See more on We are living in strange time folks! I can’t remember a time when we’ve had something as serious as the coronavirus to contend with, certainly not in my lifetime.

Of course, those who lived through the great wars would say different. There’s a lot to unfold before we overcome this and I don’t want to dwell on what may or may not be ahead, I’d prefer to try and be an encourager and concentrate on what’s in our magazine this week, hopefully there’s plenty in here to bring a smile or two to your face.

Speaking of smiles, who better to put a smile on our faces than our kids? This week sees the second of our A Day at our School features and this week we visited Calare Public, and as you’ll see the kids had plenty to keep them happy and busy while we were there.

Make sure you check out Melise Coleman’s photos and words, it’ll make you feel good.

There seems to be an upsurge in interest for entering our competitions over recent weeks and that’s encouraging too. We have lots of people who enter regularly and over the years, we’ve handed out thousands and thousands of dollars’ worth of prizes thanks to some very loyal sponsors including Hogs Australia’s Steakhouse, M & J’s Butchery, Ashcroft’s Supa IGA and Newey’s Drive Thru Cleaners to name a few. Fundraising Feast PROVIDING WELCOME RELIEF FOR FARMERS — JONATHAN ROE —

With the 2020 Feast for Farmers just around the corner, Orange City Life caught up with Rotary Club of Orange Daybreak’s Stuart Smith, who has been helping distribute the raised funds to local drought-stricken communities.

“I think it is lifting everyone’s spirits,” said Stuart. “It is just a big positive thing for them, seeing that things are happening.”

Feast for Farmers is annual luncheon held during F.O.O.D Week, a partnership between Heifer Station and the Rotary Club of Orange Daybreak to raise money for our local farming communities who have been doing it though these past few years.

It began in 2016 with 85 people and raised $20,000. Last year, 300 people took part raising an incredible $42,000.

“And 100 per cent of the funds goes to the recipients, because there is no fees or charges from Rotary or Givit so it has been pretty effective,” said Stuart.

Over the past few months, Rotary Daybreak along with the not-for-profit agency Givit, have been distributing the funds by way of gift vouchers to help

those in need.

“The idea was to buy vouchers from local businesses such as hardware, servos, butchers, chemists, and supermarkets,” said Stuart, adding that this way the money would stay in the community and provide real benefit to both farmers and small businesses.

“So, for example, we have gone to a hardware store with $1000 and bought a stack of vouchers and then the local CWA did all the distribution, because that way they know who to see and who to give it to. It has been pretty effective and is a great exercise for our club.”

Feast for Farmers will return to Heifer Station on 28 March and Stuart said they are hoping to see a similarly generous result.

the big ‘Bull Paddock’ where we have the main function. There is an auction on the day and we raise a lot from that,” he said.

This year’s auction includes big ticket items such as an exclusive Sydney getaway donated by REX, a luxury homestay in Sydney, and a Spanish feast for up to 25 people from Chef Michael Manners.

Welcome rain may have fallen around the region, but that doesn’t mean the impact of the drought is over, said Stuart.

“This rain still hasn’t done a lot for the drought, it is one of the worst droughts in years it has been pretty tough,” he said. “An awful lot of people are still doing it tough.”

BRING BACK THE DAY OF REST! Of course, it’s quite fanciful in this day and age to suggest that we bring back Sunday as a day of rest. Older folk will know what I’m talking about but many of our younger generation probably have no concept of what Sundays were once like.

RUBY “I am 10 years old and I go to St Marys Primary School. I really like dancing and doing gymnastics, as well as drawing and painting. I am donating my hair on March 29, to the Variety Charity - Hair with Heart. It was a thing that popped into my head as one of my friends was diagnosed with cancer a couple of months ago.

I started thinking about it for weeks and I really wanted to do it, I was also inspired by a lot of people that I know who have

done the same.

On the day I will be donating 38cms of my hair, that’s pretty scary as I’ve only ever had a trim, I’ve been growing my hair since I was three years old. I know it’s going to people who need it and my hair will grow back so I am feeling happy that I can help them.

It costs around $5,000- $6,000 every year for families to buy a wig and it lasts about 1-2 years, I think that is a lot of money and

it’s not only for kids with cancer it can be other illnesses as well.

