Prepare for flu season; Rugging up is one way to keep those winter nasties at bay!

Hi friends How perfect was the weather for Anzac Day?! I remember freezing last year, this year the weather was perfect! It was also great to see such a fantastic turn out to support the march. Some of you may be reading Bathurst City Life for the first time. If that’s you we hope you like it and will be keen to pick a copy each week in future. To help spread the word we’re putting a few copies each week into local letterboxes to introduce more people to our newspaper/magazine. If the pattern in other cities where our publications exist is any guide it won’t be long before most people in Bathurst will see a copy each week. Details on where copies can be picked up each week are on page 7. With the cooler months settling in, it’s important to be alert and take a few extra precautions with your health. We’re being warned again that there is likely to be an influx of flu’s this season… so rug up, don’t leave those parts of your body that are susceptible uncovered and think about taking regular Vitamin C. Some people think taking Vitamin C

is helpful. Flu shots are another option we’re being encouraged to consider. Catching a cold or flu is no fun so take the warning folks and take extra care of yourself this winter. Kids are back at school today, much to the delight of many parents. Over coming weeks City Life will be visiting several local classrooms to see what the kids are up to. Keep watching for our photos and stories. You may have noticed Bathurst City Life is getting thicker! We have increased the number of pages to make way for more pictures and stories to keep you entertained. You may have also noticed our ‘Thumbs’ Section. Feel free to send us your Thumbs up/down if you have something to share, it’s a great way to thank a stranger or give people a hint about good practices. Also, another reminder that you can always invite one of our social photographers along to snap your party or event to appear in BCL and you can also send us your favorite photos for our new ‘In Focus’ section. By the way, did you find Panther this week?

Until next week, happy reading!  elisabeth@bclife.com.au

Award winner writes

“Straight from the heart”

Simone Norris entered the JB Fairfax Award for Rural Journalism for a number of reasons. ELISABETH CARTER She has a passion for the agriculture industry, a desire to work in the print media and a love of the local area. Put this all together along with great writing skills and you have a real award winner! The award was created through a private donation by Mr. John B Fairfax in order to encourage and promote quality, rural journalism and reporting of rural issues. The award also seeks to encourage university students to continue with a career in rural journalism after completing their degree. In order to be eligible for the award a number of criteria must be met and it’s not easy! Entrants had to submit a feature article of up to 1,200 words exploring a current issue or trend of interest to rural readers, a news article of up to 600 words on the topic “Foreign Ownership of Australia’s Agricultural Land” and show an active interest in rural affairs just to name a few!

Colour for a cause RUBY GALLOP Same sex marriage is a hot topic at the moment but where ever you stand on the issue, it’s not going to go away anytime soon as one local man has shown. Local man Andy Wheeler spread all the colours of the rainbow across Bathurst last Friday, keeping in spirit with the colourful Aussie-created craze that’s sweeping the globe. Andy met with other Bathurst supporters to make a colourful chalk pedestrian crossing on George Street at 2pm on Friday afternoon. The DIY rainbow crossing craze is being done to encourage equality in Australia and support the introduction of marriage rights in same sex

Simone, a current fourth year student at Bathurst CSU, is studying a double degree of a Bachelor of Sport Studies/ Bachelor of Communication (Journalism) and is a local girl from a rural background. Simone’s winning article, “The Gamble: the domestic lamb market is putting more pressure than ever on producers”, was chosen as the winner and will be published in a major rural publication and also the RAS Times – the RAS Membership Magazine. For her efforts she received $10 000 along with a two-week internship at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in the Media Centre working with the show’s daily publication, “The Bush Telegraph”. For Simone, the best part of winning the award is the recognition. Hailing from the small town of Eugowra two hours west of Bathurst, Simone grew up on the family property still owned and

Star student: Award winning CSU student Simone Norrie. operated by her parents Kevin and Jayne, so she’s proud to present a rural voice. “I am proud to say I have been totally educated in the country,” Simone says. “I was lucky enough that CSU in Bathurst is renowned for its great journalism course and that it’s in the country and close to home. It’s great to experience a top notch education here...it’s very hands on and interactive. It’s also great to have a combination of both rural and city like-minded people around you.” Simone’s two sisters have also studied at CSU in Bathurst and have found it to be a fantastic university. Simone’s family focus mainly on sheep and grain production on their Eugowra property so the article Simone wrote came straight from the heart.

