our remarkable Coachella Valley women will be honored for their extraordinary community leadership, public service and visionary entrepreneurship on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014 at Women Leaders Forum of the Coachella Valley’s 2nd Annual “Women Who Rule!” Awards Luncheon and Scholarship Fundraiser, a spectacular valley-wide tribute honoring local women making a difference in our community.

The 11AM event at the Agua Caliente Resort Spa, 32250 Bob Hope Dr, will be emceed by KESQTV’s Karen Devine and CBS Local 2’s Brooke Beare -- and will kick off with an elegant champagne reception and silent auction followed by a noon awards program, live auction and ‘healthy” luncheon, sponsored by Desert Regional Medical Center. The Title Sponsors of the event are Desert Regional Medical Center and the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. Proceeds of the live auction and a match of up to $50,000 with Pathways to Success, a division of the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership, will go directly towards college scholarships for members of WLF’s Young Women Leaders Mentoring Program.

This year’s outstanding “Women Who Rule”: Donna MacMillan, philanthropist, “Mary T. Roche Community Leadership Award.” Renowned throughout the Coachella Valley and beyond for her big heart and tremendous philanthropy, MacMillan has donated millions of dollars over the years to local nonprofits and organizations in need, including Eisenhower Medical Center, the College of the Desert, the McCallum Theatre, the Palm Springs International Film Festival, the Palm Springs Art Museum and the newly established Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert. Last year, MacMillan joined WLF supporter Helene Galen in funding much needed college scholarships for members of WLF’s “Young Women Leaders Mentoring Program.”

Kathy Greco, CEO of Desert Healthcare District, “Jackie Lee Houston Heart of Gold Award.” As CEO of Desert Healthcare District, Greco led the charge to provide $5 million in funding for the new UCR Medical Center Residency Program at Desert Regional Medical Center. In addition, she worked to fund over $900,000 to place the Alliance for a Healthier Generation Program, in partnership with the Clinton Health Matters Initiative, in every school in the Coachella Valley -- touching 71,000 students in 32 schools throughout the desert’s three school districts. Greco also launched a new food insecurity initiative to ensure access to healthy food for the underserved, including lowincome children and seniors. The program provides over a million pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables to food distribution sources in the Coachella Valley.

Joan Boiko, Communications Manager, Palm Springs Unified School District, inaugural “Helene

Galen Excellence in Education Award.” When it comes to communicating the achievements and accolades of Palm Springs Unified School District, no one does it better than Joan Boiko. A longtime supporter of WLF, Boiko keeps in constant contact with every high school counselor in PSUSD, making sure that students learn about the benefits of joining WLF’s Young Women Leaders Mentoring and Scholarship Program. Boiko, whose two daughters are graduates of the program and received scholarships, manages the district’s newsletter and has been deeply involved in the success of the Digicom Student Film Festival, the Pinnacle Fund Foundation and promoting the new Helene Galen Performing Arts Center at Rancho Mirage High School. In addition, Boiko uses her radio show “You Learn Something New Every Day” on 1450 a.m. KPTR progressive talk to discuss issues in education and the mission of WLF. She is also the past president and a founding member of Soroptimist of Palm Springs and has raised thousands of dollars over the years supporting women and girls in the Coachella Valley.

Susan Stein, Creative Director/Producer, Fashion Week El Paseo, Fashion Editor of Palm Springs Life Magazine, “WLF Visionary Award.”

When it comes to creative vision with a fashionable twist, no one in the Coachella Valley compares with Susan Stein, the long-time fashion editor of Palm Springs Life Magazine and Creative Director/ Producer of Fashion Week El Paseo. Stein’s singular vision has propelled Fashion Week into a major special event and tourism booster that women leaders from the Coachella Valley and beyond flock to attend. A long-time supporter of WLF, Stein partners every year with Saks 5th Avenue to present WLF’s signature fall kick off “Fashion Night Out” in September. She has also been a mentor to many young women interested in careers in the

fashion industry.

In addition to honoring these four remarkable women who rule, WLF will proudly present its inaugural “Super Man Award” to long- time supporter and champion of education, Mr. Jim Houston. A Palm Springs resident for more than 30 years, last year Houston underwrote WLF’s “Jackie Lee Houston Merit Scholarship,” which is distributed every May to a deserving young woman leader seeking higher education. Over the years, Houston’s generosity to WLF has been unmatched.

“Donna MacMillan, Kathy Greco, Joan Boiko and Susan Stein serve as tremendous role models and inspirations to the accomplished members of Women Leaders Forum and the young women we mentor,” said WLF President Amy Blaisdell.

“We are incredibly thrilled to pay tribute to these four fabulous women while raising much needed funds for our young women leaders seeking higher education. I encourage every woman leader in the Coachella Valley to join WLF on Jan. 31 as we honor these extraordinary women who rule -- along with our very own “super man,” the wonderful Jim Houston. Founded in 2001 by Indian Wells Council member, Mary T. Roche, the mission of WLF is to empower and develop women leaders of all ages and backgrounds. Over the past 12 years, WLF has raised more than $300,000 in college scholarship funds for members enrolled in its Young Women Leaders Mentoring Program.

Ticket prices are $65 for members and $85 for non-members. This year WLF and its Young Women Leaders have partnered with FIND Food Bank of the Coachella Valley to help feed the hungry. Amy Blaisdell Promoting Palm Springs and Helping CV Female Youth

P

alm Springs has long been a popular vacation destination. And now with the onset of stunning downtown revitalization, Palm Springs’ star is rising even higher. Amy Blaisdell not only helps promote all the best in Palm Spring, but is doing it with a community drive to also help local female youth become rising stars as well through Women’s Leaders Forum of the Coachella Valley and their Young Women Leaders Mentoring Program.

Amy Blaisdell has a love for Palm Springs.

She grew up in nearby Rancho Mirage, and attended valley schools. Blaisdell moved forward with her education receiving a Bachelors of Arts in Communication from Saint Mary’s College of California and a Masters in Broadcast Journalism from San Francisco University.

Blaisdell entered the world of broadcast journalism as a news producer in Palm Springs at KMIR TV. She moved on to become a producer at the NBC affiliate in San Francisco. She came back to the desert and opened City News Service, a news wire that serves Southern California. She covered the Coachella Valley for them reporting on a wide range of topics including everything from local government to healthcare and arts and entertainment.

Her work at City News Service led her to her position at the City of Palm Springs, where she now serves as their Communications Director. Blaisdell is the official spokesperson for the city of Palm Springs and handles all media inquiries about upcoming city events, operations and policies of the local government and city leaders. She also is in charge of the city’s news releases, website and their government access television station where they broadcast all of their city council and commission meetings. In an extension of her abilities, she manages different local marketing campaigns and initiatives for the city of Palm Springs such as the Festival of Lights Parade, the Mayor’s Race and Wellness Festival, which is in partnership with the Clinton Health Matters Initiative, just to name a few.

Besides promoting Palm Springs, Blaisdell is the President of the Women Leaders Forum of the Coachella Valley. WLF focuses on empowering and developing women leaders of all ages and backgrounds.

When she finds any down time she enjoys spending time with her 9 year old son Jake and is also an avid Tennis player.

As a single mom she deems herself lucky to have supportive co-workers and city manager which help to give her balance.

She feels deeply about giving back to the community and is on the Board of Directors of FIND Food Bank, “The cause is close to

my heart,” said Blaisdell.

She is excited to promote this year’s 2nd Annual WLF event, Women Who Rule!

Awards Luncheon and Silent Auction that takes place on Friday, January 31st at the Aqua Caliente Casino Resort and Spa at 11am. The event will be hosted by KESQ TV’s Karen Devine and CBS Local 2’s Brooke Beare.

WLF will be honoring 4 phenomenal women; local philanthropist Donna MacMillan, Kathy Greco; CEO of Desert Healthcare District, Joan Boiko; Communications Manager of Palm Springs Unified School District and Susan Stein; Creative Producer of Fashion Week El Paseo and Fashion Editor of Palm Springs Life Magazine.

The event will also present its inaugural “Superman Award” to Jim Houston, who for the past two years has underwritten WLF’s “Jackie Lee Houston Merit Scholarship.” The scholarship awards $10,000 to one student based on merit and fully completing the Young Women Leaders Mentoring Program.

The program involves the young women in public speaking, community service and a range of other life enriching focuses.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the WLF Young Women Leaders Mentoring Program. Last year the organization raised over $100,000 in scholarship and distributed 22 scholarships to the best and brightest of students enrolled in the mentoring program, “It is life changing for them,” said Blaisdell. WLF has over 100 high school students enrolled in the Young Women Leaders Mentoring Program from all valley school districts.

The event promises to be inspiring with well over 300 women leaders from around the valley including the majority of local women CEO’s.

Blaisdell’s goals for the future of WLF is to continue expanding partnerships with different local organizations in an effort to instill in WLF’s Young Women Leaders the importance of giving back. She is also excited about her beloved city of Palm Springs and all of the progressive changes that are happening in the city, including the historic transformation of the former Desert Fashion Plaza and the revitalization of downtown, which will be assisted by the cities recently passed Measure J -- putting millions of dollars back into the capital improvements which will transform the city.

Blaisdell has a passion for Palm Springs and for the work she does with WLF and FIND Food Bank. She is indeed a leader -and working hard to guide Palm Springs and our valley’s young women into a boundless future of success.

ost know Patrick Evans for his work as Chief Meteorologist and host of Eye on the Desert on local CBS affiliate, CBS Local 2. Others know him for his active involvement in local charities or his occasional appearances where he sings songs from the Great American Songbook at various local watering holes like Melvyn’s.

Very quickly, people are learning that there is yet another side to this multitalented personality - Italian sausages.

“I have a love affair with food, particularly the Italian food I grew up with,” says Patrick ‘Evans’ Iachetta while seated at the bar of the old Buddy Greco’s Restaurant (now home to ShareKitchen) - the home of Patrick’s latest endeavor, Fulvio’s Homemade Italian Sausages.

Fulvio’s Homemade Italian Sausage pays homage to Patrick’s father, Fulvio “Tony” Iachetta who passed away last year. Before Fulvio’s passing, Patrick began working with Angela Janus, Executive Director of ShareKitchen at bringing his family’s recipes to market. Made with select cuts of fresh pork and generous portions of fennel seed that are not found in most sausage products on the market today, Fulvio’s began hitting the shelves of local stores and restaurants over the last month.

