WE ARE NOT ALONE: THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE Contact in the Desert returns to Joshua Tree June 3-6, 2016

T

he multi-day conference is designed around an immersive, experiential environment with leading scholars from around the world as well as a few media personalities that add to the serious nature of the event. What was once considered “conspiracy” has recently turned Presidential.

Senator Hillary Clinton is talking about UFO’s and aliens on the campaign trail as she pushes for a platform of disclosure. Earlier this year while talking with Jimmy Kimmel, she said there is a new name for UFO’s; the new term is UAP or “unexplained aerial phenomenon.”

President Obama may have been the first President to publicly acknowledge Area 51, the remote detachment of a U.S. Air Force facility in Nevada adjacent to the “Extraterrestrial Highway.” Although the base has never been classified as a “secret base,” all research and activity in Area 51 are considered “Top Secret.” Former President Bill Clinton said on the Jimmy Kimmel show he looked at Area 51 and “no aliens there.”

When President Obama was on the show, he said President Clinton’s answer (no aliens there) is “what we are instructed to say,” adding, “I can’t reveal anything.” Clinton later said he looked at Roswell and while he never said much about that famous site, he did say he wouldn’t be surprised “if we were “visited” someday” and that he hoped it wouldn’t be like the movie Independence Day adding that it might be the only way to unite our incredibly divided world.

John Podesta, a senior advisor to President Clinton, President Obama and now Hillary Clinton, tweeted out a comment on February 13, 2015 that his “biggest failure of 2014: Once again not securing the #disclosure of the UFO files.” Hillary Clinton stated on Jimmy Kimmel that provided there aren’t any threats to national security that she will open the files on the subject. This seems to be an interesting and daring stance for a presidential candidate unless she has

some degree of certainty. Given her roles as First Lady, Senator and Secretary of State, she might have more insight than most.

During a 2007 election campaign debate, Congressman Dennis Kucinich was asked on MSNBC if Shirley MacLaine’s account of him seeing a UFO was true. He acknowledged that it was and after some laughter from the audience clarified that it was an “unidentifiable flying object.” He also added that Jimmy Carter claimed to see a UFO and he was moving his campaign offices to Roswell, NM, the site of a notoriously rumored UFO crash. Now, it seems the political landscape and the American conscious is more open to such discussions. Contact in the Desert has always provided a platform for the serious study and inquiry into ancient astronauts, extraterrestrial life, human origins, crop circles, contact experiences, of course, UFO sightings and most importantly, the need to know, or disclose existing knowledge to the public.

JOHN GREENEWALD John Greenewald, Jr. began researching the secret inner workings of the U.S. Government at the young age of fifteen.

He targeted such groups as the CIA, FBI, Pentagon, Air Force, Army, Navy, NSA, DIA, and countless others. Greenewald utilized the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to gain access to thousands of records. The Desert Rose Playhouse to present David Dillon’s PARTY

T

he Desert Rose Playhouse, the Valley’s LGBT stage company, will present David Dillon’s smash hit Off-Broadway Comedy, PARTY, opening Friday, June 24, 2016 for a six-week run.

Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 2 PM, through July 31, 2016.

The wildly popular comedy depicts a group of gay men getting together for their regular evening of drinks and games. Tonite, the game is a gay version of “Truth or Dare” called “Fact, Fiction or Fantasy”. True life stories are shared, fictional encounters related and fantasies often require the player to remove his clothing. By the end of the evening, everyone is nude and laughing together in a great show of brotherhood.

Playwright Dillon says, “PARTY is not about flesh, but celebrates the fact that, as a

group, we are positive and honest about our sexuality and free from a lot of the inhibitions and hang ups that exist in other groups.”

The play opened for a five-week run in Chicago that turned into a twoyear engagement, followed by a hugely successful Off-Broadway production in

New York and subsequent productions in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New Orleans, London, Ft. Lauderdale, etc. This production is the Coachella Valley debut of PARTY. L.A. DJ DUO BIXEL BOYS MAKING A SPLASH IN THE DESERT

A

new DJ duo is dominating the Los Angeles music and fashion scene, and they’re heading to the Coachella Valley next week. The Bixel Boys, Ian Macpherson (29) and Rob May (31), are Splash House veterans – but this year, they’re running their own stage all weekend long. Splash House, the popular poolside music festival, is returning to Palm Springs June 10-12 and will be hosted across the pools of The Riviera and The Saguaro. Make sure to check out the Bixel Boys Freelife Takeover stage at the Tiki pool of the Riviera for an eclectic mix of handpicked DJs each day. Saturday’s set, L.A. Baewatch, will feature a lineup of the hottest female DJ’s in the L.A. scene right now. Sunday’s theme, No Shirt / No Shoes, will offer up a fun and laid back vinyl set reminiscent of a disco party. In the words of the Bixel Boys themselves, their stage is going to feel like one of your best friend’s pool parties, so bust out the inflatable flamingo, grab your sunscreen, and head down to the Tiki Pool to see for yourself.

CV Weekly Entertainment columnist Kaitey Marie sat down with the Bixel Boys in an exclusive interview to catch up before the action: CVW: So, how did you two form Bixel Boys and when?

Rob: We got together about four years ago.

We met each other through mutual friends.

I was producing and Ian was DJing. We both actually had desk jobs at the time. Ian was working in marketing and I was working in video editing. We just met up and started sharing songs, then we had an idea and just kind of went with it!

CVW: Where does the name come from?

Ian: Bixel was actually the street I used to work on. Bixel Boys just had a really unique sound to it, like the kind of name you can type in Google and we’ll be the first thing that pops up.

CVW: How did you get into music scene?

Do you have any formal training?

Rob: Well I always had an interest in music.

I grew up as a drummer, and my brother is a classically trained musician. I actually went to school for directing at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburg. I always have to be learning or doing something new. In the middle of postproduction jobs, I thought ‘Wow, this is really cool, this is what I want to do.’ So I started watching YouTube tutorials for producing.

Ian: In high school I played around with guitar. When I got older I worked as a promoter for a while. I started booking bands and really liked it. DJing was actually a hobby I just enjoyed in my free time, it wasn’t until Rob and

I got together that I really seriously considered it. As far as formal training, I studied graphic design at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. It ended up coming in handy because I designed our Freelife logo and we do all of our graphics and marketing in house.

CVW: Tell me about your Freelife clothing brand.

Rob: Freelife is pretty much a flag for being yourself. It actually started as a joke between some friends. We would always say we live that “Freelife!” in reference to just being free and not caring what other people think.

Ian: We created a few shirts with a Raiders logo, a Nike bootleg shirt, and a soccer jersey.

We weren’t even confident enough to sell it, so we just gave a couple to our DJ friends. Then all of our friends ended up wearing them at their shows. Skrillex, Martin Garrix, Dillon Francis, TJR, all started wearing Freelife and it spun into this idea of DJ lifestyle. DJs spend a lot of time working in their bedrooms with electronics so our social sense is slightly behind. It’s nice to just throw on a super comfortable shirt, and I think that’s why our friends like Freelife so much.

Rob: The mantra behind Freelife was more personal than just straight-up DJ merchandise. We were never into that idea.

We wanted to create more of an aux-brand, something related to Bixel Boys but not just self-promotion. When Freelife started to take off, we ended up selling the shirts and giving the money to charity. All of the profits from the shirts went to Camp Kesem, a charity that throws weeklong camp sessions for kids whose parents are losing their battle with cancer. We thought it was definitely a better use of the profits than anything else we could have come up with.

CVW: How would you describe your style of music?

Rob: That’s a tough question, because in

this era - especially for me as a producer - it’s still sort of an exploration. It’s hard to nail down and define one genre. I would say our sound is more like eclectic dance music rather than electronic dance music. I’m an experimental person so it’s hard to sit down and produce the same music over and over.

Ian: I agree with Rob. We are constantly changing it up. When I’m not making EDM, I like to draw influence from other genres outside the norm. I listen to a lot of hip-hop, pop music, even classical. I would say what makes us different is that we aren’t afraid to try out new ideas and see where they end up.

CVW: What do you like about Splash House?

Rob: Splash House is by far my favorite festival ever. We booked the first one in 2011, so we’ve been there since the beginning. I love everything about it.

Ian: There is something about 21+ festivals that are nice to play. You don’t need to play bangers, you can experiment with nostalgic

music, and it’s just an all-around better environment. We’ve played at the Saguaro with some bigger sets, but this year we are excited to present our own stage and own L.A. style. Our Bixel Boys Freelife Takeover stage will be set up at the Tiki Pool and will make for a more intimate experience.

CVW: Why should people come to your stage at Splash House?

Ian: Instead of trying to book big DJ’s, we decided to go with a fun line-up filled with some DJ friends who are doing some really cool new stuff. At Splash House, there’s a ton of great electronic and house music everywhere, but by default, our stage will be different because it’ll have a bit of everything. We want our stage to have really eclectic, loose, fun vibes to make for a cool approachable party.

Rob: Basically, our stage is going to feel like your best friends’ backyard pool party.

You could hear indie music, EDM, or hip-hop depending on when you stop by. It’s going to be super inclusive and you’ll feel like you know everyone.

Ian & Rob: We can’t wait to see everyone there and show them a good time.

The Palm Springs Firemen’s Association invites the entire community to come out to the 85th annual Fish Fry on Saturday, June 4 at Ruth Hardy Park.

