It’s not local but it’s hard not to be gob-smacked by what’s been going on in America. Let’s all try to love our neighbour better in Orange.

I watched the latest local Council meeting on Live Stream this week and again, I came away very dis-enchanted.

I’d encourage anyone interested in our City affairs to go to the Council website and watch a recording of a meeting, if you do and unless I miss my guess, you’ll be amazed at how un-organised, unprofessional and un-businesslike they are, and at some of the lame questions and comments that are raised. On the latest one, you’ll notice the frustration on some of the faces at what is being said.

Orange needs our Councillors to function and perform much better. Let’s start talking about that and if you think I’m being too hard on our Councillors, tell me that too.

…TO NEW BEGINNINGS It’s cheers to new beginnings in Orange with pubs, clubs, and beauty parlours now back in action with gyms, ten-pin bowling, kids sport, and indoor pools to follow in coming weeks.

Celebrating our gradual return to freedom in the front-bar of the recently-reopened Royal Hotel are Tony “Gnome” Gilliver and Mackinley Gilliver.

The Community is soon to be invited to join the discussions for the Future City plans and based on the discussion at last Tuesday’s Council meeting, it’s doubtful that’s going be an easy ride.

Councillor comments suggested there are about 100 suggestions and very few are likely to gain universal favour from the Community. 20 years or more to decide on a toilet, currently bogged in discussions about whether to allow the Farmers Markets to go ahead on Council land, and whether to allow fishing on the Ploughman’s wetlands, and trying to get agreement on what welcoming signs we put at the entrances to Orange, one can only imagine what’s ahead!

Here at Newswatch, we claim to maintain integrity, wisdom and balance.

If anything I’ve said above is not in that spirit, feel free to challenge me. On that note, Council’s achievements with solar and energy efficiency were mentioned last Tuesday night, Newswatch will find out more about that and report back to you soon.

Orange is going to bounceback from the big coronavirus lockdown better than many other cities, Orange businessman, John Davis believes.

FARMING INCOMES HOLD-UP DESPITE CORONAVIRUS STORM

Been spending more time at the supermarket buying Australian-grown agricultural produce during the coronavirus pandemic?

You might have helped Australian farmers to their best prospects in years with the farming sector proving surprisingly-resilient to the economy-wide lockdown, a specialist banking firm study found.

Drought-defying rains and return of more typical seasonal conditions has also helped off-set the effects of the coronavirus shutdown with positive production prospects for all farm sectors.

The significantly-improved seasonal conditions have also been aided by better commodity prices supported by a weaker Australian dollar to help underpin a profitable season for most primary producers.

Worldwide shortages of many agricultural commodities has also seen the Australian agricultural sector benefit from improved overseas demand, the study found.

Local businessman, John Davis is upbeat about Orange’s recovery:

“We’re very confident that we’ll come out of it quicker and better than most places,” the upbeat former Mayor and local car-dealer enthused.

Another local dealer has observed that, while car sales had declined at the start of the coronavirus lockdown, they were starting to pick-up again with surprising resilience in the local market, an opinion echoed by Mr Davis.

The diversity of the local economy and its strong public service profile was helping the “Colour City” recover from this once in a generation economic downturn, he said.

“The jobs here are very safe, schools, hospitals, and the DPI (Department of Primary Industries).”

“In my opinion, about 80 percent of the people in Orange are still working,” he said, seeing some bright spots among the lockdown. “I know we’ve missed out on sport and things, but the truth is that people are spending more time together, it’s brought

families together.”

Mr Davis said also that it was simple economics, not issues to do with Orange City Council, that was behind his recent abandonment of plans to relocate his dealership to the huge currently-unoccupied Bunnings site on Bathurst Road.

He simply believes that — in our postcoronavirus world — giant dealerships with hundreds of cars on display are no longer required to be successful in the industry.

“It wasn’t Council; neither of the parties had any problems with Council,” he said. “it was simply the sheer economic decision on these issues.”

“The difference is that, things have changed dramatically, it wasn’t possible to go ahead in the coronavirus economy,” he said.

