A Visit to Leslie Science & Nature Center and the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum By Susan Slack • Photos Courtesy of The Leslie Science & Nature Center and The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum Most Ann Arborites know the Leslie Science & Nature Center (LSNC) off Traver Road is free and open to the public. When was the last time you visited? Maybe you played around on the lawn, in the woods, or in the unique, tunneled playground on a school field trip. Or maybe you showed up for the Annual Earth Day Event or October’s Animal Haunts. The property is still there, better than ever, with a friendly crew to help you when you desire it. Some day you might just want to wander around, or let your mind relax on the Black Pond Woods nature trail. As you approach the property, after the peaceful ride through the local neighborhood, you can’t help but notice the old home on the crest of a hill. There are stairs and inclines leading up to the group of buildings and classrooms.
The full one-mile hike loops past the Black Pond with a detour to climb down to a bridge to get a closer look. It is dark water as you might be able to guess by its moniker. Experienced hikers call this an “easy hike,” but you can be the judge. To the right of the parking lot, you will see framed gardening plots. These are spaces open to the public and offered by a separate not-for-profit, “Project Grow.” If you go into and then pass the garden plots, you will see the trail head (the entrance) to the Black Pond Trail, a 34-acre woodland nature area, currently part of the City of Ann Arbor Park system. There are slight inclines and some roots and rocks, so be mindful where you step. The full one-mile hike loops past the Black Pond, with a detour to climb down to a bridge to get a closer look. It is dark water, as you might be able to guess by its moniker. Experienced hikers call this an “easy hike,” but you can be the judge. The largest building on the homestead property is on the right as you continue uphill, the Energy House. It’s on the former site of Leslie’s Lab, but now it holds the largest classroom on the campus. Many of Dr. Leslie’s inventions are displayed on the upper shelf around the room. As you make your way uphill, you can see that the lovely homestead still stands. Its spacious porch with the unique ironwork overlooks our downtown in winter when the leaves have shed. You’re welcome to go on the porch and have a look. Inside the house (open only for programs) original bookshelves and a small kitchen in original condition are still there. Classes are taught in the living room. Continue up the main path and find the two arena-style curved field stone benches. What can happen in that space between the house and the seats? Anything! What would you like to see there?

I was fortunate enough to be shown around by Susan Westhoff, President and CEO. Open, happy, smart, steady, and very helpful—she’s just the kind of person you hope would be at the helm of such an organization. Together we strolled the property, arriving at the outdoor enclosures called Raptor Loop that house native predator birds who cannot live in the wild. Can we talk about that eagle? It is huge. Did you know eagles were that big? “We don’t know what gender it is,” Westhoff explained when we queried. Of course, we followed up with asking why don’t they just look underneath? And she replied, “It’s not like that with raptors. We think she is female by her size, since they are usually bigger than males.” Hoping for a big journalistic scoop, we asked its name. “This eagle isn’t named because it is not a pet, and we want kids to know that.” They offer the opportunity for financial “adoption,” which means you can donate (starting at $50 a year) to the upkeep of the animals. In exchange you receive discounts for classes offered at the center. The popular Critter House is up there, too. It is housed in what used to be the Honey House, where Emily Leslie kept bees. There is a strong animal smell when you enter. That’s okay, let it wake your olfactory. We took a quick peek into the old garage, which has transformed into a virtual teaching studio complete with a green screen. “We serve people in remote areas who are without access to a hands-on museum learning opportunity,” Westhoff said proudly. You’ll find the fire pit up toward the top of the hill. Sit on a log in a circle around it and dream of drippy marshmallows, and everyone singing off-key folk songs such as “Oh, my darlin’ Clementine.” If you look toward the woods, you’ll see the other end of the Black Pond trail. Speaking of sitting, the Leslie Science & Nature Center has plenty of picnic tables and benches scattered around for a picnic lunch.

Sit on a log in a circle around it and dream of drippy marshmallows and everyone singing off-key folk songs such as “Oh, my darlin’ Clementine.” And how about that Nature Playscape, with slides and a tunnel to run through in which you are welcome to check for echoes? The water pump awaits your dry clothes. If you like watching children-in-the-wild, this is the place. There are enticing paths to small areas where kids and their imaginations make of it what they want.
