Two days of snowfalls last weekend, not the typical one, kept most of us inside and near our heaters and TV’s, and that despite the beauty outside.

We do love our snow, but it does disrupt things somewhat, the local farmers’ market being just one event to suffer. On the other hand, can you imagine how many photos must have been taken over the two days? My wife went happy snapping and sent her work to all parts of the country for family and friends to see. If a lot of people did the same thing, you can imagine the publicity Orange received as a result.

It’s another great issue of OC Life you have in your hands and once again there are some uplifting stories in here about people doing some great and interesting things. I hope you enjoy what my writers have put together for you this week.

There’s also a story on Homelessness. There’s been quite a lot of publicity surrounding homelessness over the last week or two and I found that interesting because just a week or so earlier, I had asked local journalist David Dixon to research and write a story for my National Life website where I was hoping to help further the efforts of all those people working to reduce or eliminate homelessness. David’s comprehensive story is now on National Life, but I thought a few extracts would also make for helpful reading in OC Life.

Any time a dog or cat, any animal in need, finds a loving home, it’s special. It’s special people that are usually behind the scenes orchestrating the re-homing, who never ask for any recognition. year and a half ago, animal lover, Jasmine Smart became one of ‘those people’ as she started her own rescue called Central West Animals Assistance, and to her credit, with a small team they had 40 successful adoptions.

As you can imagine, the cost of running a rescue yourself would be huge, this led Jasmine to seek the assistance of the Animal Welfare League (AWL).

Now President of the Animal Welfare League - Orange Branch, Jasmine explained, “We are now part of the AWL banner but remain purely independent, so we rely on community support for donations of products and money to survive.

“We needed a little bit more ‘oomph’ and support from a bigger organisation, AWL do de-sexing programs and in the last six months head office has spent about $30,000 in free de-sexing and vaccinations programs in Orange, so, that I wouldn’t be able to do by myself.”

“It helps you be able to focus on the day to day needs rather than having to worry about the other stuff. The usage of these funds is predominantly vet work (as all animals who are adopted out have full vet work done beforehand), supplies, toys and crates.”

“It all began with a Facebook post, just gaining interest, asking who would like to be part of this.. Now we have close to 100 volunteers, we’ve re-homed close to 200 animals since September last year, not to mention the animals re-homed before that.”

“I didn’t think it would get this big, but it has, and it’s overwhelming, it’s so great. The change that you see in the public, changing their mindsets, and linking the like-minded people together so we can create more of a difference. One person by themselves, I mean I can do a lot by myself, but it’s nothing compared to a whole group of people joining in and helping out. We are a close-knit group of animal

lovers, passionate about animal welfare and dedicated to saving animals.”

When I caught up with the AWL Orange Branch, they were hosting a fundraiser at St George Bank. “St George is one of the many businesses that support us and giving us the opportunity to raise money. The staff have always been there to support us, and we are so grateful. Events like this give us the opportunity to showcase our merchandise as well.”

St George Orange Branch Manager, Brendan Healy said “St George is all around people helping people and getting involved in the community, the Animal Welfare League do some fantastic work providing people with animals and rescuing animals as well, so for us it’s just about getting involved and doing what we can to help out.”

Jasmine continued, “We would also like to thank the Summer Street Vet, they have been with us from the get-go, and have supported us ever since, it’s really good to have that relationship with local businesses.”

The most noticeable attribute I saw from Jasmine was her caring nature and ability to put her hand up and say ‘I’m happy to work with others’, “I think it’s wonderful when you work with other rescues, like Blossoms and Best Friends Forever, the Pound, we can help each other and help our four legged friends, because at the end of the day, that’s what we exist to do.”

“Our group is blessed with volunteers in many types of lifestyle/ employment roles and industries such as; professional behaviourists, stay at home mums, vet nurses, administration staff, marketing/ sales, healthcare and many more. Our experience as a group gives us the opportunity to connect with local residents and do more for animals in our community.

A large portion of our rescues are surrenders from the public, people who are just down on their luck and need our help. One thing we want people to know is, the pound is not the only option, sometimes we do

have a waiting list, but we are trying to change that mindset, we are here to help, come to us, there is another option.”

“Our branch is now an approved seller of the ‘Friendly Dog Collars’ range. As Orange residents and especially dog owners are aware, dog attacks have become a common issue in Orange. In order for us to educate the public on appropriate actions and respecting dog’s boundaries, we have chosen to become a supplier of the range with the hope of improving dog behaviour issues and incidents in our community.” For order enquiries, people can contact jasminesmart@ awlnsw.com.au or phone 0474 986 937.

Animal Welfare League- Orange branch service towns throughout the Central West NSW (focusing on Orange, Bathurst and Dubbo), and are currently assisting with dog, cat and equine rescue.

NOT EVERYTHING IS BAD FOR YOU

TAYLAH “I’ve grown up with cattle, my Dad started when he was around 20 and always continued through. My brother has a stud and so do my parents, We breed Red Angus and Simmentals.

They are always like a second best friend to me, they are always there, they don’t always listen but you can still talk to them.

I’ve been showing competitively since I was seven years old. We went to Sydney Show this

year and we didn’t go too bad. I went there with school as well, I took my steer there and managed to get a silver medal.

The furthest I’ve travelled for a show would be to South Australia, to a show called Round Up. Round Up is for 8-25-year olds, when it was in Mount Gambier in 2017, I got Champion Peewee Parador and Reserve Champion Herdsperson.

This year we went to ‘Armidale RoundUp’ and I managed to get Champion Junior Parador, Champion Herdsperson, and I got the E.J Angus Award – it’s an encouragement award and an award for being respectful for everyone and encouraging and helping everyone.

I hope to continue showing them and continue what my family has bred and have my own stud one day.”