“Fennel is what sets these Italian sausages apart. The distinctive crunch and anise flavor are what makes these sausages ITALIAN!” proclaims Evans. “We crafted these sausages from the same recipe my grandfather passed down to my dad, who then passed it on to me. Many a Saturday was spent at the family’s kitchen table grinding pork, seasoning the meat properly before the delicate task of stuffing these sausages.”

To Patrick, Fulvio’s Homemade Italian Sausage is more than food - it is a statement of love toward his father and family. “My family brought with them from Italy a rich tradition of great Italian cuisine. he Learning Tree Center Elementary School of Palm Desert is proud to announce that they have fully implemented the Support and Education for Local Music and Arts program into their after school curriculum. This Music & Arts program has provided two new after school art classes, a school-wide mural going up, and a fundraiser planned for February 7th.

This fundraiser will subsidize the cost of the materials needed to run the program.

Sounds good, sounds ideal, and sounds totally unrealistic. The only way you eliminate the elements from the game is to not play it.

If the game is played in warm weather cities, but outside, you have to deal with sun, glare, perhaps heat, players wearing out from losing fluids, passes being dropped because of bad shadows on the field, there could be wind that is unpredictable.

If the game is played inside, teams have to deal with turf and the different speed associated with that, crowd noise, and the fact that FOOTBALL WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE PLAYED INSIDE EVER… (my personal bias aside).

The point is, football is a game of elements and adverse conditions by nature, and housing the championship in a stadium where each team must face adverse conditions and modify their game accordingly will be a true test of which TEAM is superior. Which TEAM overcomes the conditions and excels. And isn’t that the definition of winning a championship? To be the last TEAM standing after all others fall?

If Peyton Manning loses this game it will not be because of the weather, it will be because the Seahawks pass rush brutalized him for 60 minutes. And that would be the case in New York or Miami.

So even when it’s cold outside, the definition of a champion is the team who can turn the heat up hot enough to best the competition. Period.

Sure It’s Cold, But Champs Know How to Turn Up The Heat

’m in New York, well, technically New Jersey, the site of Super Bowl XLVIII. As you read this, you’ll likely be well acquainted with the forecast for the NFL’s championship game, but if you’ve been living under a rock, allow me to offer a summation of the reports: Stick your head in a freezer, while standing in a bucket of ice, then have a buddy throw Rocky Road ice cream in your face. While you enjoy the 80-degree temperatures of the Coachella Valley, we’re braving all sorts of elements in the New York, New Jersey area. And by we, I mean the media contingent covering the Super Bowl.

And “we”, are not a tough bunch, I’m afraid.

No, most media is used to covering the nation’s largest sporting event in warm, Coachella Valley-like temperatures. Some are down-right pissed off the NFL chose to have the Super Bowl in a cold weather city, thus redirecting their yearly all-expense paid trip to palm trees and out of the likes of Chicago or Indy or Minneapolis or Boston cold.

But don’t listen to the media. They won’t be taking a snap, taking a hit or even taking a moment to consider this game is about winning the NFL Championship, not winning an NFL beauty contest.

As Denver head coach John Fox said early in Super Bowl week, “In order to be a championship football team, we have to be weather proof.” He’s absolutely right.

Ladies and gentlemen, football is not a game built in tropical climates that’s been translated to the Frozen Tundra. The game of football was built in adverse conditions with Gale Sayers carving a Hall-Of-Fame career through 2 feet of mud, with Dick Butkus proving his toughness by beating tough conditions, by the Galloping Ghost’s irreverent runs through rough terrain.

Without those greats (and the many more like them) braving the elements and forging legends, the NFL may not have cemented its place in our culture. But they did, so it has.

Super Bowl winning quarterback and a guy who had his greatest success playing in a dome, Kurt Warner said he’s against a cold weather Super Bowl because he doesn’t want the elements to impact the game,

eyton Manning’s Denver Broncos and Richard Sherman’s Seattle Seahawks were the NFL’s best all season, so it’s fitting that they’ll meet in the Super Bowl.

Nobody scored as many points or gained as many yards as the Broncos.

Nobody allowed as few points or gave up as few yards as the Seahawks.

What a way to finish the season. When the AFC champion Broncos (15-3) play the NFC champion Seahawks (15-3) on Feb. 2 at what could be a chilly MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., it will be the first Super Bowl since 1991 where the league’s highest-scoring team in the regular season against the team that was scored on the least.

It’s also only the second time in the last 20 Super Bowls that the No.1 seed in each conference reached the NFL championship game.

Peyton Manning, the 37-year-old quarterback who is the only four-time NFL MVP. He established marks by throwing for 55 touchdowns and 5,477 yards, helping Denver lead the league with 37.9 points and 457.3 yards per game. Manning, as a pitchman, is seemingly everywhere too, seen Sunday after Sunday during TV commercials. He could be seen selling cars during breaks in the broadcast of the NFC title game. Expect even more face time now.

Manning’s story, certain to be repeated a million times in the coming days, includes his comeback from a series of surgical procedures to his neck, attempts to cure problems that led him to sit out the entire 2011 season. That also led the Indianapolis Colts to send him packing despite two Super Bowl appearances with that club, including a title in 2007.

“It’s certainly well-documented what my journey the past 2½ years has been,” said Manning, who could become the first starting QB to lead two franchises to titles, “but this team’s overcome a lot of obstacles this year.”

None more serious than coach John Fox’s absence for about a month because of a heart operation. Other issues included the star linebacker Von Miller’s drug-testing suspension and season-ending knee injury, and the losses of a handful of other starters on defense.

“Being in my 16th season, going to my third Super Bowl — I know how hard it is to get there,” Manning said.

He threw for 400 yards and two touchdowns in a 26-16 victory over Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in the AFC championship game Sunday. Manning’s offense scored on six consecutive possessions, accounted for more than 500 yards, had zero turnovers and zero sacks.

In contrast, Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson, provides a real contrast as he seeks his — and the Seahawks’ — first Super Bowl trophy.

Wilson is 6 inches shorter, 12 years younger, a skilled scrambler in only his second pro season after slipping to the third round of the draft; he’s a guy who had to transfer colleges to get playing time and thought about pursuing a baseball career instead.

Other members of the Seahawks getting the chance to introduce themselves to a wide audience include rugged running back Marshawn Lynch — fans tossed packs of his favorite candy, Skittles, onto the field after a 40yard TD run in the third quarter — and Carroll, a rah-rah sort who was a title-winning college coach at Southern California.

And maybe, just maybe, some of Manning’s less-heralded defensive teammates — the ones who clamped down on New England’s running game Sunday and limited Brady much of the afternoon — will get their chance to shine, too.

Seattle’s defense, led by Sherman, allowed an average of 14.4 points and 273.6 yards, and topped the NFL in takeaways.

On Sunday, the Seahawks forced three turnovers in the fourth quarter alone, including a victory-sealing interception by Malcolm Smith after Sherman stretched his left hand to tip Colin Kaepernick’s pass away from receiver Michael Crabtree in the end zone.

Seattle’s only other trip to the big game ended with a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2006. Denver will be playing in its seventh Super Bowl and eyeing a third title, to go with those from 1998 and 1999, when current executive John Elway was the QB. In addition to Elway, Manning can match his younger brother Eli with a second Super Bowl crown. Eli, a spectator on Sunday in Denver, won two trophies with the New York Giants, whose stadium hosts this year’s Super Bowl, the first to be played outdoors at a cold-weather site.

HITS Provides Equestrian Fun in the CV

B

eyond the Coachella Valley sports staples of Golf and Tennis is another exciting world of sports. It is the elegant and highly skilled art of horse show jumping. And now HITS in Thermal, a leader in horse show jumping, is inviting spectators to come and be a part of this incredible sport.

Horse show jumping started in the 19th century. It came into inception as a necessity two centuries earlier after the Enclosed Act of Britain was put in place. The Act was enacted so the higher classes could protect their property from the public by installing fences. However, the fox hunters didn’t see it as a deterrent but rather as a challenge.

Instead of going around these new obstacles they decided to just jump them with their horses instead, keeping their pursuit of the sport of fox hunting intact. It was from this futile barring of land that the sport of horse jumping was born.

The sport took on a more civilized status as cavalry schools became prevalent in the 19th century in Austria, Italy and France.

The first international equestrian show featuring horse jumping leaped onto the scene in 1907 in Britain. Later in 1912, horse jumping became an Olympic sport.

Thomas Struzzieri, owner of HITS (Horse Shows In The Sun) produced his first horse show in 1982 in Gainesville Florida.

Struzzieri has been in the Coachella Valley producing shows for 23 years. He had his venue in Indio between the Eldorado and Empire Polo grounds for a majority of the time before acquiring the current HITS venue in Thermal after selling his former to Golden Voice. Besides Thermal, HITS has equestrian venues in Tucson Arizona, Ocala Florida, Culpeper Virginia and at their headquarters in Saugerties NewYork.

The goal of HITS is to produce hunter/ jumping horse shows with exceptional first class amenities and the best in professional staff. They also are available for competitive outlets for riders on varied levels of age and ability.

HITS in Thermal sits on an expansive 300 plus acres with 15 permanent barns housing 1,500 stalls, and an added 5,000 temporary stalls. In all the property accommodates over 3,000 horses during their 8 week season stretching from late January to midMarch.

The property is expertly fitted with everything for superior competition and hosts countries from around the world including the US, Canada, Mexico and many more during their desert season. The venue includes a 24/7 veterinary clinic, a one room school house for the traveling youth competitors, restaurant and lounge and outdoor shopping area which are open to the public plus and an impressive VIP section. The VIP area offers tables for purchase by sponsors desiring to offer special accommodations and is available to

HITS is eager to invite the local population to come and enjoy their awesome venue and experience the grace and beauty of the sport of horse show jumping. “We need to engage the local community,” said onsite PR representative Elizabeth Grosse.

The shows are varied with Jumper, Hunters and Equitation classes. The classes may seem a bit confusing to those not understanding the sport but are quick to decipher. To make it simple, Jumpers are the most athletic of the group, judged on faults and time. The Hunter class judges the horse, more specified on manners and course jumping accuracy, while the Equitation is reserved for the riders riding the Hunters as they are judged by their own precision.

More than 15 to 20 judges are flown in from around the world to judge the events. It is a very intricate sport to say the least, but it all adds up to a stunning visual of seeing these massive mammals maneuver with ease.

The public is encouraged to come and visit HITS during their season. It is free to come during the week and visitors can roam freely around the park and gaze in wonderment of the spectacular horses (golf carts are available for rent). Sundays are the Grand Prix events and require a reasonable $5 entrance fee. Their big televised million dollar purse Grand Prix event takes place on March 16th where the best horses from around the world will compete. “It will be pretty spectacular,” said Lindsay Wandon, HITS PR representative.

