What beautiful, spring weather we had over the long weekend!

Great for getting out and exploring the district, but an inch or two of rain would have been the preferred outlook for most in the district.

Molong was buzzing on Monday morning with quite the crowd exploring the markets. It looked like stall holders were doing a busy trade — cold drink vendors in particular!

Wine week is fast approaching and sure to bring even more visitors to the District. We know the Orange region has developed a name for itself as a destination for great wine, but let’s not forget our other beverage producers. On Monday, I used the excuse of showing a visitor around to make a trip to Pioneer Brewing Co. I think it was when we hit the gravel road, after 20 minutes of driving through rolling hills, that my Sydney guest started to have grave doubts about us actually being anywhere in the vicinity of a brewery. But found it we did, and brewer Peter showed us around his substantial set up before we sat down for a little ‘quality control’ — an enjoyable afternoon and one I can heartily recommend!

We’ve barely heard any word from Bob, so we’re assuming he might be getting a handle on the whole holiday thing.

Keeping a Legacy Alive — BY MELISE COLEMAN —

Through immersing himself in family and culture, Sandon Gibbs-O'Neill of ‘Burruguu Art’ was inspired to un-earth an incredible talent of his, following in his well respected and highly regarded grandfathers’ footsteps.

reating Aboriginal Art using acrylics on canvas. Sandon incorporates aspects of contemporary and traditional Aboriginal art into his work.

You can also find his work painted on didgeridoos, emu eggs and murals across New South Wales, most of which can be found in Orange and Sydney.

“It wasn’t until I visited my Grandfather Tex Skuthorpe in 2014, who was living in Alice Springs, that I first gave it a go. It has only been this year that I have put time into actually learning my Nhunggabarra culture and really started to embrace art,” Sandon explained.

“It has always been a part of my family and I had seen other family members create pieces of art which I had always been drawn to, though my real passion comes from seeing how devoted my Grandfather was to our culture. Seeing him live each day through these values and teachings is something that inspired me to want to learn more and continue on his legacy. It makes me smile knowing that I can create an artwork that is allowing all people to engage positively with Aboriginal culture, and learn more about our unique culture.”

Sandon’s first exhibition was quite a special one for him, as it was alongside his Grandfather, Tex, back in 2016. Since then, Sandon has designed jerseys for football teams and has paintings

in a range of places across NSW and Victoriaincluding the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network and Mentone Grammar School. “I have been a part of two group exhibitions at the Corner Store Gallery, and I was selected as a finalist for the Gosford Regional Gallery Art Prize. It has been awesome to see my work appreciated along with artists across a range of styles and mediums.”

“It’s hard to put my artwork into words as it really is just something that comes to me and is inspired by the landscape around me and my culture. I think art is created because words aren’t able to show what artworks do. But I like to think it shows the uniqueness of Aboriginal culture and it is definitely detailed. It often represents a story or journey, so it isn’t only a piece of art but also includes a representation.”

“I hope my work encourages people to gain a sense of admiration for my culture and to realise that it’s not just a pretty painting; it is a very complex and clever teaching and learning tool. I hope that it challenges stereotypes, encourages the younger generation to respect Aboriginal culture and have the belief to put your artwork out there, whether it’s Aboriginal art or another style of art.”

“I have been lucky enough to facilitate workshops with a range of audiences including through the University of New South Wales ASPIRE programs which has allowed me to engage with the younger generation on a deeper level. I am also currently running corporate workshops in Sydney which shows how culture and its values can be used to assist businesses.”

“I’m proud of having belief in myself and my art.

It was challenging taking those steps towards being a fulltime artist and leaving my previous fulltime job. I hope that I can continue pursuing my dream of being an artist and show my daughter to believe in herself and encourage her to learn Nhunggabarra culture.”

My travels so far have taken me to Condobolin, Wagga, Blayney and surrounds, though I am on the lookout for many more. I understand with the terrible timing of what is going on, not many may want to celebrate their properties.

FROM 40 DEGREE TO NEGATIVE THREE

Let’s get serious, who has dreamt of living the Jillaroo lifestyle? I know I certainly have.

I

caught up with Hannah Burrows, a former Jillaroo who grew up in a small country town called Sutton Forest population of around 400 people. Hannah openly admits that she wasn’t one for school, though there was one subject that she thrived in, and there began her career in Agriculture. Growing up on a property herself, Hannah knew it was a lifestyle she wanted to live.