I have raised nearly $700, I think it’s amazing to be honest, my goal is to raise $5,000. I’m really proud of myself because I didn’t think I would make a decision like that in my life.”

It’s a stupid notion I know, and it will never happen, but I have to say that I think life would be better overall if we all still observed Sunday as a day of rest. When God created things, he factored in a day of rest and I for one believe he knew what he was doing. Even though God’s design for living is supported by Christians and God-fearing people right across the world, most humans have a less than fearful view of God and have always preferred to make their own rules for living. Today, we live with the consequences of some of those decisions and I think it’s fair to say that trying to live life at the pace we do today, day in day out, without a regular designated rest day is taking its toll.

for me, means I’m not making rash or impulsive decisions that I could regret. I’ve come to enjoy using this time to think about all manner of things, even things that may be months or years away such as what we may want to do when we eventually retire. The alternative to this is making impulsive decisions or decisions that haven’t been given sufficient thought. Wisdom is one of my favourite words and I believe true wisdom only happens when clear and reasonable thinking is applied, the type of thinking that can only happen when someone is relaxed and makes the time to process and think things through with a clear mind.

Oberon horse trainer, Leigh Cragg of ‘Burilda Park Equine’ has recently been selected to compete at ‘The Man from Snowy River Trainers Challenge’ at Corryong in Victoria in April.

eigh is one of just three trainers chosen from horsemen and women Australia wide and will demonstrate his skills in front of the 15,000 spectators that attend the event annually.

As a trainer of ‘off the track’ racehorses as well as quarter horses for cow horse competitions, the 32-year-old is looking forward to showcasing his passion for starting horses at the celebrated event.

Leigh said, “I was absolutely honoured to get the phone call that I’d been chosen for the event, so many trainers nominated so it was a total shock to me.”

Leigh and his wife Alexandria will head to the Victorian high country

to compete for the coveted title and prize purse.

Within the challenge, the trainers will select a young quarter horse that has only had limited handling before, from a yard of six, they will then have four days to handle and start this horse under saddle should they feel it appropriate.

Within the first three days the trainers must demonstrate their own program or method in communicating with young horses and on the final day they are judged on the reasoning behind their choices over the sessions and the progress of the horse that is under their guidance.

Leigh will have 2.5 hours per day to work with his chosen horse. There will be a half an hour mandatory break where Leigh can then chat with the crowd and discuss what he has been doing with the young horse.

This opportunity is a huge feat for Leigh and Alexandria who have been travelling the state teaching Leigh’s horsemanship program, while also facilitating horsemanship clinics and confidence boosting retreats.

At the end of the four-day process all of the horses will be auctioned off to the public and 100% the proceeds will go to supporting bush fire recovery.

The day to day of students and teacher alike has become a little brighter as this year Orange High School have updated their school bell system. What was once described as a traditional shreiky bell since time of memoriam, has now changed to upbeat fun music.

D

eputy Principal, Kristie Anderson explained, “The previous bell rings were bone rattling if you were sitting under it, it was a big shock and in other parts of the school you couldn’t hear them at all.

The reason we made the change was because we like to control our environment here, so it really supports the kids and tries to keep our culture really positive and happy, and also logistically we needed the kids to hear the bells.

Now we have this amazing system where we play a short burst of music, that music changes each time the ‘bell’ rings, we can select that music ourselves and the students are involved... sometimes, depending on who selects the music it’s probably a bit of a punishment,” Kristie laughed.

“We get a bit of 70s music when the teachers get to choose. Early on when the teachers were in control

we had a bit of ABBA coming through and ACDC which some kids were into, though the kids have very quickly taken ownership of this as we know music is really important to teenagers.

“It just created this really extraordinary moment between teachers and students, all of a sudden the music starts and you’ll see teachers busting into moves and kids doing the same, it’s a really nice interaction. It’s just a few seconds that creates this really nice moment, even if it’s just a bit of fun banter.”

School is supposed to be fun whilst you’re at it, not just preparing you for life after it.”

