Speaking for myself, I’m all electioned out. Only thing left to do is wait and see who wins on Saturday. May it be the very best result for our Nation. Back onto local politics and sad to say one of the hottest issues at the moment in Orange involves toilets, and in particular the one that’s on again, off again in Robertson Park. Following a survey we ran last week, it’s pretty clear what the community thinks, and you can see those results on page 7. Our much-loved Production Manager Annabel has been giving me a hurry up lately wanting to show off her creative design skills. She hasn’t been totally happy with some of my design preferences and is keen to put her stamp on a few things. So, like all blokes who have a woman they respect greatly to deal with, I basically gave in and said show me what you’ve got. This week’s issue shows off some of Annabel’s latest work. I like it, and I think you will too. Enjoy! You would have seen the mention of a new website project I’ve been developing called National Life. The site is now up and running and I’m hoping it might one day become as popular nationally as OC Life is locally. You can read more about it in this issue and you can see how it’s coming along at www.nationallife.com.au

... STUDENTS WERE TOLD THE SKY IS THE LIMIT WHEN THE TIME CAME TO THINK UP A DESIGN AND WOW, DID THEY DELIVER...

tudents from Mullion Creek Public School have successfully exhibited a number of sculptures at the recent, ‘Sculptures in an Orange Garden’, winning the best school entry and two children’s choice awards. That wasn’t enough for them! They then entered into the Orange Show and received another win. The whole school project began with Principal Mrs Beer and Art Teacher Mrs Cloete (and parents) sourcing materials for the children to use. Pieces retrieved were then laid down and students began their process of configuration. Students were told the sky is the limit when the time came to think up a design and wow, did they deliver. Principal, Mrs Sally Beer said, “A lot of our older students looked at Abstract (memory boxes/circle of life) and were abstract in their thought processes, including the artist statement, which we think is very clever. Mrs (Sharon) Cloete is the driving force behind the Art projects here, she does incredible things and is very creative, she spoke to the children and gave them lots of inspiration.” Over two days, seven ‘Super Dads’ offered to help and spent

their time supporting the projects by jumping on the welding gear for the students. “They had conversations like ‘Is this where you want it’, so that their vision became a reality in the 3D form that it is. 'I want that feather this way.’ The Dads were very patient, they would move and adjust things as the children spoke to them, so it’s really nice to see the parents around supporting those creative activities.” “Our students were very excited about the wins although they just loved creating them. It’s about the creation and what they could see and how it came about building the structures - not necessarily about the win. It’s just beautiful to watch, the way they talk to one another and designed and built and made.” “I think every sculpture is amazing, I love them. I loved watching the children create, how they brought them to life.” If you want to get a look at the sculptures, you’ll have to be quick! They will be up for sale (on Election Day), sold at the school - ballot style. Congratulations to the Mullion Creek School community, you have good reason to feel proud.

Steve I spent 27 years in gaol.... as a prison officer. I started in Goulburn, went to the Supreme Court in Sydney and then to Cessnock. We lived on the Central Coast at the time, but my wife had double pneumonia twice. So, where we were living was no good for her and then the chance came up for me to transfer from Cessnock to Bathurst Gaol — that was around 20 years ago. My mother-in-law bought a place out at Blayney that had a spare block

Then I heard from a friend of a friend of a friend that Live Better were looking for drivers and that was it — I volunteered. If you’ve got the time, do it! It keeps your mind active and it keeps me from under the wife’s feet, instead of sitting home vegetating. You get to know your people, you get to know

what they want, what their needs are and every time you pick them up and take them to where they’ve got to go you make a difference. These people are very limited in their mobility and would not be able to get anywhere unless they’ve got the transport, so I’m giving someone who can’t get out the chance to get out. It helps them out and helps me out by keeping me active.

