WELCOME T H I S it once was, it does beg the question about paying the bill for something I don’t actually have… I mean, you don’t pay for meals that don’t arrive, why should I have to pay for a service I don’t have? Any advice appreciated.

How about that sunshine? It has been a welcome change, hasn’t it? Without trying to alarm anyone, the very slight raise in the temperature this week brings about another ‘issue’. By the time you read this, there will be less than 135 days till Christmas! The year is flying by. Anyone else having internet/ phone issues? Up around my place the workers are doing something with the NBN and it has disrupted our internet outrageously. My poor kids can’t even get their daily Netflix dose… We’ve not had a landline for pretty much three weeks now and whilst in the mobile age that’s not the huge problem

This Monday, (15th) will see the Orange RSL Sub-Branch conduct a service at the cenotaph in Robertson Park commencing at 11am, to commemorate VP day. VP (Victory in the Pacific) Day, also referred to as VJ (Victory over Japan) Day, is celebrated on 15 August each year. This date commemorates Japan’s acceptance of the Allied demand for unconditional surrender on the 14th August, 1945. For Australians, it meant that the Second World War was finally over. Head down and pay your respects.

As the Olympics are well under-way in Rio, Kinross Wolaroi Prep school hosted their own mini Olympics, in support of former student, Orange’s own Edwina Bone. Hurdles, Hockey, soccer with a twist and putt putt golf were a few of the sporting activities in operation during a recent lunchtime. With each student donating $2, it is estimated that a total of $500 was

raised for their Green and Gold Day. These funds will go towards a charity of Edwina’s choosing - yet to be confirmed. A fantastic effort in itself, speaking with school captain, Sameeka L’Estrange, “I am very proud of everyone, it was a successful day, everyone joined in and got involved in the sports we had organised.” Awesome effort Kinross! ath Thompson leaves the Orange Farmers Market this month after being Market Manager for 10 years. “I’ve had a long association with the Orange Farmers Market, first attending as a customer not long after the markets were established in 2002 when we moved to Orange and then as the Market Manager in 2006 - so it’s been an integral part of my life here. “I’ve enjoyed meeting and getting to know the producers over the years and seeing the region develop and other markets follow our lead. “I’m really proud of what’s been achieved with the various stallholders/ committees during my tenure and the strong reputation the market has been awarded. We continue to strive to ensure authenticity in all we do each month and keep a close check on what’s coming into the market, following a strong charter which assists us in the application process, when deciding on candidates attending. “The market has grown over the years I’ve been involved – from 40-50 stallholders we now regularly have 65-70 plus stallholders depending on seasonality with the April market (FOOD Week) seeing a record number of stallholders (80) and crowds in attendance. “For me it’s simple – it’s all about the people, the produce and the place it comes from and I’ve been incredibly proud to have been a part of it”.

arely a week goes by in our office that our Managing Editor Jamie Stedman doesn’t blurt out something along the lines of “I’ve got too many stories and too little space!” Fact is, space in a magazine like ours costs money and despite what a lot of people may think, there are times when we simply have to leave things out of our magazine to keep the production costs under control. Then, even with the available space, it can sometimes be challenging to do a story justice, especially if you have say 1000 words of story to go in and the available space to fit only about half that. Such are the challenges Jamie faces each week. That’s the bad news. The good news is this. We’ve just added a new section to our website where we can now give coverage to more of the things people will want to read. Of course the stories we put on our website may not always appear in the magazine itself, due to timing or the space constraints I mentioned earlier, or something else, but at least we’ll be able

to help more people get their information out to our readers, and on a more regular basis. Ben, can we put a screen shot in here with the NEWS EXTRA tab? ALL ABILITIES GALA DAY

ast week PCYC Orange was host to schools from around the Central West including, Wellington, Dubbo, Kelso, Forbes, Bathurst and of course Orange as they got involved in the annual ‘All Abilities Gala Day’. Netball NSW West/Central West regional coordinator Mardi Aplin said, “It really is teaching them the game of Netball, it gives them a chance to get out of the classroom, enjoy the moment and participating.” Now in its fourth year, Mardi says the All Abilities Gala Day would not be possible without the help of James Sheahan Catholic High and Orange High school students, as they volunteer their day in helping with the demonstration, skills and foundation of the day. There was not a frown in sight as we snapped some photos of Anson Street School students enjoying the activities.

