The air will thaw, grass will begin to grow again and flowers will begin to bloom and before you know it summer will be here.

I for one love the four seasons we experience here on the Central Tablelands.

Now someone please pass me the axe – I have plenty of firewood to split.

Speaking of splitting – no-one has made a dash with the $700 which is now on offer for the Bathurst City Life Thumbs Up disc, which is still lurking in a small business somewhere here in town.

As I pointed out last week – there is plenty you can do with that sort of cabbage – so get looking.

It turns out though that I have an apology to make to one segment of the community.

It turns out my suggestions of buying as many Twilight books and DVDs as possible and burning them didn’t go down to well with lovers of the insipid vampire rubbish that is Twilight.

To those amongst us who are Twilight fans, please accept my insincere apology at the suggestion.

An Avid collector, he brought with him some examples of war memorabilia dating back to the First World War. included in the collection was a wooden splint used to stabilise wounds on the battlefield and a number of anti-tank guns that were discovered recently in some concrete, used as reinforcing.

“At the end of the Second World war, people went to the small arms factory in Lithgow and used the discarded weapons as cheap steel to reinforce concrete with,” he explained.

“When a local builder was renovating a garden recently, he was amazed to find these anti-tank guns in the concrete walls of the garden.

“A chap managed to get one of them and fully restore it to be able to fire, but these are just relics.”

Peter described himself as a first-class collector.

“Well to be honest, i collect just about everything, but these things happened to be lying around the place so i thought i would bring them along to share with those who may be interested in war artefacts,” Peter said. “i was called ‘Magpie Burgess’ when i was in primary school, such is my love of collecting and you really don’t have enough time for me to explain just how much i have collected in my time,” he joked.

Look, just between you and me, how cold was the weekend?

Social media posts from mates across the region was rife on Saturday with images of snow at places like Orange, Millthorpe, Rydal and Kirkconnell.

And while temperatures failed to make it into double figures either Saturday or Sunday, we were swiftly reminded how brutally cold this winter is promising to be.

But not only was it cold, the wind gusted up to 80kph at times making it feel more like -3 than 5.5 on Saturday afternoon.

At CSU’s half marathon on Sunday, runners looked more like they belonged in the Snowy Mountains than the Central West with gloves, beanies and long sleeve tops the norm rather than the exception.

And it was more of the same during the beginning of the week.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting things to improve today, tomorrow and Friday, with temps increasing to 17 and 18, but the long-term forecast is loking cold and bleak.

That said, one of the great things I love about living in Bathurst is the seasons.

As I type this column I am looking out my stained glass office window to a myriad of leaves in every shade of orange, yellow, burgundy and red you could imagine.

Here in Bathurst we have seasons.

Autumn is giving way to the brute force of winter right now and things are sure to get even colder and these will not be the last snows of the years.

But spring will arrive later in the year.

What is your name and where do you work?

My name is Jem Maddox, I am a Child and Adolescent Trauma Counsellor at the Women’s Health Centre in Bathurst.

What are you involved with?

I am about to commence the “Bringing up Great Kids” program for parents or carers of children who have suffered some kind of relational trauma. This includes domestic violence, sexual abuse and neglect.

Who would you like to see attending the program?

There are parents whose children have been the victims of some type of trauma and many of these parents are on their own after getting away from the traumatic experience themselves, this is certainly one section of the community we would love to see get involved.

We also have lots of people who are carers who say, “he’s got all of these behavioural issues. I knew he would have them because DOCS has already told me about them. I understand what he is going through, but it is driving me nuts and I need some help.”

What is the program all about?

This is a parenting group which is different to others like PPP or 123 Magic. They are ore behaviourally based, while this is based around people reflecting on who they are as a parent, what messages did they take on as a child and how do I want to pass these onto my kids.

What else about the program is important?

It is a program designed to help parents of these children identify how well they are doing at being a parental figure and how can they improve their own skills to assist the needs of their children.

Is this the first time this has been offered?