The event, slated from 6 p.m. – 11 p.m., features fried trout along with corn on the cob and slaw, beverages and live music and dancing. Dinner will be served until 9 p.m.

Admission is just $10 per person.

A

nyone involved in music knows how challenging it can be to form a band and keep it together for any length of time. Conflicting schedules, priorities, visions and personalities are just a few of the reasons why the lifespan of the average band is usually very brief.

It takes deeply rooted passion, motivation and commitment to press through the continuous challenges that arise and frankly, if you are not doing it for the pure love of making music, burnout is inevitable.

2016 CVMA winners for “Best Rock Band” Blasting Echo defied the odds and have long since cemented their place as one of the most respected and beloved bands on the scene. There is no doubt that much of Blasting Echo’s popularity and longevity stems from the unwavering heart and soul of one of the most humble artists I have ever had the pleasure of knowing, B.E. frontman and founder, Josh Heinz. In addition to being a stellar vocalist, songwriter, bandleader and guitarist, the Memphis, TN native is known for generously donating countless hours of his time and skills for many fundraisers including the organization and execution of annual shows benefitting the Coachella Valley Autism Society….. a charity that is dear to the band due to the fact that 3 of the 4 band-members have children on the Autism spectrum.

I asked Josh to tell me the basic story of Blasting Echo and how they got to this point.

Josh Heinz: “After moving out here from Memphis I was in a band called Dufreign for a while that didn’t end up working out, but I had these demos and I had a co-worker named Jeff Fortson who had been a part of the music scene out here since back in the generator party days and we decided to collaborate and set out to find a drummer.

Armando Flores who was a bass player in several good bands over the years had a

studio and we asked if we could use it to audition drummers. After we tried out a couple of drummers, Mando mentioned to us that he dabbled in drumming and asked if he could try out.

Armando Flores: “Playing in Blasting Echo was my first foray into being a multiinstrumentalist in a band setting. Always dabbled in the drums, but never took it seriously enough to play in a band. Playing with Josh and Linda and Joe has been super fulfilling. Josh is one of the most passionate people I know when it comes to music and it shows in everything he does. Other than having to run through bass players like dirty underwear, it has been an amazing time.”

Josh Heinz: “We had always talked about adding keyboards and eventually I met Linda who also sings backup of course.”

I am quite sure Heinz would be the first to say that none of what he does would be possible if it were not for the support of his wife and bandmate, Linda Lemke-Heinz.

As lovely as she is talented, Linda is a busy

mom, music instructor and co-founder of the ridiculously awesome new band, 5th Town. As someone who has been in bands, I know how rare it is for 2 people to be both in a romantic partnership and a band together without it causing strife from time to time so I couldn’t help but ask Linda to touch on the subject.

Linda Lemke-Heinz: “It’s great being in a band with my husband. We collaborate very well together. I hear things he doesn’t in a song and vice versa. We really don’t have to deal with egos or hurt feelings because we both want the same thing...to

make the songs the best they can be. It’s like that collaborating with Mando and Joe, too. No egos. It’s a very creatively free and supportive environment. I feel very lucky to be a part of it.”

Linda continues: “We are not stuck in a rut or particular mold musically. We each add a bit of ourselves and our past experiences to the music. Blasting Echo is unique. And we sure do have a hell of a good time together.”

The newest addition to the group is Long Duk Dong bassist, Joe Dub Wallace.

Wallace: “I knew Josh, Armando and Linda from around the music scene but we never really hung out. When they hit me up and asked if I would be interested in playing with Blasting Echo I was totally stoked! I thought, ‘Here’s this established LEGENDARY group with great songs asking if I’d like to fill the bass position in their awesome band!’ It was a no brainer! They are not only great musicians but they are a ridiculously playful bunch. Josh is a very rare type of person.

He’s so passionate about the band and the music he writes. I’m always blown away by his lyrics, his songs are ANTHEMS! Linda and Mando are always adding that extra bit of complexity or X factor to Josh’s songs.”

he Hive Minds are on fire as they gear up for the release of their album Really Don’t Mind the Waiting on June 10th at La Quinta Brewing Co. The band impressed as they played live for the Presidential Campaign Rally in Cathedral City on Wednesday, whereby Senator Bernie Sanders spoke to a sizeable crowd and publicly thanked the band. The Hive Minds received a new level of recognition as the rally was covered by most local and national television news stations, online media, and printed press.

Band members Derek Jordan Gregg, Sean Poe, and Matt Styler, plan to keep the heat cranked up while they play the new album in its entirety, live at the public album release party next week.

I spoke with all three Hive Minds about the past week’s events and how this experience will ignite the upcoming album release.

Derek Jordan Gregg: “The Bernie Sanders rally was one of the best days of my life. The universe reminded me that the 12 years that I’ve dedicated to my craft have been for something.

This is a major milestone for us and it’s so cool seeing what a group of like-minded individuals can do when they come together. We are all so powerful. I can still hear the roar of the crowd as we came up to the stage. There is nothing like it.

I want more. This album release on Friday June 10th is literally all I think about lately. I am so proud of the work we did in the studio with Ronnie King and I love these songs as if they are my children... and now we share them with the world. I think people are excited about it. We’re stoked that our buddies at the LQ Brewing Company are gonna let us throw our party there. Thanks Mychal!

Thanks also to our manager, Morgan James and to the man himself, Mr. Ronnie King for all of the support and work on the album. Also, to all the local musicians who push us to be the best versions of ourselves, every single person who enjoys what we do. We also have had such an amazing amount of support from radio stations playing our music at KCOD and KDHS, articles in CV Weekly, CV Independent, and The Desert Sun, and venues who hire us to paint the stage.

Moving forward we wanna get this album into the hands of people that can really get it going for us, then ultimately, we wanna tour for an ocean of people who are all singing the words. For me that’s the dream.”

Sean Poe: “Playing for the Bernie Sanders rally was amazing! It was absolutely the coolest show we’ve ever played. There were so many

people in the crowd and it was amazing to see how receptive the people were to our music. It really gives validation to the song writing and the hard work that we’ve put in. It is so amazing to have a payoff for everything we have worked toward up until now. Our album will finally be released next week and we are beyond stoked to get it directly into people’s hands. Really Don’t Mind the Waiting has been in production since late last year so we’ve been sitting with the songs for what seems like forever and it’s been a killer having to wait to show everybody, but we didn’t want anything released until it was up to the best level it could be. A lot of people have been a huge help for the release party, donating time and gear to help make this event amazing. I am really thankful for our manager Morgan who has really helped get the ball rolling and introduced us to Ronnie King who is a huge supporter of local music. Ronnie helped us make an amazing record and he is always pushing us to be better and hooking up gigs like this Bernie Sanders rally through Jon Phillips from Silverback Management! Big ups to them for throwing us to a whole new level. Also thanks to our video director Robert Sandoval and sound technician Alvaro Sandoval.”

Matt Styler: “Playing at the Bernie Sanders rally was one of the best experiences of my life.

It was amazing to have the opportunity to play for thousands of people. I felt very lucky to have a chance to meet Senator Sanders and get a picture with him. I will remember this experience for my whole life. The positive feedback from the event is very exciting! It always feels good to hear that people are appreciating all of the effort that goes into creating music. I am hoping that this new album enables us to share our music with more people, especially new listeners outside of the community. We are working with La Quinta Brewing Company to make this album release party a very special event. Big thanks to Ronnie King and Hybrid Studios for the work that they put into our album. I’m hoping that more large shows are in The Hive Minds’ future. I love performing for a crowd.”

Slim Man: 2016 Best Jazz Vocalist at CVmas

I

t’s been a couple of years since Slim Man decided to leave the east coast and move out to the desert. This multi-talented singer, musician, composer, producer, writer and performer with 14 CDs under his belt made the move to be closer to the jazz music scene in California.

He recently won “Best Jazz Vocals” at the CV Music Awards, much to his delight. An award well-deserved for this pro.

Since he’s been here he’s published his first cookbook which he worked on for years, filled with delicious quick healthy Italian recipes and interesting well-written stories about his experiences in the music business.

His book has been selling well and he’s teamed it up with special invitation only dinners for 12 people at Kitchen Kitchen in Indian Wells. His next one is Saturday, June 18.

He has recently sung at parties for music mogul Clive Davis, and Barbara Sinatra--who has been singing his praises. This ‘kiss from the queen’ has put him in a very special position in the land of the iconic Rat Pack.

Slim Man started his career writing songs for Motown and has continued writing, recording and performing some of the most romantic music in the smooth jazz world.

Most recently he has been emceeing and singing in the Celebrity Jazz Jam series held at Desert Willow Golf Resort with a funny repartee. He’s been doing everything from his originals to blues, pop and even a little Prince with “Kiss”.

He continues his national touring career and is performing around Southern California where he’s had sold-out shows at some venues. His next performance is at the Festival of the Arts, Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach on Wednesday, July 6 with his full band.

Slim Man said he’s writing some new music with no agenda. He’s just sitting down at the piano, guitar or bass and just lets it flow. This is something he hasn’t done in a long, long time. He says it’s time to ‘shake it up’ and do something different. He’s written one song with kind of a ‘crazy beat’. He’s just opening the floodgates and planning on coming up with something new and original.

He’s finally gotten into the California vibe which is very laid-back when compared to the east coast hustle and bustle.

