRIMARY PRODUCERS I’ve received reports of farmers who’ve sought financial assistance from RAA in the wake of the flooding and natural disaster declaration and unable to qualify for grants funding. Disaster areas are classified by severity, and what financial assistance available is dependent upon what the classification is. I’m told that at present, farmers
may only apply for concessional loans and they don’t have access to grants. I’ve since contacted the offices of both the Minister for Primary Industries and Western NSW, and the Minister for Police and Emergency Services and requested they review available financial assistance to support our farmers. I’ve been advised to encourage impacted
primary producers to report damage or losses to DPI which will be useful in collating so that consideration to upgrade the disaster classification can made and therefore potentially provide access to grants funding. I’ll keep you all posted as information comes to light.

This weekend I held the last Mr Perfect BBQ for the year. As many of you know, I have been helping raise awareness of men’s mental health and suicide by holding monthly Mr Perfect BBQ’s here in Orange. These provide a safe and relaxed setting for blokes to have conversations around mental health issues. I will continue doing whatever I can to help save lives and improve the psychological well-being of people in the community. I look forward to more chats, snags and good company in 2022.
Last week I made a return visit to this fantastic culture-based and intensive indigenous education program, tailored to re-engage students with a focused and holistic development of high school-aged boys. This Orange-based initiative is relatively new, but is already showing positive outcomes. Tim Bennett and his team are passionate educators and they’ve been critical to its growing success. My SFF Upper House colleague Mark Banasiak, a former school principal and teacher, joined me for the visit to see the great work being done and what support is needed to develop and expand the program. Mark will pursue support for the program when Parliament resumes next year.

Orange Running Festival This weekend I joined the Orange Runners Club to formally begin my training for the Half Marathon I will be running at the 2022 Orange Running Festival. Attracting competitors from across the state for a weekend of running and fitness, this great local event will be held on 5th and 6th March 2022.

From horses to motorcycles for old harness racing track Canobolas Motorcycle Club could finally have a home if plans for taking-on Orange’s old harness racing track on the Bathurst Road come to fruition, spokesperson Chip Howitt says. “The CMCC currently restricted to two disciplines that are held on privately-owned land which prevents any application for government grants.
A petition on “Change.org.au” calls for locals to support establishment of a ”Moto Park” series of tracks at the facility that closed when the pacers moved to the Towac Park horse-racing track in south Orange about five years ago.
“The former Orange Harness Racing track and facilities have the potential to be developed into an integrated ‘Moto Park’ where mutual benefits could flow between motorcyclists and existing users, the Orange Karters.
Refurbishment of the largely-derelict site would be a win all-round for the Colour City and its sports facilities, Chip believes, something that is long overdue. “In a nutshell, way back before the start of COVID, Councillor Joanne McRae approached Council for us to use the trotting track… it would be the best of both worlds because the surface is still there,” he said. Current remediation work on the site only enhances future potential use of the track for motor sport racing, Chip said. “Council’s been doing some work to remove asbestos-related buildings — the canteen and a caretaker’s residence — since the club moved from there to the Equine Precinct at Towac Park,” he added. While the site remains idle, the Motorcycle Club cannot move forward with plans of its own as its current facilities are scattered on properties throughout the district. “The Motorcycle Club has two disciplines, Enduro, which we have on the north-east side of Orange, and Moto-Cross, which is at Mullion Creek,” he explained. “We are therefore keen to get access, so that both the car club and the motorcycle club can apply for grants. “We’re hamstrung at present because our tracks are on private land, and you can’t get grants from government if it’s for work on private properties,” he explained. He said that, not just the main trotting track, but also the large vacant oval-shaped inside of the track has great potential for motor
sport with a committee having drawn up preliminary plans for other circuits. “We’re keen to get a minikhana on the infield… we’ve got a working group for a motorsport park,” he said adding that the adjacent go-kart track makes the site a perfect location for a range of motor sports for the Colour City. “The site’s owned by Orange City Council. That was the purpose of the petition, to get this in front of the candidates,” he added.
“Being Council owned land, the CMCC would be able to apply for Government grants to establish the Moto Park for additional moto disciplines including Minikhana; Flat Track; Dirt Track; Supermoto; Speedway; Motocross (Junior and Senior); Stadium Supercross; Trials; Dirt and Speedway Karts. “In the process of providing these expanded recreational activities, the business community will get a timely financial boost following the closures that have resulted from
the pandemic. “We wish to petition all prospective Councillors, to support the Club in its application to use the Harness Racing Track by demonstrating widespread support from the region’s 18,000 motorcyclists and their friends and families,” the petition concludes. Chip added that proposals to sell-off the site for housing would be a missed opportunity to create a dynamic sports-focused image for the Colour City. “Council’s working on a residential housing strategy that includes eight greenfield sites. “But to turn this over to housing, we would be losing a recreational facility for starters. A motor sport precinct on the approach to town would make a statement. “Instead of just homes in a new estate, you would be saying ;’this is a town that has great sports facilities,’ which is the type of positive message that Orange should want to promote” Chip concluded.
The petition, titled, “Canobolas Motorcycle Club Access to the Unused Orange Harness Racing Track”, and with nearly 1000 signatures, provides a short history of the club and it’s hopes for the facility: “The Canobolas Motorcycle Club (CMCC) was originally known as the Orange Sports Motorcycle Club from the 1950’s when it originally had a track on the Crown Land which the Wentworth Golf Club now occupies.

