What do people do?
On the direction of the President, the flag of the United States of America should be displayed on the homes of Americans, the White House and all United States government buildings in the whole world. The flag should be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect to those who died on September 11, 2001. Many people observe a moment of silence at 8:46 AM (Eastern Daylight Time). This marks the time that the first plane flew into the World Trade Center. Some communities, particularly in the areas directly affected by the attacks, hold special church services or prayer meetings. People who personally experienced the events in 2001 or lost loved ones in them, may lay flowers or visit memorials.
Publiclife
Patriot Day is not a federal holiday and schools and businesses do not close. Public transit systems run on their regular schedules. Some people and organizations may take some time out to hold prayers for the victims of the attacks, but these do not usually affect public life for more than a few minutes.
Background
On September 11, 2001, four planes were hijacked. The hijackers then deliberately flew three of the planes into two important buildings, the Pentagon in Washington DC and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York. The fourth crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The loss of life and damage that these hijackings caused form the biggest act of terrorism ever on United States soil. Nearly 3000 people died in the attacks and the economic impact was immense.
The attacks have greatly increased attention to national security in the United States. This has had huge implications for United States national and international politics. This is particularly true for the relationships between the United States and Islamic countries in the Middle East.
Symbols
The most potent symbol of the events that happened on September 11, 2001 are pictures and videos of planes flying into buildings, of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center engulfed in smoke and later collapsing and of people falling from buildings. Pictures taken of damaged buildings and relatives looking for loved ones in the days and weeks after the attacks are also often shown. The flag of the United States is often displayed around images of the events on September 11, 2001. This is to remind Americans that their country remained strong in the face of massive terrorist attacks.
Patriot Day should not be confused with Patriot‘s Day, also known as Patriots Day, which commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775, which were two of the earliest battles in the American Revolutionary War
Hey CV and friends, (From Sturgis With Love)
I had the girls at a local bar scan this napkin to send to all of your rockers at CV and to all of the cool ass readers of the best mag in the northwest. It has the left over stain from my jack and coke on it. This one I drank for all of you.
This has got to be the best run that we have ever been on.
All of the bands have been awesome, the scenery has been great and we have seen some rockin’ ass bikes and some that were just very unique creations.
I have attached some photos for the mag hope that you can share all of them with the world. I’m not sure if you can use all of them but I’m sure the readers will enjoy them. We should be back after the first after visiting some friends In Cali. Love Jen & Ron
I have a clunking noise in my steering column - every time I'm driving and hit even the smallest bump my column shakes and literally clunks - like it's going to break loose - any ideas on what to check? In case it matters, it's a 1996 dodge RAM 4x4.
A clunk in the steering column: The first thing that came to mind was GM, and they have updated their intermediate shaft to correct this problem. The intermediate shaft is the shaft that goes between the upper steering column and the steering box. I checked, and there is a tech bulletin about this problem you may want to check Chrysler TSB #19-01-96. I must say, first check the basics: make sure the connectors in the column are tight and check for loose steering components. If you are not familiar with these pieces, have a professional check them – bring it in to Save on Tires!
My door ajar light will not turn off - it seems that when it rains or snows my door ajar light will pop on and will not turn off no matter how many times I slam the door shut. The biggest problem is that when the door ajar light is on, the interior light will not turn off, which means I have to pull the fuse, which also controls the automatic windows. I drive a 1998 Ford Ranger XLT.
This is a common problem with Ford trucks. The switch is in the latch assembly. For a long time, I was removing door panels and replacing the switch; it is easy enough, but requires good dexterity. Something another tech taught me is to get a good quality spray lube penetrant and spray liberally through the latch opening in the door and then to close the door several times.
I have a chirping noise coming from the fan belt on my 2001 Ford Ranger (auto 4.0L). I put some belt conditioner on it, and the sound stopped, but after several minutes it started making an even louder squeaking noise, which gets louder when I accelerate. The belt looks like it's in good condition, at least to me.