Hopefully, come Sunday, this week’s Federal Election result will be known, and we can all return to normal life. Of course, given how election results have gone over recent times, that may be too much to expect. It seems that many elections now are so close that getting the final outcome can sometimes drag into the following week or even longer. What I’m now about to say will sound totally stupid to many people, but in all honesty, I think it may be a reflection of how many people are feeling about politics and politicians at this time. I think we’d be no worse off if we just threw the names into a hat and had a lucky draw to determine who wins. The reason I say this is because from where I sit, it really does seem like a lottery rather than a ballot where people cast votes having made an informed decision based on the information they know or have been given. Electioneering has always been a game but the way the game is played today borders on the ridiculous. That’s certainly my opinion, I wonder how others see it? To back that up, here’s how I see the modern election game played. The spirit of pre-polling is meant for people who won’t be around on election day. Today, it seems it’s used by anyone who simply doesn’t want the hassle associated with voting on polling day. A simple lie will allow you to vote. Does that make sense? Why bother asking if it really doesn’t matter? Then we have social media. We’ve all heard of the questionable things that are put on social media where candidates are smeared or

ridiculed, and it’s pretty obvious that such activity can seriously affect an election result. Surely such material is not helpful for voters. Next, we have the campaign period itself. This is a time when the pollies bombard us with promises, claims, counter claims and then throw money at seemingly everything, it almost appears as if there’s no tomorrow. Why is the game played this way? In this election, as with most, we’ve had heaps of time to see our pollies in action, hear what they say, see what they do or don’t do and basically get to know who they are and what are they like. Surely the “games” our pollies have played during the last 3 – 4 weeks shouldn’t change a person’s mind on what they think of them and whether they’ll vote for them? If we didn’t know them and have our mind made up a month ago, I can’t see how anything said or done in the last few weeks should change that. Politicians bombard us day in, day out with pollie speech and as sure as night follows day, one will say black, one will say white on every subject. I for one, don’t know who to believe and therefore have little respect for the political system at large. That is not say there aren’t some very good people in politics, there are. For me, politics has become nothing more than a game and I for one don’t care who wins, I doubt much will change other than some voters will end up better off and some will end up worse off. Next time, the winners and losers might change but nothing that really matters in the big picture will change for the better. I’d be just as happy to see the winners drawn from a hat to save us the pain of having to play or watch the election game ever again.

Breath-taking horsemanship on show BY MELISE COLEMAN Cudal endured three seasons in one day last Friday as their Campdraft weekend kicked off in style. It poured, it sprinkled, it was sunny, it was cloudy….you get the gist. Competitors took the weather in their stride and OCL was there to capture the ‘Maiden’ round. The three-day event displayed the best combination of control, riding skills, speed, and completion of the course. Competitors who score the highest points determines the overall winner. The ability of the horses, combined with breath-taking horsemanship, makes camp drafting a great sport for competitors, spectators and photographers!

Teams don’t get any better than a Father, Mother, Daughter and Son-in-Law one, and that is what ‘Jones and Smith Distillery’ is, the first family craft distillery in the Orange area.

ot and Tony Jones purchased their property back in 2002 with a longterm dream of starting their very own distillery, well.. that dream is becoming a reality as we speak. The name, evidently derived from a culmination of Tony and Dot Jones, and their daughter, Kylie, and husband Nicholas Smith. Before the dream could become a reality, extensive research was undertaken with multiple trips to numerous states around Australia. Tony explained, “We met many people in the industry from distillers to cooperages to still and equipment fabricators and met some wonderful new friends. We were eventually convinced it was something achievable. We then began the tedious process of obtaining licences and approvals through all three levels of government.” Tony and his daughter, Kylie then flew to Tasmania to what was at the time, the only recognised ATO excise licence distilling course in Australia. Kylie said, “We studied under some of the most well-known names in Australian Whiskey including Jack Lark

