ENTERTAINMENT WITH DENISE MILLS

Australians all let us rejoice for the return of The Wharf Revue. The unstoppable comedic minds of Jonathan Biggins, Drew Forsythe and Phillip Scott have been keeping the nation’s political and cultural leaders on their metaphorical toes since before Sydney hosted the Olympics. In 2017, they return with an all-new, up-to-the minute, fibre-to-the-node dose of side-splitting sketches and rib-tickling songs. (BYO hyphens.) From the highs to the lows, from the good to the bad to the ugly, this will be a parade of the year’s most memorable characters and the moments they’d prefer to forget. So, whether you want to calm your nerves or double your disillusion, we all need a fresh serve of laughter, dance and foolishness. With The Wharf Revue on its way into town, there truly has never been a more exciting time to be alive. “An uncompromising choice for a knockabout entertainment and it will bring tears to your eyes.”—Stage Noise They’ll be at the Orange Civic Theatre on 29 and 30 September.

VIVALDI’S FOUR SEASONS –

VIA BUENOS AIRES! In this invigorating cocktail of musical styles, Argentinian Tango Virtuoso Maggie Fergurson weaves her sensuous and provocative music into Vivaldi’s masterpiece – the four seasons. The Bandoneon was made famous in classical concert halls by Argentinian tango composer, Astor Piazolla. After years of mastering this instrument in Argentina, Maggie has returned to Australia to perform and teach. In 2003, after two decades as a classical violinist and chamber musician, Maggie Ferguson went to Buenos Aires to study orchestral tango at Escuela de Tango Emilio Balcarce at the invitation of the school’s founder. With the support of the Ian Potter Cultural Trust, she returned each year to play with the Orquesta. There she

has performed at the Biblioteca Nacional, La Casa del Tango and Clasico y Moderna, La Viruta, The Australian Embassy and live on tango radio LA2x4. In 2007, Maggie began bandoneon studies with professors including Santiago Polimeni, Camilo Ferrero and Ramiro Boero. Colour City Chamber Orchestra, led by violinist Andrew Baker, will perform with Maggie’s tango band in a coupling of Piazolla’s ‘the Four Seasons of Tango’ with Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. The audience will be taken on a journey through musical styles; from the energy and form of Vivaldi, to the suave and smokey tangos of Piazolla. The performance will take place at 8pm on Saturday November 11th at Orange Civic Theatre, with tickets available via Ticketek.

ART & MUSIC COMBO! Julie Gilmore is an artist who grew up in Orange and has held many successful exhibitions over the years in Orange and Millthorpe, both with other artists and as a solo artist. After leaving the area nine years ago, Julie now lives in Murrumbateman, near Yass. She will be having her first solo exhibition in the area again on the 8th Oct at Jayes gallery in Molong.

In an exciting collaboration, Julie’s partner, Tony Haley will be performing as part of the exhibition, with Julie joining in for a few of the songs. Tony Haley is a well-known entertainer around Canberra and Sydney, mostly known for his crooning style, but the pair will also perform popular songs from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. The exhibition will be held on Sunday 8th of October and will also include lunch.

Following mass at St Marys Church this Sunday, September 10th, the now annual Patronal Feast of Our Lady procession will take place from the church to the school hall. The statue of Our Lady was lovingly made by Orange resident Alf Lo Faro. After the procession, a celebration will take place in the school hall that includes live music, activities for the kids and a BBQ lunch. Last year’s procession was hailed a success and organisers are inviting everyone to attend again this year. The Mass will take place at 9:30 on Sunday, 10 September at St Mary’s Church, Orange.

MENTAL WELLBEING WORDS BY SENE HICKS

Meditation

Allowing the mind to rest.

Spring is here! Meditation is such a wonderful tool for promoting and maintaining emotional well-being and the start of a new season is a fabulous opportunity to establish new habits.

