f you can drive it, they can wrap it. If you can fly it, they can wrap it. If you can stand on top of a Fiat in the middle of the Honda Center for the LA KISS Arena Football team, and play a kickass guitar solo while swinging your rock and roll hair, well...they can definitely wrap the Fiat. Even with all “that” going on, no one is going to miss who sponsored the show, thanks to DesertWraps.com. One of the most intriguing and creative marketing offices I have had the pleasure of visiting is DesertWraps.com and its located right here in the middle of the Coachella Valley. I’m telling you right now, there is not a business that cannot benefit from getting to know what this extremely creative local graphics company can do to represent and grow your business brilliantly. MEET DESERTWRAPS.COM Allow me to introduce you to the owner and founder, Soterios Anagnostou. You wouldn¹t know it to look at him, but Soterios Anagnostou has over 25 years of business ownership and marketing and branding experience under his belt. His

entrepreneurial spirit is contagious, his energy perpetual and his drive to help other businesses succeed, intrinsic. Soterios knows firsthand that businesses not only need to be seen, but they need to be seen in a light that separates them from their competition. Recognizing that need 12 years ago, he created a hybrid-marketing agency AdRhythm Advertising and Design, through which he developed DesertWraps. com in Palm Desert. DesertWraps.com is an affordable, tangible and cost effective way to brand and market local businesses. Their full time creative team creates eye pooping designs and within their facility they have the equipment and talent to print, fabricate and install everything they design. WHAT THEY WRAP The work DesertWraps.com has done for local businesses is stunning and is why they have become the premier vehicle wraps company in the valley. But they don¹t stop at designing advertising wraps for vehicles, RVs, boats, golf carts and fleets. They are continue to page 5

experts at large format design and printing, event branding, and interior branding. They will wrap anything that can be wrapped. Chrome ford raptors, custom designed train containers, off road vehicles for national brands, utility and traffic boxes for our local cities and the walls, floors, desks, counters, doors and windows of all kinds of local businesses and even some residences. They can also design and build custom marketing kiosks and retail point of sale displays that help drive traffic and sales. This company’s creative capacity to design, develop and produce cost effective marketing solutions is endless and downright fun. It is business branding and marketing on steroids. DesertWraps.com can take any business from low profile to high profile, all the while keeping their focus on the ultimate priority: provoking a response from the potential customer. THE MISSION “I don¹t expect to get rich doing this,” shares the impassioned owner and team leader. “At the end of the day, I just want people to say, thank you. You have provided me with a great product that has helped my

business grow. My priority is the quality of service and the relationship I build with the client by providing a cost effective solution to help them grow. Anybody can put a wrap on a vehicle, but the message it conveys and how it’s perceived is what should come first and foremost; that is essential brand marketing.” DesertWraps.com is fully equipped to do this and continues to grow their facility to ensure that they can do it all for you here locally. With Soterios’ education and hands on experience, his creative team, top of the line technology and equipment, it is safe to say that DesertWraps.com provides a superior product and exceptional service without having to drive 120 miles out of town. CREATIVITY AT IT’S FINEST OR IT’S WACKIEST - YOU DECIDE One of the craziest things I’ve seen this company wrap is a restored helicopter. DesertWraps.com actually took a high definition photo of genuine cowhide then reproduced it graphically to cover Steve Maloney’s “Ride-Em-Copter Modern Sculpture”. He took a beat up helicopter, had DesertWraps.com wrap it in the cow

hide print they created and then bedazzled the rest of it with jewels, crystals, a full bar and all kinds of interesting accessories. He opened his sculpture with Heather James Fine Art during Modernism Week at the Palm Springs Fine Art Fair. They have used their incredible graphics technology to launch InteriorBranding. com, which will work to help clients and designers to “Brand” corporate spaces, retail establishments and restaurants. They have already created wall murals for Christopher Kennedy at Appetitio Italian Deli and the Christopher Kennedy Show House for Modernism Week, incredible interior branding displays for Fiesta Ford and Palm Springs Cycle and will soon do the same for Sequoia Wealth Management, LLC., opening in Palm Springs. If you were fortunate enough to attend the Desert Showdown at Big Horn Country Club and La Quinta Resort you would have seen DesertWraps.com event branding in full force for the Will Powered Golf Classic

May 8 to May 14, 2014

and Desert Smash Tennis Showdown for Cancer for College. The event was hosted by Will Ferrell & Kevin Spacey and helped raise nearly 1 million dollars for the foundation. Bottom line, if you can take a picture of it, if you can stick a piece of tape to it, if it consists of solid matter and molecules, there’s a really good chance DesertWraps. com can cover it, reproduce it and use it to colorfully grab the attention of those consumers you want to see you. In this economy small businesses across the country have had it rough, and with our seasonal clientele, businesses here in the desert have to work twice as hard. Paying to market or advertise a business can feel more like a high-risk crapshoot than an investment. Still, the need to be seen by potential customers, and to drive those customers to your business, is vital. “DesertWraps.com provides solutions to GET BUSINESS NOW,” says Soterios. “We become partners in growing our client¹s business and they become clients for life.” I don’t see any reason why any business owner or marketer shouldn’t take a few minutes to check out this resource right here in your own neighborhood. They have alleviated the need for business marketers, event promoters, and business owners to drive out of town for this specialty service and product. Stop by their office and see for yourself all the things DesertWraps.com has done and can do. This is an exciting and very visible way to stand above everyone else in traditional media and it’s RIGHT HERE IN THE DESRT year round. HARD ROCK HOTEL PALM SPRINGS

See what La Quinta has to offer the Coachella Valley this spring and summer!

L

ooking for things to do with school wrapping up and summer on its way? The City of La Quinta’s Community Services Department always has lots of fun planned for its residents and neighbors. The La Quinta Community Services Department has popular activities lined up, from the family-favorite flicks in their Moonlight Movies series to a tour of the valley’s best courses for golfers. These free and low-cost events bring a number of summer entertainment options to the community!“The programs and classes we offer are open to everyone that wants to learn something new or just have a great time in our city,” said Recreation Supervisor, Tustin Larson. “We want our residents and everyone who lives in the Coachella Valley to take a look at the classes, and kids and family events that La Quinta has to offer.” The Moonlight Movie screenings are a great way to kick off the weekend with family time on a Friday night. The twilight screenings start at 8 p.m. or later (depending on sunset that day) and feature recent box office movies. Bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on and let the kids stretch out as they watch the big screen hits. There are vendors for snacks or bring a picnic dinner. The screenings take place at different times throughout the summer, but take a break for the month of June and resume in mid-July. The upcoming schedule includes “Saving Mr. Banks” on May 2 at La Quinta Park (corner of Adams Street and Westward Ho Drive, across from the high school); “The Nut Job,” May 16 at Monticello Park at Fred Waring Drive and Jefferson Street; “Captain America – First Avenger,” July 11 at Fritz Burns Pool at Avenue 52 and Avenida Bermudas; “The Avengers,” July 25 at Fritz Burns Pool; “Man of Steel,” Aug. 6, Fritz Burns Pool; and “The Amazing Spiderman,” Aug. 22 at Fritz Burns Pool. Living in an area with so many public and private pools, learning to swim and basic pool safety is an essential part of desert life,

6

which is why La Quinta has teamed up with the Family YMCA of the Desert to offer swim classes at the Fritz Burns Pool. Upcoming classes include swim lessons and a youth triathlon that includes swimming, biking and a run through a kidfriendly course. The next set of swim lessons at Fritz Burns pool run May 12 through 28 from 5 to 5:45 p.m. Monday and Wednesday. There is also an adult Water Aerobics class from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Monday and Wednesday and both Pre-Swim Team and a Stroke Clinic offered from 6 to 7p.m. Monday and Wednesday. Registration for all classes is at the Family YMCA of the Desert at 43-930 San Pablo Ave. in Palm Desert. Contact: (760) 3419622; www.ymcaofthedesert.org The YMCA Triathlon (Y TRI) at Fritz Burns Park is for kids 5 to 8 years old and takes place at 8 a.m. May 17. The kids will learn to swim, bike and run through a safe triathlon course. It’s a non-competitive event that starts with a swim in the pool, then a trackfree bike course and a run in the park.

Participants need a swimsuit, a bike in good working order and bike helmet, along with a good pair of running shoes. The goal of the race is to create a positive physical activity experience. Each participant will receive a Y Tri finisher’s certificate and a bike helmet

for the first 60 pre-registered participants. Day of registration is at 8 a.m., with the event start at 9 a.m. The cost is $10 per child. Pre-registration is at the Family Y in Palm Desert. Golfers can take advantage of playing some of the Coachella Valley’s best courses with discounted greens fees with the Summer Golf Tour that runs Saturdays from May 31 to Aug. 23. The schedule and prices haven’t been announced, but players can find information on the “tour” at communityservices@la-quinta.org. For golfers who prefer a disc to a set of clubs, the Disc Golf Tournament at 6 p.m. May 31 at La Quinta Park is open to players of all ages and experience levels. It’s $10 per player. The park is at Westward Ho Drive and Adams Street. For information and sign-ups, call (760) 777-7090 or go to communityservices@la-quinta.org For additional information on all upcoming La Quinta Community Services Department sponsored activities, contact Tustin Larson at the Community Services Department at (760) 777-7090 or tlarson@ la-quinta.org.

The NFL Draft: The Place Where Kids Become Rich And The Rich Act Like Kids

I

’ll be in New York City as you read this, likely enjoying a jog through Central Park, I can bring you back some authentic NYC litter if you like. There will also a record 30 NFL draft prospects that will be in NYC with me for the 2014 NFL Players Selection Meeting, aka, the draft. It’s the most watched, talked about and debated draft among the top sports leagues. In fact, ratings last year were better than some of the playoffs games in the NHL and NBA. And perhaps rightfully so, the pendulum of fate, emotion and impact swings so widely from the first pick to the 256th that fans boo the kids coming out of college who have no control over where their name is called and this comes after weeks of watching grownmen spit bald-faced lies in the media to protect their own team’s interests. The draft we see today is an amazing spectacle created by the NFL for today’s ADD fans and has evolved slowly to get there. It’s no longer just the hype of Hollywood movies, this past year, we actually had a movie made about it, called Draft Day. Gone are the days where players are unknown until they put their NFL uniforms on. Now we get undulating analysis from every media outlet that pulls a talking head out of their mother’s basements long enough to offer thoughts on a defensive end from Middle Tennessee State, then plunges back into the dark film room to unearth another gem of a ‘sleeper.’ The history of the NFL draft is fascinating. While today, the kids picked in the top rounds are celebrated and the hopes of a franchise rest on their shoulders, but 2 of the first 3 top overall selections never played in the NFL. In 1936 the format began with the Philadelphia Eagles selecting Jay Berwanger, the Heisman winning halfback that previous year as the top pick. He never played a down. In fact, the first draft for the Eagles resulted in 0 players that contributed to the team that year. Now, just getting drafted is “an honor.” Just as Mr. Irrelevant, the guy who waits until everyone else is called before hearing his name. It’s the name coined for the kid picked dead last and thanks to a charity in Orange

8

County, gets the biggest party of all draft picks. It’s true, only 15 of the “Mr. Irrelevants” called since 1967 have played in a regular season NFL game, but that doesn’t stop the celebration of hearing your name called. Even if it is last. Dead last. The draft has changed drastically in every way from team preparation, to prospect preparation, to national television and exposure. Yet, it’s remarkably remained unchanged in one way. It’s an inexact science. Predictably unpredictable yet every team scout and executive wraps themselves in a cocoon of information for the sake of believing THEIR picks will pan out. The best part about the draft is not the talent evaluation or the understanding of building a football team, but rather, the chances of a late round pick developing into a Hall-of-Famer is as good as a top-pick being out of the league after 4 years of futility. The fact there are no guarantees is exactly what makes the draft so compelling. While the stories of Roger Staubach serving our nation for 5 years after the Cowboys drafted him or Tom Brady hearing quarterbacks named Spergon Wynn or Giovanni Carmazzi called well before him, the draft results in fantastic stories of expectations surpassed and expectations dashed and somewhere in the balance are kids like Russell Wilson or Navarro Bowman, who were drafted by teams who knew how to utilize their talents and make the most of those selections. So I’ll be broadcasting live from Radio City Music Hall Thursday, May 8th and Friday May 9th, to tell the stories of those heading to the next level and hopefully offer the insight into who’s going to be someone we talk about for years to come. Julie Buehler hosts the Coachella Valley’s most popular sports talk radio show, “Buehler’s Day Off” every day from 3-6 on 1010 KXPS, the valley’s all sports station. She’s an avid gym rat, slightly sarcastic and more likely to recite Steve Young’s career passing stats than American Idol winners. Tune in M-F 3-6 pst at www.team1010.com or watch the show on Ustream.