Tribal Seeds - Award Winning Reggae

T

he Date Shed in Indio is bringing award winning, rocking, roots reggae to the Coachella Valley.

Tribal Seeds, the hugely followed, San Diego based band, will perform at the infamous venue mere weeks before the release of their third and newest album, Representing.

The band’s vocalist, keyboardist and producer, Tony-Ray, hints that this may be their best compilation to date. “It’s a big step up, as far as production goes...” he shared. “We spent a lot more time on the details and the sounds we wanted to use on this album, more than on any other album before. I don’t want to give too much away, but we’ll definitely be playing songs from the new album. It’s going to be a great show.”

The band, founded by two brothers, Tony-Ray Jacobo and Steven Rene Jacobo (lyrics, vocals, guitar) have been playing throughout Southern California since 2005.

“My brother (Steven) and I grew up with Reggae being played in our house since birth, so we naturally developed a love for it. As we got older and began to understand the message more, and as we were inspired by live shows...there was just no other genre for us to pursue.” The band’s self-titled, debut album, Tribal Seeds, was released in

2008, followed by their second album, The Harvest, in 2009. Both of these were named iTune’s “Best Of” in the Reggae genre. Tribal Seeds won the “Best World Music” title at the San Diego Music Awards in 2008, and The Harvest, debuted at the number 5 spot on the Billboard Reggae Charts. In 2011, the EP, Soundwaves was released and peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Reggae Charts.

Three new singles, “Run The Show”, “Did Wrong” and “Night & Day” are currently available for download.

The band’s dedication to the roots genre, their work ethic and constant touring schedule have much to do with their success in growing their own national and international popularity. Local favorite, Mikey Reyes (Soundcloud.com/themikeyreyes) of the reggae band Soul Opus (www.facebook. com/SoulOpusMusic) shared, “They are definitely a huge inspiration to me and Soul Opus; they are young Reggae musicians on the path to righteousness. They are one of the hardest working Reggae bands out there, and I only see them creating an even bigger and stronger vibe to follow for the masses.”

Throughout the years, the band has experienced personnel changes, but as Tony-Ray explained, “that’s normal with any band. Right now, we have a solid group that is focused on touring and passionate about the music.” The band including the two brothers also includes Carlos Verdugo (drums), Victor Navarro (bass), E.N. Young (keyboards, vocals) and Ryan Gonzo (guitar, vocals). For the two brothers, it’s been a life long partnership that just comes naturally. Tony-Ray credits this to the fact that they have always had “the same goal in mind, the same vision for the sound of the band, and like the same things.”

While the guys are all about the music and rocking the reggae vibe, they are constant encouragers to their listening community to stand up and be heard regarding the wrongs they see in the world, a tradition that echos the genre’s spiritual and political foundations. Their music reaches out to all ages and backgrounds with no specific agenda or target. “We just write music that we love, lyrics that we love...we don’t aim our messages to any specific group. We just play the music that we love.”

The band has an incredible resume of internationally known bands with whom they’ve been honored to share stages with all over the United States, as well as Mexico, Guam and Aruba. That resume includes artists such as the Dave Mathews Band, Jack White, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane’s Addiction, Skrillex, MGMT, Cee Lo Green, Jason Mraz, Matisyahu, Sublime with Rome, Taking Back Sunday, O.A.R., Pretty Lights, Pepper, Collie Buddz, The Wailers, Julian Marley, Stephen Marley, Gregory Isaacs, SOJA, Rebelution and topping that list, the band, Midnight, whom they’ve had the opportunity to work with on a few occasions.

But November provided an especially epic

moment in the band’s musical history when they were invited to open for Steel Pulse. “They have always been our biggest inspirations as far as sound. My brother and I grew up with them, and it was a dream come true to share the stage with them and watch them from sidestage. It was an unreal experience.”

J

esse Hughes comes straight from the heart of the original desert rock music crew. He has been kicking ass and taking names as front man for Eagles of Death Metal since the late nineties along with Josh Homme, founding member of Queens of The Stone Age. The band has toured and recorded with a revolving cast of characters for nearly a decade. EODM is born from the question, “What would happen if you mated The Eagles with Metal”? The answer is powerful guitar driven melodies and deep dirty bass lines, combined with primal drum beats and the incendiary vocal approach delivered by front man Jesse Hughes. His lyrics are laced with comedy akin to an early Bon Scott (AC/ DC). Jesse attacks subject matters that some might consider off-limits and puts them to song. His ease on stage, his relationship with the audience, and his light hearted nature make him an absolute blast to witness. He is known the world over for his highly charged kinetic energy on stage and his interactive performances. His approach to guitar is powerful and emotional....he plays with a lot of heart and soul. Jesse has a gift for taking us far away from the drudgeries of life with his irreverent live performances. How odd that this man of irreverence is an ordained minister of the Universal Life Church (World Headquarters), able to marry the rocker and his girlfriend.... til death do they part. He is a real character out of the pages of desert rock and roll history. His roots here in the desert run deep as does his love for the music scene he was spawned from. He is part of the nucleus of desert rockers that broke out and had something to say when they got there. And for a moment...he is back among us in his native desert land.

On January 17th, I received a call from soundman DJ Ray Phillips asking if I could help publicize a last minute show at Schmidy’s Tavern in Palm Desert. The show was to be out from under the radar, and it would feature Jesse Hughes and his band of Assassins. The Pigeons of Shit Metal was the name on the poster prepared just hours before show time. The lineup featured his sexy sidekick Tuesday Cross on bass. Tuesday is a 23 year old woman with attitude. She delivers solid bass grooves with absolute confidence, and though she is tiny in stature, she isn’t someone to be trifled with. Eden Galindo from the band Sweet Water played guitar. Eden is a talent in his own right, and he delivered a powerful and tight set of rock and roll. Paul Castillo was on drums and he didn’t miss a beat. Dynamically heavy and solid as hell, Paul is brother to Joey Castillo, EODM drummer. Rhythm must run in that family because both brothers have it going on. On stage that night was a Hammond B3.

I had been given the lineup by Ray and there was no mention of a keyboard player. When

I see a HB3 on stage I always get excited because it is a key sound I favor, especially in the realm of hard rock. It was a delightful surprise to see Tony Gafrancesco (Parosella, Butchery Boys) step up to sit in with POSM. I think that was a first time venture and Tony is such a talented guy.

When I arrived I was eventually greeted by a Reverend Jesse dressed in a priest’s coat with that cute little white collar around his neck. Jesse isn’t playing anyone but him.

He is ON all the time and the show is always engaging and uplifting. Within one song he had won the intimate audience over and we were all eating out of the palm of his hand. He performed several songs from his solo records (Boots Electric /Honkey Kong) before being joined by guitarist Dave Catching, his colleague in EODM. It quickly turned into a historic night of desert rock.

The Pigeons of Shit Metal quickly morphed into the Eagles of Death Metal, and Dave is a beautiful player. His white hollow body guitar with pinstripes bore resemblance to a Gretsch. His tone was crystal clean and his leads were tasty and fine. Dave was sporting a red hoodie, and the traditionally hairless man was also wearing a long gray beard. Jesse kept calling him Santa as they playfully teased and challenged each other to bring it...song after song. I couldn’t tell if the beard was real or not. I sort of wish I had given it a tug now.

Dave Catching has played in such bands as The Earthlings & Masters of Reality, both with cult followings, and my earliest memories of him are seeing him with Kyuss back in the early nineties. Since those early days Dave settled into Rancho De La Luna, a well loved and respected house turned recording studio nestled in the wild of the high desert landscape.

There Dave made a home for himself and began working with some legendary bands and musicians turning their music into a new reality. He has worked with producer

Chris Goss on some of the biggest selling rock and roll records of our time as well as playing with Chris in his project Masters of Reality. Chris’s wife, Cynthia once told me that MOR would sell out the Viper Room on a 2 night booking in the middle of the week in just minutes. I have been revisiting their music as of late and it is wonderfully written, arranged and produced. I will never forget seeing Chris Goss with two brothers known as The Flies in Joshua Tree at what was then The Beatnik (now Radio Free Joshua Tree) . One brother played a beautiful upright bass. I can’t remember the song that they performed, but it was a total hit and one Chris had produced. Chris sang that song like nobody’s business. I still get chills when I think of it today. It is crazy how one musician is connected to another, and one story leads you to another, and then another. It IS a small world when it is centered around music. I spoke to Dave briefly and he said he is so busy at RDLL that he really can’t take on another thing at the moment. Between playing in his own music projects and working with friends on their music projects at RDLL, he is slammed.

Eagles of Death Metal has had a revolving

lineup over the years, largely due to the fact that Josh Homme is ultra busy with his primary music project Queens of the Stone Age. QOTSA has been at the top of the hard rock charts for years and their tour schedule is busy year round. Jesse and Josh will join forces with Dave Catching and tour in Australia and New Zealand this February through the beginning of March. There are already enough songs in the hole for a new upcoming EODM record and according to NME, we can expect them to begin tracking sometime after schedules slow down next September. For now, I will find comfort in the 2008 release Heart On. Listening to that record is contagious...it should come with a warning label attached.....”Caution: Listening to this record is addictive”.

This won’t be the last time you read me addressing the fact that QOTSA will be performing near the top of the Saturday night bill at this year’s Coachella Fest(s).

I have been hearing lots in the local news about this year’s CF...but not one word about the fact that a band from Palm Desert is at the top of the lineup. While I realize there is a wealth of musical talent included in each annual CF.....It is because of QOTSA that I finally intend to attend this year’s sold out event. To me...it is long overdue. Some of us music fans in the desert...actually prefer desert rock. Maybe the sun has warped my mind...but, I am absolutely one such music fan. RAWBONE, RA-BON, ROBIN CLEWELL A HISTORIC LOOK INTO A BRAND NEW BAND

B

eing a woman in rock...especially in the desert where male musicians are crazy in a completely unique way..... comes with its own special set of challenges.

I know, because I have been immersed in the desert music scene since the early nineties as a musician, a music store owner, and eventually a music writer. It wasn’t until I opened a small vintage instrument store in the early nineties that I discovered the underground music scene.

I was hearing players like Mario Lalli and cousin Larry, Gary Arce, John Garcia, Arthur Seay, Mike Cancino, Damian Lautiero, Armando Flores, Mike Riley, Mike Desert, Dave Catching, Josh Homme, Alfredo Hernandez, The Huskey’s (Zach & Erica), the list goes on and on. It began a romance with the desert music scene that has only grown with time. I was so inspired back then that I began a music newspaper, Desert Rhythms, determined to shed some light on the music I was hearing. I took a long break from writing as motherhood and life called me away for nearly 15 years. But, I never lost touch with the people who went on to achieve great things with their music careers. Twenty years later, what I rediscovered is a community of world class musicians making music, as they always have done, free from constraints or formulas.

