Vantage Point Ten years ago, as I stepped into my office for the very first time, I was excited with the prospect of SPRING/SUMMER 2019 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 2

building College of Western Idaho (CWI) into the community college of the future and a model for how to deliver higher education to students of today and tomorrow. Not knowing what we couldn’t do, CWI has done things other institutions have thought impossible, and we continue to break barriers.

In this time, the College has empowered thousands of students with quality education—helping fuel the workforce, support economic growth, and strengthen community prosperity.

Mike first came to College of Western Idaho (CWI) in 2009. Newly married, he and his wife, Danielle, were both working as CNAs at St. Luke’s Hospital in Boise, Idaho, and excited to pursue their dreams of becoming nurses. From his first day on campus to now, Mike’s journey has been filled with lots of ups and downs.

“It’s been a long road to get to this point,” said Mike.

“I’m very grateful for friends and family who have surrounded me with love and support during the hard times and the fun times. People always ask me how I got through school after the passing of our little Paige, and I have to give credit to her for the fight she showed everyone. She made me realize I have no excuse not to finish something I start.”

“I have always wanted to be the first one in my family to earn a degree, but never had the extra push I needed until I met my wife. She made me want to be a better person and never stopped believing in my potential. Fast forward 10 years, being turned down not one, but three times from CWI’s Nursing program, and after a plea from my wife to apply just one more time, here I am – a CWI graduate!”

“CWI has empowered me in every way possible. Even after ten years, CWI never gave up on me. This degree is for Paige, my boys, and my wife. Never give up on a dream, and don’t let anyone or anything get in the way of that dream.”

During his last semester, an outpouring of love and support from his classmates helped Mike push through after he and Danielle experienced the loss of their daughter, Paige, who was born several weeks premature.

“They were all amazing – taking notes for him when he couldn’t be there, sending our family cards and

Mike and Danielle are both experiencing how CWI empowers families. Now a registered nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital in Meridian, Mike plans to continue his schooling at Lewis-Clark State College. Danielle, also a Professional Nursing graduate from 2016, currently works as a nurse for West Ada School District.

On May 22, 2007, College of Western Idaho (CWI) was born when a citizen’s initiative was successful.

In July of 2007, the State Board of Education appointed the five, original trustees. We were charged to setup a new, different kind of community college. It was a daunting task. We had one vacant building, a hundred acres, no programs, minimal personnel, and the Canyon County Center vacated by Boise State. We didn’t even have a phone. Nevertheless, we had huge dreams and expectations!

Our first enrollment in 2009 was less than 1,300. At the time, a local newspaper essentially said we were a failure. In May, we celebrated our 10th graduating class – now serving nearly 32,000 students.

In the last decade, I have put my whole heart and soul into this institution. I do this because I love our students and their successes. I am passionate about CWI and our future successes!

The Onramp program, focused on empowering educators with the knowledge to teach SWIFT coding, will add depth to the College’s current coding curriculum and provide additional dual credit opportunities to students.

Empowering Community

Golf Tournament Benefits Local Families The College’s Law Enforcement program hosted their second-annual golf tournament Friday, April 19, at Centennial Golf Course. The tournament raised $5,275 for the Nampa Family Justice Center, a partnership of agencies dedicated to ending family violence and sexual assault – more than doubling last year’s donation!

Much of the success of the tournament was thanks to Law Enforcement student, Ashley Childers, who took the lead contacting sponsors and donors and recruiting players to participate.

Adventure Race Bring Learning to Life CWI’s Anthropology Club proudly rolled out their signature project, “Adventure Race: Anthropology and Ecology”, this past spring to seventh and eighth grade students at Compass Public Charter School in Meridian.

The event, more than eight months in the making, was a collaboration with Bureau of Land Management’s, Evan Worthington, to bring concepts of anthropology, ecological stewardship, ‘leave no trace’ principles, and Native American heritage to life.

helplessness, and not caring if tomorrow came. I was technically homeless, jobless with no job skills, and had two children to care for.”

As a first-generation college student and 25 years removed from high school, going back to school proved challenging at first.

“CWI empowered me to dream of a happy, successful future,” said 2019 graduate, Elizabeth Carter.

A wife and mother of four, Elizabeth came to College of Western Idaho (CWI) after years of being discouraged from pursuing a college education.