Clippers 1 - Drama 0

J

ust as the Clippers stood together in silently protesting team owner Donald Sterling’s racist remarks by turning their warmup shirts inside out prior to Game 4, they excelled as one, particularly down the stretch in the 126-121 victory. Striped necktie loosened, shirt collar unbuttoned, Clippers coach Doc Rivers, the undeniable leader of a team negotiating its way through turmoil, renewed hopes and empty tanks past 11 p.m. Saturday inside the Staples Center. He commended his players on the Game 7 win over the Warriors, a contest that inched toward closure several times before swinging back open. Rivers counted three times he believed it was over, then explained his explosive celebration by the bench. “They were almost just sitting there in shock,” Rivers said. “I wanted them to exhale for a second, because all we have is a second.” Once derailed by longtime owner Donald Sterling’s racist remarks, the Clippers team that protested silently in Game 4 excelled as one with the series on the line, vanquishing the Warriors with the 126-121 victory and advancing to face the second-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder next. It was not lost on Rivers the unique mettle test his team passed, having listened to Sterling’s “hateful feelings,” as NBA commissioner referred to Sterling’s tape-recorded words before banishing Sterling for life, and reflected on them. Rivers learned new dimensions to his roster by absorbing the situation in full. “I needed to exhale, too,” Rivers said. “This was a hard week. Was it a week? It felt like two months. I just needed to smile.” Clippers point guard Chris Paul, the crafty, charismatic liaison for Rivers on the floor, maintained that the team’s focus was solely on Game 7, no previous issues. From strings of text messages exchanged in the hours before the game to the ability of teammates to play off each other’s strengths, Paul (22 points; 14 assists) acknowledged the bond forged in difficult times. He gained headlines as the president of the National Basketball Players Association when the Sterling news first broke, but starred as the unflappable facilitator and finished on his own when necessary in a fullteam effort. His best guess at how he knew to handle the chaos off the court was unplugging

his phone for several days, leaving outsiders’ messages unanswered until the series was in hand. Paul saved his energy for Game 7, probing for holes, pushing past defenders despite an ailing right hamstring and locating the likes of center DeAndre Jordan for an emphatic finish off an alley oop. It was a return to normalcy, if not full health, for Paul. It was also the closing effort, including a crucial 3-pointer from the top of the key in the fourth quarter, that the Clippers needed to escape the Warriors’ clutches as Stephen Curry continued to charge back into the final seconds. “This was an NBA thing,” Curry said. “Ever NBA player felt emotions.” It wasn’t always pretty, but the pairing of Warriors and Clippers proved to be a compelling matchup over the course of the seven games. Aside from the Sterling stigma, there was Curry knocking down seven 3-pointers in Game 4 and no love lost on either side, the disdain best exemplified by Warriors forward Jermaine O’Neal taking exception to Clippers forward Glen Davis’ “dirty play” in Game 6. There was a contest played without corporate sponsorships visible at the Staples Center and a Game 7 that featured actor Billy Crystal kissing television analyst Reggie Miller during a timeout. “It stings right now,” Curry said. “We don’t feel like we have any regrets.” Earlier in the night, Rivers referred to the clincher as “a game of freedom.” He noted that there could be a relaxed nature to his team should the players choose to look at the final steps that way. He also knew that closure did not always accompany the final score. In June 2010, his Celtics fell to the Lakers inside the Staples Center at the conclusion of a Game 7, losing the NBA title just like that. “Thank God we don’t have to look up at those banners tonight,” Rivers said. Few will forget the opening round series between the Warriors and Clippers for a number of reasons, but the Clippers were determined to pivot quickly. The players and coaches were given new reading assignments afterward as books featuring opposition research on the Thunder were left in their lockers. They will hear the same questions regarding Sterling in new ways moving forward, but the crux of the situation is that they have Paul and Rivers leading the way, free to carry the Clippers as far as they can go. “I’m going to remember this game for a long time,” Rivers said.

Deadend Paradox

Trini Lopez

D

eadend Paradox is quite possibly one the best bands flying under our desert music scene’s radar, but not for long. This band and their music, born and bred here in the Coachella Valley, cut their teeth on the same ideals and punk rock influences from which their musical upperclassmen developed the infamous Stoner Rock genre. All three self-taught musicians fell on the sword of original music from the beginning with the song “Paradox” (hence their name). The latter part of their name, Deadend, came from the skateboard team that drummer Eddie Airada was part of at the time. Since 2008, this power trio has been pumping out a quality catalog of pulse altering, uniquely melodic and lyrically strong songs. While some of their music may bear essences of reggae or even hip-hop, to their very roots, they are at their core, high powered rock. Eddie Airada, Drums: A hybrid athlete behind the kit, Eddie plays more beats inside a measure than a ten year old rattle snake during pre-strike, and he’s just as deadly. It’s a little disconcerting because he makes it all look like a brisk walk in the park. He’s tireless, inhumanly accurate and precise, with a touch on every beat that brings out everything his kit has to offer. And he does it, by all appearances, without breaking a sweat. Not a showy player, Eddie commands your attention through sheer intensity. Completely self-taught, I asked who his role models were. While being very eclectic and listening to many different drummers of varying genres, the influence of one highly respected drummer seems to shine through in his playing the most - veteran basher, Byron McMackin of Pennywise. “He’s one of my favorite drummers to watch and learn from. The way he plays is so fast and technical, it’s crazy.” Funny…that’s exactly how one would describe Eddie’s playing. Chris Dub, Bass: Alex and Eddie had started jamming together in high school and had played around town as the band, Stone Fox. 2008 brought Chris into the band, and within two weeks of auditioning, he had to play his

12

first gig. It was his first punk rock show, where he was told that he “looked more bro than punk”. He still does. An HVAC tech by day, Chris could also double as the band’s bouncer based on size alone. Looking like he just got transferred to the desert from a college football team in the Midwest, Chris doesn’t try to “look” the part. Instead he just brings it. He is definitely the most physical on stage. “I don’t know. The music just moves me. I don’t really do that, the music and the crowd do it to me,” he shared. His bass playing encompasses a combination of styles ranging from funk slap to using octaves and fifths littered with meaty yet tasteful, melodic fills. Between these two gate keepers of rhythm, there’s no telling who is keeping who in the pocket. They just truly play as one entity creating one of the cleanest and most powerful rhythm teams in the valley. Alex Antonio, Lead Guitar and Vocals: Zach Huskey, co-founder of the internationally renowned Dali’s Llama, singled Alex out as one of the better young guitar players in the valley. “He’s well rounded; not stuck in any one style. You can have a conversation with him and talk about Johnny Thunder (late, great rock/punk rock guitarist best known for his work with the New York Dolls and The Heartbreakers) and he knows who that is and has studied him. He’s alright. He’s a good songwriter and a good singer...he’s one of the better young cats in our music scene.” Bringing both lead guitar and vocals together, there are times when you can barely differentiate the guitar from the man as Alex matches the melody line on his guitar with vocal tone and pitch perfection. When talking about music, Alex will be quick to tell you, “The bands I loved were saying something that I was feeling. They weren’t up there just for show.” As the main lyricist for the band, Alex helps Deadend Paradox replicate this ideal. When I asked what song was his favorite, lyrically, he named, “She Came to Me.” “It was a first for me... an exploration in writing. Before, I had been writing everything from personal experience, so I attempted to write from someone else’s perspective. The lyrics are fictional, and are a kind of a twisted skew on Romeo and Juliet. I like the tragedy of it. Looking from the outside, looking in on an obsession. He finally gets her and suddenly, the obsession gets a lot darker.”

She Came to Me You came to me so beautifully and I can’t hide Your heart’s your sleeve, so hard to please but I can try A stranger’s touch don’t need too much to keep me tied You came to me so beautifully now it’s all gone And I can show you the world and make you love what you see I’ll never do what you want, just know that it’s ok You’re love to me is so discrete, I like your kind You’re honesty when I’m in deep, your skin don’t lie Parade of lust, the thing of touch can be defined You came to me so beautifully, now it’s all gone So I can show you the world and make you love what you see, I’ll never do what you want, I only do what I please. And if I locked you into this thing that just isn’t true and hid you all to myself, Just know that it’s ok Chris explained their songwriting process: “It’s a light science. We start with just hanging out and catching up. And when the right energy hits, usually within 5-10 minutes, we start constructing a song. Then Alex just adds his bad ass vocals to it. We’ll record it on our phones and fine tune it. That’s just the way it’s been working out best over the last couple of years.”

These three individual musicians come together in a “oneness” that is a well-oiled machine, but with a huge heart. This either reflects some kind of other worldly psychic connection, or an incredible work ethic. My guess, it’s the latter. Either way, like the cream in Eric Clapton’s coffee, they have the potential to rise to the top in an industry flooded with DIY labels and projects lacking in character, ethics and depth. In-spite of the amount of solid material this band has composed, you’d be hard pressed to find any reoccurring themes between the songs with two exceptions: They are all genuinely good and are all best when played loud. Deadend Paradox delivers with the passionate intent of driving the music into their audience’s very core, and they succeed in doing so with precision. “We are in the process of signing our own record label, Verdin Entertainment, LLC,” Chris shared proudly. “It’s in the process of becoming legally finalized. We’re getting ready to take that next step. In the next couple months we’re going to lock down and complete our album. Our goal is to grow our following and work together with other musicians. We care about what we’re doing, but also care about what everyone in the crowd is feeling. We want to cheer them up or pump them up, whatever they got coming to them. We want to support everyone who supports us,” he added. “As long as your hearts in the right place, it all comes together. You got to be friends and family first, and actually like hanging with each other. Then the music just comes out.” You can check out Deadend Paradox along with local favorites, Blasting Echo, Pictures from Eden and CIVX (all of whom have been nominated in “Coachella Valley Weekly’s Music Awards”) this Saturday night, May 10th at The Hood Bar in Palm Desert. Blasting Echo will fire up the evening around 9 pm. They’ll be followed by Pictures from Eden, Deadend Paradox and finally, CIVX who recently played the Tachevah, Palm Springs Block Party, and the 2014 Coachella Music and Arts Festival.

