WELCOME T H I S came from newcomers to Orange who I met at a dog event last weekend. They said firstly how great their new town is and how helpful OC Life has been in helping them find things to do and further feel a part of our community.

Our 3 week Christmas break is fast approaching and I gotta tell you, I can’t wait! I’m pooped! The whole team has been working their butts off to produce this quality publication each week and they deserve a lot of the credit for what seen by you each week. And, I suppose, they deserve a break too! The refresher will allow us all to refresh and attack the new year with even more gusto! Not a week goes by that at least a few people don’t tell us, in one way or another, just how much they appreciate Orange City Life but last week it seemed to happen even more. One rather encouraging comment

Over the last few years we’ve run a Christmas Competition called What’s in the Box and in doing so, have given away some great prizes like a Webber BBQ and a Hoselink Retractable Hose unit. This year we’re doing something a bit different, we call it 3 Little Christmas Words and there’ll be a swag of mouth-watering hams to win just in time for Christmas. Grab next week’s OC Life to find out how to win. Our popular Colour City Window Hanger competition has continued to gain momentum since we introduced it a couple of years back. he building itself has been the talking point of many but I personally think it’s fantastic; that sloped grass roof is unique and I’d love to know the number of visitors that have already climbed up there for a look around. There are plenty who thought the money could have been better spent elsewhere but I disagree; we have a long and wonderful history in this town and we needed a place to showcase it. For me, the only issue is, potentially, it’s not big

enough! But it’s great nonetheless. You’ll see from Troy Pearson’s wonderful photos, that OC Life and other media outlets were given a sneak peek last week; staff still had a mountain of work to do prior to Saturday and it’s a credit to them that it all went so well on the day! I WANT BETTER!

he Orange byelection has finally been decided and although the last thing I want to do is dwell on it, I believe something important needs to be said. I believe the way our local media reported this election was disgraceful, unbalanced, irresponsible, lacked integrity and in the end, possibly helped deliver an outcome that time may show not to be in the best interests of the Orange community. The fact remains, although much, and probably most of the reporting focused on the notion that “the people have spoken” and “people were not happy with this or that” etc., the reality is that roughly half the population voted the other way. For months, we’ve been bombarded with negative or unhelpful reporting, most coming from people with an axe to grind. The media has had a fi eld day giving complaining, whinging or unhappy voters or groups a mountain of airtime or newspaper space. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that provided there’s balance in the media coverage, and to my eye there wasn’t. I honestly don’t care who won, such is my interest in politics, but what I do care about is the way the media can cause a community to feel “so lousy” through their reporting, simply by highlighting all things negative and not providing adequate balance with more responsible reporting. Why that’s very important to me, and should be to all

of us, is that when people feel lousy, they stop doing things they might otherwise do, and when that happens it can financially hurt a community, like Orange. To say we could be talking about millions of dollars in lost sales potential, may not be an over-statement. The “things” I’m talking about includes anything that involves people spending money at local businesses, events etc. I think we’d all agree that happy and contented people are more likely to spend money than unhappy people and it’s for this reason the media, including ourselves, has a responsibility to do everything it can to keep people feeling happy and contented. No one will convince me that this can’t be achieved by reporting positive or balanced news along with the stories and headlines that are produced for no other reason than to stir people up. Stories that only give slanted, selective or brief information or that the media knows will get people’s backs up and get them talking, at least for a while, or until the true or full story comes out. I would love to see more media groups adopt Orange City Life’s mission statement or ideal of trying to “bring out the best in people”, not the worst, as appears to be happening far too often now. There’ll always be people who agree or disagree with almost anything, but if we want to see and hear better, more helpful news reporting and less beating us up with bad news that may be doing us more hidden damage than we realise, maybe it’s time we all made a stand and demanded better. ow in its 29th year, the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal is Australia’s largest and longest running Christmas gift Appeal, supporting families and individuals who are unable to provide gifts at Christmas. Through the generosity of Australians and their charity partners, The Salvation Army and Mission Australia, the Appeal has collected over 8 million gifts and this year, aims to help over 300,000 families. We are so proud of the long-standing history of the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal and the tradition it has become.” The Salvation Army is the founding Appeal partner and spokesperson, Major Paul Hateley explained that Christmas can be a challenging time for Australian families who feel the strain of not being able to afford gifts for their loved ones.