AS I’VE MENTIONED BEFORE IN THESE SEGMENTS, I LIKE A PERSON WITH A PASSION FOR WHAT THEY DO. REAL, GENUINE PASSION. SO IMAGINE MY EXCITEMENT IN FINDING OUT ABOUT MURRAY FLETCHER, AN INSECT TAXONOMIST AND ENTOMOLOGIST WHO WAS DESCRIBED TO ME AS ‘A BLOKE WITH A GANDALF BEARD WHO’S REALLY OBSESSED WITH BUGS.’ NEEDING NO FURTHER CONVINCING, I SOUGHT OUT MURRAY AT HIS HOME WITH A SPARKLE IN MY EYE AND A SMALL TEAM OF

When did you first become interested in insects? “I was interested in animals when I was a child, and my mother told me stories about how when I was 3 years old I’d used to go and rescue ants from puddles after it rained. A lot of the animals I was interested in like lions and elephants and such weren’t available to me but insects were, so it’s been a lifelong passion. I was lucky I could get a job as an entomologist, really.”

as a taxonomist anyway.” How did you become an entomologist? “When I was finishing my PhD a job from the Department of Agriculture popped up, a position in the Department’s collection of insects so I applied and managed to get the job on a 3-year probation, but eventually I was made permanent and I stayed there for about 34 years, doing research and publishing papers before I eventually retired. I still have a position there as a visiting scientist so I still go out there for a couple of days a week.”

What type of education did you have? “I went through university doing mainly science and maths before getting an Honours Degree in Entomology and then went on to earn a PhD on insects. I was interested in taxonomy, which is the classification and identification of insects, but due to my Honours, my colleagues advised me to go into something more biological like embryology, which was all well and good, and then I got a job

What interests you about taxonomy? “I really like the creativity of it. For starters you’re discovering something new which is always exciting and you’ve got a lot of room for creativity in the naming of a new species ‘cause you can pretty much name it anything. I often like to name a species ‘Utopia’

since ‘Nirvana’, a related word, is a genus of leafhoppers, which are my favourite insect. There’s a guy in Hawaii who’s made some great names, there’s a genus called phthiria, and he found a new species of that and called it relativitae, so phthiria relativitae sounds like ‘the theory of relativity’.” Have you discovered or named any insects? “I don’t know how many I’ve named so far… it’s over 100 I know that, but that’s modest compared to some people. The speed depends on getting the papers out about the discovery and any illustrations need to be done by hand, which nowadays I have to do myself so it can take a while. When identifying new species, with leafhoppers at least, the same species will always have the same genitalia since it’s essential for the species to mate and survive, so when the genitalia is different, it’s either a mutation or a new species. I actually have five species of insect named after

me too, a mite by an old colleague at university, one by a Russian bloke, one by a guy in Belgium and two former students named species after me.” What is the importance of taxonomy to agriculture/the world? “Australia regularly gets new foreign insect species at its borders, most of which are easily identifiable. But there’s a lot of insect species that look identical so it takes specialists to identify them and assess what kind of threat it has to the ecosystem or our agriculture. There could be a species of aphid native to Australia that is harmless or easily counteracted but there could be an identical-looking species that isn’t native and poses a serious threat.” What are you up to these days? “Well, I’m still involved at the Department, as I said, but I’m involved in all sorts of clubs as well. I’m a member of the Orange Friends of the Botanic Gardens, the Orange

Field Naturalists, the NSW Scientific Community, the Environmental Sustainability Committee, the Parks, Trees and Waterways Committee and I was on the board of the Australian Entomological Society. So yeah, I tend to keep myself busy. There’s still papers to write as well, plus the occasional scientific excursion. It’s very fulfilling to be able to do what I love essentially all the time, really.” I love that there are so many people in this town who have contributed so much to the fields of sports, science and entertainment. For one, it keeps me employed, but mainly it’s because almost all of them have been veritable cornucopias of knowledge and enthusiasm, with Murray being my absolute favourite so far. Here’s a man who for his all his life was obsessed with something and managed not only to successfully base his entire career around it, but to contribute so much to a vital part of the scientific community. Sigh, if only it were always so easy.

Celebrating National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day Last week, OC Life were invited along to ‘Little Buraays Playgroup’ at the Winhanganha Aboriginal Learning Centre at TAFE, as they celebrated the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day. This year’s theme being, ‘my country, our country’. The centre was visited by Orange High School’s boys and girls dance groups where they performed for close to 40 visitors and educators. The day included digeridoo playing, musical performances and arts and craft for the kids. Sharon Sutherland addressed the room saying, “Every year, this celebration grows greater and greater, it is a way for us to be re connected with our community and culture.” MC