“He’s NOT Making a Come Back. He Never Left and He’s Here to Stay”

had received the invitation from our resident, award winning film maker, Chip Miller, to attend the world premiere, celebration and screening of music legend, Trini Lopez’s, “Fly Like an Eagle”. I was intrigued to see what the infamous, original Latin pop star would be bringing us via music video. I had no reason to expect the phenom to be present at the event. I did, however, relish the opportunity to familiarize myself with Chip Miller’s work and future projects as well as further my knowledge regarding Desert C.A. M. Studios. And, of course, there would be great networking opportunities. As I sat in my car parked outside of what appeared to be a large, beautiful private home in La Quinta, I watched well dressed and beautifully coiffed attendees enter the gala event. I suddenly felt ill-prepared and a bit intimidated. After all, I didn’t really know anyone there and had never met the host in person. My sudden siege of timidity nearly caused me to message in my regrets. As I walked into the home, turned state of the art production studio, it was soon obvious that my fears were unsubstantiated. The women were fascinating, open and funny, the men intelligent, courteous and obliging. A stranger among friends, these beautiful people introduced themselves to me and shared their fun personal stories with the artist we were there to celebrate. But none were more endearing than one very special woman who saw me sitting alone momentarily, and made a point to introduce herself to me. The beautiful and mild mannered angel introduced herself with outstretched hand, “Hi. My name is Oralee...Oh, you’re with CV Weekly? Fabulous!... Me? Oh, I’m Trini’s personal assistant of 18 years...”. We were not alone for long. As she began to tell me stories of working with her long-time associate, employer and now dear friend, she, like a magnet, drew her own crowd. The conversations were captivating, all painting a lovely light around the man of honor, who though he loved the ladies, had

never married. There were stories of his adventures swimming in the Palace Pool in England, detailed explanations of the photo of him smiling calmly as he was smothered by hundreds of adoring fans in Japan. All of this was taking place in the room that held the original guitars Gibson had asked Trini to design. With this being his 65th album, with an international career that encompassed both music and acting, there was no question when Oralee explained that she had been trying to write a book about him, but “there is just so much to tell!” Suddenly, we looked up simultaneously, and there he was, Trini Lopez, dawning a white straw hat instead of his infamous black felt with his blue sunglasses on, smiling, hugging and kissing everyone, greeting each by name. I introduced myself to this charismatic gentleman who was sincerely interested to meet me. As he and the crowd around him began to move to the studio where his video would be shown, he grabbed my wrist gently and said, “Lisa is it? Shall we go see a video?” As the video played, I could not help but watch him as well. He watched the screen intently but did not stop moving and grooving to it until it came to an end. I’ve never met such a positive and vivacious man. One almost forgot he was a man on the backside of 70. It certainly seemed to slip his mind. The video was a buffet of color against beautiful desert imagery from the La Quinta hills to Salvation Mountain, surrounding an artist who has not lost a fraction of a beat and sounds better today, than ever.

He, being very much himself, commanded the screen that surrounded him with the contrasts of gritty brown mountains and shocking blue sky. The song, its arrangement and production were a beautiful blend of contemporary rock and smooth jazz with Trini’s guitar prowess showing its infinite character. Yet it was his vocal delivery of the song by Steve Miller that enchanted me the most. It floated along with the melody in gorgeous soft velvet tones. Time was unable to steel anything from his effortless range but instead, deepened his sense of grace and intuition as he made the 1976 rock classic his own. He brought to the song a sense of hope and brightness with a more staccato and upbeat delivery than the original. The optimistic flavor of the vocals was matched by his youthful, energetic movement. Brilliantly augmenting this already inspirational moment, the artful and intuitive cinematography, flawless

editing and stellar direction and production delivered the dynamic punch that made this so much more than a music video. It was a spiritual, symphonic experience, perfectly framing this very special artist’s relevance, place and purpose in today’s music. This was nothing less than a labor of love for all those responsible for bringing this vision into creation. After the video ended, I leaned over and said to Trini, “You still got it!” to which he winningly replied, “You think so?” This production was a fantastic introduction to an album that is as perfect an accompaniment to moments of relaxation as it is to encourage that much needed second wind. It is a fantastic choice to play while entertaining, or to encourage a beautiful, smile enhanced, dinner for two. The entire album resonates with the easy going, uplifting, center of joy that is the simple nature of Trini Lopez. On one of the tracks, recorded live, Trini shouts to the crowd, “I love you!” The crowd cheers. Then, again he says, with even more gusto, “I love you!” and the crowd lets loose a huge response with thunderous cheers and applause. The album also features songs by Rogers & Hart, Bobby Troup, Irving Berlin and Leon Russell. It was very important to Trini that I not leave without getting a copy of the CD. With the legendary Mr. Lopez surrounded by friends and fans, I turned to the one person who I believed had all the answers to the questions about the artist, Oralee Walker. I followed her to the room with the “secret stash” of CDs. I took the private moment to thank her. I shared my earlier trepidation when I first arrived and how meaningful it was to me that she had reached out to me. She graciously took my hand and said, “I represent Trini. I am an extension of him. That’s how he is and so that’s what I do.” As I listened, I knew I wasn’t merely looking into the eyes of a gracious personal assistant. I was looking into the eyes of a best friend, a deeply trusted soul kindred to Trini’s own who perhaps is a very large part of the reason Trini Lopez has kept so well preserved, his youthful joy and charm. * Credits for the production of “Fly Like an Eagle” by Trini Lopez: Director/Producer/Writer, Chip Miller Desert C.A.M. from Minneapolis, following the break-up of their band, Lifter Puller. Craig Finn spent his formative years in Minneapolis, worshipping the Twin Cities Holy Trinity of Rock, Replacements, Husker Du and Soul Asylum. Lifter Puller aspired to that same style of shambolic genius. In Brooklyn, Finn and Kubler hooked up with bassist, Galen Polivka and drummer Bobby Drake. A few months after they formed, The Hold Steady recorded their debut, Almost Killed Me. Multi-instrumentalist, (keyboards, accordion, harmonica) Franz Nicolai made a guest appearance on the album and was invited to join the band. By 2005, The Hold Steady released their sophomore effort, Separation Sunday. It was a loose concept album following the exploits of Charlemagne, Holly (…her parents named her Hallelujah, the kids all called her Holly”), and Gideon. A pimp, a drug addict/prostitute/ born again Christian and a skinhead, roam from town to town, party to party, searching for their next high. Arriving in 2006, boys and girls in America was a stunning tour de force. Finn’s lyrics were dense and literate, referencing Jack Kerouac, (“there are nights when I think Sal Paradise was right, boys and girls in America have such a sad time together”). Despite the bummer sentiment, the melodies were sparkling and buoyant. The instrumentation was sprinkled with glockenspiel and piano flourishes, along with soaring classic rock riffage. Craig Finn’s commanding song-speak took center stage. Whether he’s checking in on a chagrinned Holly, Gideon and Charlemagne, chronicling a post-o.d. make out session at a concert, or narrating a drug-fueled trip to the race track. The album received rapt critical attention and commercial success. The band quickly followed with Stay Positive in 2008. Of course it was a let-down after the casual brilliance of boys and girls… It was much more polished, but the finished product felt weirdly overwrought and undernourished.

Franz Nicolay departed the band, but they soldiered on, releasing Heaven Is Whenever in 2010. Without Nicolay’s shimmery touches, the album returned them to their bar-band roots. The Hold Steady took a much needed break and Craig Finn released a solo album. Recorded in Austin Texas, Clear Heart Full Eyes was released in 2012 and exhibited a lean, Alt-Country vibe that belied his cityslicker angst. Now after four years, The Hold Steady returns with their new album, Teeth Dreams. It’s off to a great start with “I Hope This Whole Thing Didn’t Frighten You.” The track careens out of the speakers like a long lost Replacements song you kinda-sorta know. Over a slingshot rhythm and growling guitars, Finn’s squirrely narration is already in progress: Reassuring a companion that his ex-running buddies, the Cityscape Skins, seem menacing, but are no longer threat. He doesn’t condone their racist beliefs, “For me it was mostly the music.” His rationale feels forced. On “Spinners” and “Wait A While” Craig Finn drops his rebel pose and morphs into Dear Abby, offering advice to the lovelorn. The former opens with a fractious instrumental overture. The lyrics detail the mating rituals of the dance floor. A young girl in a big city is unlucky in love… (“heartache hurts but you can dance it off.”) She’s a coquette while the music plays, “she cuddles up and spins aside.” But she keeps her emotions in check. The action shudders to a halt Finn as equates the dance floor a metaphor for life...” Once you’re out there everything’s possible, there might be a fight there might be a miracle/Loosen your grip, it feels so incredible.” Twin guitars kick in unspooling a series of fiery fills. The melody of “Wait A While” shares musical DNA with Springsteen’s “Blinded By The Light.” Here Finn takes the opposite tack, instructing a heartbroken girl to take her time before plunging into another relationship… ”Once they hear you’ve got a broken heart,

they’re going to come around and make you smile/Little Girl you’re going to rush right in, why don’t you wait awhile.” The best songs here are “The Only Thing,” “On WithThe Business,” “Big Cig” and “Runner’s High.” On “The Only Thing” whipcrack riffs ride roughshod over a pounding beat. Finn spins an opaque yarn concerning a former flame fallen on hard times, “She’s sleeping at a storage space by the airport, the only thing she talks about is TV.” The lyrics for “On WithThe Business” are non-sequiter a go go! Powered by downstroke guitars that echo and sway, Finn apologizes for “ that prick in the parking lot” and rambles about “blood on the carpet and mud on the mattress,” basically litany of bad behavior. Even he admits its apocryphal… “I said a couple of things that probably weren’t technically true.” Sharp staccato guitar licks and menacing bass lines anchor “Big Cig.” Finn is besotted by an enigma in a tight cocktail dress…”It’s not love, it’s not even a crush, that’s fine/Mostly I dig her and her big cig.” The impossibly catchy melody is accented by hooks that recall Brownsville Station’s homage to the illicit inhale, “Smoking In The Boys Room.” Finally, “Runner’s High” tethers a friend’s dubious story of “guns, guts and glory” to a galloping gait. Finn’s skepticism is eclipsed by a pin-wheeling guitar solo. Ideally, the closing tracks of an album, serve as a summation, or a quiet and introspective denouement for the action that precedes it. The final tracks here are stripped- down and subdued. But the results are dullsville. “Amost Everything” is built around circuitous acoustic arpeggios but the song is all verse and no chorus. Worse than that, the melody bears an uncomfortable resemblance to Bon Jovi’s turgid cowboy ode, “Wanted Dead Or Alive.” (Insert puking sounds here). Clocking in at nearly eight minutes, “Oaks” is a minor key waltz with promise. Unfortunately the track becomes mired in Finn’s stream-of-conscious ramble, as well as an endless “Freebird-y” guitar solo. Sadly, Teeth Dreams is unsatisfactory on myriad levels. The most glaring mis-step is burying Craig Finn’s vocals deep in the mix. His wily adventures should be front and center. Hopefully The Hold Steady can rebound from these artistic stumbles. As long as they still aspire to greatness, it’s still within their grasp.

