FINANCE WORDS BY ROSE HODGINS

LADIES Take Charge of Your Financial Health! Compared to men, women are significantly under-insured and have lower retirement savings than men….

Australian ladies need to recognise the importance of taking control of their financial situation through seeking out financial independence and security. Regardless of your life stage, now is the best time to do so! Compared to men, women are significantly under-insured and have lower retirement savings than men – and yet their life expectancy is greater. The risk of cardio vascular disease significantly higher in females at 55% compared to 45% in males, and 1 in 4 women being diagnosed with cancer before age 75.

In the event you become sick or injured, having the right Income Protection cover in place means you will receive up to 84.5% of your income to help you meet the cost of living. This means there is only a slight reduction in your income but your bases are still covered, so you can focus on your recovery instead of the burden of finances. There are other types of cover to consider too, such as Life cover, Total and Permanent Disability and Trauma Insurance, which includes additional female-specific cancers and benefits,

MEET ROSE

designed to help you financially if you can’t work due to illness or injury. Financial independence is not only about having money and assets, it’s about not having to sell those assets or use that money if you became sick or injured, it is about being selfish (it’s a good thing!) and thinking about yourself for a change, and then creating a safety net for yourself to make sure no unforeseen event will leave you in financial peril. And remember – insurance is important for any age group. While young people tend to feel invincible

until something goes wrong, I’ve found that when it comes to insurance claims, the likelihood of a claim for younger people is quite high due to sports, jobs, and lifestyle. At PWM we have a large range of insurers to choose from, which ensures tailored solutions to getting the right insurance for you and your lifestyle, to give you peace of mind and independence. See you soon

LIFESTYLE WORDS BY ZANNA MUNRO

Tai Chi u

HAVE YOU TRIED IT?

TAI CHI ORIGINATED IN CHINA AND IS A FORM OF EXERCISE THAT FOCUSES ON EMBRACING AND NOURISHING THE MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT.

T

ai Chi is often referred to as a “meditation in motion” and there are many health benefits that can be gained from this gentle exercise practice. This week I caught up with local Tai Chi Instructor Tony Caine, and we discussed the many benefits that come from practicing this ancient Chinese tradition. “Tai Chi is a name used to cover a wide range of gentle moving exercises initially developed to keep Buddhist monks fit. Tai Chi can include sets of complicated sequences that flow into each other like a martial art form. But generally Tai Chi is taught as sets of loosely coupled movements that when

practiced can exercise your body, move most of those stiff joints and put you in a great frame of mind,” Tony said. Alleviating stiff joints is one of the many benefits that people can enjoy from this practice, and Tai Chi has been shown to reduce the risk of falls in older people. As well as the physical health benefits such as fitness and flexibility, Tony explained that Tai Chi is also beneficial for your mind. “It’s often called a moving meditation because practicing the slowly repeating gentle movements while doing simple visualizations takes your mind into a calmer place.” Serenity and inner peace are two

things that are often felt after a Tai Chi practice. It has also been shown to decrease stress levels, anxiety and depression. If trying Tai Chi has been on your list of things to do this year, winter is a great time to start! It’s a wonderful way to exercise and increase your fitness levels in a lovely warm environment. Tony said that attending classes is also a fun social outing where you can meet new friends. “Classes generally start with a short standing zen meditation as you begin to relax, mentally arrive and begin to gather your Chi energy. After a varied set of joint loosening exercises we would normally do a little balance practice maybe moving between

of his songs. He grew up surrounded by country music listeners and pickers spanning three generations and he remains a student of music for life. For Leo, playing is a much a necessary ritual as a creative pursuit or career. The popular Northern Territory country blues/roots band David Garnham & the Reasons to Live, will be in attendance. This band routinely deliverers a powerful repertoire of original material ranging from toe-tappers and thigh-slappers to sentimental moments you’d like to keep for yourself. David Garnham, one of Darwin’s best-known and popular singer-songwriters, crafts songs that weave love, loss, heartbreak and humour into a particular brand of whisky-soaked nostalgia that is awash with alt-country contradictions. Much-loved local Orange singersongwriter Haylee Gallagher will also perform with her original and quirky musical blend. This promises to be a night of great Americana music and is not to be missed. The concert starts at 7pm with tickets available at Landers Music or on-line at www.ticketebo. com.au/jamorange

