Idyllwild Arts Foundation presents its annual Native American Arts Festival Week at the Idyllwild Arts campus from Sunday June 18 to Friday, June 23, 2023. The week-long event, which has run each summer for over two decades, is designed to enhance and enrich the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program with Native American artsbased programming including an invitational exhibition, demonstrations, Native food tastings and the Michael Kabotie Lecture Series. All festival week events are free and open to the public.

Idyllwild Arts is an institution rooted in respect, reverence, and support for Native American people and is the only residential arts high school in the country to offer a Native American Arts program. Idyllwild Arts is also advancing its promise to continue expanding Native American Arts & Education with the upcoming debut of a dedicated Native American Arts Center on campus.

This year’s Native American Arts Festival is again being led by Native American Executive Director, Shaliyah Ben (Diné), whose vision will bring to life this year’s theme, an examination and celebration of Native humor, comedy and joy. After the past few difficult years, humor is an important tool to help heal within while also

coping with and accepting new realities. The unique week of programming seeks to inspire internal reflection and laughter while also igniting important conversations about topics that shape Indigenous communities by bringing together scientific, intuitive, and trickster voices for a balanced and provocative learning experience.

Highlights of this year’s festival include the Opening Day Celebration “Welcoming Home the Birds,” which is a full day of cultural programming and sharing of Cahuilla and Serrano Bird Singing. Attendees are invited to taste California Native Foods presented by Willie Pink (Luiseño). There will be a plethora of artist vendors and hands-on activities will be provided by Tony Soares, Lily Clarke (Cahuilla) and Lorene Sisquoc (Cahuilla/Apache) with the Mother Earth Clan.

Curated by Meranda Roberts (Numu/ Xicana), this year’s invitational exhibition: Still We Smile: Humor as Correction and Joy”, opens on Monday June 19 and will feature a range of artistic mediums from multimedia works to prints and photography. An artist/curator-led panel discussion takes place at 7 pm in the Parks Exhibition Center followed by a reception. The exhibition explores the concept of humor, and joy and its role within Indigenous communities to

express love, share good humor, cope and correct behaviors. On Tuesday, June 20 thru Thursday, June 22 the Michael Kabotie Lecture Series returns to campus for a series of comedy-themed, in-person lectures during the noon hour, which will also stream live on Facebook and YouTube.

The week of programming will culminate with The Good Medicine Comedy Showcase on the evening of Friday, June 23. Organized by Jackie Keliiaa (Yerington Paiute/Washoe) and headlined by Tatanka Means (Navajo/ Ogala Lakota/Yankton/Omaha), the event promises to be a fun gathering and sharing of Native Humor.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Ana and her husband Danny met on a barber chair 14 years ago when she cut his hair. They have been married now for 11 years and working together for the past seven. Ana was a hair and makeup artist before she became an entrepreneur, and Danny worked for All Bright as a window cleaner during the day and at Lulus California Bistro as a busser in the evening. Eager to become a business owner he worked doubles Monday-Friday for 4 years saving up tips to give them a nest egg

to help launch their business.

In 2013 they wanted to start a business they could do together on the weekends because the only day they had off together was Sunday. One day while they were reading an entrepreneur magazine at Borders in the mall, they came across an article that listed photo booth as one of the top three businesses to start with less than $10,000 and no experience. Inspired by this, the next day, during his lunch break, Danny applied for a loan, got approved and Partylife

Photobooth was born. They paid off their first photo booth with his tips, and gradually they went from one party a month to two to three or four and then every weekend. With their rapid success they had no choice but to leave their jobs and go for it. Fortunately, both have had that entrepreneur drive even as young kids. Their photo booths are modern and up to date, with software that is customized for their clients’ needs and expectations. They strive to go above and beyond for every client that

books them, and they take pride in providing an overall entertaining and memorable experience.

They stay up to date with the latest trends in the industry and always provide the best props, backdrops, artwork, photo albums, personalized branding & graphics. All their booths include a fun and engaging photo booth attendant that will have guests coming back for more photos. They offer ATM photo booths and two incredibly unique 360 video booths, and they are looking to add additional forms of entertainment in the future. They specialize in everything from birthday parties, corporate events, country club events and weddings to community events, grand openings, anniversaries, and special events. They are preferred vendors at PGA West Private, Desert Willow Golf Club, Toscana Country Club & Agua Caliente Casino Rancho Mirage.

In the brief time Partylife Photobooth has been in business they have discovered they love the flexibility of their entrepreneur lifestyle and creating their own schedules. Being a part of local events and seeing people smile is also something they deeply enjoy. Danny and Ana’s passion is to focus on promoting other business as well capturing great content for them.

EVENTS
June 15 to June 21, 2023 www.coachellavalleyweekly.com 6

While AI has the potential to bring about significant benefits and advancements in various fields, such as healthcare, transportation, and scientific research, it also poses certain risks. The development of advanced AI systems raises concerns about the potential for unintended consequences or misuse that could have catastrophic outcomes.

Hundreds of leaders in the artificial intelligence field have signed a one-sentence statement warning that the artificial intelligence they are developing might one day constitute an existential danger to humanity. “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war,” the nonprofit Centre for AI Safety says in a statement. The letter was signed by 350 researchers and executives, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, and Anthrophic CEO Dario Amodei

The sudden call comes amid significant breakthroughs in AI, which have raised concerns about the technology’s potential hazards.

The possible threat of AI extinguishing humankind

Existential risks are posed by events that would either annihilate Earth-originating intelligent life or permanently and drastically curtail its potential. Asteroid impacts, climate change, and nuclear war are all potential existential threats, but they are only the

beginning as one concern outweighs that of existential risk researchers: Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). AI might be the ultimate existential threat. For the next hundred years, prominent academics and industry executives predict that the risk of AI triggering human extinction is one in ten.

• A bipartisan group of US legislators submitted legislation in April to prohibit AI from making launch decisions within the US nuclear command and control systems. The Block Nuclear Launch by Autonomous Artificial Intelligence Act would formalize existing Pentagon policy requiring human intervention to begin any nuclear launch and would prohibit the use of government funding to carry out any launch by artificially intelligent systems. The Act requires

“meaningful human control” over nuclear launches.

• Others have raised concerns about the possible economic repercussions that may cascade across a wide range of businesses should AI be used for labor, upending societies all over the world, in response to what appear to be less sinister uses of the technology, such as Open AI’s chatbot ChatGPT. Chatbots have also raised fears that computer programs may be used to fool humans online and share propaganda and disinformation throughout the world.

• An Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) or Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) system that is as intelligent as or more intelligent than humans will be able to self-improve iteratively, resulting in an intelligence explosion. If humans can regulate AGI before it becomes a problem, it might lead to a slew of new scientific and business breakthroughs. It may herald a period of super-exponential growth and progress in all fields of research.

