From Our Current Issue

Manifestation in a Glass: How The Black Salt Blends Witchcraft with Exceptional Hospitality In Hamtramck, a unique neighborhood establishment is redefining what it means to gather for a drink. By Cashmere Morley In Hamtramck, a unique neighborhood establishment is redefining what it means to gather for a drink. Founded in 2023 by owner and creative director Zoey Ashwood, The Black Salt bridges the gap between a traditional craft cocktail bar and a dedicated space for metaphysics and ritual. For Ashwood, a former New York City painter, professional psychic, and lifelong practitioner of witchcraft, the integration of cocktails and magic is entirely natural. The concept for The Black Salt materialized after Ashwood returned to Michigan and discovered a historic neighborhood tavern with over a century of history. Drawing inspiration from a decade spent in New York City, where post-work cocktails became a personal form of manifestation, she recognized a profound philosophical connection between mixology and intentional ritual work. “Both cocktails and rituals ask us to slow down, become present, and engage intentionally with the moment,” Ashwood said. “They invite us to gather, reflect, celebrate, and connect. The Black Salt grew from that shared philosophy.” Despite the distinct witchy branding, Ashwood emphasizes that hospitality remains the absolute foundation of the establishment, ensuring the space feels accessible to practicing witches, deep skeptics, and cocktail enthusiasts alike. “Hospitality means making every guest feel welcome,” Ashwood said. “Participation in the ritual side of the experience is always completely voluntary. Like any belief system, witchcraft is deeply personal. It’s something you choose to engage with, not something that’s imposed upon you.” The true magic of the bar unfolds through its highly collaborative drink and spell programs. Months before a menu debuts, Ashwood establishes a central seasonal theme, focusing heavily on overlooked botanicals, edible sidewalk weeds, and local traditions. The spells themselves are crafted around the evolving emotional and energetic needs of the community, offering themes of peace, self-love, and resilience.

“Every spell cocktail begins with intention. There’s a purpose behind pairing particular ingredients with particular metaphysical processes,” Ashwood said. For instance, the bar utilizes purslane, a sidewalk weed associated with protecting against nightmares, to build a custom green amaro scratch-made for a cachaça and rye whiskey cocktail. “If a guest is looking for something beyond that, whether it’s spiritual guidance, mental health support, or another specialized practice, we’re always happy to point them toward appropriate resources. I think it’s important to respect the expertise of other professionals just as much as I hope they would respect ours.” To make the metaphysical elements approachable and seamless, the bar utilizes small, pre-prepared spell boxes containing carefully selected ingredients and written instructions. “When a guest orders a cocktail, the bartender simply asks if they’d like to add the spell that accompanies it,” Ashwood said. “The ritual isn’t dependent on the drink. It’s dependent on the intention behind it.”

Drawing inspiration from a decade spent in New York City, where postwork cocktails became a personal form of manifestation, she recognized a profound philosophical connection between mixology and intentional ritual work. Staff are trained strictly as hospitality professionals rather than spiritual advisors. The self-guided kits empower the individuals themselves, ensuring the process remains grounded, welcoming, and entirely free of pretense. The physical atmosphere of the bar deeply reflects its local roots and Ashwood’s resourceful artistry. Rather than gutting the historic structure, she embraced its century-old character, building the upper lounge benches by hand using salvaged wood from the upper floors. She spent weeks custom-mixing a specific, calming blue wall pigment designed to shift beautifully across the changing Michigan seasons. Hamtramck itself proved to be the ideal ecosystem for the concept. “Hamtramck has always been a place where artists, musicians, entrepreneurs, and creative people have built something unique with limited resources. That independent spirit is woven into the city, and I think The Black Salt reflects that,” Ashwood said. The inclusivity of the space extends to a robust nonalcoholic program that was integrated into the bar’s identity from day one. Recognizing that many practitioners and patrons abstain from alcohol for recovery, health, or spiritual reasons, Ashwood treats spirit-free drinks with equal complexity and care, ensuring nobody is excluded from the ritual experience. Visit The Black Salt online at theblacksaltbar.com to view current menus and seasonal spell offerings. Follow their official updates on Facebook@ theblacksaltbar and Instagram @theblacksalt_bar or stop by their historic brick-and-mortar location in Hamtramck, Michigan. To explore the city further, you can book a weekend stay by searching for The Black Salt apartment listing online. Above the tavern is their custom-designed, multi-floor Airbnb apartment, featuring a private top-floor lounge and panoramic rooftop views of the Detroit skyline.