(The Godfather of Whiskey, Bill Larks Son.)” “Dad then proceeded to travel back to Tassie to work/learn from other leading distilleries. It has been invaluable in allowing us to develop the skills required to be able to start producing our own take on the Modern Australian Whiskey scene.” “We found that other Distilleries in Australia are very welcoming. It’s not hush, hush - business against business, they’ve been fantastic. We call them up with ideas and questions and they are only too happy to help you, no secrets, they have really embraced us. We have also been working with local wineries, such as Patina Wines to source a series of local barrel flavour profiles for our whisky, and to create our own Brandy and they have been wonderful.” “With the four of us so passionate, full of ideas and different interests, Mum and Dad working part time, Nick is working full time and I’m a full time Mum, between us all, whenever we have time we come here. PJL GROUP IS A MECHANICAL AND ENGINEERING BUSINESS PROVIDING SERVICES TO THE RESOURCE AND CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRIES. Founders Phil Wilkins, Luke Buckland and Joel Spagnolo were all diesel mechanics who, in 2006, decided to band together to offer fleet maintenance services to Cadia and other local mining companies. “That was how we started; in a shed at the back of my property in Molong and it has just sort of morphed from there,” said Luke Buckland. Not that the three friends had any idea just how far their business venture would take them. “We didn’t start out with a very strong business plan, I’ve got to admit, three fitters and a pen, is probably the best way to describe it,” laughed Luke. “And it has certainly morphed into more than what we had originally imagined.” Today, PJL Group prides itself on its focus on quality, safety and innovation and attitude has definitely played a part in their growth and success. “It’s our nimbleness and our ability to react to what a client needs,” said Luke. “We don’t just rock up and offer a standard range of products. We like to be able to go into a client’s workplace, assess what they’re doing and then come up with a solution to whatever problem they’ve got going on and that generally brings a lot of work in the door.” One of the early opportunities Luke and his partners took advantage of was devising a better way to deliver concrete underground, purchasing and modifying a

dump truck for the purpose. “A lot of our clients, they needed a specific truck that could carry concrete underground. Everybody is doing it now, but back then there were very limited options. They were using a lot of the conventional trucks you’d see on the road, but they have issues with brakes and were causing a lot of safety concerns underground and so in that instance there was a need for an Agi Truck and we were able to provide our client with a solution,” said Luke. “It was a bit of a niche market at the time and that gave us a pretty good in with a lot of clients and it progressed on from there.” From servicing underground mining fleets, PJL Group soon expanded to also offer in house machining, engineering and fabrication services. “We started employing machinists and boiler makers, purchased the tooling and geared our business up to do that side of it. That brought in different elements of work which has led us into looking after fixed plant and construction work. Not only do we maintain the existing infrastructure, we will go out and build it for the mines as well,” said Luke. PJL also now run an asset hire fleet for the underground market and carry a large stock of service exchange components to get equipment back in working order quickly. Today, PJL has a strong workforce of over 250 employees, most based out of a large facility in Leewood Drive, with other premises in Parkes, Cobar , Perth and plans underway for further expansion across Australia.

“We bring in a lot of work off the back of our reputation, anywhere from Tasmania, Western Australia, North Queensland – and it all comes back into Orange. I’d say anywhere from 60 -70 per cent of the work comes from out of area, so that has to be a good thing for the Orange community,” said Luke. The growth of PJL has seen the company structure change and Luke and his partners have actually taken a step back from the day to day running of the business. “We have employed a CEO and a strong management team. You have to be smart enough to understand your capabilities and bring in the appropriate people with the appropriate skill set and put them into the appropriate positions,” said Luke. “We’ve transitioned over the last few years and made some changes to give the business good sustainability moving forward. We want to be here in another 20 years time, not just be a flash in the pan when the industry is going well.”

hanks to the generous support of local charity Ashcroft’s Let’s Make Better, the Orange branch of Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) have been able to make the much-loved horse PJ a permanent member of their stable. PJ has been on lease to the local RDA, but recently came up for sale. “We have used PJ for quite some time, and he has proved to be a really good horse,” said branch president Robyn Livermore. “During the year Ashcrofts support us very generously with donations through various ways, so we decided we would spend the money to purchase PJ. As you know, the horses

have to be of a very quiet nature and this horse has been trialled here for some time and proven to be exactly what we want so it is very good to have this money to purchase PJ.” For 40 years the RDA has been there to help local Orange children with disabilities and today it continues to be a boon for kids at the Anson Street and Glenroi schools. “It is a wonderful program,” said Robyn. “We have children here that probably don’t speak very much, but when you get them on the horse they are quite chatty. And there is definitely a bond they form with their horse. “We are very grateful to the community of Orange for their support and at the moment if anybody has a very quiet horse that they think we could possibly use out here we would be very interested in trialling it to see if it was suitable.”