“During December, The Salvation Army assists three times more people compared to any other month due to increased budget pressure at Christmas. Extra bills, back-to-school costs, special meals and holiday activities for the children are added on to everyday living expenses. The last thing families can afford is often presents for the children and this is devastating for a parent. With the help of Kmart and the generosity of Australians nationwide, we are able to provide gifts to those who would

otherwise go without at Christmas and bring hope where it’s needed most,” says Major Hateley. Mission Australia will once again provide an avenue to assist even more Australians, by coming on board as a partner for a second year. Mission Australia CEO Catherine Yeomans said, “Across the country, we see thousands of people in our services who can find Christmas to be an especially difficult, stressful and sometimes isolating, time of the year. The contribution of gifts and funds

from the Appeal will help people and families to participate in Christmas celebrations with dignity and joy.” The Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal will officially run until Christmas Eve. There are many ways Australians can take part in the Appeal: gifts do not need to be purchased at Kmart, nor do they need to be wrapped. You can donate simply by placing a gift under a Kmart Wishing, making a monetary contribution at any Kmart register or by donating online at www.kmart. com.au/wishingtree

COMMUNITY STAGES 24HR TREADMILL RELAY TO RAISE AWARENESS

Orange Police Supporting White Ribbon Day

he Orange NSW White Ribbon Day Committee’s fantastic event to help raise awareness and much needed funds to support White Ribbon Australia’s work to end men’s violence against women, is on today! 50% of funds raised will go to White Ribbon Australia to support primary prevention initiatives in schools, workplaces and the broader community and 50% will support Local Domestic Violence initiatives administered by Housing Plus. Teams from across the Orange community will keep one of the treadmills turning for one hour each, totalling 24 hours. Teams from all walks of life, businesses, schools, government and non-government organisations have signed up, volunteering their time to raise awareness about violence against women and the messages of the White Ribbon campaign. The Relay will step off at 12:00pm on Thursday the 24th of November in the South Court - Near the Orange Regional Museum, Corner of Peisley and Byng Streets, Orange. Senior Constable Granton Smith is the Domestic Violence Liaison officer at Orange Police station. He is very passionate about the subject of Domestic and family violence and will be participating in the relay. Senior Constable Smith said “Violence against women is at epidemic proportions.

Devastatingly, over 12 months, on average, one woman is killed every week in Australia as a result of intimate partner violence. The women lost are not just statistics – they are wives, mothers, daughters, grand-daughters, sisters, aunts, nieces, friends and colleagues. “There are many behaviours that characterise violence against women, including financial, verbal, emotional, psychological, physical and sexual abuse, as well as workplace harassment. They all form part of a devastating cycle of violence. “Violence against women should not be a private issue. We are holding this event to help break the silence around violence, to raise awareness of the issue. “There will be lots to see and do during the 24hrs of the Treadmill Relay. We would love to have people visit anytime, and check out some of our side show activities. People need to know that they can make a difference; White Ribbon is all about encouraging people to stand up, speak out and act to prevent men’s violence against women.” 50% of funds raised will go to White Ribbon Australia and 50% will support Local Domestic Violence initiatives administered by Housing Plus. THANKS TO THE LATEST ROUND OF GRANTS AWARDED BY NEWCASTLE PERMANENT CHARITABLE FOUNDATION, ORANGE’S WOMEN’S SHED FACILITY WILL BE RECEIVING A $50,000 UPGRADE.