Operators of the Cadia mine, Newcrest, is providing a $500,000 injection into the local business community through its Community Support Fund.

It will also sponsor qualified business coaches in the development of recovery and business continuity plans to equip them to thrive “beyond the curve” of COVID-19.

The program will assist small businesses in Orange, Blayney and Cabonne local government areas with up to 15 employees that have been financially-impacted by COVID-19.

Central NSW Business HQ Chief Executive Officer, Wayne Sunderland, said that many small businesses were struggling to absorb the costs associated with the impacts of COVID-19 and Newcrest’s Business Beyond the Curve Program would provide vital assistance to support the local business community.

Innovation was now the key to success in the new business environment. “The world has changed from where it was two–three years ago. In the last three months, people have been readjusting their businesses, they have to take care of their customers,” he believes.

Businesses that expect to go back to the way things were, would be the biggest losers, postpandemic, he added.

“Nobody has been spared, you have to be more efficient… We believe we can have a more-focussed business, that’s what it’s all about; multiskilling and looking outside the square,” he concluded.

The Program will also focus on business advice and workshops that will empower businesses to thrive well beyond the COVID-19 crisis.

Cadia’s Acting General Manager, Aaron Brannigan, said economic recovery from COVID-19 is a key focus area of the Newcrest Community Support Fund. Tailoring a financial program to support the business community, arguably one of the toughest hit industries through this crisis, was very important to the success of the overall Fund.

The launch of the “Newcrest Business Beyond the Curve Program” is designed to provide assistance to local small businesses that have been financially-impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program is being run by the Central NSW Business HQ with support from Orange Business Chamber and involves a grant assistance package to support businesses restarting or recovering following government restrictions.

Smaller, he believes, can now be better: “Businesses can operate in a lot of smaller volumes and staff numbers and premises,” he added.

BEYOND THE ‘COVID CURVE’ SUPPORT FROM LOCAL MINE “Orange, Blayney, and Cabonne have a heavy reliance on small businesses for the supply of goods and services, due to the reluctance of large retail chains to open in regional areas. The impact of COVID-19 has threatened their future viability and so we are very keen to partner with Newcrest in this important program,” Mr Sutherland said.

“Funding for this program will create a multiplier effect through providing grants that in turn support many other local businesses, bringing greater benefits to the entire community.”

In more good news, with infection rates collapsing around NSW, junior sport is also likely to resume by July 1.

“Leap of faith” with multi-million hotel devel’t for central Orange Newly announced multi-million-dollar hotel development for Orange is “a leap of faith” in the local community, the developer says.

“We fell in love with Orange right away. It is a town with great history, excellent food and extremely talented winemakers and we are really looking forward to working with the capable team at Orange Council to bring this great local gem to more Australian and international guests.”

“In the current climate, yes, it has been a leap of faith,” developer Paul Saunders said at a launch of the proposal on-site recently. “We’re looking at four–six months to start and we’d like to have the hotel up and running in two, two and a half years,” he added.

The three-story 25002m development will create about 80–110 permanent staffing positions and construction jobs “in the hundreds,” Mr Sanders guessed.

Orange 360 tourism chief Caddie Marshall said that the development will allow Orange to bid on large sporting and cultural events requiring large numbers of high-quality accommodation for short periods.

The development, she said is “an incredibly bold move supported by Orange Council,” with Mayor, Councillor Reg Kidd describing the proposal as “a huge boost for the Orange CBD.” Head of Council’s Employment and Economic Committee, Cr Tony Mileto, emphasised that: “This is a CBD hotel, that will set their business apart.” “it just shows the confidence that businesses have in the community,” he said. “This is going to be terrific, this is about increasing jobs and opportunities for our city,” he added.

with Orange City Council and features a four-star 98-room international hotel, a family-focused bar and brasserie, outdoor cinema and pool, alfresco dining and retail outlets to cater for both the community’s needs and visitors.

