AMERICAN FESTIVAL POPS ORCHESTRA The American Festival Pops Orchestra (AFPO), under the baton of Artistic Director and Conductor Anthony Maiello, offers year-round performances dedicated to the finest in popular music. Through lively programming and repertoire, this dynamic ensemble treats audiences to a festive Pops experience that pays tribute to the celebrated musical genre that is a cherished part of American pop culture.

A gathering of extraordinary musical talent, the American Festival Pops Orchestra makes its home at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts in Fairfax and the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, Virginia.

Comprising more than 60 professional musicians from and around the D.C. metro area, AFPO includes members of George Mason University’s music faculty, United States military ensembles, and regional symphonies. The orchestra is also proud to include a select group of talented young musicians from George Mason University’s Dewberry School of Music.

AFPO is committed to its mission to present the best of a treasured musical genre employing some of the country’s most distinguished performing artists. Whether performing Broadway hits, legendary film scores, or light classics, AFPO will strike a nostalgic chord with fans young and old.

AFPO ARTISTS ANTHONY J. MAIELLO (Conductor and Artistic Director) makes professional appearances both nationally and abroad conducting music festivals, adjudicating ensembles, and presenting clinics, lectures, and workshops throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, and Europe. He conducted musical activities for the Gold Medal Ceremonies at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York; served as Musical Director for Music Festivals International; was selected as President of International Association of Jazz Educators, New York State Chapter; and is a guest clinician for Yamaha Corporation and Warner Bros. Publications.

In 2010, he was inducted into the Bands of America Hall of Fame at Music for All’s Indianapolis headquarters.

Professional recording credits include conducting the American Wind Symphony and additional studio ensembles for Alfred/Belwin Publications. Locally, Maiello has served as Associate Conductor of The McLean Orchestra, McLean, Virginia; been appointed an Honorary Conductor of The United States Navy Band, Washington, D.C.; and was a participant in the National Conducting Institute with Leonard Slatkin and the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., to which he has provided his services as a cover conductor.

Maiello received his Bachelor and Master degrees in Music Education from Ithaca College, Ithaca, New York, in 1965 and 1967 respectively, and has extensive experience teaching in the public schools and at the university level. While at the Crane School of Music, Potsdam College of SUNY, Potsdam, New York, he served as a Professor of Music and Chairman of Performance, teaching Advanced Instrumental Conducting, Applied Clarinet, Woodwind Techniques, Percussion Techniques, and conducted the Crane Wind Ensemble.

Presently a Professor of Music with George Mason University’s Dewberry School of Music, Maiello teaches Graduate Conducting and all levels of Aural Skills. He has served as Associate Director of the School of Music and founded and conducted the Mason Wind Ensemble and Mason Chamber Orchestra.

Additionally, he has served as Conductor of the Mason Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Band and Director of the Jazz Ensemble. Under his direction, the ensembles at both Crane and George Mason commissioned new works, made numerous recordings, and appeared at national and international conferences.

Throughout his career, Maiello has published musical compositions for string orchestra and is the author of Conducting Nuances (GIA Publications, Inc.) and Conducting: A Hands-On-Approach (Warner Bros./Alfred Publications) and coauthor of The 21st Century Band Method (Warner Bros./Alfred Publications). In 2007, Maiello was awarded the title of University Professor by the George Mason University Board of Visitors, the highest rank given to Mason faculty members.

In 2012, he was presented with the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Signature Award for promoting music in America, and in 2013, was nominated for a GRAMMY Music Educator Award, a category created by The Recording Academy in partnership with the GRAMMY Foundation in recognition of music educators. In 2015, Maiello received the Bandmaster of the Year Award from Tau Beta Sigma International Band Fraternity at the International Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. In spring 2019, Maiello was invited to serve as Honorary Chairperson for the 2019 Fairfax Spotlight on the Arts festival. This coming July, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia will present him with the Charles E. Lutton Man of Music Award at their national conference in St. Louis, Missouri.

Maestro Maiello is the Founder and Conductor/Artistic Director of the American Festival Pops Orchestra, a professional ensemble in the greater D.C. metropolitan area dedicated to promoting and performing the finest in American popular music.

BRYAN KIDD (Composer/Arranger-in-Residence) While primarily known as a big band arranger, Bryan Kidd’s 26 years with the United States Navy Band, Washington, D.C., was an all-encompassing experience of arranging and composing in a wide variety of styles for the band’s various ensembles: the Concert and Ceremonial Bands, Commodores (jazz ensemble), Sea Chanters (chorus), Fair Winds (jazz vocal quartet), Country Current (county-western and bluegrass), and Cruisers (rock band).