n Thursday 17th November, the local primary school stage 3 students, Conservation Volunteers and the council, joined together to plant approximately 30 new trees to revive the Dakers Oval area situated at the end of Ogilvy Street, along the Belubula River. Dakers Oval is a popular local cricket ground and recreation facility in Blayney. Councillor and Chairman of the Blayney Shire Sports Council, David Kingham said: “The River Rescue program is a community engagement investment to provide benefits to Council, our community and the environment. The focus of the project is to plant 30 native trees to reestablish the area for recreation and nature regeneration. “It is fabulous to see local school students joining volunteers to improve the habitat for local residents and other users as well as local fauna including frogs, birds and possums,” Councillor Kingham said. Working in collaboration with Conservation Volunteers NSW, the River Rescue program also aims to educate students on the value of preserving and protecting the natural environment in a fun setting. The Council crew was available to provide valuable local knowledge about flora and fauna in the area through ‘walk and talk’ sessions throughout the morning.“This is a great opportunity to share the passion of outdoors and nature with local children, encouraging young Australians to take an active interest in our environment.” “As the habitat grows to maturity, it is anticipated local wildlife will be attracted to the site which will be a positive community and tourist attraction in years to come,” he said.

What in the world is objectivity? A simple sentence can sometimes cause your universe to crumble if you delve deep enough. But nevermind – it’s all an illusion. “The objective world simply is.” This unassuming sentence jumped out at me during a reading binge yesterday, which made me wonder: what the heck is objective in a world which no-one fully understands? Delve into the rabbit hole of science or mathematics just an inch and you’ll soon be facing an existential crisis. Consider the mind-bending (and time-bending…and space bending) consequences of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. Einstein showed that the speed of light within a vacuum is the same regardless of the speed at which an observer travels. The consequence? Space and time are interwoven into a single continuum known as “spacetime”. Events which occur at the same time for one observer can occur at diff erent times for another. Thus, we can’t even say for sure what happens in the “now”, since it’s completely relative. Relative to what? Where you are in space, your velocity and which direction you’re moving in. We don’t notice this here on Earth since we can’t travel fast enough or get far enough away from each other for these eff ects to be visible. Skipping the big stuff and delving into micro-world of quantum physics leads to only more confusion. Space is the most elusive thing of all – and yet it encompasses everything and is the fabric holding our universe together. How the seeming “nothingness” (ha!) of space works is still largely not understood. Take gravity, for example. According to the rules of gravity, the expansion of the universe should be slowing down, while in actual fact it’s accelerating. The

acceleration of the universe’s expansion is not due to the planets and stars moving apart, but due to the accelerated expansion of space itself. Science refers to this mysterious force as “dark energy” (or “repulsive gravity”) and we still have very little understanding about how it works. If it continues, the entire universe in billions of years will rip apart into pieces. At least we can rest safely in the world of mathematics, right? Not really. The world of fractions, for example, is completely relative. Take a pie cut into 6 pieces. Remove one piece and maths now tells us we have 5/6ths. But relative to what? The whole pie, of course. Yet I just ate the other damn piece, so it no longer exists in its previous form. So, do I now have 5/6ths, or a new whole? Along the same lines, does one plus one always equal two? No. At the most basic level, the fact that atoms join to form molecules proves this to be untrue. Take oxygen, for example, where it takes two oxygen atoms to create one oxygen molecule. In a world where we can explain very little: time is relative, maths tells lies, space is mysteriously expanding and this whole experience is possibly an illusion, what the heck do we know about objectivity? Perhaps I’ll just quit reading, since it’s clearly dangerous. Not now though, since “now” is purely relative.