From heavy metal to punk to psychedelic rock, people making music here in the desert don’t just break the rules, they never even read the rule book. The result is music that is truly unique, no matter what the genre, and a tight knit community of musicians that support each other and come together to make that music happen. A whole new flood of live music venues now exist, which is allowing music to flourish and dozens of new music projects are taking wing. A community with strong bonds has fostered a scene that allows original art to flourish. From the ashes of Kyuss, who had an illustrious but short lived career, yet still impacts hard rock all over the world today, came Queens of the Stone Age (Josh Homme), Vista Chino (John Garcia, Brant Bjork), Whiskey and Knives, Brave Black Sea, Hot Beat Pussy Fiend and Rawbone (Alfredo Hernandez), and Eagles of Death Metal (Dave Catching and Jesse Hughes). That one band has inspired a whole new generation of music. Their influence can be experienced in the live sets of Waxy, Lakota,

Truckfighters from Sweden (just to name a few), all bands I follow and try never to miss when they play here. Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) remembers discovering Kyuss record Blues For The Red Sun and buying out the record stores so he could pass out copies to friends and fans, spreading the love for the record and perpetuating the unique sounds of desert rock, which went on to earn the label desert stoner rock. And, don’t let the term “stoner” make you feel you have to be toking bowls to get into the music. That is the beauty of psychedelic rock....it is intoxicating all on it’s own. A beautiful drug you can’t overdose on, though I may need rehab if I am to ever shake it....but, why would I try? Desert rock is my drug of choice and my love for it has only deepened over the decades.

When I first heard Rawbone which features vocalist, songwriter, Robin Clewell, I thought I had discovered desert gold. She was singing about my life. Lyrics I related to completely. Her presentation, her vocal style, her songwriting, as unique and inspired as anything I have ever heard from her male punk rock counterparts. I have thought about the live set I experienced at Schmidy’s Tavern last December 29th a dozen times, analyzing why it stuck with me in such a meaningful way. I felt we had walked through the desert in the same pair of shoes. Shoes you have to take off and shake the sand out of, shoes that leave your feet blistered and aching.

What first drew me in to see Rawbone was my love for drummer Alfredo Hernandez. I am a die-hard fan of a man I consider to be the desert drummer king. He has accomplished so much playing music his way. Alfredo is known for his passion of many forms of original music; Punk, metal, stoner rock, and even country rock. At one time he was touring Europe with eleven different bands. He is as versatile a drummer as you will ever experience. With each project, he brings a different approach, yet his own sound is distinct and organic. He had played with Family Butcher, who I have seen dozens of times, which featured Jon Arnold’s (Whiskey and Knives) Slayer style speed picking, and bassist Kevin Smith (Willful Failure guitarist, my son-in-law, and father of my three beautiful grandsons), and front man John Summers. When FB played a show,

they brought the punkers out in droves and roused them to their core with fast and furious compositions. John Summers would spout out lyrics about his girlfriend whose a slut, or cops eating donuts... He was like the Don Rickles of punk rock. The band was a total kick in the pants to experience. Still, I can’t say I related to the lyrics. They did make me want to jump into the mosh pit and kick some ass. John Summers, the self proclaimed King of the Night, knew how to get an audience riled up and out of control.

What Robin Clewell has created with Rawbone is punk inspired, lyric driven, stripped down sound. It’s Robin Clewell on vocals, Zach Huskey on guitar and Alfredo Hernandez drums, no bass. Robin’s first instrument is bass guitar which she uses to create the core of the tunes. This leaves room to experiment with dynamics.

A little agony, drama, funny, story telling, joking, teasing and wit. RB features Zack’s creative guitar genius. Zach can write and play many types of music. I have heard Zach in his desert doom band Dali’s Llama, his blues chops with Primordial Blues, and he has written concertos, Time Consumptions I & II, for bowed electric bass and electric guitar as well as a 250 page score for guitar and bass symphony, Ahimsa. In RAWBONE, Zach has taken Robin’s riffs and melodies and created a really intense sound, soaring and experimenting....sleazing it up as Zach puts it. It is yet another dimension of the multi-dimensional desert rocker. Zach is like an onion...lots of layers. I doubt we have even come close to the core of it all.

RAWBONE is the first project Robin has fronted. When asked how she feels about it, she answers, “You’re kinda’ naked out there, but naked is fun.”

As a writer, Robin finds inspiration from life experience, pent up anger, the ridiculous ironies of our culture. She infuses her lyrics with humor and sarcasm. This isn’t some chick band. This is a woman who has hung with the bad boys in the desert and knows how to hit back with lyrical content that would raise the brow of even the rawest desert punk. Songs like “Isn’t It Romantic?”, or “My First Time”, which is a sarcastic tale of rape, or “Fuck Trunk”, a revenge fantasy. Touchy subjects? Maybe so.

But, I for one can relate to them and appreciate the fact that Robin doesn’t pull punches, nor is she afraid to delve into subject matter. Isn’t that what punk rock is all about? She finds it an honor to be working with two of the most sought after musicians in the desert.

Robin, Zach, and Alfredo also have another music project, Hot Beat Pussy Fiend. In that project Robin provides supporting vocals. I have yet to see their live set. On Saturday, January 31st, both Rawbone and Hot Beat Pussy Fiend will be playing at Schmidy’s Tavern in Palm Desert. An extra added bonus that night will be DJ Habenero, Alfredo Hernadez’ alter ego.

He will be spinning an eclectic alternative mix, dipping into the past as far back as the early fifties and late forties. DJ Habanero says he creates an atmosphere in the room and then lets the energy determine how far out there he will take things. Alfredo has a lot of irons in the fire these days, as do Robin and Zach. A brand new record deal with V2 Records (a subsidiary of Virgin) with Brave Black Sea, Whiskey and Knives, Hot Beat Pussy Fiend, Rawbone, and Spun Monkey. Zach and Erica Huskey have Dali’s Llama, their desert doom metal band dating back twenty years, Rawbone, Hot Beat Pussy Fiend, and a brand new project is underway, The Hickups. Zach describes this new endeavor as Cow Punk. Zach’s country inspired punk originals will also feature Robin on vocals.

Robin wants to encourage women to find their own voice, and if music is their passion, she encourages them to push forward and create art. Here in the desert, where I used to pursue my own original music, I see lots of women making an impact on the CV music scene. For me, Robin Clewell is blowing a hole in the ozone. She is redefining what is proper and pushing the envelope by taking touchy subject matter and committing it to song. It is defining her as an artist and she has made quite an impact on me as a real fan of desert rock.

There was an immediate connection between Darrell and Tim. The bond was cemented when the duo made RealTime in 2000. Consisting of nine originals and four cover songs, the album was recorded in Scott’s living room in just three days.

It didn’t rocket up the charts, but anyone lucky enough to hear Real Time, realized it was special music. As each man continued to further their solo careers, fans held out hope the duo would carve out time for another collaboration. It took 13 years, but Memories And Moments is finally here.

The album opens with a Tim O’Brien song, “Time To Talk To Joseph.” Anchored by whipcrack banjo and mandolin runs the lyrics sketch out a desperate man’s search for spiritual redemption.

The feel of this album is loose and improvisational, but Scott and O’Brien each provide finely crafted compositions.

Beginning with the title track, Scott’s songs include “It All Comes Down To Love,” “Angel’s Blue Eyes” and “Fiddler Jones.” “…Down To Love” is a shimmery ode to the pursuit of true love…”In the end there’s a feast of milk and cookies, lion and the lamb will be there/Nymphs and virgins all stand in line to greet me, voodoo waits to come my silken hair.”

RANCHO MIRAGE’s FIRST ANNUAL “TOUR OF ARTIST’S HOMES/STUDIOS”

here is so much amazing music in the world that it can feel like there isn’t enough time to discover it all.

Take singer-songwriters Darrell Scott and Tim O’Brien, most people have never heard of them, yet separately and together, they are responsible for a number of mainstream hits.

Darrell Scott was born in Kentucky in 1959 and grew up in Indiana. His father, Wayne Scott, was an aspiring musician and he passed his passion for music on to his son.

After spending his teen years in Southern California, Darrell attended Tufts University.

He briefly lived in Boston and Toronto.

By the early 90s, Scott was an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, having mastered guitar, mandolin, accordion, lap and pedal steel, as well as banjo. He relocated to Nashville to pursue a career in music.

Initially he found work as a session musician.

It wasn’t long before major recording artists were covering Scott’s songs, garnering critical and commercial acclaim.

Garth Brooks, Faith Hill, Brad Paisley, Tim McGraw and the Dixie Chicks all had huge success with Darrell Scott compositions. A collaboration between Scott and singer Sara Evans, “Born To Fly”, shot to number one on the Country charts.

Scott began his prolific recording career in 1997 with his debut, Aloha From Nashville. Seven solo albums followed in quick succession: Family Tree, Theatre Of The Unheard, Live In NC, Invisible Man, Modern Hymns, A Crooked Road and Long Ride Home.

Scott still made time for session work, and he achieved instant Rock and Roll cred outside Nashville when he was invited to join Robert Plant’s Band Of Joy in 2010.

Darrell Scott met Tim O’Brien in a writer’s room in Nashville’s storied Music Row. Born in West Virginia in 1954, O’Brien had travelled the same circuitous path as Scott, playing sessions, as well as writing and recording his own music. Since 1984 he has released 15 solo albums. Tim O’Brien has also toured with Dire Straits’ front man, Mark Knopfler.

Tim’s warm tenors blend in a rich harmony as they yearn for reassurance…”Give me something to believe in, when this world turns dark and cold/Tell me sunlight’s shining somewhere, dreams are bought but never sold.”

The title track blends call and response vocals, spiraling acoustic fills and sharp fiddle runs. The lyrics remind us that our most powerful possessions are our memories and moments.

“Fiddler Jones is the album’s most expansive track, a low key waltz powered by strumming acoustic guitar and sawing fiddle.

The lyrics paint a finely etched portrait of a 19th century musician who has seen it all…

“I’ve fiddled for governors, I’ve fiddled for slaves, I’ve fiddled at birthings, I’ve fiddled on graves/I’ve one thousand memories I’ll never forget, one broken fiddle, not a single regret.”

