Accessibility and Sensory-Friendly Performances

2022/2023 was a year of renewal and recovery, featuring a return to a full season of events with Great Performances at Mason and from George Mason University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA). Our foot traffic was up to 137,000—not fully back to pre-pandemic levels but a sizeable jump from the previous year, and the momentum has carried over into this current year. As important as the numbers, was the enthusiasm expressed by our audiences—and not only for performances but for pre- and post-show offerings. In addition to our regular pre-performance discussions before nearly every event, audiences enjoyed post-show discussions with the artists of Nrityagram Dance Ensemble, Virginia Opera, Silkroad Ensemble, Doug Varone and Dancers, Chloé Arnold’s Syncopated Ladies LIVE!, and Indigenous Enterprise. These lively encounters once again proved how engaged our audiences are with the subjects and artistry of the work we present.

This was also a season of collaborations—featuring both the Great Performance at Mason series and CVPA academic units. Highlights include: •

The creation of Come Sunday, where the Center’s production staff collaborated with Professor William Lake (Dewberry School of Music) and Professor Lawrence Jackson (School of Dance) to create a fully produced dance piece to Omar Thomas’s composition for Wind Symphony, Come Sunday. The performance featured the Mason Wind Symphony and dancers from the School of Dance, and will be available to watch on Mason Arts Amplified, our re-invented digital streaming platform.

Doug Varone and Dancers, a Great Performances at Mason presentation, included students from the School of Dance in the finale of the program, a challenging and brilliant work called Double Octet. Many audience members observed that the Mason students blended seamlessly with the seasoned professionals of the Varone company.

The third annual in person GAMEmason was a robust collaboration with Mason’s Office of Student Involvement, CVPA’s Game Design Program and GMU Esports to present a two-day gaming convention which featured a Varsity level Esports tournaments as well as a keynote presentation and workshops with prominent voiceover artist Carolina Ravassa.

As we look ahead, we are focused on reimagining the Center for the Arts Concert Hall as a 21st-century venue that will better serve our audiences, artists, and students. We are a proud part of Mason NOW: Power the Possible, the university’s $1 billion campaign, and have been actively raising funds to make this dream a reality. MASON ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE INSPIRE ACROSS CAMPUS AND BEYOND

Silkroad masterclass with Dewberry School of Music students

Each year, the Center for the Arts invites artists and ensembles to make George Mason University their home for extended residencies, participating in a variety of activities designed to engage and inspire audiences both on and off Mason’s Fairfax Campus.

In the fall, the 2022/2023 Mason Artist-in-Residence program welcomed India’s Nrityagram Dance Ensemble, best known for its one-of-a-kind residential community devoted to the art of classical Odissi dance, and Sri Lanka’s Chitrasena Dance Company, performing Kandyan dance. The groups participated in 10 events over the course of a week, culminating with a shared performance on November 5, 2022. Activities included an Artists in Conversation event co-presented by the City of Fairfax, classroom discussions and demonstrations, and two masterclasses with Mason School of Dance students.

Next, GRAMMY Award-winning Silkroad Ensemble began the first of an expansive three-year residency with Mason. Silkroad’s cultural collaboration seeks to build bridges of understanding and build a more hopeful and inclusive world. Members of the ensemble engaged the community and Mason students, as well as Fairfax Academy Music and Technology high school students, through a variety of events, classes, and discussions in January 2023. Championing women and non-binary ensemble members alongside special guest Tuscarora/Taíno musician Pura Fé, Silkroad's performance at the Center, Uplifted Voices, featured a musical tapestry connecting the sounds and rhythms of Indigenous North America to the World.

The season concluded in April 2023 with a residency with Indigenous Enterprise, comprised of champion dancers from Native American and Canadian tribes and Nations. On a mission to proudly share their heritage and culture through explosively joyous authentic dance and song, the group invited its audience to revel in the pageantry, history, and kaleidoscope of colors in a celebration of what lies at the heart of these powerful traditions.

Community activities included an Artists in Conversation event co-presented by the City of Fairfax, demonstrations, and discussions for those ranging in age from kindergartners to retirees in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at George Mason University.

ARTS BY GEORGE! RETURNS WITH BROADWAY SUPERSTAR KRISTIN CHENOWETH AS HEADLINER

“The full-scale return of ARTS by George! was a joyous experience from top to bottom,” exclaims Rick Davis, Dean of Mason’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA). On September 24, 2022, ARTS by George! returned after a two-year long pandemic-induced hiatus, giving students and faculty from each discipline an opportunity to present behind-the-scenes showcases, film screenings, performances, and interactive experiences.

During the evening’s showcases, students from Mason School of Theater previewed songs from their production of Head Over Heels, Mason School of Dance performed for robust audiences, and Dewberry School of Music presented genres ranging from jazz to opera. Additional showcases included Mason Film and Video Studies screenings, Computer Game Design interactive virtual reality demonstrations, and Mason School of Art printmaking activities.