The proposed site is located in the CBD located next to IGA Summer Centre carpark, fronting on Summer Street. Co-owner of BMPS 88 Investments Mr Saunders believes this development proves how eager Sydney investors are to get into the rural market, even in uncertain times.

It “comes at the right time as COVID-19 restrictions begin to ease and the tourism sector starts to get back on its feet. This proposal shows the potential pathway for future Sydneybased investors in rural NSW, injecting much needed funds into the Orange community.” Mr Saunders said.

“This development will be a game-changer,” Cr Kidd said. “Orange is rapidly growing and it’s important we keep up with demand from the tourism sector. It will add a number of very appealing features to the top end of the CBD.” “This proposal will be assessed on its merits like any other development. In due course, as part of the planning assessment, there’ll be opportunities for the Orange community to have their say about this major development.”

From next Saturday, June 13, indoor fitness activities like yoga, pilates, and group training sessions will be permitted in NSW, but class sizes will be capped at 10 people.

Indoor pools and saunas, as well as tattoo and massage parlours will be allowed to reopen from the same date, with restricted numbers. Children’s community sport competitions will be permitted to restart from July 1.

All fitness facilities will be obliged to sign in all guests to assist with any potential coronavirus tracing and enforce the four-square-metre rule.

This followed pressure from the fitness industry that had launched a nationwide campaign to put more pressure on State Governments to set a date for the reopening of gyms.

Any re-openings are dependent on the State Government monitoring for any increased transmission after other restrictions were eased recently with fears of a dreaded “second wave” of the coronavirus.

“This development will entice tourists to look toward rural travel. It is an exciting alternative to the mainstream metropolitan options, proving Orange is only getting bigger and better as new developments such as this continue to be developed,” Cr Tony Mileto said.

“This proposed development will compliment and extend our diverse tourism product offering and fill in a missing gap that will build our destination’s appeal to the family market,” Ms Marshall said.

“We have a strong and growing sector of tourists who are visiting friends and relatives. More often than not, they are looking for somewhere to stay other than the family home. This development and its location in the heart of Orange is ideal for this sector,” she concluded.

“WINTER IS COMING…” AND IT’S GONNA BE WET AND COOL!

Winter is coming and — if our Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) is on the ball — Orange is going to be wetter with cooler days even than usual…

Now for the good news, we are unlikely to face quite as many of the iron-cold frosts and clear nights that we “enjoyed” last year during one of the driest winters on record.

While many weather-watchers are familiar with temperature changes in the Pacific Ocean measured by the Southern Oscillation Index causing the so-called El Nino (dry) and La Nina (wet) effects, the role of Indian Ocean temperatures is now also better-understood.

“It’s going to be wetter all over with cooler days but warmer nights because of the increased cloud cover,” Bureau Weather Observer Nigel Smedley from the BOM’s Wagga Wagga station explained.

“To the end of May, Orange Airport has had about 538 mills (mm) of rain with the average for this time of year only about 301mm. So, you’ve had nearly 240mm above average so far,” Mr Smedley said.

The relentlessly above-average temperatures and chronic lack of rainfall experienced in late 2019 and early 2020 were associated with above-average temperatures in the Indian Ocean creating a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD).

The wetter and cooler weather since is associated with the currently negative IOD.

Orange could therefore be due for a typical post-drought winter similar to those of 1984 and 2010 when a drought the previous summer was followed by a recovery winter where the dams overflowed and the rivers ran.

The BOM’s three-month forecast for the region predicts the chances of above-average rainfall for Orange as “very likely” (above 80 percent) and cooler days as “likely”.

Mass is back in Orange — with a few post-coronavirus changes.

Holy water, communion wine, the peaceoffering, and the offering plate are all out, while attendance limits, social distancing, and hand-wipes are in.

In some good news, holy communion makes the cut with adaptations put in place for over-flow attendances, Father Greg Bellamy explained.

“Services are back on now; this is our first week… everything looks reassuringly normal,” Fr Bellamy said.

Sunday will be the big test though with 50-parishioner limits and all attendees required to list their name and address in a register at the entrance to the church.

