Claudia Jerogin is not your average engineering student!

Effusive and outgoing, she is half-way through a project for Orange City Council on a subject that most people don’t even want to think about, let alone work on. Making the city’s sewage treatment system operate better!

Growing-up and schooled on Sydney’s leafy North Shore and with little experience of country living, the Colour City has proven even more friendly than she imagined.

“A lot of people said the locals would be welcoming and kind, but I was not aware how welcoming and kind they would be; I’ve been really surprised,” she said.

“The first week I knew I’d like it here, I went to a trivia night at the pub and people I didn’t know were so friendly and reached-out to say ‘hello’,” she added.

Her only previous experience of life west of the Mountains was, she said, a trip once to Dubbo for a 21st birthday party.

“I definitely was a bit scared; I went to school in Sydney (Wenona at North Sydney) and knew everyone and have a lot of contacts, and that’s where all my friends are,” she said.

“There are things I miss about the city, friends and things and I love the beach. But I live in a share-house in Marrickville (in Sydney’s inner west) and, when I run, it’s on concrete paths. Here I run on parks and grass, it’s much nicer,” she said.

In her Honours Year in Chemical Engineering at the University of Sydney, it was her interest in water and its central role in the environment that led to her circuitous route to the inner workings of Orange’s wastewater system.

“I did express an interest in water because it underpins everything and it seemed like an interesting thing to study,” she explained.

Her project involves using natural sugars, sucrose and glycerol, to reduce harmful nitrogen levels in wastewater which can lead to problems like toxic algal blooms. The six-month research project is part of the University’s Major Industry Project Placement Scholarship scheme (MIPPS).

Some friends and colleagues expressed surprise at her “earthy” choice of research project.

“Very much so, especially when I say I’m working at the sewage treatment plant, that’s not something a lot of people would sign-up for,” Claudia laughed.

“There were some jokes from friends about working in waste-water… my housemate in Sydney gave me a bottle of bodywash so I wouldn’t come back stinking, that was her joke,” Claudia smiled.

“There are 10 students in my group, and some are at start-ups in areas that may appear more innovative than Council. I thought, maybe, I’d have a more ‘exciting’ project but it’s important work that people do at Council. It does matter.

“It’s definitely not the most ‘glamorous’ work at a sewage treatment plant, but it is worthwhile,” she said.

While she intends returning to Sydney once her project ends, she has enjoyed her bush sojourn so much, she would consider a move to the country in the future.

“I’ve got a friend who’s doing medicine at Sydney, and they have to do a rural rotation, and I’m definitely going to recommend Orange!” she said.

When I was a little girl, I was always puzzled when my grandmother, Mary Cassin, referred to England as “home”.

Steve agreed that Biggles played a big role in defending the Empire, but he was also impressed by Robin Hood.

As far as I knew she had never been out of Australia. Indeed, she was born and grew up in the town of Mudgee and lived in Orange for much of her life.

Perhaps she was influenced when very young, by this piece which appeared in 'The Sydney Morning Herald' on 3rd March, 1885.

“Tuesday will be forever a red letter day in the history of New South Wales— the day in which this colony, not yet 100 years old, put forth the claims to be recognised as an integral part of the British Empire… yesterday the picked men of the colony embarked for the purpose of assisting the British in the Soudan…”

In 1900, Australians were once again called to the side of the British in the Boer War, but were beginning to feel a pride in their own native country.

AB Paterson, war correspondent, told of our troops guiding the British across a ford over the Madder River.

“A thing”, he wrote, “that may mean a small matter to Australians, but which would be a long way beyond the average English tommy.”

Less than twenty years later, our soldiers were still displaying a typical Australian attitude of cheerful defiance.

In the First World War, another correspondent, Charles Bean, described a scene on the dreadful killing fields of France: “Down the track came men, limping, in twos and threes, slowly.

They were wounded from the great battle, but held themselves with a stubborn erectness which said as plainly as in words: ‘Let no one pity me.'

Imperialism Once again we rallied to the cause in 1939.

In sombre tones, announcing our entry into World War II, RG Menzies said: “Great Britain has declared war on Germany and, as a result, Australia is also at war.”

Things were changing though, and, in 1941 the then-Prime Minister, John Curtin, revealed as much in his speech at a time when Australia faced invasion from the north.

“I make it quite clear that Australia looks to America, free of any pangs as to our traditional links or kinship to the United Kingdom.”

He added: “We know that Australia can go and Britain can still hold on.

We are therefore determined that Australia shall not go and we shall extend all our energies towards shaping a plan, with the United States as its keystone……to hold out until the tide of battle swings against the enemy.”

With all this in mind, I talked recently with a group of present-day Australians.

We were discussing the rather weighty topic of the changing attitudes to British Imperialism from the Nation’s birth to the 21st century. As usual, the

ages of the participants ranged from people in their 80s down to two in their early 20s.

All except the two youngest remembered celebrating Empire Day in their school-days. They conjured up images of huge bonfires, crackers, a half-day holiday from school and generally much merriment.

Did anyone remember that it was Queen Victoria’s birthday that they were celebrating?

The answer was a resounding ‘No! It was interesting, though, to talk about the influences that our British heritage had on most people's early lives.

The books we read, the history we learned, the poetry, nursery rhymes and games were all inherited from what was called 'The Mother Country.'

Bill described his childhood enjoyment of the boys’ magazines, “Triumph” and “Champion,” which were very much based in England.

Later, the detective stories of Dorothy L Sayers convinced him that he must sometime go and see these places that she described so vividly.

Joan read Enid Blyton and “Biggles” as a little girl.

Kathy had an English grandmother who offered her books about the “little princesses,” in which, Kathy confessed she was distinctly uninterested.

However, in 1954, the radiant young Queen Elizabeth stepped ashore in Sydney to the delight of huge crowds.

Ruby remembers people in the bush travelling hundreds of miles to Dubbo to catch a glimpse and wave a flag.

But, we were moving inexorably on and a few cracks were appearing in our relationship with the “Mother Country.”

In 1931 the British Empire had become the Commonwealth of Nations and 50 years later, in 1981, the Church of England officially became known as The Anglican Church of Australia.

We all agreed that, while we now felt ourselves to be entirely Australian, most still have sentimental links to our English heritage.

Sam still feels an affinity with England and acknowledges that it is part of our history. The face of Australia is rapidly changing and those with inherent ties to other countries are being absorbed into our population.

The group was optimistic in its conclusion.

“We have such a blessed country, with people who have enriched us”, said Jenny.

“I think we can listen to and respect others’ history. Ours is now to go forward together,” added Joan.

And Cassie, our youngest member summed up firmly: ”I feel completely Australian!”