Hannah moved to Longreach, Queensland where she would Jillaroo for two years. “I did some research, I found that Longreach had Australian Agriculture College Corporation, so I was able to study and Jillaroo at the same time, I was taken to different properties each couple of months which was great because you got to understand all different types of enterprises.”

“A typical day involved waking up at 3.30am, breakfast served at 4.30am and there we would find out what needed to be done for the day. After breakfast we would head to the stables, saddle up the horses and head off... all of that before sun even started to rise. It was such a peaceful time, we didn’t really talk much at that time of the morning, we just took it in... I think it was due to the fact we couldn’t really see the extreme conditions and the damage the drought had brought; it was

peaceful and the best part of my day.”

“We’d go mustering for days on end in 30+ degree heat, and we camped a lot of the time,” Hannah continued, “I’ve never seen so much dust, the land was so dry it was unbelievable... the pictures really don’t give it justice as we didn’t have time to take lots of photos it was really life or death. It was a huge eye-opener.”

“In terms of a social life, my friends were the ones I worked with, well, they became family, we were all there to support each other. If ever I just needed a break, I would take my dog out on a bike and literally chill in a paddock underneath a tree and draw or read a book.”

Fast forward eight years later, Hannah moved to Orange in 2011, after deciding she needed a tree change, “I moved from 40-degree heat, to negative three in Orange,” Hannah laughed.

“I started university here at CSU. Now a qualified Teacher in Agriculture, I would love the opportunity to educate young kids in primary school about the importance of Agriculture, from the impacts of droughts to buying local produce in order to reduce food miles. The ultimate dream would be to have a travelling classroom which incorporates all aspects of paddock to plate”.

“I remember reading a study when I was

at university that 60% of kids from the city thought that cotton came from a sheep and vegetables came from a supermarket, that was a massive eye opener from me, growing up on a farm I didn’t think twice about where my food came from.”

“It’s our future, whether you live in the city or in the country you should know about the impacts of drought and the impact it has on our farmers, shops, and schools. Unless you live in these areas you aren’t aware of it, so by having a travelling classroom I would like to educate the people in the metropolitan areas.

“I think the biggest thing my Jillaroo’ing experience taught me was that it made me aware of the impact of drought, and still to this day... it's massive, it impacts us all and that’s why I’m extremely passionate about supporting local businesses.”

“I try to get myself involved in as many things as possible, in my spare time, I love to get creative! I love building things, designing things and baking/decorating. I also love playing Women’s AFL, I play for the Orange Tigers, they are all such supportive and great women to be around and I like that I’m able to take any stress/anger out on the field. The best part of my day however, is visiting my best mate, Mr Darcy, a four-year-old Moodle (Maltese x Toy Poodle).”

Benefit concert a boon for Alwyn — BY JONATHAN ROE —

A heart-warming afternoon of music and emotional tributes was enjoyed by a capacity audience at the Orange Regional Conservatorium for the Orange Male Voice Choir’s fundraiser for Alwyn Roweth.

Alwyn, a long-time member of the Orange Male Voice Choir was seriously injured on his farm at Errowanbang in April last year.

Although thrown clear of the quad bike he was driving, Alwyn sustained severe injuries and spent many months in Sydney in intensive care and in rehabilitation before returning to Orange for further treatment.

The concert raised almost $6,000 for Alwyn and his wife Gillian, with all proceeds from the entry donations, afternoon tea and an auctioned painting (donated by choir member

Denis Bradley) going to the cause “Audience members dug deep to support the couple and tributes flowed during the afternoon saluting the courage and tenacity of two fine people,” said Choir Vice President David Kennedy.

“Alwyn is working hard to regain some use of his limbs and his wife Gillian hopes that a fully equipped vehicle, which would facilitate loading of his special electric wheelchair, may one day become a possibility. The generosity of those at the concert lays the foundation for

Gillian’s vision!”

The fundraising concert presented “Songs from the Shows” with a cavalcade of numbers from Showboat to Chess, performed by the Orange Male Voice Choir combining with Cantar and led respectively by Barry Patterson and Gabe Ray. The afternoon also featured solo spots by outstanding young singers Vaughan Bienik and Will Munday. Audience members spoke enthusiastically of the program and its quality.

Allity Homes Ce — BY MELISE COLEMAN — The warming sound of laughter, the tunes of a grand piano and smell of delicious food could be heard and smelt from Calare and Gosling Creek Aged Care last week, as they hosted their annual ‘High Tea.’ Lifestyle Coordinator, Jo Beldham said, “It’s a great time for us to enjoy the bone china cups and saucers, cucumber sandwiches, hot food and an abundance of sweet delights.