The Crazy Wisdom Monthly, November 1, 2026 The LSNC offers many scheduled programs for all ages throughout the summer. It simmers down as winter approaches, but they continue to offer many programs all year long. The best way to stay informed is to sign up for their newsletter on the website and check out membership options. Even if you’re not a member, you can rent areas for parties and events. All ages are welcome whether coming with a group or as a family. Viki D. went on such a trip organized by the Turner Senior Resource Center which is part of Michigan Medicine. She’s 74 and frequently uses a walker. Did she have trouble getting around on the property? “No,” she answered from her car when I asked. “There are walkways and you can always find a ramp. But it takes some doing.” She stressed that it’s not like walking in a mall. You have to pay attention. She said the only steps she encountered were the two going into the Critter House.

Westhoff reported that they have plans to improve accessibility. “We used to get a lot of Senior groups before Covid. We are hoping to build that back up.” Referring to the presentation in the Critter House, Viki reported, “The talk that Lisa gave to our group was great. She’s been there with animals for thirteen years. Lisa told us she was grateful to talk with adults because she can use big words.” Ten-year-old Penelope S. has been to LSNC many times with school field trips, and with her grandmother on Earth Day. “Sometimes my family goes on weekends when there’s nothing else to do.” Her favorite part is walking past the bird cages, especially the eagle. The second best is the playground with the giant slide and tunnel. She remembered going on the nature trails in the woods during a birthday party. She loved “hearing noises of the animals and bird calls.” When asked if she recommends LSNC, Penelope answered enthusiastically, “Yes! It’s really cool, especially for people who like birds.”

What’s New in the Community Spotlight!
By Lynda Gronlund Cindy Akans opened Salt Springs Massage in January of 2025. A Saline native and graduate of the Ann Arbor School of Massage, Herbal & Natural Medicine, she has been practicing massage therapy for twenty years. Prior to becoming a massage therapist, Akans worked in the field of physical therapy as a physical therapy technician and aqua therapist for eight years, gaining experience and insight into helping people heal from injuries, traumas, and surgeries. She has training in a variety of bodywork modalities including soft tissue, deep tissue, assisted stretching, cupping, craniosacral therapy, myofascial massage, and sensory approach to manual therapy. Last year she became certified in Myoskeletal Alignment Technique at a training in Frankfurt, Germany. This year she intends to receive training in postmastectomy massage and heated bamboo massage, allowing for deeper tissue penetration for those who need it.. “A lot of women are not given good, or any, instruction on post-mastectomy care to their surgical site,” she said, “which is where massage therapy can be very helpful.” All of the training she has received is inspired by the needs of her clients. Earlier this year, Akans was recognized by BusinessRate as the best massage therapy provider in Saline, based on customer experience, consistency, and review quality among local competitors. The building Salt Springs Massage occupies sits behind Salt Spring Brewery, which is also named for Saline’s historic salt springs. The brewery occupies the building that once housed the Methodist Church Akans grew up in; her office was once part of the Sunday school. Nearby are what remain of the salt springs that gave Saline its name and were once used by Native Americans and French explorers. Akans said she visited the springs recently on an “adventure walk” though not much remains. She said that she loves having her own space to focus on giving her clients a great experience. Akans works with clients seeking massage for many reasons, but a particular area of specialty is lower back pain and sciatica which she has suffered with herself and learned how to treat through self-care and various techniques. She said that she always talks with clients before beginning their sessions, making sure to fully understand what is most important to them for the massage and talk through a plan with them first. She offers a variety of add-ons to enhance the experience including hand and foot rejuvenation, facials, and more. Salt Springs Massage Therapy is located at 75 East Henry Street, Saline, MI 48176. More information is online at saltpringsmassage.com, and Cindy Akans can be reached by phone at (734) 926-8003 or by email through the website form.