He’s also been working on a TV show with a producer who has started a new Internet TV channel. It will be showcasing lots of Slim Man’s cooking videos. He’d like to do a TV show that combines music and cooking, and is working towards that goal.

I told him after he won his “Best Jazz Vocalist” award, “In 5 years you’ll have a star on the walk of stars in Palm Springs.”

I

t would be impossible to talk about the wonderful evolution and magic of the now world renowned Pappy and Harriet’s, recently voted “Best Live Music Venue” at the Coachella Valley Music Awards, without mentioning its equally beloved “Teddy” Quinn.

Monday nights were handed over to him to try and build up what was once a slow night for the venue. Fast forward to his ninth year hosting the open mic, that over the years has been attended by the likes of Robert Plant, Jessie Coulter, Shooter Jennings, among others famous and yet famous, reservations have to be made over a month in advance to secure a table near the stage.

Ted Quinn began his career at the age of 3 on a television commercial. He has contributed stories to KCET’s “Artbound” series, and has been profiled in Ruben Martinez’s “Desert America.” He’s made a dozen albums, several with Fred Drake at the legendary Rancho de la Luna. He also curates the Beatnik Lounge in Joshua Tree, where he also produces Radio Free Joshua Tree.

CV Weekly was honored to interview Quinn regarding his announcement that he was stepping down from the open mic night that he built into a huge success after almost a decade: CVW: “What prompted you to run the first open mic? How did it all start?”

QUINN: “I had been doing an open mic at the Beatnik Lounge for several years already, and Robyn, who I’d become friends with when she and Linda took over Pappy’s, called to ask me if I’d try doing one there.”

CVW: “What prompted you to retire from something that you have built into such a huge success?”

QUINN: “It seems counterintuitive, but 9 years is a good run. That’s how long Fred lived at the Rancho. It’s a year longer than my longest relationship! My son is ten, and he’s grown up with me there. His first public appearance was there at ‘Sage Fest.’ I’d been wanting to pare down my schedule and spend more time working on a new record and my book.”

CVW: “What were some of your most memorable moments from the past 9 years?”

QUINN: “The other night, First Aid Kit, from Sweden, signed up and ended up backing a little girl from Canada, their biggest fan, on their song, “Emmy Lou.” That was a rock dream come true, as was hosting Ke$ha, who played a few years back. I had no idea who they were until later.”

artist also known as “Feist”) to get up and perform. Feist said she hadn’t heard anyone tell stories like that since she lost her grandmother.”

“I gave Dave Ryan his nickname, DER, after he signed up, using only his initials. A great drummer, Jeff Boaz, returned to playing after a 20 year gap. He was brought by Jamie Browning, a descendent of the poets, who had played the opening riff on “Last Train to Clarksville.” I was intimidated by her at first, but I soon found that cellist, Jennifer Irvine, was an exceptionally gifted improvisational player. I met one of my best friends, and a great musician, Leslie Mariah Andrews here, on Jagger’s birthday six years ago, and we’ve been playing together since.”

“Jeff Boaz (drummer) and I had just finished playing the song, “19th Nervous Breakdown,” when I heard that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards’ daughters were there. I went to them and apologized. Thea Richards smiled and said, ‘It was fucking magical.’”

“Every week had surprises. If I had a label, I’d sign singer/songwriter, Nigel Roman, immediately. The Castagnes were the most exciting band I’d seen in years; their mom had driven them cross country from Montreal to record with my old mate, Tony Mason. They should be world-famous.”

“Putting up a microphone for Jessie Coulter and her son, Shooter Jennings’ after-wedding dinner on a slow Monday night is one; it felt sacred to me. Another night was when the author and star of “Hair,” James Rado, was there. I’ve been obsessed with that score since I was a kid, so I stood on stage and sang half the soundtrack to him a cappella.”

“A pivotal experience was meeting Andre

Gregory, who came for dinner with artist Randy Polumbo. My Dinner with Andre, is my favorite film. He was as kind and wise as I’d imagined.

He kissed my hand and said, ‘Live a great life.’

It was right after Bowie died, and both of those things made me realize I had some work to get done.”

CVW: “What will you miss the most?”

QUINN: “Hanging out with Robyn in the sound booth, laughing, sharing stories. I’ll miss Linda, Cody, Dave and Stacy feeding my dog scraps at midnight.”

CVW: “What is going to happen to the open mic after you leave?”

QUINN: “It will keep going - there and in venues all around the desert.”

CV Weekly was also able to talk to Robyn Celia, co-owner of Pappy and Harriet’s about Ted Quinn, a personal treasure to the entire staff, and his departure. She responded with love and optimism: “We will miss Ted terribly.

He has stuck by Mondays, and has been our fearless leader through thick and thin. He has put his heart into this night, and we will try our best to keep it going. Ted cannot be replaced, so we are going to have guest hosts every week. My hope is I can talk him into being one of the guests hosts once in awhile!”

It is certain that Ted Quinn will continue to be a force of light and love in the high desert.

Like all of those who have regularly been blessed by Quinn’s gifts, CV Weekly would like to wish him all the best in the endeavors of his heart as well as thank him for giving a spotlight to the musical heart quests of so many others.

f you aren’t familiar with Andrew Bird, it’s about time you get acquainted. A perfect place to start is his newest record, Are You Serious.

Growing up in Evanston, Illinois, Andrew Bird came from a musical household where he was exposed to Classical music and other traditional genres at an early age. When he was four years old he began learning and violin, and then other instruments using the Suzuki Method. (A form of instruction that circumvents the process of reading music).

He finally learned to read music when he started high school. That experience was simultaneously traumatic and invigorating. By the time he graduated Northwestern University in 1995, it was with a bachelor’s degree in violin.

Not long after, he self-released his first album, Music Of Hair.

Taking jobs in musical theatre, studio sessions and even renaissance fairs gave him real practical experience playing a plethora of different styles. He joined the band Charlie Nobody and then moved on to the Hot Jazz combo, Squirrel Nut Zippers.

Although the Zippers’ music was a potent combination of influences, (everyone from Billie Holiday, Louis Jordan and Django Reinhardt, Delta Blues and Klezmer), they were lumped in with late ‘90s Swing revival bands like Brian Setzer and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

As an “honorary” member of the Zippers, allowed Andrew the freedom to start his own band. Reconnecting with ex-Charlie Nobody drummer Kevin O’Donnell, they recruited bassist Josh Hirsch and guitarist/vocalist Nora O’Connor and formed Andrew Bird’s Bowl Of Fire. Between 1998 and 2001 they released three albums, Thrills, Oh! The Grandeur and The Swimming Hour on the Rykodisc label. But Andrew grew restless and embarked on a solo career.

In 2002, he left his apartment in Chicago and moved to a farm in rural Illinois. There, he tilled crops, milked cows and tended to his chickens. He also set up a recording studio in the converted barn. As inspiration struck, he wrote and recorded on the spot. The result was Weather Systems

Released in 2003 on a tiny label called Grimesy Records, it featured assistance from Kevin O’Donnell and Nora O’Connor, But Andrew played the lion’s share of the instruments, including violin, vocals, and even whistling.

Somehow, his prodigious talents came to the attention of Ani DiFranco, who signed him to her Righteous Babe label. She promptly re-released Weather Systems, giving it a bigger, broader platform. The following year, she invited him on the road as her opening act.

2005 saw the release of his second Righteous Babe effort, Andrew Bird & The Mysterious Production Of Eggs. The songs had been gestating even before Weather Systems. It was a seamless collection, blending his eclectic melodicism and instrumentation with biting and sardonic lyricism. Touring again with Ani gave him wide exposure, as her rabid and loyal fan base fully embraced his music.

He signed a deal with the Fat Possum label and they released his next two records, Armchair Apocrypha (2007) and Noble Beast (2009). Both explored more traditional Rock N’ Roll textures, but maintained his sui generis brand. 2012’s Break It Yourself saw him jumping the Fat Possum ship for another well-respected indie, Mom+Pop. Less than 10 months later he followed up with his seventh solo album Hands Of Glory.

In between official studio albums, Andrew found time to release live EPs (the “Fingerings” series), a Handsome Family covers record, Things Are Really Great Here …Sort Of, plus an all instrumental album, Echolocations, that was recorded in the Coyote Gulch canyons of Utah.

He even created the score for Zach Galifianakis’ television series “Baskets.”

Elements of his personal life were equally efficacious. Andrew met and married fashion designer Katherine Tsina and he relocated to New York. Following the birth of their son, she was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer. She endured all the harrowing treatments and came out the other side, thanks in part to Obamacare.

Soon, the young family moved across the country, settling in Los Angeles. En route, they stopped at his parents’ farm in Western Illinois.

It was there that Andrew began composing what would become his ninth solo album, Are You Serious.

The record kicks into gear with “Capsized.”

A real departure for Andrew, the song shares some musical DNA with Bill Withers’ Soul classic, “Use Me.” Tensile guitar licks intertwine with serpentine violin sounds, slithering over a Funky back-beat. The lyrics sketch out the details of a tumultuous on/off relationship Andrew experienced as a bachelor.

Both “Roma Fade” and “Left Handed Kisses” chart the course of romantic love, from instant attraction to familiar ennui. Everything that powers “Roma Fade,” from the whistling intro, the swooping violin notes and the gamboling beat connotes the frisson of new love.