New phone-based counselling service, “1800Chaplain”, is designed to complement the fine work of current groups like Lifeline, a local spokesperson said.
lthough from a Christian base, the chaplaincy on-the-line service is non-denominational and non-judgemental, National Director Michelle Fife emphasises “Our goal is to connect, not too correct. To care, but not control,” the Orangebased Chaplain who worked with Lifeline for more than three years, explained. Launch of the “1800Chaplain” service is timely as Covid restrictions begin to lift, borders open, and families prepare for Christmas holidays, along with the arrival of summer and extreme weather conditions in their communities, she believes. Chaplaincy Australia is a national network
of over 500 chaplains who deliver professional support and care across every aspect of Australian society.
“Anyone can ring, our beliefs don’t infuse the call, we provide unconditional support for anyone,” she added.
The “1800Chaplain” service will be a safe and confidential option for callers across the nation, staffed by skilled chaplains that represent a broad spectrum of nationalities, backgrounds, ages and localities.
With other phone counselling services receiving up to 3500 calls in a 24-hour period during our anxious COVID-19 times, Michelle sees the service as complementary, rather than a competitor.
“I am excited that, through the ‘1800Chaplain’ hotline, we will be able to help so many more people across our nation who need care and support in tough times,” Michelle said.
“Lifeline don’t see us as a threat, they see us as another supporting network… if callers have faith, we are happy to chat, if they don’t, we are also happy to chat,” she said.
“At the moment, we have three chaplains for every two-hour shifts from 2–10pm seven days a week.
“Lifeline do a brilliant job around this space, and we’re just another service for those seeking someone to talk to.”
Twelve students have achieved their Higher School Certificate and will be transitioning into apprenticeships, work, TAFE or day programs. “This last 12 months has reinforced, importantly, that fundamental to our achievements is the power of collaboration, and a unified destination brand representing the three Local Government Areas (LGA) of Blayney, Cabonne and Orange, and our tourism industry,” Orange360 general manager Caddie Marshall said.
“The diversity of our region’s destination appeal has led to a growth in the visitor economy, with longer stays and higher spend which is now valued at just under $500 million per annum.”
The 2021 calendar year began with the first wave of the domestic tourism boom as Sydneysiders headed west with friends, many for the first time. This led to the region enjoying an increase in length-of-stay beyond the usual three nights average to a mean 3.3 visitor nights for more than 550,000 stays; a 172 per cent

Orange Public School enjoy many traditions with their Year 6 students as we celebrate their graduation. Year 5 with the help of our wonderful P&C host a Farewell Dinner, Slideshow and Disco. This is followed by a Teachers vs Year 6 Softball Game and Water Fight. Their ‘Rite of Passage’ culminates in their formal Graduation Assembly including the passing on of their Leadership Responsibilities to Year 5. Year 6 leave the hall to the sound of the students and teachers singing our school song to them for a final time. Our Principal then delivers a private motivational address to our Year 6 graduates in our Heritage Hall, allowing the rest of the school to assemble a farewell arch of linked arms created by all the students and teachers. The students emerge from the arch with their families watching on, at the base of our Heritage School Bell, where for the first and last time they may ring the bell to signify the end of their Primary Education at Orange Public School. We are always so proud of the graduating classes. The children and families appreciate the emotion and ceremony afforded by the ‘Rite of Passage’. Of course, since the pandemic, celebrations require constant regulation and review, but Orange Public and its Year 6 still complete a true and traditional Rite of Passage into the next phase of their lives. Good Luck Year 6, OPS will always be yours and you ours, honour that with your ‘Deeds not words’ and always display kindness, as it is the right choice in all situations.

“FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD, HOT CHOCOLATE AND MUSTARD, WHILE WE’RE IN THE MOOD, COLD JELLY AND CUSTARD.” – FROM “OLIVER!” WRITTEN BY LIONEL BART Most of us would agree with the orphan boys in the stage musical “Oliver!” that food plays a very important part in our lives and that without it we would fairly quickly starve to death. It is thought that cavemen ate only enough to survive and reproduce, and that their diet depended on where they lived and what was available. The foods we eat and the ways we prepare and consume it have changed greatly since the Middle Ages, when historians claim breakfast was eaten only by the poor, sick and labouring classes and the main meals were at midday and in the evening. There was little ceremony attached to the eating of food, the one essential being that you didn’t get too greasy while tearing meat apart with your teeth and fingers! By the time Queen Victoria ascended the throne, table manners had become very strict and probably remained so until technology changed the whole idea of eating at the table with the family. We were introduced to the “TV dinner” in the late fifties when people became so entranced by television that we couldn’t tear ourselves away from the set. From there we have made more technological advances that have left some of us unable to leave our phones long enough to properly enjoy food and conversation with an actual person. In the developed world we have reached the stage where we have so much food available that we are constantly worrying how we can stop ourselves from eating too much of it!
HOW WE EAT With the advent of fast food outlets and the constant bombardment of advertising, we have developed appetites for the sort of food that is contributing to the so called “obesity epidemic”, and health professionals are warning against the perils of a diet with too much sugar and without sufficient vegetables and fruit. Having lived long enough to have seen many of these changes, the Oral History Group felt it was in a position to share its experiences of food and eating in the past. Leslye remembered the thick stews with dumplings and heavy puddings which her mother served in an effort to fill her hungry family. “They were delicious,” she told us, “but we were all still hungry although I don’t remember anyone being fat.” Many of the group came from large families where money was not plentiful and mothers were adept at producing hearty meals out of very little. “I came from a family of seven children and my mother was widowed very early. “Breakfast was always bread and milk and you ate it up quickly in case someone else took it,” said Tom. “In the Depression we sometimes ate Weetbix and water for every meal,” said Bill. Vegetable gardens, chooks and possibly a cow made many people in the country self-sufficient, but children were expected to eat everything that was provided or remain at the table until every scrap was eaten up. We also seem to have consumed a lot of vegetables whether we liked them or not, and there was certainly no provision made for special children’s meals as we see today. It’s surprising how much fat we
consumed, a fact that would horrify dietitians today. “We had eggs fried in fat for breakfast,” said Keith, “and when they were cooked we would soak up the leftover fat in the pan with bread and eat that too.” Dessert was often bread and jam with cream either from the top of boiled milk or from the cow. There were also custard dishes and heavy steamed puddings to finish the meal. And the meal itself was quite formal compared to those eaten by many families today. Families were generally large and mealtime was when they all came together. “We were rostered as to who set the table,” said Pauline. “There were six kids in our family,” Keith told us, “and the two eldest sat either side of father while the two youngest sat next to our mother. “We were encouraged to talk about our day and what was happening in the world.” In most cases table manners were very strict. “Dinner was an occasion,” said Monica, “and Mother always changed from her working clothes.” Barb was the eldest of ten but remembers meal times as happy occasions where everything was homemade and mostly from what was grown in the garden. “We always said grace before the meal,” said Pat, “and asked permission to leave the table at the end.” Wartime brought rationing and mothers had to be particularly clever at managing a household where most foodstuffs were in short supply.
In fact, looking after a family was a fulltime job in those days before the laboursaving devices we have today. Mostly, especially in the country, we cooked on fuel stoves and a pot sitting at the back of the stove took the place of today’s slow cooker. Meals were kept hot in the oven or on a plate on the top of the stove. An ice chest or even a Coolgardie safe kept our food cool, although obviously it couldn’t be frozen for future use. The dishes which are expensive today, like lamb shanks and offal, were our daily fare mainly because they were so cheap. The surprising thing is that we rarely heard of children suffering from allergies, although we seem to have eaten anything we were offered. With the arrival of migrants from all over the world our tastes and ways of eating have changed enormously, and we all appreciate the wide range of food and dishes we now enjoy. Still, as with many changes it is not always for the better, and new problems have emerged like obesity and other eating disorders for which we now have to find an answer. When I was a child an old lady told me that when I grew up I wouldn’t have to cook any more as we would all be eating pills containing all the nourishment we would need. Hatches Vigilance around water, keep watch at all times Royal Life Saving is asking readers to be especially vigilant of children around the water this summer and to “Keep Watch at all times”. Our new research shows that 532 children aged four and under drowned in the past 19 years. It also shows that a child’s risk of drowning triples after their first birthday; 40 per cent of children were just one-year-old when they drowned. For every fatal drowning in this age group, eight children are admitted to hospital following a non-fatal drowning. Some will sustain life-long brain injuries. We know summer is when young children are most at risk. Swimming pools are the leading location for drowning among children, accounting for more than half of all deaths. The four things we recommend to prevent drowning are: • actively supervise children around water (supervise); • restrict children’s access to water (restrict); • teach children water safety skills (teach); •a nd learn how to respond in the case of an emergency (respond).