BLUE LADIES celebrate 50 years

n December 1968 a group of women decided to form another voluntary organisation to assist the hospital, to be known as the Blue Ladies. The idea was put forward by hospital social worker, Rosemary Bulleid, who felt the extra service would be invaluable once the new hospital was built. There was some opposition to the group being formed because the auxiliary had done such excellent work over many years. While fully endorsing the work of the auxiliary, Matron Gouldstone supported the formation of the Blue Ladies. “The nursing staff is kept busy doing nurses’ work and in a big hospital there simply isn’t the time for a nurse to sit down and chat or read to a patient.” The hospital board was divided on the issue but eventually agreed the group should be established. The group finally formed at a meeting held at Caldwell House on June 4, 1969. The 15 members started off by providing a trolley service each weekday morning and carrying out other tasks as required. Wearing blue striped smocks, they would become a familiar sight around the hospital. Now, 50 years on, the Blue Ladies and Men will be celebrating at Duntryleague on June 4, from 2-4pm. All members and ex-members are invited to come along and share their memories from over the years. Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) Dr Alice Henschke

If your loved one has spent time in an intensive care unit (ICU) for illness, following an accident, or after major surgery you were perhaps excited to finally get them home only to find everything didn’t just go back to normal. ICU survival is only the beginning of what in worst cases, can be a process that lasts many months. The patient may be experiencing Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) if they are feeling tired, having difficulty thinking, or become anxious when remembering events that took place in intensive care. PICS affects one in two people. Whilst your loved one may do quite well and have a steady recovery once home, they might also be one of the many people that experience difficulties that need to be addressed before they can really get back to their normal self. Everyone is different and everyone’s journey will be unique. This month we are talking about the new challenges to the brain, body and emotions to help you at least get a feel for what you and your loved one may be dealing with for the next weeks and months.

Physical signs • Experiencing long lasting weakness and fatigue • Having difficulty performing activities of daily living • Having impaired lung function (if ventilated during treatment)

Psychiatric signs • Feeling depressed or anxious (the most common mental health challenge in PICS) • Having trouble sleeping • Experiencing post-traumatic stress syndrome • Having re-occurring vivid dreams and re-experiencing the trauma or accident Inability to effectively perform daily tasks can be particularly distressing and people who experience these difficulties often get frustrated or upset by them and this may spill over to you and wider family as well.

What is Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS)?

If the impact of your loved one’s illness or accident is great and you become the primary carer, you yourself may also experience a sense of loss for what you had before, or loss of control on your life. This can lead to stress on your relationship.

PICS can affect people in many ways: their brain (cognitively), their body (physically), or their emotions (psychiatrically) and, because not everyone is the same, it is not strange for people to experience a range of things.

Another consequence could be financial strain on the family caused by loss of income if you or your loved one is no longer able to work, or the cost of ongoing treatment and care.

After time in ICU people may display one or more indicators of PICS:

What you can do to look after yourself and family

Cognitive signs • Experiencing confusion • Being unable to make higher level choices such as financial decisions • Finding it difficult to go back to work, go shopping or plan a meal • Being more forgetful than before the ICU stay • Not being able to concentrate • Having trouble juggling tasks that used to be easy