After the showcases, guests participated in a live auction, welcomed

by Mason President Gregory Washington, who remarked, “Tonight, we celebrate the excellence of Mason’s College of Visual and Performing Arts and the vibrant cultural offerings it provides to our campuses and wider community. The arts are one of the front doors to the university and we’re pleased that so many of you have found your way through our door to become involved with CVPA and Mason.” The auction items and the Fund-A-Student opportunities, which directly contribute to the scholarships available to CVPA students, raised more than $23,000.

Concluding the evening, Emmy and Tony Award winner Kristin Chenoweth performed a concert from her album For The Girls, a tribute to the great female singers throughout history, culminating in a champagne toast on stage with Dean Rick Davis and donors. ARTS by George! was sponsored

by Sandy Spring Bank and co-chaired by Annie Bolger and Steven Golsch.

In total, the annual philanthropic event raised approximately $250,000 for student scholarships in CVPA, as well as for the Mason Community Arts Academy, Green Machine Ensembles, and the Great Performances at Mason season at the Center for the Arts.

THE CENTER INCREASES ACCESSIBILITY AND SENSORY-FRIENDLY OPTIONS

AUDIENCES PARTICIPATE IN ACTIVITIES IN THE CENTER’S LOBBY THROUGHOUT THE SEASON

The Center for the Arts aims to provide an Sensory Kits enjoyable experience to all by making its performances and facilities accessible.

On March 26, 2023, the Center offered a sensory-friendly performance of Enchantment Theater Company’s The Adventures of Harold and the Purple Crayon, designed to create a welcoming and comfortable arts experience for people with autism, sensory sensitivities, or other social, learning, or cognitive disabilities.

Additionally, for the first time as part of the 2022/2023 season, the Center offered sensory kits, including a wide variety of fidget toys such as stress balls, fidget spinners, and pop-its; pillowcases to drape over the seat for a softer seat texture; a pen and notepad to take notes or draw with; and overthe-ear headphones to mute loud noises. The Center has accessible offerings available at every performance including assistive listening devices, large print programs, and complimentary transfer wheelchairs.

For the 2022/2023 season, Center for the Arts staffers worked in committees to plan and carry out lobby activations designed to surprise and delight audience members, creating participatory experiences immediately prior to and following performances. Director of Programming Adrienne Bryant Godwin notes, “We focused on creating an inviting and engaging environment for our patrons, both pre-and post-performances.

You might have seen Mason students performing in the lobby, or hordes of adorable children crafting in the lobby before a Family Series performance.”

Additionally, the Center captions streamed performances, and continues to add more audio-described options, including all Virginia Opera production Sunday matinees. Audience Services Manager Betsy Yancey states, “We have increased access awareness and services with a proactive stance.

While there is always room for improvement, it’s great to see the progress and advances we have made in this area.”

In addition to the discussions that precede every Great Performances at Mason event, many of those performances and all the Family Series events offered ancillary lobby activities. Examples included the audience members’ opportunities to meet talented artists such as the tap dancers of Syncopated Ladies, acrobats of Cirque FLIP Fabrique, and vocalists of Voctave at post-performance meet-and-greets. Patrons of all ages participated in craft activities at The Adventures of Harold and the Purple Crayon and The Queen’s Cartoonists, and attendees streaming out of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band concert were treated to a serenade by Mason’s own Dirty Gold Brass Band, part of the Green Machine pep band ensembles. Godwin notes, “We hope to continue building on these efforts in future seasons.”

OPPORTUNITIES FOR FRIENDS OF THE CENTER

This season saw the return of backstage tours for Friends—an activity that had been postponed previously due to COVID-19—with Cirque FLIP Fabrique in April 2023. The designated Friends area, offering snacks and beverages at each Great Performances at Mason or Family Series event as a perk of membership, also moved from the Center’s main lobby to Grand Tier II, allowing for more space to converse and enjoy fellow Friends company prior to performances.

Each season, the Friends of the Center for the Arts, who donate $100+, receive special invitations to experience a closer look at the season’s performances and artists, including Artists in Conversation events, season preview events, and much more. During the 2022/2023 season, three Artists in Conversation events were co-presented with the City of Fairfax and opened to the general public, with exclusive receptions for Friends with the artists to follow. For Virginia Opera’s February 2023 performance of Fellow Travelers, based on Thomas Mallon’s 2007 novel of the same name, author and PEN/Faulkner Award Finalist Mallon and composer Gregory Spears participated in a community conversation on January 23, 2023 at the Sherwood Community Center, followed by a special reception. Additional Artists in Conversation lecture/demonstration events featured Mason Artistsin-Residence Indigenous Enterprise, as well as Nrityagram Dance Ensemble and Chitrasena Dance Company.