In last week’s edition, our OC Life columnist Paul Tierney voiced his frustration at the seemingly flip-flopping nature of scientific opinion, especially when it comes to topics like health and diet.

Like Paul — and I imagine most of you — I too regularly see stories about some new study that warns us against consuming one thing or another only to see it proclaimed as a ‘superfood’ the very next week.

It is no wonder that this leads people to throw their hands in the air and exclaim, “They say everything is bad for you!”

But it is unfortunate as I feel it leads to a casual dismissal of science and a mistrust of experts.

This may seem like nit-picking given that Paul’s column was written as a bit of entertainment, but I felt it only perpetuates this mistrust and science denialism, so I couldn’t let it pass without making a few points.

First of all, people often come to this conclusion because they mistake the reporting of science for the science itself.

Good science reporting is, sadly, hard to come by and most journalists don’t have the science background to really dissect a scientific paper. Instead, they rely on the press release, which too could have been written by a University’s communication’s officer who is also no expert.

Too often you see some eye-catching headline but then read further to discover that it is blatantly untrue or simply a throwaway quote or off-hand speculation not supported by that particular study.

Another thing often overlooked by journalists and the general public is that not all scientific studies are created equal: There is definitely bad science out there as well as studies done with financial or ideological motivations.

And sadly, there are no shortage of

poor-quality journals willing (or paid) to publish bad science. These journals may have legitimate sounding names and get their press releases picked up by news outlets that love a snappy headline even though the science is bad or downright fraudulent.

And even among good peer reviewed studies, the quality of the study will vary. Diet and health are notoriously difficult areas to explore because you are dealing with people and it is almost impossible to control all the variables involved. A lot of dietary studies are forced to rely on self-reporting by subjects which is famously unreliable.

Good science studies must also be repeatable. The results of one study can be interesting but are essentially meaningless unless the same result can be shown again and again.

From hypothesis to early results to sound scientific consensus takes time, and there are people who exploit the fuzzy edges of scientific knowledge for profit, which further confuses things.

Companies will jump on the results of one early study simply to sell their product, even though there is no real consensus. So when it is later shown to not be that Next Big Thing people exclaim, ‘Make up your mind!’ But the truth is the science was never settled.

I believe this attitude of “They say everything is bad for you!” is simply a lack of understanding on how science works and it unfortunately leads people to doubt good science. Look around you and see the widespread denial of the scientific consensus on climate change, not to mention anti-vaxxers and — even more unbelievably! — the growing number of Flat Earthers!

There is no easy answer to this, but better science reporting would be a good start. In fact, a little more science literacy and critical thinking would be good for everyone.

BY MELISE COLEMAN The Orange Eisteddfod kicked off last week and it kicked off with a bang. We caught the action of the under 9’s Speech and Drama section as well as the 8 years and under Demi - Character Solo and 9 & 10 Years Modern Expressive Solo section.

A special moment for the Eisteddfod over the weekend was three generations of volunteers gave their time to help out. Mum - Shirley Lamont, Daughter - Annette Wong and Granddaughter - Madison Wong were all enjoying their time and ensured it was all about being a helping hand and giving back to the community they have been involved with for so long.

Annette has been volunteering for 8-10 years, and before that was heavily involved as a supportive parent. This is the first year for Madison and Shirley as volunteers although Madison has competed in the Eisteddfod from the age of five years old, she is now a proud speech, drama and dance teacher.

Anonymous donor buys new home for education charity

Being generous is something that many Australians are good at, but sometimes we hear of someone doing something really special. This is one of those stories.

A large anonymous donation to the Country Education Foundation of Australia has allowed them to buy a new national office.

The remarkable donation has meant the education charity could purchase outright, a small business property here in Orange to house the organisation’s head office team.

“We are profoundly grateful to our anonymous supporter who shares our values and aspirations for young Australians, in furthering their

education with all the challenges facing country communities,” said CEF chairman Nick Burton Taylor.

“Investing in our future allows us to invest in theirs and helps secure the viability of smaller country communities.”

Country Education Foundation of Australia was established 26 years ago in Boorowa, NSW by the Burton Taylor family. It was created to financially support young rural and regional Australian

students who wish to further their education.

Grants are given to help buy textbooks and laptops for uni students, purchase tools and equipment for apprentices or assists people relocate to take up career opportunities.

The charity has supported over 580 students this year, and more than 5000 young people to date.

The formal Country Education Foundation of Australia head office launch will take place in October 2019.

NAME: Kurt Stephens Kurt is an enthusiastic Year 12 student who demonstrates what it means to share the journey by being a team player. He contributes to a large range of school and community based initiatives.

Kurt believes that it is crucial for him to uphold his values in every aspect of his life which can be seen through his leadership as Vice Captain, immersion in the school’s Sri Lankan Mission Team and his contributions to the schools Youth Mission and SRC Teams. Participation in the UN Youth Negotiations Competition, Evatt Diplomacy Competition, State Semifinals and NSW State Conferences have helped cultivate Kurt’s political awareness.

Kurt is a principled and compassionate student who aspires to make himself and his family proud, to enjoy his last term of school and to continue his studies at University.

Motherhood can be a little isolating and scary, especially if you don’t have a Mum tribe to turn to. 24 year old, first time Mum, Sarah Farrell has created a raw, open, honest and some-what comforting blog about her experiences with birth and her beautiful four month old, daughter Eevie.

The blog, aptly named ‘Raising Eevie’ shares Sarah’s experiences from pre-birth to everything her little bundle of joy is throwing her way now.

“When I had Eevie, I recorded everything and when I was in labour, I got my midwife to give me all of the documentation, so I had a record of everything.