• Because it is unlikely that humans would be able to govern an AGI/ASI once it arises, AI poses an existential threat. The AI might either intentionally or unintentionally wipe out humanity or lock people in an everlasting dystopia. Alternatively, a malicious actor may employ AI to enslave the rest of humanity or worse.

• At the same time, we frequently develop things that, until we have duplicated them, we do not fully comprehend. Extreme trial and error, or even accident, is a common part of innovation. It’s also possible that we’ll develop an algorithm that can simulate general intelligence without fully comprehending it, or that we’ll mostly get there by scaling up existing methods

• Those working in the growing field of AI Safety have been attempting to create a Friendly AI by matching AGI/ASI values with human values, as experts seek to avert tragedy. However, the “alignment problem” has yet to be resolved: no agreement on how

to proceed has been reached, and no solution is in sight.

To Conclude

Since the inception of existential risk studies, humanity has lost a lot of its naive optimism about major technological advances. While few people previously believed the idea that technological advancement is universally harmful, the contrary perspective, that technical development is universally good, has become widespread. Existential risk study suggests that we should reevaluate that notion, as it constantly indicates that we face extinction as a result of our creations Instead, we should prioritize risk-gain tradeoffs for individual technologies.

Some proponents of placing guardrails argue that strict regulations and oversight are necessary to ensure the safe and ethical development and deployment of AI. These measures could involve implementing transparent and accountable processes, conducting thorough risk assessments, and establishing guidelines for AI research and applications. By proactively addressing potential risks and mitigating them, we can aim to prevent or minimize the likelihood of harmful outcomes, including human extinction.

While on the other hand, others argue against overly restrictive measures, suggesting that they could stifle innovation and hinder the potential benefits of AI. They believe that focusing on responsible development practices, industry selfregulation, and open dialogue can be effective in addressing concerns without hindering progress. Additionally, it is worth noting that some experts consider the idea of AI causing human extinction to be highly speculative, emphasizing the need for balanced discussions based on empirical evidence.

Ultimately, the question of using guardrails around AI and controlling its development requires ongoing discussions, involving a wide range of stakeholders, including researchers, policymakers, ethicists, and the general public. It is important to strike a balance between fostering innovation and addressing the potential risks to ensure that AI benefits humanity while minimizing potential harm.

RIVAL SONS “DARKFIGHTER” (LOW COUNTRY SOUND/ATLANTIC)

If Artificial Intelligence were to create a perfect Rock N’ Roll band, it would probably require four essential components: a charismatic frontman, an enigmatic, virtuoso guitarist, a stoic bassist and a wild-man drummer. But no matter how perfect that designer imposter might simulate that primitive cool, it could never come close to replicating the thrilling, full-throttle sound that Rival Sons have been generating since 2009.

With the release of their debut long-player, Before The Fire, the Long Beach four-piece, which includes vocalist Jay Buchanan, guitarist Scott Holiday, bassist Robin Everhart and drummer Michael Miley hit the ground running. Nonstop touring got them noticed, especially on foreign soil. Soon enough, they were opening for legendary bands like Judas Priest, AC/DC and Alice Cooper. A self-titled EP followed in 2010 and included incendiary crowd-pleasers like “Torture” and “Soul.” Rather quickly, they inked a deal with Earache Records, a British Death Metal/Grindcore label. whose roster included bands like Fudge Tunnel, Carcass and Wormrot . The Sons were the first straight-ahead Rock N’ Roll act they signed. Drafting off the blueprint the band established with producer Dave Cobb (who had helmed both Before The Fire and Rival Sons), they retreated to the studio and wrote and recorded their third effort, Pressure And Time in an astonishing 20 days. That was the record that hooked me.

My pal Tom insisted I check out Rival Sons and Pressure... was my gateway drug. The record was such a pure blast of adrenalized Rock N’ Roll. It was exactly what I needed at the time, I just didn’t know it. Hints of their myriad influences, Blues, Jazz and Soul, Eric Burdon, Bad Company, Jeff Beck, The Who, Led Zep and The Sweet, were distilled in their music, but never in a derivative, connect-the-dots fashion. It was one of those sublime records that revealed something new with each spin. Every time I decided on a favorite song (What? I’m a record nerd it’s what we do), like “Young Love” or “Burn Down Los Angeles,” I would immediately be drawn in by the Blitzkrieg energy of “Save Me” or the modal elegance of “White Noise.”

Each successive record felt like a giant leap forward for the Sons. 2012’s Head Down was as sprawling and expansive as Pressure And Time was crisp and concise. The record featured barn-burners like “Keep On Swinging,” molten face-melters like “Manifest Destiny Pt. 1” and inconsolable infection point, “Jordan.”

Unfortunately, at this point, Robin decided he’d had enough of life on the road and amicably parted ways with the band. Luckily, the Sons recruited their compadre, bassist Dave Beste, and wrapped up pending tour obligations. By the time they commenced recording the next one, he had been jumped into the Rival Sons gang permanently.

Released in 2014, that album, Great Western Valkyrie struck a balance between the polar extremes of Pressure… and Head… Serving up bangers like “Electric Man” and “Belle Starr,” the sonic sludge of “Open My Eyes” the Glam-tastic raver “Secret” and the contemplative grace of “Where I’ve Been.”

By now, Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page had proclaimed Rival Sons his new favorite band and they had shared stages with heroes like Aerosmith, Guns n’ Roses, Lenny Kravitz and Deep Purple. Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne were so impressed, the couple asked the Sons to be the only opening act for Black Sabbath’s farewell world tour. Thanks to the once-in-a-lifetime Sabbath opportunity, the band, now augmented by beardy tour-mate Todd Ogren-Brooks on keys, had an even shorter than usual window to make their next album. Still, they managed to reconvene with Dave Cobb in Nashville, delivering their fifth long-player, Hollow Bones, just a few months into the 2016 tour. Although the album felt a little truncated, highlights included the hard-charging

“Thundering Voices,” the poignant and punishing “Fade Out,” the mercurial and melismatic “Hollow Bones Pt. 2” and an incendiary version of the Ike & Tina Turner/Humble Pie classic, “Black Coffee.”

Once the Sabbath tour concluded they were able to catch their collective breath. With their Earache contract expired, the Sons’ immediately signed with Dave Cobb’s Atlantic Records imprint, Low Country Sound. This time, they decided to change up their routine, taking some time creating their next record. Jay and Scott hunkered down in a rustic cabin in the Tennessee woods and bounced song ideas off each other. Returning to civilization, specifically Nashville’s legendary RCA studio A, they got down to business and recorded Feral Roots.

Consequently, the album, which arrived in January 2019, felt like a cosmic exhale. Switching up their recording routine was a gamble that paid off almost immediately. Upon release it earned the usual critical hosannas and became their fasting selling album to date. The first single, “Do Your Worst” debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs chart and the album reached the Top 10 in Germany, Scotland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and even here in the U.S. By the end of the year, Rival Sons had garnered two Grammy nominations, for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance.

