about the project

This co-pilot program united fourth year interior architecture students at the University of Tennessee with third year architecture students from Universidad Nacional del Sur in Bahía Blanca, Argentina. Students, split into groups, studied either Bahía Blanca or Chicago. The first portion of the semester consisted of conducting intense research, compiling it into a research book published in October. The second portion of the studio, beginning midway though October, required students to pinpoint a major issue in their respective cities and form a project proposal in response. Our team studied Chicago. Finding a myriad of impactful issues, we developed a multi-part program proposal to meet several needs present in the Fulton Market District. The final proposal includes four buildings on a large, green campus. Two buildings serve as multi-family housing, while the other two house a modern take on a large library.

This group’s research identified a variety of issues present in Chicago, namely the racial, economic and social segregation of the city's large and diverse population. This segregation is perpetuated through unequal access transportation systems, education, affordable housing, green space, and healthy

food. Further investigation highlighted how the city has been intentionally designed in this way: subways and highways were planned through minority neighborhoods, intentionally destroying them. Parks are established in already-wealthy neighborhoods. City officials regularly divert funding from programs that could help, leaving those in under-served communities with minimal opportunity to make a positive impact on themselves or others.

site research Our particular selected site is located along W Fulton Market St, stretching the abandoned expanse between N. Ada St and N Racine St. The site is bisected by N Elizabeth St. This site represents a large gap in the dense urban fabric of the West Loop; the site is currently occupied by an expanse of gravel and pavement separated into about six separate lots.

Our research showed that the Fulton Market District lacks significant green space, save a few private, fenced gardens and trees along some streets. Like most of Chicago, the Fulton Market District is structured on a grid; the only diagonal around the site is Ogden Ave. We decided to incorporate this diagonal in our site plan.

Located in the vicinity of the site are a multitude of office buildings and corporate headquarters along with a variety of stores, restaurants, apartment buildings, event venues and parking lots. Although there is a library in the Fulton Market District, it is not large enough to completely service the needs of the residents. The nearest park, located across Ogden Ave, is a nearly 20 minute walk. Apartments nearby are completely inaccessible for those who are not wealthy.

THE BRIDGE Our project proposal, titled The Bridge, synthesizes the in-depth research we conducted; the large campus encompasses three main program points: affordable multi-family housing, accessible park space, and a contemporary library to meet the needs of post-pandemic Chicagoans living in the Fulton Market District. The selected site exists currently as a major disruption to the urban fabric of the city. After synthesizing the research it became evident that at the heart of the persisting issues, fostering a sense of community could go a long way to creating a sustainable and equitable Fulton Market.

The most public aspect of the project is the park space, which includes an urban farm, community gardens and an amphitheater. Urban trails throughout the green space weave together the entire campus. The center of the site is occupied by the library aspect of the program. Split into three buildings, the library offers refuge for users without expecting them to spend money. The library houses a museum, cafe, age-specific areas, technology centers, community meeting spaces, and classrooms. The remaining two structures on the site serve as the most private aspect of the program: multi-family housing. Split between 1 bed, 2 bed and 3 bed units, the apartments offer affordable and accessible alternatives to Chicago’s pricey housing market. The apartments are stitched together with overlapping terraces and public green spaces.

long corridor along the site, framing three separate areas outside. We implemented

structures surrounding the site, creating a dialogue between the new addition of The

about the project The main objective of this project is to redesign an existing "resort" located in Hot Springs, North Carolina. The project had a timeline of approximately 3.5 weeks; program requirements were included in the project brief, and students' deliverables included an essay drawing on the climatic identity of Hot Springs, a site diagram of existing experiential conditions, a new master plan for the site, and a schematic design strategy for addressing the ruins on the site.

After a short research period, the design phase began. Several existing structures remained on the site, remnants of Hot Springs’s extensive history of spa usage.

I began by applying a grid to the existing site; this allowed me to further analyze the atmospheric conditions created by the French Broad River, climate, stream and hydrothermal springs. The axes of the grid are scales of wetness and brightness, ranging from soaking wet to arid and from maximum light to minimal.