Letting Go
By Katherine Munter “He judged the instant and let go; he flung himself loose into the stars.” —Annie Dillard With a long out breath, my daughter closed her eyes and gave her baby tooth a gentle twist. Her eyes opened, and her delighted smile revealed a new gap. Gleefully snuggling into my arms, she cradled her tooth in her cupped hand. “It had been with me my whole life, so it didn’t want to come out,” she explained. “Want to know what I did when I closed my eyes? I told my tooth it could let go now.” I wistfully watched her exploring her new gap with her tongue, remembering when the tooth had first emerged through her toddler gums, seemingly not so long before. Time is never promised but rather a gift so quiet, we sometimes only notice it in the space left behind. Over the years since my daughter lost that tooth, I’ve often found myself longing to slow time, wanting to linger in moments, even as I delighted in watching my children grow and leap forward. For the past few years, we’ve shared our yard with an old cherry tree. The wide trunk was once two trees that grew together. My neighbor recently told me that the land we live on was once part of an orchard. The towering cherry behind our house was planted in 1878. My daughters named the tree Giant Jack. Recently, strong winds ripped through the area. I heard the sound of wood tearing, as though a tree was crying out before succumbing to the gale. A huge branch had fallen into the yard. My breath caught in my chest as I inspected the trunk and spotted what looked like long scratch marks carved into the bark— Giant Jack had sustained a major injury. “I’m so sorry,” the arborist told us, his brows arched with empathy. He feared one of the trunks was too damaged, and that another storm might cause it to fall into the house. The second stem, though there weren’t visible cracks, would become too imbalanced if only one side was cut. We made the painful decision to cut Giant Jack down.
My daughters told the majestic tree through tears that they loved him. I too ran my fingers over the textured bark, saying goodbye to the life that had been standing in that space much longer than I’ve walked the earth. I imagined the farmer who planted the trees, the hopeful fingers that had pushed the seeds into the soil. Images of the seasons we’d shared with the tree flashed through my mind. Late spring flower petals floated to the ground like gentle snowfall. When summer fruit dropped, chipmunks and squirrels feasted. In the fall, brilliant yellow leaves released into the wind and danced across the yard before resting on the ground. Inspired by the leaves, I would consider what I was carrying that I could let go. And then this summer, I had to let Giant Jack go. Sweet-smelling sawdust floated through the air— one last frolic in the wind before tumbling to the earth. When the mighty trunk was cut, we noticed deep cracks through the heartwood. I traced my fingers across the growth lines of the trees that had long ago fused together as one. Feeling my heart tugging in my chest, I looked at the space that remained and remembered the lesson my daughter had taught me. Closing my eyes, I thought, “You can let go now.” My words, meant for the tree, wrapped me in a gentle hug. This week, we’ve been cleaning up the garden beds, saving seeds, and pulling dry stalks. As we tugged at roots, I closed my eyes and sent gratitude for their bounty. Holding the seeds, I envisioned the farmer’s hands. I imagined the cherry pits that long ago grew into a giant tree, and the tiny miracles cradled in my cupped palm. What is something you’ve been holding onto that you might be ready to let go of or gift to someone else? A CONVERSATION ABOUT A MINING DISASTER By Peggy River-Singer Background: On November 3, 1926, 51 men died when the Barnes-Hecker iron mine in Ishpeming, Michigan collapsed. (Source: Michigan History Magazine March/April 2025) “Speaker” represents all aspects of the geological structures of the area. Peggy: May I please connect with the geological strata in the area of the Barnes-Hecker mine? Speaker: Yes. We are pleased to demonstrate that we are “beings” – right down to individual micro-grains of sand and their energetic composition – and not just inanimate chunks of rock.
Speaker: No harm at all, due to protective shielding and their ability to control their immediate surroundings. They thank you for your concern on their behalf. Peggy: Is there anything else you’d like to express today? Speaker: No. Peggy River-singer is an all-beings communicator, Pleiadian Starseed, and lifelong writer. More of her articles are posted on angelsfairiesandlife.wordpress. com. To schedule a communication session, please call 734-548-0194.