“The weekend is the challenge as we get a lot more than 50 at a service,” he said of St Josephs on Byng St. Like all organisations in this new world order, the church has hit on

a novel approach to the problem of overflow attendances.

“Our approach for the weekend is, that after the first 50 are here, we close the doors.

Fifteen minutes later, another mass will be held in (the adjacent) Kenna Hall,” Fr Bellamy explained.

At a time when all churches struggle with attendances, the re-opening will be an interesting test of whether absence for Christians makes the heart grow fonder.

“We have no idea what’s going to happen, perhaps many people will come, perhaps many will still be concerned,” he wondered.

A number of post-coronavirus measures have also been instituted to protect what are often older congregations among the Christian denominations.

“Communion will be as normal, though served on the hand, people are to socially distance in the communion line. And wine won’t be administered,” he explained. “There’ll be no sign of peace and no passing of collection plates, there’ll be a central collection point for

PAY FREEZE NO WAY TO THANK NURSES AND FIRIES — DONATO DON’T FORGET YOUR FLU JAB

NOW PANDEMIC IS ON RUN Now we’re finally almost over the coronavirus pandemic, vulnerable locals are being urged to not forget their flu shot for winter 2020. However, if your local clinic is short of vaccines this year, don’t blame your GP! Just over 1100 GPs recently surveyed from around Australia revealed that more than half said they were unable to access enough stock to provide flu vaccinations for their patients.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) said the delay many patients faced to get their flu vaccine this year was unacceptable and needed to be urgently addressed.

“The problem was never that there was shortage of the flu vaccine. The Government secured enough of the special flu vaccine for over 65s, who are more vulnerable, for everyone in the country, and we commended them for this,” RACGP President Dr Harry Nespolon said.

“The problem is with the distribution of the flu vaccine and it has been a problem for a long time. Every year we see the same issue — the vaccine comes too slowly to GP clinics and we don’t get enough of it for our patients.

“My message for patients who haven’t had their flu vaccine yet is this: call your GP to discuss getting the right vaccine for your age group – while you may need to wait a little bit there is no need to panic, you will be able to get it.”

“I also want to reassure patients that it remains safe to visit your GP, as we know many patients have been avoiding important medical appointments since the pandemic hit – this is very concerning as it could lead to an increase in illness,“ he added.

TIME TO OPEN OUR ECONOMY Regional cities like Orange would be hardest hit by the State Government’s proposed pay sector wage freeze, Local Member, Phil Donato said.

The proposed wage freeze — which is currently being blocked in the NSW Upper House by Labor, the Greens, the Shooters Fishers and Farmers, and One Nation — would also be counterintuitive to the State Government’s declared aim of stimulating the coronavirus-hit NSW economy, he added.

He said that this was no way to thank the nurses, fire-fighters, and other public servants who had laboured through the 2020 fire season and coronavirus crisis. “Their messaging is a bit all over the shop… one minute they’re patting them on the back, and then suddenly they’re taking away their pay rise,” Mr Donato said.

“By all means, have a pay freeze for MPs and senior bureaucrats, but not for school-teachers and nurses,” he said. “The Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party are opposing the pay freeze of 2.5 per cent, it should be allocated for people to be able to spend in their local communities,” he said.

BOB: Just to remind readers who may be reading City Watch for the first time, City Watch is designed to keep you informed about matters and issues that relate directly to our City and involve our local Council. I’ll chat to Amanda Spalding each week about things that we feel Newswatch readers will be interested in. Our chats will be done in the form of type of role play, I’ll play your average citizen or ratepayer and Amanda will play the voice of the Council.

Last week we mentioned how our Council appears to not be getting things done as well as they could, and we said we’d come up with a list of priorities based on what we think and what we’re hearing from other people, then in the weeks ahead we’d try to narrow this down to say 5 - 10 main priorities based on community feedback.

Let me start with a two that I regard as top priorities.

1. Tidy up the main street now. It’s our front door and needs to be warm and welcoming. The major work they’re planning for the CBD is overkill and not appropriate, given recent events.