Post Intensive Care Syndrome is a growing area of interest. Research is currently being carried out to identify how to prevent and treat PICS which will help provide us with more information in the future. It is important to talk to your family and your doctor. Some people get therapy, different types of physical and even “cognitive” rehabilitation after they survive the ICU. Others start on medications depending on the main problems and

how long they are lasting. The good news is that most of these problems will go away over the next few months to a year, though in some they can last longer. Recommendations of what families can do whilst the patient is in ICU: • If it is possible, keep a diary whilst in ICU this will so that the patient is able to reflect on their experience if they are getting psychological help after discharge. • Families are encouraged to help keep the patient in touch with the outside world such as having photos in their hospital room, clocks and familiar faces whilst constantly talking about what is going on. This should help lessen confusion. • Reportedly the amount of communication between the treating medical team and the patient and family is a major influence on the chance of a patient suffering PICS. Seeking information and regular updates from the doctors and nurses when in hospital will help lessen the chance of PICS. Recommendations of what families can do once the patient is at home: • Communication is the most important thing – If you have recognised that things are aren’t normal seek advice and help from your family doctor. They will provide advice regarding rehabilitation, physiotherapy, support services and can make a referral to see a psychiatrist if it is necessary. • Be patient – one day in ICU is equal to approximately one week of recovery.

Intensive Care Specialist, Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney Dr Alice Henschke grew up in Armidale NSW and always planned on working in a regional centre. She studied at UNSW (undergraduate medicine) but was a Rural Cadet which meant she was sponsored to spend her first two post graduate years in a regional centre. She chose Orange. Alice met my husband here and since then has always kept a base in Orange even while completing her specialist intensive care training in Sydney. In 2017 she came back to live in Orange and work as an Intensive Care Specialist at the hospital. At this time, she also took on the role of Senior Lecturer - Medicine block co-ordinator with the University of Sydney School of Rural Health (SRH). Alice loves teaching and medical education. She currently not only teaches the medical students but also the junior doctors and nurses using multidisciplinary training to reflect real life and work more accurately.

Dr Henschke is also Chair of the Resuscitation Committee whose role is to oversee the emergency response to the deteriorating patient in the hospital. In addition she is currently overseeing a project focused on end of life care and advanced care directives as another interest of hers is good End of Life care.

A healthy work-life balance is important to Alice who has two daughters aged six and 20 months and works part time so she can spend time at home with her family.

arlier this week the Orange Men’s Shed gathered to celebrate their 10-year anniversary. A delicious catered lunch and visit from Mayor Reg Kidd (who opened this very shed 10 years ago) was the talk of the evening. Such is the enthusiasm of shed members, 74 active members, 45 (including ex members) were there to celebrate on the day. President, Hugh Laird said, “Today is generally a day out for the boys to say thanks very much for the 10 years. We have some blokes who have travelled all the way from Sydney, even Tea Gardens to be here, even though these guys have moved away they still support us which we really appreciate.” “We are giving out 10-year certificates and four life member certificates. We are also acknowledging two ladies, Zita Spicer who looks

$250,000 FOR NEW AMENITIES BLOCKS AT THE CANOWINDRA SHOWGROUND

Canowindra has a bustling tourism industry, which includes the annual Canowindra International Balloon Glow, bringing thousands of visitors to the town each year. The current amenities at the Showground are in dire need of replacement, having been constructed in the 1940’s. At the moment, visitors have to use facilities which are well past their use-by-date and a bit rough to access in bad weather I was joined by the Deputy Prime Minister last week to announce that if re-elected the Coalition Government will invest $250,000 to construct three new amenities blocks at the Canowindra Showground to cater to the numerous events held throughout the year. Showgrounds are the social hubs of many country towns and this upgrade will give the Canowindra Showground a new lease on life.

Saving a deposit for your first home can be a real struggle, with most banks and lenders requiring a minimum 20% deposit or at the very least forcing borrowers to pay tens of thousands of dollars extra through mortgage insurance if they can’t get there. From 1 January next year, a re-elected Coalition Government will give first home buyers the chance to get into the market with a deposit of 5% and without the need to take out expensive mortgage insurance, through a First Home Loan Deposit Scheme. The scheme will be available to first-home buyers with an income of up to $125,000, or $200,000 for a couple who are both first home buyers. It will be capped to a house price value determined on a regional basis, reflecting the different property markets across Australia.