“My adventure at CWI began during a difficult time in my life. I was crawling out of a black hole of hopelessness, 1 2

“Technology had vastly changed, and my 13-year old daughter had to explain PowerPoint to me. The faculty and staff at CWI could not have been kinder, gentler, or more encouraging.”

As a student, Elizabeth achieved considerable success receiving multiple recognitions and scholarships, successfully maintaining a 4.0 GPA, and serving as the 2019 president for CWI’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society, Beta Sigma Pi – the recipient of several prestigious awards at PTK’s international convention this past April.

“Everyone was dressed in formal wear, and we were running up on stage in front of almost 4,000 people. It was so exciting every time they called our BETA SIGMA PI name! I seriously felt like I was being named Miss America every time! Silly, I know, but it can be hard being a leader and that nod of excellence was so incredibly appreciated.”

Recognizing academic achievement and providing opportunities for students to grow as scholars and leaders, Beta Sigma Pi, CWI’s chapter of the national Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society, is dominating PTK nationally and internationally. Recognized as a Top 100 Chapter, Distinguished Chapter, and top 40 chapter worldwide—Beta Sigma Pi is among 25 chapters in the Rocky Mountain Cascade Region this year to achieve five-star status, the highest rank for PTK chapters.

started winning things and breaking into final rounds in events. In 2011, we won our first national championship in Portland, Oregon.

Most recently, the team brought home its seventh national title!”

Celebrating her 10-year anniversary this past January, Bennett has been empowering students at College of Western Idaho (CWI) since the beginning. Hired in 2009, she was the first adjunct instructor hired in the Communication department.

Prior to teaching, Bennett spent 20 years in the corporate world including media relations in Denver, Colorado; promotion and public relations for the entertainment industry in Los Angeles, California; higher education admissions in Portland, Oregon; and working for one of the top lenders in Idaho.

“My very first semester at CWI, the entire faculty all fit into one room!”

One of many notable contributions Bennett has made to CWI is starting the College’s Speech and Debate team. As a competitor on Boise State University’s speech and debate team as an undergraduate from 1983 to 1987 and a volunteer assistant coach from 2005 to 2007, she was chosen based on her experience.

“We started with this haphazard team and started growing it. Our first semester was a little bit frightening! By the spring of 2010, we 1 6

“I am more confident in the classroom because of the experience I have under my belt. I can lend my professional knowledge to my students and give them practical advice on how to be successful once they graduate.”

Teaching, for her, is a way to give back and much more fulfilling than a corporate career.

“I love teaching. I love it! It is probably selfish.

I feel like I get as much from my students as I

probably give them. You have to have a labor for love and passion for giving people a chance.

Teaching is physically being there and taking every piece of your essence and knowledge to lead and guide. It’s the only job in the world where you can do that.”

From seeing her students build self-esteem and confidence and witnessing their growth and change, Bennett says the epitome of amazing is watching lives change. One of her most memorable moments as an educator was watching a student go from just trying to figure out life to landing the career of her dreams.

“I just cried and cried. In a way it was like, ‘these are the things I’ve done in my life to be successful’, and she emulated it. I was just so happy! My crowning moment as an educator.”

Joyce Bair Biology Scholarship This past August, CWI lost a valuable member of the CWI family – Lab Materials Specialist, Joyce Bair. With the desire to recognize and continue Joyce’s dedication and contributions to the success of science students at the College, her loved ones joined together to establish the Joyce Bair Biology Scholarship. Congratulations to Biology-Healthcare student, Jessica Faaofo, the first recipient.

“I am beyond thankful for the opportunity to receive this scholarship,” Faaofo said. “I have worked so hard to get where I am, and having this honor reinforced that I’m on the right path. I deeply appreciate this support on my journey to become the best version of myself. With an associate degree in Business, Cody was prepared to continue his education. He went on to complete a bachelor’s degree in Economics in 2013 at Boise State University and attended graduate school in New York at Cornell University completing a master’s degree in Health Informatics in 2018.

“College of Western Idaho (CWI) empowered me with a world-class education from great professors,” said 2011 alumnus, Cody Phelps.

Presented with an opportunity to experience something new, he relocated to the Treasure Valley in 2009 after graduating from high school.

Growing up in upstate New York, Cody loved learning and knew from a young age he wanted to attend college.

“I wanted to enroll in college right away. After researching schools, it was obvious CWI was the most cost-effective way to get my core classes completed before transferring to a fouryear school.”

I had some really amazing mentors, and I was always challenged to make thoughtful decisions around what I wanted to do for a career.”