It’s an undeniable lightning bolt connection that hits all of us, (if we’re lucky), at least once in life. It quickens the pulse and shortens the breath. As the mating dance ensues, Andrew

proceeds with caution, offering an inner peptalk to keep calm and carry on. “And your X-rays of your paleo-male gaze, how it rests and plays, slowly corrupting you…/If she sees you it changes you, rearranges your molecules, if you see her it changes you.”

On “Left Handed Kisses,” Andrew gets a vocal assist from Fiona Apple. Their caustic rapport could re-position them as an NPR Sonny and Cher! (Or at the very least a 21st century version of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra). They stake out their positions in the prickly intro: the stoic pragmatist vs. the sardonic romantic, but their countenances soften along with the instrumentation.

A warm country comfort envelopes the melody, accented by the familiar violin and whistle, as well as vibes and tubular bells. Their vocals become more moon-and-June croon-y as they go back and forth. She notes “The point your song here misses is that if you really love me, you’d risk more than a few fifty-cent words in your back-handed love songs.” He tenderly replies “For it begs the question how did I ever find you? Now you’ve got me writing love songs, with a common refrain like this one here, baby.”

On previous albums it felt as though Andrew Bird approached his music from a safe distance. A couple of tracks here seem much more up close and personal. “Chemical Switches” is spare and intimate, lightly propelled by whistling and guitar.

Originally an instrumental, the meandering lyrics recall a childhood mis-adventure involving slingshots and a neighbor’s camping tent.

“Puma” hits even closer to home. The propulsive melody and instrumentation are as lithe and nimble as the feline predator the song is named for. In reality, the lyrics limn the terrifying, seemingly endless days Katherine was enduring radiation treatments. “She was radioactive for seven days, how I wanted to be holding her anyway/But the doctors told me to stay away, due to flying neutrinos and Gamma rays” Sawing violin, crystalline mandolin runs and thumpy percussion underscore the anxiety.

The best tracks here are equal parts playful and erudite. “Truth Lies Low” blends scatter-shot rhythms with loping, soulful vocals and supple, Laurel Canyon guitar as the melody slowly builds.

Cryptic lyrics seem to take aim at the cynics of the world; “Anonymously their hate grows, vitriol from their pens flow...” The song bares some sonic resemblance to Rupert Holmes’ “Pina Colada Song,” (but don’t let that deter you). The instrumental coda is lush and ethereal.

Fluttery, buzzy guitar notes cascade over violin

fills that spark and dart with the alacrity of a Hummingbird.

On the slinky title track Andrew’s verbal acuity takes center stage. Violin and guitar square off in a sharp pas de deux as he admits “Used to be so willfully obtuse, or is the word abstruse?/ Semantics like a noose get out your dictionaries, I’m gonna cut to the quick, this is all non-fiction/ Words you can beat with a stick, these are my true convictions.”

Finally, “Valleys Of The Young” is a brilliant encomium to his young son that sharply catalogues joys and frustrations of parenthood.

Over a tick-tock beat, delicate wash of guitar and banjo, and of course the ever-present, warm violin tones, Andrew gracefully articulates the brittle disconnect between parents and nonparents. “Where your friends become strange to you…And their problems seem like luxuries, they’re off getting stoned and hugging trees/ And the things you’ll be forsaking, still our hearts are constantly breaking/From their cradle to our grave, is it selfish, is it brave?”

Recalibrating disparate styles from German Lieder to Folk and Gypsy Jazz, Andrew Bird’s music has always colored outside the lines. Both “Saints Preserveus” and “The New Saint Jude” find him tackling new musical territories. The former feels desolate and beautiful, the style pivots between Argentine Tango and Spaghetti Western it even folds in a sly reference to the Gospel standard, “Amazing Grace.”

On the latter, he traverses the fertile landscape of African Mbaqanga. (A style Paul Simon cannibalized and popularized on his Graceland album 30 years ago). The song is anchored by Jazzy guitar licks, omnichord, tiples (that’s a Colombian guitar), and layered keyboards. The unfettered joy of the melody is matched by lyrics that celebrate the freedom of dashed expectations; “So here’s a mighty revelation that’s sure to cure what ails you, that everyone’s a disappointment and everyone’s a failure/And this we shall celebrate in our finest regalia, like a choir of shining angels, a congregation Mahalias.”

The album closes with “Bellevue.” Although it’s mostly an instrumental, here he offer a gentle paean to his wife; “Now I found someone who can slake my thirst, in a land beset by drought/Who feeds my hungry heart when the fields lie fallow, guides my lonely ship through the shallows.” The kaleidoscopic guitar and violin interplay build to a thrilling crescendo, a short, but definitely sweet finish to an eclectic collection of songs.

Are You Serious was recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Tony Berg, (Edie Brickell, Michael Penn, Aimee Mann). It features Alan Hampton on bass, Bram Inscore and Patrick Warren on keys, Ted poor on drums, Moses Sumney on backing vocals and the extraordinary Blake Mills on guitar.

Andrew Bird manages the neat trick of being introspective and intoxicating at the same time.

His music is addicting. Let Are You Serious be your gateway drug.

BLAM

They Did It Again

B

LAM is the acronym for the art movement, Brooklyn Los Angeles Meet. The latest collaboration is Aperture, which opens June 4th at the BLAM Gallery, 1950 S. Santa Fe Ave., #207, in Los Angeles. The gallery is open weekends 12 to 4 p.m. and by appointment. Aperture features Brooklyn and Los Angeles artists.

The exhibition runs through June 26.

Artist Peter Hickok curated the exhibition.

It features work from several artists including, Kio Griffith, Alissa Polan, Rachel Mica Weiss and Shirley Tse. The exhibition, Aperture, concerns the object and the representation. “Using tactics from painting and sculpture, to video and photography, each work questions the creation process of meaning as it is translated between image and object. An aperture can be thought of not only as a space through which light passes to create a photograph but also as the opening through which an idea takes shape as it moves back and forth between two and three dimensions,” explained Peter Hickok.

“Each artist’s personal journey, their point of view, is what is important. Shirley Tse’s work is an interesting personal exploration of possible outcomes and multiple realties. It is a person living in a world of objects and not knowing what it could become,” continues Peter.

It is this multidimensional thinking, of the literal, the reality and the surreal abstraction that makes Aperture an intrigue conceptual journey. As BLAM pushes boundaries, we the viewers are compelled to question what we think we know.

The concept of three dimensionality is key to the exhibition. Whether 2 or 3 dimensional the works present a sense of touch and the power any object has to relate to the viewer as art. There is a push-pull effect and sense of relation of bodies in space.

That special relationship is evident in the work of participating artist Alissa Polan. Alissa has described her artistic journey as working with collage, photography and sculpture “to explore society’s fetishistic relationships with nature and its proclivity to equate nature with consumption, leisure and capital.” Alissa’s work does not disappoint.

“My work is limited to the size of the post card. The text, mat and frame are incorporated to create the appearance of one solid object.

My work is based around photography and of the history of photography. Photography influences our perception of things. Western Expansion was fueled by photography showing fantastic places and larger than life figures. Photography created the fantasy. I respect what the postcard represents more than the object portrayed,” said Alissa.

We’ve been around for over two decades (Red Chair and The Grand Canyon”) will be on view at Aperture. The piece features a red chair that is suspended above the Grand Canyon framed by a rainbow. The imagery calmly soothes the viewer in to the absurdity of the scene. It shouldn’t work, but it does.

Consumerism entwined with natural beauty is on display. G-rated fetish? That is for the viewer to determine.

ogs love to travel! Chances are your dog races to go with you whenever you gather up your car keys. Dogs are natural nomads, traveling in packs in the wild. They are curious creatures who love seeing new places and meeting new friends.

Traveling with pets has become easier with more hotels and restaurants with outdoor seating happily accommodating them.

Many Coachella Valley residents are now traveling to cooler locations, and their dogs often accompany them. Wise planning and safety precautions make the experience more enjoyable.

It is good business sense to cater to pet owners. Some restaurants even have “doggie” menus with special cooked items for canines. Your well behaved leashed dog is welcome at many local retailers including Home Depot, Lowes, Apple, The Pottery Barn, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Many major hotel chains including Marriott’s Residence Inn, Motel 6 and Best Western allow pets.

Campgrounds are full of family pets. Doggie day care programs can provide coverage if you visit tourist sites where dogs are not allowed.

One pet focused resort, Canine Camp Getaway in New York, offers scent-detection

workshops for the dogs, decorating homemade dog biscuit classes for the humans, and sharing celebratory beverages at “Yappy Hour”. Hotel pools pose a possible risk to dogs. While many dogs swim and know how to get themselves out, other breeds with heavy coats are not able to sustain themselves in pool water. Life preservers for dogs are an extra precaution.

CAR TRAVEL A host of new products ensure the comfort and safety of your dog during car trips. Cool pads inside his carrier cool down the temperature during hot weather. Socks or little shoes keep his feet from burning on the hot pavement. Tiny sunglasses with UV protection guard against sun damage to the eyes and block dust & debris. “Cool down” harnesses, vests containing cooling crystals, help on hot days. Car harnesses protect your dog if you have to stop suddenly. A collar with your phone number and a recent photograph of your dog are essential in case he gets lost.

snack shop and a trip to Nordstrom, another dog friendly business. Of course, unlike Lilly in this fun photograph, dogs should not be left alone in cars.