What would you say is your main point of difference over your competitors? Our range of local wine, easily by far. About 70 per cent of our wine sales are local wines — that’s what people visiting the town and people from the town want to buy. We try to support a lot of the smaller wineries around, good wines that people maybe aren’t aware of.

Apart from your extensive local wine selection, what else do you offer customers? We have good prices on beer and non-local wine, pre-mix spirits and a few imported things. We

also sell a lot of local cider and local beer from Pioneer and Badlands — they are very popular. Being a drive through, we offer convenience which is great for people who come in with their kids in the car or if they are an older person they can stay in the car. We carry it to their car, we have mobile EFTPOS, so you don’t have to get out if you don’t want to. I hear you are planning to hold a few events at Orange Cellars? Tipple is our big event coming up on the Sunday of the June Long Weekend. We are going to have five or six wine stalls: Phillip Shaw, Angullong, Ross Hill are all coming as well Pioneer, Badlands and Small Acres Cyder. There will be a couple of food vendors too. Set in the East Village of New York City, Rent is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Rent has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages. Based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme, Jonathan Larson’s Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV AIDS. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical. “Our audience who have seen it previously will

probably come with a preconceived idea, though we have changed it up a bit and have put our own spin on it, explained, Show Director, Sam Fuda. “I love the show from start to finish, it’s been my favourite show since I can remember, I’ve seen it done by other theatre companies about six or seven times.” By the time the curtain opens on show day, cast members will have completed 14 weeks of rehearsals, three nights a week. “You always have your ups and downs and that ‘didn’t work so let’s change that, that’s fantastic lock that in moments’, but I have the privilege of working with a really keen and amazing cast, they learnt everything really early and we are ahead of schedule (which is kind of unheard of in showbusiness).” 33 cast members and a four piece rock band will take to the stage for five shows in four days and take you on a journey you never thought you were ready for. Ladies set to take on THE LAKE ONCE AGAIN BY MELISE COLEMAN

ollowing the resounding success of the inaugural Ladies of the Lake Mountain Bike Challenge in 2018, Orange Mountain Bike Club are pleased to announce the return of the event in 2019. Held at the Club’s home trails at the Lake Canobolas Mountain Bike Park, and offering trails for riders of all skill level and experience, the event is set amongst native bushland and boasting views certainly worth climbing the hill for. The Challenge is designed to encourage female riders to ‘have a go’, in a positive and fun environment, while also providing an opportunity for more competitive riders to pit themselves against the trails and other riders. The event

features three distinct categories for riders to choose from: Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert, with the riding trails catering to the skill level of those riders. Riders are challenged to complete as many laps as they can (or want) within two hours. All entrants will receive a pack of riding goodies, and a souvenir race plate, with spot prizes and podium prizes in each category also up for grabs. In the weeks approaching the October 27 Challenge, the ladies of Orange Mountain Bike Club will host track familiarisation sessions and workshops, aimed at helping newer riders gain confidence and build riding skills. The sessions will be free of charge and held at the Lake Canobolas Mountain Bike Park. After attending a women-only mountain bike

race held at Canberra’s Mt Stromlo in 2017, event organisers Kim Broadfoot, Leanne Palmer, and Alli Campbell saw the demand for female orientated mountain bike events - so they decided to hold one of their own. The 2018 inaugural event attracted over 60 female riders, some travelling from as far afield as Jindabyne and Sydney to attend. Of the 64 entrants, it was noted that about three-quarters of riders had never participated in a mountain bike race before, showing that the desire to participate in the sport is growing. The Voting Dilemma It’s crazy, they’re making us vote for someone we don’t even know. With only a couple of days to go until (yet another) election is done and dusted, the collective sigh of relief this whole country is going to utter on Sunday morning once it’s over will be heard on the moon, I’m wagering. Whether this one wins or that one wins, our TVs, Radios, Newspapers, iPads, computers and phones will finally be able to get back to their regular jobs of annoying us with ads for bargain clothes, shoes, food and insurance. Phew, I was kinda missing all that! I’m away on Election Day. So I took the option of voting early, just like a couple of millions of Australians who it appears will also be ‘away’ on election day. It’s not for me to judge, but I’d have a side bet that a large number of pre-poll votes were done just so that people could just get it over with, and not have to pay any more attention to the deafening white noise that has dominated the last six months. Pretending to be on my phone and ignoring those people outside the polling station pushing the how-to-vote flyers in my face, I made it inside the door, had my name ticked off and picked up the voting papers. I knew who I was voting for, and also who I definitely was not voting for. But then the lovely lady behind the counter informed me (the ads hadn’t been on TV about it yet) that even if I voted above the line on the senate form, I had to vote for at least SIX players, and that I had to vote 1 to 7 on our local form. Hmmm … hadn’t planned for that. It took me a little by surprise.