These gifts will go to the Christmas Toy Run, which is supporting the Salvation Army who are supporting underprivileged children and children in need. It is asked, that if you donate a present, that is not to be wrapped. This is so the Salvation Army can determine whether it’s a boy or girl receiving the gift and whether it is age appropriate. The toy run is on the 4th of December, beginning at Cameron place at 10am Capitol Motorcycles, Ulysses motorcycle club and Harley Owners Group will get the presents and parade up to Emus Rugby Club. Once there, they will have a presentation with Manager of Salvation Army of Orange, David Grounds, all the presents will then get distributed to the children. Bring the family down, there will be a barbeque and some great prizes to be won! Keep in mind the Motorcycle Clubs need to be able to ride with the presents, though any donation is much appreciated! Apples & Trees Don’t whinge about the ‘youth’ of today-instead, ask where did they learn all those things?

egular readers already know this, and new readers, don’t judge … yes, I am a huge fan of the TV show ‘Survivor’ (I said, don’t judge). There have been 33 series of this awesome reality show from the USA, and recently the second version of ‘Australian Survivor’ went to air. It wasn’t as good as the American one, but still satisfied my weekly cravings for Tribal Council, Immunity Idols and the scrambles amongst the players to throw others under the bus so they can save themselves. The current US series is called Gen X versus Millennials. On arrival at the island the would-be millionaires were split into two teams, one with players in their thirties and above, and the other team with all the young ‘dudes’. The premise behind splitting the groups like this was to determine if the so-called ways of life of the different eras were more suited to this very artificial world. Supposedly, Gen X-ers spend more time planning, considering, looking to the future, weighing up consequences and being part of a team. Also supposedly, Millennials (born from 1990 on) are more likely to have shorterterm goals, be impulsive, less considered in their decision making and more cutthroat in their dealing, putting instant gratification above the needs of others and the consequences of their actions. I’ll beg to differ on these hard and fast classifications, as I believe there is more to the ‘Apples don’t fall far from Trees’ theory regarding those chucked into the Millennial pile. Anyway, back to Survivor. The castaways were given a feast as a treat after reaching the halfway mark of the show, with all players filling their bellies and carb-loading for the rough days ahead. One of the young players woke up

in the middle of the night and raided the leftover food supply (meant to be shared by all over the coming week), where he proceeded to bury a whole pile of the food in jars in the bush for his own use. His (illconceived short-term) plan was to stay fed and strong whilst the others wasted away. Well, I’m sure you can guess … of course the others found out and they weren’t very sympathetic to his ‘Millennial’ ways, they just voted his butt straight off the island (yay). Instead of showing remorse as the others planned to get rid of him, he even taunted them by saying he gorged on the last of the hidden food just before the final exit showdown. Where did he learn this behaviour? He wasn’t ‘born’ with it, it’s not an innate quality, he’s picked it up somewhere. Where is the most likely place to pick up the behaviours that you model … from your own lounge room or dinner table, says I. This poor ‘dude’ is only a Millennial because of what he learnt over the 18 years of his life—as I said, Apples don’t fall far from Trees. Recently I’ve been in two situations in darkened theatres watching wonderful performances. Whilst the notice of ‘no cameras’ was clearly given, one (Gen-X?) audience member just couldn’t resist the urge to take some pics of a relative as they graced the stage. Too bad about us who abided by the rules, but had to put up with your phone’s bright lights whilst we tried to watch. Apples and Trees. Then there were the mums who had finished watching their flesh and blood have their moment, so they thought it was ok to check emails and messages whilst the other performers strutted their stuff. Trees make Apples, Gen X-ers make Millennials. How else do they learn?

DESTINATION NSW: ORANGE LEADING THE WAY IN REGIONAL DOMESTIC TOURISM New tourism entity joint venture between Brand Orange and Orange City Council to build on success.

ccording to the latest domestic tourism figures released by Destination NSW, the Orange region is leading the way for Central NSW tourism with substantial increases to both visitation and spend. Destination NSW recently held an Industry Development workshop in Orange, open to local tourism and hospitality providers, where the results of their domestic tourism visitor research and statistics for 2016