T

he word epiphany comes from the Greek, (of course!) Aside from the religious connotations, the word is defined as “an experience of sudden and strong realization.” Musical epiphanies are few and far between. Sometimes an artist or band has them at the beginning of their career, like Marshall Crenshaw, Tracy Chapman and Liz Phair. Their debuts were flawless. All three artists have amassed a strong catalog of work, but never repeated that feat. Sometimes it comes mid-career. Matthew Sweet had been kicking around the Athens, Georgia music scene for years before he produced his Power Pop masterpiece, Girlfriend. k.d. lang was four albums into her career before she released Ingenue. That record was a languid distillation of unrequited love, yearning and regret. The melodies and lang’s vocal style leaned closer to Julie London than lang’s original touchstone, Patsy Cline. With The Hold Steady, their musical lightning bolt arrived with their third record, “boys and girls in America.” The album was an inspired pastiche of early Bruce Springsteen, Husker Du and Thin Lizzy. An unlikely combination, but the band made it work. Somehow the lyrics subconsciously recalled the streetwise storytelling Springsteen perfected on “Born To Run,” (with hints of Tom Waits and Rickie Lee Jones thrown in). That blended with the Classic Rock synergy of Thin Lizzy and the sonic bursts of Husker-Du style Hardcore Punk. The Hold Steady formed in Brooklyn, New York in in 2004. A PAINTER WHO ALWAYS DELIGHTS

nake Jagger is a painter who truly loves capturing his subjects & putting a tongue-in-cheek twist on it! Whether Desert Landscapes, Catalina Island, or animal paintings, something is always aschew, but you have to look for it! Not only is his art delightful, but so is his outgoing personality! Snake is a legend in the Desert -- AND -- everyone Loves him! Snake refers to his artistic style as Whimsical Surrealism. He is an artist who, while dedicated to the subtle exposition of his personal philosophy, doesn›t take himself too seriously and is comfortable working with his tongue planted firmly in cheek. Jagger›s work is clearly surrealist in demeanor, but there is no hint of the Daliesque allegory here. Rather, Jagger›s work seems to draw a significant part of its compositional inspiration from Rene Magritte. Jagger, like Magritte, is able to juxtapose the most mundane of objects in a manner that convinces us to accept the entire image, regardless of its disparities, as a wholly realistic depiction. And so it is with Jagger›s work; once the mind›s eye has recorded the presence and positioning of these incongruous objects, it then becomes almost impossible to imagine the painting existing without them. Snake has been drawing and painting since he was six years of age. Without any formal training, he is the quintessential selftaught artist. Although he dabbled in art throughout during his early years. he did not get serious about it until he was about 25 yrs old. He has since developed his own unique style of portraying the desert landscape that he had come to love. His early influences include such masters as Leonardo Da Vinci, Thomas Hart Benton, and modern influences such as Peter Max, Noble Richardson, MC Echer, and his personal favorite, Rene Magritte. These days Snake spends a lot of time doing what he loves to do, creating manicured Landscapes, incorporating a touch of whimsy and surrealism. Along with the desert, he enjoys painting Space scapes and scenes with a Mediterranean flavor, like regions such as the Greek Islands or Vineyards of Tuscany -- & Catalina Islands! He also does pet portraits, murals, and commissioned pieces.

And true to his love of personas, Snake paints himself in his paintings - self-portraits, such as a Pirate! Snake Jagger›s work can be viewed at his website: www.snakejagger.com. PET PLACE

Traveling With Your Pup D

ogs love to travel! If you own a dog, chances are he races to go with you whenever you gather up your car keys. Dogs are natural nomads, traveling in packs in the wild. They are curious creatures who love seeing new places and meeting new friends. Traveling with pets has become easier with more hotels and restaurants with outdoor seating happily accommodating them. Coachella Valley residents are taking off for trips to cooler locations and their dogs often accompany them on day trips and longer vacations. Wise planning and safety precautions make the experience more enjoyable. In the past decade while the economy tanked, spending on pets increased 73%. Marketers realized that people who treat their pets like family are an attractive demographic with disposable income. It is good business to cater to pet owners. Some restaurants even have “doggie” menus with special cooked items for canines. Your well behaved leashed

dog is welcome at many retailers including Home Depot, Lowes, Apple, The Pottery Barn, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Many major hotel chains including Marriott’s Residence Inn, Motel 6 and Best Western allow pets. Campgrounds are full of family pets. Doggie day care programs and local pet sitters can provide coverage if you visit tourist sites where dogs are not allowed. Single gal Karen Goldberg took her 86 pound Golden Retriever, Riley, on vacation to a dog focused resort, Canine Camp Getaway in New York. Off the chart activities at the camp included scent-detection workshops for the dogs, decorating home-made dog biscuit classes for the humans, and sharing celebratory beverages at “Yappy Hour” for everyone. Backyard pools and hotel pools pose a possible risk to dogs. While many dogs swim and know how to get themselves out, other breeds with heavy coats are not able to sustain themselves in pool water. If you have an older

dog that sometimes gets disoriented, he should not be unsupervised near pools. Life preservers for dogs are an extra precaution. CAR TRAVEL A host of new products ensures the comfort and safety of your dog during car trips. Cool pads inside his carrier cool down the temperature during hot weather. Socks or little shoes can keep his feet from burning on the hot pavement. Tiny sunglasses with UV protection guard against sun damage to the eyes and block dust & debris. “Cool down” harness vests containing cooling crystals help on hot days. Car harnesses protect your dog if you have to stop suddenly. A sturdy dog crate is essential. Crates keep your dog secure in your car and are required for airline travel. A crate must be large enough for the dog to stand, turn around, and lie down. Be sure to take along his familiar food, treats, and extra water. Pack a recent photograph of your dog just in case he gets lost and you have to prove ownership. Pictured here is Lilly, an adorable rescue Bichon mix, who recently traveled by car from her home in Alameda, California, to a vacation home in La Quinta. Lilly enjoyed a lunch break at the Harris Ranch outdoor snack shop and a trip to Nordstrom, another dog friendly store. Of course, unlike this fun photograph, dogs should not be left alone in cars. NEVER LEAVE YOUR DOG IN A CLOSED VEHICLE ON A HOT DAY, even with the windows cracked. The temperature inside can soar in a matter of minutes. Unattended animals inside cars are also at risk of being stolen. It takes less than a minute for someone to break a window and steal your pet. If you are traveling alone with your dog and can’t find a responsible person to watch him, no one will object if you take a calm dog into a public restroom while keeping him on a leash. Drive through restaurants and a picnic under a tree may replace restaurant meal stops. AIRLINE TRAVEL Health certificates available from your veterinarian are required for all airline

travel. Bring copies of shot records including rabies. Check in advance with your airline as pet requirements can differ, starting with a check of their online pet policy. If you have a small dog under your airline’s weight limit, it is recommended you take them in a carrier in the passenger cabin where they travel under your seat. Some groups advise against shipping your pet in the cargo area due to instances of loss, injury and even death. Ask the airline if their below cabin pet area is climate controlled and pressurized. If you must ship an animal below cabin, book a direct flight. Pets’ airline reservations must be made in advance. Your trusted veterinarian can decide if sedation will make the flight easier for your animal. However, check first as some airlines will not accept sedated pets because sedation may impact their respiratory function while below cabin. TRAIN TRAVEL Amtrak does not allow pets, other than service animals. Smaller regional rail companies are more hospitable, but call first to find out about crating and other restrictions. Some transit companies don’t allow animals during crowded rush hours. Short leashes are recommended. Whether you are on the road or at home, the upcoming July 4th holiday is the worst day for dogs when terrified animals left outside jump fences and go on the run. July 5 is the busiest day for animal control and the shelters are overloaded with strays. Dead and injured animals scatter our streets and freeways. Owners should walk their dogs before the fireworks start, and keep them securely INSIDE the house or hotel until the night and fireworks are completely over. Playing soft music can sooth them from the extreme sound. A wonderful resource, U.S and Canada Dog Travel Guide, can be obtained by going online to www.dogfriendly.com. Grab the car keys, load up Fido, and hit the road for a new destination. Turn on the stereo and listen to the awesome oldie by Lobo, “Me and You and a dog named Boo, Travelin’ and livin’ off the land. Me and you and a dog named Boo, how I love being a free man”.

Go Deli! Go Wine, Craft Beer & Spirits!

F

or the Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and Rancho Mirage crowd, there’s no better place to grab a nice bottle of wine than over at Desert Wine and Spirits. Costa and Zola Nichols have consistently provided our thirsty desert with beverages and libations for many years—along with their very friendly demeanor. And the news about this place has just gotten better. THEY’VE RE-LOCATED to a much bigger place and fortunately for us, it’s still in the same Sun Center Mall in Palm Springs. And just as good as their selection of wine, beer, and spirits has been: Add now the GO DELI MARKET where the same excellence is playing out in their deli section. In the accompanying photo of Go Deli’s opening, we see Costa on the right, Palm Spring Mayor Steve Pougnet, and Zola in the middle. As you notice, it was a Palm Springs Chamber event…and it was a party! Even better—it was a wine party! Indeed, in the top left, you can just catch wine wise guy Paolo Wakham, of Regal Wine Co., who was on hand to pour from his extensive portfolio of wonderful Italian and California wine. “Opening up the deli was a must for us, Costa insists. “It completes our Zen balance by providing great deli food and drink.” Hmmm…I’m not sure he used the word “Zen” but that was the drift I got when we spoke. Right now, Go Deli is carrying Boar’s Head Brand premium products. It’s a great line up of meats and cheeses. And Costa is looking to expand the deli to include more exotic European fare—including caviar, in the fall when things start rolling into the tourist season. Many of us wine enthusiasts who have enjoyed Costa’s Saturday Wine Tastings are thrilled to have the much larger “Wine Lounge” area to be hanging out at. Further, Costa has installed the high-tech wine dispenser, the WineStation—made by Napa Technology, so every day we can enjoy a fun selection of a dozen or so whites, sparklers, rosés and reds by the tasting glass. Right now, let’s go into the Lounge and grab a taste of a 2001 Heitz Martha’s Vineyard, or, a nice glass of a Napa 2009 Ghost Block Cabernet Sauvignon. Cool stuff!