NEVER LEAVE YOUR DOG IN A CLOSED VEHICLE ON A HOT DAY, even with the windows cracked. The temperature inside can soar in a matter of minutes. Unattended animals inside cars are also at risk of being stolen. It takes less than a minute for someone to break a window and steal your pet. If you are traveling alone with your dog and can’t find a responsible person to watch him, no one will object if you take a calm dog into a public restroom. Drive through restaurants or a picnic under a tree can replace indoor restaurant meal stops.

AIRLINE TRAVEL A health certificate from your veterinarian is required for airline travel.

Bring copies of shot records including rabies. Check in advance with your airline as pet requirements can differ. If you have a small dog under your airline’s weight limit, it is recommended you take them in a carrier in the passenger cabin where they travel under your seat. Some groups advise against shipping your pet in the cargo area due to instances of loss, injury and even death. If you must ship an animal below cabin, book a direct flight. Your trusted veterinarian can decide if sedation will make the flight easier.

TRAIN TRAVEL Amtrak does not allow pets other than service animals. Smaller regional rail companies are more hospitable, but call first to find out about crating and other restrictions. Some transit companies don’t allow animals during crowded rush hours.

Short leashes are recommended.

T

he 2016 Greater Palm Springs Restaurant Week is here; and now the time has come for all good foodies and vino lovers to come to the aid of their appetite. Actually, the food celebrations and festivities go on for ten days running from June 3rd to June 12th.

In the desert here, we no longer save our pennies for a rainy day—they never come, but we do save them for this moment in time to seek out and enjoy all of the wonderful restaurants that have been on our list for months.

I hear that there are some 100 participating restaurants, attractions, spas, and hotels in the Coachella Valley all rejoicing in the merriments and gastronomic pleasures of the greater Palm Springs week.

All you food addicts will no doubt go to the easy-to-navigate website, VisitGreaterPalmSprings.com, to chill and to cherry-pick the city, cuisine and price of your prospective cookery’s menu. In addition make dinner or hotel reservations direct from the site, and get exact locations.

At participating restaurants, with prix fixe prices at $28, $38, or, at the new $48 price point, plan to enjoy a three-course meal, while taking the opportunity to survey upand-coming chefs’ cuisine, dine at romantic bistros or re-visit your favorite chef’s pièce de résistance.

Ubi bonum cibum, bonum vinum—where there is good food, there is good wine!

Often times, progressive foodies will check out the wine deals before considering the cuisine—which may well influence the meal chosen. Below, are some recommendations of Restaurant Week participants that also showcase wine-by-the-glass and great bottle prices: Lulu California Bistro in Palm Springs has one of the more extensive “wines by the glass” list to accompany the Restaurant Week Menu and other dinner menus. The Lulu 4-course dinner is offered for $38, and includes many of the finest items from Lulu’s dinner menu. Highlights include beautiful 12 oz Veal Chop, Prime New York Steak, and Premium Grilled Pork Chop; Lobster Salad, and Half Roasted Duck. Soup, Appetizers & Dessert plates abound.

Very good wines for very good interests include: the very refreshing Cakebread

Sauvignon Blanc from Napa Valley at $15.99 that will pair beautifully with the Lobster Salad; Cuvaison Chardonnay, Napa Valley, at $14.99; back again with Cakebread, this time their Napa Valley Chardonnay at $17.99; the pervasive Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio at $12.99; a tasty Chalone Pinot Noir from Monterey will well complement the Roasted Duck at only $8.49; the most tasty Markham Merlot from Napa at $13.59; and, although I’ve yet to pair this combo, it’s my educated guess that the Prime New York Steak will match perfectly with Napa Valley’s Educated Guess Cabernet Sauvignon at only $12.99.

Johnny Costa’s Ristorante: I’m thinking that most people in our valley know already that the esteemed Johnny Costa served as Frank Sinatra’s personal chef back in the day. And that connection continues to stir us patrons every time we walk into the Iconic Palm Springs Italian restaurant.

Going gaga over Executive Chef Vince Costa’s authentic cuisine is what we Italians do. For Restaurant Week, here’s a selected look at his $38 3-Course Dinner list: For starters, look for the Mozzarella Bocconcini Salad and the world famous Pasta Fagioli.

The entrées include Pollo alla Florentine, Eggplant Parmigiana & Cheese Ravioli, Halibut Filet, and of course, the renowned 6oz. filet steak topped with “Sinatra Sauce’—sautéed garlic, mushrooms, and bell peppers in a wine sauce, served with a side of fresh vegetables.

Delicioso!

And here’s one of my favorite things about the vino at Costa’s: Amongst so many others, they carry one of the most beloved bottles in town—the Travaglini Gattinara at a great bottle price. They also have red and white wines, both Italian and Californian for only $10 a glass.

Another great eatery that owns one of the largest restaurant wine cellars in Palm Springs is Johannes Restaurant. Executive Chef and owner Johannes Bacher is known as the “Eclectic Chef, and has been deemed one of the country’s top culinary talents in the publication Best Chefs America.

Definitely the artist-type in the kitchen, call it “Inventive Euro-Austrian Cuisine with a Global Twist”—if you need a handle on his métier. His $48 Three-Course Restaurant Week menu includes the likes of Fried Oysters & Ahi Tartare; Escargot, Asparagus & Sweetbread Roses with Garlic Lemon Herb Sauce; and

Raw Beet Ravioli, Cashew Ricotta Cheese, Pistachios, Scallions, Micro Herbs with Yellow Bell Pepper Purée; and that’s just for starters!

His entrées include: Spinach & Crayfish Stuffed Grouper; Pretzel and Horseradish Crusted Natural Pork Chop; and Sautéed Prawns in Virgin Olive Oil, Soft Polenta and

Snow Peas. Is this guy the bomb or what!

Also look for Johannes’ Vegan, vegetarian and Signature dishes available every night.

As mentioned, the restaurant’s international wine list boasts of more than 400 wine selections with over 40 listed by the glass! And great house wine for $8 a glass.

At only $28 for their Restaurant Week menu, check out Trio Restaurant “Where Palm Springs Eats”. Some of the most popular items served at this restaurant are being offered such as Roasted Baby Beet Salad, Caesar Salad Wedge, Baby Kale Salad, and Seafood Cocktail; entrées such as Pan Roasted Halibut, Pork Tenderloin, Skirt Steak, or Vegetarian entrée; and desserts such as House-made Chocolate Brownies or Bread Pudding.

The above 3-Couse meal is a $44 value!

TRIPPING IN ABSURD AND SURREAL WORLDS NOW PLAYING: LOBSTER

David (Colin Farrell) is a man who has just been dumped by his wife. He lives in a society where single people have 45 days to find true love, or else they are turned into the animal of their choice and released into the woods. David has checked into a mysterious hotel where he searches for a new partner, but he makes a daring escape and joins a The Loners a rebel faction who reject the very idea of romance. Soon, David meets an enigmatic stranger (Rachel Weisz) who stirs strong feelings.

men held the packed house enthralled. This audacious film -- is it a romantic fable? – From writer-director Yorgos Lanthimos and his terrific cast may not be for all tastes. It is goofily absurd in places and the overall oppressiveness never fully evaporates. Is it a satire? Or a sci-fi fantasy? I have no idea, but as discomforting as it was, I loved it.

Mainly for its sheer audaciousness and dark humor. This film does not pander to one’s expectations. Even now in retrospect, I have no idea what this movie is really about, but I think Kafka, George Orwell and Jean Paul Sartre might put it on their top ten list.

Recommended.

ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

I was disappointed but fully immersed in the lush world of Alice (Mia Wasikowska) as she returns to the whimsical world of Underland and travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp).

Lewis Carroll’s characters come alive again thanks to a returning all-star (Depp, Anne Hathaway, Wasikowska and Helena Bonham Carter plus the voices of Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen and Timothy Spall. New characters included Zanik Hightopp (Rhys Ifans), the Mad Hatter’s father and Time himself (Sacha Baron Cohen), the latter a peculiar creature that’s part human, part clock. The 3D is great and I was entertained not so much by the story as by the extraordinary production values. But when it was over, I was not satisfied and still hungry for a more fulfilling and rewarding story. And frankly, I’ve seen enough of Johnny Depp, as talented as he is, in white face.

NEW FOR THE HOME THEATER: ANOMALISA

Hailed by top critics as a “stop-motion marvel,” “staggeringly inventive” and “the most human film of the year.” Anomalisa marks another brilliant and utterly distinctive highlight in Charlie Kaufman’s filmography. It’s a thought-provoking treat for fans of introspective weirdness. The story follows Michael Stone – husband, father and noted author – as he travels to Cincinnati to speak at a customer service conference. But once he’s separated from the comfortable routine of his daily life, a chance encounter helps enlightens him to what he’s been missing. Charlie Kaufman’s play has been adeptly brought to life by the genius of animator Duke Johnson. It was the 2016 Oscar© Nominee for Best Animated Feature Film.

A one-night stand in the hotel Fregoli (Google the word) merges love, laughter and loneliness in this remarkable parable featuring the superb voice acting of DaviD Thewlis, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Tom Noonan. You’ve never seen a “puppet movie” like this. The haunting images will linger long after final fade out. The critic who called it “the most human film of the year” is correct. Nice extras explore the creative process that went into the crafting of this masterpiece. Recommended. Paramount.