Peggy: I would appreciate hearing your perspective on this mine that collapsed a hundred years ago, please. Speaker: We were aware of the human activities at that location and others, just as we are aware of the tiniest ant moving grains of sand to create a living space of safety under the surface of the ground. We had watched that event develop and knew what the results would be; because to us, all timelines are happening at all moments. We did not trigger the sudden subsidence that destroyed the mine; neither did we attempt to prevent this from happening, or interfere in any other way. Everything happened as it was meant to happen. Peggy: Thank you. Do you object to human mining and earth moving? Speaker: No. We exist within a perspective of billions of years. Peggy: Are you aware of the spirits or souls of the humans who died underground? Speaker: Yes, we perceive them as faint traces of “something that was.” The trauma of realizing death would be inescapable left indelible energies behind. Some soul-fragments are frozen in that moment; some repeat their final actions endlessly; many continue to attempt to reach the surface. Peggy: When the mine collapsed, how far away were the vibrations/energies perceived by your people? Speaker: Ultimately, the whole planet. Peggy: Did the collapse of this mine cause major changes in the underground layers of rock? Speaker: Yes, to a distance of about 100 miles. Beyond that, the changes/ adjustments were more subtle.
Event Venue Rental
Crazy Wisdom Bookstore & Treasures
Host your next event in our upstairs venue at Crazy Wisdom Bookstore! Nestled in an iconic historic building on Main Street in downtown Ann Arbor, the space features a Meeting Room, Celestial Lounge, and Art Gallery. Full of vintage charm, it is perfect for intimate ceremonies, unique classes, workshops, or private gatherings.
Peggy: Were any beings living underground in that area? Speaker: A few non-physical star-wanderers who study human mining activities have an underground colony nearby, approximately a mile under the surface. They predicted every detail of how the event would develop, and the consequences became part of their observations. Peggy: Was there any harm to their colony, or their members?

The Crazy Wisdom Monthly, November 1, 2026 I still have the scar on my forearm from when I touched it to the edge of the oversized sheet pan after taking it out of the oven. It happened the first week I worked in a busy kitchen, one year ago. I wear it well.
From the Archives
MANUAL L AB O R By Marie Duquette
At age sixty-three, after a lifetime of jobs that demanded my brains, wit, voice, compassion, and leadership, I jumped into the most physically demanding job of my life. I did not anticipate that this season of semi-retirement would include working with a dozen chefs in a busy kitchen. I did not imagine pouring off boiling water from heavy pots of pasta or using just one hand to transfer sheet pans of chicken breasts from the oven to the quick-cooler while my other hand was holding the door of the cooler open.
At age sixty-three, after a lifetime of jobs that demanded my brains, wit, voice, compassion, and leadership, I jumped into the most physically demanding job of my life. I imagined this season would continue my lifetime occupation of sitting at a desk, leaning heavily into my mind, my imagination, and my keyboard. I didn’t realize that this plan would come up short in compensation, in health insurance, in engagement with the world, or in the ways my body needed to move to be healthy. For the last year, I have been working in a busy industrial kitchen where we make catering-sized trays of pulled barbecue, cashew chicken, and eggplant parmesan, among other things. We make four homemade soups daily, simmering the stocks all night long. We make our own salad dressings, pesto, and mayonnaise. We use an immersion blender the size of an upright vacuum cleaner. I walk an average of four miles per a six-and-a-half-hour shift, including up and down steel stairs that separate the front of the house from the back. At Thanksgiving, we roasted 400 turkeys. We prepared, boxed, and delivered more than 200 feasts with a wide variety of side dishes.
“Physical labor, manual labor—if you can stay close to those folks, there’s always plenty to write about, ‘cause their issues are the real issues.” —Jason Isbell
We carried walkie-talkies on the two days those customers picked up their dinners, so that the front of the house could easily tell the back of the house which customer had arrived, and a runner could select their side dishes from refrigerated racks, box their full order, and rush it to them. Everything in this kitchen is big. The steel pots in which I boil water for orzo, penne, and couscous hold forty quarts of water. The sheet pans are 13” x 18” and tall racks on wheels hold twenty pans each. The separated stainless sinks are bigger than the biggest bathtub I’ve ever seen. Musical artist, Jason Isbell wrote, “Physical labor, manual labor – if you can stay close to those folks, there’s always plenty to write about, ‘cause their issues are the real issues.” I was a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America for twenty years, serving four congregations, in three separate states. In retrospect, the conversations I had in that profession seem too measured, too careful, more scripted than any I’ve had during my year with the chefs. In our kitchen, we listen to loud, raucous, often vulgar music. I use a chef knife to chop everything, no matter how small the dice. And as the day goes on, and chefs toss their black sauce-spotted aprons into the laundry can, I often find myself in conversations about real issues with the few who are left. We talk about work shoes and tattoos. We talk about health issues, the inadequacies of insurance, and the challenge of caring for extended family. We talk about grief and the way it shapeshifts but never completely goes away. Six months into this job, I had to take several weeks off because of a cyst in the back of my left leg. I felt ashamed, as if this new condition was my fault for not being as fit as I was in the first half of my life. My leg felt like a saturated upright post on an old fishing dock—both painful and heavy to move. When I came in to tell my coworkers I needed some time off, they treated me like a family member they had known for a lifetime instead of a worker they had just recently met. And when I came back, they acted as if they had been waiting up all night for me to return.