CEF celebrates the past as it looks to a BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR COUNTRY KIDS — JONATHAN ROE —

It all started around a kitchen table at Boorowa. It was the early 90s, the wool industry was in decline and Boorowa, like many other small country towns, had seen pastoral houses leave town and banks close their branches

“When we looked around the young men, in particularly, were drifting into the shearing sheds as roustabouts and weren’t really stretching their capacities in terms of further education,” said Nick Burton Taylor AM, Chair and Founder of the Country Education Foundation (CEF).

“So, we established a foundation to try and mentor and give some financial assistance to young school leavers, whether it was embarking on a trade or heading to university but heading to a career.”

The idea was a great success and soon other small surrounding communities followed their lead, to provide small grants raised through local fundraising to support their young school leavers.

“It was very successful; it bound the

communities’ aspirations for young people with the realisation that it was a bit tougher in the bush to find young people opportunities,” said Mr Burton Taylor.

“Anyone living in regional Australia would understand the joys of living in a regional area, but also some of the hardships. And educational opportunities have been one of them.

“They had to move away from home if they wanted to further their education, they had extra financial pressures, sometimes it was the first time they’d ever left home, they needed some sort of support structures, so we put those in place and it worked very well.”

Today, CEF oversees 44 local foundations and 456 volunteers across NSW, Queensland,

Last Wednesday (5 March) CEF celebrated the official opening of the new office which was attended by around 70 guests.

The building was purchased thanks to the incredible generosity of an anonymous donor.

“For a small charity like ourselves, this is a wonderful position to provide the surety of our staff and the 456 volunteers who make up our organisation. We work together from the grassroots up to boost further education in the bush,” said Mr Burton Taylor.

Guests at the opening, were welcomed with music from the Orange High School stage band and canapes from the school’s catering team.

Sometimes it can be quite emotional for people. It’s so satisfying to see them walk out of the studio feeling more confident than they have in years.

Orange pushes back date to start Level 6 water restrictions Orange City Council’s efforts to get through the drought are showing signs of success.

The Council’s CEO, David Waddell, has confirmed that the date when Level 6 could begin has now been pushed back for two weeks from 1 May to 15 May. “That decision to wind back the date when we’ll have to move to Level 6 could be taken today because of a number of factors,” CEO David Waddell said. “The residents of Orange are doing a fantastic job in cutting back their water use to their best ever levels. People using as little as 119 litres per person per day is unheard of. “We know how much water we have left in the dams, so we’re keeping a close eye on the balance between how much we’re using and how much we’re adding to storage.

Orange residents and visitors will benefit from competitive fares and more flight options as well as the onward connectivity through Qantas’ domestic and international network and partner airlines like Emirates and American Airlines. New milestone for rail overpass project The project of building a new rail overpass over the main western rail line at Orange has reached a milestone.

Nine 23-metre long girders have been gently lifted into position, closing the gap across the railway line. Work is expected to be completed on the $18.4 million project, that’s part of the Southern Feeder road project, in July this year.

PaulTIERNEY BEER AND TURKISH DELIGHTS If I’m stocking up for what lies ahead, I’ll tell you what I WON’T be filling my cupboards with, that’s for sure.

In the middle of our last decade, tales of doom and the impending end of the world were all the rage. One of the biggest was a cable TV series called ‘The Walking Dead’, where a disease saw humans turn into zombies, then go on rampages looking for normal humans to devour. Of course, there was no internet, no electricity, no comforts, it was like living in ‘Little House On The Prairie’ times again. All the unaffected humans battened down the hatches, raising their fences, arming themselves and stocking up on supplies. They would run the gauntlet under the cover of darkness to get to abandoned houses, grabbing cans of beans and soup, warm jackets, jerry cans of water and fuel, if they were lucky tins of freeze-dried coffee. But have a guess what they didn’t go for ? … yep, toilet paper.

In all the seasons and episodes of this (and the other) Zombie Apocalypse shows, never did we see the humansfacing-extinction grab a roll of sorbent as they looted an empty house or old servo. Torch batteries? Yep. Matches?

Sure. Just about anything in a can that had been preserved? Of Course. But something to well, you know, when the number two is done? Nope, not even once. Things got pretty serious on the zombie shows, with the regular humans shooting it out or fighting to the death in their attempts to grab supplies and stay alive. But they were fighting over bottles of gas, cans of corn and bags of flour, not double ply. Sheesh, what’s wrong with everybody?