This is the first program this year, but we did offer this to families last year and it was a great success. We haven’t had big numbers, which is a difficulty, but the evaluations have been really positive.

People have found that having the opportunity to think about themselves as a carer or parent is very helpful.

The kid in me has never really grown up, which is why i love attending the show each year.

There is something magical about the show – something that appeals to kids and adults alike.

When i was younger i was involved in my schools stud cattle program. it meant that each year i would venture into Moore Park (the site of the old Sydney show) and spend up to 10 days living on site looking after, grooming, cleaning and parading the school’s team of Angus cattle.

Later, i worked as the Livestock editor at The Land Newspaper and again spent up to a fortnight on the showgrounds – this time at homebush - covering every aspect of the show. i have a long affinity with shows, both local and the Royal easter and each year i look forward to them with great anticipation.

Being a new father also adds a new element to going to a show.

Sure i always take the obligatory dagwood dog challenge – but going to a show with kids forces you to look at it through different eyes again. it is a wonderful reawakening after years of working at them in a range of capacities.

Like so many country kids that grow up in town – the show is one part entertainment and one part education for a 9 and an 11-year-old.

Sure, there are rides to enjoy, but shows like our own this weekend is something way more important than a few show bags and rides. it is an event that brings our community together.

My kids get a better appreciation for the rural landscape and economy that contributes so strongly to Bathurst. They learn about livestock, produce and fleece. it is one of the best classrooms a kid could be involved in.

The creative side of my kids is challenged by the photography and art competitions, the culinary side is wowed by the many CWA approved cooking competitions and the inquisitive side is fed by the many displays and activities which go on through the course of the day.

Sadly though, in many smaller towns across NSW, country shows are a dying breed.

A lack of interest, years of drought and struggling economies have all conspired to see local shows with a century of history wind up in small communities that dot our landscape.

But not here in Bx! But be thankful, that here in Bathurst we have a show committee and society that does all it can to bring three days of fun, excitement and education to the showgrounds each year. i am the first to admit that going to a show these days is not the cheapest of exercises though. But what price is a kid’s education?

Sure a show bag might set you back $15 and ride about $10, but the show this year offers so many well-priced activities, that we managed to get out of it well cheaper than i actually expected.

To top it off, i managed two dagwood dogs without spilling sauce down the front of my top.

That’s a win in every aspect in my book.

Lovers of fine music can today, enjoy a free concert

by Mitchell Conservatorium artists at the All Saints Cathedral.

The performance is being presented as part of the free Lunchtime concert Series by the conservatorium and will feature local solo pianist cindy fox as its headline performer. cindy, pictured last week practicing for the event, said she was excited to be able to participate in the lunchtime series and hoped people would take the opportunity to come to the all Saints cathedral today.

“The program includes Beethoven’s moonlight Sonata, and Gnossienne no. 3 by erik Satie,” she noted “other pieces people can expect to enjoy today include rain Tree Sketch II by Takemitsu, the four movements of ross edwards’ mantras and night flowers, and the second movement of Beethoven’s pathetique Sonata.”

The performance kicks off at 1pm at the cathedral today.

Step back in time for Heritage Week Bathurst will begin to celebrate Heritage Week this Friday, with many museums, businesses and private residences opening their doors to the public.

Pianist Cindy Fox is the headline performer at today’s free Lunchtime Concert Series presented by the Mitchell Conservatorium.

Heritage Week will run from May 9th to May 18th, and will include over 70 historical events. the community will have the opportunity to take tours of different houses across the city, tour the pits at Mount Panorama and take a look inside Crago Mill. the Historical Museum will be holding an Open Day on Saturday, and will have a range of activities for the kids to enjoy with a lot of staff on hand to provide information about Bathurst’s history. entry to the museum is free, and visitors will have the opportunity to have some of their own photos scanned to build their family history.

Week, is a fantastic new event. “this is a terrific collaboration between Council and the heritage groups, private home owners and businesses. We are hoping it will become an annual event,” he said.