Of course, Covid hit in early 2020. Like most of the world, these perennial road dogs were quickly sidelined. After the the whirlwind of the last decade, the enforced downtime was a blessing in disguise. Allowing the guys to spend substantial, quality time with friends and most importantly, family.

As the pandemic ebbed and flowed, Scott and Jay began sharing song ideas from socially distanced vantage points. When the ideas became full-fledged songs, the band would reconvene with Dave Cobb in Nashville for a week and record. This became the new normal: tinker and create at home, return to Nashville for a week at a time, bringing their vision to fruition. Lather, rinse, repeat, until they had a stockpile of finished songs.

Rather than unleash all 16 songs at once, Rival Sons has made the conscious choice to release two separate, eight-song sets, Darkfighter has finally arrived, its companion album, Lightbringer will be available in the latter half of 2023. Now, the time has (finally) come to dig into the longawaited Darkfighter.

The album opens with the cataclysmic crunch of “Mirrors.” Ecclesiastic keys envelope the melody for nearly a minute before ceding the spotlight to a buzzy, skittering guitars, wily bass lines and a hopscotch-y beat. Jay’s acrobatic yowl somersaults atop the musclebound maelstrom, demanding to be heard. Soul-searching lyrics long to break free from the self-destructive ties that bind; “Take my tongue and wash it so well, dip it in truth for the lies it can tell, take my hands, let them be untied, teach them to build and to provide.” Each verse is shadowed by stratospheric riff-age. When the epiphany arrives; “I lost my sight so slowly, I didn’t know that I was going blind,” it’s accompanied by sugary guitars (to help

the medicine go down) and honeyed keys. On the break, time signatures shift, locking into a modal, tsifteteli groove as Scott unleashes an epic guitar solo that is equal parts fizzy and explosive. It all coalesces on a final transcendent crescendo. The mask, the façade slips away, and the face in the mirror is a face of light, cleansed by a clean, clear truth that hopefully sorts out the wrong from the right.

Typically, Rival Sons will release one or two singles ahead of a new album. But the anticipation was so great for this one, that the band ended up unspooling four singles in the run-up to Darkfighter. The first one, “Nobody Wants To Die.” throws down the gauntlet, offering a clear indication that the four-piece was adding some bold colors and textures to their sonic palette.

A Punk-tastic piledriver, it’s powered by a jackhammer beat, marauding bass lines, thrashy keys and blitzkrieg guitars. The intensity of Jay’s stentorian delivery is matched by lyrics that chronicle an out-of-control blaze; “It burned north through the county, like a fire’s been known to do, it’s been on your trail, now it’s on your tail and it’s surrounding you, it’s surrounding you,” that’s clearly a metaphor for Covid’s devastating death toll. Miley’s pummeling drum salvo detonates on the break, as Scott executes one of his patented Fuzz-crusted solos, bookended by hairpin keys.

The frenetic amphetamine rush of “Nobody…” was keenly juxtaposed by the more broody second single, “Rapture.” A thundering backbeat connects with prowling bass lines, fluttery mellotron hues and guitars that squall and shimmer. Jay’s ethereal croon reaches the rafters as lyrics yearn for a salvation that splits the difference between the sacred and profane; “Let my heart dance its way out of my chest, to sing its freedom, that’s where I long to be, in creation howling with rage/ Singing rapture, rapture, sing it loud I do believe, I’m becoming, I’m becoming what I’m meant to be/Sing it loud, I do believe I’m becoming, I’m becoming what I’m meant to be.” Scott cuts loose on the break, ripping a swirly Psychedelic solo just before Jay’s sanctified howl crosses the Rubicon.

With third single, “Bird In The Hand,” the Sons successfully navigate yet another stylistic shift. Opening with a rattlesnake shake, jangly acoustic notes partner with jagged electric riffs, tensile bass, crushed velvet keys and a walloping beat on this stompy minuet. Jay’s playful mien belies ruminative lyrics that long for reinvention; “When you think there’s no place left for you to go, that’s when you cling to the devil you know and you know/Let’s go down to the river, where the water runs still and deep, scatter the ashes of the mess I used to be, drink till there’s nothing left, lay on the shore and take in a good deep breath, shapes in the sand, warm sun shining through the leaves, a bird in the hand, now that’s a miracle I can believe.” The personal veers toward political as the second verse cryptically alludes to both the puppets and puppeteers sowing dissent and discontent, fomenting distrust; “There are rats in the silos drowning themselves in your sorrows, you can have your cake and eat it too, now that the wall’s too thick to chew your way out through, out through, out through.” Sparkly guitar and tingling percussive fillips sidle across the bridge, just ahead of Scott’s scorchy solo which shapeshifts from barbed bottleneck to buoyant banjo, to salty and sitar-iffic in just under a couple of minutes. Magnificently hooky, it powers down with defiant aplomb.

As much as The Pixies pioneered and Nirvana then popularized the loud-quiet-loud dynamic, Rival Sons recalibrate it on their fourth single “Guillotine.” Static, scuzzy guitar riffs collide with serpentine keys, brawny bass and a staccato beat. Jay’s vocals swivel from spookily sepulchral on verse to rhapsodic on the chorus. Dense and majestic, the instrumentation pulses and twitches, ratcheting the tension with each chord change. Deep in the belly of the beast, opaque lyrics

conjure images of good and evil that test society’s collective mettle; “The closer you get to the edge, there might be demons where your path used to be, so are you gonna fight, or are you gonna fly back to your mama for some sympathy?”

Apocalyptic verses are leavened by a beatific chorus; “Am I closer to heaven or closer to hell, the deeper I go, it’s harder to tell.” The entire enterprise downshifts on the bridge, wallowing in the sludgy quagmire, until Scott’s quicksilver licks kick and claw, spark and squall, hurtling back toward the light. By the shivery coda, the listener is spent, yet satiated.

Meanwhile, “Bright Light” seems to turn an corner, trading angst for optimism. Scott’s filigreed fretwork lattices lithe bass lines, burnished keys and a hi-hat kick. Chiming acoustic licks anticipate an anthemic chorus, that is shot-through with grace and gratitude; “Bright is the light that I see, the ship will come to me, out to rescue me, here comes the one that I know, the flag is waving high, I can see it with blue eyes.” Miley and Scott team up on the break, as a drum fusillade wraps around distorto power chords that strafe across the shuddery arrangement.

The final two tracks, “Horse’s Breath” and “Darkside” deliver a potent one-two punch. The former opens with a wash of malevolent keys and shards of sinewy feedback. Rather swiftly, the action accelerates, sleek guitars and coltish bass are tethered to a breakneck beat. Cloaked by this musical arsenal, Jay slips into full-throated war cry mode as he tries to outrun his demons; “And the miles left on the road are slow and long, and the end is still too far to see/And the hand that reaches out to comfort me says it’s too late, too late to turn around, it says it’s too late to turn around.” Guitars phase and flange between verses, riding roughshod over a twitchy tribal tattoo. By the instrumental break, a scabrous guitar solo rushes headlong into the breach pounding hell for leather.