Just to get the names straight, Desert Wine & Spirits continues to be the liquor store name doing business inside of Go Deli Market. And now, throw “Craft Beer” in the mix because Costa is now carrying one of the largest selection of chilled craft brew in all of Palm Springs. Not only have Costa and Zola jumped on the craft beer craze, they are at the forefront in providing a special section & selection of organic wine. O.K.—all right, I know technically there’s no such animal, but there are organically grown grapes that distinguish the wine from other trendy terms of farming. Wine Enthusiasts—All Aboard!! Organic is the new wine wave on the horizon. Annie Arnold is the owner of the Organic Wine Exchange with a wonderful portfolio and selection of wine—some of which is now in Costa’s organic wine section. Fortunately, Annie has agreed to a fun interview for an up-coming piece, so we’ll get the skinny on all we need to know and love about organic grapes. For our article here, I asked Costa to highlight or recommend a few bottles. Among the myriad of wine Costa has available, he’s currently hot on Bokisch Wines and he’d like to see his customers knowing more about them. I just wrote a bit on Bokisch when discussing famed Iron Chef, Jose Garces’ appearance at his Garces Group Restaurant Tinto here in Palm Springs, where he and Executive Chef John Tice put together a fabulous five course Spanish wine dinner that featured the Bokisch Spanish varietals grown here in California. Costa and Zola carry Bokisch wines and embrace the surrounding love story: Markus Bokisch has a devotion for Spanish wines because of his family heritage. His mother is Spanish and his father German, but they met in Paris and fell in love. Little Markus was raised in California, but he and his brother spent every childhood summer in Spain with their relatives. Markus then pursued a degree in viticulture and after spending several years at Joseph Phelps Vineyards specializing in Rhone Varieties, he and his wife, Liz, moved to Spain. Upon their return, they purchased their property in the Lodi area. Why Lodi of all places? The region

reminded Marcus of the Delta del Ebro in Spain where his family lives. He found the property in the Clements Hills east of Lodi to be an excellent climate for grape growing due to the cooling delta breezes in the summer afternoons. Wine writer and critic Robert Parker says, “The number of California wineries working with Spanish varietals is small, but if this impressive trio (Bokisch Albarino, Graciano & Tempranillo—which sell for less than $20) is an example of what’s possible, I think we’ll see an explosion of Spanish varietals.” Costa & Zola and the staff welcome you with, “Don’t stop, but Go Deli!”

Who and What is Rockin Johnny Rockets?

T

here’s a new venue for live music in town and it has everything you and your family, even your four legged members, could want for an afternoon or evening of fun, food and fantastic classic rock. It continues to surprise me that even with a highly visible location, on Highway 111 across from The River in Rancho Mirage, many people could not tell you where Johnny Rocket’s is if you ask them. I suppose because the building has been there under different ownership and title and perhaps because as we drive by our attention is either drawn straight ahead or in the opposite direction toward the beautiful open air shopping mall. I would like to offer you my personal

20

invitation to visit an establishment that has quickly become one of my favorite places to eat for several reasons: ICE CREAM, SHAKES, MALTS, FLOATS & DESSERT PASTRIES: Johnny Rocket’s serves some of the best ice cream shakes and malts in town. They start with the highest quality vanilla ice cream and end with REAL WHIP CREAM putting amazing combinations of flavor in between the two. Total satisfaction is served up in frosty, vintage mugs. I suggest that when you walk into Johnny Rockets, you don’t make eye contact with the dessert display to the right of the entry. You may be tempted to skip dinner altogether, and go straight for dessert! It is dangerously

scrumptious in there. THE BURGERS: Their burgers truly are some of the best I’ve ever tasted, especially the Smokehouse, with crispy onion rings and barbecue sauce, cheese and SMOKED BACON. It makes you think, “So this is what Carl’s Jr. was trying to get at...not even close!” All Johnny Rocket’s burgers are made from fresh, never frozen, 100% beef. You truly can taste the wonderful difference. SALADS: Their salads rival any of the neighboring gourmet restaurants. My favorite is the incredibly fresh spinach salad served with their creamy raspberry vinaigrette. VARIETY: The rest of their menu offers something for everyone! They have wonderful lean chicken breast sandwiches in many combinations, hot dogs and chicken tenders, not to mention their “Rocket Melts”. The quality of the food is absolutely above par. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Good Old Fashioned Customer Service is a rare treat. I’m not talking about “kind service”, “efficient service” or “at least my food wasn’t cold” service. When I recently went to Johnny Rockets, I sat down with a friend and did not let anyone know I was with the paper. Brian (a natural born people person) greeted us warmly, took our drink orders and returned with a little sampler of hot french fries and served them with a side of smile! That’s right! He had a small bowl in which he made a happy face with the ketchup. I know it may sound silly, but it felt kind of special. You couldn’t help but appreciate the extra effort in presentation. It seems that Johnny Rocket’s has made a point to hire staff members who genuinely like people. I know! It’s a fantastic concept, and it really works for me. DISCOUNT MOVIE TICKETS: With the purchase of a meal and beverage at Johnny Rockets, you can purchase discounted tickets to see a movie of your choice across the street at the Century at the River movie theater. $7.50 for any movie is a fantastic deal anywhere!

THE PATIO: With high-functioning misters on the shady side of the covered patio, you can enjoy temperate conditions while you dine in the fresh air. The patio is also pet friendly as it has its own entrance. Live music will also be available on the patio (weather permitting) every Thursday and Sunday evening from 6 pm-9 pm. It truly feels like you’re on vacation as you listen to classic and soft rock songs that we all know and love. BEER & WINE & SPORTS & PIN BALL: That’s right! Johnny Rockets has 20 Premium Beers on tap and selections of red and white wine for the adult diner. They also have 60” plasma televisions so you can catch your favorite sporting events. Meanwhile, the kids can challenge themselves to a classic game of pinball. $2 BEER: With purchase of a meal, you can enjoy $2 draft beer any time. (Not valid with any other promotions) $5 OFF any purchase of $25 or more. For a limited time, with the coupon located in CV Weekly, you can get $5 taken off the bill with any food and beverage purchase. (Not to be combined with $2 beer promotion) ENTERTAINMENT: For the month of May, two of the Coachella Valley’s favorite classic rock bands will be playing your favorites on the misted patio every Thursday and Sunday night, from 6 pm- 9 pm. You’ll enjoy the talented musicians as much for the great music they provide, as you will the friendly atmosphere they bring with them. Thursday Nights: O.G.R. Band is your entertainment host (that stands for Old Guys Rock). It’s true! They are not afraid to be called “Old Guys” because these Old Guys really do ROCK. With classic favorites from REO Speedwagon, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Seger and the like, who better than to honor these oldies but forever goodies than the ones inspired to become musicians by the very music they play. Sunday Nights: MELTDOWN is known for their stellar vocal harmonies, and seasoned musicianship. They bring you the best of the 60’s and 70’s, including songs from Crosby Stills and Nash, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, The Byrds, America, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and more. Larry and Cat Pedersen, along with brother Mike Pedersen will sooth your heart and mind with heartfelt renditions of songs that were written to awaken the soul and heal the world. If they can’t lift your spirits on a Sunday night, try adding a milk shake. We all hope to see you and yours at Johnny Rocket’s, the truly family friendly restaurant (even for your four legged members). Come Enjoy the food, the friendship and music. Johnny Rockets is located at 71855 HWY 111, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270, across from The River. Call them at (760) 674-3120 or check them out online at www.johnnyrockets.com.

Movie Reviews with Robin E. Simmons

COMING SOON!

fter informally surveying, or possibly annoying, dozens of strangers in Westfield’s food court, more than 80% of the people I spoke to said they were planning to see a movie in a theater this summer. Only 80%! Sometimes I assume that everyone is a movie buff, but I know that’s not so. Kind of sad, isn’t it? We movie lovers are ever hopeful that some of the most anticipated -- and hyped -- films may actually deliver the premise of the poster and promise of the trailer! It’s a rare event, but sometimes it happens. There’s nothing like the surprise of a great film that never breaks that strange hypnotic spell from fade-in to final credits. That’s a high we cinema addicts crave. Here are some of the most mentioned of this summer’s titles based on my unscientific poll. GODZILLA

for this film and wide praise for its director Gareth Edwards, who has only directed one previous film, the micro budgeted ($12,500), but great looking MONSTERS. Bryan Cranston is featured in the trailer and already people are asking, “Can Godzilla survive Heisenberg?” Opens May 16. DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

The last reboot of the great Ape saga was well-written and tightly directed. It had emotional power and a great look, to say nothing of the remarkable physical acting of Andy Serkis in a motion capture performance that left no doubt about Caesar’s intelligence and anger. Now, the human survivors of a devastating plague threaten the league of evolved apes. With Gary Oldman and Keri Russell. Directed by Matt Reeves. The word on the street is “intense and nightmarish.” Opens July 11. SEX TAPE

The rubber suited Godzilla first stomped the Tokyo in 1954. His rampage has been understood as a pop culture response to the atomic and hydrogen bombs dropped on Japan. Now, sixty years later, a bigger and much badder Godzilla rises from the depths of the abyss and threatens mankind for what we have wrought. There’s huge buzz

What an inspired premise: A couple married for a decade decides to spice up their love life by video recording a marathon sex session. Only problem is, when they

wake up the next morning, they realize it has been inadvertently sent to friends and family. If the couple is to maintain a shred of dignity in their world, they must somehow undo the potential damage immediately and, to our delight, they make an increasingly desperate effort do to so. Director Jake Kasdan’s spicy, cringeworthy comedy stars ace comic performers Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel who have great on screen chemistry. Opens July 25. GET ON UP

Chadwick Boseman ignites the screen as James Brown, the Godfather of Soul. Early talk of a Best Actor award is already attached to this biography that tracks Brown’s life from his dirt-poor childhood to his stardom. It’s big, mostly true melodrama with a brilliant, soul-throbbing score. From producers Brian Grazer and Mick Jagger. Opens August 1. A MOST WANTED MAN

Philip Seymour Hoffman’s final screen performance is in an adaptation of a tense novel from spymaster author John Le Carre. Set in present day Hamburg, Hoffman is a mysterious, tortured, near dead ChechenRussian searching for his Russian father’s stolen fortune in an Islamic community. Major international intrigue unfolds as catalytic forces and disparate desires converge while the clock ticks. Rachel McAdams and Willem Dafoe co star in this promising thriller adapted by Andrew Bovell and directed by Anton Corbijn. Opens July 25. MALIFICENT Who better to play the wicked witch behind “Sleeping Beauty’s” curse than Angelina Jolie? Beyond inspired casting, there’s said to be a darker than expected interpretation from Jolie in the retelling of this classic fairy tale about a betrayal and

its consequences on truth, goodness and beauty. In IMAX 3D and no, it’s not from Disney. Opens May 30. LUCY

Scarlet Johansson has established herself as an actress and a star. The aboutto-be mom hotness remains combustible on screen -- even if only for her singularly seductive voice. In Luc Besson’s sci-fi thriller set in a futuristic Taipei, Johansson is a drug mule who accidentally ingests a drug she was carrying in her stomach that gives her incredible abilities including great physical strength and massive intelligence that’s beyond any other human! High hopes for this film that promises to be a roller coaster thrill ride that tickles the mind and dazzles the senses. Keep you fingers crossed. Opens August 8. Strangely, no one, not even male teens, brought up anticipation for the gargantuan budgeted TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION that’s about an amateur

inventor (Mark Wahlberg) who comes up with something that reopens the robot war. The fourth version of this movie that reinforces the notion that Hollywood is bereft of originality is again directed by Michael Bay and will be shown worldwide in 3D. Opens May 30. robinesimmons@aol.com

A Quest For Freedom

We live in a world where there is an ongoing history of shameful human behavior. Recent headlines continue to inform us that people can act in despicable ways. What lessons have we learned? In Sue Monk Kidd’s new novel, The Invention of Wings (Viking, 373 pages), she constructs a first person narrative about American slavery based on the real lives of the Grimké sisters who took a stand as abolitionists and feminists. The story begins in 1803, Charleston, North Carolina, when 11-year-old Sarah Grimké is given, as a birthday gift, ownership of a ten year-old slave girl named Hetty, also known as Handful. As a small child, Sarah witnessed the beating of her mother’s personal slave, at her mother’s request. Sarah was traumatized at the first blow. Little Sarah develops a stutter and terrible distaste for people owning people. In addition to the family home, they have a large plantation with more slaves. A precocious child, Sarah is more interested in her father’s work -- a judge -- than woman’s work -- needlepoint and home details. She longs to be a lawyer, desiring a life with purpose.