Perusing the names on our ballot paper for the seat of Calare, I noted that of the seven candidates on the voting form, I ‘knew’ three of them (two of whom were on my ‘no’ list) and then there were four candidates who’s names I’d never even heard of, even though I’ve lived in the district for just shy of thirty years. But if we want our votes to count, we’re required to ‘vote’ for people who we never even heard of. In some cases we might have an idea of what their parties believe in, but maybe not in other cases. So, here’s the dilemma for all of us … do we rank our votes in an order which puts the ones we don’t want, below those who we’ve never even heard of (or whose party ideas we don’t really subscribe to)? Or do we leave those we believe shouldn’t be in power at the bottom, and rank those we’ve never laid eyes on above them? Both of these options seem totally illogical in my opinion. Then there’s the Senate paper – you can’t even lay it out in the voting booth it’s so absurdly wide. Give six votes Paul, and make them measured, valid and considered. Oh my, that’s even more absurd than the House of Reps voting system. There’s the couple I’ll vote for, the other ‘main’ parties, the wannabe parties, the ones who I’ll never vote for, the humorous ones, the ridiculous ones, the single issue ones, others I really haven’t heard of, plus others who’ve been in the news for all the wrong reasons. There’s no way known I’d give a vote to six of them above the line if I wasn’t being forced to. So … do you go with the devil you know, or the devil you don’t? Good luck and have your say – just be careful so that you aren’t in the 9% who end up having their vote voided. Woo hoo – next week things will be back to ‘normal’.

illthorpe locals have enthusiastically-embraced the revived train service for the picturesque village with the XPT now stopping most days to drop-off and pick-up passengers for the first time in 33 years. It was feared that, after the initial excitement of the March re-opening of the Railway Station following completion of a new $1 million miniplatform, patronage from residents might dropoff. However, this hasn’t proven the case. A recent work-day saw a flurry of activity at the Station with a number of passengers embarking and disembarking from the 12-noon train including locals John Wilson and Eleanor

Fairbairn-Wilson who arrived from Central Station in Sydney. “The guard told us that it’s stopping every day for passengers, it’s been very good,” John said. The couple utilised the new service to visit family members in Sydney without the hassle of taking their own vehicle. “We don’t go down to Sydney a lot, but we will use the service whenever we can; this means we don’t have to get friends to take us to Blayney to catch the train,” Eleanor added. The local service was revived in mid-March with more than 500 locals, guests, dignitaries, and rail enthusiasts celebrating the fact that once again allows passenger trains would operate from the idyllic 133-year-old station.