Resources for Conscious Living

The Little Duck Who Taught Me a BIG Lesson! By Peggy River-Singer The Background: I’ve always had a White Knight persona, so when I see someone in peril, I want to gallop forth on my gallant steed to save the day! That’s not always a good idea… The Setting: I live near the Huron River in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Several times a week I drive past Huron Landing, a park on the riverside. A small white duck appeared several weeks ago among the flock of waterfowl who hang out at the landing. It was probably abandoned by someone who didn’t want it anymore. The Analysis: In spite of its small size, the duck had the feathers of an adult. Autumn was approaching, and I was absolutely certain Little Bit (that’s what I started calling her) had no chance of surviving cold weather. The Assumption: The duck is tiny—human tendency to think small things are helpless—so it can’t take care of itself. It’s domestic, so the poor little thing must be confused, and anxious, and missing its home. The Conclusion: Winter is coming, so I Must Rescue This Poor Helpless Duck!! [trumpet fanfare] Little Bit is my new quest!! I shall post on Nextdoor and ask whether anyone has experience rescuing helpless waterfowl!! Mistake Number One: My attempt to get a good photo was frustrating. As soon as LB saw me she would hide behind vegetation and other birds. I was so wrapped up in my mission that I forgot that when a human pursues an animal to get a good photo, that Wanting and Demanding energy feels like Capture and Kill to the animal. Mistake Number Two: I connected with LB and explained that I wanted to help. I told her what to expect, that some humans who were also worried about her would come to capture her as gently as possible; and she would be taken to a wonderful new home. And I informed her that there wasn’t much chance she’d survive the winter living wild, so could she please allow all this to happen? The Response: Two nights later I had an apocalyptic dream (courtesy of LB and her feathered friends) in which I had escaped a burning warehouse in the middle of the night but I kept trying to drive back into it to rescue one person—who absolutely refused to go with me. So, I’d leave to save my own life, then go back in because I couldn’t bear the thought of leaving that person to die in the inferno. When I finally woke up, I was groggy and felt like I’d lived that scene a hundred times. Mistake Number Three: I never ASKED whether LB was happy in her new flock, had she been accepted and had she made new friends? And most important, did she want to stay with them? The Outcome: I’ve apologized to Little Bit and promised to stop trying to “help” her. I’ve invited her to let me know if there’s anything I can do to help her have a good life, and I’ve extended this good-will gesture to the whole flock. The Rest of the Story: Since I’ve renounced my quest to “rescue” Little Bit, she seems to feel safer since I see her pretty regularly at Huron Landing. Now I feel delight and gratitude that she’s become part of the flock; and that she seems to be enjoying her new life. So, a happy ending for everyone, and a valuable lesson I’ll never forget! Peggy River-singer is an all-beings communicator, Pleiadian Starseed, and lifelong writer. More of her articles are posted on angelsfairiesandlife. wordpress.com. To schedule a communication session, please call 734-5480194.

What’s New in the Community Spotlight!

By Lynda Gronlund On October 1st and 2nd, Ann Arbor based midwife, author, and teacher Beth Barbeau CPM, LM will offer The Holistic Birth Bag: Naturopathic Strategies for Labor and Birth. It is a two-day, in-person conference for midwives, doulas, and other birth professionals. Certified Professional Midwives can receive 12 contact hours of continuing education credits for their recertification requirements by attending. Professionals from as far away as Washington State are registered for the conference, which will be held in West Ann Arbor’s Builders and Remodelers Association of Greater Ann Arbor (BRAG) Little Lake Event Center. Barbeau described the location as being in a “beautiful natural setting.” Lunch for all dietary preferences will be served by a local caterer, and the included manual will be printed by a local printer. A culmination of her four decades in birth work, Barbeau said that this conference is “the biggest thing [I’ve] ever tried.” Driven to ensure that new generations of birth professionals receive the practical knowledge of realworld experience from those who have made it their lives’ work, she has assembled a curriculum that will allow participants to “return to [their] work more confident, with an expanded naturopathic “birth bag,” and a renewed capacity to offer truly respectful, deeply responsive maternity care to the women and families [they] serve.” Even in home settings, “birth is becoming more medicalized,” Barbeau said. She advocates for a holistic approach, not necessarily rejecting allopathic medicine but working alongside it when needed or wanted. “It doesn’t have to be either/or.” Time-tested modalities used by midwives and doulas are more vital than ever, she said, and they are rarely being taught “on a level where they can be used in the profession…. from someone who actually uses it in the field.” Barbeau is the owner and founder of Indigo Forest, which was a class studio and natural health boutique in Ann Arbor from 2007 through 2016. The roots of the birth bag conference, she said, originate there, and it is a part of its ongoing project to bring holistic birth education and community to the area. “Real-life connection and wholesomeness,” said Barbeau, is important to the experience of passing down this generational knowledge, and she intends the conference to provide it. Topics and tools will include homeopathy, herbology, and other techniques, to ease challenges in labor, resolve situations before they escalate, and help the practitioner feel prepared when labor doesn’t go exactly as planned, all through a naturopathic midwifery lens. More information and online registration is available at learn.indigoforest.com/ holisticbirthbagconference. Beth Barbeau can reached by email at info@indigoforest.com or by phone at (734) 994-8010.