Belt noise can be a little tough at times. First, check the belt tension to see if the belts have an automatic tensioner (somewhere on the body of the tensioner is an arrow to indicate correct tension). If it is out of this range, replace the belt. If the tension is manual adjustment, they make a gauge to test it. If the belts are in good condition, next do a visual check of belt alignment to see if all pulleys look straight with one another. See if any belt is running at inner or outer edge of any pulleys - that would be an indication of an alignment issue. I would say the most common cause of belt misalignment is the tensioner. Also check for foreign material on the belt (coolant is the most common), check the water pump, as it has a weep hole to show when the water pump is failing. If foreign material gets on belt, there is very little you can do but replace it. If there are belt alignment issues, sometimes you can shim the affected device into alignment.

heavily influenced from ‗80s punk bands circulating the Northwest music scene, and national touring punk bands such as Circle Jerks, Youth Brigade, and even Sex Pistols. The band‘s live sound has been compared to CRASS, Dead Kennedys, Ramones, X-Ray Spex, and Vice Squad.
How long have you been playing music?
Being one of those always-on-the-move people, and a foot tapper throughout school, I took my first drum lessons when I was 15. My friend‘s brother was punk drummer, Bob Bulgrien, who played in a local band, ‗AMQA‘ and later, ‗Seaweed‘. I‘d go to his house after school. He taught me how to let each limb play separately, and basic rock beats, which are the foundation of my drumming. Over the years, I picked up the bass, and a couple of years ago, I started playing guitar.
Who have you played with prior?
When I was a teen I jammed with a few friends and bands, but never got into a gigging band. I did get onstage when I was around sixteen. I played drums for the all-girl-band, ‗Frightwig‘ the day they toured through the all-age punk club, ‗Community World Theatre‘, where I worked. Before the show, we talked and I told them I played drums. Then during their set, they called me to play a song with them. My friends found me, picked me up, and surfed me to the front of the stage. My heart was pounding, but I played steadily and enjoyed every second of it.
How did you first get together with the guys from the band?
Forming Klondike Kate! was pretty organic. I met guitarist, Jeff Millar, at a house party in early 2010. He was playing Timbales‘, Latin drums, for a local punk ‗Americana‘ band. He said hi to me after the set. I told him I wanted to start a band and play drums. He said he wanted to play guitar. We hit it off instantly and started texting and sharing influences.
Within weeks, we were writing songs and jamming in my backyard converted -chicken shed. We played on stage as a two-piece for a while, and then a summer later, we met Jose Sanchez after a show. He wanted to play bass for the band. Quickly, he learned all of our tunes. But this year, he had other priorities, and we lost him. We played with fill-in musicians for a while. But we were getting tired of revolving bass players, so this summer, we asked our good friend, Killiam Lord, who was also a fan, to pick up the bass. Having only keyboard experience, he‘s had to learn some bass and stage performance skills fast. But, it‘s worth working with him since he has the work ethics to be successful - such as listening, learning, communicating, and showing up to band practice.
How would you describe your musical style?
We play stripped down three-chord punk rock, influenced by punk bands from the early ‗80s. Some compare us to ‗CRASS‘ and ‗Vice Squad‘. Some have compared us to ‗X-Ray Spex‘ and some of our early songs to the ‗Ramones‘. Over the last couple of years, we‘ve gotten a little faster and a bit more aggressive. Everyone in the band sings, but I do the bulk of it, which has earned me the title of the front woman who sings and drums. We‘ve put out a couple albums last year and earlier this year, recorded in studio and house settings, that were a bit slower and cleaner than our live sound – and got us booked with a lot of indie type bands - so now we‘re releasing some live recordings that better represent our true sound. We‘re writing new material with Kiliam right now, and will record that this winter.
What do you hope to accomplish with your music?
Playing music is my release of pent up energy, and an art form that I have the most fun doing. I‘ve written for a living most of my life. I was a journalist for a while after college, and even wrote a couple YA teen books, but interviews and book tours turned out to be more like work than fun. Playing rock and roll is instantly rewarding. I love punk rock, the lifestyle, meeting people, and listening to other bands play. We hope to tour the USA next year, and venture out to other countries, as well. What do you want people to remember you by when you hang ‗em up?
People like our on-stage energy. A lot of people tell me I look like I‘m having a lot of fun out there - which I am. And as a consequence of my playing, I want to inspire more females to play! It‘s hard to get women up front, on stage, especially in harder rock forms like punk and metal.