Mr. Kidd’s composing, arranging, conducting, and teaching, all of which range from the elementary through collegiate and professional levels, began in 1971 as a band director teaching grades 7 through 12 at Hayfield Secondary School in Fairfax County, Virginia.

In 1976, he joined the Navy Band as a Staff Arranger, retiring as Chief Composer and Arranger in 2002. Navy Band performances of his music through concerts, recordings, television, and internet appearances have spanned the globe from the White House to Carnegie Hall to St. Petersburg, Russia.

In addition to AFPO, Mr. Kidd’s music was featured by the Mason Jazz Vocal Ensemble at the 2018 Jazz Educators Network (JEN) Conference and by several all-state honor bands and orchestras (most recently, Virginia and Central Oklahoma). He also had an original composition commissioned by the Virginia Music Educators Association for the 2017-2018 All-Virginia Jazz Ensemble.

A graduate of Shenandoah University, Mr. Kidd holds degrees in music education (B.M.E. 1971) and composition (M.M. 2010). Consistently endorsed as an “Editor’s Choice” by J.W. Pepper & Co., Mr. Kidd’s compositions and arrangements are published by FJH Music Co., Curnow Music Press, and Alfred Publications. Mr. Kidd serves on the board of directors of the Zeiders American Dream Theatre in Virginia Beach and the Chesapeake and Ohio Historical Society in Clifton Forge, Virginia.

GUEST ARTISTS LISA VROMAN (American Lyric Soprano and Stage Actress) From Broadway to classics, on stage and in concert, Lisa Vroman has established herself as one of America’s most versatile voices. She starred on Broadway and in Los Angeles and San Francisco as Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera and garnered theater critics’ awards for her portrayal. Her Broadway debut was in Aspects of Love and she was the first to play both Fantine and Cosette in Les Misérables.

Lisa has starred in major productions as Marian Paroo in The Music Man, Lili Vanessi in Kiss Me Kate, Birdie in Regina, Josephine in H.M.S. Pinafore, Anna 1 in The Seven Deadly Sins, Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus, Laurey in Oklahoma, Anna Leonowens in The King and I, Mary Turner in Of Thee I Sing, and Rosabella in The Most Happy Fella. She appeared on PBS as Johanna in the Emmy Award-winning production of Sweeney Todd and was featured in the London Royal Gala, Hey! Mr.

Producer. She played, sang, and danced as Mary Poppins opposite Dick Van Dyke at the Hollywood Bowl’s Walt Disney: 75 Years of Music, and played the role of Maria Callas in Terence McNally’s award-winning play Master Class.

Lisa is a frequent guest with symphonies and orchestras based in San Francisco, Nashville, Philadelphia, Dallas, Utah, St. Louis (Missouri), Houston, Pacific (Orange Co., California), Atlanta, Hong Kong, Cleveland, National (Washington, D.C.), and Florida, and with the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Boston Pops, Philly Pops, and the New York Pops. She is a graduate of the Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam (B.M., Hon. Dr. of Music, Minerva Award), and Carnegie-Mellon University (M.F.A.), and is a George London Competition winner. She has become an active mentor and sought-after clinician with many colleges and universities across the country and around the world. She has acted as a judge in both the Lotte Lenya Competition for the Kurt Weill Foundation and UCLA’s Walter Jurmann Competition, and regularly performs Weill’s music with symphonies throughout the country.

Recent performances have included concerts with the famed Gewandhaus Orchester in Leipzig and appearing with The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus celebrating their 40th anniversary season in the premiere of Unbreakable by composer Andrew Lippa. lisavroman.com DAVE DETWILER (Trumpet) continues to be one of the most highly sought-after “first call” lead trumpet players and music educators on the East Coast, his career spanning over 32 years.

As a music educator, Dave has managed a thriving trumpet studio for over 40 years.

Many of Dave’s students have earned trumpet scholarships at major universities and conservatories–some have even pursued professional careers in music. He has received several Virginia State Teachers awards while instructing at the high school and college levels, and an Outstanding Teacher award while serving as Director of Jazz at Georgetown University, a position he held for 14 years.

In 1973, Dave joined The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in Washington, D.C., where his career flourished for more than 26 years. As a lead player and jazz soloist with The Army Blues, Dave recorded and traveled throughout the U.S and abroad. In addition to performing at the White House and other official concerts in and around Washington, D.C., Dave was also the featured trumpet soloist for numerous U.S. Army Concert Band performances, including tours of Europe, Japan, and Australia.

Dave appears regularly with the National Symphony Orchestra, has performed with the New York Philharmonic, and can be seen performing in shows at The Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap, the National Theatre, Nissan Pavilion [now Jiffy Lube Live], and on annually televised performances “Christmas in Washington,” the Kennedy Center Honors Awards, the National Memorial Day Concert, and “A Capitol Fourth.”