Spiritual Mentorship

for death and afterlife orientation By Michelle A. McLemore, CHTP, Rev. Low embers cast a comforting glow from the fireplace. I sat in the recliner next to the hospital bed we had moved into the room. I observed the shallow rise and fall in my mother’s chest. I hoped my consistent energy reassured her. We daughters tended, listened, watched, and recorded in a family journal when medications were administered, bodily constitutions occurred, when she might sip water, as well as when she had discussions with spirits that we could not perceive. We were blessed that Mom felt safe enough to share her experiences in the months and hours leading up to her transition from this world. Hers was the fourth close family death in four years. I felt that sharing the sacredness of these journeys—the before, during, and after—could help others refine their anxieties about passing and what it means to be alive. So, let us explore endings, beginnings, and continuations of soul connectivity.

∞ Spiritual interventions offer reassurance to move beyond the physical body for transcendent enlightenment. The Torah, Bible, and Quran staunchly preach that only the Supreme Divine knows the exact timing of one’s death. The Torah states in Job 14:5, “You [God] know how many months we will live, and we are not given a minute longer.” The Quran, verse 57.3, describes Allah as having complete knowledge of all things, all-encompassing—beyond human perception and time. In Christianity’s New Testament, Matthew 24:36 states, “But about that day [the day of one’s death] or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son but only the Father.”

We were blessed that Mom felt safe enough to share her experiences in the months and hours leading up to her transition from this world. Yet, I would direct you to these scriptures’ focus on the exact moment of passing, allowing that angels, ancestors, and even the participant might know it is forthcoming. Per research, traditional Judaism suggests a belief that spirit relatives of someone dying may visit or even accompany a dying person into the afterlife. Sufi Islam, Hinduism, and many in the metaphysical community along with interstellar channelers and mediums, hold that it is possible for a person to have feelings of, or receive signs relating to, life transition.

experiences. In a study by Christopher W. Kerr, MD, PhD working in Buffalo, New York, out of 59 patients in Hospice, 88.1% reported at least one dream or vision of a deceased relative or friend. Other Hospice research recounts that “visits” are predominantly reported in the final 48 hours of life. Whether this is when visits occur the most or this is when people are most likely to share their experiences, remains a question. DBVs include angels, beings of light, orbs, and religious figures floating at the ceiling. Others include deceased relatives standing at the side of the bed or hanging about in the room talking, making jokes, and reassuring the patient they would accompany them on departure.

End of life doulas, Hospice workers, and palliative care givers have stories aplenty which align across cultures and times that we are not alone and that there is (more often than not) a process of acclimation to the separation of body and soul. One elderly man described to his wife a dog that was sitting near him in the hospital room. Later, the wife went through photos from the man’s youth and found a photo of his childhood dog—long deceased—looking exactly as her husband had described in his final hours. Patricia Cota-Robles of eraofpeace.org, recently shared an experience her husband had. One morning, her husband confided that he dreamt he was told he was going to be leaving and would not be able to remain with his wife. She reassured him they would always be contactable through his heart. She asked if their deceased son, Joao, was part of giving the message. Her husband acknowledged their son was in the dream and that he had said, “Don’t worry, Daddy. I’m going to be with you for the rest of your life.” Recalling the conversation eased his mind and he felt no further anxiousness during the rest of his time leading to his death. When my mother started to decline, she described on multiple occasions that her parents and siblings had visited at different times. On one particular night, all of her deceased family members came through at one time and then departed together. She was devastated about them leaving her behind. She was 84, in chronic pain, could barely see, had survived the death of her parents, all four of her younger siblings, her husband, and her only son. She was tired.