All of the delicious food was cooked and prepared in our kitchen, and loved by residents, their friends and families, and the staff who worked tirelessly to make sure all had a great time.”

General Manager, James Bird added, “The day was essentially about connection, interaction and held a strong community focus. It was great to see so many friends and family members here to share the day with our residents.”

Just Snoring… or Sleep Apnoea?

By Dr Dr Paul Roth What is Sleep Apnoea?

Sleep apnoea is when someone's breathing temporarily pauses while they are deeply asleep.

The most common cause is when the soft tissues at the back of the throat (including the tongue and soft palate) flop backwards, blocking the flow of air. This is called apnoea (literally “no breath” in Latin).

The oxygen level in the blood starts to fall - but luckily, our brain can tell when that happens, and it sends a message to wake up from deep sleep. This is called an “arousal”, where our brain kicks itself out of deep and into light sleep, causing those obstructing soft tissues to tighten back up and move out of the way.

This unblocks the airway, allowing air to flow into our lungs again. Most people do not fully wake up during these episodes, so they usually aren’t aware this has happened.

What are the effects?

There’s a couple of ways this causes problems. One is that the brain needs deep sleep to restore normal functioning – when you wake feeling refreshed after a “good night’s sleep”, it usually means that you’ve spent a significant amount of time in deep, restorative sleep. Unfortunately, people with significant sleep apnoea can have tens – and sometimes hundreds –

arousals each night. This means their sleep has been fragmented, rather than restorative. They usually wake feeling lethargic and like they need to go back to sleep – despite having been in bed for the normal number of hours.

The reason for this is that, when the oxygen level drops during an apnoea event, the body activates its fight-or-flight response. Because it feels like its survival is threatened, this response causes adrenaline and other stress hormones to be released. These hormones are thought to be directly linked with these longer-term issues.

Often (but not always) you will be a loud snorer, or

Another symptom is excessive daytime sleepiness.

Certain physical characteristics may also predispose you to this sleep apnoea, like having a smaller lower being overweight or obese. Finally, taking sedating medications (like antihistamines or sleeping tablets) or drinking alcohol at night can also make sleep apnoea worse. The diagnosis of sleep apnoea is usually made after undergoing an overnight sleep study (wearing a device that measures your breathing effort and oxygen levels).

If significant sleep apnoea is diagnosed, there are several effective treatments. These can include CPAP machines, dental splints – a special mouthguard that can be fitted by your dentist to hold your lower jaw forward while you sleep, avoiding alcohol and losing weight.

Because of the multiple effects that sleep apnoea quality of life, it’s important that you talk to your doctor if you think that you may be affected.

Get good quality financial footwear There’s a good chance you have either read or know someone who has read The Barefoot Investor… it’s been the number one selling book in the country for the last couple of years. And it’s great!

The author, Scott Pape, has put in writing easyto-understand financial concepts and has done a great job of opening the eyes of Australians to the need to take financial decisions seriously.

Many people have read the book and made a few changes, many people have read the book then put it aside and done nothing. Both of those results are not great. And that’s where I find I add a lot of value for people… making sure what needs to get done, gets done!

It’s like joining a gym… the stats show that you get much better results working with a personal trainer than going it alone. They make sure you do what needs to be done… they push you to do it. You get started and as your fitness builds the exercise program changes and you

take it to the next level.

It’s the same with money. Get started, then build on it from there.

We are a country with the highest household debt levels in the world, our savings levels are dropping and people are retiring without enough money. Scott Pape’s book is a great step in changing that by improving people’s financial literacy. The next step is to make sure they get results by taking the action best suited to their needs.

Each person has their own unique financial situation and goals. We all have different levels of debt, tax, risk appetite and need for wealth creation and while many things are common, working with a financial coach can ensure the plan is right for the individual or household.

Double the love and double the hair FROM THE HODGE GIRLS — BY JONATHAN ROE — Three years ago, twins Neveah and Sienna Hodge — then just four years old — came home from preschool and told their parents they wanted to donate their hair to make a wig for a sick child.

“I don’t know where it came from,” said the twins’ mother Naomi Hodge. “They just came home from preschool one day and wanted to cut it for sick kids to make a wig…

So, we went with it.”

Unwavering from their goal, Neveah and Sienna have been growing their hair for the past three years. Now, finally, it is at a length ready to become a wig for someone suffering from a hair-loss condition such as Alopecia or cancer.