The intro to the latter is a thick slab of bonecrushing heaviosity. A stinging note of feedback is quickly devoured by a bludgeoning beat. But almost immediately the arrangement pares back to just Jay and rippling acoustic guitar chords. The feeling of emotional impotence is palpable, as he uncoils a heartbreakingly personal, yet universal story. Employing his tenderest croon, he addresses a lifelong friend and family man caught in the crosshairs of a prescribed opiate; “Something’s keeping you awake at night, losing focus when you need to count your flock…there are no promises to keep anymore, now that you’ve gone to the darkside” The volcanic instrumentation simply erupts following the chorus. The battering ram beat, blistering guitars, caustic keys and vinegary bass alchemize, before winnowing down to just willowy guitar and voice. And so it goes, ebbing and flowing, crashing and retreating, until the abyss of addiction proves fatal. Part cautionary tale, part restless farewell, it’s a breathtaking finish to a watershed effort.

The band have begun a new chapter with this record. Cinematic melodies toggle between technicolor arrangements and monochromatic moods. Lyrically, the songs have never been so existential or introspective. In this era of perfectly curated playlists, and algorithm’d jams- that take the guess-work (and the serendipitous joy) out of discovering your next favorite band, song or solo, Rival Sons consistently deliver. Darkfighter is cutting and sublime, a distillation of all that’s come before, with just enough surprises to keep us on our toes. Play it now, play it LOUD, play it again. At least until Lightbringer arrives.

SEABØRN COCKTAILS BY THE SEASHORE THE VINO VOICE

Even with all of the seltzers and ready-todrink can cocktails flooding the market, there are always a few standouts. I’m not a big a fan of either—but, I’ve just sampled a few of the Seaborn Margarita Cocktails and I found them to be delicious. They are not on the sweet side at all, and the fruit flavors are interesting and inventive.

I understand that Ralphs Market over in Indio has had this product on their shelves for some time. We recently received some samples over at our Palm Springs location and that’s when we tried them out. And this is what we learned:

Crafted in San Diego, California, Seaborn celebrates their passion for the lifestyle that surrounds the sea with their love of sharing good times and great cocktails. They set out to create modern, better tasting ready-to-drink cocktails inspired by the classics. Seaborn hard agave cocktails are made with organic cane sugar and all natural ingredients. Their new craft Margarita is a refreshing cocktail with authentic south of the border flavor.

Of interest for a lot of folks is what’s all this “agave” product that we see in a lot of new alcoholic beverages? We tequila drinkers already know a bit about the agave plant; but products derived from the agave plant can be found in several business branches, such as medicine, food, fuel, cleaning, cosmetics and recycling

Although agave is most often associated with tequila, the plant has been used to make alcoholic drinks in Mexico for thousands of years. Agave is the term used to describe spirits such as tequila, mezcal, and other lesserknown varieties which are distilled from any species of the agave plant. The agave plant is a flowering succulent, indigenous to Central Mexico which also yields byproducts such as binding agents and sweeteners.

Agave, also known as maguey, was considered sacred by many Mesoamerican civilizations. Pulque, a milky beverage made from the fermented sap of the plant, dates to at least 2000 BC, and in the 16th century, Spanish conquistadors likely introduced distillation methods for turning agave into mezcal. Tequila, a type of mezcal derived from blue Weber agave, was first commercially distilled by the famous Cuervo family in 1758 but blue Weber is just one of hundreds of species of agave. Agave, which some folks call “agave wine” is very similar to tequila since they derive from the same plant, but agave wine contains much lower alcohol content. This means agave wine has identical flavors but not as strong of an alcohol taste to it.

The Seaborn Agave is organic Blue Agave

that is sustainably farmed and fermented by a family-owned and most award-winning distillery in the heart of Jalisco, Mexico in the city of Tequila. Their cocktails are sweetened with organic monk fruit extract and organic cane sugar for the perfect balance of sweetness. Seaborn does not use any artificial sweeteners or ingredients.

The PR on their website, seaborncocktails. com particularly states: We only use the best quality organic and natural ingredients to give our Margaritas a refreshing and authentic south of the border flavor.

Here are a few quick reviews of the Margarita line-up according to their website:

The Strawberry Hibiscus Margarita smells of fresh strawberries, with subtle hints of watermelon and flowers with herbaceous undertones. A full blast of ripe strawberry, melon, lime and, of course, hibiscus. Once again transported to Mexico: it’s jamaica.

The Coconut Lime Margarita has an elegant, faint coconut with a hint of tropical spice. An explosion of freshly cut coconut, followed by mint, lime skin, and a fresh sugarcane sweetness that rounds-out the experience; nuances of fresh mint leaf linger in the best of ways.

The Passion (Orange) Guava Margarita immediately transports you to Hawaii—in a seamless succession, smells of passion fruit with subtle citrus and crushed guava. A blast of guava and citrus with subtle candied elements that are washed over by pure, ripe aromas.

The Pineapple Mint Margarita embodies seductive aromas of newly cut pineapple and fresh-picked mint leaves. Fresh, supple layers of fresh pineapple and mint, the balance and length are striking: close to perfection.

A fun aspect to their website showcases a few of the sport celebrities that exemplify the spirit of Seaborn:

“Lindsay Perry is a true renaissance woman. From surfing, modeling, singing and songwriting to being a content creator for global brands like Billabong, RVCA and Sony, Lindsay is a creative force. We had the opportunity to catch up with her and talk about life as a musician and creative director along with her latest endeavor and design studio called Distinctive Noise.”

“From pioneering huge barrels at the Wedge in Newport to launching Kelly Slater’s professional surfing career, Danny Kwock is a bona fide living legend. DK was at the forefront during Quiksilver USA’s early beginnings— shaping and guiding the company into the mega brand it is today. An instrumental force within the action sports industry and beyond, DK’s creative presence and influence will be felt for many years to come.”

Cheers!

PET PL ACE TRAINING TIPS FROM VALERIE MASI

1. PLAN AHEAD – Everyone in the household needs to be on board with adopting a new canine family member. Decide on some basic rules ahead of time. Do some research on various breeds. Mix breeds are more likely to have fewer health problems. Does a small, medium, or large dog best meet your housing situation? Puppies require extra time, activities, and potty training. Where will the dog sleep? Is your dog going to be allowed on the furniture? There may be an initial honeymoon period, and issues can appear later.

2. DOGS WANT STRUCTURE – Dogs thrive on consistency and structure, and everyone in the home needs to stick to the same rules. If you have ever had a dog in a training class, you see how avidly they pay attention to the trainer and enjoy every exercise. Daily structured walks help drain your pup’s energy in a productive way. A regular feeding schedule and potty breaks helps with house training. Involve everyone including children in the animal’s care. Teach your dog that calm behavior gets the most attention.