I wrote it down and sent it to my friend and she thought it was really interesting, so, I thought maybe I will make a blog and blog it, at first it was just for us (the family). I thought it would be great if there’s anything I’ve forgotten, I can go back and read about it happening in her life and when she

The Orange Uniting Church are hoping locals will back their bid to replace the aging children’s playground on their community green.

Built nearly 30 years ago, the popular playground in the heart of the CBD is in desperate need of replacing and the project is now one of 41 across the Orange electorate hoping to win funding through My Community Projects. Public voting is being used to determine which projects will receive funding.

“We are really pleased to be selected as an eligible project and we would really like to see this very valuable place in the middle of the CBD improved,” said Reverend Andrew Cunningham.

“There is no other playground right in the CBD like this. While it is owned and maintained by the church, it is a community playground, available to everyone and we would really like to see this whole space used more. It a safe quiet place for kids to play, but it needs to be replaced.”

Replacing the playground is going to cost about $82,000. If you think it is worth funding visit mycommunityproject.service. nsw.gov.au to cast your vote or to have your say on any of the other worthy projects in contention.

Voting closes midnight 15 August.

Solving homelessness

....YOUTH HOMELESSNESS IS ONE OF THE LARGEST GROUPS OF HOMELESS IN AUSTRALIA...

H

omelessness, it’s a word we hear used a lot today, and for many of us, we know exactly what it is and we have no trouble bringing the typical image of someone sleeping on a park bench to mind when we give the word more than a casual thought. However, should we be taking the word more seriously, should we be trying to understand what causes someone to be “homeless”, should we be doing more to understand how homelessness looks and feels for someone faced with it, and then, should we be doing more to address it? Personally, I think the answer to all these questions is yes!

Local journalist David Dixon has just researched and written a story for my National Life website and it’s both excellent and thought-provoking and I’d like to use some short extracts from his story for OC Life readers. I think you may find some of the information very disturbing, but certainly treatable. I’d then like to offer an opinion piece on what I believe we, as a society could do, if we had a mind to seriously tackle the triggers that create homelessness.

David Dixon writes: Living homeless in Australia can be a joyless daily grind where you seem invisible to the rest of society; say those who have experienced its grim reality first-hand.

“You constantly struggle because of the lack of not having somewhere to go, it’s as simple

as that,” said one long-term homeless man in the NSW regional city of Orange where homelessness is described as an “unseen” problem.

“It causes a lot of friction; it’s a day-to-day battle where you wake-up and say, ‘how am I going to survive today?’,” another local homeless man said.

In the ABS Census for 2016; 116,427 people were counted as being homeless on Census night. This means that the rate of homelessness (which takes into account population density) is 50 out of every 10,000 people — up five per cent from the 48 persons in 2011, and up on the 45 persons in 2006.

Most people think of homelessness in the classic police drama stereotype of people “sleeping rough” in alleyways and under bridges, but in Australia, “sleeping out” only accounts for about seven per cent of homelessness.

Under the ABS definition, when a person does not have suitable accommodation alternatives, they are considered homeless if their current living arrangement: • is in a dwelling that is inadequate; or • has no tenure, or if their initial tenure is short and not extendable; or • does not allow them to have control of, and access to space for social relations.

Digby Hughes from the peak body for homeless services in NSW; Homelessness NSW says that there will always be people who will become homeless, for reasons of domestic violence, dysfunctional family life, or alcohol, drug and mental health issues.

“The first thing is to get them a home, a unit, or a house. This gives people security; you can then wrap-around issues to do with mental health, drug and alcohol dependency,” he said.

“To try and believe that we can work with problems of addiction before fixing their housing issues is a nonsense,” Digby believes.

He said that while it would take “a few billion” to overcome the problem in NSW, the money would be well spent. “The NSW Government is spending $250 million a year on the crisis, health costs, jail costs, lost human capital,” he said.

“We surveyed 500 people rough sleeping.

And they had recorded 9200 interactions with the police in the prior six months; that’s a lot of interactions.

“This makes for a whole range of add-on costs. We as a country lose their productivity while they have a loss of their lives, of their opportunities,’ Digby said.

Youth homelessness is one of the largest groups of homeless in Australia.

Major groups at risk of homelessness include women and children escaping domestic violence; the unemployed, former prisoners, and those with mental health issues.

“The first thing they need is a safe bed; access to housing is a central issue. If you don’t have a house, you don’t have hygiene, you don’t have the chance to get a job, to make the important contacts that help you get on with your life,” says Narelle Stocks from Bathurst Veritas House.

Homelessness is like so many other problems, it’s never going to go away and it certainly will never be completely eliminated.

However, like so many other problems, we can fiddle around treating the branches or we can get to the root of the problem and start treating it from there. If we do that and do that well, we will greatly reduce the number of people who are contending with homelessness and the number likely to, if we don’t.

Having read David Dixon’s story mentioned in Understanding Homelessness and being aware of the constant media publicity about what’s being done or wanted to be done to address homelessness, I can’t help but think we’re investing too much in treating the branches and not enough on treating the root of the problem.

If you read what is being said by the experts in David’s story, then think that through a bit further, it seems pretty obvious that the better and more secure a person feels, the less likelihood they’ll end up homeless. For me, that says if a person has a job and a secure roof over their head, they will be far less likely to end up among the homeless statistics.

That said, there seems to be a lot of activity to establish accommodation for homeless people with a number of organisations working towards providing more accommodation facilities. That may address the roof over their head issue, but it does little to address the issues of feeling good about themselves and also feeling secure, something that only having a steady job can provide. If people have enough money to pay their way, many of the other issues that trigger homelessness will disappear. In David Dixon’s story, Digby Hughes from Homelessness NSW made it clear that having a secure roof over one’s head should be a first priority, then other issues like mental health could be better addressed after that. He said having no secure roof over your head would likely cause most mental health issues among homeless people, not the other way around.