2. C ouncil to give non hospitality businesses the same support it does to hospitality businesses through Orange 360. Not doing so is poor business management and unfair to say the least. Done right our overall visitation would swell and the economy would boom.

Do these and the money that flowed into Orange would lead on to other growth. It’s all about getting more people coming to Orange to spend money more often. When this happens, everything will grow or advance just like a family does when the breadwinners suddenly start earning more money.

Now Amanda, what have you been hearing?

AMANDA: Clearly many things are going well in Orange as evidenced by people moving here to live despite the fact that we have the highest level of combined rates in Australia. People are moving here because of our diverse economy that will be further enhanced by the proposed Health and Innovation Precinct.

But, you don’t have to go too far to hear someone talking about something that needs to be done or fixed in Orange. Of course, many are based on self-interest and that’s understandable but not always practical. Last week we spoke about balance and that’s the challenge Councils have when considering people’s wish lists, and those need to be considered in the framework of shared values and community priorities explored through community engagement.

I want to see a progressive Council that leads and enjoys the trust of the local community.

Here are some of the priorities that people have passed on to me –

1. Water security – for many this is the number one priority.

I know that some people feel that we should put a stop to population growth because of our water security issues, but that is neither possible, nor progressive. Among the solutions proposed we have heard little about the possibility of a series of bores that have certainly been the answer for other areas.

2. Major Tourism Attraction – Orange does well from tourism but could do even better with a major tourist attraction that would rival Dubbo’s Zoo to make Orange a destination for whole families and people of all ages.

3.Council taking responsibility for the vitality of the CBD – the CBD of a Council area is its image. Orange City Council currently avoids taking responsibility for having an economically vital CBD that is part of its tourism offering.

Many people feel that the Council needs to take a more proactive approach to ensuring that bricks and mortar retail remains in the CBD and is open at weekends.

...Clearly many things are going well in Orange as evidenced by people moving here to live despite the fact that we have the highest level of combined rates in Australia. People are moving here because of our diverse economy that will be further enhanced by the proposed Health and Innovation Precinct....

4 . Adventure Playgrounds – Some people would like to see a new major kiddies’ playground and many would like to see adventure playgrounds and/or obstacle courses for older children and young people.

5. Public Toilets for Travellers – Despite the enormous achievement after 20 long years of building toilets in Robertson Park to replace the previous toilets in Robertson Park that were demolished more than 20 years ago, we need more sensible toilet facilities for travellers that are accessible and easy to find with easy parking.

6. Transparency – Many people feel that the Council fails the accountability and transparency test, particularly with its financial management.

BOB: These are obviously among the bigger issues, so just briefly, are there any other lesser items that you’ve heard about and are worth mentioning?

AMANDA: I know that a lot of people are confused about which footpaths Council chooses to construct or repair. There are some very well established streets near the CBD without footpaths. All councils have a Disability Inclusion Action Plan, and often a Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan, that are concerned with improving accessibility for people with disabilities and elderly people. These Plans should be part of the Council’s prioritisation process for decisions on where footpaths are needed. Council’s Asset Management strategy should also be transparent about the different conditions of assets and when Council will repair or improve assets. I have worked at very large councils that put their proposed works program on roads and footpaths out for consultation so residents can comment if they feel that deserving roads and footpaths have been omitted.

At this week’s Council meeting Councillor Taylor brought up the issue again of Council’s Parking Officers warning and fining people for parking on the nature strips outside their houses. This issue was discussed at Council a few months ago and the reasoning given was that it is dangerous to park on nature strips near schools because it impedes visibility. I know of many people who have had warnings who live nowhere near schools and parking on the road has made visibility far worse and more dangerous when reversing out of the driveway. I also tend to agree with Councillor Taylor that, in the past, residents have mowed their nature strips out of goodwill, and they are not actually required to do so. This attitude towards parking on nature strips may well do away with any previous goodwill.

Mayor Reg Kidd often celebrates that ‘we are country people.’