The Invention of wings By sue monk kidd fiction

At an early age, Sarah’s learns Latin and she reads in her father’s extensive library. She is her father’s favorite daughter until she uses legal means by way of a “certificate of manumission” to free Handful. The document is torn up and she is punished. When another Grimké is born, Sarah asks to be baby Angelina’s godmother. Sixteen years older, Sarah shapes her little sister with her anti-slavery views. Handful’s mother Charlotte, is a troublemaker and rebel, but is tolerated because she is an expert seamstress. She sews a quilt with the story of her life starting with her grandmother leaving Africa. She tells Handful that those that came before had wings and could fly away from harm or bad spirits. Charlotte informs Handful

that her skinny shoulder blades used to be wings. She says no matter what, mother and daughter could never be separated. One day they will be free. Sarah is Handful’s first indoor assignment. She is confused by Sarah’s strange nature. Sarah just wants to be friends. Handful develops a rebellious side like her mother that makes her difficult. Seeing that Sarah is different from the others, Charlotte makes Sarah promise she will free Handful some day and Sarah agrees. As time goes by, she realizes how difficult it will be to keep her promise. As a woman she has little say about anything. Soon Sarah comes to realize teaching Handful to read is one way to free her. Handful becomes a good reader and learns to write. When it is found out, Handful is whipped and Sarah is banned from the library and forbidden all books. As the women age, conditions do not improve. Sarah refuses to become a “society” woman while the horrible treatment of slaves exists in her community– including in her own home. Her father is ridiculed for his softness on slavery laws, partly brought about by Sarah’s outspoken nature. When Judge Grimké becomes ill, Sarah must take her father north to Philadelphia for medical treatment. There she discovers a new world where both white and black people live freely together. After her father’s death, Sarah decides to stay and is befriended by Quakers. Drawn to their liberal ways -- anti-slavery and clergywomen -- she finds her purpose and decides to become a Quaker minister. Eventually, Sarah and Angelina move north – the only place they can openly express themselves. With the help of northern Abolitionists, they each write a pamphlet that circulates across the country causing an up-roar. Even Handful finds a partly burned document blowing on the ground in Charleston. The sisters are banned from Charleston with orders to be arrested on sight for sedition. With the sisters gone and the death of Charlotte, Handful can no longer bear to live as a slave under Mrs. Grimké and plots her escape. She writes Sarah and says she will

be free or die. At risk to her own freedom, Sarah returns home to help free Handful as promised. This fictional account about slavery and freedom is told by Sarah and Handful as a first person narrative. Kidd has successfully taken real lives and events and formed them into a story that gives the reader a personal look at the tremendous struggle, shameful horror and terrible cruelty that is slavery. The real Grimké sisters not only worked hard to tell people the truth of what life was like for slaves, but insisted slaves be freed and made equal citizens. They thought the best way to bring about change was to appeal to women – both in the north and the south. Even with the Quakers, the sisters became aware of their limitations due to their gender. They realized their fight for the freedom of slaves was also a fight for the freedom of women! The Quakers asked them to not pursue the feminist issue, afraid it would divide the abolitionists – which it did. The sisters were excommunicated from the Quaker community. My favorite sentence in the book comes when Angelina and Sarah are asked to abandon their feminist stance. Sarah says to the Quaker leadership, “All I ask of our brethren is that they will take their feet from off our neck.” The line was actually spoken by Sarah Grimké. This is skilled story telling, merging facts with fiction. It is a testament to Kidd’s thorough research and ability to create a powerful narrative around truths that are relevant and meaningful. The Invention of Wings is a captivating story about women desperate to take flight but are held down by the “man.” Makes one wonder if people will ever get it right.

Real Estate

April

A

pril is a great month to be here in the Coachella Valley. It seems to be the month to “party” here in the east end of the valley with two weekends of “Coachella” and one weekend of “Stagecoach”. We usually get a little spring cleaning done at our home thanks to the pounding bass drums from the nearby concerts that knock the dust off those hard to reach ceiling fans. April is also typically one of our best months for real estate sales and closings, but not this year. It drives me crazy to read and hear that the real estate market is in full recovery and continuing to improve nationally and in the state of California. While this may be true by averaging real estate market statistics or even by selectively picking certain markets across the country or state, it is misleading to believe that ALL real estate markets are doing as well. For those of you who have not been following this column, this year I have been closely watching the inventory of single family homes and condos (residential properties) in the Coachella Valley through our local Multiple Listing Service (MLS). Each month I have compared the market activity of listings that have opened escrow but not yet closed (pendings) and the listings that have sold (solds) to the previous month and to the same month from 2013. This is the fourth month of tracking this information and an interesting trend is developing for real estate in the

By Bruce cathcart Coachella Valley for 2014. Last month (March) according to the Desert Area MLS there were 1,070 pendings of residential properties in the Coachella Valley. There were only 879 pendings in April representing a month over month drop in sales activity of approximately 18%. Last year in the month of April there were 1,049 residential solds in the Coachella Valley. There were only 870 solds in April 2014 representing a year over year drop in closed sales of approximately 18%. Overall inventory available to buyers this month was down again only slightly (2%) from approximately 4,220 properties available for sale at the beginning of April to 4,144 properties available for sale at the end of April. This means that the number of new listings that came on the market in April came close to, but did not keep up with the number of sales. So what does this all mean? We all know that sales for residential properties in the Coachella Valley are “seasonal” with the best time to sell properties starting in mid-January and ending in mid-May. So far sales activity (both the number of pendings and solds) for the first three months of 2014 has followed the seasonal pattern of increasing each month while the inventory has remained stable. April comes along and disrupts the pattern with a drop in sales activity signaling an early end to our seasonal sales this year even though inventory continues to remain stable. While sale prices are still up considerably over the same time last year, of great concern is that

the number of solds for the first four months of 2014 is down by an average of 19.5%. Since our overall inventory has remained relatively stable for the last 4 months, it can be argued that fewer sales at higher prices is the new “norm” for the Coachella Valley real estate market. But just between me and you, the hair is up on the back of my neck telling me to keep a close eye on the overall inventory numbers. If inventory increases dramatically over the next few months we can expect some serious price reductions in the near future. If the inventory remains stable then we will just have to get used to slightly higher prices and fewer sales. Congratulations to my very good friend Sharon Stein who was the selling broker on this month’s top sale of a beautiful home in the Vintage Country Club that included 4 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms totaling 8,153 square feet on a 30,000 square foot golf course lot for $7,700.000.00. 64 homes sold in April for over $1 million dollars and of those 21 sold for over $2 million dollars (almost twice

as many as last month!). Just across the tracks our lowest priced home this month was a fixerupper in the Dream Homes neighborhood in Cathedral City proving once again that here in the Coachella Valley we have something to fit everyone’s budget! Real Estate Tip of the week: This year don’t blow your income tax return on new hats! FHA financing requires only 3.5% of the sales price as a down payment. Invest that tax return in your future and buy a home! See your trusted real estate agent and let them guide you through the process. A STERLING SOCIETY W hile most people are focused on the racist views and plantation mentality of Los Angeles Clippers owner, Donald Sterling, there are other disturbing societal statements embedded within the story. For Sterling, he has lived in a segregated society for much of his life. When looking at country clubs where the affluent play golf and socialize, people who are Jewish were not welcomed at some clubs that were frequented by other non-Jewish caucasians. We can look around our desert and see the remnants of this at numerous country clubs. While this segregation may no longer be actively in effect, older members are quite familiar with the exclusivity of their clubs and the unwritten exclusion of people who are not like them. Sterling’s relationship with V. Stiviano aka Vanessa Perez born Maria Perez shows another side of the affluent that few talk about. Quite often successful men have women like Stiviano in their life. Given high profiles and a need for discretion, these men often buy or rent expensive condos so that they can have alone time with their confidantes. Sometimes these arrangements include sex while other times

they do not. The overriding objective of many of these affluent men is to have a safe place where they can escape daily demands and relax on their terms. I was once told by a prominent philanthropist who often engaged in questionable business dealings that philanthropy “buys you the element of doubt.” While it should not be a surprise, philanthropy is not always done for altruistic reasons. The second humanitarian award that the NAACP was going to bestow on Donald Sterling this month is a classic example of this and another seedy part of society. When Sterling was in trouble for treating African, Latin and Korean Americans unfairly in the renting of his apartments, Leon Jenkins, the

Los Angeles Chapter Leader of the NAACP was more than comfortable helping Sterling to buy plausible deniability on the charges brought up by the US Justice Department as well as his long-time employee, Elgin Baylor. Looking at Leon Jenkins, he was a judge in Detroit who in 1988 was indicted on bribery, conspiracy, mail fraud and racketeering charges. Disbarred in Michigan and California, Jenkins has repeatedly sought reinstatement to practice law. Upon his denied reinstatement request last month, the bar questioned if he has the “moral fitness to resume the practice of law.” Leon Jenkins is not unique. There are many people running non-profit organizations with questionable or seedy pasts. Like the rest of the country, we have our own examples of this in the Coachella

May 8 to May 14, 2014

Valley. Others who are to be honored at that May 15th NAACP dinner include “civil rights giant” Wal-Mart and the “Reverend” Al Sharpton, a preacher who has never actually run a church. Sharpton also has a long questionable history including associations with Mafia leaders, massive voter fraud and other corrupt and morally questionable activities. Donald Sterling was an attorney by training. He used this training to wear out those who sued him. This points out another not too secret fact about the United States in 2014 - money buys you the ability to outlast others in lawsuits. The average person does not have the financial resources or time needed to fight the affluent. While Donald Sterling may have been found “not guilty” in a court of law, we all now know that he is anything but innocent. The moral of the Donald Sterling story is no surprise. Many leaders in business, politics and philanthropy are not who you think they are. If we see this on a national or regional level, you can be sure that it is happening right here in our own backyard.

ou do not need a lawyer to prepare a Will. You can prepare an entirely handwritten Holographic Will .A business letterhead, hotel stationary or date stamp would invalidate the Will. It must be dated, signed and show a TESTAMENTARY INTENT by stating “This is My Last Will and Testament, dated May 7, 2014 in Palm Desert California.” You should hire a lawyer to prepare a Will as it is not expensive and the consequences of failing to prepare it correctly are very serious. If you wanted to leave a $1,000,000 bequest to your son and a Million dollar diamond or home to your daughter, then what happens if they are sold before you die? Unfortunately the daughter gets nothing because it is no longer in existence… it was a specific bequest. The son however still gets his $1,000,000 because it was a general bequest. You may need estate planning that goes beyond a will. This could involve placing a home in a trust or buying life insurance to pay the estate taxes. When I had my legal radio show I opened each show saying “People Don’t Plan to Fail, They Fail to Plan”. Many famous people did not plan ahead. U.S. Senator Robert Kerr (on the US Senate Finance Committee) left an estate

valued at $20,000,000. The IRS immediately demanded $9,000,000 from his astonished heirs. At the time that meant the family would have to sell stocks and real estate at a substantial loss…just to pay the sudden taxes. After liquidation they could but could only raise $3,000,000 and had to borrow the other $6,000,000. Thus most of the estate went to interest payments and the IRS and not to the beloved family and very frustrated heirs. They went into debt. Many famous people died without Estate Planning and their estates were all a mess. Seymour Hoffman, Heath Ledger, Sonny Bono, Flo Jo, Walt Disney, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, J.P. Morgan and John D. Rockefeller are a few who did not plan ahead.