It was pretty intimidating to break into the man‘s club, when I first started, both during practice and on stage. In my early days with this band, I got a lot of flack. I grew a thick skin pretty quickly. Some guys, and women, felt they had the right to make lewd comments or butt slap, even grab me. I learned to stand my ground. I‘ve caught people‘s hand mid gesture and let them know how I felt about it. I‘ve also met some competitive men, as well . I remember one drummer from a metal band who said after one of my shows, ―Not bad drumming … for a girl.‖
I replied, ―What did you say?‖
He repeated himself, and I said, ―Not bad drumming for a guy or a girl.‖ He smiled and high-fived me. That‘s how I handle it. But, I don‘t get much flack, now-a-days. People show me a lot of respect. I jam with other musicians every time I get a chance, and they know me as a person and musician.
What, if any, message do you want to convey with your music?
In our music we write songs about gender equality like in ‗Wonder Woman‘ and ‗Poison Ideas‘, or our reflections on politics like in ‗Freedom‘ and ‗Anarchy‘. Some of our songs are written about modern society like ―Facebook Junkie‖ and ―Zombie‘which is about the overmedicating of America.
Where is the craziest place you‘ve played?
Once we got booked on a rock and roll bill at a local club. Mixed bills are cool, but I don‘t think the promoters did their homework by listening to the band. The house was packed. We started playing, and though the crowd started getting into it, the promoters didn‘t. We were told after ten minutes to end the set. So, we did, and moved our gear to just outside of the front door of the club. Sitting on our amps, people started coming out the door to talk to us, asking for Cds and merchandise. We met a lot of cool people that night, and sold a lot of merch just right outside the doors of the club.
Where is the coolest play you‘ve played?
We have played a lot of great shows in the Northwest, with a lot of great bands, in a lot of cool venues. I like venues of all sizes. We‘ve learned to work large and small stages. But one of my favorite shows was played this summer, on a stage built in the hot California desert. We played at a Pyrate Punx festival called ‗Libertatia‘.
The first day we got there the weather got hot; around 108 degrees - but I‘d been warned - and I drank plenty of water. It was on the second day that we cooked – and it was that day we were to play. I was told it reached 120 degrees that day. It was everything I could do to survive it, staying still, sitting under a tree and drinking water. I waited and waited - and then the sun set and the heat dropped. We got on stage, and coming from somewhere deep inside us, our energy exploded and we cut loose! It was phenomenal! We played a great set that day. The crowd really dug it. We‘re still hearing talk of it throughout this summer.
Who are the best fans?
The best fans are ones that react to the music, smiling, nodding, or moshing in the pit, and afterwards, letting us know they liked the show. I love talking to fans. I also love to exchange Facebooks or emails to keep communicating.
Our Facebook band profile is is ‗Klondike Kate‘ and our website address is: www.skyclyde.com/KlondikeKate.html. We also have a ReverbNation site where anyone can listen to us. Much of our music can be downloaded there for free.

The AC/DC Tribute bike classically titled "Back inBlack" was a three month job, start to finish. It goes without saying that the customer who commissioned it is a massive AC/DC fanatic, and, as it turned out, the band proved to be a superb theme around which to build a bike for such a rock music buff and you can be assured that when he saw it for the first time he had to quickly find a chair to sit down in before he fell down.

Looking towardsthefuture: 10 Things Your Carwill have by2020
Warnings Galore
Your car won't drive itself but its technology will help make you a safer driver. For example, current collision-mitigation systems use radar to sense when you're getting too close, going too fast, and give you a visual and auditory warning. They then either "pre-charge" your brakes to give them more power when you step on the brake pedal or like some systems from Hyundai, Lexus and Mercedes tighten your seat belts and automatically apply the brakes.
Eyes All Around
Rearview cameras are likely to become standard equipment, thanks to a proposal by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that would require all light passenger vehicles to have the technology by 2014. The additional cost by the deadline will likely be $50 or less for vehicles equipped with displays (such as a navigation screen) and about $150 for those without one. By 2020, however, the cost will be negligible.
Cross-path cameras, like those from Ford, Chrysler and BMW, show a 180-degree view from the back or front of your vehicle and alert you if another car is approaching as you back up or pull out of a blind drive.