However, the enforcement of parking restrictions is very strict in Orange and income earned is high. No doubt there has been a fall in revenue over recent months and I wonder if the question has been asked about whether the Parking Officers have quotas for fines.

BOB: Do you have any thoughts on how Newswatch, or the local media generally can help get these things moving along sooner rather than later?

AMANDA: I have mentioned before that it seems that some Councillors find their dual role of a member of a Board of Directors and a representative of the community a difficult balance to achieve. Certainly the cold wind of disapproval can often be felt by anyone who raises issues publicly but, the role of the media is vital in a democracy to draw the attention of decision makers to concerns that may not otherwise reach them. Media like Newswatch should seek to engage citizens in public debate, and provide analysis that informs democratic decision-making.

BACKGROUND TO A WACKY POLITICALLY INCORRECT POETIC DISSERTATION For some years now, our Defence Forces are complying with United Nations directives from just about every UN organisation about “gender equality,” identity, anti-discrimination, protection of women, “rights” (that aren’t our commonlaw rights) for anything and any-one; and implementing their programs like the Gender Adviser Course (GENAD), and “Women, Peace and Security In Defence.”

The main global push to have ‘nation states” implement this started 20 years ago in 2000 with the United Nations Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA). Australia is fully compliant with implementation, but I doubt very much if there are too many people who understand it. The Australian “Academy of Science” in a bid to get more women into STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) announced that anyone who (self) identifies as a woman whether or not your gender identity corresponds with sex assigned at birth are

included (i.e. as a woman), in their Women in STEM Decadal Plan, reconfirmed in Adelaide in February.

The Victorian Government this month made it easy – just log on and change your gender whenever you feel like it – for just $100 – no surgery, or even counselling necessary. Is this belittling to genuine trans and gender diverse people when the law is so loosely defined? What about “normal” male and female sexes, whatever that may be now? It opens up a whole can of worms legally and scientifically, specieswise; so open to corruption. One can even choose one’s own “sex descriptor,” legally throwing the question of “Homo sapiens” clarification into disarray.

So now, in even the UN’s own language, how do you protect women, when you don’t really know who or what women are?

That’s why it was time to take a crazy politically incorrect look at this for which I’ll probably require severe counselling in order to do my head in properly.

Rest: Restrictions are gradually being eased but I’m becoming restless. I am restless because there is a long road ahead. I am constantly checking up on the news for updates and announcements from the Prime Minster, the Premier or the Chief Medical officer, I’m restless to know what it is they will say next, how many new cases are there in our state? Can I have more people at my house? Our church gets back to meeting physically again, but when can we sing?

Restless is exhausting. It is unsettling. It’s unsettling because we don’t know what is going to come next and we feel out of control. Nobody likes being out of control.

You see it in children when they become restless and unsettled when they are not in control of the game. You see it adults, when we feel like circumstances are beyond us.

When we feel restless, we can often look for a fix, a quick release that will be enough for us to make it through. Like many, I find that I will default to the mind-numbing world of streaming movies and TV series.

But even after binging a few episodes on Stan (yes I’m not on Netflix) I find that I’m still restless. No matter how hard we may try to find a cure for our restless heart,

we so often go on without finding a cure.

That is usually because we’re looking in the wrong place. Let me tell you about someone who knew a lot about the experience of restlessness. Augustine was a man who lived during the 4th and 5th century. His life was restless. He went on a journey to satisfy his restless heart. He looked for fulfillment in sex, intellectual pursuit and philosophy. He looked for fulfillment in fame and recognition. While his restless heart was appeased for a time, he was never truly at rest. Anyone who has kept up with me over recent years would realise that I have a strong bent for small business, some may even say I’ve been relentless in my pushing for gaining a better deal and more respect for local small business owners. I now feel somewhat justified, albeit not through ideal circumstances, that the Federal Government is now saying just how vital small businesses are. Hello! It’s taken a pandemic to get Mr. Morrison and Co. talking this way.