So, what is the answer?

Of course, the subject is a very complex one and like so many things today, people with far more credentials than me will come up with all manner of theories and solutions but for me, the answer is pretty straight-forward, how we get there is the difficult bit.

The key to this problem, as with so many others, is having a job. Anyone with half a brain knows that if more people had a job, that would solve many of society’s problems, including homelessness.

No job leads to welfare, leads to not enough money to live, leads to relationship problems, leads to no self-esteem, leads to crime or conflict, leads to homelessness, mental health issues, domestic violence, family breakdowns and so on.

Has anyone given any thought to the possibility of creating a scheme where appropriate homeless people are offered

employment to help build suitable accommodation for what they need? Similar to Work for the Dole but more Work for a Home. Surely, a smart government could think a simple idea like that through, then come up with a means of achieving it. Is that type of thinking too far out there?

t was the 17th of June 1990 that 17-year-old Uta Pohlschmidt arrived in Orange for the first time as a young exchange student from Germany.

Living with the Cummins Family, Uta spent just ten weeks attending Orange High School, but the impact of that trip has lasted three decades.

“We’ve stayed friends because of the exchange program,” said Kathy Cummins, who, because of Uta’s visit, was inspired to herself, go experience life in another country.

“I applied to go back to Germany on the same exchange program and didn’t get it, but then I just decided to go and do my own exchange.”

So, following high school, Kathy went over and spent several months living with Uta’s family and the friends have caught up regularly ever since.

For the past 15 years, Kathy has been living in Cameroon, doing mission work, but makes time to visit Uta when in Europe.

“For my children this has been very good to see,” said Uta. “There have always have been people like Kathy coming regularly so they realise that it is good to know languages… our children have to learn at least two

foreign languages if they want to finish high school, so to see that they really can use it; it makes sense to them to put that effort in.”

The visit to Orange was just the start of the holiday for Uta’s family, but she said it has been a great experience for her family to get a taste of dayto-day life in Australia just as she did.

“I was here on a ten-week program and the idea was you would spend time with people and get to know everyday life which I always find is the most interesting anyway. So that’s why I’m really grateful for this week here; to see the sights in Sydney is not as interesting to me as being here, talking about things and having a good time.”

When Orange City Life caught up with Kathy and Uta, they had been busy pouring over old photo albums of their adventures together.

“It has been an amazing trip down memory lane,” said Kathy. “To look back at these things and see how many experiences we’ve had together in our lives and, as I said to Uta, they’ve still got to come and visit us in Cameroon so there’s other adventures to be had.

“We hope it is not over yet and our kids will continue to go visit each other and visit us.”

Our younger readers might find it hard to imagine life before the conveniences of the digital age, but more than half our population grew to adulthood in a time without the internet.

Today, young and old enjoy the benefits that technology brings, but there are many seniors who are missing out, says Rick Hollingworth.

After more than two decades working in the technology industry, Rick and long-time friend Richard Scenna turned their knowledge to the aged care sector. Together they formed YourLink, an organisation focussed on the digital inclusion of seniors.

“I know from doing a lot of work with our senior population, they are just as interested in taking up technology, they just haven’t grown up with it,” said Rick.

“But if they have the right support, they are just the same as any other demographic. I just don’t think we take enough time to explain and show it fits in someone’s life.”

YourLink is an award-winning app Rick and Richard designed as an easy way for older people to keep up to date with family, friends, community and services.

But when it came to roll it out in the real world, Rick said they realised more than just an app was needed to connect seniors to technology.

“We’d won this award, we had this great app and thought, ‘great, lets go work in aged care’ but then they came back and said, we don’t have an iPad’,” said Rick.

“So we realised we had to go right back and do some basic education… we’ve learnt that sometimes it is better to empower the end user with the knowledge of how to use technology, so what we do has changed more into skilling aged people and supporting seniors.”

From one small event of 26 people, Rick said they have gone on to train 1100 seniors around the country.

“Seniors are apprehensive around technology, but once they understand what it can do it really makes a difference in their lives,” said Rick.

“Take the Apple Watch; It has fall detection and that can actually save lives! You can use all these things to make your quality of life better and empower you to live more independently.”

Even something most of us take for granted, such as video calling and streaming entertainment can make a big difference for seniors, particularly those less mobile.

“Maintaining independence and connection to family can solve some of that isolation and loneliness in our senior community— you can’t have a carer sit there with people all the time,” said Rick.

“You shouldn’t be scared of it. I think they are missing out on a lot of uses of technology.”

MOBILE COVERAGE BOOSTED A FOCUS ON REGIONAL AT SUMMER HILL CREEK DEVELOPMENT People living and travelling through Summer Hill Creek and Ophir near Orange will have better phone service to make calls, browse the internet and stay in contact with family and friends with the launch of a new mobile base station on Tuesday.

My constituents have raised the issue of poor service in the Summer Hill Creek area and I’m pleased to have listened and delivered on earlier promises to build this tower.

The RFS and Emergency Services have been publicly worried about communication during bushfire and search and rescue efforts.

The new mobile base station was completed by Optus and is the latest of 37 sites across Calare to receive new or improved mobile coverage under the program.

The new tower is now providing over 70 square kilometres of new and enhanced coverage, including a 12 kilometre stretch along Ophir Road, which is great news for local residents, campers, bushwalkers and the Rural Fire Service.

On Monday Orange said farewell to a legend. In an age where the term legend is used all too readily, Edward Stewart (Ted) Marr was truly that.

He was born on the 13th of October 1953. A Wilcannia lad, he was sent to boarding school in Sydney at a young age. He studied law, rising to prominence among the students by being elected President of the University of Sydney Union.