A R T S It is inevitable, when you live in the country in a continent as vast as ours, that you spend many hours and kilometres in a car, driving. We drive for family, friends and social events, we drive for sporting & cultural stuff, we drive for shopping trips, medical appointments, and we drive because we have to. To be honest, it can be tiresome, and takes hours out of your day, week, your productivity. BUT for me - a guilty secret. Most of the time it is a quiet pleasure. When my hubby drives, I spend my time in the passenger seat dozing through half closed heavy lidded eyes. Light flickers through, trees blur by, and the rocking of the car lulls me to dream and think, and imagine. Telegraph poles, green and golden fields, they all move by at rapid pace while my mind wanders. When I am not dozing and dreaming, I am admiring the views, the vistas, the light, the colours, the shapes, the way the golden clear light creates halos around trees & weeds, the long shadows, & the lonely trees surrounded by an island of crops. Huge endless skies, whether grey, blue, or looking like magical fairy floss as dusk falls. After almost two decades of living here, I am still thrilled by the beauty of this place, the Central West of NSW. It is never boring - the change of weather, time, crops and seasons ensures that. As a result of this love of place, it is not uncommon for me to be randomly pulling over into the verge to take photos. I often have one of my cameras with me (Canon 60D or Olympus OMD) & always my phone (Samsung Note 5). All of the photos here have been taken with one of these. If I do not have a camera on me, I feel a bit bereft actually!

And it is not unusual then for me to take twice as long for me to get home as it does to arrive anywhere, because with appointment and commitments met, I am free to dawdle and stop along the way to get a shot I like. A line of trees, a windmill, a lovely crop, a windy road… When I look back on these photos I see they tell the story of the journey, of the places “between here and there,” the unknown, unnamed, unnoticed, quiet spaces between places. Not the destination itself that matters. If I was going to get a bit deep, I could say... this is not unlike life itself, eh? And so, what to do with all these photos? Well, from an initial pool of about 600 pics, I edited, and culled, and edited, and culled. And squeezed it down to about 35 photos. Why? Because well, they have become an exhibition. They have become something hanging on walls, printed professionally on archival rag paper, framed and on display. They have become a thing I am sharing with others, which is always a bit nerve wracking! Will they see the beauty in the blur and the movement, and the golden light? Will they scoff instead? Well, really, all that matters is that I love them, and for me they tell the authentic story of how I get between the here and the there... and the bits in between! Shani’s exhibition, Between Here and There, is at Japanese Gardens and Cultural Centre, Ken Nakajima Way Cowra, NSW, for the month of July 2017. It features images from across the Central West and it really is a visual treat! Shani is an artist and the owner of Rare Pear Studio, find her at https://www.facebook.com/rarepear

9 HOW TO PLAY To solve a Sudoku puzzle, every number from 1 to 9 must appear in:  Each of the nine vertical columns  Each of the nine horizontal rows  Each of the nine 3 x 3 boxes Remember no number can occur more than once in any row, column or box.

I was born on August 12, 1971, in Potomac, Maryland, USA. My liking for tennis grew soon after my family moved to California in 1978. At age 14 my playing style took inspiration from Rod Laver. I turned professional at 16. At 19, I brought Ivan Lendl’s winning streak of US Open finals to an end – it was the first of my 14 Grand Slam titles. After replacing Jim Courier at the top of the rankings in 1993, I began my US Open domination. I won seven titles in eight years on the Wimbledon grass. Further Grand Slam titles included Australia in 1994 and 1997. Aussie Ken Rosewall and I are the only male players to win a major title as a teen, in our 20s and in our 30s. I am married to American actress Bridgette Wilson.