3. EXERCISE – Just like us, dogs need physical exercise and mental stimulation. Daily walks are essential. A game of fetch in the back yard is great fun. Tell your dog to sit and stay before you throw the ball and shout “fetch” for him to bring it back and drop for you to toss again. This adds structure to a game of fetch and creates more fun. If you have an only dog, arrange a play date with a friend’s dog. Pet stores carry creative toys that hide treats and create a challenge for Fido.

hours during the day. Initial success can be rewarded with treats but keep treats to a minimum later.

6. SEPERATION ANXIETY – This is often an issue when people return to the office after working at home. Begin by leaving the dog alone for short periods of time, then gradually extend the hours you are away. You may want to have a friend come by and walk Fido midday or take advantage of a doggie day care program.

7. CHEWING – Puppy proof your home before the new canine arrives. Don’t leave your designer shoes in the hallway. Don’t ever use old slippers or socks as toys…Dogs don’t know the difference. Bitter Apple spray from a pet store is a good deterrent to protect your valuables. Pupsicles frozen in small yogurt containers from salt free chicken bullion and kibble can occupy them. Also good are hard rubber kongs with a dab of peanut butter inside and Dinosaur Nyla bones.

Valerie Masi, owner and operator of Best Paw Forward, is one of the most outstanding dog trainers in Southern California. She can handle any size dog with any issue, but her passion is helping dogs who have suffered mistreatment. In addition to certification from the program at National K-9 School of Dog training, Valerie earned a degree in Exotic Animal Training and Management at Moorpark College. With over 35 years of experience, she has solved just about every training problem imaginable. She now has a part time

contract with Loving All Animals to provide training to their volunteers, foster parents, staff, and shelter dogs. She helps owners of newly adopted pups to ensure success.

Getting a new dog is an exciting adventure, but it is more fun when you know how to train. My recent discussion with Val included the following training tips. If you follow these steps you will have a social, well-behaved and balanced dog that you can take everywhere, one that will be welcome in public, and one you can enjoy having by your side.

4. DAILY WALKS – This is a great way for both of you to exercise and meet new people in your neighborhood. Keep your dog in a “heel position” close to your side for the first part of the walk. At the walk’s halfway point, release him from the firm heel position so he can explore and smell the flowers along the route. Keep him leashed as a dog should always respect the end of the leash for your and their safety. (Instructions for leash walking can be found online, though Val cautions on relying exclusively on online information for a well-trained pup).

5. HOUSE TRAINING – Puppies pee and poop quite often. Val does not recommend puppy pads as this trains them to go indoors, so they need frequent trips outside. A large crate may be used during your quick trips for errands. Puppies can be crated overnight, but never for more than 2-3 hours during the day. Adult dogs can be crated for 4

8. GUESTS – Train them not to jump on people arriving by practicing with you. When they jump on you, move forward into the dog. If you turn your back you are giving them an invitation to be dominant. It’s natural for dogs to bark when people enter their property but becomes annoying if they continue. Sound devices work with only some dogs. Be careful with spray bottles, and do not spray a stream in their face.

Valerie advises, “Dogs use their bodies to communicate. They tell us many things if we carefully observe them. There is no cookie cutter approach to training. However, there is a distinction between the old fashion methods that incorrectly used punishment. In the past it was recommended you use a loud scary voice to train, but this can shut down a dog. Use a firm voice. Never hit a dog, but rather utilize positive reinforcement.” Animals reflect the people around them. There is no training problem that can’t be solved with love, skill, and patience.

The latest criminal charges against former President Donald Trump are a continuation of his lifetime of behavior that regularly lands him in court. Over his fifty-year career, Trump has amassed more than 4,000 lawsuits – some as plaintiff and as defendant. That equates to eighty lawsuits a year or one every four to five days…for fifty years!

Let’s review some of the court cases and serious investigations where our Plaintiffin-Chief is currently Defendant-In-Chief. While everyone is innocent until being proven guilty, where you find thousands of smoke clouds, there must be more than a few hundred fires – particularly when you consider that the pyromaniac has admitted to starting many of them.

• Taking top secret documents from the White House and failing to relinquish control when asked for the return of those documents. This 37-count indictment comes solely from his behavior and efforts not to comply with the law.

• Fraudulent business practices. Trump structured hush money (aka extortion) payments to porn star, Stormy Daniels and two others in the final days of the 2016 Presidential election. Trump had supposedly

multi-level marketing company that paid the President and his family endorsements while in elected office. The fraud is that the family never disclosed that they were paid spokespeople of the company. An additional problem is that none of this was disclosed while serving as President.

• Tenants of rent-controlled properties owned by the Trump family since The Donald was a child are suing for fraud and racketeering. This lawsuit stems from the alleged behavior of overcharging for appliances to offset the limits of rent control laws. The Trump family has a history of issues with low-income rental properties in New York City dating back to 1973.

Additoinal charges now face member of the Trump family.

been playing bridge or something with Stormy while Melania was pregnant with Baron. As a reminder, Trump has faced numerous sexual misconduct cases between 1970 and 2005 including one with Jeffrey Epstein, a close friend of his in the late 80s and early 90s.

• Fraudulently overstating the values of properties to defraud banks to get larger loans under better terms. The same behavior has been used to overstate donations and avoid taxation.

• Class action lawsuit related to ACN, a

• Numerous lawsuits related to the events of January 6, 2020.

• Numerous lawsuits and investigations into efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

• While not yet in the courts, the Justice Department is looking into stock trades and other communications that took place in the Special Purpose vehicle (SPAC) that was meant to launch Truth Social as a rival to Twitter.

We should not forget recent lawsuits that are now settled:

• Trump Organization found guilty of tax fraud landing the long-time CFO in jail.

FATHER’S DAY: A GIFT FOR DAD VS A GIFT FROM DAD

actor Paul Walker of Fast and Furious fame. While on his way home he was killed in a car accident on November 30, 2013. His death, and what he did or did not do, can teach us a few things about estate planning.

As most of my readers know from previous articles, a Revocable Living Trust, like the one Walker had, is an important component of an estate plan. Most attorneys use a trust as the primary estate planning vehicle, as it is a good way to manage assets during life and death. At death, it allows for privacy by avoiding the normal public process of Probate.

Father’s Day is this Sunday. Who says only dads get gifts? They can also give the best gift ever… after reading this. Unfortunately, MANY FATHERS DON’T PLAN TO FAIL, THEY FAIL TO PLAN. The best gift you can give to dad, is encouraging him to plan ahead for the family, and to make an Estate Plan. This is especially true with Covid still lingering. All of us have been focused on health for the last few years, and well… SHIT HAPPENS!

It is very common to talk to clients who have a trust, but have never FUNDED it. In that regard we can learn from film and TV

The public is not privy to what is in a Trust document. They cannot open it for inspection, as is the case with a probate, which allows anyone to “check out” your private finances.

