thirty years’ time, cash is not king! Cash will lose purchasing power over time for the exact same issue we are seeing at the moment – inflation. You need investments that will grow, and keep growing, one day to be used to help you fund your retirement.

ake the media. The first sign of a stock market pullback and they get excited to tell us how much money we’ve all lost (not true by the way). The job of the media is to get you to click on their article. The best way to do that is to tap into fear. Whether or not you read their article, well, my guess is they probably are not too fussed. Their job is to engage you, and generally speaking, they seem to be best at doing that by scaring us as much as possible. Fear sells!

We are well aware we have a very important job to do, which is to try our absolute best to ensure you don’t make mistakes with your money.

So here’s our perspective…

At the start of the year we saw stock markets, both locally in Australia and globally, go backwards. The primary driver of this backwards movement has been the fact that inflation appears to be upon us quicker than expected, and the reality that inflation is often best managed by increasing interest rates on loans. This ultimately means people can’t afford to

spend as much money, businesses then make less profits and the values of those businesses need to be re-evaluated.

This is all part of a cycle, and the pullback in stock markets is normal and to be expected. The fact that stock markets were not too long ago hitting all-time record highs made the pullback quicker and more exaggerated. There are some who panic and pull out because of fear that things will keep going down, the thing is they always go back up again. And there are those who take money out believing they can then pick the right time to get back in again… trust us, the chances of being able to successfully time the markets are slim to none and history backs that up time and

time again. History has demonstrated very clearly that time in the market is the key, and the way to guarantee you lose money is to sell while things are down.

Your focus needs to be on your timeframe. The right money in the right investments for the right timeframe. By focusing on your time frame, you can then select investments that are appropriate for each stage of your journey.

If you’re investing for the short term (up to a few years), cash is king! It is the only place you can safely invest your money and be sure its value will be what you need it to be for that short period of time.

Assuming you follow this simple investing guidance, volatility, like we have just seen in the markets, is just part of the ride.

Yes, it’s a bit of a roller coaster at times, but as you would know, the worst thing you could do on a roller coaster is try to get off halfway through the ride. It’s not always easy, but it’s when things are down that sticking to your plan becomes more important than ever. Volatility is a temporary destination you quickly pass on your journey.

You don’t change direction to escape volatility – it is normal! Unless you are willing to accept volatility you can’t invest in growth assets. Without growth assets, you don’t get the wealth outcomes you need.

So our advice to you when volatility rears itself again (as it is certain to do), is to DO NOTHING! And herein lies the key to successful long-term investing, doing nothing is actually doing something, and it is usually the correct course of action for savvy investors.

Women’s Shed PUSHING FOR LADIES TO TRY A TRADE — JONATHAN ROE — Local women considering a trade career are being offered a free, hands-on opportunity to get a start in the industry.

“We want to get more women in trades and trying a trade,” Orange Woman’s Shed President, Michelle Einsaar explained.

“Women can do anything a man can do, and I think a trade opens a lot more options for women these days,” she added.

Thanks to a NSW Government “Connecting Women to Trades”’ grant, Orange Women’s Shed is offering a series of free short-courses and practical workshops for working-age women. The idea is, to give interested women a taste of what it's like working in various trades,

while also learning some useful skills.

“So, with this program, we get local businesses to come and chat with the participants and we give them shortcourses with TAFE so they do accredited units to get a taste of whether this is something they want to do in the future,” Michelle explained.

“They do a ‘Statement of Attainment in General Construction Carpentry’ at TAFE. That will cover workplace health and safety, how to handle materials, an introduction to hand tools, power tools, and some air tools.

Local women considering a trade career are being offered a free, hands-on opportunity to get a start in the industry with Orange Woman’s Shed.

Central NSW Business HQ will also work with participants on resume-writing and job interview skills.

“So if you are thinking of trying a trade, looking for a new job and not sure what avenue to take, if you are a mum returning to the workforce and want to do something more hands-on, this might be your opportunity,” Michelle said.

“And, we also are having workshops with different female trades here at the Women's Shed and they'll actually complete small projects.”

“You can talk to different tradespeople and have a look at what different pathways might be open to you to actually get into trades and hands-on jobs.”