A total of 1,079,000 visitors were recorded to Orange, Blayney and Cabonne during year ending June 2016, compared to 884,000 visitors year ending June 2015, representing a 22% increase. A 23% increase in visitor spend during that period has also been recorded, growing from $218m, June 2015 to $269m, June 2016. “Feedback from the State tourism body, Destination NSW, is that the Orange region is leading the way in regional domestic tourism across NSW, and these figures from Destination NSW clearly support that statement,” says Rhonda Sear, Executive Officer, Brand Orange. Momentum continues to build positively towards establishing a joint tourism venture between Brand Orange Board and Orange City Council, with a motion for forming a Transition Board with representation from Brand Orange and Council, for the proposed new entity approved by Councillors on Tuesday 15 November. It has been agreed that Brand Orange will nominate the Chairperson for the Transition

Board. Brand Orange will continue operating in its current form until 30 June 2017, when it is envisaged the new tourism entity will be finalised and then launched. Input into the new entity’s tourism strategy for the Orange region will be incorporated from the results of industry stakeholder feedback obtained through two Industry Tourism Workshops hosted by Orange City Council in August this year. “We will ensure that our priority is given to the work of the transitional Board, whilst Brand Orange continues to deliver in the promotion of our region” says Peter Robson, Chair of Brand Orange Board, “We cannot afford to rest on our laurels and it is critical to ensure we are one united industry-led voice and we continue to remain ahead of the pack”. f there’s one thing certain to strike fear and trepidation into many gardeners, it’s the challenge of a working compost heap. With a little know how, some basic backyard science, and the simplest of materials, you’ll be well on your way to making gardeners gold. Having composted for years, read the science and experimented with a myriad of methods, I now opt for a tried and tested best bet method of composting. It really is very simple when you know how. It’s also tremendously rewarding when you can transform waste into a valuable garden input! I am reminded of a sign that appeared in Esther Deans famous No Dig Garden in Sydney ‘To forget how to dig the earth and to tend the soil is to forget ourselves’. A Mahatma Gandhi quote I believe… Philosophical ponderings aside, adding compost to soil is one of the best ways to improve the water holding capacity of soils, the aeration of soils and provide a source of slow release nutrients. It’s a gift that keeps on giving. Getting back to practicalities, it helps to consider your

compost heap as a bacteria farm, since bacteria are the main workers in any compost heap. They do the work of breaking down plant material into food for plants, a perfect form of recycling. By getting conditions right for the bacteria, breakdown of plant material is assured. So, what do the decomposer bacteria like? Warm conditions, moisture and a steady diet of brown plant based things (the carbon component) and green plant based things (the nitrogen component). Before you glaze over with perhaps not so fond memories of high school chemistry and periodic tables, stay with me, just get the proportion of green to brown more or less right, keep the heap warm and moist and it’ll most likely work out fine. For the green component use kitchen scraps, leafy prunings, weeds and some lawn clippings but no more than say a 10cm layer of lawn clippings at a time as they mat down and prevent air circulating in the heap. For the brown use ripped up brown cardboard, sawdust, sugar cane mulch, toilet rolls or stored autumn leaves. You should

aim to add about 2 parts brown to 1 part green components to your heap. This is where most backyard compost heaps come unstuck. Way too much lawn clippings and kitchen scraps and just not enough dry brown material. Keep the heap moist not wet, by adding water to every 10 or 15cm layer as you continue to build your heap. If the brewing compost becomes

sour smelling you know that the PH is out of whack so just add half a cup or so of garden lime to a standard one metre compost heap and give it a good mix to aerate the heap. Bacteria are fussy when it comes to PH. It’s also a good idea to add a thin layer of soil or finished compost to a working heap as this tops up the bacteria populations and keeps things breaking down extra fast. I am

a covered heap proponent as open heaps just bring mice and rats and other things that are quite happy to feed on your kitchen scraps; though I do keep an open heap for garden weeds to which I add horse manure and pelletised poultry manure. A working heap can’t be rushed and three months is a feasible timeframe to produce that gardeners’ gold – homemade compost.