However the FUNDING of a trust is necessary to achieve privacy and other related benefits. Walker did not fund his trust completely. Thus he was in the same boat as other famous people who did not have a trust… people like Walt Disney, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, J.P. Morgan and John Rockefeller, to name a few.

Though a trust is a great idea, there are very few benefits if the trust during life is not funded. As a result Walker’s $25 million

Let us not forget Trump University where numerous lawsuits were settled for $25 million. Prior to settling, Trump use of his signature move- counter-suing the plaintiff and using the cost of litigation against them. While it is a very effective technique, the better way to handle all of this is to avoid the behaviors that continually result in the use of the court systems.

The United States has many problems. Having someone of such questionable character in charge should make all of us shudder. There are few people ever to weaponize the court systems like Trump. As we enter a new election cycle, people need to ask themselves if there are better options available than his man. It probably is not President Biden but one of the other contenders. Surely, we can do better as a country than electing a man of Trump’s character to the highest office in the land.

DALEGRIBOWONTHELAW

of assets, were outside the trust. We can substantiate this because those assets outside of his trust will now have to be probated. Thankfully, in Walker’s case, he is protected because he had a “pourover-will”, and thus they go into the trust. Probate’s publicity, and costs, could have been avoided if the assets had been in the trust during his lifetime.

It is just as important to have an Estate Plan when you are young, as it is when you are older. All too often young people, like 40 year old Paul Walker, can die both from natural causes and from accidents. Walker should have had more than half his life ahead of him. But as we have all seen with our own family and friends, life does not always work out the way we expect. Many of us have lost family and friends over the last few years from Covid and other maladies. All too often People don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan! However Walker thankfully was wise in that he had planned ahead and secured an estate plan.

Many young people take the approach “I do not have an estate”. The good news is that whoever you are, and however old you are, and regardless of how little or how much money or other assets you have,

YOU DO HAVE AN ESTATE. The BAD news is that, unless you take the time to ensure that both you and what you have is safely monitored, your community estate could be a mess.

Walker was a well-known film and television star, and he thought of others by planning his estate. Every reader should put this Coachella Valley Weekly down and consider an estate plan and filing a health care directive with Eisenhower or Desert Regional….today. A health care directive is VERY INEXPENSIVE, so call us today for direction.

DEATH-DEFYING BICYCLE RIDE FOR “ST. JUDE’S CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL”

Even before you get to the top, the time should always be right now when it comes to giving back to others.

The expression, “pay if forward” has circulated for decades. There are those in life who generally wish for the success of others, and are willing to assist in any way that they are able. Sadly, there are those who do not. If you find yourself in the category of those who do wish well for others then this article will inspire a little more joy to your morning, afternoon, or evening.

For many of our local resident’s, KINETIX HEALTH AND PERFORMANCE CENTER has been a staple of their desert dwelling diets. If you wake up bright and early in the morning, catch a glance of yourself in the mirror and think, “today is the day I want to feel great and get healthy”, there is no need to go anywhere other than Kinetix Health and Performance Center in Palm Desert.

Michael K. Butler, owner of Kinetix Health and Performance Center, has applied his passion, and God-given talent of wanting to help heal others for several decades. Michael has accomplished this time and time again, as evident by Kinetix Health and Performance Center’s longstanding reputation as the valley’s beacon of hope when it comes to all attributes, fitness, and rehabilitation.

Aside from running the day-to-day operations of the valley’s premier fitness center, Michael performs ART (Active Release Therapy) aiding clients suffering from pain or sports related injuries. Over the years, Michael has assisted many celebrity

Kinetix Health and Performance Center is a multi-faceted fitness hub pact with all the latest and greatest fitness and exercise equipment, as well as the valley’s leading cryotherapy (containing nitrogen), infrared sauna, personal training experts, and a slew of other health boosting related therapieswhich will be covered in the months to come.

One of Michael’s favorite pastimes aside from his involvement with Kinetix, is bicycling. Will Michael one day compete in Le Tour De France? My estimate is that if he ever were to compete, he would place extremely well due to his years of proper exercise and recovery, as well as wholesome diet, and other healthy lifestyle engagements.

Le Tour De France is undoubtedly a big name, and a big game for those who compete professionally. The recognition obtained is something to be desired. However, the recognition of Michael’s involvement in an upcoming bicycling event will offer far more than personal accolades. The race will be utilized as a means for raising funds for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital

As many of you may already are aware, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital is a pediatric treatment research facility. It was established by entertainer Danny Thomas in 1962 and is a 501 3 (c) designated nonprofit medical corporation. The primary focus of St. Jude’s is children’s catastrophic diseases such as leukemia and other cancers.

Mauna Kea is a volcano that stands

amidst Hawaii’s Big Island. Scaling 13,880 feet, when measured from the bottom of the ocean to Mauna Kea’s peak, it is the tallest peak in the world.

Michael will be attempting to ride a gravel bike up the volcano - and coming from below sea level in Palm Desert, this will be no easy feat. The most he has ever climbed in a single day was 15,000 ft, yet its elevation was 8800 ft.

In four months of fundraising, Michael has raised more than $11,000 for St. Jude’s. Last year, a team of four, including Michael performed in the infamous Race Across The West - a two and a half day cycling challenge from Oceanside, CA to Durango, Colorado. Michael went without sleep, and traversed 40,000 ft of climbing. He and his team won

FATHERS, ROLE MODELS AND AUTHORITY!

AFathers Day Tribute…

In recent studies, Psychology

Today has found that “children who have an involved father are more likely to be emotionally secure, be confident to explore their surroundings, and, as they grow older, have better social connections.”

Numerous studies find that an active and nurturing style of fathering is associated with better verbal skills, intellectual functioning, and academic achievement among adolescents.”

Basically, children who have involved fathers are more likely to be healthy emotionally, socially, and intellectually. Even when children face crises, having an involved father helps children regulate their behavior and feelings better than children whose fathers are absent.

I remember when I first made fire chief. Those ‘have to’ things that came with the position made me cringe. City Council meetings, staff meetings, chiefs’ meetings, Mayor’s prayer breakfasts, Rotary and Kiwanis Club meetings — the list of “have to do” seemed endless.

I felt animosity toward my city manager. After all, he was directing me to do these things. After wrestling with my feelings, I learned it wasn’t the city manager I was upset with — it was my father!

How do those two things go together, you ask? When I was younger, my father put a lot of “have to” things on me: yard work, house chores, homework, school, sports, working

for his business. It felt I was being nagged all the time. The situation with my city manager triggered those feelings again.

Oh, did I mention I had to go to church and Bible school every weekend? At church, it was reinforced that I had to submit to my father: “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right” (Ephesians 6:1).

Interestingly, the Bible also instructs us to obey the government: “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities” (Romans 13:1). The Bible is clear that all human authority is established by God; therefore, it demands our respect and obedience.

So where am I going with this? As Father’s Day approaches, it may be helpful to examine how our earliest experiences with authority can shape our professional relationships. As a new chief, I chafed under the direction of my city manager because it reminded me of

having to submit to my father’s authority. Could similar factors be influencing your interactions?