PedestrianDetection andNight Vision
A pedestrian-detection system, such as the one on Volvo's S60, brings the car to a full stop if it detects a pedestrian in your path. NOTE: if you're going faster than 22 miles per hour, the vehicle won't be able to stop fast enough to avoid hitting the pedestrian. (The automakers‘ City Safety feature works the same way for a car that stops short in front of you.) Night-vision systems, like the ones BMW and Mercedes are offering on their top-of-the-line vehicles, detect infrared light or amplify available light to help you see a person who wanders into your intended path but is out of range of your headlights.
Easy Cruising
Adaptive cruise control uses radar to help you keep a safe distance from the car in front as you cruise at highway speeds so that you don't have to constantly hit the brakes and reset your cruising speed.
Currently, it's optional on BMW's cars and on Audi's A4; it's available on mainstream cars like the Ford Taurus too. By 2020, it will be a nearly standard feature on all top-of-the-line vehicles. It will likely evolve to work at low speeds and help you avoid collisions in stop-and-go traffic, much like Volvo's City Safe feature.
Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications
Wouldn't it be nice if cars could talk to each other in order to avoid accidents?
In the future, they will. Ford is currently engineering an intelligent vehicle system that uses advanced Wi-Fi technology; it transmits your vehicle's location and recognizes other vehicles surrounding you. The system will warn you of an oncoming car when you'd like to pass a vehicle on a country road, or alert you to a car about to blow through a red light, or tell you when a vehicle several cars ahead has stopped short. This technology will be available as an option by the end of the decade, although it'll be much longer before it's standard.
ABetter Wayto Connect
Finding your way, finding your music and finding your friends will continue to get easier. Bluetooth will be standard at every level, and pairing your phone with the hands-free system will be much less complicated. A voice prompt will be all you'll need to make a call or change the song. Likewise, widely standard in-car communications systems, such as Ford's Sync, will read incoming text messages. If you have a built-in navigation system, you'll easily be able to speak destinations or ask the system to find a stop along your route.
Application Central
In-car Wi-Fi is available now in some cars for a few hundred dollars, plus a monthly subscription fee, and widespread rollout is imminent. That means surfing the Web on the way to work will probably be par for the course by 2020. And despite government concerns about distracted driving, it's a good bet that apps for Pandora radio, Facebook and Twitter will soon be standard fare in your infotainment system.
The systems will rely on voice commands. GM has already started testing audio Facebook updates through its revamped OnStar communications link. Toyota's Entune system, previewed at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, also responds to voice commands and can use the driver's smart phone to bring apps such as OpenTable, MovieTickets.com and Bing to the dashboard.
Fuel-Sipper Technology
President Obama's latest fuel-economy proposal calls for an industry-wide average of up to 62 miles per gallon by 2025, so look for automakers to embrace fuel savings wherever they can.
To get to the 62 mpg mark, experts estimate it will require widespread electrification, adding up to $10,000 to the cost of a new vehicle. Regenerative brakes, which recharge the battery when you step on the brake pedal, will be standard equipment for gasengine as well as hybrid vehicles.
A stop/start feature, similar to that on today's hybrids, will become standard for gas-engine vehicles, improving fuel economy by up to 10%. When your vehicle is stopped, such as at a light or in heavy traffic, the system turns off the engine and restarts it when you take your foot off the brake. NOTE: I‘ve seen this on some hybrids, it‘s just weird…
Advanced Engines
Hybrids will become a much bigger percentage of cars sold, as will "mild" hybrids, such as Buick's LaCrosse with eAssist, which uses a small lithium ion battery to power a stop/start system and regenerative brakes. The remaining gas-engine models will rely on turbocharging and direct-injection.
Engine size will be a factor, as well. Ford's newest EcoBoost engine is a turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder with direct injection that will offer up to 20% better fuel economy than a traditional four-cylinder with the same amount of power. You'll also see transmissions with more gears, which will help improve fuel economy by up to 6%. Eight speeds is the new six.
Exotic Materials
Making cars lighter is one way that automakers can meet higher mileage standards. So instead of high-strength steel and aluminum, carmakers are looking at carbon fiber, the strong, durable and ultra-light material found in tennis rackets, bicycles and even airplanes.
Lightweight carbon fiber pieces will be featured on many upscale vehicles (like BMW's forthcoming line of electric cars) which will hit the road in 2013. Although manufacturing the material is costly now, prices will come down as advances in manufacturing are made. Using carbon fiber to reduce weight could improve fuel economy by 7%.