I first met him, globe-trotting in Hong Kong where he was a highly respected intellectual property lawyer.

I had already heard snippets about this legendary Aussie expat. And then one day he invited my wife Tina and I to lunch at a pigeon restaurant (yep, think a big stack of cooked pigeons!). I liked him immediately.

He flicked me a card from across the table which read “Ted Marr’s World” complete with his contact details and a stylised picture of a globe. I kept that card for years because I loved the cheekiness and the sheer audacity of it.

Ted was wonderful company and hugely entertaining.

He organised balls and parties in every corner of the world and they were truly grand in scale. It was a passion and a business. There was “Hot Nights in Havana” and “Beirut’s Back!” to name but two of his adventures. How he convinced the authorities in China, for example, to allow him to roast a goat on the Great Wall of China for his guests or have them serenaded by the People’s choir in the Great Hall of the People, I’ll never really know! I reckon charm, humour and touch of Aussie larrikinism had a lot to do with it.

One of the features I really admired about Ted was the high value he placed on friendship. He knew what friendship was and also that it was something that had to be worked at. It was a trait I have seen in others from the Wilcannia area. Perhaps it is the isolated existence of the far west.

He was also a very warm and generous man.

Orange got to know Ted when he and his partner Espen took over the iconic Oriana Motel. The transformation has been stunning. And they were just getting started.

It was a meeting of the minds late last week as Regional Development Australia (RDA) representatives from around the state converged on Orange.

I joined them on Friday and was excited to hear the plans the regions have in progress for rural communities across NSW.

As I sat at Ted’s funeral I thought about how we should all take a leaf out of his book and truly enjoy the gift of life while we have it.

Ted Marr lit up the sky like a comet. He was a unique and extraordinary Australian who lived an extraordinary and fabulous life. Above all he was a true friend to me and many, many others.

Our condolences to Espen and Ted’s family.

“There’s a very social side and great for friendships; we didn’t know each other but we are all friends now and we’d like to make more friends! We are always looking for players.”

“It’s called Life Ball,” said Jan Campbell, who has been playing the game here in Orange now for more than a decade.

“I’d always played netball all through my life and then I heard about this for older people. It’s a great way for older people to keep active.”

Life Ball is similar to netball. It is played with teams of six on a court and the object is to shoot a ball through a modified and lowered basketball hoop.

“But you only walk, you don’t run for safety seasons and you don’t walk backwards,” said Jan.

It’s like taking the Pepsi Challenge all over again Anyone who is old enough surely did the same thing as me and mates back in the 70s and the 80s, as we imitated everything we saw and read. The ‘Pepsi Challenge’ had us all believing that not only was it almost impossible to find a difference in the taste between the two major cola brands, Pepsi and Coke, but that if you took a blind taste test, you’d be more than likely to pick the newer kid on the block (Pepsi), than the established brand leader (Coke). The TV ads showed died-in-the-wool Coke drinkers being ‘shocked’ as they swore they knew which one was the Coke, only to pull off their blindfold and find they’d chosen the Pepsi as their favourite.

I’m the only one in my family who uses Skim milk (let’s not argue about the pro’s and con’s here, please). My wife barely drinks any milk at all, and the only child left in our house swears by the full cream stuff, drinking it by the gallon. Each night when I’m on cup of tea duty, I’d top up his Twining’s with a dab of skim instead of ‘his’ milk. He didn’t ever notice the difference, so I fessed up (and apologised) about the deception, but as expected he hadn’t been able to tell the difference at all.

I always get a kick out of the people who arc up about drinking a ‘regular’ beer.

You know, one that would be considered a working man’s beer. Some would call them beer snobs. Hand them a can of straight-down-the-line beer, or shout them a schooner of it and they’re likely to say “I’m drinking that S%#*”. Just like the Pepsi challenge though, I’d defy anyone (even those beer snobs) to be able to tell the difference between one and the other of all the ‘regular’ Aussie beers after they’ve had three or four. In fact, we once hoodwinked a mate by tipping our regular beer into a posh bottle and he didn’t pick it up.

challenge, though. The two biggies that come to mind quickly are coffee and meat.

I’m also willing to stretch that to wine in many cases (but not all, as the $8 wines often win gold at the competitions). I firmly believe our local meats are waaaay better than what comes in from other places.

Sometimes it’s in the preparation and cooking, but if what you start with isn’t top shelf, then you’re up against it before you even hit the barbie. I was recently at a function where the only option was freezedried coffee granules. I wouldn’t have considered myself to be a coffee snob, but …Ugh. I wouldn’t fall for the Pepsi challenge if it came to a barista prepared cup versus a teaspoon of dried pellets, I’m thinking.

It’s been ‘Beatles Month’ in our house, with each of the old CD’s from the Beatles 13 album collection getting a run whilst we had our family dinners over the school holidays. Our youngest (soon to fly the coop) is having great trouble distinguishing between the voices of Paul McCartney and John Lennon in many of the songs. He was able to pick Ringo doing Octopus’ Garden and Yellow Sub pretty quickly, but knowing that John sang The Walrus and Strawberry Fields versus Paul belting out Hey Jude or Blackbird proved a little more difficult.

I played While My Guitar Gently Weeps for him so he could nut out what George sounded like, but each of the other songs from Please Please Me in ’63 through to Let It Be in ’70 was the absolute best kind-of Pepsi Challenge. We’ll keep this one going.

he Central West Women’s Forum is proud to announce high profile speakers for its next two events in September and December, both of which will be held at Duntry League.