Here locally, our local Business Chamber has been a total disappointment during the pandemic, the support they have given businesses over recent months has been all but zilch. I feel fully justified in bagging the executive of the Business Chamber at this time, having had numerous dealings with them over the last 12 months. I’ll share just one personal experience to show why I feel they could do so much better.

Towards the end of last year, I wrote a lengthy letter to the Chamber making some observations, some suggestions and I also included an offer to provide free ads in OCLife to them as a giveaway for business owners who joined the Chamber.

Membership of the Chamber is around $180 a year and my offer would have given new members their membership and a free ad to that same value, both for the $180 membership fee. Would you believe I didn’t

even get the courtesy of a reply from the Chamber until about 4 -5 months later and the response was pathetic by any professional standards.

The bottom line is the Orange Business Chamber is a joke on almost every front and our business community needs and deserves so much better, as does our whole community. They have no designated office, no street signage, no easily accessible phone service, contacting them for anything is challenging, their website is laughable, communications to members is rare and in many cases is just about a free drinkies occasion. I won’t go on, I’m sure you get the idea.

Having said that, I’m also aware they do have a loyal band of members who enjoy and appreciate what they do, especially the glamour of the Business Awards, but nowhere near the numbers that a vibrant business chamber should have. You only have to look at what the Business Chambers in Bathurst, Cowra or Dubbo do for their members, to see how far behind Orange is.

There are people on the Chamber executive who shouldn’t be there and there are others who want to do so much more but are hamstrung by those who shouldn’t be there.

Let’s call for a clean out at the top and start making the Orange Business Chamber the vibrant and respected force it ought to be.

Michell Highway upgrades and new road funding for the Escort Way totalling nearly $12 million are part of new road spending recently announced for the Orange area.

The two major upgrades are part of more than $16 million being invested into a total of 10 projects through the NSW Government’s Safer Roads Program.

Installation of new safety barriers, rumble strips, and wide centrelines are some of the new measures designed to increase driver safety, Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Paul Toole said.

“Some people are excited to get back to their ‘old normal.’

However, many are reporting that they are not feeling so excited to return to their old normal. Many are feeling fearful about their safety and that of their children and, thus, are ambivalent about returning to their usual activities. Some are expressing feeling worried about the ‘business of life’ overtaking them again. Others have expressed feeling quite anxious about returning to precoronavirus life. It might feel strange for some going out and socialising again after little to no social contact and some people may have lost a little confidence about how to engage with others socially.

“Lockdown has been significant for everyone. With the global pandemic, our nervous system has been geared to “fight-or-flight.” However, during the lockdown period, our ability to do either was taken away from us.

As the lockdown restrictions are lifting, it is important to take time to reflect on what we can take from or have learned from this experience. Some helpful lockdown reflection questions people could ask themselves are: hat were the most difficult things for me to overcome •W and how did I manage to overcome these?

•W hat parts of lockdown am I looking forward to letting go of?

• What things am I excited to reintegrate into my life?

Director of PsychSolutions in Orange, Dubbo and Bathurst, Melissa recently provided some answers to what for many of us is an unknown — what long-term impact does an unprecedented societywide shutdown have on us as individuals and as a society, and what can we expect as we begin the “great re-opening”.

On the negative impacts that a society-wide shutdown has on vulnerable individuals and our society as a whole…

“The lockdown has been quite the rollercoaster which has resulted in a significant impact for many. Normally, we have autonomy and independence and, suddenly, this was taken away from us.

In addition, we have been forced into a situation where we have had to spend extended periods of time with people we may not usually spend as much time with, with little to no respite.

For some, this has created more conflict and increased stress. The lack of independence has been stressful for most and the uncertainty about what we have been allowed to do, has also been highly stressful.

The fluid nature of the situation has meant that we have continually had to adjust to the changes — sometimes every few days. The uncertainly about the future, finances or employment security, our health and that of our loved ones, has added to the worry and stress that most have felt... not to mention the stress of not knowing how long we would be in lockdown or when it will all end.