And the girls want to see it get to a sick child in time for Christmas.

“I want them to not be bullied, said sevenyear-old Neveah, as to why she was willing to cut off her ponytail. “I don’t want them to

go to school scared.”

In the lead up to the big chop on 16 November, the girls have decided to do some fundraising for the Cancer Council.

They will be holding a Halloween Disco on 2 November in the Café Connect Theatre Room, 3-5pm.

And on the day of the big chop itself, they will be holding a ‘Christmas Miracle Final Fundraiser’ with mini golf, face painting, a photo booth, sausage sizzle and other activities. The twins are also selling raffle tickets that will be drawn on the day.

The fundraiser and cutting of the girl’s hair will take place at the Orange City Bowling Club from 12-3.30pm, 16 November.

t’s the inventor’s curse, says Lindsay Wright, that ideas will just materialise whether you want them to or not.

And so it was, when Lindsay saw his father covered in oil after trying to do an oil change that an idea popped unexpectedly into his head.

“He had oil all over him and he was swearing and I thought how could I change the way people change oil?

I know, steel sumps... Magnets!” said Lindsay, who has spent the past six years perfecting his design for magnetic funnel that attaches to steel oil sumps, taking the mess out of an oil change.

Even thought many modern cars have oil pans made from nonferrous alloys, Lindsay said his research has shown him there are still millions of vehicles on the road with steel oil pans that would benefit from his magnetic funnel.

It is what has kept him pushing ahead these past six years.

“I’ve still got plenty of ideas,” said LIndsay, who wasn’t willing to publicly divulge any details. “I haven’t patented them yet, so no, I won’t say, but I have about three or four other ideas. They just come to me, I don’t got out looking for them…

“You ask any inventor and they’ll say ideas just come to them; they don’t go out to seek the invention, inventions just come!”.

The Top Button Dear Cold Chisel, your line from that song means a lot more nowadays.

If you’ve been reading these columns for nigh on ten years, then you’ll certainly know that I’m a little (ok, a lot) old school. Traditional. Set good standards and then maintain them. High bar. Big expectations.

Dotting i’s and crossing t’s. Modelling good behaviour. Look after the little things and the big things take care of themselves. I think you’ve got the picture.

I’m not holier than thou. And, using one of my favourite sayings at the moment, I certainly don’t think my poo smells sweeter than that of anyone else. However, as someone who is often standing out in front of impressionable young people, I do believe that I have a responsibility. I also believe it would be hypocritical to display one thing and expect something else from others.

I am happy for you to agree to disagree with me here, but I’ll stand firm on what I think. I’ll quote two famous sayings here as I relate my latest rambling … ‘clothes maketh the man’ and ‘cheap wine and a three-day growth’. Travelling down to the Knee of Syd for an appointment recently, we coupled it with an afternoon of shopping (yes, I know I’m supposed to ‘go local’ and we mostly do, but sometimes that just isn’t possible).

Anyway, the assistant who greeted us as we made our enquiry was instantly on three strikes – he’d kind-of lost the sale even before he’d opened his mouth. Strike one, he was unshaven.

I don’t mean he had the trendy George Michael carefully manicured iron-filings-on-the-chin look, he just appeared to have decided to not shave that day. Strike two, dirty shoes (that was really strike three, because I didn’t look at his shoes until I was peed off

about the other two things, but I’m saving the other one for dramatic effect). And then there’s strike three – the top button was undone with his tie just hanging in place. Ugh. Deal breaker.

Ok, call me narky. You know I’m both a mathematician and a left-hander, so you know how my brain works. I can’t change that part of my DNA, but I reckon what this guy put forward as part of his first impression is a snapshot of the ‘whatever’ society that we live in today. Here’s how my brain works when I see this sales guy as we make our enquiry … “Is that how you present yourself, expecting us to look past this introduction to you as you try to sell us your product?”. More importantly “How do your bosses accept this level of presentation from you? It reflects on them and the company as exactly the level that they accept.” I can hear some of you saying “Geez, get over it Paul, that doesn’t make him a bad salesman, and it doesn’t make the products he’s selling dodgy”. No, maybe it doesn’t, but it paints a picture for me about his care factor, his pride, his level of engagement, and certainly reveals a lot about the standards of those above him in the firm, if they’ll let him out on the sales floor to represent them whilst unshaven, with unpolished shoes and tie askew.