ater is our most precious and important resource. We need it to survive! Did you know our bodies are about 70% water, and our brains are around 80% water? Water is used and needed in the body in a variety of ways. It cushions and lubricates joints, nourishes and protects the brain, spinal cord and other tissues and keeps our body temperature cool. Water is important for our body’s detoxification process because it helps to eliminate toxins and waste through perspiration, bowel movements and urination. Many people who are constipated or who have sluggish and slow bowel movements are often dehydrated and need to drink more water. How do we know when we need more water? If you feel thirsty it means you are often already dehydrated. Daytime fatigue also suggests that you need more water. A drop in body water can also trigger short-term memory issues and

problems with concentration and focus. We need to continuously drink water with the average daily recommendation being 2 litres per day. However, if you are exercising that amount increases. Our thirst mechanism is often so weak that it is common to confuse feeling hungry with actually being thirsty. Next time you feel hungry instead of reaching for something to eat try having a large glass of fresh water and see if that helps. If you’re working towards a bikini body for summer, water is a beneficial tool for weight loss because it helps to naturally suppress our appetite. It also helps the body metabolize stored fat. Many people don’t like the flavour of water so they choose to rehydrate with soft drinks, coffee or black tea. But these beverages actually steal huge amounts of water from the body. If you don’t like the flavour of water try infusing it with fresh berries. It tastes amazing and you are also drinking all those beautiful antioxidants and nutrients from the

berries. They are in season now so it’s the perfect time to try this; it makes a lovely refreshing drink to enjoy in spring. TWELVE MONTHS AGO, KRIS LEAR AND SUZI WELCH BEGAN DEVELOPING A CREATIVE EDUCATIONAL PROJECT THAT THEY HOPED WOULD BE INCLUSIVE OF ALL PEOPLE OF ALL ABILITIES, AGES AND BACKGROUNDS.

the inaugural Orange Luminosity event will light up the Botanic Gardens this Friday from 6.30pm. The evening will feature music and dance performances, art installations, food stalls, and will culminate in a lantern parade lead by the giant Rainbow Serpent Lantern created by local school and workshop participants especially for the event. Short films will be aired throughout

the evening documenting the journey of Luminosity 2016. Everyone is welcome to bring their own lantern (no naked flames) and be a part of the lantern parade, or you can buy a Glow stick on the night. The event will go ahead as planned rain or shine – wet weather venue details will be available on the Luminosity Orange NSW Facebook page.

Canobolas High School Clontarf Academy Clontarf is a not-for-profit organisation that exists to improve the education, discipline, self-esteem, life skills and employment prospects of young Aboriginal men and by doing so, equip them to participate more meaningfully in society. Clontarf assists in ways to get the boys to engage more effectively in the school and take ownership for their education. The program is part of our school culture, helping us work with the boys to build trust and positive relationships. Healthy lifestyle is a key part of this program, with nutrition and exercise programs built in. All of our enrolled and attending male Aboriginal students are able to access the Clontarf Academy. Using a comprehensive approach of supportive relationships, a welcoming environment, and a diverse range of activities, the students develop improved self-esteem and confidence. Academy activities are planned within the focus areas of education, leadership, employment, healthy lifestyles, life skills and football. In order to remain in the programme, participants must continue to work at school and embrace the objectives of the Foundation. Upon completing the programme, graduates are helped to find employment. Specialist Employment Officers are engaged to do this and provide support until graduates become comfortable with their new jobs and surroundings. 24

WHAT IS IT THAT WOULD COMPEL A YOUNG ORANGE WOMEN WITH A DEGREE AND HIGH PAYING JOB, TO THROW IT ALL AWAY AND MOVE TO IRELAND TO TELL PEOPLE ABOUT JESUS?

hat’s a question I’m sure a lot of people would like to ask Catherine Read, because that’s exactly what she did several years ago. For the last few years, Cath has been working with Uni students in Ireland as part of what is called the Christian Union. She’s recently finished her time there and is now back in Orange to get some R & R and then to determine the next phase of her life. Her story is very interesting, especially hearing about the religious culture in Ireland which is so different to what we experience here in Australia. I thought it would be good to let Cath, in her own words,