Additionally, end of life doulas, Hospice workers, and palliative care givers have stories aplenty which align across cultures and times that we are not alone and that there is (more often than not) a process of acclimation to the separation of body and soul. This process often involves direct spiritual mentorship from angels, spiritual guides, prophets, prior deceased ancestors, pets, and friends which help one come to terms with leaving the physical realm. In Genesis 25:8, Abraham dies and is “gathered to his people.” Similar phrases are used for Jacob, Moses, and David, implying even biblically there is existence after death.

Yet, spiritual family visits aren’t isolated to the person transitioning. Sometimes they are encountered by attending family members as well. Two months prior to Mom’s passing, it was my sister Lisa’s turn to stay and keep an eye on Mom. During the night, Lisa dreamt of herself sleeping in the exact location. Our brother, Charles, who had passed about two years prior, peeked in the front window and woke her. He asked if Mom was around because he’d come to see her. Lisa suggested she was either in the back bathroom or in the bedroom. Her position shifted and she could see Charles standing in the front yard. He paused and said, “I can’t wait. I have to go help somebody now.” He turned, walked across the road and into the field on the other side where his body slowly faded away.

Deathbed Visions (DBVs) of deceased loved ones have been recorded to occur between 87 days and up to hours of a dying person’s passing. Most visits have been recorded by doctors and Hospice workers charting their patients’

CW Book Picks

of the month

In October 1582, millions of people went to sleep on one date—and woke up on another. Ten days were gone. Erased from the calendar. Never lived. Never experienced. What really happened to those missing days? The Days That Never Existed uncovers the true story behind one of history’s strangest corrections—when humanity realized it had been measuring time wrong for over 1,600 years. Written in a cinematic, story-driven nonfiction style, this book takes readers from ancient Rome to Renaissance Europe, revealing how a tiny error of just 11 minutes per year slowly grew into a crisis powerful enough to erase days from existence. Inside this book, you’ll discover: Why Julius Caesar’s calendar was brilliant—but flawed. How a small astronomical mistake silently shifted the seasons. Why Easter, faith, and astronomy collided. What really happened during October 1582. Why people believed their lives had been shortened. How countries lived on different dates at the same time. Why the Gregorian calendar still governs your life today.

The secret history of the American women who served as codebreakers during World War II is revealed in this New York Times bestseller. Recruited by the U.S. Army and Navy from small towns and elite colleges, more than ten thousand women served as codebreakers during World War II. While their brothers and boyfriends took up arms, these women moved to Washington and learned the meticulous work of code-breaking. Their efforts shortened the war, saved countless lives, and gave them access to careers previously denied to them. A strict vow of secrecy nearly erased their efforts from history; now, through dazzling research and interviews with surviving code girls, bestselling author Liza Mundy brings to life this riveting and vital story of American courage, service, and scientific accomplishment.

From the bestselling author of The Psychopath Test and So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed comes a darkly comic trip to the furthest reaches of the masculinity crisis. His only child is lured to a mysterious castle in the forests of New England late one night, sending Jon Ronson on an extraordinary adventure into a dark world of unmoored men desperately searching for purpose and control— whatever the cost. With zero warning, the crisis of masculinity and its bizarre, wrecking-ball manifestations had crashed into Jon’s life. As his investigation deepens, urgent questions come to light: What exactly is “Princessing”? Why did a lawn care influencer dress as a baby in front of billions of online viewers? How did a paid-up member of the Skeptic Society derail his life in the name of a warped vision of chivalry? And, more pressingly, why are two recently released murderers on their way to pay Jon a visit? In our rapidly changing society, many men have become detached from reality; some are behaving like separatists, while others have fallen deep down ideological rabbit holes. Is this a complete fracturing of society, a new era of disinhibition where anything goes? Drawing on his trademark brand of humor, psychological insight, and unrivaled prescience, The Castle marks Jon Ronson’s long-awaited return to the written page in his darkest and most insightful book yet—one where he throws open the doors to the Castle and reveals a new lost generation of men.