I’ll get off the soap box now. But, no deal with the sale, Mister. Whilst the top button undone and the scruffy face are issues enough in my mind, the fact that our standards have lowered to a level that firstly : sees nobody challenge this guy before he starts work, and secondly : that because he isn’t challenged, it allows him to think it’s OK to present himself like that.

He’ll turn up like that again tomorrow.

Unchallenged. Then he’ll get promoted to floor manager. Then those he’s in charge of will model their behaviour on him. Do some extrapolation …

CWA Happy to Keep Cool this Summer — BY MELISE COLEMAN — If you’ve been inside the CWA Hall over the Summer period, you’d be aware the heat can become quite overwhelming inside, despite their air cooling options. With the generosity of Roundabout Central West brand-new fans have been gifted to the hall ready to go for when the heat hits Orange.

CWA Orange Publicity Officer, Helen Karrasch explained, “We had a very hot period last summer and with the failure of our overhead fans, the hall was very, very hot. Roundabout have used the CWA hall on several occasions and have found it very convenient and economical for fundraising dinners. After hiring the hall during another warm period, they had offered to supply us with some fans to help out. We were certainly delighted with this and welcomed the donation.”

Janet Sprigge is a member of Roundabout as

well as a member of CWA, so with Janet’s help, the CWA Hall’s temperature will be bearable to those who visit.

Helen continued, “Last summer we didn’t have sufficient funds to repair or replace the overhead fans, with summer approaching, we have been busy and have now raised sufficient funds to install three new overhead fans. The addition of the portable fans will be used throughout the building to provide ideal cooling conditions for those who use the hall. We can’t thank Roundabout Central West enough.”

Roundabout Central West is a not for profit project driven small group who are dedicated to helping the community in any way that they can. Providing fans for use by Orange CWA in their Orange hall is just a small way they could make things a little more comfortable for the CWA ladies and other users of the premises.

This can often be an expensive practice, which is why orchardists in the Central West have been lobbying so hard to get this scheme extended to cover horticulture.

I want to pay tribute to Central Western vignerons and orchardists such Orange’s Guy Gaeta, who have led the way in ensuring this extension remained on the national agenda and that horticulture was included.

I caught up with Minister for Drought, David Littleproud, and Orange orchardists Michael and Guy Gaeta to discuss the extension of the On-Farm Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate during this year’s apple harvest

CHEAPER MEDICINE FOR OVER 500,000 PATIENTS Cheaper medicines have commenced for more than 500,000 patients from October 1, with price reductions for common scripts and new medicines added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), in some cases saving over $100,000 per patient.

Medicines to treat lung cancer, lymphoblastic and acute leukaemia, and nausea associated with chemotherapy are now available to patients on the PBS for just $40.30 per script, or $6.50 with a concession card.

A further $390 million in mandated price reductions across 175 medicine brands

will also flow through to patients, making medicines more affordable.

As an example, Tecentriq® and Avastin®, will be extended on the PBS to include first line treatment of patients with stage IV metastatic non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer.

Without PBS subsidy it would cost patients more than $11,400 per script (around 16 scripts per course of treatment); or more than $189,100 per course of treatment. An average of 755 patients per year (for six years) could benefit from this listing.

“You’re defying physics in a car,” says Dave Connell, when asked to describe what it is he likes about the extreme four-wheel-driving competitions he and Team Rockbull teammate Dennis Rhodes live for.

...It got to the point where we were doing more hours in the shed than we were with our day jobs!...

“The stuff you can climb! You could nose our car up to this wall and climb straight up it and most people think cars shouldn’t do that!”

Climbing near vertical rock faces in a car is not your average hobby, but Dennis and Dave have spent six year testing their (and their truck’s) mettle at the Tuff Truck and Ultimate Rock Sports competitions they take part in.

These competitions push vehicle and drivers to their limits as they navigate courses that can consist of gullies, piles of boulders, waterfalls, rock walls and pretty much any sort of obstacle that would stop your average car.

“It is pretty full on it,” said Dennis. “It is so hard on the car, you are climbing rocks the size of houses!”

“Yeah, you are driving straight up walls and rocks bigger than houses,” said Dave, who acts as navigator, guiding Dennis via headset as he navigates the track.

“There’s a lot of trust and faith is involved in it, because I’m outside the truck the whole time trying to tell him where to go, where to place his wheels, and sometimes I make a mistake and sometimes he’ll make a mistake, but then it is just, how do we get out of it?”

“I’ve done a front flip driving down a waterfall,” said Dennis, recalling one of those mistakes.