On 14th September Dr. Skye Saunders will address an audience of some 100 people following on from the success of the inaugural canape evening held in June with speaker Minister Bronnie Taylor. Skye is a passionate and committed advocate for the advancement of gender equality. Skye is an Associate Professor of Law at the Australian National University and is the Vice President of the YWCA Canberra. In 2018 Skye was part of Project Empower with Country to Canberra to empower teenage girls in rural and remote Australia to achieve their leadership potential.

Maraynne Hawthorn, the Chair of the newly incorporated Central West Women’s Forum said ‘we are delighted that Skye has accepted our invitation to speak at our second canape evening. Skye is a visionary speaker, who is able to convey messages with clarity and resonance, leaving a lasting impact on both hearts and minds.’

Vice Chair of CWWF, Richard Hattersley said ‘Skye invites men to be agents for positive change in a culture of gender discrimination, and the Central West Women’s Forum also believes that men and women together need to be champions of change’.

Skye pioneered the first research in Australia on sexual harassment in rural workplaces which is contained in her book ‘Whispers from the Bush- The Workplace Sexual Harassment of Australian Rural Women.’ In 2017 the Victorian Women’s Trust produced a short documentary film called ‘Grace Under Fire’ which is based on Skye’s research on workplace sexual harassment in rural Australia. In her work, Skye strives to ignite the inherent empathy and perception in both men and women as a central part of her mission to disrupt sex discrimination in the workplace.

Skye was a delegate to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW62 and CSW63) in New York with the YWCA Australia.

Skye was also recently awarded the Chancellor’s Distinguished Young Alumni Award (University of Canberra). She is currently researching for her new book project, ‘Defying Gravity- Rising Above Sex Discrimination in the Workplace’.

Re-raffle raises $1500 for crisis accommodation Congratulation to Monika Rickli whose last-minute raffle ticket purchase scored her return air tickets for two to Melbourne or Brisbane flying with Fly Corporate.

“My parents Bob and Margaret Russell started the store next door over 50 years ago — Bob Russell’s Sports Centre and we used to have toys there — a lot of people in Orange would remember that,” said Kate Ellis, operator of Orange Sportspower and our new toy store, The Big Outlet.

Toys had long been part of the family business, said Kate, but a decade ago the decision was made to focus solely on the sports equipment.

“It was thought it was better for business if you focus on either sport or toys, not both, because you are not able to give it that 100 per cent and it was a big decision back then which way to go,” said Kate, who basically grew up in the business.

“I’ve worked in the shop ever since I can remember,” she said, “just fetching laybys from upstairs to start off.

Even after I joined the police, I used to work on Saturday mornings here in the shop.

“I can remember, we would get phone calls at home on Christmas Eve or something like that and Dad would end up going out and helping people put a gym set up or bikes, they are really fond memories.”

Following the sudden death of her eldest brother David in 2017, Kate took over the family business and together with her husband Scott have since undertaken a complete refit of the Sportspower premises and now ventured once more into toys.

“We were getting a lot of feedback from customers that Orange has been really missing a specialised independent toy store — a real toy store I guess,”

said Kate.

“And last Christmas, the amount of people who came into the sports store asking for toys… and that’s when we decided, let’s do it.”

The Big Outlet opened in February, during the renovation of the Sportspower store, and the range of products has continued to grow.

“It has been a work in progress; we have just been buying shelving and stock but now we are all up and running and ready to go,” said Kate.

“Now we are just ramping up to get everything ready for Christmas!”

The Big Outlet is an authorised Lego dealer and stocks a wide range of popular toys, bikes, scooters, games and puzzles.

“Being a small, independent toy store, we can offer different products to major chains, so you get a bigger better selection and we are also happy to make any special orders anyone would like,” said Kate.

“We have also been selling an unbelievable amount of puzzles and games… I’ve noticed that parents are now looking for ways to keep their kids away from technology and screens, so it is a good time to be selling toys and boardgames.”

With many people turning to online shopping, Kate said locals and those further away will be able to shop The Big outlet online.

But, by being completely run out of the Orange store, they can provide local shoppers with both convenience and friendly face-to-face service.

“That means if people buy stuff online, they have the opportunity to come here and change it — you don’t have the ability to do that with a lot of other online stores. We offer a full shopping experience; refunds, returns for warranty, and we still offer laybys” said Kate.

“Hopefully, selling online, we will be able to put more staff on, which again is a way we can give back to the community. We’ve employed a lot of people over the years and like to support our schools and sporting groups — It is really important for us as a family to give back to the local community.

“With the refit and new store we are investing a lot of money in our business, but when I look at Orange I see a growing, thriving economy. Sure, the drought has affected us, but we are enthusiastic about what the future will bring!

“We’ve been here for over 50 years and we are not going anywhere!”

Some of the team from Orange Real Estate recently attended the Australian Real Estate Property Management 2019 Conference (ARPM) held at the Hyatt Regency in Sydney over August 4 and 5.

We asked them about their experiences: Chelsea: Attending ARPM is one of my favourite parts of the year. This year we heard from so many amazing businesspeople and inspiring speakers, particularly women who are breaking the mould and achieving great things, their way. My favourite speaker was ultramarathon runner Samantha Gash – at 4ft11.5, she has run the hardest and most challenging trails in the world. She proved that you really can achieve anything – she was never a sportsperson, but she put her mind to it and achieved what many would think was the impossible. It just proves that you can do anything you put your mind to, so long as you have a plan, a passion, and believe in yourself. I came away with a great energy and many ideas on ways we can be the best we can be and be the property manager of choice for both our tenants and our landlords.

I loved getting an insight into Business Development Managers from all over Australia who gave great advice and different approaches to our role. Over the weekend we learnt integrating vision, service, technology, digital and good old fashion communication will help our clients receive the best outcome for their largest investment.”