Just over a year ago my husband and I moved to Chile with our three young kids. It was hard to say goodbye and move well out of our comfort zone. Everyday we encounter challenges as we learn Spanish and adapt to a new culture. Chileans love Australia. They’re at once fascinated by the beauty of our land and frightened by the array of deadly animals we boast! And they often ask me “Why?” Why leave such a beautiful home? The short answer is Jesus. The Bible records the story of God’s rescuing love for humanity and how it all comes together in his son Jesus. My husband has the privilege of meeting with these young people to discuss what God is saying through his Bible. We’ve moved our whole lives here and learnt a whole new language simply for this task. Live When Monty Eccleston first got up and performed on stage here in Orange, it wasn’t his idea. “My girlfriend, Lilly, signed me up for this open mic night and said, ‘you’ve got to get up and sing four songs’ and I said, ‘I don’t want to do that’,” recalled Monty. “She said I didn’t have a choice, so I got up and I did it and I’m really grateful that I did. It opened my eyes to the opportunities in Orange and I’ve been trying to do as many open mic nights as I can.” Monty first started playing music when he was just 8 years old, after hearing his brother play the piano on a visit home from boarding school. “My brother was my inspiration. He’d come back in the holidays and start playing piano in front of everyone and I saw all the enjoyment everyone got from that, so I decided then I wanted to learn piano.” Not that it was purely the idea of playing music that initially motivated Monty. “I wanted to beat him at it. I got really competitive … It was just ‘that is what my brother is doing, and I want to beat him at it’. I was like that was the game and that was what I had to do, so that’s what I did. That’s where it began.” After heading off to St Joseph’s boarding school in Sydney, Monty pursued music in earnest, discovering he also had a love for singing. “I started singing lessons there and I did that all the way up until Year 12 — I did singing for my HSC. Joeys is a

really big school for singing, they are very passionate about it, and so it sort of swallowed me up and I took to it and really enjoyed it,” said Monty “I was in the chapel choir and we’d be singing hymns ever Sunday night and singing at the Wednesday Mass and other services. We did a lot of performances at assembly and there were countless times we sang at the nursing home down the road for the old people.’” Singing at school or with family is one thing, but until he was pushed on stage, performing just wasn’t something on Monty’s radar. “No, not really — It never really occurred to me while I was there, we were at school six days a week,” he said. “But it is really nice to get out, see what other people are doing and you get to learn from what they are doing. I enjoy it and I’m really glad Lilly forced me to do it.” Monty only completed his schooling last year and is currently enjoying a gap year before heading to Canberra to study finance. While he doesn’t necessarily see a career in music, he also doesn’t plan on giving up performing any time soon. “It is always something that I want to have in my life, for sure. After every single day I come back into the house and the first place I go is to the piano, so it will always be a part of my life. “It brings my family together, it brings my siblings together and I really, really enjoy it — I’m just very thankful. Music will always be a part of my life.”

BRICKWORKS This week’s photo shows Frost’s brickworks on the eastern edge of Orange. English born Samuel Frost settled in Orange in 1863 and soon built a kiln to fire the bricks. At a time when Orange was expanding rapidly, there was a great demand for bricks. Frost was so adept at his craft that he won a prize for his products. He employed many workers who were kept busy supplying bricks for the construction of viaducts and buildings on the western railway line. The area where the brickworks was is now occupied by Anzac Park sports grounds.

Bloomfield Fundraiser Photos by EdithMay Gowing The Bloomfield Hospital Ancillary held a fundraising BBQ at Bunnings on Saturday May 11th. They also had a raffle running. The Bloomfield Hospital Ancillary supports the Bloomfield hospital and their patients. The funds from the BBQ will top up resources that are used throughout the year to support individual people and hospital unit projects as the Ancillary responds to various requests. They aim to assist people with Mental Health conditions or with Drug or Alcohol Issues, both short term and long-term patients, including both onsite and in community. Many polling centres have sizzles in full swing all day long, perhaps to alleviate the boredom and frustration of standing in line to vote as well as to raise money for charity from a somewhat captive community gathering. Some simply go along just for the sausage sizzle, no intention to vote! The advantage of using sausages is that they need not be eaten straight away, can be cooked in bulk quantities, kept warm without spoiling for a short time and do not need specific and varied cooking times like steak which has to be eaten straight away and prepared to the taste of the customer. Sausage sizzles have become quite a social, egalitarian activity, acceptable to most. It's a meeting of the community, a bonding not just for food, chance to hover around the BBQ chatting and interacting. It's more than a simple easy fund raiser.

After WWII the better cuts of meat were exported from Australia and the scraps left were turned into sausages which could be afforded by everyone no coupon needed. As a consequence, they were much maligned until about the 1960s when the sausage sizzle raised the profile of the humble, poverty-stricken sausage, banishing the snobbery factor to become what they are today.