“We have had tremendously positive feedback from the community. Some of the tours are completely sold out. We did a couple of preview events, such as two tours at the agricultural Station and there were about 200 people!”

Mr. Bathgate said Heritage Week would provide people with an opportunity to see inside some of these buildings that normally they would not have access to, and learn about the history of this town. “i think the really important thing is that we recognise what wonderful and unique assets we have,” he said.

“Other country towns would absolutely die to have the heritage buildings that

Bathurst has, so we are very privileged to be custodians of these fantastic buildings and wonderful history that goes back 200 years.”

Heritage Week is expected to be very popular among locals, particularly after the success of similar historical events in the past such as last year’s Ben Hall Festival. in 2015 there will be even more celebrations as Bathurst marks its 200th year, making this a great time to learn about some of the history in the city.

Mr. Bathgate encourages the people of Bathurst to come and take part in some of the various activities, tours and events that make up Heritage Week.

Bathurst’s Australia Day ambassador Paula Duncan will be returning to town on Friday night to officially launch the city’s first Heritage Week celebrations.

The Brass Ensemble

The Sydney Conservatorium of Music’s Grand Western Tour will take centrestage in Bathurst with their concert due to perform at the Mitchell Conservatorium on May 11th.

ELISABETH CARTER The opporTuniTy is a result of the Mitchell Conservatorium’s long held relationship with the Sydney Conservatorium and is one not to be missed.

The Brass ensemble is made up of Zac Anderson and Jenna Smith on trumpet, Arianne rooney on French horn, Jackson Bankovic on trombone and James Barrow on the tuba. The concert will also feature oscar henfrey on drums and David Miller on piano.

Jackson Bankovic originally comes from orange where he learnt to play the Trombone at the orange Conservatorium

whilst he completed high School. Jackson is now in his second year at the Sydney Conservatorium and has already had the honour of playing with the likes of James and John Morrison and performing in the Schools Spectacular orchestra as the principle Trombonist.

Along with a huge list of achievements of each of the ensemble members, David Miller is a highly regarded and accomplished pianist with international and national performances filling his resume’. David has worked with many talented and well known musicians and singers and has been described as “The role model of Australian accompanists” as reported in the Sydney

The Catholic Priest tried to buffer the obvious argument point and suggested “Perhaps you’re both wrong, and it’s a compromise in that the fetus is not functional with a heartbeat until the third month”.

They had to prod the Jewish Rabbi for his answer, and he finally leaned forward to his mike and spoke softly “All of my friends here are wrong. Life begins when the last child leaves home, and the dog they left behind dies!!!”.

One stOp on a tour across Australia and new Zealand, tour of Duty is designed to reveal acts of astonishing bravery and unveil the tales that lie behind the many war memorials that dot the Australian landscape.

Coincidentally, sir tony was in Bathurst to experience the Anzac Day celebrations and was mightily impressed with what he saw.

“Forget the big memorials like sydney, Canberra or Melbourne,” he told the large crowd. “the ceremony here in Bathurst had so much dignity, but it was laid back. It was real but matey, it glorified the people who died in the war but didn’t glorify war itself.

“It was the real nature of Australia right here,” he said. prior to commencing filming the Bathurst leg of the 10-part series, sir tony told the large crowd that the show was not about glorifying

war, but recognising the many wonderful stories which have been held tight in families about experiences in war.

“I don’t want to pontificate about British history, but rather want to find out about your history,” he said.

During the shows six-hour filming, many community members brought with them war relics and artefacts, medals and other memorabilia for an army of experts to appraise and relate to war experiences. sir tony said part of the responsibility of the show was to create history for the younger generations in the community to hear and appreciate.

“We are not doing our job as historians, if we don’t ensure our stories are captured and retold for future generations to learn about and understand,” he told Bathurst City Life. tour of Duty will air on Foxtel’s History Channel in January 2015.