Deciding whether to sell sheep ‘over the hook’ (where livestock are transported directly through the Abattoirs) or to use the traditional method of the saleyards is a real gamble for local farmers, and Simone explored this in her feature article. “It’s an issue that affects my Dad and my Pop every week, along with many other farmers in my local area, and it can be a really daunting decision,” Simone explains. “It’s something very close to home, and there would be farmers in the local Bathurst region and right across the state that would face the same gamble.” Simone is hoping to pursue a career in the print media in a rural publication and is already more than halfway there. Isn’t it great to see a local talent achieving their dreams.

Colourful street: Bathurst now has its own rainbow crossing in George Street.

relationships. The rainbow crossings are rapidly spreading across the world with people jumping on board to make colourful crossings from France to Fairfield and Newcastle to New York. The Facebook page ‘DIY rainbow crossing’ has already gained 19,000 likes in just a little over a week since its creation and is a part of the ‘love is love’ movement; a movement supporting same-sex marriage that many Bathurst residents support. The Bathurst DIY rainbow crossing was planned to take place before news of New Zealand’s legalisation on

same sex marriage broke and is meant to be representative of the world moving forward in regard to same-sex equality with Bathurst being no exception. People of all ages came together with Andy on the day to paint the rainbow crossing and show support in a passive yet positive way. Andy puts across the idea

that this DIY rainbow project is not only for gay rights but it represents equality and can mean whatever people want it to mean. The Bathurst DIY crossing event was a great example of our city’s spirit for when people come together for a cause, but if nothing else, it clearly shows there can still be a lot of colour in our world.

MARYANNE TAOUK

My epiphany Pandora was given a beautiful box, and told not to open it; but like any curious mind she lifted the lid, only to have every evil spill out and spread across the Earth; hatred, greed, jealousy. When the evils had all been emptied, at the bottom of the box all that was left was hope. I had an epiphany today. It was an A-ha moment that would make Oprah proud. That is; that bad things happen. While it’s something that we have been taught to face at a young age, it never really gets any easier. I was quite a clumsy child and whenever I would fall down my brother used to tell me to “shake it off”. The only advice that my musician brother has ever given me that is actually applicable to the real world. Shake it off.

He told me, if you don’t shake it off you’ll be crying at everything all the time; which would have been true.

What do you do? I’m a yoga teacher and have been teaching for coming on twenty three years What are you definitely doing in the next 12 months? Going to a Satyananda yoga retreat at Mangrove Mountain My most treasured piece of clothing is? My yoga gear! It’s

very comfortable!

Calm, happy and inspiring.

Do you collect anything? Not really, I do have a lot of Buddha’s though!

What is your life motto? To be happy and peaceful

What is your dream career? I would like to go much further in my yoga career What three words would your friends use to describe you?

What’s your favorite holiday memory? Satyananda yoga retreat- I have spent time there before and it was absolutely magic! What do you miss most

about your childhood? My freedom, riding my horses, all that sort of thing If you could change anything in the world what would you change? I would try and make the world more peaceful What’s the best thing in your life right now? My children and my Siamese Ca