“We thought it was all good but then I think I hit a rock and the weight of the rear just came all the way over and it did a front flip

down this waterfall… That hurt! I think I’ve been over about six time now I suppose.”

Dennis and Dave first started competing six years ago in a rebuilt 1994 Suzuki Vitara, but 18 months ago, they decided it was time to upgrade their ride.

“It was buggered,” said Dennis. “Ah, the poor truck… I’d binned it that bad at Tuff Truck all the roof had caved in on it and we had to chop it all off put another roof on it. That poor car! The chassis was bent… it needed retiring.”

So, starting with two pieces of steel tube sitting on the floor of Dennis’s garage and a motor out of a Toyota Blizzard, they went to work. Dennis built a tube bender, bought a lathe, and from scratch they created their ultimate buggy.

“It took… I don’t know how many hours or how many dollars!” said Dave.

“A lot of hours and a lot of money… A lot of money!” said Dennis. “I don’t really know how much it has cost us here, but probably $30,000 in parts…”

“And you could double that for hours of labour if you were going to pay someone to do it,” said Dave. “It got to the point where we were doing more hours in the shed than we were with our day jobs! But towards the end a few more people jumped on board to get us over the line and help us out where we really needed it.”

“Great Western Auto Wreckers are our

main sponsor and they helped us out heaps and John Zelukovic Smash Repairs helped out heaps and then Mitch Sidman Custom Canopies helped us out with some alloy,” said Dennis.

But just days out from the 2019 Tuff Truck event (20-22 September), the new buggy still wasn’t ready.

“We took it out to the forest and did a little drive and it was playing up heaps! I got a phone call Sunday night saying bring it to Sydney by 8am Monday and we’ll put it on the dyno, so I drove to Sydney, they got it going, I brought it back, put some headlights in it and then loaded it on the trailer and went to the comp and it went flawlessly! amazing!” said Dennis Team Rockbull finished 12th out of 56 trucks over the weekend with their completely untested build.

“The most seat time we’d had was driving it onto the car trailer,” said Dave.

Now, with Tuff Truck behind them for another year, Dennis and Dave are getting ready for the next round of Ultimate Rock Sports at the end of this month. They came second in their class last year, but their dream is to break into the Top 10 at Tuff Truck.

“We’re still only rookies, but we have a lot to learn, getting to the pointy end of Tuff Truck would be nice,” said Dave.

“If we could get to the top ten at Tuff Truck… it would be nice,” said Dennis.

The 2019 Orange Wine Festival is just over a week away and there is a packed program that’s sure to include something for everyone.

Judging is already underway on the more than 300 entries to this year’s Orange Wine Show, with the public tasting of all the entries kicking of the festival program on Friday 18 October.

All the wines from the Orange Wine Show, including the trophy and medal winning wines, will be available for tasting at the Hotel Canobolas Ballroom — an opportunity to get a better understanding of the diverse wines that come from our region, says Orange360 general manager Caddie Marshall.

“The beauty of the Orange Wine Show, which is really the anchor event and why we have the wine festival, is the fact that people get to taste all the wines that were judged and be able to get an understanding of the diversity of those styles,” said Caddie.

“There are stations of all the Chardonnay, all the Rose, all the Merlots and all the Cabernets, so you can actually taste for yourself the difference in a vineyard at 600 metres above sea level as opposed to 800 metres and 1000 metres.”

Also getting the festival program started on the Friday is the signature “Pink Up” Wine in the Vines. The Orange Region Vignerons Association partnered with the McGrath foundation to put together this roving wine tasting and mini degustation, that is sure to be popular.

And that is just day one of the festival program.

“There are so many things to do from $15 through to under $100,” said Caddie. “You’ve got Vertical tastings at Slow Wine Co., you’ve got masterclasses, movie nights… there is something for every budget and palate. It is not just all about $150 lunches of dinners, that is certainly a part of it, but there are lots of free or low-cost events too.”

“There is so much,” said Orange Region Vignerons Association executive officer Charlotte Gundry.

“You can go onto the website, www.orangewinefestival.com. au and see the full program and sort by art exhibition, breakfast, cooking classes, dinner, lunch, markets, masterclasses, music, outdoor, picnic, tasting, tours — so there’s a picture of the whole festival in terms of the type of activities people can be part of.”

And the festival is not only about the wine, she said, but also the great food and local culture that makes Orange special.

“Our region is richer than just wine and without all those other facets we would be far less interesting!” said Charlotte.

“So, you don’t have to be a serious wine drinker to come and enjoy the Orange Wine Festival.”