Being green and studying at Charles Sturt University just got a whole lot easier with students now able to charge their mobiles, iPods and laptops as they exercise with the new ‘Ride and Recharge’ program.

The recharging is done by connecting the gadgets to an inverter connected to stationary exercise bikes through a generator. The service was launched last Wednesday by Vice-chancellor, Professor andrew Vann at the cSU Library.

Kate hadley, acting Manager of Business Services in the University’s Division of Library Services explained that the rider can see the energy being produced on the screen of the bike, encouraging them to continue pedaling.

students and staff, and instil an energy conservation message,” Kate hadley explained.

This green way of producing energy will go towards the University Learning commons and in turn reduce the energy costs and carbon footprint of the Uni as well as encouraging students and staff to take an interest in both their health and their environment.

The program was funded by cSU’s green’s Sustainability grant program and developed with the assistance of many other members.

Garage sale trinket the find of a lifetime Martin King appraises a piece of antique china which was bought to King’s Antiques by local lady, Margaret Ling.

Imagine buying a 20 cent piece of cosmetic jewellery at a garage sale, only to discover it was worth closer to $2,000.

DAVE RANKINE ThaT was the reality for one lucky collector early last week as they brought the piece to Kings antiques for valuation.

Owner Martin King was conducting the valuations as a means of raising money for the Carenne school’s hydrotherapy pool and turned up the find for the lucky owner. “we thought it might be a nice idea to allow people to bring their collectables down to the store and get an appraisal done on them,” Martin explained.

“I charged $5 for the valuation and that money is being donated to the

Carenne school.”

Martin noted that he had conducted quite a number of valuations over the weekend and had already raised about $300 for the school. “as you could imagine the lady with the jewellery got a very pleasant surprise when I revealed the value of her piece. It really did make the effort of doing the valuations really worthwhile,” he beamed.

“People are still welcome to bring their antique pieces or that knickknack they aren’t sure about into the store this week, and I will happily give them some feedback about it and idea of its value.”

It’s quiet country roads and a strong cycling club scene that makes it a drawcard for cyclists around the country, as does the Blayney to Bathurst which has grown to be one of the largest mass participation sporting events in regional Nsw. Tapping into this culture is local bike shop owner Greg Bell of Belly’s Bikes in russell street.

Some tourists in the Chicago Museum of Natural History are marveling at the dinosaur bones. One of them asks the guard, “Can you tell me how old the dinosaur bones are?”

The guard replies, “They are 3 million, four years, and six months old.”

“That’s an awfully exact number,” says the tourist.

“How do you know their age so precisely?”

The guard answers, “Well, the dinosaur bones were three million years old when I started working here, and that was four and a half years ago.”

Belly noted that Bathurst’s nonwinter climate is very cycling friendly with cooler days in the summer months than on the coast and therefore could also be appealing as a cycling destination.

Belly told Bathurst City life that bikes were available for half a day and up to a week with helmets and bike locks supplied as part of the hire arrangement.

Show your support on World Ovarian Cancer Day JESSICA HANN This Friday will be World Ovarian Cancer Day, a day that aims to raise awareness and support those suffering from the disease.

At the Bathurst City Centre on Saturday May 10th there will be a raffle held to raise money for ovarian cancer with many great prizes on offer.

Models from the Australian Country Beauty Pageant will also be in Bathurst to support the cause, having photos with members of the community for a small fee with all the proceeds going to support those with ovarian cancer.

Ovarian cancer causes the deaths of close to 140 000 women per year around the world.

Ovarian Cancer has the lowest survival rate of all female cancers, and it is a disease that is difficult to detect and is often misdiagnosed.

World Ovarian Cancer Day aims to educate people about the disease to save the lives of women.

Living history on show DAVE RANKINE On hand to provide some living history at Machattie Park last weekend were members of the 18th Battalion First AIF Living History Group.

Used as part of sir Tony Robinson’s local filming of the History Channel Program Tour of duty, members dennis Channels, Jacob Kennedy, darryl Bark, Ben Joseph and James downey were in full First World War uniform.