Anything else? I was born here so I have an extensive knowledge of Orange and the surrounding area, this gives me a rather unique view and a good understanding of the area. I’m also a very thorough person, that’s important in this industry because I have to keep everyone’s best interests front and centre and I consider myself able to do this very well.

Chris: This was my very first year at ARPM and it was fantastic. One of the key takeaways from the event included the many ways we can have more effective communication with our customers whether they be landlords or tenants. There were exciting aspects with technological advances improving the services we can offer while making them more accessible and convenient for everyone. Speakers gave us insight into how to approach tasks in more creative and innovative ways while highlighting how the Property Management Industry is changing for the better. Learning how to embrace this change and understand how it will make us better managers was exciting to experience firsthand and we are certainly looking to forward to what this means for us and our customers in the future.

This week, Orange City Life caught up with Craig Kramer from Eagle Eye Termite and Pest Control, who had a few bits of advice for homeowners looking to protect their properties.

Craig has been a pest controller for 21 years and has made eradicating termites a particular specialty of his.

“Termites are in Orange and the Central West — I wouldn’t say they are rampant, but they are here. I’ve done massive amounts of termite work in Orange, Manildra, Cudal, Cumnock et cetera et cetera… so they are around,” said Craig.

“If someone is going to go and buy a house, they normally get a building and property and pest inspection done, but I also suggest that people do some research and find out about the termite barrier system that was done at preconstruction.

“You can do an inspection and it’s all fine, but there may be nothing protecting your home.”

“You can reintroduce a barrier, you reinject a chemical around the perimeter of a property particularly if you are on a slab and you obviously can’t get under it,” he said.

“If you are on bearers and joists on piers you can retreat underneath the place. It can be expensive, but it can also give you a lot of peace of mind.”

Maintaining your termite barrier is

...it is best to nip it in the bud sooner rather than later! ... also something homeowners need to consider when undertaking renovations or landscaping, said Craig.

“If you have dug up a big garden up against the house, or put up and extension

or patio out the back, you may have dug away and breeched a perfectly good termite barrier that you need to reinstall,” he said.

If you’ve just bought a house, Craig said it can also be the ideal time to get a pest treatment done.

“That is something that can be beneficial, particularly as the place is empty and the pest controller can get a really good treatment in,” said Craig.

But the number one piece of advice Craig had for homeowners was to deal with any pest problems promptly.

“If you are starting to see spider webs, if you are starting to see ants crawl around your garden, it is best to nip it in the bud sooner rather than later! If you see a lot of ants you really want to treat it properly, fairly soon and break that breeding cycle. If you allow them to generate a decent colony you can still do it but it’s more difficult!

“If you are looking to do a treatment for general insects, now just prior to spring is a good time to do it.”

was reading the local paper the other day and the frontpage story was simply titled, ‘UP STYLING’, a story about homeowners spending thousands of dollars on property stylists to spruce up their houses for sale.

My wife and I used a property stylist to furnish a property in Melbourne which we were selling a few years ago, as the property didn’t have a tenant at the time and looked bare. To me it makes a lot of sense… give yourself the best chance of getting the best price by making your property look as warm and welcoming as possible.

The article went on to explain that people are spending between $1,200 and $6,000 on styling their homes, with a couple of local real estate agents suggesting the value added to the sale price was between $20,000 and $150,000 on the homes they’d been selling that had been styled.

That sounds like good value to me!

My question to you… if you were selling a property, would you spend between

$1,200 and $6,000 to earn an extra $20,000 to $150,000?

I’m assuming you’re currently nodding your head.

If the return was going to be something more like $500,000 plus, maybe even more than $1 million, how much would you be willing to spend?

If the cost to make that sort of money was also between $1,200 and $6,000, would you think it’s even better value than using a property stylist?

im Frazier, critically acclaimed wildlife cinematographer and inspirational speaker will be giving a talk, which will be followed by a dinner, in Newbridge on September 8.

Jim is one of Australia’s most highly decorated cinematographers. He is the winner of an Oscar, Emmy, has won over forty national and international awards for his work and he is renowned for his work on David Attenborough’s wildlife documentaries. Jim’s career as a wildlife cinematographer has been spread over more than forty years, with many of those years travelling the world filming wildlife for Sir David Attenborough, National Geographic, Time Life and the Disney Channel as well as his own productions. Jim is an inventor, scientist and artist and has revolutionised the world of still photography and film making. Most recently, Jim was invited to deliver several presentations in Singapore as part of the International Bird Conference.

Jim is also a recognized artist with his fabulous crystal art being unique worldwide, his works are in the homes of Oprah Winfrey, Colleen McCullock and Hilary Clinton to name a few. Jim will be in Newbridge to open his Crystal Art and Butterfly exhibition at Olde Bridge Gallery. This is the first time this work has been exhibited in the Central West an is an exhibition not to be missed.

Jim will also be available over the weekend to sign copies of his book “Butterflies on my Mind” Jim is an inspiring public speaker and is passionate about the natural environment He will talk briefly on wildlife, art and environment followed by the opportunity for attendees to ask questions followed by a dinner at the Gladstone hotel in Newbridge. OCLife Words of Wisdom with Melise Coleman This week I caught up with the cheeky, yet very humble Arthur Hart. Arthur describes himself as a ‘happy bloke’ and by gee does he have a good memory. You can throw any situation from his life at him and he will recall the exact date for you.

Where and when were you born?

Lithgow, 1925 What are the most important lessons you’ve learned in life? Keep your hands in your pockets, *laughs*, be nice to other people and look after your family too.

What big events were the most memorable while you were growing up? Getting married was a big one for me. I went out with a couple of other girls, but when Marion came along, I knew she was the one, I took her home one day and we were sitting down, I said oh well here we go *laughs* marry me? It was on the 1st of January 1949, my wife always said she was upset because I got married on the only Saturday that I wasn’t playing cricket *laughs* we had to work around the clock to find a day that was suitable.