When I was a pastor, I talked a lot about building relationships, living in community, and feeding people. Now that I am an aging woman in a busy kitchen, I am the one being fed. My coworkers are immigrants, transgender, and gay. They are young couples with feisty children and seniors trying to make ends meet. They take short breaks to smoke, sitting on a milk crate against an outside wall of the kitchen. Many of them are bilingual. All of them are funny. It is the most diverse community I have ever known. Chef Dominique Crenn said, “Being a chef is about feeding people, which is part of the story of all humanity. And in all five versions of the story of the loaves and the fishes in the New Testament, Jesus responds to his disciple’s question about how to feed the throngs of people by saying, “You feed them.”

CW Book Picks

Newbery Medal winner Katherine Paterson and cut-paper artist Pamela Dalton give fans of all ages even more to be thankful for with Giving Thanks, a special book about gratitude. Katherine Paterson’s meditations on what it means to be truly grateful and Pamela Dalton’s exquisite cut-paper illustrations are paired with a collection of over 50 graces, poems, and praise songs from a wide range of cultures, religions, and voices. The unique collaboration between these two extraordinary artists flowers in this important and stunningly beautiful reflection on the act of giving thanks.
Trade Grumbling for Gratitude—Experience God like Never Before The apostle Paul instructed the Philippians to be anxious in nothing and thankful in everything. And when he said everything—he meant everything. We can all agree that this is easier said than done. Disappointments and discontent may cause you to slip into dissatisfaction, and grumbling becomes a state of mind—gratitude seems impossible to find. However, what if this is the precise reason you lack the joy of a God-filled life? Instead of a reaction to when things are going well, what if gratitude is actually necessary to knowing the hope of our gracious God? This is exactly what Pastor Dustin Crowe identifies in The Grumbler’s Guide to Giving Thanks. Dustin examines the biblical foundations of thankfulness and traces how it can reshape every-day Christian living. When we express gratitude in all things, we not only praise our Creator, we also get to know Him better. With The Grumbler’s Guide, you’ll learn how to practice thanksgiving in both simple and extraordinary ways, even when you’re tempted to dwell on the negative. You’ll find your outlook on life realigned to see the hand of God in everything, strengthening your trust in Him. And in doing so, you’ll find greater, more joy-filled reasons to continue expressing thanks to our good and generous God.
Something that matters to you just isn’t right. First you see the problem, then you feel it. It starts with a rush of adrenaline and often a rush of words, but it ends with an overwhelming sense of irritation that impacts how we talk to those we live and work with, complaining, and maybe even a settled bitterness to a person or a group of person. We know anger affects us negatively, but we don’t know any other way to respond when life goes wrong. Good and Angry, a groundbreaking new book from David Powlison, contends that anger is more than a problem to solve. Anger is our complex human response to things we perceive as wrong in a complex world, thus we must learn how to fruitfully and honestly deal with it. Powlison undertakes an in-depth exploration of the roots of anger, moral judgment, and righteous response by looking in a surprising place: God’s own anger. Powlison reminds us that God gets angry too. He sees things in this world that aren’t right and he wants justice too. But God’s anger doesn’t devolve into manipulation or trying to control others to get his own way. Instead his anger is good and redemptive. It causes him to step into our world to make wrongs right, sending his own Son to die so that we can be reconciled. He is both our model for change and our power to change. Good and Angry sets readers on a path toward a faithful and fruitful expression of anger, in which we return good for evil and redeem wrongs. Powlison offers practical help for people who struggle with irritation, complaining, or bitterness and gives guidance for how to respond constructively when life goes wrong. You, your family, and your friends will all be glad that you read this book. In our fractured, “me-first” world, the science and practice of thankfulness could be just the antidote we need. Gratitude is powerful: not only does it feel good, it’s also been proven to increase our well-being in myriad ways. The result of a multiyear collaboration between the Greater Good Science Center and Robert Emmons of the University of California, Davis, The Gratitude Project explores gratitude’s deep roots in human psychology—how it evolved and how it affects our brain—as well as the transformative impact it has on creating a meaningful life and a better world. With essays based on new findings from this original research and written by renowned positive psychologists and public figures, this important book delves deeply into the neuroscience and psychology of gratitude, and explores how thankfulness can be developed and applied, both personally and in communities large and small, for the benefit of all. With contributions from luminaries such as Sonja Lyubomirsky, W. Kamau Bell, Arianna Huffington, and many more, this edited volume offers more than just platitudes—it offers a blueprint for a new and better world.