The members provided a catafalque party for the filming of the show’s introduction and also provided a sense of realism to the war-themed program.

CONTRIBUTED Senator Wong, the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate and Shadow Minister for Trade and Investment, will give the address at the annual dinner on Saturday September 20 at Bathurst Panthers.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Light on the Hill dinner, held each September to honour Ben Chifley.

With 350-500 attending past dinners, organisers are expecting a large turn out this year.

“Penny Wong is enormously popular and respected, not just among Labor Party supporters, but among women and men across the entire spectrum of political views,” said Bathurst Labor Senior Vice President and former Senator Sue West.

Before entering Parliament, she was a barrister and solicitor in Adelaide and had worked as an adviser to the Carr Government in New South Wales.

Penny was first elected as a Labor Senator for South Australia in November 2001. Between 2007 and 2013 she held the positions of Minister for Climate Change and Water, Minister for Finance and Deregulation, and Leader of the Government in the Senate.

In a 1949 speech, Prime Minister Ben Chifley coined the phrase “light on the hill” to describe the goal of the Labor movement to bring better standards of living and happiness to Australians.

Past Light on the Hill speakers have included the then Prime Minister Julia Gillard, then Treasurer Wayne Swan, and current leader of the Opposition Bill Shorten.

Thumbs up to Bathurst Council for the partnership they have formed with the Bathurst Mountain Bike Club. The track continues to develop and is a great benefit to cyclists across the community.

Well done also to the hard working club members who have been building the track since it commenced nearly a year ago.

Flight oF FANCY On April 23rd, many gathered to watch as a variety of colourful balloons took to the skies for the Canowindra balloon Challenge. The challenge started off in a paddock while the balloons prepared to take flight. They then flew over Canowindra and the golf course where they attempted to drop markers onto the green as their balloons sailed on by. A very exciting event!

Thumbs up to all the parents who have survived another school holidays. The holidays in the middle certainly made it an easier task this break.

Thumbs down to rude drivers who cut people off when they can see them merging.

Thumbs down to the cyclists the other week that were driving in the wrong lane, not indicating, blocking traffic, and giving rude symbols to drivers. You give cyclists a bad reputation.

It was smiles all round for Bathurst youngster Guy Lore as he tucked into some lunch in Machattie Park last weekend. the smiley four-year-old was in seventh heaven with hot chips and satay sticks and spent some time watching the ducks swimming with his parents, during his lunch break.

Thumbs up to the community groups who provided school holiday entertainment including the PCYC, Library and Fossil Museum. As parents we were grateful for your efforts in keeping our kids entertained.

Creating a more liveable life By the end of 2015 fifty people within the Bathurst and Orange regions, who currently live in a large residential care centre at Bloomfield Hospital, will be provided with housing thanks to a $30million plan by the NSW Government.

Three residents will initially be moving into the home; with another two soon to join them.

The aim is for the residents to live as normal a life as possible and to improve their quality of life. So far, there are three new group homes in orange and two in Bathurst with five more yet to be built. The homes consist of individual bedrooms with shared dining, kitchen and lounge areas as well as stunning views, gardens and living areas.

Glenray industries currently operate the homes in Bathurst, providing the residents with care, day programs, and employment and also respite services dependent on each individual’s needs and abilities.

Bathurst High School Agriculture Team Hard at work at Bathurst Show over the weekend were members of the Bathurst High School agricultural team.

The kids were manning the petting zoo and were enjoying being indoors from the cold conditions that buffeted the showground for the three-days of the event.

One summer evening during a violent thunderstorm a mother was tucking her small boy into bed. She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, “Mommy, will you sleep with me tonight?”

The mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug. “I can’t, dear,” she said. “I have to sleep with Daddy.”

A long silence was broken at last by his shaky little voice: “The big sissy”. **** Four expectant fathers were in Minneapolis hospital waiting room, while their wives were in labor. The nurse arrived and announced to the first man, “Congratulations sir, You’re the father of twins.”