The loss of engagement in our usual debriefing activities with friends and our relax or wind-down activities with others has been particularly challenging for most.

Those that are already vulnerable have been more at risk of an increase in experiences such as stress, anxiety, loneliness, and depression. Substance dependency has also

• Which people and activities have I missed the most?

This experience for some has created an opportunity to slow down, connect more with self and others, and to notice and embrace the more simple things in life. Some have really enjoyed the flexibility of working from home, not having to navigate the early morning rush and the business of life. So it has not been all bad!

On those particularly vulnerable to the quarantine.

“Those who are already alone, the elderly, and those with mental health issues are more vulnerable to an experience such as lockdown. Those that are depressed already find face-to-face social contact challenging and the shift to virtual socialising has been more difficult for them. Some people who are anxious have noticed their anxiety increase as quarantine has meant an increase in a sense of lack of control. Those with social anxiety though have reported lockdown to be a bit of a relief because they haven’t had to face all the over-thinking and challenges they experience when socialising. Those who are isolated feel even more isolated and the elderly have had to try to adjust to virtual socialising which has proven to be challenging for many. Grandparents have really struggled not being able to have contact with their children and grandchildren, resulting in more down days and an increased sense of loneliness.”

On the indicators of stress that this one-off event has caused vulnerable individuals…

People have just been doing their best day by day to get through.”

On the best way to “come out from under the doona” and getting back again to fully-living.

“Remember that getting back to some normalcy means another change, and all change can be stressful, whether it is good or bad. I suggest that people firstly be kind to themselves and not expect that they will go from 0–100 overnight in regards to getting back into a routine. It took us time to adjust to the routine of lockdown, so it will take us time to adjust to the routine of ‘normal’ again. The good news is, anyone who has experienced unexpected anxiety during lockdown will likely recover from this anxiety within weeks or months of returning to normal routine.

I also suggest keeping things simple to begin with and slowly re-engage in social and other activities. Remember to pause and reflect on what you wanted to change in your life and what you can do to keep that change in your life.

Perhaps even writing down a list of these things and use this as a check in. Also continuing exercise, have a good sleep routine, healthy eating and talking to those you trust about how you are feeling will all help as you re-engage in your life.”

Marisa Belmonte from Orange Tenpin Bowl would also like to know, seeing as they are desperately trying to keep their family-owned business afloat until they get State Government clearance to re-open.

The big day though could be not too far away with Saturday, June 13 set down for the likely relaunch of this popular indoor sport along with gyms, yoga studios, indoor pools (and tattoo parlours!).

The venue that produced world-champion local ten-pin bowler Jason Belmonte is rearing to go after a major upgrade with mum Marisa viewing the lockdown philosophically. “It’s the way we look at it, it had to be done for everyone’s health and safety,” she said.

They’ve not been letting the grass grow under their feet during the three-month shutdown though: “We’ve used the time very productively. We really went through the whole centre which has been cleaned and fully sanitised. We’ve also got the new lighting on all the lanes,” she explained.

The Belmontes, along with all in the industry, were initially hopeful that they could get an early restart to their operations but were unfortunately lumped in with all indoor activities such as gyms, indoor pools, and fitness classes.

“We were pooled into indoor sports but our business is just so different,” she said, pointing-out that the nature of the game with individuals playing in

“We’re going to make sure that everything is in place to ensure that our patrons are safe from COVID-19. The most important thing is that the community can enjoy themselves in a fun, healthy and safe environment,” she said.

Eventually though, she believes that the time will come when we will all have to let go of Nanny’s hand and make our own risk-assessments on how we conduct our lives.

“It’s time to let people make up their own minds on these things and to let the public make their own decisions,” she concluded.

If one does not associate with crime and grime, then you will not attract crime and grime. A cleaner and more wholesome social matrix. Think about the benefits to having less police and a smaller legal system. The shifting of the workforce to more productive activities. This all takes leadership that can take everyone in one direction.

Leadership we do not have because our leaders associate with people who believe in autocratic ideology. Australia cannot afford to have the media propagating mischief.