We were married in Lithgow.

What is your favourite childhood memory? We lived in Kings Street, Lithgow. We had a double block of land, and we used to play cricket in the backyard, it was very good fun. We also had a horizontal bar (two sleepers) and we used to do exercises on it.

What life advice would you pass along to your grandchildren? Don’t let anybody put anything over you, you’ve got to be pleasant, and you’ve got to respect everybody you come across.

What did you want to be when you grew up? I always wanted to be an Engineer, I started off as a fitter and turner at the Railway, when I finished that, I started a diploma course (because I only went to 3rd year at school). I had three years in Lithgow and then I transferred to Sydney to finish the last years of my trade.

I got the Diploma and came back to Lithgow and worked in the Power Station after about six years I graduated as an Engineer.

I worked in the Power Station at Wallerawang and worked my way up until I became the Deputy Manager of the Power Station, so I was happy about that, but the day I turned 60 I said Hooray! *laughs* You can’t do that these days.

It was a Thursday actually, and I wasn’t there on the Friday *laughs*they all knew I was going and not going back, and it’s been lovely. 1985 that was, a long while ago. We moved to Caves Beach where we had a house opposite the ocean there. We used to swim and go on trips all over the place, it was good fun.

What are you most proud of? I was proud of being an Engineer. But I’d say my family. It’s great to see all of my grandkids, you treat them properly and take them out to lunch when they come home, I buy them lunch. *laughs* What did you get up to when you were young? Playing cricket in the back yard mostly.

I captained the Lithgow team, I was never good enough for the first grade though, I played second grade, the most runs I ever got was about 140 or something. We also never had a car in those days, we would walk to Church every Sunday.

Who is the person who influenced your life the most? Why? My wife, Marion, she was a steady rock for me to lean on.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun now?

The exercises here at Gosling Creek are fun, I moved up here because my daughter and my grandchildren live here, they are fun… *smiles*

Movie Night On Sunday August 25, at 1:30pm, Riding for Disabled Orange will be hosting a private screening of ‘Ride Like a Girl’ the inspirational true story of Michelle Payne, the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup, at the Odeon Cinema.

Tickets are $20 which includes afternoon tea and will be available at Collins Booksellers, Orange. All funds raised from the event will go to Riding for Disabled Orange.

THUMBS UP to the Glee Club and Orange Ex-Services Club management and staff for the great Christmas in July lunch. Wonderful food and company, great time had by all.

THUMBS UP to OCL for the great job they do bringing much enjoyment to so many lives.

THUMBS DOWN to the State Government for not funding free TV and wi-fi for inpatients at the Orange Hospital. Many patients are facing mental health issues and can be unable to afford these services which should be beneficial to their recovery.

BIG THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council who are constantly putting up the rates. You are making more people homeless. There are many who cannot afford these high rates anymore, we pensioners do not get more money and also need money for house repairs. You are creating more poverty in Orange, we need a council that looks after the people. We have the highest rates out of Sydney, why?

People who need to rent a place will have their rent put up and cannot afford to pay more, there is only so much money available.

Outside Orange you are charging more

than $2000 for Rates, you supply nothing, no water no garbage collection and only a 2 bedroom little house. Council, have consideration for the people who are just trying to survive and have a roof over their head.

THUMBS UP to the person who handed in $60 at North Orange Woolies on Sunday. Two boys were quite stressed for 15 minutes. Your honesty was a good relief to them. Good on the boys who then went around and thanked the staff who helped them.

THUMBS UP to the very helpful and professional staff - Richard, Cheryl and Lucy at the local GIO office in Summer St. The advice I received in the last few months was tailored to my specific needs and helped me make informed decisions that have saved me several hundred dollars.

The experience of dealing face to face with local people running a local business and employing a young local person, has been a vast improvement on the frustrations of dealing with insurance companies call centres around the country, with staff not knowing or interested in the client’s specific needs!

THUMBS UP to Jean from Ziera Shoes. For the last 15 years my mother

and I have been coming from Dubbo to be fitted by Jean, her service and knowledge of orthotics is second to none and we are devastated that you are closing.

BIG THUMBS DOWN to the drivers who use Huntley Road and speed along that road while there is a 40km road work zone. Slow the hell down before they put a mobile speed camera there as well.

Remember honesty is the best policy. There are struggling farmers out there who solely rely on their farm income who are doing it incredibly tough. Please allocate to farmers who are down to their last penny and are only just holding it together.

THUMBS DOWN to Vinnies for having no drop off bins, I went to donate blankets/doonas but was greeted with a notice saying if you dump goods here you will be reported to the police. I thought the term was donate not dump and no notice where goods can be dumped. I drove to other known places and nothing, so after an hour wasted and petrol, sorry Vinnies you missed out, so is Orange not donating to charities anymore.

THUMBS UP to Wisharts Automotive for making my car purr like a kitten after I blew up the engine last summer (apparently I have to put some oil in there

every now and then). Plus they are letting me drop the car in late in the week for a service because I can’t otherwise. Now I can keep going to Sydney-Orange to continue seeing my girl! Much appreciated.

People forget easy and need to be reminded.

It is important to support our local shops and this has got nothing to do with any shopping frenzy as one complainer says, it only means that if you need something, please check out our local shops first and get it there if they have it instead of ordering over internet or go to the big cities. I always buy locally if possible, no matter what, there are many things available in Orange. We need to keep our shops open and not all closing down, we do not want an empty town without any shops. Things are hard enough for any shop owner, they need our support. So this is my opinion, I do not own any shop, just an old lady who enjoys all these little shops in town and the special service their owners give.