“What a coincidence” the man said with some obvious pride. “I work for the Minnesota Twins baseball team.”

The nurse returned in a little while and turned to the second man, “You sir, are the father of triplets.”

“Wow, That’s really an incredible coincidence “ he answered.

“I work for the 3M Corporation.” My buddies at work will never let me live this one down.

An hour later, while the other two men were passing cigars around, the nurse came back, this time she turn to the 3rd man - who had been quiet in the corner.

She announced that his wife had just given birth to quadruplets.

Stunned, he barely could reply. “Don’t tell me another coincidence?” asked the nurse. After finally regaining his composure, he said “I don’t believe it, I work for the Four Seasons Hotel.”

After hearing this, everybody’s attention turned to the 4th guy, who had just fainted, flat out on the floor.

The nurse rushed to his side and after some time, he slowly gained back his consiousness.

When he was finally able to speak, you could hear him whispering repeatedly the same phrase over and over again.

There was a lot of items to choose from at the recent Farmer’s Markets. It was a beautiful morning and the community was up bright and early to get some great deals at the markets.

Members of the Inner Wheel Club of Bathurst held a High Tea event at the Holy Trinity Parish Hall. The proceeds from the event will be donated to the Inner Wheel Australia Project, which supports cord blood research. Guests enjoyed great food and tea and were treated to a performance from the Promenade Dance School.

The Chapel on St Joseph’s Mount recently hosted a jazz concert in celebration of International Jazz Day. The chapel has hosted concerts of other genres, but this was their first jazz performance. The band Swing Factor, performed, with guest performers like Aaron Hopper and Valda Marshall from Sydney. International Jazz Day was started by UNESCO in 2011 to promote creativity as well as gender equality and peace.

Kangaroos too good

Let’s not mix words – when the Beastie Boys sang about Brass Monkeys – they were, in fact, singing about the weather on the weekend.

It rained on Saturday, with some reports of sleet and the weather was the coldest to buffet town so far this year.

So bad was the cold snap, it saw junior sport cancelled and the senior sport conducted in less than ideal conditions.

Not that, the Armchair Fanatic would know.

I can’t really complain about the cold weekend however, I will admit to not being in town.

Nope, this weekend the Armchair Fanatic took a few days off and headed to sunny Port Macquarie to watch some of my closest friends race the Australian Ironman.

It is a grueling event – a 3.8km, swim, 180km ride followed by a marathon 42km run.

And no part of it is easy – I should know, I have done four of the buggers.

What possesses an individual to push themselves over these sort of distances is the stuff of black magic or a bizarre and perverse sense of self-abuse.

Competitors have 17 hours to finish the race and if I was doing my job properly I should now be able to name those from Bathurst who raced.

But I don’t and I can’t – so if you made the trip up the highway on the weekend and raced – Good on ya’ Tiger for having a crack in ridiculously windy conditions.

Speaking of having a crack, it was great to see the Waratahs have a win, albeit a pretty ugly one over the hurricane on Saturday night.

Two of the tries they conceded were incredibly soft – with Beauden Barrett’s effort, the result of some calamitous play by the NSW side in their own in-goal.

But to their credit, they came back to draw the game 24-all at the main break and ran away with

the win in the second half.

I am such a frustrated and pent-up supporter of the Waratahs – rugby’s perennial underperformers, so it was great to watch them get up for a win.

But, please, someone, anyone, give Nick Phipps the same tummy juice the Saffas managed to slip the All Blacks before the 1996 World Cup Final.

The Rebels didn’t want him – and his last two games are evidence of why.

One word – woeful.

On the local scene, the Bathurst Bulldogs slipped to 1-4 after an away loss to the Forbes Platypi on Saturday.

With the lead in their grasp with 10-minutes to play, the visitors defense cracked under the pressure of relentless attack allowing the only try of the game and a four-point lead which The Dogs could not haul back in.