The Bible says that God demonstrates His love for us in that while we were rejecting and ignoring Him, Christ died for us so that we might be completely forgiven and given true life in relationship with Him. This news of God’s amazing love and forgiveness through Jesus had a profound impact on me as a teenager and continues to do so today. From a young age God convicted me of the need for

In the past few years, many students in Ireland have encountered Jesus afresh through reading a biographical account of Jesus’ life and teaching in the Gospel of Luke. I’ve returned to Orange, but dearly miss my friends and the people I met in Ireland.”

hen you’re a musicloving guitarist who has played professionally for fifteen years, it would come as no surprise if you felt a niggling desire to challenge yourself, push your musical boundaries to the extreme and explore innovative ways of “mixing it up” to uncover rich new sounds. This was the case for popular musician Ben McGarity, who two years ago began investing his time in the creative realm of “live looping,” shaping a unique sound which has now become his personal trademark. “I started out from boredom. Pure boredom. I’d been playing pure acoustic solo gigs for many years and figured I needed something to spice it up a little. Looping adds an entire new set of parameters to performing. At once it has become more complex, yet also it has become simplified. There are limitations to using a looper, so you’re forced to work inside that ‘box’ while constant looking for little ways to break it.” For those of us who are less knowledgeable about music, a looper is simply a small device that allows a small section of sound to be live-recorded and played repeatedly, in a continuous “loop”. If I’m distracted by the tiniest thing whilst creating a loop, the timing will be off and the loop flies down the proverbial toilet!” Ben’s live looping skills led to him performing at Orange’s first TEDx event in 2015, where he set himself a bold challenge to improvise his piece in front of a live global audience. In what appeared to be effortless, he achieved every musician’s ultimate goal of having an entire audience on the edge of their seats. “I absolutely loved the Tedx opportunity! I was very nervous, but confident I could pull it off. I was still relatively new to the technique at that point. I just find it so enjoyable - it has reinvigorated my passion for performing live.” You can experience Ben’s rich, full sound using layers of meticulously crafted intertwining live loops from 8.30pm, Saturday 26th at Orange Ex-Services Club.

BACK TO BURRA BEE DEE

n the early 1890’s, an Aboriginal woman by the name of Mary Jane Cain wrote a letter to Queen Victoria’s representative in Australia, asking for some land to be given back to the Aboriginal people of the Coonabarabran area. This, she stated, would enable the Aboriginal community to become independent and self-sustaining. In response to this request, the Governor bequeathed a total of 600 acres to Mary with the proviso that it be shared and utilised for the good of

the entire Aboriginal community. Artist Warwick Keen is the great, great grandson of Mary Jane Cain, who is now regarded as being the original founder of those 600 acres known as Burra Bee Dee. Warwick’s exhibition of digitally refashioned photographs of the Burra Bee Dee area celebrates Mary Cain’s story and that of the Aboriginal community from the Coonabarabran area of New South Wales. In 2013, Warwick won the COFA Aboriginal Arts Residency Award in

the Parliament of NSW Aboriginal Art Prize, of which the Burra Bee Dee project is a direct result. The Burra Bee Dee exhibition merges old images Warwick received from family members with his contemporary landscape photographs, to capture a rich history and instil an emotional connection for the viewer through this remarkable body of art. The Back to Burra Bee Dee exhibition will be on display at Orange Regional Gallery until 4 December.

A FEAST OF SONG A Feast of Song brings together the music of two highly accomplished Australian singer-songwriters, Genni Kane and Bruce Watson. Genni is the powerful voice of the ARIA award winning Flying Emus, one of Australia’s premier bluegrass-country acts of the 80’s, while Bruce is an Australian songwriter in the folk tradition, known for his witty lyrics and energetic presentation.