By Frank Vandervort The westbound traffic on Interstate 94 is at a crawl this morning and I couldn’t be happier. It’s a Wednesday and brilliant sunshine glints in my rearview mirror. About halfway between home and my office at the university, a small marsh lays up next to the highway partly shadowed by the Platt Road overpass. Tucked in behind a red brick apartment building along the edge of a residential neighborhood, the marsh covers an acre, maybe two. On the edge furthest from the highway, there is an area of open water. The basin containing the marsh is deep enough that this pool never dries up, though for much of the summer, when the hydrophytes are at their tallest, passersby on the expressway get only an occasional glimpse of the water. The interstate and the surface road flow day and night with traffic—cars, trucks, motorcycles, recreational vehicles of every description. However, the marsh’s proximity to all that human activity does not prevent it from being an active bit of the natural world. Science has caught up to what we humans know intuitively: exposure to nature, even a little, and even if under less-than-ideal circumstances, when we cannot immerse ourselves, has tangible benefits for our physical and emotional health. Exposure to the out-of-doors has been shown to reduce stress, speed recovery from illness and injury, and to reduce the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children. Living in a suburban area, and working on an urban campus, my mind and body sometimes longs, even aches, for the chance to be immersed in nature. I pass this little marsh two or three times a week, and sometimes five, so I have the chance to observe it as it changes gradually throughout the year. In late August, as the new school year approaches, the marsh grasses, the cattails, and the sedges are dense and green. When the breeze stirs them, they sway together like so many waltzing couples. In a few weeks, as the shortening days of late summer fold into the even shorter days of autumn, the color will gradually drain away. The grasses, cattails, and sedges will grow at first tawny, then brown, then a sickly, almost colorless, cream. Rather than dance in the gentle breeze, their dried stalks will rattle and scrape in the sharper winds of winter. The view of the pool, which has been partially obscured for the past several months by the robust flora, will open again. Some mornings, small flocks of ducks, Canada geese, or a pair of swans float in the open water, using the small pool as a layover during migration. The water on which they bob ranges in color from light blue to near black as it reflects the changing conditions of the sky. This morning it is a light gray, the slanting morning sunlight having not yet reached the water’s surface. The passing fowl are there for a day or two and then they are gone. On chill autumn mornings fog (caused when the cool air passes over the warmer water) rises from the pond. Later in the fall, around Thanksgiving most years, ice develops on the pool. Recent winters have been so mild the water is often open into January. When the surface does freeze solid, snow blows in wispy, curling fingers across the ice, accumulating along its edges, where the foliage acts like a natural snow fence. One thing that does not change is the half-dozen or so dead hardwoods scattered in the marsh and around its edge. One is large and has plainly stood in its place for decades. A maple, I think, its trunk straight and thick. The tree has been dead long enough that its smaller branches have fallen away, and its bark is sluffing off. The presence of these snags makes me wonder about the origin of the marsh. The basin must be of relatively recent vintage given that the area was at one time dry enough for these hardwoods to reach full maturity before drowning. Is the marsh the result of the unintended impoundment of water that resulted from the construction of the interstate and the surface street? Is it a glacial pothole that has gradually expanded to encroach on the adjacent hardwoods? Or is it simply a low spot in the ground that has, over the years, filled with rainwater and snowmelt?