Tim O’Brien’s songs, “Brother Wind,” “You Don’t Own Me”and “Free Again” are equally impressive. “Brother..” is propelled by sunkissed acoustic riffs, the lyrics weigh the pros and cons of wanderlust. What are the emotional costs of life on the open road?

On “You Don’t Own Me” the narrator tries to break free from a backwoods jezebel.

The instrumentation is a simple combination of banjo, acoustic guitar and mandolin, but these guys are such virtuosos, the song plays out like a bluegrass symphony.

Finally, “Free Again” is lush with multitracked acoustic guitars. The lyrics offer a convincing argument for divesting ourselves of worldly goods….”I was afraid to look inside to see what I might find, it might be worse than cancer maybe I would lose my mind/I get myself distracted, Lord I have found a thousand ways/I used to let them weigh me down, now I let them fall away.”

The song Scott and O’Brien wrote together is the album’s best track. (It’s also Grammy nominated in the newly created category, Best American Roots Song). “”Keep Your Dirty Lights On” is a bluesy ramble. A stinging indictment on the coal industry….”Every time they have elections, they talk about how coal is clean/ Well coal is cheap, but coal’s still black, it ain’t never turning green!.”

Along with their superlative originals, the guys tackle three classics, George Jones’ “Just One More,” Hank Williams’ “Alone And Forsaken” and John Prine’s “Paradise.” On the latter, Prine joins in, with his raspy tenor adding a courtly grace to the proceedings.

The album closes with “On Life’s Other Side.” The melody feels suitably churchy.

Rippling mandolin fills compliment gospel piano. The lyrics reassure us, whatever our transgressions, we are ultimately forgiven… ”We’ll walk with each other, with nothing to hide/ Every sorrow a memory on life’s other side.”

Memories and Moments is a richly nuanced record. Not just a commodity offered up by Nashville pros, but a heartfelt effort from kindred spirits. Hopefully it won’t be another 13 years before we hear from them again.

Tours of Artists homes & studios have existed for many years -- throughout Europe and America.

The Rancho Mirage Tour of Artists Homes was created -- & proposed to the Rancho Mirage Cultural Commission -- this summer by Artistic Advisor to the Cultural Commission, Rebecca Pikus, in collaboration with Angela Valente Romeo and Simeon Den. The initial proposal of this great artistic endeavor was made to Scott Hines, Councilman & former Mayor (who will be having an upcoming Mayoral Campaign). Through his encouragement & enthusiasm for the Arts, Scott arranged for a presentation to be made to the Cultural Commission: Beverlee Greene, Peggy Cravens, Sandra Cooper Woodson, Robert Walker, as well as Randal Bynder, City Manager, & Mayor Richard Kite. From the beginning, the Cultural Commission was very receptive to the idea & concept -- and subsequently gave the Green Light for the Event.

The purpose is to promote the Greater Palm Springs area as a Cultural & Artistic destination -- and more specifically to spotlight the City of Rancho Mirage as a community which supports, encourages & promotes the Arts, embracing all forms of artistic expression. This annual event will attract locals, visitors, tourists & art collectors - both nationally & internationally. It will also acknowledge and honor the resident Rancho Mirage Artists.

The first annual Rancho Mirage Cultural Festival will be held April 10-13, 2014. The Tour of Artists Homes/Studios will be on Saturday, April 12, 2014. The Kick-Off will start at City Hall at 11:00am, with an Introduction by Scott Hines, the Participating Artists, and a short Video presentation of Documentary Interviews of the Artists by Angela Valente Romeo. Maps/ brochures with directions to the Artists’ Homes will be provided. The entire Event is free to the

public. From 12:00 Noon - 5:00pm the Artists Homes will be open. The public will have a rare opportunity to have an insider’s tour, engage the artists in conversations and view their homes & studios; Refreshments will be provided by the host Artists.

Winemakers Dinners about Town

T

his is a good time to catch up on some of the wine and food outings in the area, one we’ve recently enjoyed, and a few to look forward to.

Really had a good time kicking off Morgan’s in the Desert’s 2014 Winemaker Dinners & the Food & Wine Festivals when they hosted the Wines of Iron Horse.

Iron Horse Winery is one of Sonoma County’s most beautiful, small, independent, estate, family owned wineries located in cool, foggy Green Valley, one of California’s smallest wine appellations that lies in the southwestern part of the Russian River Valley.

In the arena of California sparkling wines, Iron Horse stands at the top. Their wines have been served at the White House for the past five consecutive presidential administrations, beginning with the historic Reagan-Gorbachev Summit Meetings and lately at our own Sunnylands where the Obama-Chinese VP Xi Jinping conference was held.

Celebrated Executive Chef, restaurateur, food scientist and author Jimmy Schmidt is at the helm of Morgan’s at the Desert where he wonderfully paired his inventive cuisine, drawing inspiration from the bounty of the Coachella Valley and its environs, to match with all of the fantastic flavors and nuances present in the Iron Horse’s stable of premium wines to the four course meal.

As to the sparklers for the event, the winemaker’s dinner began with an outdoor patio reception featuring the Iron Horse 2009 Wedding Cuvée Sparkling Wine, which is the winery’s interpretation of a Blanc de Noirs Champagne—a blending of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. A delicious aperitif on its own with aromas of peach, raspberry, and hazel nut following on the palate with pink grapefruit, lime, and stone fruit, and, a perfect partner to the various menu dishes from salads, to charcuterie and cheese platters, and on to something decadent like the a roasted five-cheese macaroni gratin.

The other Iron Horse sparkling wine, the 2007 Brut Rosé, was surprisingly served with the Second Course of Pan Roasted

Fennel Seed Crusted Black Cod with Black Lentil Risotto. I say surprisingly because generally a sturdy white gets served with that dish. But that’s how Chef Schmidt plays it. This is the winery’s most vivid and bold bubbly as to color and flavor, and due to the predominance of Russian River Pinot Noir in this wine, it matched impeccably with the roasted cod and washed through the seasoning of the perfectly prepared risotto.

The restaurant is housed at the Legendary La Quinta Resort & Club and the entire place is impressive. The up-coming lineup of events is just as impressive. From Winemaker Dinners featuring Long Meadow Ranch, Ampelos Winery, Justin Winery, and Swanson Winery to Food Festivals celebrating international foods such as Meyer Lemon, Blue Mussel, Morel Mushroom, Artichoke and Shell Crab, Baja Shrimp & Oyster.

I met with the Restaurant General Manager John Healy who is as personable as can be. He and Chef Schmidt have been a team for over 20 years at different restaurants throughout the country.

Needless to say, their experience, loyalty and professionalism simply engulf both elegance and geniality. For instance, besides the five star dining I enjoyed, they invited me back to the kitchen to sample a few of their freshly made ice creams.

The BlueEmber Restaurant at the Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa is also beginning their Winemaker Dinner Series, featuring the wines of the famed Stag Leap Cellars Winery with their winemaker Marcus Notaro on hand on the evening of January 30th. Cocktail Reception begins at 6pm with the fourcourse meal following.

The esteemed Executive Chef Robert Nyerick, whose wine-pairing dinners I’ve covered often, will be again revealing culinary magic as he gets to play with a palate of world famous premium wines from the winery whose 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon took down the French at the famous Paris tasting.

are as follows: At the Reception, a Scallop Carpaccio will be served with a Sauvignon Blanc; 1st course, Panko Crusted Sea Bass to be paired with the Hands of Time Chardonnay; 2nd Course, Duck 2 Ways, Crispy Confit Leg & Seared Breast matched with Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon; 3rd Course, Grilled Center Cut Black Angus Filet of Beef with Cocoa Dusted Short Rib Ravioli is matched with the Fay Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon; and, 4th Course, Chocolate Decadence, Apricot Crème Brulée with Erioca Gold Late Harvest Riesling.

I’ve recently tasted a couple of these wines. For Chardonnay lovers, you’ll love the 2010 Hands of Time which offers pleasing aromas of lightly-spiced Golden Delicious apples and vanilla wafers along with citrus notes of tangerine and lemon. This carries over on the palate with a solid core of fruit and a supple mouthfeel and will be great with

the sea bass. The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Artemis is laced with sweet red berries, plums, flowers, mint and cloves. It’s got that great Stag Leaps depth and is a mediumbodied wine that’ll go great with the duck.

Sammy G’S Tuscan Grill

W

hen going to a fine restaurant, most of us, including myself, would agree that there are two things that we look for in a dining experience. One is great food, the other is great service. Sammy G’S Tuscan Grill in downtown Palm Springs has both. However, they also add great atmosphere and amazing entertainment. Randyn Seymon was singing and playing guitar to some awesome classics the night we were there and every night has different entertainers.

My wife and I (whom my children cleverly named my sidekick “side dish”) got seated inside in the most comfortable booth I have every sat in at a restaurant. They do have a nice patio area, but in the booth we were as comfortable as if we were at home on our couch. We were immediately greeted by our waiter Bruce. By the time he told us about the specials, we had water and Baguette bread, with the tastiest olive Tapenade, which is a medley of olives, capers, extra virgin olive oil, fresh garlic and Italian herbs, with a kick of crushed red pepper. It was obvious right away that executive chef Sal Zavala Sr. knows what he is doing.

We started by sharing two appetizers: Calamari and Shrimp Scampi. Calamari

is fried squid, fresh with lemon, lightly breaded, with a spicy tomato sauce on the side. The Shrimp Scampi was sautéed in olive oil, lemon, garlic, chile flakes, parsley, and Pinot Grigio wine. Alex, Chef Sal’s nephew, whisked away our appetizer plates just as Bruce came back to check on us and take our entree orders. But first he recommended we have a salad, and we are glad we did. We decided on a Southwest “Broken” Crostini salad; a crunchy tossed salad with blackened chicken, tomato, avocado, bacon, roasted corn, black beans, red onion, and honey mustard dressing. They split it for us, and it was one of the best dishes of the evening.