GET RICH SLOWLY a ‘normal’ week ahead, (past the empty aisle of you know what, seriously?), and I got to thinking about what I’d actually grab if everything went to pieces. Well, maybe not the two minute nuke warning or the Zombies taking over, but the alert that said we had to lock ourselves away for a month or two. I had to laugh as I walked past four different types of cans of Baked Beans, which would probably be my number one. Not in a Warney kind-of way, but they’re a meal in themselves and I reckon I could hold out for a month on a diet of legumes. If we assume we’ll have no power, then I’ve got my big gas bottle, the top of the line esky and 6 bags of ice to last me at least the first week, rice and pasta as well as the sauces to go with them, and if I managed to grab a giant sack of flour I could make my own bread and pizza bases. If I’m stuck out here in Millthorpe, I’ve got the vege patch, the chooks, and a tank (now full ) of water, things would be ok. Of course, a month locked away without beer, coffee and chocolate would be worse than facing the zombies. So, whilst everyone else is in the other aisle stocking up on dunny paper, I’ll sneak down aisle 9 and grab every Turkish Delight they have, a few kilos of vacuum sealed coffee and then across to the grog shop for as much amber ale as they let me stick in the ute.

Just like Mick Dundee said in his famous movie when he first encountered a bidet … “It’s fer washin’ ya bum” … I’ll think I’ll get by at my place with no rolls of the white stuff, zombies or no zombies.

An Unforgettable Experience — MELISE COLEMAN —

You’ll remember a story from a few editions back on the ‘Orange Mums Running’ team taking on the Tarawera Ultra Marathon in New Zealand, well, they are back and proud to show off their awesome efforts.

W

hilst is was a challenging course, taking into consideration the elevation and volcanic sulphur-filled air, the atmosphere was a highlight for most. Alison Broughton explained, “The culture, the people, the scenery and the exceptional race volunteers it was just amazing.

When you sight that finish line you seem to find that extra grunt to run across the line.

It was such a celebration - of the long hard training hours, moving forward over several

hours, never giving up, trusting in your training and in your legs to get you home.

Finally, the medal is placed over your neck and you can stop running and be embraced in the arms of your support people, for us that was a team of 15 from Orange. What an event to experience together... it was unforgettable.”

Alison continued, “After the race we soaked in the New Zealand culture and spirit, beginning with whitewater rafting, hot springs and recovery spas, cool lake swims, a relaxing massage, cultural dance and food, definitely food! There were lots of chocolates and sweet treats to reward our

accomplishments. We were so very proud of our whole crew.”

“We love competing together and supporting each other, not just at races but in our daily/ weekly runs around Orange – whether it be stair repeats at Pinnacle, a hilly run at Emu Swamp, Canobolas and Kinross trail running, Elephant Park loops at Orange Runners, and various town courses we map out, we have each other’s backs.”

A massive congratulations to the entire team as everyone made it over that finish line and some participants even achieving personal bests on both distance and time. GO TEAM!

A parishioner went home and arrived back with watered down cherry brandy to the delight of one of the communicants who found it the best communion wine she had ever tasted.

According to research, mankind has been experimenting with mind altering drugs like opium, alcohol and magic mushrooms since prehistoric times.

The earliest evidence of alcoholic drink is estimated to be from 7,000 BC. Residues consisting of rice, honey and fermented grapes having been found in pottery shards in ancient villages in China.

DRUGS, TOBACCO AND ALCOHOL

Primitive pipes dating back to 2,000 BC have been uncovered in Argentina, although it is unclear whether they were used for smoking tobacco or other hallucinogenic plants.

Nevertheless, the use of tobacco has been traced to as early as 300 BC. With this knowledge at our fingertips, the Oral History Group launched its own investigation into these social issues which have had such an influence in our lives. We were fortunate to have Peter Smith, a well-known Orange pharmacist, to help us.

On the goldfields in the 1870s it was quite legal for doctors to prescribe laudanum for women, which contained opium, for hysteria. It remained readily available even without prescription until the 1920s.