L

earning how to meditate can seem daunting, but you don’t have to be a meditation master to reap the benefits of a regular meditation practice. Just a couple of minutes as frequently as you can manage. But where to start? Well, there are gazillion apps and websites with sometimes paid, mostly free resources and meditation scripts that you can download, print or use through your smartphone on the go. Alternatively, you can always muster your inner Meditation Master and write your own. Writing a meditation script is as relaxing as following one and can be heaps of fun (if writing meditation scripts is something you would find fun – or not at all fun, if you’re not)! Anyway, without further ado… To welcome in the Spring, I wanted to write for you a brief meditation script. I have titled this one, ‘The Body Knows’. If you have the option, a great thing to do with a written meditation script is to simply record yourself repeating the script and that way you can enjoy the meditation without becoming distracted by a strange voice or difficult accent. If you don’t have the option to record yourself, the meditation is just as effective if you read the script silently to yourself, taking your time and keeping your eyes low 48

SEPTEMBER 7–13, 2017

and soft. The paragraph spacing in a meditation script reminds you to pause between the blocks of words. How long you pause is entirely up to you but try to pause between paragraphs for at least 10 slow breaths.

The Body Knows. Take a seat, be comfortable. Allow yourself a couple of minutes to adjust your body, adjust your clothing, and scratch those itchy places as you prepare the body for stillness. Close the eyes. When you’re ready, gently guide your awareness to the breath. Firstly, just holding your awareness at the point where the air enters your body. Notice the body drawing the air inwards. Feel the strength of the inhalation as the body draws the air into the nostrils and down deep into the centre of the body. Observe the body’s intention with the breath. The strong and deliberate intention to draw the air deep into the body centre. Notice the body’s natural ability to take only what it needs; not more, not less. Every breath is a perfect breath taken with purpose. Stay with the inhalation allowing the mind to notice the strength of the body’s intention as it draws air to the body centre. Allow the mind to notice the balance of the body drawing in with each inhalation only what the body needs in this moment. Every breath is custom made by the body,

Learning how to meditate can seem daunting, but you don’t have to be a meditation master to reap the benefits of a regular meditation practice...

always taking in only as much air as our body needs. Allow the mind to notice that in every breath the body knows what it needs. Allow the mind to rest; trusting the body. The body knows what it needs. Gently move your awareness now to the exhalation. Notice the air’s journey from the body centre and out into the atmosphere. Notice the body releasing the intention of the breath. Releasing and letting go of the air as it makes its return journey to the atmosphere outside the body. Letting go. Once the intention of the breath has been fulfilled, the body releases the air completely and without hesitation allowing the air to return to the atmosphere and completing the cycle of the breath. Releasing what is no longer needed and making room for what is. Allow the mind to notice the body’s wisdom; releasing what is no longer needed and making room for what is. Allow the mind to rest; trusting the body. The body knows what is no longer needed. Before opening your eyes, begin to move your awareness through the physical body. Notice your torso, your arms and legs. Begin to bring small movement into your body as you notice the sounds of life around you. In your mind’s eye see yourself sitting where you are, see your surroundings. Gently open the eyes.

HOW TO PLAY To solve a Sudoku puzzle, every number from 1 to 9 must appear in:  Each of the nine vertical columns  Each of the nine horizontal rows  Each of the nine 3 x 3 boxes Remember no number can occur more than once in any row, column or box.

I was born on February 22, 1983, in Nairne, South Australia. I made an early reputation as a fast bowler when I broke the cheekbone of an opponent in the under-12s. I made my first-class debut for South Australia in the 2002/03 season. I was selected in the touring squad for 2005 Ashes tour, and made my Test debut. I battled injuries over the next 18 months, keeping me out of the Test team, but was selected for the 2007 One Day Internationals World Cup. I finished as the second leading wicket taker with 23 scalps. I represented Australia again at the 2011 World Cup in India. I finished my professional career as a specialist Twenty20 player. I married Indian swimsuit model Mashoom Singha in 2014.