THE PLAYER (1992)

Tim Robbins is Hollywood studio executive with a defective moral compass who finds himself caught up in a criminal situation that would be right at home in one of his movie projects. This widely loved film is more than a biting industry satire. From my experience in the movie biz, it rings truer than one might guess. Especially the stark and naked ambition displayed throughout and the many outrageous justifications for shameful behavior. The story is based on Michael Tolkin’s stylish novel about a Hollywood murder. Director Robert Altman adeptly mixes elements of film noir with dark comedy. The perfect supporting

cast features: Peter Gallagher, Whoopi Goldberg, Greta Scacchi, Dean Stockwell, Fred Ward and a dollop of star cameos that make for an engaging Hollywood who’s who. The pristine 4K digital restoration is beautiful and consistent with Criterion’s high standards. Among the generous extras: Audio commentary from 1992 featuring director Robert Altman, writer Michael Tolkin, and cinematographer Jean Lépine Interview with Altman from 1992 New interviews with writer Tolkin, actor Tim Robbins, associate producer David Levy, and production designer Stephen Altman Cannes Film Festival press conference from 1992 with cast and crew Robert Altman’s Players, a short documentary about the shooting of the film’s fund-raiser scene.

HAIL CAESAR

When the world’s biggest movie star (George Clooney) goes missing, it’s up to studio ”fixer” Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) to rescue him. Besides Clooney and Brolin, this richly detailed period comedy set in Hollywood’s Golden Age features Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, Jonah Hill, Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, Alden Ehrenreich and Frances McDormand.

The story unfolds during a single day in the complicated life of fixer Mannix who must recover his leading man while simultaneously appeasing singing cowboy star Hobie Doyle (Ehrenreich), disgruntled director Laurence Laurentz (Ralph Fiennes), swimming sensation DeeAnna Moran (Scarlet Johansson) and song-and-dance superstar Burt Gurney (Channing Tatum), all while horse trading information to keep his talent’s names out of the gossip columns written by rival siblings Thora and Thessaly Thacker (Tilda Swinton). This well-crafted celebration of old Hollywood’s crazier lifestyle is a perfect fit for Writer/director Coen brothers who have previously explored their shared fascination for vintage Hollywood.

This is not among their best films, but the exuberance of the enterprise and the lush production values make it worth a watch.

“Dance floor Democracy” By sherrie tucker nonfiction

----------------------------------------------------arlier this year, Secretary of State, John Kerry, met with Hollywood movers and shakers to persuade the film industry to help with the fight against ISIS by producing movies that would change the minds of those who might be inclined to join the terrorist organization. Hollywood has helped with every war effort since its inception.

In Sherrie Tucker’s Dance Floor Democracy: The Social Geography of Memory at the Hollywood Canteen (Duke University Press, 408 pages), the “Greatest Generation” recalls life on an iconic Hollywood dance floor.

If you think about Hollywood culture during the second World War, you might get an image of a black and white photo where a pretty girl dances on a crowed dance floor, her legs and arms stretched out doing the jitterbug with a young man wearing a uniform equally sprawled in motion.

Likely, that iconic image was taken at the Hollywood Canteen. The doors opened in 1942 on Cahuenga Boulevard in

by Hollywood guilds and unions to support the war effort, it was a club designed specifically for servicemen and women, and the service personnel of US allied countries.

The Hollywood Canteen provided free food, dancing and entertainment.

Bette Davis and John Garfield were the impetus and energy behind the club.

The idea was to bring big stars like Rita Hayworth, Hedy Lamarr, Ann Sheridan and Marlene Dietrich, along with the big bands of Duke Ellington, Jimmy Dorsey and Kay Kyser to the regular people or “little shots” as opposed to “big shots.” The famous and beautiful would serve food and dance with servicemen to show their support for the “Good War.” Author Tucker explores the national identity the club portrayed and the dance floor democracy of war, unity, innocence, equality, integration and patriotism. Tucker asks what is the gap between the iconic photo and the national memory.

In her research, Tucker found that newspapers across the country from the Los Angeles Times to the communist Daily Worker all described the Hollywood Canteen in the same positive terms expressing a “utopian tale of national unity and innocence.” These periodicals claimed the canteen was egalitarian, where mix races danced together and economic differences were set aside.

With 60 interviews of people who

attended or worked at the canteen, Tucker thoughtfully and respectfully forms a narrative of the era that includes music, dance, gender and race.

As it turns out, the first-hand recollections do not always support the joyous image of the picture-perfect nationally embraced narrative. News that white women danced the swing with black men could not be confirmed. Rather, black servicemen tell that they were denied front door entrance and sat in the balcony to watch the dance floor below.

Hearing the reports of black men dancing the swing with white women incited the FBI to send an agent to spy. The FBI also had concerns there might be a Communist presence at the canteen.

I was certainly aware of the iconic photos, but not until I read Dance Floor Democracy did I know the story behind them and the story of the Hollywood Canteen. I have seen the 1944 Warner Bros. film Hollywood Canteen and simply passed the movie

off as a Hollywood musical and wartime propaganda. I didn’t realize the place was so politically significant and culturally popular.

The canteen closed in 1945.

Tucker brings this world back to life and we get to relive it with all the fantastic music and dance that shaped the era. Tucker never forces an agenda and admits when she lacks further information. She is careful not to draw conclusions on politics or alter the existing narrative. She is simply sharing the honest beauty and dignity of the time period. Unfortunately, that also includes racism, sexism and inequality.

It’s important to get an authentic look at our past and Tucker takes that very seriously.

Meticulously researched and well-written, Tucker is mindful of the history and points to the value in a total understanding of the complete picture.

Those who helped out at the club is a Who’s Who of “A” list Hollywood celebrity and power brokers. Hollywood Canteen created a fairytale mystique that, paradoxically, was both real and makebelieve. Dance Floor Democracy is not about star power, but the power of music, dance and ideas and how that shaped a culture and transformed perception.

This is a fascinating and relevant read especially if you love history and music.

NBA Finals Set -LeBron Secures Legacy

L

eBron James has a long resume of accomplishments — two titles, four MVPs, and he hasn’t missed an All-Star Game or an All-NBA team for a decade — but he reached one of his more impressive milestones in leading the Cavaliers past the Raptors to the NBA Finals on Friday night.

LeBron has reached six straight NBA Finals and is the first player to do so in 50 years. The last guys to do this were Bill Russell, Tom Heinsohn, K.C. Jones, Bob Cousy and other members of the 1950s-60s

Celtics dynasty. Nobody has done it since — not Magic, Bird, Jordan, Wilt or the rest.

Yes, it helps cement LeBron’s legacy as one of the all-time greats, but more than that it’s something we need to step back and appreciate. These were all LeBron-led teams — he has been the leader on and off the court, setting the tone. That requires incredible talent and skill on the court, plus knowing how to make those guys better not just drag them along on your coat tails. Not to mention his health – all these extra miles and not one long injury, not one? It’s an amazing accomplishment.

“There’s only one LeBron James,” Raptors coach Dwane Casey said after his team was eliminated by James and company. “He makes a difference on whatever team he plays on.”

I can feel the typing in the comment section already: “But he’s 2-4 in the Finals, Jordan was 6-0” or “But he’s done it in a weak East” or “He keeps just jumping teams to where he has the most help.” It’s all just sad. Because LeBron James is the first NBA superstar of the social media age he faces a

volume of criticism that past stars did not.

It’s not that LeBron hasn’t brought some criticism on himself, but there is a need to tear him down that the mythologized Jordan never dealt with. We savored Jordan at the time; LeBron has never gotten that.

Jordan took 13 NBA teams to the playoffs, six made the Finals; LeBron has taken 11 and seven are in the Finals. The thing is, it’s difficult to compare across eras in the All of this is not to say LeBron’s record is better than Jordan’s, you and your buddies can

debate that while sitting on bar stools until last call, but LeBron has been on an epic run through the peak of his career the likes we haven’t seen in a long time. If you’re a fan of the game, you should appreciate that, not try to tear it down (as if Jordan’s legacy somehow needs protecting).

What LeBron has done is a stunning accomplishment. If you’re in the same sentence with the legendary Russell Celtics teams, you’re doing something right. Currently Warriors are a favorite in Las Vegas at -225 favorites, you would lay $225 and if Warriors win the title you would get $325 back. While the Cavaliers at +175, you would lay $100 to get $175 back. I think at this point, the pressure the Warriors will [put on the Cavs we will begin to see the fragility of the team chemistry we’ve been hearing about all season from the Cavs locker room. They unwind in dramatic fashion in Game 6. Unfortunately, with all of LeBron’s accolades, this band of dysfunctional superstars falls short this year and the Warriors repeat.

ost news services in the United States do very little international news reporting. This week, let’s look at a few of the more interesting stories that have had little to no reporting here in the United States.

Starting in Iran, Payvand News reported that more than thirty graduating college students received 99 lashes each for violating the country’s morality code.

Their offense? Drinking alcohol, dancing with members of the opposite sex, and women not wearing veils. Worth noting, homosexuality is illegal in Iran with the maximum penalty being execution.