In our childhoods the legal drugs of choice seem to have been Bex and Vincent’s APC powders and tablets. These contained aspirin, phenacetin and caffeine.

“I knew a drover in the back country who would take twelve Bex tablets in the morning,” Reg told us. “Of course, kidney failure got him in the end,” he added reflectively.

We’ll order now what we ordered then.

“These were mostly unattractive places lacking any warmth or welcome and generally shunned by the men.”

Peter added that when visiting the Singapore Cricket Club some years ago he saw a notice which read: WOMEN, CHILDREN and DOGS not allowed past this point.

Sometimes there were some other problems with alcohol.

John attended communion in a small country church when it was discovered there was no wine.

Rhyl’s husband was warned as a small boy never to drink the ginger beer his grandmother, a strict teetotaller, offered him. “It will blow your head off,” his father told him.

Peter recalled his apprenticeship days when the pharmacy where he worked in Bondi Junction traded on Sunday morning. “We sold tonic wines which were mostly port wine with a dash of vitamin B and a touch of iron. It was a great favourite,” he said.

Tobacco also played a big part in the young lives of the Oral History Group.

“I was in the Islands in the war and every third day we lined up to be given our ration of tobacco. I hate it now although I smoked for years,” said Tom. Smoking was considered not only safe but beneficial, doctors were said to recommend it, and you were even considered a bit odd if you didn’t smoke.

Much has changed since our youth, but the Oral History Group concluded that the majority of people today have not given up enjoying these things; they have just changed the method in which they do it.

As Peter Allen suggested in his song, everything old is new again, and we have been taking drugs, drinking alcohol and smoking tobacco almost since the world began.

The Oral History group meets on the third Monday of each month at Duntry League at 10 o’clock.

This World Glaucoma Week we would like to remind our readers of the importance of regular eye checks.

G

laucoma is one of the leading causes of avoidable blindness in Australia, but early detection can help halt the damage to you vision.

“Glaucoma is a disease that often can be undetected, if you don’t go for an eye test,” said Eyecare Orange optometrist Louisa Tan. Glaucoma does not present any noticeable symptoms in the early stages of the disease, said Louisa. But if left untreated, it leads to progressive and permanent damage to your vision.

“At the very late stage of the disease, it can

get to where people will notice, but at the beginning stages of it — which is the best time to actually treat it — it is not detectable by the person,” said Louisa.

“There is no cure, but what we can do is use treatment to slow down the progression of Glaucoma so that it doesn’t get to the very end stage where blindness is the end result.”

But if Glaucoma is detected and treated early, the outlook it good.

“When detected early it is usually very good, we can preserve their vision for years from the point of diagnosis early, but when it is late there’s not much we can do,” she said.

And the best way to detect Glaucoma early is to get regular eye tests.

“That’s why we always recommend that you get checked out regularly every two years,” said Louisa. Although anyone with a history of glaucoma in the family may need more frequent testing, “Nine in 10 Australians say that sight is most valued sense for them, but one in three Australians don’t remember having their eyes tested over the last two or three years, so that is an alarmingly large number,” said Louisa.

Mining may be one of the most male-dominated industries in Australia, but things have been changing at Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Valley Operations (Cadia).

“Over the past five years, we have developed a range of programs to support women in their return to the workforce and create an inclusive environment that provides flexibility to support the individual needs of each employee,” said Cadia Acting General Manager, Aaron Brannigan, marking International Women’s Day 2020.

Cadia’s Diversity and Inclusion Program, launched five years ago, aims to create a work culture that welcomes and values the diversity of employees, said Aaron.

For example, the Parents and Bubs program keeps employees on parental

area for nursing mothers to express, and last year opened a purpose-built lactation room. The facility was created in consultation with working mothers and midwives to provide a private place where women can express and store breastmilk.

The facility has provided women with more choices on when to return to work and the option to continue breastfeeding.

All part of Cadia’s commitment to creating an inclusive culture and providing equal opportunities for its wide range of employees, said Aaron.

leave in touch with the workforce while on leave. Once a quarter, employees on parental leave are invited to a morning tea where the Cadia Valley Operations General Manager provides an update on all things which have been happening at work while the parent has been away.