PRETENDING

By Katherine Munter

“When children pretend, they’re using their imaginations to move beyond the bounds of reality. A stick can be a magic wand. A sock can be a puppet. A small child can be a superhero.” -Fred Rogers When I was a child, Halloween meant handmade costumes and the ability to become anything, if only for a night. My mom would somehow piece together scraps of fabric and create magic. Her sewing machine whirred in protest as it moved its way through thick cloth. We’d watch her work in hopeful anticipation of what would come together. At a time when many of my friends wore molded plastic masks that collected condensation in the autumn air, I would be comfortable in my cotton costumes. One of my most treasured outfits was of Holly Hobbie. I gleefully tied a blue bonnet over my long braids, looked in the mirror, and swished my skirt across my bloomers. In that moment, I’d transformed into the character printed on my favorite bedsheets. Porch lights cast long shadows across lawns as jack o’lanterns flickered, smelling of sweet squash mixed with melted wax. The remaining maple foliage rattled overhead as the cold wind tried to rip it from the branches. I loved the earthy smell of decaying plants and the crunch of dried leaves underfoot. I carried a pillowcase of candy, which grew heavier in my hands as I collected my treasure. When my own children began to ask for costumes, I delighted in creating designs that could incorporate a winter coat if needed. I tried to get them to finalize their decisions with plenty of time. Still, I often found myself working on last-minute changes late into the night. I was uplifted by their smiles and glistening eyes as they took on new personas. Rather than tuck the costumes away with the Halloween decor, we kept them in their closets, and they often appeared in pretend play with friends. They’d often dress up in a mix of

different pieces. Pirate dinosaurs chased one another with magic wands, and rambunctious butterfly squirrels held dance parties in the living room. Imposter syndrome is a bit like dressing up in an ill-fitting costume, where you attune to the restrictive, itchy fabric. It’s a feeling that you’re somehow tricking everyone around you, yet with a deep, underlying fear that others will see through your facade and realize you’re a fraud. Your self-conscious inner critic tells you that everyone knows more than you, while you are hiding under a fragile illusion. Over the years, with time and experience, I’ve gotten better at navigating these thoughts. However, there are still moments when imposter syndrome rears its head. On the first day teachers were back at school, before the students roamed the halls, I was asked to present to school social workers. It was 7:30 in the morning, and I was walking up to a local high school with a coffee in hand, pulling a full wagon of art supplies. I noticed a group of people gathered by the auditorium and figured there was a student event happening, as the pom squad and some band members were milling about. I turned and started to head for the main door, away from the crowd. A staff member approached and redirected me to enter through the auditorium, directly through the lines of pompoms. I tried again to avoid, and he smiled, nodded his head in encouragement, and pointed me toward the auditorium. I let out a deep breath and walked up the sidewalk toward the pom squad. The team got amped. Metallic puffs of green and gold shook on either side of me, amidst cheers of “Happy first day! Welcome back!” I wanted to explain that it wasn’t my first day back, that I was just there to lead a training. I fumbled my words, so I simply smiled, thanked them, and kept walking forward. I was glad the teachers were being celebrated yet knew the fanfare wasn’t meant for me. The guilt of accepting praise that wasn’t mine weighed on me as I walked up the hill to the auditorium doors. I was relieved to get closer. Just as I opened the door, a student in a kilt began to play the bagpipes. The rich, emotional drone of the pipes grounded me fully in the moment and carried all thoughts into the wind. This autumn, as the night grows longer and the autumn winds blow, I encourage you to find a playful side of yourself. What would you dress up as, if you could be anything, and is there a part of that persona that you’d like to fold into your daily life?

From Our Archives

By Irena Barbara Nagler One Halloween, the night when barriers are said to dissolve between dimensions, as perhaps they do every night, my friend Marin and I took a ceremonial walk after dark through Bird Hills Nature Area. We stopped to read poetry and tell dreams at places we knew in the forest. We carried a candle-lantern that cast more shadow than light. Sorcerous mantles extended from it, flickering and expanding. In the electric hush and rustling of the autumn woods, far more awake than somnolent, we were startled once by the voices of another group of celebrants clustered near the biggest oak tree. With its large, low-growing branches, it clearly began life before most of this forest was planted. One morning a few years before I’d found on it burnt-down blue candles remaining from some ritual or tryst. On this night the two boys and a girl sitting under it, perhaps startled by us as well, departed down one of the darkened paths. The new forest, still hosting the spirit of an older one, hid us from each other again, wrapping us in a wind-stirred night. The forest was alive with the soft scrape of dry, fingerlike leaves. The oak tree hefted up its own nocturnal roads, limbs and branches extending into folds of living darkness. Intruders, we might have been, but humans once knew the night, and some of us are drawn to part those living curtains and explore it. I had made a necklace to give the woods as a gift. Once or twice the ground beneath me seemed to yank it out of my hands, as though it became a gravitational divining rod for something compelling beneath the forest soil. The necklace lay in the path, seeming as startled as I was, and I picked it up again. When I felt it was time to hang it in the branches of a small tree, I became aware of the rushing of water pouring through the seep that runs down one of the hills.