My wife ordered Hawaiian Sea Bass, which was a special that evening. A fresh wild Sea Bass called Escolar; grilled picante style in white wine, extra virgin olive oil, fresh lemon and capers. It was accompanied with fresh sautéed green beans, steamed baby asparagus spears, roasted fingerling and red potatoes. She enjoyed it so much she only shared one tiny bite. I had the Chicken Parmigiana: free-range, boneless, skinless, chicken breast, hormone free, pounded

thin and covered in Panko bread crumbs, flash fried in canola oil, ladled with house marinara, with fresh garlic and Italian herbs, with mozzarella cheese melted on top. It was served with Linguine Bolognese made with the finest cuts of beef and sided with pork meatballs. It was so big, I could only eat half, and I can eat a lot. With dinner my wife had a glass of very pleasant and a bit oakey Pacific Bay Cabernet Sauvignon. While we were eating our delicious Blueberry Cheesecake and Tiramisu, Bruce recommended the Amalie Lemondrop with Burnett’s Citrus Vodka, fresh lemon juice, and a splash of Caravella Limoncello. My wife loved it! We were getting up to leave, and Bruce said, “Oh no, we still have a surprise for you!” He brought us complimentary Amaretto with homemade biscotti to top things off; as if we needed topping off, but it was a delightful last touch.

new franchise and to hold our attention -neither of which works. This time around, Frankenstein’s creature, now dubbed Adam, is caught up in a war between gargoyles and demons. Yes, you read that right. I don’t remember that in Shelley. Nor do I recall the Creature’s immortality. There’s a strong UNDERWORLD vibe that permeates everything and it’s not for the better. When Lenore, Queen of the Gargoyles entered the picture, there was loud, cynical laughter from some in the sparse audience. It’s here I kind of lost track of the plot.

On the positive side, Eckhart does look amazingly fit as Adam, but the special effects have a thrown together, cheap look. I am not sure what this movie is really about. I think for this kind of movie to connect with an audience, it has to have embedded in it’s theme, a world or universe that is an extension of stuff we feel in real life – no matter how fantastical. Writer director Stuart Beattie was a creative force behind PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL as well as G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA. That may explain a lot.

I’m pretty sure no one sets out to make an intentionally bad film, but you have to wonder at some of the movies that actually reach our neighborhood screens. Last week I – and many others -- had such high hopes for this reboot of the Frankenstein mythos.

The notion of Aaron “Two Face” Eckhart inhabiting the monster for which we have such affection -- and fear -- promised something compelling, no?

Although Eckhart’s voice over at the beginning promises an adherence to what we know about Shelly’s Creature, the quick filmic departure into a character that has little connection to Shelly remarkable novel.

In fact, the end result is a film that would make Mary Shelly spin in her grave. The primary theme of What makes us human? is abandoned. So are the questions regarding our relationship to a Creator.

The finished film is a hodge-podge of bits and pieces that try very hard to establish a

Gangsters Anwar Congo and Adi Zulkadry (North Sumatra) led the most notorious death squads following the failed coup that overthrew Sukarno in 1965. Today, Congo is held in high esteem as the founder of a right-wing militia that grew out of the massive killings.

Director Josh Oppenheimer’s recreation of the killings, with the enthusiastic cooperation of Congo and his cronies, is beyond chilling. The militant organization, Permuda Pancasila, is so powerful it openly boasts of its own corruption. Top political leaders are members who admit rigging election to planning genocide.

With the army’s help, Congo’s death squads killed more than one million people --communists, ethnic Chinese, scholars and intellectuals, etc. -- in less than a year. As the go-to executioner, Congo admits killing hundreds with his own hands.

THE ACT OF KILLING This film was unsettling and, in places, very difficult to watch. The reenactments of the bloody crimes by Congo, in which he chooses to play a victim, led to a cinematic version of his nightmares. Congo breaks down, and wonders if he really has “sinned” or not but vows that he does not want the memories to come back and haunt him.

Oppenheimer’s surreal, fever dream of a documentary knocked the air out of me with its raw, painful, intensity.

More than 35 years ago, Ushio Shinohara was a star in the NYC art scene. Now 80, the “boxing” painter is hard at work preparing for a show he hopes will jump-start his mordant career. His wife Noriko, 25 years his junior, is his assistant, although she is working on a series of “Cutie” illustrations that depict their tumultuous 40-year marriage.

I love this film that’s really about how much we will happily sacrifice if we have art and love in our lives.

This Oscar nominated film will be on Bluray February 4.

ith long orange curls that tuft from under a fedora and thick, black horn-rimmed glasses, Bob Forrest is certainly someone you notice right away. He has an aura about him and it’s not just his colorful hair. You don’t have to know who he is, to know this man has a story to tell. In his new memoir, Running With Monsters (Crown Publishing Group, 240 pages) he chronicles his colorful yet dark past. Speaking at the UCR Palm Desert Arts and Letters Series last week, Forrest candidly shared his experience in a conversation with Program Director Tod Goldberg.

Beyond his eccentric look, it is hard to believe this charismatic and charming man is the notorious drug addict and former front man to the band Thelonious Monster -- a counter-culture, punk band from the 80s and 90s. He continues to write and play music, but his fame now is as a certified drug counselor working with Dr. Drew Pinsky. Forrest is passionate about helping those with addiction and improving addiction treatment.

What’s important to understand about Forrest is he is lucky to be alive – and know it. He’ll soon be 53. He has been through

rehab 24 times. He talks about dying by overdose more than once. When he came back from the dead after his last OD, he realized for the first time it was because of the drugs! In March, Forrest will be sober 18 years.

“Huck Finn at 120 degrees” is how Forrest describes his early years living in the Coachella Valley. As a kid, when he got bored, he was free to roam the wide-open desert on his ATC. “Memories of the desert in the 60s and 70s are always with me.

Wherever you come from, where you grow up, childhood memories just keep coming back. The desert is important to me.”

His family partied here in the desert.

Neighbors and friends would come to the

house. They had a big rumpus room and music filled the home vibrating the wall of Forrest’s bedroom. His three older sisters listened to the Beatles, David Bowie and the rock ‘n roll of the era. Music became part of his life.

But Forrest’s parents drank and life was up and down. “Our parents fought and it usually centered around alcohol,” said Forrest. “All the crazy stuff around our house was due to alcohol. I loved my dad.

Parent relationships, you can see them with a critical eye and you can love them unconditionally and you can see them as larger than life.” His father died in 1976.

Forrest has two sons, 27 and three.

“Writing a book is a painful way to look back,” said Forrest. “Thinking about your life and telling the stories. It’s like why didn’t I see that then.” Musicians with a reputation as terrible drug addicts and alcoholics like Shane MacGowan of the Pogues and Paul Westerberg of the Replacements, didn’t want to work with Forrest because of his problems with addiction. They feared he was going to die. “I was puzzled by the confusion over what the real problem was.

They were the ones with the big problem. It never dawned on me,” said Forrest. “Denial is a perfect combination of thoughts in your head. It’s hopeful optimism.”

Forrest suggests asking a user about his or her game plan rather than arguing if they are an addict or not. He attacks their hopeful optimism. “That will usually bring a clear idea of the craziness of their lifestyle,” said Forrest. That worked on him. He was asked about a job and he said he was a musician. When they asked when he played last or made an album, he was challenged to remember, since it had been several years back. “To me, in my fantasy denial world, it was just three weeks ago.”

Peppers was instrumental in Forrest -- and others in their circle of friends -- getting sober. “He was so far out ahead of us as a drug addict that we used him as a comparison. We’d say, ‘If I ever get as bad as Anthony then I’ll stop,’” said Forrest.

“Then he [Kiedis] stopped and got sober.”

Kiedis arranged for Forrest’s first treatment program.

“Most addicts can get sober. It’s a question of when,” said Forrest. “My own witness with thousands of addicts and the hundreds of friends I have. They can get sober.” Forrest cautions family members about the “for profit” business of recovery.

He warns families who are willing to pay any amount of money to help their loved one. “Just because it’s expensive, doesn’t mean it’s more effective,” he said. “Not only don’t you get the best, you don’t even get mediocre. It’s a strange phenomenon in our economy that we’re not used to. You can trust a nonprofit.”

Kiedis went on to change 50 to 60 people’s lives in a few years at the Salvation Army in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Forrest believes one-to-one personal treatment is most effective in recovery.

When Forrest finished talking with Goldberg, he picked up his guitar and played “Cereal” -- a song from Bicycle Thief –- about how drugs destroyed his health and life. Singing was a gift he wanted to share with the UCR audience.

Forrest is animated and glad to be alive. Signing books after the program, a woman asked that he inscribe his memoir to a young man in his fourth round of rehab.

Forrest signed ‘I,’ drew a heart followed by the word ‘life’, then, ‘I hope you do too’ and put down his personal phone number so the young man could call and talk with him anytime.

For Forrest, overcoming addiction was a monster achievement and it is now his mission to help as many as he can to recover their lives.

Palm Springs prepares for firsts and sophistication in celebration of Black History Month 2014 No Dorothy you are not in Kansas anymore, you are in Palm Springs and The Palm Springs Black History Committee is set to kick off Black History Month in Palm Springs with a bang! February is normally the official national recognized month to celebrate Black History, but the PSBHC will start early this year. January 30, 2014 the PSBHC and the City of Palm Springs will open its first full African American Art Exhibition, Civil Rights in America; Where Are We Now?. The Art exhibition will feature the works of world renowned celebrated artists Synthia SAINT JAMES and Charles Bibbs. The exhibition is located in The Sheffer/Scheffler Arts Education Space in the Hoover Gallery at the Palm Springs Art Museum. The PSBHC will host an Artist meet and greet January 30, 2014 6PM-8PM. Both Synthia and Charles will be there and the public is invited to attend. This event is free.

Beginning in 1989, Frank and Barbara Sinatra began inviting friends, family and friends they hadn’t yet met out to the desert to play some golf and have some major fun while supporting The Barbara Sinatra Center for Abused Children on the Eisenhower Medical Center Campus in Rancho Mirage.

Now in its 26th year, The Frank Sinatra Celebrity Invitational, sponsored by Starkey Hearing Technologies and hosted for the fifth year by Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, is still known as “Frank’s little party in the desert” and takes place Feb. 20 through 22 in Indio.

eath and taxes - two things you can be certain of unless you are a corporation1 or a credit union. 2 The IRS began accepting tax returns for the 2013 tax year on Friday, January 31st.

This is one day later than last year and nine days later than the year before. This year’s delay is due to the government shutdown that happened last year3 while the previous year’s delay was attributed to the American Taxpayer Relief Act which was passed to help in averting a government shutdown. 4 According to the IRS, nearly 150 million tax returns were filed of which all but 28.4 million were filed electronically last year.

You have ten weeks to file your taxes unless you choose to file an extension which gives you another six months. If you choose the extension, this does not get you off of the hook on paying taxes that are due.