MARTY NAU (Clarinet) is a 41-year veteran of the music business in Washington, D.C., and spent 20 years with the Navy Band Commodores Jazz Ensemble, from which he retired in 1997. He is a highly active and sought-after jazz alto saxophone player in the D.C. area. Starting on the clarinet when he was in the sixth grade, Marty soon gravitated towards the saxophone in the ninth grade, playing in both the junior high and senior high school jazz bands. Upon graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Navy Music Program. After coming to Washington, D.C., in 1980, he played with such big bands as the Blues Alley Big Band, Bill Potts Big Band, Guy Lombardo, and others. He has performed with the National Symphony and Richmond Symphony and has backed up performers including Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie Daniels, Stanley Turrentine, Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Ethel Ennis, Nancy Wilson, Maureen McGovern, and Snooky Young, among others. He can be heard on the Navy Commodores CD recording Here and Now, and has five CDs out under his own name, including one with a great Phil Woods number, “At the Bouquet Chorale.” Marty currently teaches at Music and Arts and Washington Conservatory, as well as from his home studio. He is a member of the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra, based at George Mason University, and he stays busy performing with the Baltimore Symphony.

SGT. ANDREW MISSLER (Guest Conductor) began his career with the Fairfax County Police Department in 1998 and was assigned to the McLean District Station, where he worked as a patrol officer in the Neighborhood Patrol Unit (N.P.U.). After serving for many years on the N.P.U. team, he transitioned back to patrol and began studying for the Sergeant process. He was then promoted to a Master Police Officer and shortly thereafter promoted to Sergeant. Sgt. Missler was next assigned to the Fair Oaks District Station #8 where his promotion to Sergeant allowed him to work with what he refers to as the “greatest squad within the FCPD.” After 24 years of dedicated service, Sgt. Missler has decided it’s time to pursue new opportunities, and will retire this summer, sharing “It has been an honor and privilege to serve with these exceptional men and women, and to serve this fine community.”

PETER WILSON (Concertmaster and Guest Conductor) is an engaging and multifaceted violinist, conductor, arranger, and composer whose artistry has been noted as “first-class” by The Washington Post. He serves as Music Director of the Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra and The American Prize-winning Waynesboro (Virginia) Symphony Orchestra, as well as Concertmaster of the American Festival Pops Orchestra. Peter is the former senior enlisted music advisor to The White House, where he performed as a Marine violinist for three decades in direct support of five U.S. Presidents. He served as String Section Commander for “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band and, upon retiring, was awarded the Legion of Merit. He has conducted the National Symphony and National Gallery of Art Orchestras and holds music degrees from Northwestern University and The Catholic University of America, where he earned a Doctor of Musical Arts.

Peter began his career as Concertmaster of the Walt Disney World Orchestra and has soloed in unique venues such as the American Embassy in Paris, the Presidential Retreat at Camp David, the Vatican before Pope John Paul II, and Carnegie Hall. He has appeared as violin soloist with such legendary artists as Rosemary Clooney, Renée Fleming, Bernadette Peters, Randy Travis, and Trisha Yearwood. He performed “Theme” from Schindler’s List at The Kennedy Center under the baton of Academy Award-winning film composer John Williams, who wrote of the occasion, “Peter Wilson’s poignant, tender and highly personal reading of the music made clear to all that we were in the presence of a brilliant musical artist.” The Washington Post additionally praised his “impassioned violin solo.” He performed at the Library of Congress with Gershwin Prize recipient Stevie Wonder in the world premiere of Wonder’s Sketches of a Life. A true ambassador of music, Peter is frequently invited to perform his moving violin solo arrangement of The Star-Spangled Banner for high-profile events, including Major League Baseball and NCAA Men’s Basketball games. In addition, Peter is cofounder of the acclaimed string duo Bridging the Gap (with bassist Aaron Clay), which was hailed by The Washington Post for “superior arrangements and uncommon musicianship.”

A Cleveland native, Peter began studying violin at age two, later moving to Morgantown, West Virginia, where he became the first musician ever to receive the Governor’s Award for Exceptional Achievement in the Arts. He studied conducting with Victor Yampolsky, trained with Marin Alsop and Gustav Meier, and worked with Leonard Slatkin at the National Conducting Institute, an intensive leadership training program for rising music directors.

ClevelandClassical.com reviewed a live concert recording at the National Gallery of Art, stating it was “…beautifully performed by the National Gallery Chamber Players under the direction of conductor Peter Wilson.” Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia national music fraternity honored Peter with the prestigious “Signature Sinfonian” award for his “outstanding commitment and dedication to the performing arts while serving as a successful role model.” The Strad magazine encapsulated his performances best by stating, “[Wilson] made music that had the stamp of quality.” For further information, visit PeterWilsonMusician.com.