Looking at our neighbors to the south in Mexico, more than 35,000 child refugees have escaped Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala this year and fled to Mexico to avoid violent street gangs. With no plan on how to deal with this influx of children, Mexico is using immigration facilities as longterm holding stations. As for the countries that the children have fled from, civil rights activists say that those governments are

unable to protect these children due to a stifling mix of incompetence and corruption.

While El Salvador cannot protect its children, it was able to sentence Maria Rivera to forty years in jail for having a miscarriage. In El Salvador, an abortion is considered murder and illegal under all circumstances.

Picking through the garbage is a way of life for many in Guatemala City. It came as no surprise when three people died and ten were injured as a pile of trash in a garbage dump collapsed under a torrent of rains.

In Senegal on the continent of Africa, 25-year-old Ali Fall is recovering from a near death experience. Fall is not a police officer or garbage picker but a fisherman.

Last week, Fall was attacked by a marauding group of hippos. Senegal is attempting to address this increasing problem by outfitting fishing boats with state-purchased motors in order to help fisherman evade these marauding herbivores.

MEMORIAL DAY 2016 DUI.. ? 20 SECRET RIGHTS

I

f you were arrested for a DUI over Memorial Day the Officer asked you to exit the vehicle & questioned you. Most drivers (and lawyers) don’t know the Breath Test and Field Sobriety Test (FST) at the scene are OPTIONAL. These tests can only hurt your DUI case.

Hopefully you took a Blood Test at the police station or hospital, as it is preferable.

Many professionals believe with the passage of time the reading will decrease by the time the blood is drawn.........unless the driver just chugged a drink and the alcohol had not yet gotten into the blood system. The average driver is not aware that it takes about an hour for the alcohol to go into your blood stream and an hour to come out.....but now YOU DO! Here is a summary of your 20 SECRET DUI rights: 1. Field Sobriety and Breath Tests at the scene are OPTIONAL. 2. If no drinks for a few hours, request a Blood test at the station.

3. It takes about an hour for a drink to go in or out of your blood.

4. A DMV hearing MUST be requested within 10 days of your arrest or your right to a hearing is lost and your license is suspended 30 days thereafter.

5. Miranda rights are not as important because they apply to questioning at the scene or station. The DA can make a case without anything you say and will just use the FST’s (walk the line, finger to nose etc.) and the chemical (Breath or Blood) Tests.

6. Silence is Golden and Handcuffs are Silver so DON’T TALK to POLICE without your lawyers permission.

7. The correct charge is Driving Under the Influence, not Drunk Driving. You merely have to be Impaired.

8. The DA will ask for Jail Time on a first time DUI in the Indio Court.

9. There are alternatives to jail time.

10. Recently the DA decided to make their best offer at the Arraignment. Thus aging the case, as was done in the past, may not be in the client’s best interest. A DUI TEST REFUSAL results in a 1 year license SUSPENSION. 11. A DUI: is filed as VC 23152 a: Driving under the influence & VC 23152 b: Driving with a BA (Blood Alcohol reading) of .08.

12. A DUI requires both a DMV and Court proceeding.

13. A REFUSAL to take a DUI test results is a 1 year SUSPENSION. 14. The 23152 a & b filing gives the DA two (2) bites of the apple.

15. A 23152b only deals with an alcohol reading of .08 or more 16. If you lose the DMV hearing your license is suspended for about 4-5 months (4 month restriction if no DMV hearing requested and 5 if DMV hearing requested). If you plead in court or lose at trial your license is again suspended

by DMV.......but you do not have to endure 2 separate suspensions.

17. A DUI/ Reckless Driving or At Fault Accident is 2 points and Traffic tickets are 1 point.

18. License suspended if total points is 4 in 1year: 6 in 2 years or 8 points in 3 years 19. Traffic School removes a point; Ticket remains for Insurance Purposes.

20. The Indio court only accepts Traffic

A world away in Greenland, the Ice News reported that Wassam Azaqeer of Nuuk, the country’s only Muslim, “incredibly” completed 21 hours of fasting for Ramadan.

The Local of Sweden, reported that the 23,000 residents of Kiruna are the country’s “sexiest municipality.” Until this recognition, Kiruna was best known for having been knocked down and moved in 2015 due to safety concerns caused by a large iron ore quarry in town. Lastly, the RT in Russia reported that their Parliament is considering a bill that would require the divorcees of politicians to report their holdings of assets abroad. This is being done as the Communist Party believes that many politicians are hiding illegal offshore accounts via fake divorces. In 2013, it was made illegal for politicians to own any offshore assets other than property. No mention has been made of Putin’s “illegal” offshore accounts discovered in the hack of Mossack Fonseca files…or his divorce.

Another bill before their Parliament bans the children of elected officials from engaging in entrepreneurship. At the same time, the RT reported that Vladimir Putin holds an 80% approval rating, down 9% from last year yet he was still the country’s ‘most trusted’ politician at 53%.

A Fond Farewell: The Closing of Cinémas Palme d’Or

W

aiting in line at the Cinémas Palme d’Or box office these days, the talk is not about movies, but about the closing of the beloved theater. Every year this paper has held a “Best in the Coachella Valley” event, Cinémas Palme d’Or was consistently voted the favorite movie theater.

“I’m very upset about the closing,” said year-round resident Francine Wixen of Shadow Hills. “My friends and I come every other week, at the very least. We like the art films and independent movies. We don’t mind the subtitled foreign films. Where will we see these movies now? We’ll be missing out on films you can’t see anywhere else. It’s deeply upsetting.”

Wixen is not alone. It seems everyone holds the same opinion and concern.

Cinémas Palme d’Or officially opened its doors October 10, 2003. The last day to see movies at the theater will be June 30.

“It’s a family here,” said Melanie Barbe, Cinémas Palme d’Or General Manager. “We have really built up our clientele. We know many by name. I worry about our Snowbirds who may not know about our closing.” Barbe has been with Cinémas Palme d’Or for over ten years. The theater has 20 employees and many have worked there for multiple years. “The staff is all very close. We know the owners and they know us.”

For the owners of Cinémas Palme d’Or, it hasn’t been the profits that kept them doing business, but the love of movies as quality entertainment. The partners include ESPN radio personality Steve Mason, Hollywood producer Alise Mauritzson and film buyer Brian Tabor.

Together they formed Flagship Theaters, LLC. Actor Bryan Cranston came on board a year later after he showed his independent movie “Last Chance” which he directed starring his wife, actress Robin Dearden. Cranston said it was always a dream of his to own a movie theater.

The regular movie Q&As at Cinémas Palme d’Or have always been an audience favorite.

The theater has held over 400 Q&A screenings that have included actors, directors, producers and writers. Some of the in-person talent includes: Helen Mirren, David O. Russell, Viola Davis, Jonah Hill, Brie Larsen, Aaron Paul, Andy Garcia, Gena Rowlands, Alexander Payne, Virginia Madsen, Rob Reiner and Bob Odenkirk among many others.

For an independent theater that focuses on new films in all genres, the partners chose the name Cinémas Palme d’Or, referencing the top honor prize presented at the Cannes film festival. “We thought this was apropos and would appeal to the sophistication of our Palm Desert audience,” said Brian Tabor. “With the wide variety of films we show and special events, it’s like a film festival experience every week.”

Over the 13 years, approximately 2,000 different films have been shown across Cinémas Palme d’Or’s ten screens. That’s about 228,000 individual screenings. Besides studio produced films, 3D, 4K, independent movies and foreign films, Cinémas Palme d’Or streams live performances from London’s National Theater, as well as performances from the Royal Opera and Bolshoi Ballet and other wonderful big screen cultural events.

screenings for Paws & Hearts where patrons brought their dogs to the movies – usually a specially selected animal centric film.

Before Cinémas Palme d’Or closes, the theater will show “Art on Screen” featuring the works of Renoir and Van Gogh.

According to Tabor, who is also the Operations Manager, he estimates 3.236 million people have passed through Cinémas Palme d’Or doors. He says what he finds most gratifying is to hear that an audience loved the movie. Tabor is a second-generation theater owner.

Cinémas Palme d’Or changed the local movie-going experience by being the first CV movie house to offer in theater beer and wine for adults. If you’ve seen one movie at Cinémas Palme d’Or, you’ve seen the promo – a slow pouring red wine splashing into a pristine glass.

Delicious even if you don’t drink. Tabor had the ad specifically made for the theater.

With so much love for the theater, its content and its employees, many find it hard to understand why Cinémas Palme d’Or would close when it seems to have hit its stride.

In an open letter to the trade publication BigScreen Cinema Guide announcing Cinémas Palme d’Or closing, the partners said: “You have been the most loyal patrons we could ever hope for and together we have built one of the most original movie theatres in America.”

“Independent theatres like ours have fought for survival over the past decade. We are very proud of Cinémas Palme d’Or, and the struggle has been worth it. We have been able to play an important role in changing the industry, and making it easier for independent theatres, now and in the future, to be successful.”

When Cinémas Palme d’Or first opened its doors as an independent theater it faced the challenge of procuring new film releases from the major studios. Referred to as “clearances,” large movie theater chains have studio deals where they can lockout smaller competing movie houses. In the case with Cinémas Palme d’Or, Rancho Mirage’s Cinemark requested exclusive rights to screen studio titles, depriving Cinémas Palme d’Or bigger and potentially higher grossing films.

Even owner Bryan Cranston, as an award winning actor and Oscar© nominee, could not get some of his movies into his own theater.