The IRS can penalize you and charge interest (3% at present) on underpayments. This is probably why most of us overpay during the year and receive refunds that average nearly $3,000 per filer. Here in California, the average refund is $2,909. 5 If you are doing your own taxes, use a computer tax program such as TurboTax. The U.S. tax code is so complex that many tax

professionals have trouble keeping up with all of the changes and conflicting guidance in the tax codes voluminous 77,030 pages. If you are hiring a tax professional, make sure you choose someone who will be around for a few years. Stay away from anyone who says that they get larger refunds than others in their field and especially stay away from anyone who bases their fee on the amount of your refund. Tax evasion can be

punishable with a $250,000 fine and up to five years in prison. 6 New tax laws that were in effect for 2013 include the reinstatement of the Social Security Tax at 6.2% (was 4.2%) of your wages on up to $113,700 in earnings. The Medicare tax remains unlimited at 1.45% of wages with those earning over $200,000 paying an extra 0.9%. Remember to deduct sales and local taxes against federal taxes.

In California, do not be surprised if the Franchise Tax Board comes after you for online or out of state purchases where no interest was paid.

There is now a standard home office deduction of $1,500 that can be used if you do not want to keep track of actual expenses.

If you are going through a foreclosure or short sale, you will probably not have to count the debt elimination as income (before the Great Recession, you did). If you pay mortgage insurance premiums, these are deductible as mortgage interest.

Same sex married couples may now file as ‘married filing jointly’.

The standard mileage rate for the use of your car in business is 56.5 cents per mile, 24 cents for medical or moving purposes and 14 cents when used in service for charities.

In 2014, mileage rates for business, medical and moving decrease by 0.5 cents per mile.

JUSTIN BEIBER IS HAVING SOME ISSUES

T

o say Justin Bieber is having “some issues” is a gross understatement. He is fortunate this DUI incident occurred in Miami, Florida rather than California. The Bieb was arrested in Florida for a DUI, not cooperating with the police and drag racing. Two of his “henchman” were blocking off the streets so there would be no traffic. There is some indication his dad was involved or at least he was there and aware of this. One questions where his parents have been for the last few years. The Biebs actions are those of a “teen punk” who had no parental supervision growing up.

Bieber admitted to smoking MJ and taking RX pills that “his mother” gave him. Whether the drugs were prescribed or not it is still illegal to drive under the influence of a drug. When Bieber mixed alcohol and a drug it created “Potentiation” which would make Bieber much more under the influence with his Breath test results level than he would have been without the drugs. In California Bieber would be filed upon for Driving under the “COMBINED” influence of Alcohol and a Drug. But we are dealing with Florida law which is a little different.

If Bieber were arrested for a DUI in California he would have an immediate driver license suspension for a year as a result of the ZERO TOLERANCE LAW. In other words a minor cannot have any alcohol in his/her system. The California Vehicle Code Section 23136 discusses persons under 21. In Florida the suspension is only for 6 months and the California DMV would probably follow this ruling.

Just as with adults, there are 2 separate proceedings that are initiated by a DUI arrest…… the court and the DMV. The California DMV is required to suspend or revoke the driving privilege of any person under 21 who was detained and or arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or a combination of alcohol and drugs who: 1. Takes a preliminary alcohol screening (PAS) test or a chemical test (blood) with a Blood alcohol content of .01% or more … or 2. Refuses to take, or fails to complete a PAS or other chemical test.

When this occurs the officer gives the arrestee a suspension/revocation order and a pink piece of paper which is a temporary license to drive for 30 days….IF the driver had a valid California driver’s license. If the person stopped had a valid license the officer takes it under the “stop and snatch” law and sends it to Sacramento to be destroyed. The pink temporary driver’s license is valid for 30 days from the issue date. At the end of the 30 days the suspension/revocation action goes into effect and the license for an adult is gone for 4-5 months.

A minor in California, like an adult, has 10 days to request an administrative hearing and his attorney can request a STAY or freeze on the suspension until after the DMV hearing’s results are received. However we are following Florida law and thus Bieber should have his license suspended for 6 months…however he will be on probation and I suspect his neighbors in Calabasas are probably likely to report him for any “unneighborly” activity like that which has occurred in the last year.

Bieber has been on a roll with spitting on

a photographer, allegedly throwing eggs at a neighbor’s home causing $20,000 in property damage and drag racing down the neighborhood streets. His neighbors hate him and are likely to report him for any future indiscretions. These lapses of good judgment in the past were no big deal but being on probation he is more likely to be prosecuted for these minor “childish acts”.

Because he has no relationship with his neighbors I would suspect if they saw him driving they might report him to the local police who might cite him thus causing him to come to the attention of DMV. In the alternative some California DMV employee might take it upon themselves to order Bieber to get a California license since he lives in California and NOT GEORGIA. The Zero tolerance suspension for a minor like Bieber is independent of any other DMV adverse action or any jail, fine or other criminal penalty imposed in court if Bieber were convicted of the DUI offense in California. In California he would have to attend DUI classes and possibly attend AA classes.

anuary for the Coachella Valley real estate market is usually a month of recovery.

Traditionally from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve a large number of home buyers, both investors and owner occupants, take a break from shopping for houses and focus their spending on the holidays. This usually lingers for a week or two into January before our market starts to really take off on what is referred to as our “season”. So far 2014 is right on schedule!

I receive hundreds of emails each week updating me on the national, state and local real estate markets. Even though one of my new year’s resolutions was to try and stay more focused, I just can’t stop reading this mountain of statistical data accompanied by the various author’s interpretations, opinions and predications. As my good friend Robert Mott, the owner of the La Quinta Wine Bar, is fond of saying, “I taste a lot of bad wines so you don’t have to!” So in this case I guess I read a lot of bad articles and opinions about the current real estate market so you don’t have to! By selecting the best of the internet offerings and applying local statistics from the Desert Area MLS, I plan to keep CV Weekly readers updated this year with accurate and relative information to use when making real

estate related decisions… or at the very least, be better prepared to deal with real estate know-it-alls at the next cocktail party!

In the first part of last year we saw the demise of the REO market, the surge of the Short Sale and the combination of historically low interest rates with a lack of housing inventory that pushed prices up over 30% in many local neighborhoods to create a seller’s market. But toward the end of last year we saw this trend begin to change with an increase in the interest rate (by approximately one full percentage point), and a significant increase in inventory.

Add to this the lack of sales in December and home prices in most Coachella Valley neighborhoods began to stabilize and in a few cases actually went down.

In July 2013 there were 2,799 homes and condominiums available for sale in the Coachella Valley (Palm Springs to Coachella). Today there are 4,226 available.

In that same time period (approximately 6 months) the average sold price went up 8% and the number of actual sales went down from 871 in July 2013 to 593 over the last 30 days. Simply put, right now inventory is up, prices are up and the total number of sales is down for houses and condos in the Coachella Valley. While this may not be true for your specific neighborhood, this is what is happening across the Valley. If this trend continues look for home sale prices to come down again.

Will this trend continue? Right now it is still a little too early to say. This month I listed and sold an REO in Coachella in the $140,000.00 price range. 6 Months ago I would have had perhaps 30 offers on this property. I only received 6, but 6 offers is a lot of offers and a strong sign that there is still a pent up demand for properties in this price range and area. Last year in our valley there were 475 homes and condos (combined) that sold for over $1,000,000.00. In the last 30 days there were 49… or over 10% of the year’s total (one of which sold in Big Horn for $6,500,000.00!) and that too is a pretty darn good sign that the upper end of the market is still going strong!

I have read enough “expert” opinions recently to state that the majority of them all believe that mortgage interest rates and home prices will both continue to rise throughout 2014. Of course both fell slightly here in the Coachella Valley in our first

month of the year. January for the Coachella Valley real estate market is usually a month of recovery. All of the brokers and agents that I have spoken with recently across the valley indicate that their activity (listing and selling) is up significantly which I too can confirm with my own experience so far this month. Together we will watch and see over the coming months if the Coachella Valley real estate market will continue January’s early signs or recovery or not.

Real Estate Tip of the week: Interest rates went down a little this week helping buyers and those looking to refinance their current home loans. If you have been sitting on the fence waiting for a sign… this may be your call to action!

Be a good Line Backer and take steps to make sure you and other guests avoid driving under the influence of alcohol. Be a good Center and designate

a non-drinking driver before any party or celebration begins. Never leave children unattended. Make sure your pets can handle the excitement before placing them in new or strange situations. Don’t be the “Offensive Lineman” by being a poor sport or offending others. People and their behavior have a tendency to change on Super Bowl Sunday. Don’t get tackled unexpectantly, keep the attitude in check and use common sense!

New, Exciting Changes for KMIR-NBC

MIR, the NBC affiliate in the Coachella Valley, has revealed major reinvestment in local news.

The station’s new owner, OTA Broadcasting, has announced that beginning Wednesday, January 29th, KMIR will add a one-hour newscast weekdays at 11 a.m. to be called KMIR Midday. Gloria Rodriguez and Thalia Hayden of KMIR Today will serve as anchors.

“It’s another example of our strong commitment to local news,” Craig Marrs,Vice-President and General Manager of KMIR and its sister station, KPSE, says.

“We’re serving the Coachella Valley with more news featuring our helpful and popular “You Ask. We Investigate.” and “Eye Sore Next Door” stories.”

KMIR, which can now be seen on Time Warner Cable Channel 13, is getting ready for the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games which will air on the station beginning February 6th.

The station will retain its brand promise of “Making the Coachella Valley a Better Place to Live” through its advocacy statement of “You Ask. We Investigate.”

ARIES (March 21-April 19): On my fifteenth birthday, I finally figured out that eating dairy products was the cause of my chronic respiratory problems. From that day forward, I avoided foods made from cow’s milk. My health improved. I kept up this regimen for years. But a month ago, I decided to see if my long-standing taboo still made sense. Just for the fun of it, I gave myself permission to gorge on a tub of organic vanilla yogurt. To my shock, there was no hell to pay. I was free of snot.

In the last few weeks, I have feasted regularly on all the creamy goodies I’ve been missing. I bring this up, Aries, because I suspect an equally momentous shift is possible for you. Some taboo you have honored for a long time, some rule you have obeyed as if it were an axiom, is ripe to be broken.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Psychologist Daniel Kahneman, who won a Nobel Prize in Economics, says that consulting experts may be useless. In his study of Wall Street traders, he found their advice was no better than information obtained by a chimpanzee flipping a coin. Meanwhile, psychologist Philip Tetlock did a 20-year study with similar results. He found that predictions made by political and financial professionals are inferior to wild guesses. So does this mean you should never trust any experts? No. But it’s important to approach them with extra skepticism right now. The time has come for you to upgrade your trust in your own intuition.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): I’m a big fan of logic and reason, and I urge you to be, too. Using your rational mind to understand your experience is a very good thing. The less stock you put in superstitious head trips and fear-based beliefs, the smarter you will be. Having said that, I recommend that you also make playful use of your creative imagination. Relish the comically magical elements of your mysterious fate. Pay attention to your dreams, and indulge in the pleasure of wild fantasies, and see yourself as a mythic hero in life’s divine drama. Moral of the story: Both the rational and the fantastical approaches are essential to your health. (P.S. But the fantastical needs extra exercise in the coming weeks.)