After applying this grid, I reviewed the list of programmatic requirements for the spa and began massing out zones for each to occupy. Logically, the parking should be the most well lit, so it is located at the bottom right hand quadrant of the grid. The rest of the massing follows this logic. All of the important indoor spaces are located at the center of the site, including bathrooms, changing areas, lockers and check in.

This project served as a continuation of the previous Hot Springs projects. Following a brief research phase, students were to create a mobile shower bus. From my previous project, I chose to bring in the same micro-climate conditions: sunlight and steam. These are created through a tent-like ceiling and roof structure. The micro-climates are applied along a similar grid, with the axes being wetness and brightness. The deliverables for this project consist of a mobile shower bus with multiple detail diagrams.

The goal of ease is to provide dignity, security, and comfort to the unhoused by supplying users with a safe and clean place to take care of their basic needs. This shower bus meets the needs on the bottom two levels of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (physiological and safety) allowing the user to focus on the more difficult levels (love and belonging, esteem, and self actualization).

Many people, not just the unhoused, encounter with the desire to search and assess the environment, looking for the best possible location to sit. This response can be both instinctual and trauma-based; the floor plan for this shower bus was designed with this in mind.

The floor plan of the shower bus provides a sense of security and safety by eliminating any potential hiding spaces in awkward nooks and crannies. The user is able to see the entire unit at all times, and there are designated safe-spaces for their belongings. There is no threat of being spied on, as there are no exterior windows for people to look through.

about the project

Park City Plaza is a semester long project focused on creating a stronger community for the disadvantaged population living in Park City, Knoxville. Park City, located near Parkridge, is a historically black neighborhood; once densely populated and extremely prosperous, the community was nearly destroyed during Knoxville's Urban Revitalization Project in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. Hundreds of businesses and thousands of homes were leveled when the city built the existing interstate and highway system. Currently, Park City faces a multitude of issues, namely food insecurity, unemployment, and inaccessibility.

Students interviewed multiple lifelong Park City residents and representatives to determine what path to take.

When analyzing the neighborhood of Park City, the first thing that came to mind was the lack of access to a traditional grocery store. After a discussion with residents of the neighborhood, it became clear that Park City occupants lack access to three main things: healthy food options, business opportunities and a general communal space. To remedy these three problems, we have created a plaza space with three main program components: a grocery store, a culinary school, and a meeting space.

The proposed site functions on a central horizontal axis with the

grocery co-op in the center. The culinary school is to the west, and the plot size is mirrored as a playground on the right. The remainder of the site is filled with park and gathering space. Both structures on the site were created using a simple, assigned base building consisting of a series of bays with a triangular ceiling condition.

about the project

Students in this course studied how human factor data can be applied to the design of body support, task support, storage and systems, construction drawings, and scale models. Students learned advanced mill work design and materials and manufacturing processes. The course began with case studies in the form of prejudice and segregation in seating.

From being forced to the back of a bus to being denied a stool at the lunch counter, seating can be weaponized to exclude groups of people from the whole. By creating an “other,” those in control maintain and expand their power.

To minimize and even reverse unbalanced power dynamics, seating as a whole must be re-evaluated. We can create equity and accessibility in spaces that were previously exclusionary, and gaps in power can be bridged. Creating adaptable, accessible furniture should not be unconventional, but it is; this project aims to change that by providing a seating experience that the user defines.

Three planks of soft maple were first prepped and laminated together then sent through the planer and jointer. The boards were trimmed to 2” thick and cut into 2” strips. Each strip was cut to the proper length. ¼” wide slits were cut into the correct pieces. The legs were fastened together. Finish was applied, then

the dyed cotton webbing was added. A variety of tools were used to create the stool and its straps: the chop saw, jointer, planer, band saw, table saw, drill press router, multi-router, water heater, scissors, bowls, etc. The stool can be reoriented to create three different seating heights: 17.5”, 20” and 30”. This allows the user to customize their experience depending on their preferences.