The Orange Wine Festival runs from 18-27 October.

Orange’s Heifer Station proved to be a popular destination this October long weekend, with the cellar door recording their busiest weekend ever.

Over the winter, Heifer Station expanded their already substantial garden area, which made dealing with the weekend crowd much more manageable, said Sales and Operations Manager James Thomas.

“The weekend exceeded expectations! It was our biggest weekend ever in terms of customer numbers and our total transaction values,” said James.

“I think the expansion work we’ve done in the garden made it easy for us to facilitate a bigger crowd and we were able to accommodate people that wanted to do tastings at the cellar door and for those who wanted to have a cheese board and have a drink… it made it a lot easier for us to accommodate people with varying needs.”

In February next year, Heifer Station will be hosting A Day on the Green, a music festival that’s expected to draw a crowd of over 7,000 people.

James said the recent national announcement of the music festival coming to Orange has also lifted the profile of the cellar door.

“There was lot of buzz around the cellar door about the Day on the Green, I reckon 50 per cent of the people that came out there were asking where are we going to be and lots of questions trying to pry out of us who the acts are going to be,” he said.

The Day on the Green line-up for Orange was due to be announced yesterday morning.

‘Spring is the optimum time to deal with pests. In the Central West around Orange we see black ants, spiders, wasps and white ants in particular’ Craig said. ‘There is a misconception that we don’t have termites here, but we do, and I’ve seen some severe damage to properties from white ants.

Orange is also renowned for European wasps which are a danger to people, particularly children, as their stings are severely painful.’

‘There are different treatments for different pests, with general treatments for most and

more specific treatments for wasps where the entry to the nest has to be treated. If people have concerns about the chemicals we use, I am happy to discuss those with them. We have to treat the roof, but that doesn’t affect the inside of the house.’

‘Owners can take action to prevent pests like not allowing lawns and garden beds to encroach on the building slab, and clearing vegetation away from the edge of the slab regularly.’

‘Prevention is better than cure, and we are currently offering a pest inspection and treatment package with 20% off if they are both done at the same time. Inspections cost $245 and a general pest treatment costs between $195 to $245 depending on the type of pest and extent of the infestation.’

How to get the BEST out of OUR COUNCILS with AMANDA SPALDING

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – THE GENERAL MANAGER The role of General Manager of a Council in NSW is a difficult juggling act of keeping a majority of Councillors satisfied, as I know from my time as General Manager of Hay Shire Council where my contract was terminated immediately after I informed Council that I had made a Protected Interest Disclosure about corruption.

FUNCTIONS OF GENERAL MANAGER In NSW the role of the general manager of a council does not include the word ‘leadership’ and has the following functions: • to conduct the day-to-day management of the council in accordance with the strategic plans, programs, strategies and policies of the council, • to implement, without undue delay, lawful decisions of the council, • to advise the mayor and the governing body on the development and implementation of the strategic plans, programs, strategies and policies of the council, • to advise the mayor and the governing body on the appropriate form of community consultation on the strategic plans, programs, strategies and policies of the council and other matters related to the council, • to prepare, in consultation with the mayor and the governing body, the council’s community strategic plan, community engagement strategy, resourcing strategy, delivery program, operational plan and annual report, • to ensure that the mayor and other councillors are given timely information and advice and the administrative and professional support necessary to effectively discharge their functions, • to exercise any of the functions of the council that are delegated by the council to the general manager, • to appoint staff in accordance with the organisation structure and the resources approved by the council, • to direct and dismiss staff, • to implement the council’s workforce management strategy.

Other jurisdictions give more specific responsibilities as an employer including, in South Australia where the chief

executive officer must ensure - that employees are treated fairly and consistently, and are not subject to arbitrary or capricious decisions. I do quite like this description as I have seen general managers in NSW who enjoy making arbitrary or capricious decisions!!

PERFORMANCE REVIEW The role of the Mayor includes: in consultation with the councillors, to lead performance appraisals of the general manager.

As the CEO of Local Government Managers NSW I had a leadership role in the development of the General Manager Performance Management Guidelines.

Within 3 months of the commencement of the General Manager’s contract a performance agreement setting out the agreed criteria must be signed between the General Manager and Council.

Within 2 months of the performance agreement being signed the General Manager must prepare and submit to Council the detail of how the performance criteria are to be met and this will include performance indicators and standards.