esterday, I didn’t get off to a great start. First, old matey took my space. He was doing that manoeuvre where people who can’t manage to park properly drive straight through one park, and into the one in front. It saves them the difficulty of straightening up a little. “Nah buddy”, I said, telepathically. “I was here first, and I’m already reversing. Just sort yourself out, learn to drive, and move back 20cms into the space you’ve already got”. I sat with my reversing lights on, expecting him to receive my telepathic message and do as instructed. It was a Mexican standoff, and he just sat there. I slowly reversed at little. This will give you the hint. Nope. Still not moving. He stayed where he was, with 90% of his car in one spot and 10% in the other. The spot that would require him to move back a little clearly wasn’t an option for him. He put his pointer finger up and swung it back and forth in a ‘tut-tut’ fashion, while shaking his head. I resisted the urge to respond with a different one-fingered gesture. I found another park a few metres away, and focused on my next challenge: getting through the supermarket doors without making eye contact with the chirpy man wanting donations. of me. Despite being a slim woman, she managed to find the perfect spot in the middle of the isle to stop and ponder the universe, making it almost impossible to get past. I took a deep breath of frustration. “Hey lady, did you hear that deep breath of frustration? That’s because you’re annoying” I said, once again telepathically. She ignored me. So I inhaled to make myself smaller and turned sideways to squish past. “Excuse me”, I said…with actual words. She didn’t budge. Not even a tiny, token step forward as a gesture of politeness. My plastic shopping basket lightly brushed up against her jacket, and I didn’t even apologise. “There, take that!” I thought. “No apology for you!” Returning from the supermarket I was very relieved to be home, away from all the chaos and humans. It seems very apparent to me that it’s quite easy to be a nice person, if you avoid all human interaction.

he Youth Action Council (YAC) was founded by Ethan and five other members with the help of Orange City Council’s Youth Development Officer Katrina Hausia. YAC is organising a drug and alcohol free, band night at the Country Women’s Association (CWA) hall in Robertson Park, August 19. Similar events have been run in the past with varying degrees of success and with this in mind Ethan believes he has a winning formula to draw crowds and

ensure a good night is had by all. “It will be an uphill battle that we’re prepared for,” Ethan said. “Before I joined the Youth Council, I put on youth concerts all by ourselves, with own money and one night we had about 100 people. “We’ve sourced the best bands in the area and we think it’s going to be a good, safe night out.” There are a few other motives behind the implementation of the upcoming band night, Ethan said he wanted to

The danger of ‘later’

We all have things we put in the ‘later’ box. My list includes cleaning out the gutters, fixing a hole in the laundry ceiling…most of these don’t really matter. But some do. Like the metal bracket I left in the ground after taking apart a worn out structure in my

back yard. Putting that off till later meant my son needed four stiches in his knee after sliding into it saving a goal in backyard soccer. Have you put the whole God question in the later box? ‘I’ll think about God later, when I have more time, when my kids get older, when I have had my fun’. If God is real, if Jesus did die on the cross, rise from the dead and is our eternal judge, then there is nothing more important than working out the answer to the ‘God’ question. Also, what makes us think that after spending a lifetime saying ‘no’ to God, we will be ready to say ‘yes’ later? Putting God in the ‘later’ box is the most dangerous thing we can do in life.

make our birthday party so much fun. The kids and parents all had a great time! Glad to see Little Kickers have added extra classes to their timetable. Check them out at the PCYC on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Thumbs up to the gentlemen who came to my assistance after my fall in the CBD last week, also to the lady who rang my daughter on her phone. Thumbs up to the staff at Orange City Council Service Desk, great help with everything! Thumbs down to Orange City Council for closing the Community Centre (giving the government grants back are we?) Do we now expect nothing to be allowed near there (or in vicinity) due to the misbehaviour of some?

Thumbs up to the Orange Hospital Auxiliary and other supporters for donating over $400,000 worth of equipment to Orange Health Service during the last financial year. That’s a superb effort! Thumbs down to the two young blokes throwing cans down the grass hill of the new museum and tossing stuff over the edge. You’re a disgrace. Thumbs up to whoever has the job of cleaning storm debris from the walking tracks around Mt Canobolas. Huge Thumbs down to the motorcyclists who don’t apply themselves to the road rules and endanger other road users, it’s not on. Police should be targeting those motorcyclists who

are inconsiderate and do not apply themselves to the road rules. Ed’s note: Would be nice if ALL road users complied with and applied the road rules; would make the Police’s jobs a bit easier. Thumbs up to DG Cycles—the Norco Warrior has risen and it’s time to go! Big thumbs up to Mick and Donna from Cargo, you both make our village the best place to live. Your support, kindness and friendship is truly appreciated. Thumbs up to the Cargo shop for the best hot chips in Australia! Thumbs up to the Councillors for finally listening to the wishes of the people and getting rid of the Mobile Parking Vehicle, even if it is in the short term. Thumbs down to people who are constantly offended by everything. Remember— offence is never given, only taken.