is how it’s done, he said, become inseparable from light, from shadow, from architecture and place, merge with its dreaming. I felt I had not known him until then, nor had he ever been more elusive and memorable. Forward many years: Paula Frank, my niece Kes Nagler, and I were on a night walk to Barton Nature Area and the dam. Insects sang among grasses and bristling trees and shrubs. We crossed the pedestrian bridge, with the view over the oxbow drenched in silvers and grays. The woods were black and the curve of wetland I had seen under many moon-phases bright and wavering with water. We moved onto the old canal path and passed a tree whose upper branches form a star thrusting up above smaller trees. A friend calls it the Owl Tree. I’d once seen an owl flying near it, a gray comet, soundless. I call it the Star Tree, for the many times I have seen stars bejewel its branches. Once, in daylight, I found a secret: iron spikes thrust into its trunk, probably many years ago, now incorporated in its growth. Were they steps up to some long-ago treehouse? The three of us had planned a trip to an observatory that night, but chose to walk here instead because the sky was overcast. But we saw glowworms on the ground, little earth-stars. Their light was whiter than the greenish-gold I recalled from other summers. It seemed almost a camouflage—a reflection of contemporary humans’ LED lighting. They were living diamonds jeweling the area beneath the bushes that crowded in on the path. We walked a labyrinth, an area more extensive and deep than I’d known before, moving between trees and bushes, among the baby fireflies and crickets, the place seeping into our blood. We agreed that one must get lost in order to find some things; let the place itself speak and lead us. Ahead I could see what looked like the ridge of woods at Barton Hills, but we did not reach the dam.

Folded into another hillside is an old orchard at the edge of the Leslie Golf Course. On a recent full moon night, the bright eye shined through the high branches of trees so old and tall that the forest was darker than night beneath them, though fallen walnuts glimmered yellow-green. Just beyond two fences the trees (pear trees, according to a naturalist friend) are spaced apart from each other, each with its distinct shape and character: gnarled, scraggy, tough yet delicately-formed. Together in the night they form a field of doorways, a place where the multiverse seems near and one might visit alternate worlds. Nighttime opens seams that stitch the trees into a loose weave of passageways and synapses. Though nearby housing developments cast too much light for clear visibility, I imagine them holding up a network of stars in their branches.

Soon we found we had looped back onto the known path. My niece read her GPS, and we headed in the “right” direction. We crossed the bridge and arrived at the dam area. A weight of silvery water lapped the edge of the path. In the open area across it, a powerful welter of it poured down the dam and the pool churned. The high wall of the building loomed ahead. There is a sense of fulfillment here. I remembered volleys of big fish leaping one moonlit night years ago, silver-grey, launching themselves out of and splashing in dark whorls.

During his three university residencies in Ann Arbor (1921-26), Robert Frost wrote the poem “Acquainted with the Night.” The title evokes a sentience that might lay hands upon the wanderer who moves as though on a deserted stage with scenery remaining from a play.

We climbed the stairway onto the dam and walked the bridge of it. Halfway across, you can look out and sense the surge of the river and see white water muscling and pouring away into night, the Bird Hills forest rising beyond and its living presence piercing through the dark massing of trees.

As a student I lived for ten months in a group house owned by a professor’s family on sabbatical. They had left their disgruntled cat with us. He felt abandoned, and we had reason to believe he was too often the butt of jokes among his people. He loved one of the young sons of the family and would often appear on a roof projection at the window of my room, which belonged to the boy, and demand to be let in. I also had the job of feeding him.

We talked of the electricity of this place where industry and wildness converge. Paula mentioned that Alice Cooper had called Southeast Michigan “intense.” We felt an old, old magic. I think of salt seeps in the ground, extending into the middle of the peninsula, emanating from great deposits of halite under Wayne and Monroe Counties: remnants of ancient seas.