Have you ever felt defiant toward your superiors at work? Do you have a subordinate who seems to defy any policy or directive from you or management? How about those community members who are professional critics at city council meetings, distastefully chewing on any department head, city manager or council member — I wonder if they have authority issues?

It’s natural for humans to want to rule ourselves. Our point of view seems right, while being required to submit to a government, a parent or a supervisor feels humiliating. But of course, that submission is a necessary and good thing too.

So, what should we do about our natural problem with authority?

First, resolve to respect those in positions of authority — whether it is your boss or your father. Don’t get me wrong, respect doesn’t mean blind obedience. We see countless examples of abuse or misuse of authority every day, and we’re obligated to stand up against them. But simply respecting authority figures for what they represent is a conscious way to push back against our natural resistance to submission.

Second, learn to trust authority. Trust me, it is good that they run the department or organization. It’s not easy, and most leaders are under a tremendous amount of stress that most of us wouldn’t want. Though we

are quick to armchair-quarterback their efforts, many of us lack the wisdom, power, knowledge, and courage to step up and lead. Until you’ve done it, stand down on being that critic.

Being in the fire service provided me with many role models such as senior firefighters to my captains. Though not my father, they certainly taught me many things as well. It too felt like I was being nagged. But my dad and those people, who as a new firefighter and as a new chief, actually helped me immensely. I learned discipline, responsibility, and structure. I was pushed to consider different ways of doing things and conducting myself and others with respect. I grew as a person.

So, this Father’s Day, take a minute to thank (or remember) those who held authority over you as a child — and pledge to honor and respect all authority figures. It’s one less thing Dad can nag you about!

I am dedicating this article this week to my dad https://lnkd.in/gDf_NCks

Thank you, Dad, for all those “have to do’s” growing up. At the time I didn’t like it, but today I appreciate and value the way you raised us!

Happy Father’s Day!

COMPELLING REASONS TO GIVE KETO A SERIOUS LOOK VS. OZEMPIC OR OTHER TRENDY WEIGHT LOSS DRUGS

Anew trend right now is to take Ozempic and other similar drugs for quick weight loss. The startling reality behind the “miracle weight loss” is quite different than what you’ve seen online, and you are only hearing one side of the story. Drugs like Ozempic, Mounjaro and Wegovy may possibly be effective for weight loss. But shedding pounds isn’t the only change patients might experience!

These drugs were originally prescribed to patients with Type 2 diabetes as they produce insulin and lower blood sugar. They also release a hormone that slows down digestion and keeps food in the stomach longer. This process suppresses hunger and leads to weight loss — but that can take a toll on the body.

What are the most typical side effects?

The most common side effects of Ozempic, according to the drug’s website, are consistent nausea, stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, and vomiting. Many patients who start these drugs get off them because the side effects do not improve. Constant nausea and abdominal pain are an unpleasant way to live. The stomach and brain are so connected that intestinal issues can lead to stress, anxiety, and depression. Individuals develop anxiety about when and where symptoms will occur. It can also lead to avoidance of social activities, especially ones in which food is the focus, or when bathrooms may not be readily available. The emotional symptoms can in turn worsen the gastrointestinal symptoms creating a vicious cycle.

How Does This Compare to Keto?

When you compare Ozempic to Keto (which offers everything from weight loss, reduced appetite, reduced inflammation, improved heart and brain health, and lower glucose, and more) you have a way to lose weight quick that is healthy and sustainable. The Keto diet is far more than a lose-weight-diet. In fact, it’s more of a lifestyle change, with benefits far outweighing simply looking good in a bathing suit.

As a keto expert and coach, here are a few of my top reasons for giving Keto a serious look for weight loss, health, and lifestyle.

1. Weight Loss & Delicious Foods - Keto and weight loss have become synonymous. They go together like hand in glove. With keto, weight loss is real and effective for one simple reason: it helps people convert from a carb-burning diet to a fat-burning diet. When you eat a diet high in carbs expect bloating, weight gain, and poor health. On the other hand, a high-fat, moderateprotein, and very low carb diet severely reduces your appetite, allows you to eat until you’re satiated, and burns fat from your body for energy.

The best part? You don’t have to starve yourself to get there. On a keto diet, you get to eat your fill of delicious and satisfying foods loaded with good healthy fats, which triggers ketosis. Once your body is consistently in ketosis this leads to increased energy, reduces appetite, eliminates brain fog and joint pain.

2. Reduced Appetite - Imagine not feeling those food crashes and carb cravings. That’s the keto life. You eat, then you’re satisfied…for a long time! Once your body has settled into the diet, it works more efficiently, so you aren’t embarking on the wild ride that is the highs and lows of a carb/sugar laden diet. Without the sugar peaks and crashes, cravings disappear, and you feel satisfied.

3. Inflammation - Inflammation is the body’s natural immune response to help heal and fight infection. But too much and persistent inflammation can cause pain, joint stiffness, swelling, fatigue, and more. Ketosis is a strong anti-inflammatory chemical.

Another anti-inflammatory influence is the ketogenic diet itself; the keto diet helps promote the consumption of anti-inflammatory foods,

such as eggs, olive oil, coconut oil, avocados, and other foods high in omega-3s.

4. Diabetes & Blood Sugar Control - Since you eliminate sugar and most carbohydrates on a keto diet, it’s not hard to understand why it’s great for blood-sugar control. The less sugar and carbs you eat, the less sugar in your bloodstream. Therefore, after starting a keto diet, most people will notice a decrease in their blood sugar almost immediately. In fact, the effects are so immediate, it’s recommended that diabetics beginning a ketogenic diet work with their health care provider so they can adjust their medication as needed.

5. Heart Health - The term “heart health” conjures images of little heart icon that appears on whole grains and cereals and promotes carbs/low-fat foods. But, in fact, a diet low in carbohydrates and higher in healthy fats has been shown to drastically improve the biomarkers associated with heart disease.

6. Brain Health - The brain loves keto just as much as the heart. The Keto diet has begun to be studied as complementary intervention for various neurological disorders. And while many scientists within the neurological field state that the brain prefers glucose over ketones, the brain does over time (with age) lose its ability to efficiently fuel itself with glucose alone. This is where ketones come into play.