Boldly and Bravely, Cinémas Palme d’Or took the theater and studio system of keeping small independent theaters out of the distribution loop, to court. After only 3 years in business, the lawsuit was not only necessary, important and precedent setting, but expensive.

As with any new business, the first several years of keeping the doors open became even more of a major challenge.

Situated on the lower level and on the backside of Westfield mall, the theaters were – are -- hard to find. There are people who are still surprised to discover Cinémas Palme d’Or! There is no access to the theater or signs inside the shopping center indicating a movie theater exists. There is no Cinémas Palme d’Or marquee on highway 111 or the surrounding major streets. Also, there is no elevator access from the second floor food court.

The Westfield mall, as a landlord, has played no part in helping or supporting the independent theater. In fact, it’s fair to say they

have hurt the theater’s business.

While struggling to build their clientele, Cinémas Palme d’Or also faced changing technology. Projection and sound equipment was improving. And film was evolving, requiring more expensive industry upgrades like 3D. Soon the celluloid film reels became digital files.

Keeping up with the technology was costly.

Cinémas Palme d’Or made the improvements a priority in order to keep their discerning audiences happy as well as staying up-to-date, viable and competitive.

Since the beginning, the partners have never shared in profits, because the money flow went back into the business.

Without access to studio blockbusters and hindered by Westfield’s management, Cinémas Palme d’Or still hit their stride and made the theater a shinning success and valued community experience.

As of today, the battle over “clearances” continues. Twentieth Century Fox has taken Cinémas Palme d’Or’s side and will no longer honor Cinemark’s clearances. Universal Pictures

has just announced they will release their much anticipated film “Warcraft” without any clearances. It seems only a matter of time until clearances will be a thing of the past.

However, for Cinémas Palme d’Or, it will be too late. This June, the theater’s lease is up, and Westfield refused to consider a renewal.

Westfield has thrown out one of the mall’s most cherished tenants.

The owners of Cinémas Palme d’Or created and demonstrated how to run a quality independent movie house that truly served the demographics of its surrounding community.

Cinémas Palme d’Or found their niche and discovered a family of movie lovers.

“They’re the best,” said Bruce Whitman with his wife Ginny about Cinémas Palme d’Or. “The valley is not going to be the same without them.”

From the trade publication notice Cinémas Palme d’Or owners said: “We could have never expected just how successful Cinémas Palme d’Or would be. There is something very special in the bond that we have developed with our devoted customers. Together we have been able to celebrate filmmaking as an art. This has been a golden time for us. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for the memories.”

Movies are among our most shared human experiences. Cinémas Palme d’Or’s extended movie loving family is grateful for the hours of pleasure, diversion, insight, adventure, wonder, intellectual stimulation, laughs and tears.

Cinémas Palme d’Or will be a part of Coachella Valley’s history. It will be missed.

The Bully in You… Put It In Park!

T

he National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that road rage “involves a criminal act of violence, whereas aggressive driving can range from tailgating to speeding to running red lights.”

The real root of aggressive driving lies within each of us reminds Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. Drivers can cope by taking an honest look at their driving behavior and attempting to reduce their stress level behind the wheel.

Get your Z’s. We all know how cranky we get without enough sleep. It makes us prone to feelings of annoyance, resentment and even anger.

Plan ahead. Do you regularly whiz through your morning routine in a whirlwind of chaos, trying to make up time while on the road? Extra time equals calmer driving.

Many of us love and identify with our cars, but sometimes you can take the “car as extension of self” idea too seriously. You’re not as impressive as you think, so let it go... No matter how much power you’ve got under the hood, your vehicle is first and foremost a mode of transportation, not a weapon.

Listen to relaxing music. It will make you less pumped up for action. Breath deep.

It’s not all about you... Perhaps another driver cut you off. Or the car in front of you is braking erratically.

Before you assume the driver is getting off on your rising anger levels, realize that you, as an individual, are not the target. Don’t take things so personally.

Driving with anger ages you. It creates frown lines and people most prone to anger are almost three times more likely to have a heart attack than those with low anger. Other health risks seen in those who display hostility include obesity, depression and

stroke. Not only will giving into anger not resolve an irritating situation, it can increase the risk of retaliation. Think to yourself, “Is making my point worth endangering my life?” Learn to “let it (and them) go.”

Driving a car makes people feel more isolated and protected, allowing them to act in ways they would normally find embarrassing. You look like an Ass when you drive like one!

Take the self-test. Do any of the following statements sound like you?

- I regularly exceed the speed limit in order to get to work on time.

- I tailgate other drivers, especially those who sit in the left lane.

- I flash my lights and honk my horn to let drivers know when they annoy me.

- I verbally abuse other drivers whether they can hear me or not.

- I frequently weave in and out of traffic to get ahead.

- I feel the need to set bad drivers straight.

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you’re driving may qualify as aggressive. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Author Rebecca Solnit offers some tough advice that I think you could use. “Pain serves a purpose,” she says. “Without it you are in danger. WHEN IN DOUBt

I

t is without a doubt we contradict or thoughts. Doubt is transfixed between two contradictory propositions. We should learn to juxtapose the contradictions.

Doubt is a lack of certainty, trust, and leaves you feeling indecisive. At some point when you arrive a decision you may doubt whether it was the correct choice.

Can you imagine a life without doubt?

Wouldn’t this be revolutionary? It is truly about overcoming and possessing a deaf ear to the little voices we hear in our heads.

Have you often wondered if other people hear the negative voices too? Guess what?

Yes, everyone is afflicted with these voices.

You have a choice to listen or rebuke the negativity. When you commence living by and doing what you are told by the pesky voices you’ve immediately placed yourself in bondage. I would consider this setting yourself up for failure.

Conquering self-doubt is not a simple task. You must make an agreement with self that you can do anything you put your mind to. Any feelings of uncertainty need to be expunged or you will not be able to move forward in your endeavors. When we doubt ourselves it can be the number one obstacle in living your life with purpose.

When we look at some of the most successful people in the World, at one time or another they doubted their abilities.

However, at the end of the day they would not be where they are in life had they

continued on the destructive path of selfdoubt. Plus, doubting yourself and hanging in limbo isn’t comfortable and can lead to anxiety and depression.

How do you know you doubt yourself?

You may use phrases such as, “I’m not sure I can do that.” Or, “That task seems too hard and I’ll probably fail anyway.” It is a good idea to ponder where these thoughts are originating and why? If you have never attempted the task previously… how do you know whether or not you can accomplish your goal? You thought it, why not achieve it?

Living fear based will get you each time.

If you fear you cannot, you will not. Write down your dreams, goals, and aspirations.

Make a timeline as to when and where you would like to be in 3, 6, 9, and 12 months.

From this point forward compose a vision board and project where you see yourself in years to come. If all of this sounds overwhelming you should start with baby steps.

Be honest and recognize your self-doubt.

What exactly is the HCG diet?

t’s been around for years, since the 1950’s to be exact. We’ve all heard about it but what is it and how does it work? HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is a hormone produced during pregnancy. One of its functions is to ensure the growing fetus receives enough nutrients to grow and develop normally.

It allows the mother’s body to use stored body fat for nutrients and energy despite her intake. This is why women can have “morning sickness”, not eat and the baby does not suffer. Pregnancy is the only time HCG is found in the body.

Dr. ATW Simeons discovered in the 1950’s that small doses of HCG given to overweight individuals (men and women) decreased their appetite, and made them lose inches specifically around their hips, thighs, buttocks and stomachs. ’ve never been excited about a doctor’s appointment, but I find myself looking forward to meeting an orthopedic surgeon next week. The back story is several years ago I finished my knee off during a rigorous hiking regimen. Having developed knee injuries dating back to my college cheerleading days, it was just a matter of time before my right hinge-joint would up and quit on me.

I’ve put off surgery for a few years because I’m not in severe pain, just limited in what I can accomplish. For example, running a 5K is out of the question, but to be honest, even with two good knees you would never find me in a sprinting event. I needed to find an enticing reason to gear up for a surgery that according to many is far from easy, but worth it.

It finally happened thanks to my friend, Irma, one of my favorite people. She is a funloving character full of love, compassion, and trustworthiness all intermingled with a good measure of mischief. When I read on Facebook that Irma was taking tap dancing lessons, my intuition gave me a firm nudge as if to shout, “That is the reason to get your knee fixed.”

Right! I have a fair sense of rhythm and have always wanted to wear buckle-strap shoes clad with aluminum taps that will make some

noise! I immediately reached for the phone and scheduled the long overdue appointment.

Okay, you may not be interested in my future tap dancing career, but hear my message. It begins with procrastination. I recently read a statement that resonated with me. “Procrastination is a delay tactic having the ability to choke your dreams and abort the plans.” I doubt dragging my feet about a knee replacement was choking my dreams, but it was causing a very slight limp and inhibiting my ability to fully participate in some events.

In the words of Victor Kiam, “Procrastination is opportunity’s assassin.”

True enough, however; here is the core of my message: when procrastination strikes, keep drilling down until you find an undeniable reason to stop dragging your feet and start taking action. Find the impetus to get you off the dime and begin engaging in what makes you the best you can be. Whether the exploit involves something as significant as using your gifts to change the lives of others, or simply tapping your feet to ‘Uptown Funk,” uncover a motive to face your fears and get the job done.