One summer night, before students dispersed for the year, a housemate and I took a walk in the neighborhood. The black cat slipped out to follow, or rather, to precede us. We passed a house with an elongated porch arcade on one side, edged with rectangular columns. The cat suddenly darted into its interior. He began to patter swiftly between the columns, appearing, disappearing, pulling out the stops on his cat magic and demonstrating to us how to walk at night. This

An orange light-fixture on the dam building turns on, with a buzzing sound, then off, then on again periodically. It is a haunting night-rhythm, an inarticulate warning.

December in Gallup Park. Full moon, river-pools, white-shining rocks, trees and silver pathways. Around the moon is a large, clear area, bounded by a strange, full-circle cloud formation, like a wheel-rim. From the wheel, wisps of horsetail clouds radiate outward.

What Happens After the Music Brings Us Together

By Harris Schwartzberg College isn’t easy, no matter how many smiling faces we see on Instagram. For many students, it’s their first time living away from home—managing classes, work and relationships while trying to make new friends and figure out where they belong. A campus can be full of people and still feel lonely. You can have classmates, roommates and a phone full of contacts, yet struggle with a simple question: Who can I ask to have dinner with tonight? That is why we created Future Friends. In her recent Crazy Wisdom article, “Beyond Kirtan and Sound Bowls: Live Music for Wellbeing,” Dr. Anna C. Gersh explored how music affects us and the community that forms around a live performance. Her article speaks to something at the heart of our work at Two Bridge: music gives people a reason to come together. What we create around that experience can help them connect. I founded Two Bridge in memory of my brother, Steven, whom I lost in 2008, and later co-founded Future Friends with my daughter, Sabrina Schwartzberg. We want more people to feel connected, know they have someone to turn to and feel comfortable reaching for support. As a University of Michigan alumnus, bringing Future Friends to Ann Arbor on October 6 means a great deal to us. We can’t put the burden of belonging entirely on students. Telling someone to “be more outgoing” overlooks how hard it can be to approach a group when you don’t know where you fit. We need to create more natural opportunities to meet someone new. Music can do that. We sit together, listen, smile and sing along. We may know nothing about the person beside us, but we already have something in common. A song, a lyric or a moment in the show can make that first conversation easier. Students don’t have to identify as lonely or share a personal struggle to belong at Future Friends. They can come because they love the artist, want to learn a dance or simply want to try something different. The invitation is just to show up and Be Here. At Michigan, Dasha is part of that invitation, performing and hosting Boots & Besties, our line-dancing experience. You miss a step, laugh and ask the person next to you for help. Chances are, they’re figuring it out too. Learning and looking a little silly together gives people permission to relax and be themselves. Our Social Club with Kanso creates another opportunity, with music, games and conversation prompts in a phone-free setting. Without phones competing for attention, students have time to listen, ask another question and see where a conversation goes.

The experience continues with a screening of Common Denominator’s Noah Kahan episode. Hearing someone students admire speak honestly about his struggles can create a safe space for students to recognize parts of their own experience. There’s no pressure to share—just an opening for someone to say, “I’ve felt that too.” I have little interest in blaming students for the digital world they inherited. Online friendships matter, and phones help us stay connected across distance. But we can’t just tell young people to put down their phones. We need to give them a reason to. That’s what we’re trying to create with Future Friends: experiences where the person next to you becomes more interesting than the phone in your hand. At the heart of it is a simple message: Be Here. Be here for yourself, your friends and someone who may need a little boost. What that means is different for everyone. Be a listener, a study buddy, a workout partner or the friend who cooks dinner. Send the invitation. Notice when someone has gone quiet. Make room for one more person at the table. You don’t need all the answers to be someone another person can count on. At Two Bridge and Future Friends, we believe connection is the intervention. A concert, a dance or a conversation can open a door—to a new friendship, an honest conversation or support someone didn’t know how to find. Our partnership with NAMI and campus resources helps students take that next step when they need it. Future Friends’ mental wellness programming is free for currently enrolled students at participating campuses. The live music performance requires a nominal donation to an aligned mental wellness nonprofit. Ultimately, we want students to leave with someone they’re glad they met—and a reason to see that person again. Maybe it’s dinner, another dance or a conversation that continues tomorrow. That’s how a campus begins to feel like a community: show up, make room and Be Here.

Harris Schwartzberg is the founder of Two Bridge, a co-founder of Future Friends Campus Series, and a University of Michigan alumnus.