He told me, if you don’t shake it off you’ll be crying at everything all the time; which would have been true. I was and still am anxious by nature, everything scares me; my list of fears runs longer than a family of four’s shopping list- remember the meteor that was hurtling through space earlier this year, well I was one of those people theatrically freaking out, hyperventilating and generally just overreacting. But with a strategic “shake off” and well timed prescription usage, I was able to get over the initial terror I felt. When I was younger I would stand up after a fall and literally shake myself, but now I can do it without anyone even noticing, a shake and then a conscious move forward. There is a story about a lady who attended a group therapy session and came to the conclusion that the only explanation for these hypochondriacs so afraid of losing everything is that they love everything- they have a soul crushing hope that things will get better and are afraid of missing it. That goes for all our fears. We are terrified that the outcome will have us somehow removed, and we could miss out on all the great things the world has to offer. The only problem with this is we never get to appreciate the great, when we’re worried about the what-ifs. My epiphany: appreciate the hope that comes out at the end of Pandora’s Box. So my advice to those struggling like me with the fear of Earth bound meteors and unattended backpacks or the others who are more inexplicably concerned; the kids being tormented by the schoolyard bullies, the men who have to hold down three jobs, just to hold up their children, the girls worried that they are not beautiful and their fathers that are worried they are, the lonely bus drivers, the late night schoolers and the wall flowers. Get up. Shake it off. And keep running.

Please, please me oh yeah! - Beatle Magic will perform in Bathurst on May 12.

Beatle Magic in Bathurst! Most of us have never had the chance to hear the Beatles live but a lot of us would have liked to because those who did see them say they were quite amazing! ELISABETH CARTER All is not lost however because Bathurst is about to experience the next best thing: a tribute band called Beatle Magic that’s been declared Australia’s most authentic sounding Beatle Tribute Show ever to perform here according to Australian

Radio legend Bob Rodgers! Who’s Bob Rogers? I hear some asking. He’s getting on in years but is still going strong on Sydney’s 2CH, but more to the point, he was ‘Christened’ as the 5th Beatle while touring with them on their 1964 tour across Europe, Asia, New Zealand and Australia. More than anyone,

Bob Rogers would know exactly how they sounded. Beatle Magic’s You Tube channel says it all having built up comments from all over the world on how alike they sound including “ Are you sure that this is not a recording of the real Beatles , the vocals are amazing.” They are a Sydney based

group who not only replicate the fabulous Beatles music but their image, instruments and style as well. Their suits are even ‘stitch for stitch’ replicas! They were made by the owner of John Lennon’s original A Hard Days Night suit. Their instruments are also identical to those the Beatles used. The Founding member and Band Leader; Bill Croft , who plays John Lennon, knows all there is to know about the Beatles. It’s his favorite group of all time and he has been performing their hits since a young age and it’s been his goal to create the best Beatle Show around! Bathurst has the privilege to see this fabulous band at the Bathurst RSL on Mother’s Day May 12 from 12pm. The show is part of a special Mother’s Day Lunch and Show. Tickets are on sale now at the RSL 6333 2999 - Adults $35, Children $15.

It’s become of one of Bathurst’s biggest sporting events, second only to the Bathurst 1000 and this year’s Blayney to Bathurst only proved the events popularity. The two day event attracted 3000 participants and raised more than $50,000 for local charities. CEO of Cycling NSW, Kevin Young said they were pleased with the success of this year’s B2B, with final figures still being counted it was

already looking close to being a record year. Described as a “City2Surf on Wheels”, the event aims to encourage families and elite riders to challenge themselves. Mr. Young also stated that in addition to the health benefits the B2B promoted, it was also extremely beneficial for local economies with almost every bed between Bathurst and Blayney having been booked. Next year’s event will run on the 6th and 7th April, make sure you save the date!