The Guidelines for the Appointment and Oversight of General Managers includes the advice that: ‘As one of the general manager’s key responsibilities is to oversee the implementation of council’s strategic direction, it is important to align the general manager’s performance criteria to the goals contained in the council’s Community Strategic Plan, Resourcing Strategy, Delivery Program and Operational Plan.

The performance agreement should also include the general manager’s personal contribution to the council’s key achievements and the general manager’s core capabilities, including leadership qualities.’

The NSW Government mandates a Standard Contract of

Employment for all General Managers and Senior Staff in NSW local government. The performance of the General Manager must be reviewed at least annually against the agreed performance criteria for the position.

Council may also choose to undertake more frequent interim reviews of the General Manager’s performance. Reviews can either be undertaken by a Panel of Councillors or full Council and are conducted in confidential sessions. It is proper that performance reviews are conducted confidentially.

I personally believe that it is good practice to have a 360 degree review of the General Manager’s performance involving staff, Councillors and external stakeholders. At Hay Shire Council we used the Local Government NSW Capability Framework to establish the behaviours expected of the General Manager in leading the delivery of the community and Council values. Then we asked a random sample of staff; all Councillors, and agreed external stakeholders to complete a questionnaire for the General Manager’s performance review.

As we know, councils are required to be transparent, and decision-makers are to be accountable for decisions and omissions. I wrote in a previous column about how our local councils could improve their accountability to the community by making reports on their performance more accessible, as feedback is an important part of accountability. Making the performance criteria for the General Manager public and using the kind of 360 degree review I have described here, could also increase the level of trust between Council and the community.

Words of Wisdom with Melise Coleman This week I caught up with the wonderful Joan Cox, “I worked very hard and I always had money because of that, if there was any overtime, I was the one who got it. Times were tough.”

Where and when were you born? I was born in Neville (a little place the other side of Blayney.. a very little place) in 1925.

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned in life? To persevere, and don’t be too hard on people.

What is your favourite childhood memory? There wasn’t much going on in Neville, I used to love going to school. I loved knowing things, I was a very good scholar, I always got good marks.

I can remember my father borrowing a horse and sulky to go into Carcoar, to get food.. the depression was so bad.

What life advice would you pass along to your grandchildren? Be honest and be kind.

What could you tell me that I would be surprised to learn about you? I served in the Airforce during the war. I was 17 years old when I first went in.

I was a site mechanic, I trained in Sydney, Melbourne and Narromine.

Was it a strange thing back then for a

woman to be a mechanic? I s’pose it was a bit, but this was the second highest ranking. I went up in test flights, I even took the controls at one time, it was great, I loved it.

Just being up there and being free, accomplishing something.

What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a school teacher, I couldn’t because Neville was only a little school and I couldn’t go to high school because there was no high school in Blayney then. I can still hear Mr Curtis pleading with my Mum to let me come up to Orange to do high school. We couldn’t really afford it, we were pretty poor in those days.

What was your first job? I had a lot of jobs, I was at Bloomfield for 40 odd years as a nurse... I suppose the Airforce, I loved it. It wasn’t something I ever really wanted to do, we went through several tests and they decided I would make a good mechanic, so that was that.

What are you most proud of? I’m very proud of my needlework, just about

What did you get up to when you were young? We didn’t have many toys, very little in the way of toys... I did have one that I remember. I did quite a lot of hopscotch. I was the only girl in my family so I had to entertain myself.

Who is the person who influenced your life the most? Why? My Father, my parents were both very strict... but my Father was someone I could always depend on, he always knew the right thing, you know? He made sure we did the right thing, I had four brothers and I know things were very hairy at times *laughs* we kept him busy.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun now? My needle work, I’ve done a lot of cut-out embroidery and knitting.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun now? I like to listen to music, and I enjoy watching live music, I also love to read.

Unbelievable News Nearly 2000 years ago people were running around claiming that someone had risen from the dead never to die again. Many people responded the same way people do today. Dead people don’t rise. It’s ridiculous.

One of the people claiming that Jesus rose from the dead was a man called Paul who went all around the Mediterranean spreading the news.

This news brought such a reaction that he was arrested and tried in a Roman court for the disturbance this news had created. This is part of his response: “What I am saying is true and

reasonable. The king is familiar with these things ... I am convinced none of this has escaped his notice, because it was not done in a corner.”

Earlier on in his defence he said this: “Why should any of you consider it incredible that God raises the dead?”

Resurrection only seems impossible IF you rule God out of the picture. If you accept, based on creation, that God can create life from dust, then the resurrection of Jesus is more than just reasonable. You would expect it to happen.