When I lecture I ask “Have you completed an estate plan?” I get answers as follows: Widow: “I don’t really have an estate; I only have money in a checking account, some personal jewelry and my dog Bella.” Domestic Partner: “I don’t really have an estate. Kevin and I have a house in joint tenancy so, when I die, it will bypass Probate and pass directly to Bill... isn’t that right?.” Grandparent: “I made a Will about 10 years ago before having grandkids. I’m sure it still covers everything.” The good news is everyone has an ESTATE!!! The bad news is, UNLESS YOU TAKE THE TIME to ensure that both you and what you have is safely monitored; your community estate could be a mess. What if you should become INCAPACITATED? Do you have an Advanced Health Care Directive? Is it on file at your hospital? Last year I took my mother in law to Eisenhower and was surprised when they asked her if she had her Health Care Directive on File with the hospital and not just in my office. Eisenhower now has a health care directive on file for our entire family….even our 28 year old daughter. Every reader should put this Coachella Valley Weekly down and do the same…. today. A health care directive is VERY

INEXPENSIVE in our office because we do not want to see our neighbors in the CV get in trouble because they have not have planned ahead and then become terminally ill….SO CALL TODAY at 760 837 7500 or email me at dale@dalegribowlaw.com. Plan ahead and remember, When you drink don’t get behind the wheel and have an accident (whether it is your fault or not) or get arrested for a DUI: DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE, CALL A TAXI… IT IS A LOT CHEAPER THAN HIRING ME! Looking for a Safe Date? Graduate with Honor!

P

rom and graduation season is here again - this is a time for celebration,” says Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. “Unfortunately, these happy occasions sometimes involve underage drinking which can result in tragedy. It is therefore critical that parents keep the lines of communication open when it comes to talking to their kids about the dangers of underage drinking and drunk driving.” Know who’s driving all evening: Are your kids or a friend driving, is there a designated driver, or will they be renting a limo? Make sure your teen has a way of contacting you and you can contact your teen; warn them of the dangers of talking or texting while driving. Get the evening’s

itinerary as well as a list of names and phone numbers of each person with your teen. Make sure your teen knows how to handle difficult situations; avoiding accepting a ride from a drunk driver, rejecting offers of alcohol or legal & illegal drugs, or not succumbing to pressure to engage in sexual activity. Insist that no changes be made to the evening itinerary unless you grant permission. Know who is supervising all events in which your teen is participating. Make sure your teen has money to cover alternative transportation costs (cab?), if necessary. We all want clean fruits and vegetables

T

he Environmental Working Group (EWG) recently completed their 2014 listing of the safest and dirtiest fruits and vegetables to eat. Their annual study is based on FDA and USDA tests of pesticide residues on produce when it reaches the consumer. EWG’s biggest concern at present is that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is not complying with a Congressional mandate to publish an annual guide that helps people identify and avoid the foods with the highest pesticide residues that have the greatest potential to impact human health. This failure to inform the public is of greatest concern when it comes to protecting the health of children. EWG cites a 2012 report by the Academy of Pediatrics that points out that children are uniquely susceptible to harmful health impacts from these pesticide residues. So what are the cleanest fruits and vegetables to eat? Avocados, sweet corn, pineapples, cabbage, frozen peas, onions, asparagus, mangoes, papayas, kiwis, eggplant, grapefruit, cantaloupe, cauliflower and sweet potatoes. Which fruits and vegetables are the dirtiest? Apples, leafy vegetables like kale, collard greens and spinach, imported

28

nectarines, potatoes, grapes, celery, cherry tomatoes, imported snap peas, strawberries, peaches, bell peppers and cucumbers. Ideally, you want to buy organic produce as it does not have the harmful pesticides. The challenge with many of the pesticides is that they do not wash off with water. To clean your non-organic produce, there are three recommended approaches. The simplest solution is a store bought produce spray. You can also use a mix that is 1 part vinegar and 4 parts water and soak your produce for a hour. Additionally, you may also dissolve 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and 2 tablespoons of banking soda with a cup of water and spray this mixture on your produce while being sure to leave the mixture on your produce for ten minutes.

L

ast week SledgeHammer Games gave us the first sneak peek into the next Call of Duty installment. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will be the first next-gen powered title in its franchise’s history. Their captivating and intriguing trailer stars Kevin Spacey as Jonathan Irons – One of the most powerful men in the world and most likely the catalyst to the violence about to ensue. He alone, will pull thousands of Battlefield fans to the franchise. CoD: Advanced Warfare takes place in a plausible future in which technological progress has been merged with today’s military practices. Private military corporations have become the dominant armed forces for a majority of nations. Jonathan Irons (Kevin Spacey), the founder and president of the world’s largest PMC – Atlas Corp, is in the center of it all. In this newly developed strategy of warfare, soldiers are fitted with mechstyle exoskeletons, eliminating the need for specialization on the combat field. Players will feel the power of enhanced player movements, including boost jumps and grappling, covert cloaking abilities, and unmatched speed, stamina, strength, and environmental awareness. Of course, SH Games would never take on this powerful and honorable opportunity without fully harnessing the POWER of next-gen capabilities. Players are armed with all new perks, weapons, highly specialized drones, and new vehicles such as the hover bike. Ammo has also been split between two classes in which players can choose standard, or direct-energy based ammo unlocking an entirely new gameplay experience.

In reality, while this all sounds amazing, a majority of gamers already own this technology. It’s called TitanFall. The true test will fall in controller and voice command integration, on both PS4 and Xbone, map development, and multiplayer patches. In an ideal world, I would say patchLESS, but we are gamers. We are bored, stubborn, creative and observant. If there is so much as a rip in texture layering, we will find it, exploit it, and cause misery. November 4, 2014 is the official release date for the game, with no mention on what editions come with what. I recommend GameStop to pre-order always, just based on the amount of promotions they do to make it easier to get your copy, and the exclusives, both physical and in-game.

Walking Tours Successful for Palm Springs Historical Society

E

ver since Palm Springs was discovered in the 1853, it has been a source of fascination for both visitors and residents alike. The history of this desert oasis has the makings of a sizzling novel or block buster movie ten times over, and the best part of it is, is that the stories that line Palm Springs past are true. One of the best ways to step back in time is with the many Walking Tours offered by the Palm Springs Historical Society, which have gained phenomenal success since its inception making it a top Palm Springs attraction. The Palm Springs Historical Society Walking Tours began 4 years ago and was the brain child of long time Palm Springs resident and one their volunteers and now board member Kathy Leonard. Leonard came up with the idea while on vacation in Mexico, visiting the lovely town of San Miguel de Allende. The town offered Walking Tours of their own and sparked an interest in Leonard for her to do the same in her own beautiful town of Palm Springs. When she returned home, she proposed the idea to the PSHS board and they gave her the green light to move forward with the Walking Tour. Leonard sprang into action and research, sifting through the history of Palm Springs creating a script to guide visitors through the past. Leonard was amazed at what her

research uncovered about her beloved PalmSprings, “I thought I knew a lot about it, when I actually knew nothing, it’s a learning experience every day,” said Leonard. The first tour was The Heart of the City tour, which incorporates the Village Green, and goes up to charming La Plaza and works its way up to the Welwood Murray Memorial Library and finishes up at the former spot of the Oasis Hotel. It is a well-rounded tour and gives a solid base of the history of Palm Springs. The tour became an instant success and gave inspiration to create more tours. The PSHS Walking Tours have grown since it’s humble beginnings 4 years ago and now has a rotation of 19 dedicated docents and offers 8 tours in total including, The Heart of the City, Golden Era of Hollywood Homes in Old Las Palmas, Inns, Architecture & Glamour, Architectural Icons of Fashion & Finance

for visitors and for the PSHS, “We’ve had so much positive feedback,” said Leonard. Although the Walking Tour season has come to end for the PSHS in May, they are excited and gearing up for their kick off in mid-October where they will be part of a Modernism Week –Weekend, before resuming their regular schedule at the end of October. As a PSHS docent myself, I can say that the tours continue to fascinate me every time. It is exciting to see visitors so enamored with the past of our magical city, making each tour given a bit surprising with different comments or questions asked by them, “You never know what’s going happen,” said Leonard. With the world rushing by in hurried pace, it is more important than ever to preserve our history. For us in the Coachella Valley, the Palm Springs Historical Society is diligently at work to do just that, not only with the museum, but thanks to Kathy Leonard and all the docents, with the Walking Tours as well, allowing us all to take look back in time while strolling down the streets of Palm Springs. he Futurenomic Resources’ program and Mayor Adam Sanchez brought the DHS Got Talent event to the Coachella Valley and it was the most successful talent showcase to hit Desert Hot Springs! Adon Icon invited three judges, R.C. “Cooley” Carrier, Mr. Billy Tuchscher, and Alvin Taylor. The winner will be selected at the FINALE of the ‘DHS Got Talent’ show on July 5, 2014. Selma Grows College of the Desert Club President, Sarahyah Yisrael would “…like to thank all the sponsors for our ground breaking event, Boys & Girls Club, Chambers of Commerce, Casablanca Restaurant for the food, and Pat Verfuerth. It was a total success, WE SOLD OUT!” she says.

The tours take anywhere from 1 ½ to 2 hours depending on the size of the group and cost $15 per person. The days and times vary for the tours. The tours have been a great fundraising source for the non-profit organization since the beginning. The tours have allowed them to make much needed upgrades to their museum which is located in the McCallum Adobe, the oldest standing building in Palm Springs built back in 1884 for pioneer John McCallum. The funds have also enabled them to expand the exhibits and have eliminated the entry fee to the museum for visitors. The Walking Tours have been a great benefit