It is also an opportunity to connect with other parents, said Aaron.

“While the Parents and Bubs program has traditionally been utilised by females, our parental leave program is offered to both men and women and a number of our male employees who have opted to take

The Blayney Council have introduced two new categories all falling under the banner of a new brand ‘Sculptures by the Bush.’ A broad ‘Farm Art Challenge’ will allow for farmers with limited hay a chance to participate and the Scarecrow Competition will allow for residents with smaller residential proprieties a chance to get involved. The traditional Hay Bale Art Challenge will continue with residents across all of Blayney Shire encouraged to participate.

With the display period inclusive of the April School Holidays, the Sculptures by the Bush campaign will encourage visitors to the Blayney Shire. A digital map will be created of all registrations as well as places along the route encouraging tourists to stop for lunch, browse through local shops or visit local attractions in the Blayney Shire.

Blayney Shire Mayor, Scott Ferguson said, following the tremendous success of previous Hay Bale Art Challenges, the expanded event is expected to continue to grow in popularity and

support from local residents, businesses and school groups who see the event as a great way to showcase the picturesque country landscape and celebrate Blayney Shire’s traditional agricultural heritage.

“It’s estimated that previously more than 5,000 visitors and locals travelled to the area to see previous Blayney Hay Bale Art Challenges and I’m sure they will be surprised at the creative art displays, decorated hay bales and sculptures that are expected to pop up in paddocks from early April,” Cr Ferguson said.

“We would love to see residents working together towards creating routes between the villages by groups of neighbouring residents all getting involved together,” said Cr Ferguson.

Sculptures will be on display from Monday 6 April – Monday 27 April with registrations now open on the Blayney Shire Council website.

Entries close at midday on Thursday April 2.

COLOUR CITY DRAGONS TACKLE BEI LOON 8KM CHALLENGE

olour City Dragons participated in this month’s Bei Loon 8km Challenge around Scotland Island, Sydney.

It was the first time in five years that conditions were ideal to paddle around the Island rather than do 4km laps in Pittwater. The Colour City Dragons were among 30 different clubs to take part.

Pittwater came first with a time of 46.54, Canberra’s Komodo Dragons placed second with 48.27 and Nowra Water dragons placed third with a time of 49.07.

Colour City Dragons edged out Hawkesbury River Dragons with a respectable time of 59.33.

Club President David Ball said it was a fantastic lead up event to the marathon club members have been preparing to attend later this month.

“We are doing two-hour training sessions on Carcoar Dam in preparation for our 42 km marathon on the Derwent River, Tasmania called the Beachers, Bridges and Bays Marathon,” David said.

The club has had to relocate training sessions to Carcoar Dam due to the Blue Green Algae alert at Lake Canobolas “It is great our club is participating in so many events with fundraisers in Parkes, Forbes and the Nowra Fire Recovery Regatta Weekend also on the calendar.”

Inaugural Orange Chamber Music Festival set for April

A

Orange is well known as a food and wine destination, but the launch of a new festival could see it become just as synonymous with classical music.

s with many good ideas, this one began around a dinner table with friends.

“It was over a couple of cheese boards and good wines and we pretty much simultaneously came up with the idea that we should do a chamber music festival in Orange,” said Stephan Duwe, Violist with the acclaimed Acacia Quartet.

Stephan and his wife Lisa Stewart made Orange home in 2019 and are now the Quartet in Residence at the Orange Regional Conservatorium. Stephan and Lisa, along with

fellow newcomers to Orange Carmen Nieves and Jay Byrnes of the Nexus Saxophone Quartet, and Orange Regional Conservatorium teacher David Shaw have now launched the Orange Chamber Music Festival, which will bring together local and international artists for three days of chamber music in April.

The program includes performances by the Acacia Quartet, the Nexus Quartet, the Orange Regional Conservatorium Chamber Academy, and solo performances from guest artists saxophonist Niels Bijl and harpist Emily Granger.

“There’s nothing like this in Orange,”

said Stephan, and with the long-running Huntington Estate Music Festival in Mudgee coming to an end last year, he believes there is room to grow the Orange Chamber Music Festival into a significant annual event.