Reports from the game suggest the Platypi held out some determined attack late in the final minutes of the game denying the earnest Bulldogs for a number of raids.

Across town the students walked away from the University oval with a great win over the visitors from Parkes.

The 26-14 victory gave the CSU side their second win in as many weeks, after they were down in Mudgee last weekend.

Parkes were hamstrung somewhat, with three of their stars, Dan Ryan, Amoni Vea and Mahe Fangupo, missing on NSW Country duties.

But when the great scorer records the match details at the end of the year, it is the victory not the circumstances that will be noted.

Anyway, the winner is about to cross the finishing line here at Ironman, and the coffee I am sipping while writing this column has gone – so I’m outta here.

The Kiwis came oh so close.

A 30-18 triumph in Sydney wasn’t their finest hour but it still kept intact Australia’s untouchable record in the mid-year transTasman international since 1998.

However, there will be relief in the camp as well as reflection after the debutant-laden Kiwis threatened an almighty boilover.

Waratahs step up

A five-try effort against try-scoring machines the Hurricanes breathed new life into the Waratahs’ season in Sydney last Saturday and put them firmly back into finals contention with six games to go. The Hurricanes were everything their recent run up the ladder suggested they would be. Dangerous, silky with ball in hand and capable of punishing the smallest moments of hesitation in their opposition.

They managed to turn a 7-0 deficit into a 24-7 lead with two converted tries in less than 15 minutes because they pressured the Waratahs in defence and made even Israel Folau appear uncertain at times.

But in front of a crowd of 17221, they were also unexpectedly shaky in defence and the Waratahs rediscovered their early season pointscoring mojo to secure a crucial bonus point with the 39-30 win.

Last weekend it was a bit chilly. Chilly and wet. Chilly and wet and Snowy. True Orange weather.

Due to the inclement conditions many sports were called off or postponed. And sensibly so.

Now I expect some stuff to be called off. Equally, I expect most of the football codes to play; it is a winter sport after all.

But what surprised me most was the hardiest bunch of them all, the golfers. Yep, you read it correctly, Duntryleague’s Championship Match Play was scheduled for Sunday, early, and just because they are true tough guys, off they went!

It was cold. It was wet. And it was windy! Crazy or what?

Swifts topple Vixens For the sixth time in seven away attempts, the NSW Swifts toppled their old rivals the Melbourne Vixens 54-50 in what was a possible grand final preview, aided by a fine all-court defensive effort and steady shooting from Diamonds hopefuls Susan Pratley (28/32) and Caitlin Thwaites (26/31).

The Presbyterian Reformed Church meets for public worship in the Raglan Community Centre, Frome Street Raglan at 10:30am every Sunday. Anzac Day

- One of great pride in our nation Every April 25 on Anzac Day the immense pride I have in my nation swells to breaking point.

DAVE RANKINE As diggers march past with their medals proudly displayed over their hearts, young or old, i can only image the emotions they are feeling.

And such was the case last week when an enormous crowd well above 1,000 people gathered in Bathurst to mark this significant annual memorial. encouragingly, so many children took part in the event, taking the time to honour those who have served and died in past and current wars.

Veterans from as far back as the second World War to those currently serving in middleeastern conflicts joined together at the Bathurst rsL Club for the march to the Carillion War Memorial. in a tremendous gesture to their service

and sacrifice, the streets were lined with local people, often five or six deep to pay their respects to the unsung heroes in our community.

The service itself was a moving one, described accurately by visiting historian sir Tony robinson as “real but matey.” “it glorified the people who died in the war but didn’t glorify war itself,” he noted.

A highlight of the ceremony was a tremendous speech delivered by Kelso High school captain, Zachery Baker, who acknowledged the service of his own relatives and ancestors and spoke about what Anzac day meant for the youth of today.

This year’s Anzac day marked the 99th anniversary of the gallipoli campaign, with plans already underway to mark the centenary next year.