Celebrate in Bathurst Proclamation Day celebrations ELISABETH CARTER Bathurst is Australia’s oldest inland settlement and will celebrate its 200th Birthday in 2015, something we can all feel proud about. The area was originally discovered in 1813 by William Evans with the official settlement and town proclamation on the 7th of May 1815. Bathurst was later named a town in 1852 and then a city in 1885. This Sunday will mark Bathurst’s 198th Birthday and preparations for this year’s celebrations are well underway. Once

A number of community groups will also be holding stalls and displays along with several official events including a welcome to the country by Wiradjuri Elder Gloria Rogers, the raising of the Australian Flag and Union Jack by the Bathurst Scouts, Mayor Monica Morse’s

Early Mount Panorama PETER FREESTONE FROM WIN TELEVISION Mount Panorama is known the world over as one of the most challenging and best motor racing circuits. This photograph, believed to have been taken in the late 1930s or early 1940s, shows just how much the track has developed from the early days. The photo was shot heading up the mountain beyond The Cutting. Bathurst is in the distance. The track was constructed as a Depression project, originally a scenic road around what was then known as Bald Hills. Motor racing had been conducted for several years on the Vale Circuit south of

Bathurst. The first race meeting held on the mountain was over the Easter weekend in 1938 with two days of motorcycle and two days of car racing. That tradition lasted 50 years. In 1934 the City Council held a competition to come up with a new name for Bald Hills. Thirty eight entries were received. The winner was Miss Kathleen Walsh whose entry Mount Panorama was chosen. Some aldermen believed Bald Hills was good enough. Other suggestions included Mount Macarthur and Panorama Point. At the time, Kathleen Green could never have imagined the name Mount Panorama would become synonymous with Australian and world motorsport.

NICE COW! Craig Cooper from Mount David sent us through a picture of Bella, his lovely young Cow. Craig lives on a beautiful property in Mount David called “Sunny Ridge”. Bella is very shy as you can clearly see from the subtle way Craig has to yank her head to look at the camera! Mount David is after Rockley on The Rockley Road.

Macquarie Skin and Day Spa won their category award last year and also in 2010 and were delighted to be finalists again this year. “We feel honored to be a finalist! manager, Karla McDiarmid said. “It’s great to be able to celebrate our achievements, not just this year but since we opened back in 2000”. Macquarie Skin and Day Spa proudly employs 11 local staff members who contribute to the high standards the business displays year after year and seen them also be named Bathurst

We are Spartan! ELISABETH CARTER Spartan Race is more than just a race. It’s a grueling test of endurance and not for the faint hearted. This year’s event will be held in November at Razorback, near Sydney and will feature challenges such as the barbed wire crawl, spear throwing, mud run, monkey bars and more. It’s a mental and physical test of endurance, tenacity, perseverance and mental power. It takes participants back to the times of running through mud and forests, throwing spears,

balancing and jumping fire. It’s the ultimate obstacle race. Chris Sparrow is one local hoping to be one of the 600 lucky enough to compete in the Spartan Race – Beast and also the Ultra Beast. The Beast is the 21km race as well as 20 obstacles and the Ultra Beast is an even more strenuous race of 42k. With limited places, competitors must apply and be selected to compete. We asked Chris a few questions about taking on such a massive challenge. Why are you doing these Spartan Races? Doing the Beast and the Ultra Beast

May 1–7, 2013

is more about the challenge. It’s the biggest obstacle race in Australia! Have you done any in the past? I have done the Spartan 7km, the Mud Run, Raw Challenge, Tough Mudder and still have three others I am waiting on! Have you been training? Yeah, for quite a while! I’ve been training 8 or 9 months for this but I did a lot with the army. I’ve just come out of the army where we did a lot of obstacle training and that sort of thing, so I suppose I have been doing physical training for 5 years now with the army.

Is that where the interest came from? Yes, I loved doing it in the army and it has just continued. What do you expect will be the biggest challenge? The run! The 42km, I have never run a 42km! Obstacles aren’t that hard its more the endurance!

Is this something you have always aimed for? Well, the ultimate on is in America, it’s a 24hr! They only take the top three, or top 5% in it so I suppose that is the ultimate one to aim for. So, where is it from here? Hopefully to get into the American one! It’s called the Death Race!