“The Huntington festival in Mudgee has been a massive chamber music festival... it has run for decades. So, we thought let’s do something like that especially as there is no other festival around here.

“At Mudgee people would book accommodation way ahead, so we think there is lot of potential here. We just need to get the word out, spread it as much as possible

and invite everybody!”

The program has been limited to three days for the inaugural festival but, if well supported, Stephan expects they will increase the number of events and invite more musicians in the coming years.

“We can grow it from here if it goes well.

We will keep doing it and we might add a day next time, we don’t want to go crazy at first, but there is potential,” said Stephan.

“Good music, good food and good wine — we think is a great combination!”

The Orange Chamber Music Festival will take place 16-18 April, 2020.

MEET THE MAKER

Fiona Schofield

As a teenager growing up in Forbes, Fiona Schofield always had her sights set on the fashion industry.

B

ut one year into her fashion design and illustration studies at the Whitehouse Institute in Sydney, she had an uncomfortable realisation.

“I got there and realised that I really didn’t like doing the clothes.

So, I had a bit of a crisis moment at the end of the first year and thought I don’t think I’ve really chosen the right thing,” said Fiona, who was eventually talked out of quitting by her parents.

“My parents had listened to me bang on about this being the only thing I wanted to do for so long that they said look go back, finish, see it out to the end and then if you still don’t love it at least you’ve finished it — and so I went back.”

It was then that the opportunity arose to take a millinery elective and Fiona quickly fell in love with the craft.

“It was a lightbulb moment for me, because the thing I didn’t love when I got to college was that you become a bit removed from the making… You would create the designs and then it would just go off and come back as a finished thing, whereas I’m very much a maker, I like to make things and so millinery

was a great marriage of that, because it was kind of like sculpture it was kind of art and fashion, there is a lot of hand work in it rather than working on machines and so it just ticked all the boxes for me.”

Completing her fashion studies, Fiona went to work for her lecturer, the well-known Sydney milliner Neil Grigg.

“I finished college on the Friday and started working full-time with him on the Monday and I worked with him for 6 years, it was great,” said Fiona.

“We used to have the Ansett Airline contract so we would make all the hats for the air hostesses… we used to service customers like David Jones and lots

“I always see it as a challenge when someone says, Hat’s don’t suit me; it is rare to find one that doesn’t suit them,” she said.

“It is about balancing out what is happening in your face and in your body proportions. Are you really

tall? Are you really short? All of those things play a part in whether it looks great or not. The people you see that look really fabulous in a hat, you don’t go, look at the lady in the hat or look at that guy in the hat. You go, Gosh, don’t they look fantastic! And isn’t their hat beautiful.

It’s that the overall look is seamlessly together, because they have all their balance and proportion right.

“I tweak each hat as I make it so that it suits the customer I’m making it for, it becomes very individualised and that way you get a hat that you look and feel fabulous in!”

Over 90 people enjoyed an evening of wine, dinning and art at Duntryleague on Saturday February 29th. The event was a fundraiser for the Inner Wheel Club of Orange. It included wine tasting, a 2-course dinner, an art auction and a silent auction. The funds raised was going towards cord blood research and KINI International Project in Kenya.

World Day of

Prayer Photos contributed

On Friday 6 March, 81 Christians from across Orange came together at the Salvation Army Church for the World Day of Prayer.

The country of focus this year was Zimbabwe, with some local folk from Zimbabwe attending.

The theme was “Rise! Take you mat & walk”.

A letter from Zimbabwe was read by Sehlahi Moyo and guest speaker was Martha Dennis.

The World Day of Prayer is a global ecumenical movement led by Christian women who welcome all to join in prayer and action for peace and justice. The Orange congregation joined with people in over 150 countries around the world, in 88 different languages, to pray for Zimbabwe. The

service was prepared in Zimbabwe by members of the World Day of Prayer committee.

An offering of $1,435 was raised for the Bible Society Project —Empowering Mothers of Children with a Disability. The program works to reduce the stigma and isolation of mothers of children with a disability in Zimbabwe. It’s about encouraging churches in Zimbabwe to be places of support, inclusion and community for children with disabilities and for their mothers.