Ketones have been shown to increase mitochondrial efficiency and production, which helps to protect brain cells from strokes and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Bottom line: the ketogenic diet has significant health benefits in a variety of areas, from metabolic health to heart and brain health, and more. As studies continue and more is understood about the body’s reaction to the ketogenic diet and how it can be leveraged for a variety of wellness initiatives, there will surely be more discoveries of the benefits of the high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carb ketogenic lifestyle. Regardless, always check with a dietitian or your primary care physician before making dramatic dietary changes.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Aries-born Vincent van Gogh’s painting Potato Eaters shows five people in a dark room barely illuminated by lamplight. Seated around a small table, they use their hands to eat food they have grown themselves. Vincent wanted to convey the idea that they “dug the earth with the very hands they put into their bowls.” I don’t expect you to do anything quite so spectacularly earthy in the coming weeks, Aries, but I would love to see you get very up close and personal with nature. I’d also love to see you learn more about where the fundamental things in your life originate. Bonus points if you seek adventures to bolster your foundations and commune with your roots.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Renowned Mexican artist Diego Rivera emerged from his mother’s womb in 1886. But some observers suggest that Rivera’s soul was born in 1920: a pivotal time when he found his true calling as an artist. During a visit to Italy, as he gazed at the murals of 15th-century mural painters, “he found the inspiration for a new and revolutionary public art capable of furthering the ideals of the ongoing revolution in his native land.” (In the words of art historian Linda Downs.) I will be extra dramatic and speculate that you may have a comparable experience in the coming months, dear Taurus: a rebirth of your soul that awakens vigorous visions of what your future life can be.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Among her many jobs, my triple Gemini friend Alicia has worked as a deep-sea rescue diver, an environmental activist, a singer in a band, a dog food taster, an art teacher for kids, and a volunteer at a sleep lab researching the nature of dreams. Do I wonder if she would be wise to commit herself to one occupation? Not really. I respect her decision to honor her ever-shifting passions. But if there will ever come a time when she will experiment with a bit more stability and constancy, it may come during the next 11 months. You Geminis are scheduled to engage in deep ruminations about the undiscovered potentials of regularity, perseverance, and commitment.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): As religious sects go, the Shakers are the most benign. Since their origin in the 18th century, they have had as many women as men in leadership roles. They practice pacifism, disavow consumerism, and don’t try to impose their principles on others. Their worship services feature dancing as well as singing. I’m not suggesting you become a Shaker, Cancerian, but I do hope that in the coming months, you will place a premium on associating with noble groups whose high ideals are closely aligned with your own. It’s time to build and nurture your best possible network.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): For years, Mario A. Zacchini worked at a circus as a “human cannonball.” On thousands of occasions, he was shot out of a cannon at 90 miles per hour. “Flying isn’t the hard part,” he testified. “Landing in the net is.” His work might sound dangerous, but he lived to age 87. Let’s make Mario your role model for a while, Leo. I hope he will inspire you to be both adventurous and safe, daring but prudent. I trust you will seek exhilarating fun even as you insist on getting soft landings.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): One of my favorite astrology teachers, Stephen Arroyo, notes, “Most people have a strong opinion about astrology, usually quite extreme, even though 95 percent have never studied it whatsoever.” Of course, astrology is not the only subject about which people spout superficial ideas based on scant research. Viral epidemiology is another example. Anyway, Virgo, I am asking you to work hard to avoid this behavior during the rest of 2023. Of all the zodiac signs, you have the greatest potential to express thoughtful ideas based on actual evidence. Be a role model for the rest of us! Show us what it means to have articulate, wellinformed opinions.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Meditation teacher Cheri Huber wrote a book called Be the Person You Want to Find. This would be an excellent title for your life story during the next ten months. I hope you will soon ruminate on how to carry out

WEEK OF JUNE 15

such a quest. Here are two suggestions. 1. Make a list of qualities you yearn to experience in a dear ally and brainstorm about how to cultivate those qualities in yourself. 2. Name three highintegrity people you admire. Meditate on how you could be more like them in ways that are aligned with your life goals.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Now is a good time to take stock of how you have fared in the Dating and Mating Games through the years. Why? Because you are entering a new chapter of your personal Love Story. The next two years will bring rich opportunities to outgrow stale relationship patterns and derive rich benefits from novel lessons in intimacy. An excellent way to prepare is to meditate on the history of your togetherness. PS: The term “fate bait” refers to an influence that draws you toward the next turning point of your necessary destiny. Be alert for fate bait.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Sagittarian actor Samuel Jackson loves the color purple. He insists on it being featured in his films, and he often wears purple outfits. In Black Snake Moan, he plays a purple Gibson guitar. In the animated movie, Turbo, he voices the role of a purple racing snail. In his Star Wars appearances, he wields a purple light saber. Now I am endorsing his obsession for your use. Why? First, it’s an excellent time to home in on exactly what you want and ask for exactly what you want. Second, now is a favorable phase to emphasize purple in your own adventures. Astrologers say purple is your ruling color. It stimulates your natural affinity for abundance, expansiveness, and openness.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): People who understand the creative process say it’s often wise to stay mum about your in-progress work. You may diminish the potency of your projects if you blab about them while they’re still underway. I don’t think that’s true for all creative efforts. For example, if we collaborate with partners on an artistic project or business venture, we must communicate well with them. However, I do suspect the transformative efforts you are currently involved in will benefit from at least some secrecy for now. Cultivate the privacy necessary to usher your masterpiece to further ripeness.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Musician Frank Zappa (1940–1993) was a freaky rebel, iconoclastic weirdo, and virtuoso experimenter. Everything normal and ordinary was boring to him. He aspired to transcend all categories. And yet he refrained from taking psychedelic drugs and urged his fans to do the same. He said, “We repudiate any substances, vehicles, or procedures which might reduce the body, mind, or spirit of an individual to a state of subawareness or insensitivity.” Zappa might have added that some substances temporarily have a pleasing effect but ultimately diminish the life force. In my estimation, Aquarius, the coming weeks will be an excellent time to re-evaluate your relationship with influences that weaken the vitality of your body, mind, or spirit. It will also be a favorable period to seek new modes of lasting liberation.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): If you are at a festival or fair where you could win a lot of money by smashing watermelons with your head, I hope you won’t do it. Same if you imagine you could impress a potential lover by eating 25 eggs in three minutes: Please don’t. Likewise, I beg you not to let yourself be manipulated or abused by anyone for any reason. These days, it’s crucial not to believe you can succeed by doing things that would hurt or demean or diminish you. For the foreseeable future, you will be wise to show what you do best and express your highest values. That’s the most effective way to get what you want.

Struggling with wanting to lose belly fat but not sure how? Trust me you are not alone. There are many people struggling for years to get rid of it.

Belly Fat vs Visceral Fat. What is the difference? Belly fat is the fat that appears around the abdominal area. Visceral fat is fat that surrounds your organs and raises the risk for heart disease. There are some Body Scans that can accurately measure your Visceral Fat.

Too much belly fat is associated with a variety of negative health issues. For men, that excess abdominal fat can impact urological health. For both men and

women, excess abdominal fat can raise your risk for heart disease.

There are several reasons that could explain the presence of belly fat:

1. Foods high in sugar and saturated fat

2. Decreased estrogen in women

3. Age

4. Alcohol consumption.

However, all these factors don’t mean tha getting rid of belly fat is something that is impossible. Understand that by changing your lifestyle, increasing physical activity and eating healthier food, you might be able to achieve losing stomach fat at any age.