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Fireworks displays excite the eyes and lift the spirit. But the smoke and dust they produce can harm the lungs with residues of heavy metals. The toxic chemicals they release may pollute streams and lakes and even groundwater. So is there any alternative? Not yet. No one has come up with a more benign variety of fireworks. But if it happens soon, I bet it will be due to the efforts of an enterprising Aries researcher. Your tribe is entering a phase when you will have good ideas about how to make risky fun safer, how to ensure vigorous adventures are healthy, and how to maintain constructive relationships with exciting influences. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Free jazz is a type of music that emerged in the 1950s as a rebellion against jazz conventions. Its meter is fluid and its harmonies unfamiliar, sometimes atonal. Song structures may be experimental and unpredictable. A key element in free jazz is collective improvisation -- riffing done not just by a featured soloist, but by the entire group of musicians playing together. To prepare for your adventures in the coming days, Taurus -- which I suspect will have resemblances to free jazz -- you might want to listen to music by its pioneers, like Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, and Sun Ra. Whatever you do, don’t fall prey to scapabobididdilywiddilydoobapaphobia, which is the fear of freestyle jazz. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Apple and Exxon are the most valuable companies in America. In third place, worth more than $350 billion, is Google. Back in 1999, when the future Internet giant was less than a year old, Google’s founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page tried to sell their baby for a mere million dollars. The potential buyer was Excite, an online service that was thriving at the time. But Excite’s CEO turned down the offer, leaving Brin and Page to soldier onward by themselves. Lucky for them, right? Today they’re rich and powerful. I foresee the possibility of a comparable development in your life, Gemini. An apparent “failure” may, in hindsight, turn out to be the seed of a future success. CANCER (June 21-July 22): “You can’t have your cake and eat it, too” is an English-language proverb. It means that you will no longer have your cake if you eat it all up. The Albanian version of the adage is “You can’t go for a swim without getting wet. “ Hungarians say, “It’s impossible to ride two horses with one butt.” According to my analysis, Cancerian, you will soon disprove this folk wisdom. You will, in effect, be able to eat you cake and still have it. You will somehow stay dry as you take a dip. You will figure out a way to ride two horses with your one butt. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): I know this might come as a shock, Leo, but . . . are you ready? . . . you are God! Or at least godlike. An influx of crazy yet useful magic from the Divine Wow is boosting your personal power way beyond normal levels. There’s so much primal mojo flowing through you that it will be hard if not impossible for you to make mistakes. Don’t fret, though. Your stint as the Wild Sublime Golden Master of Reality probably won’t last for more than two weeks, three tops. I’m sure that won’t be long enough for you to turn into a raving megalomaniac with 10,000 cult followers. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): In your imagination, take a trip many years into the future. See yourself as you are now, sitting next to the wise elder you will be then. The two of you are lounging on a beach and gazing at a lake. It’s twilight. A warm breeze feels good. You turn to your older self and say, “Do you have any regrets? Is there anything you wish you had done but did not do?” Your older self tells you what that thing is. (Hear it now.) And you reply, “Tomorrow I will begin working to change all that.” LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Over a hundred years ago, the cattle industry pressured the U.S. government to kill off wolves in Yellowstone National Park. By 1926 the wolves had all but vanished. In the following decades, elk herds grew unnaturally

big, no longer hunted by their natural predator. The elk decimated the berry bushes of Yellowstone, eating the wild fruit with such voracity that grizzly bears and many other species went hungry. In 1995, environmentalists and conservationists got clearance to re-introduce wolves to the area. Now the berry bushes are flourishing again. Grizzlies are thriving, as are other mammals that had been deprived. I regard this vignette as an allegory for your life in the coming months, Libra. It’s time to do the equivalent of replenishing the wolf population. Correct the imbalance. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): I have no problem with you listening closely to the voices in your head. Although there might be some weird counsel flowing from some of them, it’s also possible that one of those voices might have sparkling insights to offer. As for the voices that are delivering messages from your lower regions, in the vicinity of your reproductive organs: I’m not opposed to you hearing them out, either. But I hope you will be most attentive and receptive to the voices in your heart. While they are not infallible, they are likely to contain a higher percentage of useful truth than those other two sources. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Kangaroo rats live in the desert. They’re at home there, having evolved over millennia to thrive in the arid conditions. So well-adapted are they that they can go a very long time without drinking water. While it’s admirable to have achieved such a high level of accommodation to their environment, I don’t recommend that you do something comparable. In fact, its probably better if you don’t adjust to some of the harsher aspects of your environment. Now might be a good time to acknowledge this fact and start planning an alternate solution. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): “Those who control their passions do so because their passions are weak enough to be controlled,” said writer William Blake. I think you will challenge this theory in the coming weeks, Capricorn. Your passions will definitely not be weak. They may even verge on being volcanic. And yet I bet you will manage them fairy well. By that I mean you will express them with grace and power rather than allowing them to overwhelm you and cause a messy ruckus. You won’t need to tamp them down and bottle them up because you will find a way to be both uninhibited and disciplined as you give them their chance to play. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Would you please go spend some quality time having non-goaloriented fun? Can I convince you to lounge around in fantasyland as you empty your beautiful head of all compulsions to prove yourself and meet people’s expectations? Will you listen to me if I suggest that you take off the mask that’s stuck to your face and make funny faces in the mirror? You need a nice long nap, gorgeous. Two or three nice long naps. Bake some damn cookies, even if you’ve never done so. Soak your feet in epsom salts as you binge-watch a TV show that stimulates a thousand emotions. Lie in the grass and stare lovingly at the sky for as long as it takes to recharge your spiritual batteries. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Dear Pisceans: Your evil twins have asked me to speak to you on their behalf. They say they want to apologize for the misunderstandings that may have arisen from their innocent desire to show you what you had been missing. Their intent was not at all hostile or subversive. They simply wanted to fill in some gaps in your education. OK? Next your evil twins want to humbly request that you no longer refer to them as “Evil Twin,” but instead pick a more affectionate name, like, say “Sweet Mess” or “Tough Lover.” If you promise to treat them with more geniality, they will guarantee not to be so tricky and enigmatic. Homework: Upon waking up for the next seven mornings, sing the song that fills you with feisty hope. Rob Brezsny Free Will Astrology freewillastrology@freewillastrology.com

Mother’s Are Special

M

others around the world will be celebrated on Sunday the 11th day of May. According to Wikipedia, Mother’s Day is a proclamation honoring mothers and celebrating motherhood. The influence of mothers on society is preeminent. In the United States, Mother’s Day commenced approximately 150 years ago. An Appalachian homemaker, Anna Jarvis originally proclaimed, “Mother’s Work Day.” This was a day to raise awareness of poor health conditions within her community. Anna Jarvis passed away in 1905 and this inspired her daughter, also named Anna, to carry on the tradition. Anna instigated a campaign to memorialize the life work of her mother. Traditionally, Mother’s Day was celebrated by attending church, writing, and sending letters to mothers. As years past Anna Jarvis became enraged. She believed this day of sentiment was being marginalized for greed and profit. Anna Jarvis filed a lawsuit to stop a Mother’s Day festival. Subsequently she was arrested for disturbing the peace at a Mother’s Day convention selling carnations for a wartime mother’s group. Prior to her death in 1948, Jarvis admitted she regretted starting the Mother’s Day tradition. The Mother’s Day tradition has flourished in the United States. It has become the most popular day of the year to dine out. Telephone companies record this day as having the highest amount of calls than any other day of

the year. What might you do to make your mother feel special on Mother’s Day? Here are few ideas. Plus, if you are on a budget you may seek alternatives. Cook breakfast or treat your mother to a brunch. Enjoy the day poolside or relax at the spa. Go for a walk and/or hike together. Pull out the photo albums and reminiscence together. Plan to spend more time together and talk. Begin an activity together: walking, hiking, yoga, scrapbooking, etc. Most importantly stimulate a memory on Mother’s Day. Express to your mother how you care and love her. This will signify more than any card. Wishing all of the mother’s and mother’s to-be a very HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY. Write to Bronwyn 200-300 words why your mother (or a influential woman in your life) is special to you and why yoga would be beneficial to her health. Newsflash: Accentuate the Positive

A

s I plunked down my groceries during an early morning food run, the clerk apparently full of caffeine and a dose of the daily news began his tirade. He proceeded to bombard me with a laundry list of negative world happenings as my grocery items were scanned and tallied. I scrutinized his troubled face as I mentally cringed from the blows of his pessimistic newsflash. When the grocer stopped to take a breath I suggested he stop taking in all the negative news. He looked at me as if my brain were as blonde as my hair and crisply informed me that bad news was the only kind available. My answer was to propose he create some good news. Offering up some sincere gratitude for his service and my brightest smile I left him to ponder what I meant. Admittedly my neighborhood grocer wasn’t all wrong when he informed me of the bad news ratio. According to Psychology Today, media studies show bad news far outweighs good news by as much as seventeen negative news reports for every one good news report. Taking in all this negativity, we tend to get fearful. When that happens, our stress hormone, cortisol kicks in. When overextended, we can drown in that hormone causing harm to our bodies. Focus on this fact: cortisol deactivates your

body’s natural self-repair mechanisms and raises your blood sugar. As a society, we need to stop obsessing over negative news and start finding a reason to smile. My morning interlude could have been so much brighter if the clerk shared a positive quote or flashed a winning grin and told me a joke. Humor is contagious. I could have left the store on a high note and paid it forward by telling the joke to my next client. In 1975 Paul Simon had a hit song entitled, “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover.” Certainly there must at least 50 positive ways to positively kick-start your day thus leaving behind the morning habit of filling up on downbeat information. For example you can get up ten minutes early to meditate, pray, read a funny story, write in a gratitude journal, repeat positive affirmations, or listen to an uplifting podcast. Buddha reminds us that “Every morning we are born again.” Remember that tomorrow morning. If you must flip on CNN before your feet hit the floor, train your brain to remain positive. As a physician and a musician in the local band, The Refills, I will sometimes get asked for medical advice by my fellow musicians. With the Coachella Valley Weekly Music Awards coming up on Sunday, May 18th, I would like to take this opportunity to discuss a few medical issues that are common among musicians.

T

ennis Elbow or as I refer to it as “Guitarist’s Elbow” or “Drummer’s Elbow” is inflammation of the lateral epicondyle of the elbow, or the outer or thumb side of the elbow. This condition is caused by overuse or repeated gripping type action of the hand, as in a guitar player gripping the pick too tightly or hand positioning on the neck and frets, a drummer grasping the drum sticks or a musician lifting on the handle of heavy equipment upward with the palm of hand pointed downward. It can even occur in singers who will frequently grip the microphone stand when performing. This condition can progress to a point that even just shaking someone’s hand when you greet them can be extremely painful or even pouring liquid out of a bottle. The condition worsens if the musician continues with the repetitive motion. If you start to notice this type of elbow pain, over the counter anti- inflammatories, such as ibuprofen or naprosyn, can be helpful in controlling the pain and inflammation. Ice to the area can also help. Resting of the affected arm/elbow will allow the area to heal. Modifying one’s grip can also help, but may be difficult since it may affect the playing of the instrument. When lifting using the handles on heavy equipment, lift with the palm of the hand facing upward. If rest or modification of activity doesn’t seem to help, then regular application of moist heat to the area and performing stretching exercises to the elbow can be beneficial. Wearing a tennis elbow velcro band (which can be purchased at any pharmacy or sporting goods store) can also help in rehabilitating the elbow. If the symptoms continue despite regularly performing self exercises, applying moist heat and wearing the forearm band, then your doctor may need to inject cortisone to the area. If you are concerned you might have this

condition, see your doctor to establish the diagnosis and get information on the self exercises to rehab the elbow. Laryngitis is inflammation of the voice box and is characterized by a hoarse voice. This condition commonly occurs in singers, especially if they have been misusing or overusing their voice, such as in shouting or singing too loud. If the stage volume is at a high level, you may be straining your voice just to be heard. Singing causes your vocal cords to vibrate at a faster rate than normal. The excessive vibration can damage the vocal cords, causing them to become inflamed. Voice rest is the mainstay of treatment along with drinking plenty of fluids (water). Inhaling humidified air (such as in a hot steamy shower), taking anti- inflammatories (naprosyn or ibuprofen) can also be helpful.Musicians commonly smoke and drink alcohol, which can affect the vocal cords. Smoking irritates the throat and can cause long term inflammation and even cancer, alcohol also causes laryngitis and can dry out the vocal cords. Smoking and alcohol can also cause acid reflux which can damage the vocal cords. Lifestyle modifications and proper singing technique are the key factors in preventing this condition.