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Sorry, Cancerian, you won’t be able to transform lead into gold anytime soon. You won’t suddenly acquire the wizardly power to heal the sick minds of racists and homophobes and misogynists. Nor will you be able to cast an effective love spell on a sexy someone who has always resisted your charms. That’s the bad news. The good news is this: If you focus on performing less spectacular magic, you could accomplish minor miracles. For example, you might diminish an adversary’s ability to disturb you. You could welcome into your life a source of love you have ignored or underestimated. And you may be able to discover a secret you hid from yourself a long time ago.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Cosmopolitan magazine is famous for offering tips on how to spice up one’s sex life. Here’s an example: “Take a few of your favorite erotically appealing flavor combinations, like peanut butter and honey or whipped cream and chocolate sauce, and mix up yummy treats all over your lover’s body.” That sounds crazy to me, and not in a good way. In any case, I recommend that you don’t follow advice like that, especially in the coming days. It’s true that on some occasions, silliness and messiness have a role to play in building intimacy. But they aren’t advisable right now. For best results, be smooth and polished and dashing and deft. Togetherness will thrive on elegant experiments and graceful risks.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You are not as broken as you may think you are. Your wounds aren’t as debilitating as you have imagined. And life will prove it to you this week. Or rather, let me put it this way: Life will attempt to prove it to you -- and not just in some mild, half-hearted way, either. The evidence it offers will be robust and unimpeachable. But here’s my question, Virgo: Will you be so attached to your pain that you refuse to even see, let alone explore, the dramatic proof you are offered? I hope not!

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Kenneth Rexroth wrote a poem called “A Sword in a Cloud of Light.”

I want to borrow that image. According to my astrological analysis and poetic intuition, you will generate the exact power you need in the coming weeks by imprinting your imagination with a vision of a sword in a cloud of light. I don’t want to get too intellectual about the reasons why, but I will say this: The cloud of light represents your noble purpose or your sacred aspiration. The sword is a metaphor to symbolize the new ferocity you will invoke as you implement the next step of your noble purpose or sacred aspiration.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Every autumn, the bird species known as the Clark’s Nutcracker prepares for its winter food needs by burying 30,000 pine nuts in 5,000 places over a 15-squaremile area. The amazing thing is that it remembers where almost all of them are. Your memory isn’t as prodigious as that, but it’s far better than you realize. And I hope you will use it to the hilt in the coming days. Your upcoming decisions will be highly effective if you draw on the wisdom gained from past events -- especially those events that foreshadowed the transition you will soon be going through.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Can you imagine what it would be like to live without any hiding and pretending? How would you feel if you could relax into total honesty? What if you were free to say exactly what you mean, unburdened by the fear that telling the truth might lead to awkward complications? Such a pure and exalted condition is impossible for anyone to accomplish, of course.

But you have a shot at accomplishing the next best thing in the coming week. For best results, don’t try to be perfectly candid and utterly uninhibited. Aim for 75 percent.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): It’s a favorable time to gather up resources and amass bounty and solicit help and collect lots of inside information.

I won’t call you greedy if you focus on getting exactly what you need in order to feel comfortable and strong. In fact, I think it’s fine if you store up far more than what you can immediately use -- because right now is also a favorable time to prepare for future adventures when you will want to call on extraordinary levels of resources, bounty, help, and inside information.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Extravagant wigs became fashionable for a while in 18th-century England. They could soar as high as four feet above a woman’s head. Collections of fruit might be arrayed in the mass of hair, along with small replicas of gardens, taxidermically stuffed birds, and model ships. I would love to see you wear something like that in the coming week. But if this seems too extreme, here’s a second-best option: Make your face and head and hair as sexy as possible. Use your alluring gaze and confident bearing to attract more of the attention and resources you need. You have a poetic license to be shinier and more charismatic than usual.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): One of your antirole models in the coming weeks is the character that Piscean diva Rihanna portrays when she sings in Eminem’s tune “Love the Way You Lie.” Study the following lyrics, mouthed by Rihanna, and make sure that in every way you can imagine, on psychological, spiritual, and interpersonal levels, you embody the exact opposite of the attitude they express: “You’re just gonna stand there and watch me burn / But that’s all right because I like the way it hurts / You’re just gonna stand there and hear me cry / But that’s all right, because I love the way you lie.” To reiterate, Pisces, avoid all situations that would tempt you to feel and act like that.

Alkaline Your Body

M

eeting the needs your body demands related to an acid alkaline balance is serious business. We have a pH balance that is predetermined by the amount of acid in our body. There is speculation about a diet calling for alkaline dominance. Generally, a vegetarian diet is the optimum way of achieving less acid in the body.

However, you do not have to be a vegetarian to keep a healthy body. Maintaining the body neutral in alkaline will help you avoid symptoms as indigestion, nausea, belching, hunger pangs, and heartburn. If this represents you, you may need to affect adjustments to your diet.

It is possible you never realize any of the above symptoms. If the above symptoms haunt you, it is time to consider checking your pH balances. A diet high in refined sugars, processed meats, corn, eggs, some dairy products, beans, and deep fried foods, all contribute to acid in the system. Therefore, it is time to rethink and modify your menu. It is suggested a goal of 7.35 to 7.45 on a scale of 0 to 14 is neutral. If your pH balance is below 7.4, you are in danger of an unbalanced pH. If this is you, it is time to implement adjustments.

Amending your diet and abandoning poor habits will be challenging. Keep in mind this is about your health. Additional foods and drinks contributing to acid in the body include the following; soda drinks, wine, caffeinated drinks (coffee and teas), a diet high in rich meats, (lamb, pork, turkey and some fish.) White pasta, oats, barley, and wheat (gluten based

foods) are considered acidic foods. Foods that will facilitate lower acid levels are most fruits and vegetables, whey protein, Greek yogurt, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, squash, and a variety of spices to include cinnamon, mustard, curry and chili pepper. You will also find Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar one tablespoon, three times per day will contribute greatly to keeping your acid levels down or neutral. Although it may be tough to swallow, your taste buds will acclimate. Also, consider probiotics. There are a variety of choices at your local health food stores targeting specific needs. Lastly, drink alkaline water. Kangen water systems are a wonderful place to begin.

Do you want to know your pH balance?

Test yourself. It is simple. Purchase pH balance strips at your local drug store. Follow directions, test, and evaluate. After you see your results you will know whether your diet needs a reevaluation. Also, keep in mind stress contributes to any and all things happening within your body. If your pH is off you may need to change your diet but your exercise routine may need assistance also. Trying to achieve health by performing one without the other nearly defeats the purpose of a healthy body.

In the Words of Eleanor

T

he other night I attended a panel discussion based on Sheryl Sandberg’s book, “Lean In.” It was an interesting and lively dialogue leaving me with many valuable take-aways. One of comments that resonated with me came from a panelist named Stacy, a licensed physical therapist.

Pertaining to her treatment of stroke patients, Stacy explained if they are comfortable in their therapy she is not doing her job. She added, “For the brain to recover, to build new pathways, we have to stretch ourselves outside our comfort zone and experience new things.”

Stacy shared how she applies that philosophy to her everyday living. “If you’re feeling comfortable with your life and your career, change it up. We are only growing when we’re uncomfortable.” Each day she challenges herself to step outside of the box, no matter how scary or how loudly her inner voice begs her not to. Stacy believes in the words of Eleanor Roosevelt who urged us to “do one thing every day that scares you.”

Eleanor is indeed an admirable role model. In her memoir “My Year with Eleanor,” Noelle Hancock gains the courage to face scary growth challenges on a daily basis by studying the life of the former First Lady. The author committed 365 days to following Eleanor’s wise counsel on the benefits of embracing challenges and overcoming our fears.

Think about it. Whether it is challenging a minor fear daily or a monster fear over time, the key to accomplishing tasks is having the guts to do it. Take a look at the list of goals you created for 2014. Are any missing? Perhaps it’s the thing you would like to accomplish most but are just too darn chicken to attempt.

Try rethinking the goal with an if/then

scenario. For example, years ago I wanted to carve out a successful corporate career. The only thing preventing success was my fear of public speaking. Rising through the ranks meant having the courage to face a group of two or two-hundred or more. My if/then was proposal went like this: If I conquer my fear of public speaking then I will be able to grow my career. Wanting it badly enough prompted me to enroll in a Dale Carnegie course. Still no easy feat, I repeated the course twice to make sure I would no longer tremble with knees knocking when asked to present to an audience.

What’s holding you back? Commit to looking fear in the face and staring it down. As Stacy so wisely advised, if you are comfortable, you are not growing!

Colds, flus, mucus & you Dear Dr. Kadile, I know antibiotics do not work for the common cold, but what about when my mucus turns green?

-Carol, La Quinta Carol, this subject regarding the color of one’s mucus or phlegm determining the need for antibiotics is another one of the must frustrating medical myths primary care physicians encounter in their practices.

Since we are now into cold and flu season, I deal with this type of question quite frequently in my own practice.

When you have cold symptoms and blow your nose or cough up phlegm that is green, this does not mean you have a bacterial infection which would need antibiotics.

The green color comes from enzymes released by your white blood cells used to fight off the infection. When your sinuses are clogged during a cold, the mucus in the sinuses will stagnate and appear green when you sneeze or blow your nose.

The bottom line is that green mucus or phlegm does not mean you need antibiotics.

Dear Dr. Kadile, a lot of my fellow co-workers have had symptoms of runny nose, congestion and cough. I can’t afford to get sick, shouldn’t I be proactive and take an antibiotic to prevent me from getting something? -George, Palm Desert George, it sounds like your co-workers have had colds. As I’ve said in the past, colds are caused by viruses, NOT bacteria. Viruses

DO NOT respond to antibiotics. Taking an antibiotic to prevent you from getting a cold would be worthless. The best method of prevention would be to wash your hands frequently and avoid contact with the sick.

A cold typically starts out with a sore throat and then leads to sinus congestion, runny nose, sneezing and a cough. Fevers rarely occur in a cold. Of course you just don’t feel good with a cold, but a cold will generally resolve in less than a week. The flu may make you feel quite ill for a few days to weeks. Flu symptoms generally develop quite quickly and can manifest with severe sore throat, fevers, headaches/body aches, congestion, cough, nausea/vomiting and diarrhea.