Financial support is vital as The Bible Society aims to help 10,000 people live a full and flourishing life.

ON LOCAL GOVERNMENT 2019 Last week the Auditor-General for New South Wales, Margaret Crawford, released her report on the Local Government sector. The report focuses on key observations and findings from the 2018-19 financial audits of councils and joint organisations.

Unqualified audit opinions were issued on the financial statements for 134 councils and 11 joint organisations. The audit opinion for Bayside’s 2017-18 and 2018-19 financial statements were disclaimed. Three audits are still in progress and will be included in next year’s report.

The report highlights a number of areas where there has been improvement. There was a reduction in errors identified in council financial statements and high risk issues reported in audit management letters. More councils have audit, risk and improvement committees and internal audit functions. Risk management practices and fraud control systems have also improved.

The report also found that councils could do more to be better prepared for the new accounting standards, asset management practices could be strengthened, and information technology controls and cyber security management could be improved.

Local government in NSW is big business.

In 2019: Income $15.3 billion Expenditure $12.4 billion Assets $166.0 billion Liabilities $7.3 billion The Auditor-General of NSW became responsible for the audit of all NSW Councils for the year 2016/17. I have firsthand experience of the improvement that has been brought about by the change from local firms auditing councils to them being audited by the Auditor-General. There is now greater consistency in financial statements and the performance audits and Audit Management Letters are helping councils to improve their practices.

As well as auditing financial statements, the AG undertakes performance audits that examine a small number of specific topics across councils looking for opportunities to improve public-sector accountability, governance and administration. They also consider the risks and challenges to councils in the Local Government sector and how these may be addressed.

The 2019 report on financial audits highlights how councils can: •S trengthen the quality and timeliness of financial reporting • Improve governance and internal controls • Strengthen IT controls and cyber security management • Improve asset management practices Cyber security is an increasingly complex issue for all organisations as I know from my role as a director of a local incorporated association.

An auditor’s report provides an opinion on the validity and reliability of an organisation’s financial statements to give assurance to the owners, members and stakeholders of that organisation that the people who are managing the organisation on their behalf are presenting a true and fair

view of the results of their management.

In Australian society the word ‘hope’ can be a synonym for wishful thinking: “I hope to get a puppy for Christmas.” At other times there is some basis to substantiate one’s hope: “The weather report predicted rain tomorrow … I hope it happens.”

In terms of thinking about the afterlife, most people hope their moral standards and lack of criminal activity might help them to scrape through to whatever is on the other side. The general hope is that the life beyond, whatever form it might take, will be good.

We need to ask ourselves what evidence there is to support our hope? Or is this nothing more than a wish that all might come true?

In the Bible, hope takes on an entirely different meaning. In Paul’s letter to the Roman church he describes hope as something sure. The hope is salvation from sin, friendship with God and eternal life. This is seen as more than wishful thinking because it’s based on an historical event – the death and resurrection of Christ, who took upon himself what we deserved to give us a clean slate before God.

THUMBS DOWN to shop assistants who address me with ‘hun’, ‘darl’, ‘sweetie’ and the like... it makes me want to walk out instantly.

THUMBS UP to Harris Farm Markets for displaying a hand sanitiser. Thumbs down that you can’t reach it because of trolleys in front of it and that the sanitiser was empty after much effort to reach it. I reported it to two separate staff members. Let’s see if they fix it. Very important to have it full and accessible.

EDITOR: It’s worth keeping in mind we’re all coming to grips with how to deal with the Coronavirus, I think we should cut Harris Farm a little slack while they get this right. I’m sure Harris Farm will address this.

THUMBS UP to the couple who, at intermission in the Ian Moss concert, bought a box of Maltesers for the people sitting next to them. Well received indeed.

OCLife SPRINGFIELD TIME WARP Now a private home and not open to the public, Springfield is a symbol of the Cornish occupation of the Byng area, east of Orange. It was completed in 1854 and was the home of William Tom, a parson in the Wesleyan church and a land owner. It is a twostorey Georgian mansion with thick stone walls, a full length front veranda and an awning supported by white pillars. The house is positioned on a hill overlooking Sheep Station Creek and surrounded by mature gardens planted with European trees and shrubs.
